Start small, don’t try to teach him 180 degree turns.

Maybe this would actually solve another point as tolunart mentions. As Anet confessed they felt that exotics where too abundant and acquired too fast. If that is truly the case. Don’t forget that we already have a certain average at the mystic forge, it’s just not an individual one and therefore I’m sure less people actually do this.

Again, I’d rather they send me on an adventure anyways, I’m not really an excel spreadsheet warrior.

While I like the token idea, I somehow think that there is no extra currency needed. Just make the equivalent of an increased chance working in the background. As soon as you get a precursor it goes back to zero.

While I appreciate this sentiment, I genuinely dislike things that work magically in the background. A newer player would have no idea what’s going on with this sort of system, meanwhile the token system (with a merchant who had the precursors) would be much more explicit and explorable.

There could still be some other indicator. If we look at the state of the game right now, there is no indication at all, correct? As in nothing tells me about “legendary weapons”.

I guess the point would be to leave a little bit of the “gambling” feel for those who like it. Counting tokens up to 1000 could end up not being very epic either. Plus once you end up with a precursor beforehand – could you feel disappointed because it’s not the right one and now they are not much worth anymore? Dang, 698 tokens to go.

The glow of the mystic forge could maybe change for you. Zommoros or one of his elves could leave comments. “we are not pleased with these puny swords!” “Zommoros is starting to like your offereings, pathetic mortal”

This is only if we restrict ourself to this concept, I’ve said long time ago I’d rather have some sort of adventure or voyage attached to the entire endeavour, little bit of story sprinkled into it.

Optional this could also increase after each precursor drop. Doesn’t have to be much, but over time it might offset the additional account bonuses and help newer players.

Here is sort of the ideal I would like to see – and I’m not sure how translatable it is. Remember how they said they don’t want to tell us, but instead show us? The example was the centaurs attacking.

So, while I would indeed like to be a part of a group that knows what it’s doing, and I would love my NPC companions to be competent, meaning let them kill the mobs left and right (there could always be more spawns) – but down the center lane, there is big daddy. He’s mine. He already killed 20 of my men.

Haha, that would be awesome. But with power over 9000 way too over. Like over over. Like no one would be playing charr anymore. Only Logans with capes and mini elite fighters.

Honestly, at that point charr would need like a transformer tail usable in combat.

I am not confused. Splitting skills like that is a bandage – they did so many in GW1, it was ridiculous. I think ‘BALANCE’ is the most important part – between all the aspects of the game. The people who want just a PvE ONLY balance don’t get or want to get that it is the same using a sledgehammer to hammer a nail. Unintended consequences will happen and then they will whine some more.

Then you are ignoring what the game design lead himself said. Explicitly. And they are already using the sledgehammer to use your terminology.

The unintended consequences will always happen, no matter which way they go. It’s the name of the game, at least they are relatively fast with getting the bugs out.

I’m sure you have nothing to worry about short term though lol.

I’ve never played those two games before. Was in-game currency that useless? If so, what’s the point in playing if there’s no money system?

Not sure about EverQuest, but I would say raids. In-game currency was not useless per se but I’d almost daresay you made it faster with daily quests and the like than with selling things at the auction house. But take that with a grain of salt.

‘Working hard’ is only a solution as long as not a lot of people are doing it, so telling people to go and do it wouldn’t help at all if too many took up that advice. The ‘path’ isn’t to work hard, it’s to work harder than the people you’re competing with for a resource, and that obviously can’t turn out succesfully for everyone.

You’re in luck, I guarantee that most of the people reading this won’t take my advice.

However, that doesn’t change anything. The devs set up the Legendary process the way they did for a reason, and whining about it on the forums won’t change that.

How exactly do you explain that they were even talking about precursor crafting – as in the devs – if it is what it is and that’s it and we should all just be quiet and accept the facts?

Remember, having fun is not the shortcut, it’s the path.
(Ok, that really wasn’t as good as yours.)

But I do hope that they still leave the mystic toilet part in the game as well, so people can still do it the hard earned way (not that we know if the “crafting” way will actually be “easier”) if that is what they prefer.

Btw, they sure designed this game with the maxime on mind to “compete” with everyone. Which is why we have mob and tagging, fights over resource nodes etc.

Dusty, now you contradict yourself. Or maybe it’s because of the wording.

Let’s try it this way, in the past skills have been split or not to accommodate the PvP/WvW aspect of the game.

Now split skills to accommodate the idea of making weapon types more viable overall in PvE.

I think you are too fixated on the “balance” part. There is a split already and Anet has said that it’s intentional and because they value ALL PARTS of the game they will split skills even more.

The OP is just asking to see examples of them doing it with PvE in mind.

Splitting a few skills is different that actually changing the basic mechanics of the game and having a PvE-centric balance update. It will only cause issues in WvW (which is a hybrid PvE/PvP) and in PvP also.

I am mostly a PvE player, although I have recently been very happy playing WvW. I feel what is being asked will only kitten the game even more.

I personally am not asking to “kitten” other parts of the game in favour of PvE, even though the OP has brought up an example how skills got “kittened” in PvE because of those other parts.

I’ll try to stay optimistic, who knows, it might one day be one of those things that they forget to mention in the patch notes.

Anyways, they have acknowledged that the unified idea they had at the beginning doesn’t really work out, here’s to hoping that each patch will make the game more fun for all of us.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/It-s-time-to-balance-PvP-apart-from-PvE-WvW/page/2#post1801535

So you guys know, we already split some skills. And, what’s most pertinent to the current thread, we plan to do this even more.

When we first shipped, it was awesome to have a lot of the balance be the same between PvE/WvW/PvP. But, as you guys have really started to push the game types to their limits, classes and specs that work in one areas of the game are sometimes ineffectual in others.

Due to this, we’ll have to do more splitting of skills to better balance the various areas of the game.

TL:DR – We already do this, and we’ll be using it even more in order to balance the different areas of the game effectively.

It also looks like as if Anet does not want to have “a couple thousand skills” anymore?

I can live with that, which already sound a lot different than “if they (TP Barons) don’t see a problem, there isn’t one”.

Coming from another angle, would you agree that there are cases where “experts” are looking at problem purely from their point of expertise, ignoring the potential that the actual problem might not lie not within their field?

I’m not a TP baron, and I dont see a problem. And no matter what, if there’s a problem that exists, I would sooner trust those who know more about the subject matter to be able to see it than some random person off the street. Even an archaeologist can tell if an engine’s running wrong without being a mechanic as well.

I could now say: “I’m not a TP baron and I see a problem.”
A mechanic might not be able to tell if whatever fossil he picked up belonged there.

Just keep an open mind. It’s hard sometimes to read the same threads over and over again. I think it’s even harder on a forum with a really wonky search function.

The hardest for me is to read things from account names where I think “they are better than this”.

Just because others write nonsense like “the boogeyman has a hidden agenda”, that doesn’t mean one should answer in kind. I know my humour is off sometimes so I’m probably guilty of that as well.

I’m open minded enough to admit when there’s a problem. However, the complainers currently have not proved any problems exist, beyond their own personal preferences are not being met. John has challenged each and every one of them to come forward with a compelling argument against the system. Since then, we’ve had none.

I do think that this is where the crux lies. John has also repeatedly said that sometimes the rules have to be bent to make it exiting, to make it fun. So the economy really has to serve two functions

a) run well and efficient (this is the technical aspect)
b) “be fun” to cut his short

Now I am pretty sure that b) is a technical aspect and science on it’s own, but other than John dropping a hint here and there of being able to, over the masses, sort of measure this – really this is what we are talking about – the personal preference of fun.

Only in order to discuss b) you also have to look at a).

Sometimes it reminds me of the sort of answer you typically get to new suggestions: They can’t do that because this software can’t handle that code. That would stress the system too much. They don’t have enough manpower to design this.

There also has to be room to let other ideas in, discuss them and not worry too much about if it’s feasible.

Argh, I think I’ve gone off topic enough.

To be intelligent or proficient at something is one thing, to be objective or as objective as a human being can be, is another.

Let’s just agree that each party (pro-/anti-TP) has it’s own bias.

Actually, if you word your question like the following, you’ll have your answer:

Who would you ask if there is a problem with a certain system, the person who doesn’t understand the system, or the person who does?

No, you are missing the point – in this context it very simply is who can you trust?

Let’s say you would buy a used car – you bring your own specialist. Same with a house, you don’t trust your realtor.

So no, I don’t accept your argument TP Barons versus “innocent children/normal people” in regards to posts on the forum.

Getting to gold, or if you will learning and coordinating the event will, or so I would think, automatically lead to bronze, silver to gold in most cases.

Now here I think it might be more fun to add achievements – like not getting hit from the stampede or leaving the healing turret alone (preferrably a mix of solo and group efforts).

Would there not be a higher replay value? Of course I would not have both since some people would try to get those achievements and – considering it might not be most “efficient” – that could collide with getting gold.

Just like the “Complete Boss Blitz 10 times” achi, there are “Participate X times” achis for events in Bazaar and Bazaar arena and race activites. They really do auto-complete just by playing without having to be good at theses events. But since they require next to no coordination and rewards rarely differ much, winning (=doing it properly) doesn’t really matter there, unlike in Blitz.

No I understand that, but that is different because we are now looking at an additional condition.

Condition 1: Complete the Event
Condition 2: Complete the Event and achieve Rank X

I don’t think it would have been totally necessary but most likely would have been auto completed after a few times anyways.

The only thing I would “consider” removing (concerning this topic) would be the armour and strenght booster from the store. Just because they take up spots in my inventory. I should just start using all that stuff, I always wait for that moment that never comes.

This armor is AWESOME. The fact that you can wear it for free without transmutation stones, combined with the fact that it gets unlocked for your ENTIRE account. This just makes this the best armor set in-game. At least for me. Totally worth 700 gems.

I love that too, but I’m having a hard time finding the right GS to go with. I’m a Sylvari Guardian, cosmestics is the biggest problem I have, I’m thinking in doing either a Charr Guardian or Asura because of this :/

Maybe Cerimonial, or the new WvW Weapons

Jade Greatsword. It is like 50 to 70 g but that GS is aesthetics are canthan based and so is the outfit.

I thought of that one too, but I don’t have that much gold and also I think it’s too big of a GS, I don’t like them so big, at least of my Sylvari. I really should done an Asura.

My taste would be

Khrysaor, the Golden Sword (~4G)
Naga/Ceremonial as you mentioned
Priory might work depending on your colour scheme, but no idea how big on sylvari
Skybringer perhaps

Difference is they are part of a series, the weapon skins are not. There is nothing wrong with different modes of acquisition, I totally agree there.

I don’t think that John made a mistake of having too many of the other recipes on the market. I would believe that he is pretty aware of the fact that it’s easier to open the faucet slowly than to close it.

Anyways, this is not a right vs wrong.

Edit: I guess we have our answer, drop rate is “increased”. See todays patch notes.

To me this backpiece is part of a series. It even follows the same ingredient requirements for crafting. As such all of the recipes should follow the same distribution pattern.

Now I personally find this piece rather ugly, but I can see that someone might want to collect the profession pieces.

The discrepancy is simply too high vs grenth and dwayna.

I think you would want to be careful not to create too many “niche” consumables. In a sense that the offsets might punish certain playstyles more than others.

I’m sure some people would like to play around with that and create new “metas” for their profession.

I light of the OP I would think that this would be a lot harder to balance though (granting random boons etc).

(…)
Skill is a major factor, I 100% agree.

Let’s delve deeper. If there was a 1v1 between two players, same class, same build, equal experience; but one uses F&N. We both agree that the F&N user would win, correct? So does double clicking an item makes that player better? I don’t feel that is very skillful.

So there are these two titans, both equally skilled, fighting for two hours already, no one can win. Well, one get’s tired because he did not have that energy drink that gives you wings – the other one wins.

I know it wasn’t directed at me, still all the same.

But -
-Is it really adding to your overall experience?

Yes

-Does it make things too easy?

No

-Do I always use it? Why?

No

-Do I usually win 1v1 fights against those who don’t use it?

I don’t 1v1

-Do I craft my own for fun? Or just buy it off the TP?

I have lots from this and that, but if then craft myself.

-Do I offer it to other people when I see them without it? Why?

No, I don’t really check, but if the topic comes up I offer if anyone wants.

Even though I hardly use consumables I would rather not get rid of them. It doesn’t happen often because I mainly forget about them, but sometimes after I was shamefully defeated for whatever reason, I like to bite in a cookie and try it again.

So in a sense you might be able to lower the difficulty, but it comes at a price for a limited time.

They are a sort of restricted boons that last longer.
