Well necro is out of the question if you dont like pets, if you have the expansion I think rev might fit that bill, warrior, engineer, mesmer, and guardian have a mix of range and melee, guardian or rev can probably survive the best but the guardian forums are flooding with how bad they are right now so I dont know if that will matter to you, I just dont know enough about them to give my own opinion if they really are doing poorly.

None of the classes I mentioned are simple, in fact far from it, but warrior may be the simpliest depending on how you play him or her.

You never mentioned if you have a prefrence of magic as rev is seems to be a darker magic with melee and guardian is just magic/melee nothing holy about it so take paladin out of your mind if thats what your thinking.

In my experience of much older mmorpgs to today is that its either an attitude of one extreme or another you have the to casual who barely want to work and learn their class and you have the ones who make a huge deal out of a mistake and take the game to seriously.

Raiding should be challenging, and require effort on everyone, however it should not be over stressful either.

Thank you guys so much for the constructive advices!. I actually mained a rev when I first bought HoT, but I had a second character which was guardian and I only did pve with it. I find it really lack luster in damage compared to rev. I’ll try either a scrapper or elementalist! Thank you !

I cant believe you let these guys convince you, go to reddit and youll see another side, honestly class forums arent really a good place to get an objective look at the classes. Im leveling my guardian anyways, if I discover its all true oh well ill still enjoy him.

Want to explore all places, fractals, dungeons, world bosses

Would like to get the best armor/weapons possible for PvE.

Ok well how do you like to play against enemies? Do you like complex? Do you prefer tons of skills? Do you like to group and protect others or do you prefer solo or both? Do you like big cloth, medium, or big armor, do you like agile weapons or big fluid weapons? Do you like magic? Do you like just smashing and hacking at things or do you like ranged?

Good that you like them. Of the 3 Rangers I had, I deleted my Asura as the new sword animations for them don’t even compare to the old ones they had. Other races are all right… I guess.

Well I didnt play asura ranger but I can imagine it might look worse, but look at it this way do you really think a ranger would be crouched down like a thief doing near jumping attacks in the same spot or do you think he should be using his sword in a more agile and quicker form distracting his opponents?

Human or sylvari for ranger/druid ? (Poll)

I have no idea how to make a poll on this forum or if its even possible so if you would be kind to vote on this poll here

Question is in the in the title. What do you guys think about human rangers/druids, or sylvari ranger/druids?

Personally i think sylvari fit rangers better..but humans fit druids better.

Cause idk… i always have the humans that went into the maguuma hundreads of years ago and left their mortal lives to become the druids.

On the other hand sylvari have much more cooler “home grown” armor, as well as various weapons that fit them better as a ranger.

Sylvari have the best animations in my opinion for melee attacks. I really like the gs ones with sylvari to.

A friend got my this game as a preszie, was depressed about World of Warcraft and dying on the wait for their new expansion… I hope Guild Wars is gonna be a better experience than WoW for me! OH yeah, sorry I wanted to get some advise from experienced players -_- youtube is great but I really like the old style forum posting better.

It really is a better experience, while it doesnt have traditional quests like wow it has many storyline quests for your class and the living story and some other stuff later, then you have jumping puzzles/exploration and hunt for hero points not to mention the many other things you can do, I find exploration really fun in this compared to any other mmorpg ive ever played.

Well just an update ive been playing my mesmer more and to be honest they feel kind of spellsword like which is fine to, I thought I would love guardians and to be honest they are really boring for me to solo, I think if I was grouping all the time able to use my shields/heals, and buffs for allies it would be far more fun but yea solo is incredibly dull compared to my mesmer but isnt as dull to solo as it was with my ranger lol.

Its funny I took a few of those which guild wars 2 class is for you quizzes and two of them said I should be a ranger because of the versatility of melee/ranged and etc. But it was incredibly dull to play ranged because of how easy it was in open world.

dragon hunter was a bottom 3 spec that got nerfed further away from the meta, it wasn’t “brought down” to equal playing field. it was a 6/10 class that got nerfed down to a 4.5

and no, there isn’t any other viable, at least competitive builds outside of literally the exact same meditrapper build from last season, its simply only 70% as effective now.

there isn’t one single aspect in spvp that DH is the best at, not a single one, anything the DH can do, there is another class capable of doing it much more efficiently, hell we don’t even hard counter thieves the best anymore.

There are plenty of dps meta builds that report doing well what are you talking about?

Ok. I want a horse. I do not care if it will not give me more speed. I just want to feel like those epic characters from artworks (Yeah! There ARE mounts on GW2 artworks and concepts! What would you say about it?).

This is the best reason to want an mount, and we totally agree!

I thought the argument was we dont need mounts, of course I want one for style, but I dont know it might look wierd considering the height of the world/landscapes, and the map size.

  1. Having a character poof them in out of thin air is not immersive. Immersive would be going to a stable to get them, having to rest them, feed them, pay for their upkeep and return them to the stable when done.

Just to make one thing clear – I’m not arguing for or against mounts here, but to make the case for ultra-realism in a game otherwise featuring magic, insta-teleportation and freaking ghosts seems a bit far-fetched to me.

Immersion is subjective. Magic mounts that disappear and appear at my whim are not in any way immersive to me.

There’s nothing wrong with a game having mounts so people can get around faster.

Unless that game already has a system for getting around faster. I’m talking about speed increases, not WP’s. Mounts that circumvent the choice to spec for speed or not are not a good thing in a game where the build system is already spotty on opportunity costs.

I dont agree this mmorpg needs mounts, maybe if it didnt have waypoints, but do not use the argument of immersive when you can go to a map screen and click the waypoint to instant travel lol that makes no sense.

As happy as I am about the patch, I can’t help but feel after so much hard work and labor we’ve gone through, it’s now just being handed out to everyone on a silver platter. So much gold, gems, time spent and now it’s being given out for free. Thanks though?

I don’t understand what you think is so unfair. We got a free shared slot and we got a free level 80 booster along with some minor goodies. It’s not like they’ve given all HoT purchasers a free precursor or something. The freebies are nice, but they’re hardly game-breaking.

Completely agree. But there will always be players that whine about others not having to do what they did.

This is the nature of the beast. Older mmorpgs have to do this to stay relevant.

Totally agree! Usually I criticize the game or patches a lot, but this time it’s just awesome! I don’t understand how anyone could see anything bad with this patch.

Looking around the threads since patch there is really not a single thread with shows any issue with this patch. (Well there are some elitists crying for no reason, but thats all^^)

Thats not the reason they are complaining there are quite a few reasons, one is some people will not learn how to play the game and class and you will end up with pugs and people who have no idea what they are doing and constantly wipe the group, well see what you say in a few weeks from now before you say people are crying.

The other reason is it ruins the sense of progression why play an rpg if your not going to play play the game? However people are right it does help promote more players but it doesnt mean the quality of those players will be any good hopefully they will learn before they pug. And I can understand after you played the content several times as well.

So in otherwords its better to promote players then the cons of this instant level 80, I cant be mad at anet for doing what they needed to get new players. But at the same time you cant be mad at people for seeing the cons of this as well.

Look into it from the other way. I have a good friend who bought HoT recently and asked me every day: Why can’t I go to the content I payed for? In her eyes the GW2 “Prophecies” is just a tutorial area because she payed for the HoT content. Now, she can level up instantly her main toon and she can work on masteries ASAP.

That may be because your friend is to use to phone games with in app purchases where you pay for all the levels instead of actually progress through them to reach the next level.

Gaming shouldnt be about work. It should be about fun. Grinding for loot is not fun and no accomplisment whatsoever. Playing content/gameplay with decent rewards is fun.

Every rpg requires some kind of grinding, what is so bad about working at something in a game that lasts you a while? Are we so impatient we need instant gratification all the time? The flaw isnt the game its with the people.

So now a new player can join the game, use this boost and get instantly to level 80.
On top of that, it also gives you a complete set of soldiers armor, weapons, trinkets, food items, utility items, and unlocks certain waypoints in every level 80 map?
This is just… what?!
Don’t get me wrong, I like the new shared slot, but what’s the point of even playing the game if you’re instantly given everything you need? Doesn’t that just inherently defeat the purpose of playing the maps and lower-level content?

Is Anet that desperate for new players? Please help me understand, because I’m so lost on this one.

Grow up and get over it. If you want this older mmorpg to keep surviving, Anet has to do stuff like this to draw in new players and old players that quit. The 80 level didn’t give them ascended or legendary, it didn’t give them aps, it didn’t give them a pvp rank or wvw rank……there is LOTS of stuff they will still need to grind.

I hear so often on these boards and ingame how easy it is to get to 80. Then, when 80 is given to peeps with some gear, wps, and such, suddenly the waambulance appears and screams how unfair it is.

Give me a break. It is NOT a gamebreaker. And if it is for you, then you shouldn’t be playing a mmorpg.

And yet you think its ok to tell people to grow up and be rude about it? Its just his opinion you can enlighten him without being toxic, and by the way you arent helping new players come in by acting that way.

@drgast – I’m upset because guardian get worthless buffs and hard nerfs when other classes actually get real catering. You must be one of those tower huggers that say guard is op.

It was a 20% nerf to one skill and a 7% nerf to another while 7 skills got cd buffs and 3 skills got damage buffs. Give me a break. Yeah, you’re really being punished alright.

Thanks for clearing this up, all I kept seeing was one side of the argument I dont think once I saw anyone mention 3 skills got damage buffs, clearly they are trying to justify the argument which is very biased with neglecting this part of the patch on guardians if you ask me. So are druids, but that doesn’t make the playstyle any less kitten for those uninterested in the buffbot/healbot role. I wasn’t a support class in GW1, I don’t want to be one in GW2.

Especially creating a role that revolves purely around alacrity when the PvP mobs are out to nerf it to the ground. Pretty terrible to have the class underpinned around one effect.

I want my old Well of Precognition back. If they’re gonna leave in this crap one, the least they could do is add some protection ticks to it and the end explosion could blind foes.

Druids are replaceable. Tempests can heal enough, mesmers can heal enough, guardians and engineers can even heal enough. Chrono is completely irreplaceable. No other class can do anything remotely similar.

Ultimately, you’re just complaining for the sake of complaining. “Oh woe is me, my class is only the best in the game at doing a particular role, I want it to be best in the game at doing the particular role that I like better”.

This patch literally had nothing but buffs for Mesmer, and you’re sitting here complaining that they didn’t buff it enough. Do you understand how absurd that is?

This.

What are you spec ting in today's Patch?

in Guardian

Posted by: Ryou.2398

Ryou.2398

I expect nothing.

Arenanet barely has people to provide PvE content (the recent cancellation of the Legendary Weapons in order to move those 6 employees to help in the Living Story proves it). So if they lack the workforce for the main mode of the game (to build the simplest end game content, as the Legendary items are), what could be expected towards a ultraniche aspect of the game as PvP.

Arenanet lacks PvP players inside their own members, they lack capacity to balance classes and fix issues, and they don’t have a “PTR” system to properly test each patchs as Blizzard does in Diablo III. As result, any unbalance or mess is aired without acceptable testing and remains for months (except if provides an exploit or disruptive effect over the game’s economy, but doesn’t matter at all if the disruptive effect affects the gameplay or the fun).

Really, doesn’t matter too much: most of the content in the game is trivial and can be done with this handicaped class without much effort. In more demanding task as raids guardian/DH is sub-optimal but still viable. But in PvP is crap, so most of players in high level play just actively avoid playing it. When a team choses to get out the meta and to use us… Well… see Orange Logo yesterday.

Also, the bad state of Guardian, Warrior and Thief isn’t the root of the problem: you can buff them or debuf the other classes, but that only will replace some ones to some others.

In order to create a good competitive gameplay every class should idealy have 3-4 viable builds, in the same way in which in MOBAs several dozens of characters have their use. And that’s impossible to get with the current human resources that ANet puts in PvP.

They just made grouping and pve better again by increasing dungeon rewards and incentive to do them.

I didnt see anyone do that in this post, the tc doesnt even sound like he likes rpgs and people where noticing it thats it, and they just basically said stop torturing yourself by playing it if he doesnt like that many aspects of it. It was nothing but constructive criticism much like the tc did.

But in my opinion its silly to come into an mmorpg not expecting any mmorpg elements that make these games massive and rpgs.

You, like many other people who have responded do not understand my point. For some reason you all seem so obsessed with protecting your own reasons for liking the game. This is fine, I don’t want to take that away from you. I’m merely stating my own opinions.

Claiming that I do not like rpgs is REALLY strange. How on earth did you draw that conclusion?

Oh lord, have mercy.

I could probably argue that your comments show you don’t know what an MMO is, but I’m not so stupid to make such personal attacks.

Because of your complaints about stats and weapons and armor which nearly every rpg ive ever played has had that, there may be a few where you have classless systems but there are penalities for using heavy armor while casting magic and so on.

I didnt assume you where I implied you seem to not have much experience in rpgs or like them. I respect its not for you and thats fine but you should also understand why some might think that when you say these things.

Everyone has ways of doing damage and simultaneously supporting, and it’s a core, critical element of the game.

Ok so what classes do more of that then? I doubt all classes are the same.

All of them are relatively equal bar none, as is the entire point of the game.

Then there would no point in classes if that was actually true, your telling me a class cannot build more towards support instead of dps?

Welcome to gw2 PvE, its all about dps. (Unless you are a druid, in which case you may be allowed to heal)

You’re right, if you want play and live by the meta, something that some players, myself included, don’t do. I for one like to play nondps builds in all modes. I even used to play as a tanky ele in all three modes before HoT.

And as far as content goes, this is an mmorpg keyword massive your not suppose to finish it within 1 month, wow was more time consuming then this game and it was far more casual then any other mmorpg at the time. I think its just right as far as being time consuming goes.

Do you not usually play even single player rpgs? Maybe you never enjoyed a real sense of progression before in an rpg, you just hit 80 give it a chance and be patient and once you start being rewarded maybe you will like it more.

Mesmer is cool but it might be a little while before I grab the expansion and I hear they have allot of trouble without the elite spec.

Anyways in other rpgs in general I usually tend to go for more battlemage/spellsword types and versatile classes in general, in eq my main was a bard and mage which was a caster with pets, in wow my main was a druid for the jack of all trades aspects.

So what are really versatile classes? It must be an active playstyle though thanks all.

Mesmer should never have been made around clones and phantasms. This is a widely accepted view on many people here. Having a maximum of three AI pets attack at a targeted enemy once every 6-10 seconds with low health, moderate damage, insanely high cast times and having it count for the Mesmer’s total dps is unacceptable.
These AI pets have an increased factor of uselessness as they do absolutely nothing when the target goes in stealth, they self destruct when you or the target goes out of range, or even worse, just stand there, they don’t properly stealth, disappear completely when the target dies.

20% dps comes from each of your three phantasm and 40% comes from you, which makes PvE hell because your target is usually long dead before you finish casting your first damaging phantasm. New players usually won’t bother summoning phantasms at all because they usually do next to nothing. GW1’s Mesmer never had any clone trash at all, instead using something called “hexes” and dealing increased amounts of effects/damage for each hex.

Everyone has heard this argument before. But what they don’t realize is this clone mechanic that Mesmer is so reliant on is limiting design potential and limiting nerf potential to the point where Mesmer is so terrible at dealing damage in PvP and mediocre damage everywhere else, but Anet doesn’t know what to hammer and what to buff because everything is so tied together by this terrible mechanic. How do you make new future elite specializations without adding or subtracting from clone functionality?

Chronomancer elite tree barely scraped by as passable, and it had FIVE specific traits that deal with clones and how they act. In every trait tree that Mesmer has there are multiple traits that Mesmer could have had that specifically buff phantasms and not the Mesmer itself, unlike other classes, specifically ones with their own minions. This forces Mesmer to use the awful clones functionality that the developers could have avoided by scrapping the clone system altogether. The Clones should be an elite specialization instead or should have never existed. There is only so much you can do with three terrible AI.

So what do you think they can do to improve it? Im thinking maybe a permenent clone of some kind with a specialization maybe?

I realized that gw2 is not p2w.

Before this topic goes any further, I think it needs to be said that Pay-to-win ONLY is attributed with a microtransaction that allow you to gain an advantage over others due to people pouring in large sums of money that they have(iOS cash cow games that let you progress quickly or gain power quickly for example). Pay-to-win does NOT apply just because you have to pay for a game.

Not everything is P2W in GW2, but I feel there’s quite a bit and appears that there’s always more opening up:

It all starts with Cash->Gems->Gold, then:

  • Buy runs in dungeons to get top-end Ascended rings for use in PvE or WvW (which is PvP-based)
  • Buy dungeon achievements
  • Buy numerous other achievements where paths exists to buy them (e.g. Exotic Hunter for Karmic Converter is one that immediately comes to mind)
  • Buy HoT for Elite specs for them being them slightly overpowered in PvP and WvW
  • Use crafting to almost immediately level your character to level 80
  • Buy SAB runs for top-end Ascended weapons, achievements, and infusions (which also give +5 power bonus)
  • Buy raid parties for “The Eternal” title achievement, +161 -> +166 Mastery Points, Insights to obtain legendary armor, etc.
  • Buy old legendary weapons (which have top-end stats)

Love it or hate it, that kind of makes these things have a pay-to-win path in my mind. I’m sure there’s endless more but these are the ones that immediately come to mind. Even by your definition, you can progress quickly (craft your way to level 80) and by HoT elite specs, and gain advantages in PvP and WvW.

I’ll go with “The majority of GW2 can be P2W if you choose that path.” I’m not saying avoid GW2 or that it’s not worth the money. It’s just that P2W exists in the game, in my opinion.

All mmos, where it’s allowed, sell runs such as raids, dungeons, etc.

For example, FFXIV : You can see a lot of Raids selling if you are in a server with a good amount of people.

All MMOs?

Almost all games ever designed if using ingame currency and time is his definition of p2w.

Original Zelda on Nintendo for example, totally p2w because there’s a store in it.

Age Of Empires, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Starcraft, Elder Scrolls, Shogun, GTA, OMG it’s all p2w!!!

I hope thats sarcasm because none of those games had item shops for real money, some had dlc but that isnt pay to win, having a shop in a game is stuff you earn from progression lol your not making sense.

Just came back and have questions.

You guys need to chill obviously I read the criticisms and replied with more I didnt say anyone was wrong, your getting way to defensive.

Oh?

Well see, im sure someone has unbiased objective points of views they can give.

Call me touchy, but it sure seems like you were saying I was wrong. Not to mention your other posts all telling me that clearly everything I was saying was wrong.

There’s nothing wrong with disagreeing, but I’m not a fan of revisionist history.

And what do you call me later reply? Stop being over senstitive. And I never said you where wrong I told you about my experiences and remained skeptical, what do you get upset everytime someone tells you your wrong and this is how you react? You dont see anything wrong with that? You got all huffy because you thought someone was telling you that you where wrong.
