…and would love to know if there’s some good leveling build(forum search didn’t really help as did google). I’m currently level 23, haven’t really played ranger that much before and would like someone to give me some advice as to what NOT to do and some help with some kind of general all purpose weapon to get by be it events or general going from heart to heart.
Thanks!

Soloing is fairly easy with a pet really just about anything can work, I do not recommend longbow atleast until later levels because it is fairly mindless, Greatsword/sword/axe or dagger is great and much more interesting. Or you can try a condition build as someone else already pointed out.

I refuse to play this until atleast most of the skills are useful, as much as id love to play a true battle mage melee/magic id be happy with them dropping these skills for something that is actually useful. Anyways I have not found any info and was just curious if they had any plans to change conjuration down the road.

The most efficient method of doing anything in any game does involve a hefty amount of facerolling. Other methods do exist, but, since efficiency and speed wins the day….

Actually it does not speeding through a dungeon 10 min faster is not that big of a deal, allot of people do not like easy mode, it depends on the players, and there are many different types of players.

There weren’t druids in Lord of the Rings. If you mean Radagast he was a wizard who specialized in talking to animals and was offhandedly mention to be able to change his shape and color, but that was very vague.

Druids don’t shapeshift in Guild Wars. They shed their bodies to become spirits of nature.

Druids don’t shapeshift in the Warlords Battlecry series. Nor in Magicka. Pretty sure the druids in Witcher don’t shapeshift either. If I had access to Google I could come up with more examples but this was off the top of my head.

Just because DnD and Blizzard have druids do something in a specific way doesn’t mean it’s universal.

Edit: Ah! I almost forgot the Might and Magic franchise. Strange since Heroes of Might and Magic 3 was the first game I ever played that had druids in it.

Technically if you ever read real legends on druids they are able to do many many things like shapeshifting, teleportation, speaking with animals, and other strange magics like weather.

Ranger without guns???

Honestly guns at this point would be nice, I know you can do combos and I do not have much experience with the ranger yet but I find shooting arrows as a ranger incredibly bland, allot of rpgs have something along the lines of ice arrows/fire/ and other kinds of kinds like piercing. The combos seem really situational and I would be forced to use traps just to have flavor, really if the ranger had some more flavor with bow I would love this class, the melee animations far outshine the bows.

Well, I’m a pretty casual player and no expert on class subtleties, but oddly started in about the same spot. I leveled a mesmer first, then tried ranger and got bored fast. I’ve switched around a lot since, but right now I’m mostly on my thief.

Thief animations are pretty cool, though more acrobatic than magic-based. Skill 3 on double dagger is basically a back-flip over your enemy! Both melee and ranged are strong, and like mesmer you have a few teleports that can allow you to switch quickly. Thieves also have a good mix of fields and finishers for making combos. The disadvantage, for me, is that I can’t punch buttons fast enough to really survive on pvp – thieves have high damage but low health, and rely on stealth, evades, and speed to stay alive. If you know what you’re doing, though, they are one of the more deadly pvp classes.

Guardian has lots of blue fire magic, but doesn’t seem that versatile to me. Necro might fit what you are looking for, but I’ve not played one past lvl 20, so I can’t tell you much.

And…If you’re planning on doing HoT:
BWE1 I was playing around with Chronomancer traits and found a shatter build in which illusions don’t disappear the first time you shatter, and shattering creates a clone – really enjoyed shatter mechanics for the first time.
Revanent will be amazing. The coolest visuals I have yet seen on this game, and a lot of variety depending on which legends you slot.

Hope this helps!

Wow this does help thanks for the awesome reply, but just a few things, I was told thief have allot of issues and are at the bottom right now and shortbow is not very good.

Guardians have blue flames? Thats cool hmmm it might be interesting do they have slow and fast melee types? Are they boring to you? Any burst dps?

I love this news on the mesmer now I am more excited to play it.

We did TA Aetherpath with 5 rangers as a guild event recently, whole run took around 20 minutes without any problems.
You can faceroll your way through any dungeon there is, as long as people know what they’re doing, with almost any team comp, in a very reasonable time.

Sure, there is a meta team comp for a reason, but using a ranger/engi/necro in your group won’t magically make the run take 10 minutes longer, as long as they are running proper builds and know their stuff.

Right all I am saying is just because its faster does not mean it is a superior build, it really just depends on how you look at it.
Personally I do not get the meta thing, that makes the game far less interesting, I want to rez people, I want to support my group and actually feel like my class is useful instead of facerolling everything.

And that’s exactly why I mostly pvp these days. The sense of “I can actively contribute to my team’s success” is a lot stronger in pvp compared to pve (yes, I know very well about the problems of rangers in pvp, but this is a general statement that goes for any class).

The meta build DOES support your group, that’s the whole point of the current meta builds.
Offensive support; vulnerability and frost spirit mainly. Maybe you get to throw in an axe5 if the guard dies or forgot to bring reflects, that’s about it.
Your typical dungeon run has the strategic depth of a puddle, almost every encounter is reduced to putting down frost spirit and then doing your dps rotations over & over again.

There are some fun boss encounters, but at this point the majority of people that run dungeons have done so for the past 3 years. The content is stale, so they just want to get it over with as fast as possible, hence the hate for everything that is deemed not optimal.

There are plenty of people just like you though, that want to take a different approach to dungeons and not focus on pure efficiency, and that is perfectly fine.

In general I don’t get why there seems to be a constant war between the PHIW and the speedrun crowd, they can coexist just fine, don’t join each others groups and everybody’s happy.

Don’t you think that majority of Forum Rangers are the ones who can use logic instead of aesthetic feeling?
To explain it in English – that most of Rangers you see here know the difference between playing and role-playing?

I humbly apologize for my limited intelligence, o mighty Forum Ranger, but I do not grasp your well-phrased and to the point remark. Once again, I humbly apologize.

Lol well said, at the end of the day most people want a balance of feeling and effectiveness, not everyone only cares about their performance and besides isnt that why you choose a class? If that was the case then you can really pick anything then ranger and pick the easiest and most effective class to play.

I already play a mesmer and I mostly enjoy the utility and mix of playstyles I can use I am still undecided if I enjoy the shatter mechanics, I guess I prefer my illusions to stay out a little longer.

Do keep in mind I prefer look and feel over maxing dps numbers, but I do want to help my groups and be effective. And I usually enjoy all game modes pve, pvp, groups, raids, never tried wvw so I cannot say if I would enjoy that or not.

I have also tried elementalist but I hear the melee conjurations are useless later on and this does not appeal to me because I like to actually melee not just be in melee range with daggers, plus all these skills just sitting there would feel like I am missing part of my class I will wait until they do something with conjuration.

Anyways I am trying to find a fun and versatile class for a good mix of range and melee, I have been playing a ranger but I am disappointed in the bland projectiles of the arrows, they all look the same except on shortbow and even that feels kind of bland, I love the melee animations though and the pets, I was hoping there would be some form of lightning nature magic instead of just heals and roots.

Any help would be appreciated thanks everyone.

Not sure which bottom part you are referring to, but if it’s the one quoted below, then it answers your question – even for something written in 2013.

Again, in AoE situations it’s crap; at level 80 content where you see many veterans and have larger groups, the condition damage sucks and sustained dps suffers more; same goes for dungeons.
But for leveling it’s not as awful as it is later on, that’s merely the point I’m making.

I mostly meant this and the aoe is not a big deal since you can switch to a more of an aoe weapon.
The shortbow shots with 0.5 second interval (give or take) applying a 3 second bleed, which means you can sustain about 6 stacks with it.
Crippling Shot (which is generally your opener) gives your pet bleed on his first 3 attacks; 9 stacks is more than enough to kill any non-veteran+ mob while leveling, especially with a more condition oriented build.

Elite specs will be balanced (eventually, expect broken builds in the first few months) so they’re not inherently better than standard specs, they’re just there to change how the profession plays.

But is it not more passives after level 80? Isnt it alternative progression once you cap so initially you become more powerful? More passives and etc.

Ranger gs/longbow rotation?

in Ranger

Posted by: Ryou.2398

Ryou.2398

I’m new to ranger, so what is the rotation like?

for what game mode? generally, this game does not use rotations. this isnt WoW.

for pve, the meta is LB/1h sword+axe, and the general idea (“rotation”) is weaponswap on cooldown and blow quickdraws on rapid fire and path of scars.

GS doesn’t compete in pve.

GS in pvp/wvw, there is absolutely no rotation, and what you blow quickdraw on if slotted depends on whether you need cc, whether you need to get a Attack of Opportunity proc, whether you need more burst, etc.

a

This is not wow makes no sense there are plenty of useful rotations in this game it depends on the situation.

he said he was a new player. in the context of mmo’s, rotations are something you do over and over on repeat for optimal play. other than maximizing quickdraw, i would argue that there is no repititive series of skills that could be repeated over and over in any game mode for optimal play.

example: the chain CC rotation posted in this thread. thats not a rotation because you can’t loop it. its just blowing all your CC’s in an effective, staggered manner. After you’ve done it, you can’t do it again.

Oh I see yea there are allot of varied ways you can do them.

I did not see it as black or white, but regardless in mmos it really is just like that something to set off the weaknesses just like in any rpg really.

I wouldn’t say that Ranger has the worst DPS – With sword/axe and Jaguar, I get about 2.5k crits per auto, my cat getting 2k, and 4k crits on the axe’s Path of Scars. Condition damage Ranger can pump out more bleeds than most classes as well – I’ve hit 27 stacks in PvP, and that’s not even taking into consideration the burning from offhand torch.

The Ranger’s a jack of all trades class, the way I see it. They don’t do anything BETTER than other classes, but they have the utility to bring lots of different things to a team (Good damage, good conditions, alright team buffing, longest water field in the game, 2 blast finishers, and the pet mechanic allows you to switch between lots of different types of support on a whim.)

Basically dude, I’d recommend you stop asking on the forums and give the class a shot yourself. This forum’s notorious for people who hate ANet and think the Ranger is a kitten class (yet they’re still playing them?). The Ranger really isn’t as bad as they make it out to be – takes practice to use effectively sure, but what class doesn’t? If you want to contact me in game, I’d be happy to chat with you and try and clear up some of your questions – I’ve played with most weapons and traits that the ranger has, so I’d like to think I’ve got a reasonable knowledge of the class ^^

Oh I am actually what are your thoughts on the short bow for pve? I really enjoy it.

Think you need to rethink a bit. There are no healers in this game and if you come in to it presenting your self as a healer and will stay on water through a dungeon, people will go awkward with you. Elementalist are not healers. They are a awsome class with lots of support but they also do good damage and cc, so no ele should focus on healing. They can support with water fields, but those are useless unless noone blasts them, and even so a ele should only briefly pass the wateratunament if it really really is needed and switch again asap.

So when you decide what class to pick dont make the choice out of a role you have in mind, make it from what you prefer playing. If you die to fast then you should rather focus on why this is and fix the build, check with other within the same class, what they do when under heavy fire, what they use and how they get away.

The meta battle webside explain each build very well and you can pick up advice there that works even if you don’t exactly pick the build you read up about. http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki

How factual is this though? Is this just a mentality thing? Why cant someone play mostly support with some light dps and cc?

I think you need to read up on GW2 combat.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Combat

More specifically the GW2 rolls of damage, support, and control.

You can’t sit back and cast targeted (don’t exist) or AE heals on players while doing minimal if any damage and expect that to be a meaningful contribution. Not only that, but whatever contribution you do make is null if you haven’t done enough damage to warrant getting a drop/reward since that’s how participation is calculated AFAIK.

This does not explain why all this saids is you should dps and not use support.

Why is because you can support and heal while still doing meaningful other things and that’s the intended design of the combat in game. Sure, you can sit back and just cast heals and support buffs, but someone else can do that and still do damage or provide other useful things. Essentially, it’s not that you CAN’T do it, its just that other people can do that + more and you are essentially limiting yourself then.

Ohhh hehe I meant more of the idea that we can spec for more support to increase its effectiveness and sacrifice some dps, I did not mean not using all the classes tools at their disposal.

So conjurations builds are not popular?

Ah, I see your point. Yeah ele does not really hit things with its weapons themselves. Lightning Hammer does, but as I said it’s not optimal at all.

Sorry again for ele not being what you wanted, but I would definitely encourage you to check out mesmer or necro, because they do actually hit enemies with the weapons as opposed to only using magical attacks in melee range.

I do not get it, why can we conjure all these weapons but not use them? I do have a mesmer but really it is only 2 melee skills, and necro I hear are to stationary for my tastes.
Thank you for the awesome suggestions though.

What I meant by melee is using real melee moves not just dashing into enemies and staying in melee range there are not melee connected hits to the mobs, anyways so what your saying the only half way decent conjuration is lightning hammer? Well thats very disappointing. Thank you though.

Usually in mmorpgs there is something to offset the weaknesses of a class, so the ranger just offers nothing for having the worst dps?

Some more questions about rangers.

in Ranger

Posted by: Ryou.2398

Ryou.2398

Because ele can drop 25 stacks of might by himself. Even Necro can get 25 might with the right traits.
So 25 stacks of might will make your ele do massive amount of damage + condi damage. Also you have to keep in mind the Fury + 20% crit.

Any player with some experience know this.

If you are 1500 units away from your group happens 2 things: You don’t get any boon and that’s bad because ranger does not drop boons by himself, but what is worst is that you don’t drop any boon/help in your team.

No one want in their team anybody that does not help the rest and can’t do a significant damage to ignore that fact.

Your wrong in plenty of mmorpgs people accept people who can dps and not offer buffs, I have no idea where you get this idea from but that is simply wrong.

Again, rangers do worst DPS than any other class in game. I do better dps with my necro in condi and in power (and necro melee weapons are really bad).

And that’s only because rangers does not have access to stacking might.
In condition build rangers does not drop the same amount of stacks of any condition with no weapon.
Even necro with duumfire can drop more burning than ranger.

So you have a class that does not enough DPS to be acceptable and has no sharing utilities but needs of constant support.
Sorry to break your bubble but it is like that.
[/quote]

You did not I believe it I am just cautious because many mmorpgs have certain mind set in communities of what class should do what, so if they are the worst dps and do not offer anything else I do not understand this, and I do not understand why someone just did not come right out and say this directly, usually a class has something else that balances something like that pet, take for example in wow, even though hunters where not max dps in certain situations, they had a few buffs and specific pets that could off tank for example.

If you spend the time playing instead, you actually get an even better answer than here.

Well maybe I do not want to waste my time playing a class being shoehorned into playstyles because of a mentality.

Well maybe you shouldn’t waste your time then. GG thread is over.

It actually is not over, and spending 80 levels on a class and not liking it is far less time consuming then this. Stop trolling.

Ok about the stacking and buffs, why does a ranger who is staying at range need all those buffs to begin with? This sounds like an excuse for a bad playing getting to much agro so they need the buffs to keep them alive.

Thanks for all the answers I am just stating this is kind of what it sounds like, if a elementalist can play ranged why cant a ranger? And if your going to say no classes should do ranged in dungeons I am done, because that makes no sense what so ever, if anything that comes off as a mentality then a fact.

Not in dungeons in GW2, though, which is what this discussion is about.

Saids who? A few elitists in the forums? Last I checked this is not really an mmorpg for elitists.
