Magister Tassi Gone?

Please put Tassi and the quest back in for a couple of days. We didn’t realize it was going to go away exactly on November 1. And due to work I did not finish the upgrade (I leveled my character over 20 levels asap to actually finish this and finally didn’t make it:() . I see several people have the same problem. You could give us an overtime like you did with the item drops and the achievement…Please?

Actually, I wasn’t surprised that Magister Tassi was gone on November 1.
What surprised me was that it wasn’t at noon Pacific, or at midnight GMT, or midnight Pacific.
When I came home from work (around 3:30 Pacific), I assumed she would be gone when the daily achievements reset. However, I took my daughter to a Halloween festival rather than finish the quest, and when I came home at about 6:45 Pacific time, the Halloween stuff was still there. “Sweet!” I thought, though I didn’t catch the pun until later. “I guess they’ll be doing the new build around midnight Pacific, then.” And then I completed the quest with the final two pages.
Well, I say “completed,” but I was grabbing the last page in Sparkfly Fen (I had just turned level 40) when the new build crushed my dreams of getting the blazing red book to match my sylvari’s blazing red hair.

I managed to get the last page, but if I’d known it would be ending when it did, I would have either given up entirely, or I would have waited half an hour to install my new CPU cooler that arrived today. Thinking I had several hours left (because they would never push a new build at 7pm Pacific, right?), I made a foolish mistake. Now I just want to know what they’re planning for people with six pages in their inventories.

I have excuses for why it took me so long to get the last few pages on my level-39 character, but the point is, a portion of the player base would really appreciate a way to turn in the quest items. We’re not asking for the ghosts to keep appearing or anything, just another NPC hanging around by the current event-related NPC. Could even be the same guy with an “I’ll see that these get to the right people” dialogue option.

Otherwise, I’ll have to either occupy 6 bag slots for a year and hope they’re still good for next Halloween, or trash them and give up on what turned out to be a fair bit of work for a low- to mid-level character.

Yeah, I’m glad to see I wasn’t the only one to grab the last book as the timer was counting down. I thought I was safe until I tried to map to Lion’s Arch and the client restarted.

I totally agree, Tassi should stick around. She could criticize the Mad King Thorn actor…

Yes, that’s what I am referring to. I am wondering however if anyone has new information regarding either the creation of such a thing by Anet or the release of an API that will allow developers(possibly me) to start working on this.

Now that the initial wave of bugs and server issues has mostly subsided, I would expect to see something about this in the near future. After Halloween, of course, but probably before Wintersday. I’m thinking around the same time they unlock the GW1 names, since they seem to be waiting for support to catch up before they do either.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve been doing too, but it still costs like 15 silver per candy corn stack since the stuff inside the bags is only worth about half what you spent on it.

I really don’t understand the tonic system… why are they account bound? Most people hate them and so they just throw them out, but the few people who actually really want them have to spend legendary amounts of gold to get them. It’s a lose-lose for everyone involved.

No Opening Cinematic?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

there is no way to re-play your opening cinematic

I’d like to encourage you to consider providing a “replay cinematic” option through the (say) hero panel. By this I mean any cinematic a character has “unlocked”, including the faction choice, dungeon story mode cinematics, and whatever else.

I know that there are more important issues at the moment, but the cinematic’s art style is so well done and GW2 lore is so much fun to watch, so please don’t hide them.

~MRA

I strongly agree with this suggestion. I find myself constantly taking screenshots (I believe I had nearly a thousand when I checked last) because I think it’s so epic. While others may question the merits of the cinematic style used in Guild Wars 2, I often find the situations so cool, the dialogue so entertaining, and the world in general so engrossing that I want to be able to see it again. Unfortunately, while this ability was present in later installments of the original Guild Wars (Eye of the North and—I think— Nightfall), it didn’t seem to make it into Guild Wars 2. It would be awesome to be able to watch again, for example, the celebration cinematic following my triumph at an epic battle with a major-league villain.

I think the Hero panel would be the perfect place for it. I would place one or more buttons, depending on the story step, alongside the text describing each encounter. I would put it in approximately the same place as the “souvenirs” we nominally receive from certain story quests (I won’t comment further on those “items” here).

Haloween Event Achievement

Here’s my jaded assumption: WAI. This is working as intended, and you have received the appropriate rewards.

I’ve opened around a dozen Haunted Doors and have yet to see them do anything. The door opens, I wave…. that’s it. With no information available to explain their purpose or intended function, I can only take them at face value.

Basically, there is no reward. The progress bar in achievements is the ‘trick’, and the ‘treats’ are…… well I haven’t seen any yet.

I’ve had this happen, too. However, upon further investigation, I almost always find either a trick-or-treat bag on the ground somewhere (I think it got tossed into the water once and disappeared) or a Halloween monster (or monsters) to fight. My wife and I have even taken turns knocking at a door and seeing what appeared, and we each did it about three times before the time ran out and it disappeared. We received something (either a trick or treat) each time.

Which maps have Hallowe'en events?

Then what about the ShiverPeaks? DR? It has >people< living in there. Why doesn’t a very large castle have Halloween decorations?

What, are Lion’s Arch, Queensdale, Kessex Hills, Gendarran Fields, and World vs. World (Borderlands for sure, didn’t check Eternal Battlegrounds) not enough decoration for you? Do you realize that people actually have to put in the time and effort to make this happen for you? I think it’s unrealistic to make them redesign the whole game.

Divinity’s Reach is a relatively new area, anyway. Shaemoor itself was kind of a hamlet even in GW1 times, and the Mad King lived and died long before that. Lion’s Arch and the surrounding areas were his stomping grounds, so that’s where his influence is strongest. As for WvW, it takes place in the Mists, so that one’s kind of expected.

Stop Using Cutscenes for NPC Combat Deaths!

in Personal Story

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

I was surprised by just how many NPCs died over the course of the story.

I played my storyline near-parallel to my wife’s storyline, and after seeing Forgal, Apatia, Tonn, Zott, and Kekt meet untimely deaths, I’m afraid to get attached to any NPCs. I’m avoiding my Priory character because I don’t want Sieran to die (and I know, based on the deaths of almost every other likeable NPC, that it is inevitable). Honestly, I’m almost afraid to play my norn and asura characters, based on the list above.

But I can sort of understand why it was done, from a storytelling perspective. I mean, we’re supposed to understand that fighting dragons is serious business, right? And how else to convey the sense of destruction but by making the character feel the loss of so many friends?

"Please consider changing your password" ???

LOL, ok, I got the same message and go right ahead and change it. My last password that I used before for GW2 was: “76O8z#T5$!nnaR3LnQ0e”, dunno why they told me to change it (thought it was pretty solid). But now I have new one also randomly generated and just to be more sure I added the mobile authenticator. =)

I’m an engineer in Aeronautics and they always taught us SAFETY FIRST !

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t about your password as much as it was about when you changed it last. From what I gather from this thread, the message was for people who hadn’t changed their passwords since the blacklist was put into effect, so they don’t know for sure whether your password is on it or not. They’re just playing it safe and suggesting the change anyway, since changing it to something more secure isn’t a bad idea regardless of its current level of security.

Actually, I believe you are mistaken about what prompted this request.

The actual verbiage that is displayed at the top, and the “Must be at least 8 character long” it below. Perhaps you missed the first message, but it reads:

Change Password

That password is not available. Either you’ve used it before, someone else has used it before, or it’s known to have been hacked from another game or web site. Please choose a new, unique password for your Guild Wars account.

It then goes in to suggest the use of four random, unrelated words.

I think this is what you’re running into, and not a glitch with a password that is or exceeds 8 characters, when that is exactly what is requested.

That’s exactly what I did several weeks ago, before the password blacklist came into effect (as far as I know). Four random, unrelated words. And then I added a number or two, just to be on the safe side. But after the patch on Monday, I started getting the message in the attached screenshot.

If this message is due to the password blacklisting system, does that mean my password can be flagged when another user randomly chooses the same (formerly secure) password? With millions of accounts (and more created every day), is this considered a practical means of password security? And is a password insecure simply because another user tries it on a different account? I’m very confused.

I did some digging and found out my hunch was correct – my system is secure, it just wants me to choose a longer password for the sake of being a longer password. To me, this is coming off like the FOV excuses (not legitimage). I guess 8 characters with numbers too is not good enough? It’s not a common word or something either. Guess I’ll change it but not happy at all, why change passwords for no good reason? This was one of the easiest ones I had.

What “digging” did you do? I don’t think it’s anything about password length; I started getting the message after the latest “maintenance” patch (Monday, I think?), but my password is unique, >16 characters, and is complex enough to take several quadrillion years to crack by brute force.

Likewise, I’ll have to paraphrase, though it wasn’t a personal story thing…

Somewhere in Shaemoor, just outside a house, two newlyweds were discussing the weather…
Man: “So, what do you want to do? Have a picnic? Go for a walk?”
Woman: “I’m so glad I’m married!”
Man: “It’s been three days. You’re not tired of me yet?”
Woman: “Tired of you? Never!”
Man: “In that case, forget the picnic. Let’s go back inside!”

At this point, the woman did the /cheer emote and ran back up the steps into the house, and the man chased her excitedly.

I had this happen once or twice as a guardian. The problem wasn’t so much that one rock would take me down; it was that there were two rocks coming almost simultaneously, and each of them took out more than half of my health.

I became aware of the difference after I took out one of the rock-chucking giants and the other one could almost take me down, but not quite.

Of course, in some cases, only one rock was necessary to take me out entirely. I assume those were critical hits, perhaps.

New camera makes me feel sick

RoyHarmon.5398

The old camera made me feel sick sometimes.

The worst was when I was positioned such that there was some object very near my character and almost in direct line of sight. The camera couldn’t make up its mind whether to zoom in or not, and it would zoom halfway in and back out rapidly (about 3-4 times per second) until I swiveled the camera slightly. I don’t know yet if this is fixed.

I still don’t like seeing nothing but my half-cutaway character and some walls when I fall between cracks in a hillside (or the occasional crevasse), but I usually manage to get out somehow. Not by looking at my surroundings, of course; it all looks the same when the camera is three inches away. I guess this is probably a separate issue, anyway.

Just wanted to mention that I’m still having this “zoom indecision” problem in some places. Apparently it had nothing to do with smoothing, but I hope it will also be addressed in an upcoming patch.

Running MIltiple Clients

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

Note that there’s a difference between “multiboxing” and simply running multiple instances of the game client. The former leads to four similar characters doing exactly the same thing in sync, while the latter enables one user to share crafting materials between accounts (though the GW2 mail system makes this method less necessary than it was with GW1).

The difference is the method of input; if you control more than one window at a time, it’s not cool. You’re getting four times the loot for your effort. If you’re just switching between windows (only one of them receives input at a time), then playing more than one is more likely to yield less loot for your effort than one account would. That is, if you’re trying to play two characters at once legitimately, then it’s probably more trouble than it’s worth; you won’t play as well, and you’ll succeed less often, yielding less loot.

If you’re doing it for non-loot reasons, then I can’t imagine anyone having a problem with it. But then again, I don’t really see the point, either.

Game Minimizes Randomly

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

I had a similar issue.

I am running two monitors (GW2 maximized on one). I found the cause was that I had Citrix processes running in the background and periodically they stole ‘focus’ from GW2 and I end up on my desktop. I had the same issues in WoW last year…

My solution was to go into Task Manager and disable all the Citrix processes (used for accessing my work network from home). I have Citrix set to launch on PC start-up so I go through this process whenever I am going to launch GW2.

Sorry if this is not helpful, figured I’d share just in case…. it did fix my issue in GW2 and WoW.

Ulari

You may find it more convenient to set up a shortcut for this.

Basically, you write a batch file to close the Citrix programs and launch GW2.exe.

It’s a combination of this link and this one.

What I’m thinking is something like this:
Create a text file in Notepad and insert the following (with file names/locations changed to suit your needs):

taskkill /im Citrix.exe (or whatever it’s called)
start "" “C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” (or wherever your Guild Wars 2 program is located)

If there are other processes you need to close, you can add them to a new “taskkill /im” line, and they should close properly if they’re running. And if they’re not, it should be fine.
When you’re done, save it on your desktop as something like “GW2.bat” so it’s executed as a batch file.

Then all you’ll have to do is double-click it to close Citrix and open GW2.

Why so many mobs when taking out the siege weapons after regrouping? It’s impossible to complete.

At that point, I had just enough allies to make it challenging.

However, if I’d stopped fighting long enough to figure out what I was doing with Zott’s explosives (I still don’t know exactly what happened, but between the two of us, we managed), they may have overwhelmed me. All I know is that Zott asked me something, I told him to blow up some stuff, and then he obeyed. Since he laid down several bundles of explosives, I occasionally picked up one and used it, just to be safe.

One way or another, the job was done.

For those who can’t wait, here’s how I stubbornly completed this quest tonight:

Once you start down the ladder, you have a few seconds (not sure how many— maybe 4?) before you’re teleported back on deck. So I made it by repeatedly going as fast as I could to grab the goop, running back downstairs (because I was teleported already), and quickly running toward whatever looked like a hull leak while tapping the F button.

You can revive Merri from the deck. If you have a skill to summon allies (I used a hammer and some hot dogs), that will help take out some oozes. Speed boosts help with goop retrieval and leak plugging.

So it is sort of possible, but not really advisable. By the time I made any progress with this, my wife had already given up and left the instance.

Kill the 15% Tax

RoyHarmon.5398

It’s not that. It’s the fact that you can post stuff you come across directly from your bag to the TP. This needs to be killed and then the “1c more than vendor” prices will disappear.

No, this needs to remain. The 5% to post an item is in place people because people would just use the TP as storage, posting things for a thousand gold, knowing no one would ever be able to buy it and when they got back to town just take down the item.

I think many people miss the point here.
The reason so many people post for 1 copper above merchant value is that they don’t know any better.
I suspect that some players may be willing to sacrifice the list price to get it out of their inventory from the middle of a zone.

However, I think that while the listing fee may be simple enough, the overwhelming majority of players don’t realize that the 5% list price is followed by another 10% when it sells. I sure didn’t pick up on it right away.

Do you know why?

The game never tells you. You can only find out by “counting your change” and double-checking the math upon pickup, or by reading the complaints of others.

The real problem here isn’t simply fees. The problem is hidden fees, and I hope that will be corrected in the very near future. Not necessarily by the removal of any fees, but at the very least, by a more transparent (or visible) tax notification.

I’ve noticed that my (formerly soulbound) recipes are now labeled as “account-bound” following this update, but they still behave as though soulbound.

Is this a known bug? To be fixed, or too minor to warrant attention?

Battle of Claw Island trebuchets won't fire (blocking progress)

There were two trebuchets in my instance, and only one of them worked. That added to the confusion.

My wife and I took turns on the “working” one until we figured out how to do it.

I had this problem, too, and was really confused about it for a while. I was just about to give up when I somehow discovered the push-to-hold function by accident.

Perhaps a “Helpful Hint” would be of some use here.

My Creative ALchemy 3D sound utility also places a .dll in the directory, so I’m guessing that alone isn’t too big an issue; I’ve been using it since about 2009 with the original Guild Wars, as well as this game since beta.

Dungeon Finder Sorely Needed

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

You would have to leave the dungeon to LFG back in the open-world map. The instance remains open for (I believe) 15 minutes with nobody inside of it. So just make sure you pop back in once in a while to refresh the counter while you’re looking to fill your group.

Can anyone tell me more about how this works? How do you get back into the dungeon, for instance (no pun intended)?

I was in Twilight Arbor (story) one night with my wife and three random strangers, and we weren’t doing well. After about 45 minutes, just after defeating the first champion, the party leader suddenly said, “Sorry guys, I thought this would be shorter, I’m exhausted.” And then, BAM! We were back in the forest, dazed and confused.

We later heard that when the leader leaves, everyone is kicked out. We also were told that the leader can transfer leadership to another player (which added insult to injury).

The next night, we decided to try it again. Our group was much more coordinated, but two of the players had connection trouble and disconnected a few times, and one player had to leave partway through. My wife and I expected to continue on without him (I was the party leader), but then someone volunteered to go and find someone to replace him. I was confused, to say the least, but then an elementalist showed up, we took out the second champion and were able to finish the dungeon!

Prior to reading this thread, all I knew about the LFG panel on the contact list was that it put you on a list and made an icon over your head. All I knew about entering/leaving dungeon instances was gleaned from the experiences described above, though I would have assumed (based on the ubiquitous instancing in the original Guild Wars) that once a player leaves an instance, there is no way back in. That’s obviously not so. Where can I learn more about this topic?

TL;DR: How does the LFG system work?

This has happened to me a time or two, though I don’t recall having to restart the computer to fix it. I believe I only restarted the game client. No idea what’s causing it.

I would do more to report it, but because it’s fixed by restarting the client, I don’t think the command line diagnostic thing would help much. But I could be wrong, I guess.

You’d probably be surprised by just how many players do not want to hear it.

However, a bug is a matter of things not working as intended, not someone’s personal preference. This seems like a bug, and I agree that it should be fixed. You know, eventually. When they finish with things like this.

Video Card Upgrade

in Account & Technical Support

I’m currently running two 5570’s in Crossfire. I have a used 6770 on the way (via eBay). My wife already has a 6770, and it looks incredible next to mine. The auto-detect sets all of her options to “High” or “Ultra.”
Then again, she has a Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition and I have a Phenom II X4 910. That might make a difference… If you like, I can post back here later this week to let you know. It should be here tomorrow, or possibly Wednesday.

Actually, the card arrived yesterday; they put it in my neighbors’ box, though, so I didn’t realize it was here until last night, and I haven’t had enough time to really work with it yet.

I did install it, however, and apparently my CPU is indeed my bottleneck. It’s either that, or some setting somewhere. I saw little improvement on the “auto-detect” settings, either in the settings themselves or the FPS they yielded.

Just to be sure it wasn’t some kind of problem with the card (the sticker on it actually said 6750 DDR3 something, though GPU-Z confirmed it’s a GDDR5 6770), I swapped it with the card that runs on high-ultra settings at 60+ FPS on my wife’s computer. No change whatsoever. I even tried it in Crossfire, with the bridges and everything! Still not a sliver of a difference.

So either I’m overlooking some settings (with which I’ll tinker endlessly, I can assure you) or my Phenom II X4 910 isn’t cutting the mustard like her Phenom II X6 1100T is. It’s odd; aside from the CPU, I would have said I had the better system, but I guess that’s like saying, “Yeah, aside from the engine, I totally have the beefier truck.”

TL;DR: If the rest of your computer is beefy but your graphics card is significantly less capable than a 6770, then yes, you stand to gain much in terms of performance. Otherwise, the 6770 may not be your bottleneck, and something else could be holding up your system.

Neutral creatures shouldn't always fight when attacked.

This isn’t gonna work the way you intend it to. It will become way to butt-frustrating to chase down a constantly-fleeing enemy, and eventually pull you into a hostile enemy. It will only cause more frustration aside from all the bugs that blocks progression (personal story, map quests/tasks).

Why in the world would I be chasing down a deer in the first place? And I’m not aware of any personal story missions, tasks, or dynamic events which rely on killing them…

If it were that big an issue, though, and I absolutely had to kill a fleeing animal, I could still use ranged attacks. Just don’t attack it until you’re up close, then you have plenty of time to hit it while it tries to flee out of your range.

Okay, so I did a task for Snow Leopard this morning in which I turned into a leopard, snarled at bushes, and had to chase down the things that ran out of them. While they were running, they were yellow. Once I hit them with an attack, they turned red and fought back. I would argue that they should keep running, but the snow leopard form should have some kind of skill that would make the direct confrontation unnecessary. The deer/raccoon/moa could keep trying to run, but it would be crippled or the man-leopard would be faster. Perhaps the “pounce” skill could be like the ranger’s “Swoop” skill, or the guardian’s “Leap of Faith,” and it would close the distance.

Dolyaks, boars, some moas, and possibly stags could choose to stand and fight, though I’ve not known a stag to actually do that in real life (especially when attacked with a ranged weapon, or simply startled). When cornered, of course, they would try to fight however they could.

I don’t think the flight mechanic (to flee, I mean, not to fly) would be a problem, as I’ve actually had some things run away from me in a fight— centaurs, perhaps, and sometimes krait. In those cases, however, it wasn’t a problem to chase them down and finish the job.
