This is true even if another person, regardless of profession, grabs the banner. Skill #5 does not work for anyone.

Right.

Also, it’s for all the banners. I’ve tried them all, even Battle Standard, thinking that its slightly different skill bar might make a difference. But it doesn’t. Skill #5 doesn’t work for it, either.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the “Known Issues” page, and despite this bug having been reported multiple times since the July 26 update, it hasn’t made it to that list. I assume the in-game bug reports and forum posts have fallen through the cracks.

So, to reiterate:

Banner skill #5, “Plant Standard,” doesn’t work. I mean, it doesn’t actually do anything. Pressing the button has no effect at all. Doesn’t even put it on cooldown. It’s like it may as well not exist.

Thank you.

Hearing Player Shouts for Map

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

I know this is an old thread, but I’ve noticed this happening to me a lot over the past couple of months, at least.

For example, I was standing on the trebuchet in Battle of Khylo yesterday on my human guardian with nobody nearby at all, and I heard quite clearly (as though from my own character) a male sylvari saying, “Someone help me!” My wife was in the map with me (but also nowhere near anyone else) and she heard it, too. She confirmed that it sounded like it was coming from right next to her, so it wasn’t just me.

This is just one example. It happens to me several times per session. I don’t see it on the “Known Issues” tracker, so I wanted to make someone aware of it. I’m actually surprised I couldn’t find anyone else talking about it here.

Had a deserter, still lost a pip.

We had a dc at the beginning of a game then came back halfway

oh, the system might not count it if the person comes back

Ours didn’t come back, though.

And as I recall, there’s a “grace period” before it counts them as a deserter… I want to say 2 minutes? After that, even if they come back, it counts them as a deserter.

Maybe that’s part of it. The guy left our match a few minutes into the game, but according to my match history, the whole thing lasted just over 7 minutes. Maybe he wasn’t gone long enough to be counted as a deserter before the end of the match.

If that’s the case, I think the system is flawed. The amount of time it would take to, say, reboot your computer (if it crashed), open Guild Wars 2, and reconnect to the match— that is, the amount of time that should be allowed by a “grace period”— is way too long to use it as a criterion for “forfeit” of games. Just 30 seconds of 4v5 can be enough to change the outcome of the match, but it’s nowhere near enough time to allow a player to reconnect.

Still, decoupling the two would present its own problems (“I’ll just DC long enough to count it as a forfeit but not long enough to get a penalty!”), so I don’t know what the answer is.

But that’s assuming this was the cause of the discrepancy. That may not be the case at all, I don’t know.

did either team get to 400 points ? i think desertion doesn’t count if 400 or maybe 300 points are hit

otherwise you could do your team a solid and log out to prevent the other four from losing a pip; the penalty is only 15 minutes anyway – one extra long pee break

The score was 166 to 500.

If a player from your team deserts the match, and your team is then defeated, you’ll lose no pips for that match (and the match won’t count as a loss should you be on a win streak).

My wife and I just played a ranked match while on a winning streak. But as I’ve come to expect, team chat did what team chat does, and one guy ragequit, leaving the game. We lost, of course.

I had just advanced to the next tier in the emerald division, so I didn’t have any “valence pips” to lose. However, my wife did, and she lost one at the end of the match. Also, it appears to have counted as a loss (apparently ending our winning streak).

What’s going on?

EDIT: In case someone tries to look into this, the match ended at 10:33 pm CST.

Upcoming Changes for PvP League Season 2

in PvP

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

Unless I am reading this wrong, this sounds horrible for casual/low mmr players who will have to face high ranked players at the start of the season, thus putting them off pvp altogether. It sounds like it is best not to play in the first week of the season at all……. I won’t be.

Exactly. If you are a casual/low mmr player i would highly recommend missing the first week of season 2. That way the better players will have moved several tiers already and you wont have big losing streaks on day 1.

I’m not sure it’ll take a full week, given the way the win streak works, though it depends on how many extra pips they get too, but yeah. At the same time, you’re still much more likely to be facing the middle of the distribution rather than the tail, so it depends on how bad you are. The longer you wait, the more Amber and Emerald will only be low MMR players though. There’s a perverse incentive to delay playing as a high MMR player, in that you’ll win streak a lot more once the divisions are more stable.

But it’s all temporary disruption. You’ll plateau in the same places.

We want to encourage new players to try the league (so we have a higher player population and shorter queues) – if they start off being trampled by high ranked players, game after game, it will be a horrible experience for them, and they won’t come back!

You know, I don’t mind getting stomped anywhere near as much as the trash talk that so often accompanies it. Not to mention the (random) teammates who think that our loss must be caused by the rest of the team… And then feel the obligation to inform us of how bad we are, what we should do instead of ranked PvP, etc.

I’m so often tempted to hide team chat altogether, but I’m always afraid I’ll miss something important.

I really think there should be some kind of “maturity rating” that helps determine your team makeup… Good luck designing that system.

Guild Mission Problems

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

Guild missions have been broken – in one way or another – since the expansion (this past week was the FIRST week we were able to do them all without experiencing a bug – and that apparently has already changed) – yet the Gorseval bug with raids (which affects far fewer people) gets fixed within 2 days. This should be considered unacceptable by the GW2 community.

Missions are a part of the game many of us care about – and honestly enjoy – and would like to see expanded upon well into the future.

While were at it, can we finally (after 2 + years) get some new guild missions.

To be fair, we did get a lot of new guild missions when the expansion launched. All of the PvP and WvW missions, in fact.

We haven’t gotten any new additions to the old missions (bounties, etc.), but we did get new mission types. And that was pretty cool.

Now, if only we could get them all to work properly…

World vs World Holiday Sneak Peek

in WvW

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

Before we jump into the changes, we just want to make it very clear that the changes you’ll read about below are not a part of the big World vs World update that we’ve previously mentioned. This update is the first of what we hope are more regular updates to the existing core of World vs. World.

We’re going to hold off on picking a release date until we have a chance to review your feedback, but we’d like to target early 2016. So please add your feedback about these proposals to this thread.

That seems remarkably vague to me. If the “big WvW update” is less regular than the changes that target “sometime in the next several months,” I don’t think I’m qualified to speculate on when we’ll be seeing that one.

Regardless, these changes sound interesting. The fight is effectively over for defeated players, since respawning in a map as huge as the desert borderlands means you’ll never get back to the fight before one side has wiped out all traces of the other.

The dolyak changes sound very reasonable.

Currently, catapults take forever for small groups. Running to a supply camp and back takes long enough for guard NPCs to respawn several times, so one or two players (depending on the number of NPCs at that location) need to stay behind and protect the construction site. That means it takes more trips to the supply camp, which becomes tedious (especially for the ones guarding the siege). It’s still quite possible to take keeps with a small group in this way, but only with a significant time investment; also, it’s probably only possible because the Deserted Borderlands usually don’t have many players defending on the mid- to low-tier servers (in my experience).

The rally limitation sounds a little extreme to me, but it’s impossible to know the full implications until we see it in action. I foresee considerable frustration for many players, especially in combination with the new limitations on reviving in combat.

I’m a fan of Dreamer. It took me years to get it, but darned if I’m not thrilled with it.

The sound makes my ears bleed.

Ok ok, you guys. I was going to say something about how I wish The Dreamer had an option “Whinny/Don’t Whinny” component, but that seemed sort of rude, given it’s a PonyBow™ and I should be willing to take the whole package or not choose it at all.

I have only had a couple of occasions when I’ve been asked “Can you turn that off?” and once when I was asked “What IS that sound.” I do admit, it’s a little… noticeable. But the whole visual is so splendid that I’m ok with that small drawback. ( ~nudge~ Get the ranger ref? draw-back????)

I just want to point out that while I also find the sound to be a little grating, I love the Doppler effect you get with it. I can tell whether the person is coming toward me or moving away from me simply by the pitch of the ponies.

Subtleties like that really add to the experience.

64-bit Client Beta FAQ

Idk I just try the 64x client but it seems like my fan does run way faster(means more heat) than it did before. Is that normal or maybe I need to configure something.

It does a bit more work for parsing files, but it shouldn’t be anything significant.

I’m also seeing this, but judging by my OpenHardware graphs, it seems to be more of a GPU issue. I definitely saw an increase in GPU usage when running the 64-bit client, with a corresponding increase in fan speeds (and noise).

I can’t say anything specifically about Mumble as I haven’t tried it, but this is likely on Mumble’s end. Probably they’re just not properly identifying the game client due to the executable name being different. Try renaming the 64-bit executable to just Gw2.

But on another note Johan, it appears that mumble overlay for chat is not recognized with the new client. Is there a fix or work around for this? I would hate to have to revert to the 32bit just to be able to voice chat with my guild members.

I’ve also noticed this. Has anyone had any luck with it? I tried a few settings in Mumble with no luck (mostly just whitelisting Gw2-64.exe).

I just noticed this:

I also can’t get Overwolf (anything that worked fine with the 32-bit client) to work right in the 64-bit client. It doesn’t lay over the game. I don’t know if it’s GW2’s fault or Overwolf’s.

I’m running both versions with the same settings, Windowed Fullscreen

Rename gw2-64.exe to gw2.exe

You can rename the old 32-bit version before to something else to have a backup.

Does anyone know if that works for Mumble?

How does my character know Mordremoth?

in Living World

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

First, I feel pretty special having a thread necro’d like this. I also have a strange craving for brains…

Second…

I want to address the comments about the player character’s knowledge of Mordremoth and how that fits into the story. For some players, this may have felt like it came out of nowhere. Up to this point, the only explicit mention of Mordremoth in the core campaign was on the Teeth of Mordremoth skill in Crucible of Eternity.

Season 2 of the Living World assumes that the player character has completed the Personal Story, killed Zhaitan, and has attained the rank of Pact Commander. It also assumes completion of season 1, that the player character killed Scarlet, and has a friendship with Rox, Braham, and the rest of the crew. Because of the PC’s assumed rank in an organization that deals in fighting dragons, and that such knowledge isn’t really a secret (but isn’t widely known as characters in the world have no reason to openly discuss it until now) we wanted the player to make the call by identifying the dragon in a conversation among friends. In hindsight, there should have been more build up or discovery before reaching that point. Lesson learned.

We want to seed Tyria with lore bits and other items that can better educate adventurous players seeking more knowledge on the subject. Keep your eyes open in future releases. Thanks so much for taking the time to post your feedback regarding episode 2.

The problem’s not really about the feasibility of a high-ranking officer in a dragon-hunting organization knowing the name of a dragon.

It’s about the feeling of surprise you get when your own character boldly proclaims some truth that you weren’t aware of. It has the effect (for me, at least) of making me think I missed something— some story step, some object I was supposed to interact with— that would have revealed it to my character before I declared it to the rest of the group.

It’s that sense of dissonance. That confusion. That moment when you say (in my case, to my wife playing next to me), “Whoa! What was that? Who is Mordremoth, and how do I know him? Did I miss something? It’s like I’m making this up as I go.”

So it’s great that you can say, “We thought it was obvious that the leader of the Pact would know about dragons,” but I think the most important promise you made was:

Lesson learned.

So, in the past year, has anything been done about it? I wouldn’t know because I actually haven’t played through it since last spring, but clearly there are those who have and found it lacking. Are there any plans to improve this part of the story and streamline the experience a bit?

Theres no crash so no report just flicker flicker flicker black black…. it just now happened again.

That sounds like you are running in FullScreen in a resolution that is different than your desktop resolution. Have you tried running the game in windowed full screen mode to see if that helps?

Yeah running in fullscreen but all my resolutions match i will try afew things and see what happens including windowed fullscreen.

Mine crashes only when I start the game in fullscreen. If I wait until the character selection screen loads, I can Alt+Enter at any point after that with no problems at all. Even logging onto a character and returning to the character selection screen works fine, as long as the game doesn’t launch that way. Ever since the patch that added new graphics options (coincidentally, the same day AMD released new graphics drivers), I’ve had to launch it “-windowed” or risk intermittent black screens and system crashes (in that order).

System crash when launching in fullscreen.

RoyHarmon.5398

About 2-3 weeks ago— around the time of both the GW2 update that added new graphics options, and the latest AMD driver release— my game client started locking up my whole computer at the character selection screen. My caps lock key wouldn’t light up, so Ctrl-Alt-Del wasn’t an option, and after letting it sit there for five minutes or so, everything was still unresponsive.

When launching the game client, everything seemed to go well until the character selection screen loaded. The little character icons at the bottom loaded first, and the mouse still worked. Once the black background showed the active character, though, the image was kind of washed out, like a picture taken with a really bright flash. Also, just like said picture, the image was stationary. Then it went black again, and after a second or two, the mouse stopped moving. At this point, the computer had to be rebooted manually. After the reboot, the problem occurs again if the game is launched in fullscreen.

I tried to troubleshoot it, and several times I thought I’d isolated the cause only to have the problem reappear…

  1. First, I thought it was a problem with the GW2.dat or Local.dat files. I did a “-repair” and deleted local.dat and gw2-temp files, and that seemed to work for a day or so.
  2. After the above stopped working, I also tried clearing the GFXSettings.Gw2.exe.xml file in addition to the others. It started working once again. I was able to launch the game client a couple of times before the problem resurfaced.
  3. I realized that it only seemed to happen if I started the game in fullscreen mode, so I came to suspect that the new AMD drivers may be messing with my Crossfire setup (system specs below). I disabled Crossfire, and as with the previous steps, the problem seemed to clear up temporarily.
  4. I tried turning off the anti-aliasing options in Guild Wars 2. That didn’t work, either.
  5. I looked all through my motherboard’s BIOS for something that could be affecting it, like some kind of PCI-E GPU voltage setting, but found nothing of use.
  6. I noticed that my video cards were only running at 8x and 4x, so I moved my NIC to a slot that didn’t share lanes with them, and now they’re both at 8×. No change in client behavior, though.
  7. In every case, once the problem resurfaced, it would consistently freeze up if I tried launching the game client again unless I changed something as in the attempts mentioned above. Eventually I tried pressing Alt-Enter as the game was loading, and that led to my biggest breakthrough so far: the problem only comes up if I start the game in fullscreen mode.

At this point, the workaround is to use the “-windowed” tag on my Gw2 shortcut. The really weird thing is, it has no problems at all if I switch to fullscreen once the character selection screen has already loaded. Add that to the list of things that don’t make a whole lot of sense here.

My system specs (if more information is needed, I can give it):

  • Windows 7 Professional x64
  • i5-4670K running stable at 4.2GHz
  • 2x Radeon HD7870
  • 8 GB RAM @ 2133MHz

I’ve been playing with no (hardware-related) problems for many months, and I haven’t upgraded or changed anything recently. I can get by for now just by using the “-windowed” workaround, but it eats at me to know there’s a problem that I’m avoiding simply because I haven’t solved it yet.

The bigger issue I’ve had is that sometimes when I load the game client, it locks up on the character selection screen and I have to reboot the computer (even caps lock doesn’t respond). It doesn’t do it every time; I’m still trying to figure out what triggers it. I suspect it’s one of the new graphics settings, but I’m not sure.

Condition damage in PvE

Unless you’re at a waypoint with a large, DPS-heavy group, this is an unrealistic fight.

This is the key to a lot of these bounties now, don’t engage unless you’re near a wp. Smaller guilds should probably wait til another guild who needs the same bounty shows up which means doing it during prime time.

As for dungeons, some of the mobs are stacking heavy dots but a well rounded group can easily get around that. Some full zerker gorups are getting destroyed trying to do it the old way.

A smaller guild can’t wait very long for some of those bounties. Especially when there happens to be a world boss about to spawn in the same map. Those can be hard to avoid, since a world boss spawns every 15 minutes and the guild bounties are randomly chosen. Asking if anyone’s seen Devious Teesa when the Claw of Jormag is up is a lost cause.

Regarding the dungeons… I’m not talking about “full zerker groups,” I’m talking about the players who reach level 30 or 35 and get a letter saying they should check out this dungeon. If they do, they’ll be very disappointed by the experience.

Yeah, I noticed that, though it didn’t seem as severe as stacking burning and such.

Am I overreacting? I’m surprised more people haven’t commented. Was this topic already discussed at length and I missed it?

Orr should be remade

The Personal Story would have to be changed though. It revolved around Orr towards the end.

If only new maps (in areas that aren’t currently available) are revitalized, then the Personal Story would be completely unaffected.

I think the best solution would be to create new maps set in the as-yet-unexplored areas of Orr. Keep the three existing maps as they are, but have the ones further inland be less dead.

Condition damage in PvE

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Since the condition damage buff, I’ve noticed a lot of enemies in PvE being WAY more challenging. That wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing; however, the particular aspects I’d like to discuss are just way over the top.

First example: Guild bounties. Specifically, Half-Baked Komali. This boss has a fire shield that applies burning to whoever hits it. I see on the wiki that there are supposed to be some kind of jellies or something to remove his fire shield, but I’ve never seen them.
Prior to the condition damage update, constant burning wasn’t a big deal; you could just keep attacking the boss, healing through the burn or simply ignoring it if you have enough passive regeneration.
After the update, it’s a horrible, hopeless mess. The burning doesn’t stack duration anymore, it stacks intensity, and that’s a very different situation. You hit the boss a few times and you’re dead; you can try to cleanse the burning as much as you can, but it’s just delaying the inevitable. Unless you’re at a waypoint with a large, DPS-heavy group, this is an unrealistic fight.

I don’t even want to think about Diplomat Tarban. That guy was a pain before, but with a small (and skilled) enough group, it was possible, though having more people scaled it up a bit. I’m glad I haven’t had to try fighting him since the condi buff, but I can’t give specifics on the balance of that encounter.

Second example: Ascalonian Catacombs. This dungeon is no longer suitable for level 30/35. The spider queen is much harder now than it was before, though that’s only one of many enemies that pile on the conditions here. Kholer is certainly no pushover these days, but he can be avoided easily enough. Gravelings… Gravelings are everywhere, and they can no longer be ignored. The massive condition damage from those guys is overwhelming.
For a party full of skilled players on level-80 characters, this may not be so bad. I’m sure there are plenty reading this who complete this dungeon daily. But even those players will have to admit that if a group of 5 players at the recommended level (30 story, 35 explorable) tried to play through this dungeon, they would find it much more challenging now than it was before (and it was never exactly a cakewalk for new players, anyway).

There are probably more examples, but I’m tired of typing. Probably more of the guild bounties, like Yanonka, 2-MULT, etc. I haven’t tried playing through any other dungeons since the update, but there are probably encounters there that could use a balance pass, too.

Has anyone else noticed any other bosses that seem much more deadly after the condition damage update? Do we expect some PvE balance changes in the near future?

Krysard is correct, there is currently not an active season running, so the leaderboards are frozen.

Unless I’m mistaken, the leaderboards worked just fine before the last season was active. In fact, they seemed to be functional long before “seasons” were a thing.

Was it frozen to add “having your name at the top of the frozen leaderboard until the next season” as a reward for doing well? Because I haven’t been able to find anything posted before the end of the season that even mentioned a frozen leaderboard.

Think it’s more of misrepresenting the product

I
They actually had to change their FAO because of this, used to said you’d need to buy the core game, now it says you get it for free.

Misrepresentation of a product in a manner that could effect purchasing decisions is the legal definition of false advertisement.

Telling people (via the original FAQ), that the core game was required before purchasing HoT would certainly effect their decision to buy the core game.

Title 15 U.S. Code Chapter 2 Subchapter 1 Section 55 Additional definitions

(a) False advertisement
(1) The term “false advertisement” means an advertisement, other than labeling, which is misleading in a material respect; and in determining whether any advertisement is misleading, there shall be taken into account (among other things) not only representations made or suggested by statement, word, design, device, sound, or any combination thereof, but also the extent to which the advertisement fails to reveal facts material in the light of such representations or material with respect to consequences which may result from the use of the commodity to which the advertisement relates under the conditions prescribed in said advertisement, or under such conditions as are customary or usual. No advertisement of a drug shall be deemed to be false if it is disseminated only to members of the medical profession, contains no false representation of a material fact, and includes, or is accompanied in each instance by truthful disclosure of, the formula showing quantitatively each ingredient of such drug.

I see Arena net is avoiding us still.

Almost 90 pages with zero response

Of course. They won’t respond until they’ve had several meetings about it, and with so many of the higher-ups at E3, I wouldn’t expect those meetings to take place until Monday.

Give them a few more days. If the problem hasn’t been addressed by the end of next week, I’ll be unpleasantly surprised.

Are Guild halls only in expansion?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

something from the article about the GI HQ.

We’ve used new technology to make the Guild Initiative Headquarters an instance that is shared by you and your guild members. While the Initiative Headquarters is not a full guild hall, it will provide access to existing features that we’re moving out of the guild panel for those guilds that do not upgrade to the expansion.

How does a guild upgrade to the expansion? Do they mean that a guild leader/officer has to upgrade? Or everyone in the guild (which was too absurd to consider prior to the pre-purchase announcement)? Or do enough guild members to complete the guild hall acquisition process have to upgrade, and everyone else in the guild gets to use it after that (which doesn’t seem ideal for small guilds, but all things considered, I don’t want to make assumptions about the company’s priorities)?

Challange, defend the HoT expansion price

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

RoyHarmon.5398

You know how this could have been done way better? Since the game sometimes goes on sale for $10, just sell “Core + Expansion” for $50, and sell “Expansion Only” for $10 less.

The bundle is still $50 (and could be offered as a bundle for new players, but as a convenience thing, not a “plus all these nice bonus items that our loyal veterans can’t have” kind of thing). Those who already have the game can put the $10 toward a new character slot. Those who have an open character slot already can save $10. Many people could be happy.

You wouldn’t even have to put the core game on sale outside of the bundle, you know? As long as the core game and expansion cost $50, what’s the harm in selling the expansion-only product for $40?

The only reason for not doing it this way is greed. The only downside is the potential loss of $10 from each satisfied loyal customer. Many of them, of course, would then put that $10 toward a character slot, but there does exist that possibility that the $10 wouldn’t eventually go to ArenaNet, NCSoft, or whoever fumbled this.

Character Slot for Heart of Thorns? [Merged]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

Since there are no doubt thousands of players who have already pre-purchased under the current model, I think it would be best either to add a character slot to each version (meaning Deluxe and Ultimate end up with 2), or to add a character slot to the “Basic” package and add something of approximately equal value to the Deluxe and Ultimate versions.

That way, people won’t feel ripped off so much. If you just add a character slot to the $50 edition, those who bought the $75 one would say, “Well, if I had known they would add a character slot to that one, I could have saved $25!” Not that they all really would have, because maybe they kinda wanted the extra digital items, but they’d complain about it anyway. And they’d be right to do so. It would be a different decision to make— a decision between $50 for the expansion with character slot and $75 for the expansion with character slot plus whatever bonus items came with that package.

For many players, obviously, that character slot is a major factor in making the decision of which (if any) edition to purchase. If they add one to the $50 game (and I really think they should), then they should add something of approximately equal value to the other two editions as well.

Is it safe to consume the glider?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

RoyHarmon.5398

NO!

I would NEVER recommend consuming your glider. They were not intended to be edible, and if you somehow ended up with an edible “Fruit Roll-Up” version, DO NOT attempt to fly with it! Those were minted as limited-edition collector’s items and should NOT be considered structurally sound.

If you have consumed your glider, you may be forced to use the nearest waypoint.

Why the disconnecting/routing to Switzerland?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

Oh, I’m convinced it wasn’t really going to Switzerland. I just thought maybe it was indicative of some misconfiguration of the GW2 servers, possibly some confusion about which region (NA/EU) I was in, or something. I don’t know. But I need no further explanations about geolocation services.

Regardless, the problem seems to have gone away for now. I assume/hope that whatever glitch was causing my disconnections has been worked out.

Why the disconnecting/routing to Switzerland?

in Account & Technical Support

RoyHarmon.5398

Why would something else likely be on a different route? If that’s the case, what’s the point of a tool like PingPlotter, if it’s not even showing the same route that GW2 would use?

PingPlotter shows the route you take to the specified IP. That is your route to GW2. I was referring to other services, like how you said you had no problems with Netflix. Netflix isn’t hosted in the same location as GW2, thus you connect to it using a different route.

The internet is basically a network of roads. A hop is whenever the road splits into multiple paths. You don’t always take the same path when travelling to different places, but you may take the same path when travelling to the same place. Blocking one path will not block all of them, however the closer it is to your start point, the more trouble you’ll have.

I did try using a VPN, but it didn’t change anything.

You’ll need to try various VPN servers in an attempt to work around wherever the problem occurs. Ensure that the route through the VPN has sufficiently changed compared to your original one.

If you haven’t already, reset your modem/router and, if possible, try a direct connection.

I’m pretty sure the Internet is actually made of tubes. I heard it somewhere on the Internet, I think.

Also, it’s working fine now. No clue what the problem was, except that it must have been on ArenaNet’s end. As I said, the path between them and me was perfect (though the Switzerland thing was weird), but I was still being disconnected every 1-2 minutes. Now, nothing has changed, but it’s working great. I don’t know how it will be tomorrow, but there was nothing causing problems between me and ArenaNet’s servers. Therefore, it seems likely it was some glitch with ArenaNet’s servers. Obviously it didn’t affect everyone, but I wasn’t the only one experiencing these problems (according to map chat, that treasure trove of reliable data).

I would blame a service outage somewhere (I know Time Warner was having a lot of trouble in Texas, according to https://downdetector.com/status/time-warner-cable/map/), except PingPlotter showed a great ping at every stop.

Granted, Pingtest.net was only checking the route between me and Atlanta, so that wouldn’t test the whole route from me to Texas. It would, however, help to rule out problems on my end. That’s also why I mentioned Netflix; not because I’m new to the concept of networking, but because I was using it as evidence that I was actually connected to the Internet and that streaming high-definition movies was working pretty well. Yes, that could also be the case while having issues with Guild Wars, but considering that the disconnects were so frequent, I would have expected problems with just about anything else if it was on my end. Like Pingtest.net.

In summary, I wrote this thread to let someone at ArenaNet know that something weird is going on here, and to let other people chime in with their relevant experiences. There’s little I can do to affect it, if anything, though I certainly tried some of those “no reason this would help, but because I know some guy on a forum is going to suggest it, I’ll do it anyway” solutions. Nothing helped. Nothing, that is, but time.

One of the hops on your route is probably the cause. It doesn’t matter if something else works because it’s likely on different route.

Why would something else likely be on a different route? If that’s the case, what’s the point of a tool like PingPlotter, if it’s not even showing the same route that GW2 would use?

You can try using the -clientport 80/443 option, though it likely won’t help. To try a different route, you’d need to use a VPN. Other than that, all you can really do is wait it out or complain to your ISP.

I did try using a VPN, but it didn’t change anything.

Why the disconnecting/routing to Switzerland?

For the past couple of days, my wife and I can’t play for more than 2 minutes without being disconnected with a 7:11:3:191:101 error. We’ve had no problems with other services like Netflix, Pingtest.net showed a great connection (grade A, 0% packet loss, 2ms jitter, ~23ms ping), and we’ve had no other problems with Guild Wars 2 for several months, at least. We’re on a wired network with cable internet service through Charter Communications.

So I started up my PingPlotter and monitored the hops between us and the Divinity’s Reach map I was in (using the /ip command to determine it was at 64.25.33.67). I observed that the connection was through several regionally-named Charter servers, then something with a domain name of “telia.net,” and finally to some “ncsoft.com” servers, one of which was the target.

I was disconnected within a minute or so and sent back to the character selection screen with the same 7:11:3:… error as before, so I Alt-Tabbed to the PingPlotter screen to see where the fault was. Surprisingly, nothing seemed amiss; everything was still pinging in the green.

That was last night (Central time), so I tried again early this morning, and everything seemed fine. I was relieved; I thought it had been fixed, whatever the problem was. Unfortunately, when my wife and I tried to play again about an hour ago, the problem quickly returned.

I eventually tried looking up all of the servers between us and the target IP using this website: http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/network-location/. It correctly identified my location and the target IP (the GW2 server in Texas), so I checked out the “telia.net” IPs. They all came up Switzerland! The connection seems to go from Atlanta, GA to Switzerland, then back to Austin, TX.

Is this expected behavior? Granted, it may not be the cause of our current connection issues, but maybe it’s a symptom of the same problem.

And no, we haven’t changed anything recently on the computers or the network. If anyone from ArenaNet is reading this, is there any way this could be an issue with your network or systems? The disconnects in particular; the fact that PingPlotter found no problems while I was getting kicked out of Guild Wars 2 suggests to me that it’s not a fault in our connection.

Yeah, I know. I mentioned that I’d read that blog post.

But the leaderboard was (relatively) functional long before they introduced “seasons.” The end of a season doesn’t imply the end of the leaderboard.

My question is, when/where did ArenaNet actually say that the leaderboard has been deactivated until further notice?
