Oh yea it will for sure be staff with a name probably like the monk.
I’d prefer something more along the lines of “vagabond” rather than monk, personally.
I also made a similar thread here, check it out. I agree that the melee staff stance should be revamped.

I want my Rev to hold his staff like the “Endless Monkey King Tonic” does! It just looks like he’s about to crack one off on someone’s head!
Hmm… for a revenant, I’m not too sure how good that’d look considering they’re a warrior-like, heavy armor profession and all. Now if thieves get a melee staff as their elite spec, however, I would absolutely love for them to wield it in this fashion, especially if it’s very acrobatic and stylish.
Monkey King!!!
Ok, if my thief got the Monkey King stance for melee staff, I think I will finally have a reason to play my thief more often!
Right on! I think it’d be a perfect fit for thieves. Plus Anet already has the animation data already in the game. Just make that their default stance with the staff and you’ve got yourself an awesome-looking fighting style!
Let’s face it, if they held their staff like a 2-handed hammer, it’d look really lame and not very fitting for a class as nimble as the thief.

I’d actually prefer a melee staff right now. It has the potential to be one of the most fun weapons out of all the classes if done right.
The thing is… I’d want rifle as well, but its sort of for the wrong reasons depending on one’s point of view. I want a rifle spec later on down the line after Anet figures out ways to bring dual pistols into a more favorable position (some form of Ricochet would be nice, like the dragonhunters longbow auto-attack that bounces to enemies behind your target).
As far as their first elite… yeah, the idea of a melee staff sounds so awesome! The icing on the cake would be if their stance with the staff was like the Monkey King, given that thieves are nimble and acrobatic in nature!
(edited by Seabreeze.8437)
Man, I still think giving it the same properties as the dragonhunter longbow auto-attack would be a good way to bring it back. I mean, at the time of the dragonhunter’s release, Anet was very proud of themselves for having developed this new technology for battling mobs (they said so themselves), so why not apply that technology to the thief’s pistols as well? It would encourage proper positioning and keep thieves on the move, which is what thieves are all about: moving and positioning. Why not play off that?
So you’re basically upset because some people don’t agree with your opinion. As a result, those who don’t 100% agree with you are closed-minded zealots who apparently don’t care about the profession we love and play and are ruining thieves as a whole. Despite me saying “I wouldn’t mind rifle, but I prefer melee staff right now,” I’m still some kind of crazy person for even preferring something different that what you want. You also felt compelled to make a new thread further spitting on those who simply have a differing opinion than your own. Nice.
I could go on, but please refer to sebradle’s post above me to get the gist of it. This is absurd.
kthxbai
We need the thief’s elite spec already. Please let that be the next one in line.
Oh my god, that would be HEAVEN (And we do lack burning)!!! For us I mean… but hell on the other side
(but basically the image represents what my thief would look like loosely)
Sabo, eh? Nice. They do have a couple of top hat skins, and with the plethora of coats the medium armor set has, you should be able to pull off that look pretty easily.
That’s One Piece, though. You should be careful about posting… you know…
<_<
>_>
…anime.
Because apparently that’s the only reason we want a melee staff. (shrugs)
Thank you, sebradle, for emphasizing what I’ve been trying to say all along.
Also yolo, my favorite ninja turtle is Donatello. Just letting you know so you can use that fun fact against me.
I thought I was over this until I just noticed what the icon for the Invigorating Precision trait is. The sadness is 100% back.
Dude… I hadn’t even noticed that one. That’s rough.
I’m gonna go ahead and bump this because there are lots of good ideas here and I dislike seeing all the really cool-looking hairstyles go to the norn while humans are left with the table scraps of creativity.
I’ll post more ideas and pics when I have a bit more time, but I really like what I’m seeing so far. Let’s keep ’em coming!
I’d like staff to focus more on putting on a stylish acrobatic display with good sustained DPS, personally. It really doesn’t seem like a condition weapon to me, unless you want to count vulnerability, but bleeds and poisons and such seem more suited for bladed weapons. Controls would be okay, but it’d be tricky considering thieves use initiative rather than cooldowns.
So I can definitely see it being a solid sustained DPS, possibly with good vulnerability stacking and access to evades. To make sustained DPS viable, an aggressive, cleaving fighting style would probably go well with SoM and IP as well (the removal of Ricochet really hurt this trait combination for me, but that’s a whole other topic).
This is just off the top of my head though. We’ll see what actually happens when the thief elite spec gets revealed, whatever it may be.

“(as well as many other people)” I’m done explaining myself.
Erm… what’s wrong with what I said, exactly? It’s not like I said “as well as everyone else” or “I speak for everybody,” because I know I don’t. That said, quite a few people have indeed stated that they are aware that staff is not 100% confirmed, sebradle included, but I guess you conveniently ignored those statements.
We must now embrace his bias of us and start posting pictures of ninjas and kungfu masters.
Don’t forget anime freaks that scream “kawaii no waifu” as we charge into battle.
I could really get behind a Whip.
That… could be interpreted very differently than what you are implying, lol.
You guys are here saying “Staff!” “Rifle!” and I just want my pistols to work…
Indeed. I’d rather they fix dual pistols than bring a rifle in to replace them. If a rifle spec had stuff that helped us gunslingers, I’d be ecstatic.
^ It’s funny how you are saying I’m being ironic when I (as well as many other people) have repeatedly stated that we are well aware that nothing is certain until Anet makes it so. You seriously keep talking like we are touting around melee staff with 100% certainty when we know it’s NOT 100%. It’s getting ridiculous at this point.
Welp, I’m gonna go play Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm and pretend like I’m a staff thief! (jk I actually don’t have that game)
Need mods to close this thread. This is getting quite toxic. There’s too much hate for too many silly reasons. Name calling someone over their preference in a “fantasy” game is fatuous. Someone inform the mods! THE RED CAPES ARE COMING! THE RED CAPES ARE COMING!
Totally agree.
Really? All the pro-staff players are anime freaks? Really dude? So does that make all pro-rifle players Call of Duty fanboys or what?
Also, is this the fan made rifle kit you’re talking about?
Y’know, since fan made kits are apparently what Anet bases their elite specs on…
Sigh, this debate—if you can call it that—is so tired. I wish they’d just give it to us already, whatever it is. Especially since there’s no point dragging on like this. Whatever Anet has planned is set in stone at this point, save for minor balancing and such. But of course, even though this has been said numerous times, the war is going to carry on until we finally get our elite spec.
Seriously…. like anything I have said so far was bullkitten.
Umm… yes?
And I am talking about what is better vs what everyone thinks they want or what thief is getting. Staff, whether we get it or not, is not going to do anything for the profession.
How do you know what’s better? Given rifle’s track record, can you really be 100% certain that rifle would be better (and making OP would not be better, btw)? Also, just because you can’t think of anything to make staff unique, doesn’t mean nobody can.
I won’t dissect your points on staff being redundant, because Gray already did that.
And user designed skills do count. If you would talk to RedSpectrum, he’ll tell you that necro’s elite spec’s concept was based off of his idea. There were players supporting both of their ideas and so far one of them happened. No reason to not suspect it’ll happen again.
That’s some next-level weird logic right there. I don’t even know what to say about that…
…people would rather pretend they are shinobi, throwing shuriken/kunai everywhere while screaming “kawaii no waifu” than give players another option for combat.
Bro, you left pragmatism two train stations ago. You’re in the salt mines now! XD
Aw c’mon, really? You’re gonna let the war in the thief sub-forum continue on like this?
Okay, it’s cool that we’re getting another elite spec reveal, but seriously I need to know what the thief elite is going to be!
How you believe the Warriors feel?
Admittedly, I don’t frequent the warrior sub-forum as much, but I didn’t think there was a heated battle going on there. From what I see it’s mostly:
“So what elite weapon are we getting?”
“I dunno… torch I guess?”
“But the berserker pic we saw has no weapons.”
“BARE HANDS, BABY! (insert bear hands joke for any norn player)”
Other than that, there’s discussions about the current state of warrior, but nothing to the degree of the melee staff/1200 range rifle war dragging on in the thief section. I could be wrong though, but man, it’s getting pretty ridiculous.
^ Vagabond would be a cool name for a melee staff thief, by the way.
Aw c’mon, really? You’re gonna let the war in the thief sub-forum continue on like this?
Okay, it’s cool that we’re getting another elite spec reveal, but seriously I need to know what the thief elite is going to be!
I’m trying to find the question in that wall of text…
Sooo… is this still pragmatism or are you salty now?
Its still pragmatism.
K, just making sure. :p
On a sort of related note, I’m starting to get the feeling that Anet is purposefully holding the thief elite spec back just so this war can drag on. It’s so worn out that I just want to know what it is already!
So forum discussion counts as evidence because people had these discussions before any actual evidence came out in the form of actual data-mined art assets. So far every art asset mined from the same batch has now shown up as elite spec in-game artwork. Also two of the multiple mined elite spec weapon models the war horn and now shield are elite spec weapon models. (Both were mined from the same data-mine batch as the thief staff along with all the art works that are not utilized in game for elite specs.)
So unless anet wanted to throw thief on the back burner and make a bunch of changes which I don’t think is highly likely in game development seeing as how they are time crunched as it is. Staff is highly guaranteed now obviously could still not happen but anet would have to have gone back to the drawing boards for it to not be.
What makes you think the staff skills exist in the first place?
Wait isn’t that right there in my post. Hello… is this thing on.
Just because a picture and a model was part of a datamine != staff skills exist. This is the same kind of deductive reasoning that has been used since thief staff became a thing.
Concept art is posted > OMG STAFF CONFIRMED
Entirely new class gets staff as a base weapon > OMG MULTIPLE CLASSES GETTING SAME WEAPON > OMG STAFF CONFIRMED
Its borderline kittened.
Sooo… is this still pragmatism or are you salty now?
I am fairly confident that because druid demands a staff weapon to coincide with the theme that staff for thief won’t be a thing.
Do people still believe this reasoning???
So looking at the other races, I’m sad to say that the charr seem to have the worst animations for the readper greatsword auto-attack. The other humanoid races (Human, Norn, Sylvari) all look very fluid performing the chain, which is nice, but also emphasizes the point that charr just look really bad. Asura don’t look that good either, but not to the degree that the charr suffer.
Again, I know balancing is priority, but please have a look at this and consider revamping the charr reaper greatsword auto-attack animation, Anet. It’s hard to get immersed in the profession when the chain attack just looks so… sloppy (I’d even say it looks glitchy, in fact).
After playing revenant in the beta, I think a skill like their sword #3 (Unrelenting Assault!) would make a great melee staff skill, especially because of the shadowstep play.
For those that don’t know what it looks like, the player basically jumps to their foe, then ports around them with a flurry of rapid strikes. Very flashy move and fun to use.
except its already on sword….
Sort of, but Pistol Whip has a long wind up and you pretty much have to have your opponent standing still for you unless you can root them long enough. It definitely has it’s uses, and is one of my favorite moves to use in PvE and dungeons. That said, however, a staff skill like Unrelenting Assault could function differently. Maybe it could have a bit of a distance closer, like a 450 initial jump or something. It doesn’t have to stun the enemy like Pistol Whip does either. Rather, maybe each strike can add a stack of vulnerability or something.
I’m just going off the top of my head here, but I’m confident it’s entirely possible to make melee staff a fun and unique weapon, even if there are some similarities to other weapons, but one can say that about a lot of existing weapon sets.
Either way, I’m sure whatever Anet has planned is already set in stone, so we’ll just have to see what actually happens. Here’s hoping we finally find out this week!

Okay, so I know that beta tests are primarily for the purpose of gathering feedback from the players. My concern is this: is Anet only interested in feedback regarding balancing and functionality or will they be gauging visual/audio feedback as well?
Balance issues are most important, of that I’m well aware and I agree, but I do feel that there are some aesthetic issues that need to be addressed as well. The most prevalent one to me right now is the charr reaper’s greatsword auto-attack animation; it looks absolutely horrid, clunky, jerky, and just downright sloppy. I haven’t looked at it on the other races, but I intend to, and I’ll probably come back and post any comments I have about them afterwords. Another issue that I haven’t considered until someone else brought it up is the dragonhunter’s bow sounds; it recycles the same sounds as the regular bow despite being a magically infused weapon. On the flipside, I think the chronomancer’s audio and visuals are absolutely gorgeous, especially the wells. Really awesome to look at and listen to! Great theme overall!
Both of the issues I pointed out have their own threads in their respective sub-forums, but I thought I’d create a thread here for anyone else who has any feedback/suggestions regarding the visual and audio aspects of the beta.
Sure, I’ll get behind this. I find aesthetics to be an important element, and this is an interesting point. Admittedly I haven’t played much dragonhunter, but I did notice that they just recycled the same sounds as the regular bow, despite being heavily influenced by magic. It seems… off because of it.
We’ll see if devs finds this to be important enough to address before the official release. I have a similar problem with the charr reaper’s greatsword auto-attack animation. It’s very ugly and sloppy-looking.
Hopefully Anet is gauging more than just balancing feedback, but visual and audio feedback as well and will adjust these kinds of things accordingly.
I’m going to go ahead and bump this because I feel it needs to be addressed. I know mechanics and balancing are more important, but does anybody else feel the same way about how terrible the charr’s greatsword auto-attack looks?
For those that haven’t seen it yet, I suggest making a real quick beta charr reaper and see for yourself. It’s not pretty.
Greatsword
Aesthetically I’m really enjoying the greatsword. The (human female) animations are great, I love the way they look and I do feel like my character looks like they’re this scary heavy hitter. The skills don’t really seem to back this up though.
Unfortunately, the charr auto-attack animations are completely the opposite. They’re downright terrible and don’t evoke the “scary heavy hitter” that you described at all. I made a detailed post about the issue here.
I hope this is just because it’s in beta and their chain attack animations will get revamped later on. As it stands, I seriously can’t believe it looks this bad.
I was just about to make a thread asking for the same exact thing. The charr AA for greatsword looks downright abysmal. Not sure why the title specifies male charr though, since both genders have the exact same animations.
The way Anet described it gave me a totally different expectation for the weapon. I understand that it’s supposed to be slow, but I thought that there would be a new AA animation that reflected the idea of “slow but terrifying” (since that’s the theme of the reaper). Something like a delayed wind up, followed by a heavy thud with each swing of the sword would look really cool, especially given that Anet wants to capture the theme of some kind of horror slasher movie monster.
Instead… what we get is something that just looks… bad. They recycled the regular charr greatsword AA animation, but to adjust it to the 3/4 second cast time, they simply slowed down the frames. The result is an attack that, instead of feeling like you’re brutally hacking away your enemies with terrifying power, feels more like you’re gently brushing their hair. In addition, after each hit of the AA chain, the animation jerks horribly from one animation to the next with no follow-through after every swing. There’s absolutely no fluidity between each attack, so rather than looking like a smooth 3-attack combination, the AA looks like 3 totally separate animations haphazardly slapped together.
I understand that this is a beta, and beta tests are supposed to be to collect feedback. I hope that feedback includes not only mechanical gameplay elements, but aesthetic elements as well. The charr’s greatsword AA animation just looks incredibly awkward and doesn’t feel natural at all. It definitely doesn’t capture the element of horror that Anet wanted it to.
It’s just too sloppy to ignore (and I’ve tried to ignore it)… please have a look at this, Anet, and consider revamping the AA animations for the greatsword AA chain (mostly for charr, as I haven’t really looked at it on other races, but I will).
The references below are more along what I was expecting out of the greatsword AA animations: Slow and heavy, but devastatingly powerful (I don’t know why the preview icons are messed up, but if you click on them they’ll be fine). They’re in slow-motion, of course, but if adjusted to match the cast time, animations like these would be so much more satisfying to see out of the AA chain than what we have now. Also, one of the gifs is a scythe, I know, but I still like the animation for it.
(edited by Seabreeze.8437)
Umm, have you looked at charr reaper animations? The greatsword auto-attack in particular looks really choppy and awkward. Totally the opposite of what I thought it would look like.
There are some nice animations, to be sure, but I was actually going to make a thread asking if they plan on smoothing out some of the animations, especially the reaper greatsword auto-attack.
If staff turns out to be our new weapon (fingers crossed), I hope it comes with a really dynamic play style with more of a reliance on acrobatics, deft movement, and flurries of strikes rather than the go-to stealth/one-hit-backstab/do-or-die build that most thieves are known for.
I think a couple of their underwater spear skills would translate really nicely to a melee staff. Nine-tailed strike would give us a parry/counter skill and Shadow Assault would just look awesome!
That’s just my thoughts for staff anyways. I think it should be more of a flashy, martial fighting style. For those wanting more of a shadow mage theme, I feel like a scepter or focus would be a far better opportunity for that.
This beta test has got me thinking.
Since Heart of Thorns is introducing a new mechanic where projectiles bounce to multiple targets behind your primary target, I’m wondering if Ricochet could be worked to function in this way as well. After playing around with Dragonhunter, I feel like this could translate really nicely into a new form of Ricochet.
I’m not really as talkative as Roy or Karl, but I’ll see if I can show up now and then to answer the occasional polite question.
Politeness? Who has time for politeness?
I’m totally kidding, of course. As I’ve said before, I know Anet is always a bit hesitant to post on the forums, especially when the risk of being trampled by frustrated players is particularly great. I’m not demanding that Anet makes a response here. Rather, I simply hope that they are indeed checking out threads like this and gauging player feedback, which I’m fairly confident they’re doing just that. Y’know there’s good suggestions, not-so-good suggestions, and everything in between around these forums. Whatever gets the pot stirring and the ideas brewing is okay by me!
I know this is supposed to be a thread for suggesting human male hairstyles, but after seeing a few female examples, I would like to add a couple.
Could we get long, curly hair? And I mean curly, not just a little bit wavy or Shirley Temple ringlets. And instead of cutting it off around shoulder length, how about making it as long as about some of the norn female hairstyles. It’s not fair that the human females don’t get to have long, flowing hair.
The way I see it, the thread title is calling the most attention to the lackluster state that male human hairstyles are in, but I think any suggestions for humans are more than welcome. I love those curly hair ideas for females!
Also, I found some more afro hairstyles to add to the idea pool. I like the messy ones like the first image in particular, but I also think it’d be cool to get a ponytail-style fro like Usopp here in the last pic. I want to reiterate that we should get more styles of afros than the overly simplistic sphere-with-a-hair-texture-map one we currently have.
You guys are silly, don’t you know the teaser image is perma-stealthed.
With all the access to reveals as there are now, I don’t think it should be a problem. :p
I hope it’s this year. Obviously 2017 is a gross exaggeration, but I definitely feel that the information has been really slow-going. I mean, currently GW2 feels kind of… dead, as much as I’d hate to say it. There’s been nothing in the gem store in the way of sales or promotions for like, what, 45 days and counting? No character slot sales? No bank tab sales? No outfit sales? No hair kit or total makeover kit sales? No sales of any kind whatsoever?
I’m still playing, of course, but it’s weird going this long with literally NOTHING going on in all of Tyria. I suppose it could be attributed to Anet working on HoT, but that just seems like the go-to reason to explain anything at this point, as if they have absolutely no room for any other part of the game right now. Not even promotions in the store.
I dunno, I guess I’m just sort of ranting right now. Here’s hoping for a surprise thief elite spec reveal this weekend.
The only problem then, is that you effectively paywall the hell out of the improvements to the weaponset. And, honestly, at ~$50 for HoT, and an unknown amount of non-Specialization content … HoT’s already looking -arguably- a tad bit pricey.
I’d rather see improvements on current weapons/skills exist on their own, and let the HoT stuff be its own -good, but not necessary- thing
That’s a valid point, but I can’t really see Anet overhauling an entire skill bar for a weapon set unless they integrate it into an elite spec. I mean, I’m not against simply redoing the whole thing as baseline, but the people that actually like the current weapon skills may object to being forced to use a new skill set by picking up dual pistols. That’s why I think making it part of an elite spec is the best way to do it, that way the current skills would still be available for those that prefer it.
If we were getting an elite spec reveal on Friday, wouldn’t there be some kind of teaser image or announcement?
Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t get a teaser image.
Yeah, I really hope we get the thief elite this weekend. The melee staff hype for me is real.
I can’t stand the wait anymore, not just for this, but for really any kind of HoT news. It’s been so slow going that I feel like we aren’t going to see the expansion until 2017 if we’re lucky.
If we were getting an elite spec reveal on Friday, wouldn’t there be some kind of teaser image or announcement? Not sure how “confirmed” this is.
I’m not saying there won’t be a POI this weekend, but I don’t really think it’s going to be an elite spec reveal. I’d love to be surprised, though.
If anyone else wants to actually discussion aspects of ricochet and the future of p/p, I’ll be here, waiting to express my opinion as I see fit.
(raises hand)
I still want to discuss Ricochet and the future of dual pistols.
I’d also like to hear your opinion on my post at the top of this page (the #gunslingers4life one). I think it got kinda buried in the sudden flame war.
Oh, I’m always wanting to discuss the Pistols. The ideas thrown about in regards to replacing “bounce” with “pierce” could work, imho. (Although, as I’ve said before … you’d think the game’s “tricky” fighter could get away with bouncing bullets off of target “A” to hit “B” …)
Also, as far as making P/P it’s own set, I want to say Sir Vincent’s been on that crusade for a while, for both P/P and D/D. I can also get behind that idea, since all ANet’d have to do then would be to balance the two sets separately of other Thief weaponry.
Right on, thanks!
I definitely agree on your opinion of bounce vs pierce. Pierce would be an okay alternative, but speaking from an aesthetic point of view, I personally think bounce fits much better as thieves are—just like you said—the tricky class, and the idea of a trick-shooter is way past cool. It was a lot of fun sending bullets bouncing around a mob in PvE, combined with the Superior Sigil of Fire where an extra fiery explosion would pop out of nowhere! I felt like I was contributing so much more then compared to now. Since it’s a single-target weapon, I’ve only got my sigil to act as my AoE burst (at least for that weapon set, my alt/melee is S/P, which works great in PvE).
Also, I haven’t seen Sir Vincent since, like, the first page, lol. If he’s got some ideas for making a unique skill set for dual pistols, I’d be interested to read about them. As I mentioned before, I think making unique skill sets apply only to elite specs would be the best way to go about it. It’d make taking an elite even more significant, offering a totally different way to play an already existing weapon loadout.
while i’m not against the idea, I can’t see why people don’t just organize their inventory better? It’s fairly easy to do.
I agree. I just make an invisible bag for consumables and stuff. Works just fine for me.
If they do add a consumables bar though, I hope it can be toggled on/off, as I think it’d just clutter up the UI in my opinion.

But the only customization options they add are hair and faces. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for more hairstyles and faces, but what about racial features, as I mentioned earlier with charr horns and stuff like that? Over the course of the game’s life they’ve added very little in that department, like a couple of norn beards, but that’s about it.
Simply put… charr horns! More charr horns please!
Trying to create a tough-looking human warrior in GW right now…
(This also applies to our current hairstyle choices btw)
OMG +1 not only for the Guilty Gear Xrd gif, but also for how relevant this is to the topic. Seriously, this gif is hilariously true right down to the “destroyed” statement at the end.
Side note: I love how the victim is Potemkin, who is arguably the manliest dude on the roster (for sure the burliest). It really drives home the point. Nicely done.
I’d like to see more customization options added into the expansion and NOT make them restricted to makeover kits (even though we’d have to get them anyways if we want to edit our existing characters).
I’d also like to see much more racial options, like charr horns, asuran ears, etc. There’s a lot of really good ideas on the forums from charr horns that look like deer/elk antlers to sylvari males getting plant beards. It’d be disappointing to say the least if we don’t get any new customization options with the release of Heart of Thorns.
I’m going to get the expansion regardless, but I gotta admit, the painfully slow trickle of information we’ve been getting about the whole thing isn’t exactly reassuring. I sure hope there’s a lot that has yet to be announced.
