That’s the point mate. The same one all of us feel if we’ve been here a while- you know, those “loyal gamers who helped raise the game”. But uh, salt aside.
I used to play pistol/dagger power (sometimes I still do) on my Thief, but the problem is as others have stated every class can make a million mistakes. It takes the Thief one. On top of that, I ran off meta. Funny bit here (I run s/p, I run p/d, I run d/p condi. I do things you should never do), I was successful like the OP. Maybe not face pro players super often, but I know I was better than whatever maelstrom of players are coming my way now. Far, far superior. And HoT took all my practice, effort, memorization, and skill practice then tossed it out the window.
I can’t provide a build that is similar to whatever you may be running that is viable meta, but I can tell you what I did. I stopped aiming for viable, duelist, yada yada and went straight for my adored playstyle- Master Assassin. And it works, because I stopped caring about surviving and focused on killing. Shade, something on your build keeps you coming back to it again and again yes? Find it, focus it, don’t make your build revolve around it- make it your build.
Inb4 people laugh/ignore/don’t read my post. I’m used to it.
Maybe its not for solo, but its far more solo friendly. You can’t decap/cap a thing if the enemy team is capable of shutting down your entire team. I have won Strongholds when I should have lost them. I think the only change necessary is to disable the ability for players to heal npcs. Dumbest thing since peanut butter >.>
It feels off. On the one hand you do have Solo and Team queue, in the other its not the way you want.

TeamQ= Conqest
But at the same time, PvP has an lfg panel tab which means you could get enough friends that way. I personally favor it, IF it were just more tuned. Having games where I am the only one on my team to contribute to capture points (20 me, 0/0/0/0 rest of team) and the final score is 501 to 8 (defeat)… its just like “wtf anet…”.
So I think yes if and only if they can just fix this MMR bs that’s running around. If I’m the only good player on my team (proven btw, not ego) then the enemy team should only have 1 player at my skill level not 5. I can’t play against 5 me’s if my team is like 4 other me’s from 2 years ago when I barely understood why Capture points were better than kills.

Edit: Idea. What if you are so much better than your team (only one capable of contributing?), that win or lose you are awarded a pip. If you would lose a pip you do not. If you would gain a pip, you would gain 2. Yes, people might abuse this. But they will NEVER advance. Ever. It restrains itself to the concept of Elo checking. I am currently of the belief that making an individual ladder for team based gameplay is a BAD idea. It’s bad in LoL, its bad in Smite, it barely works in HoTs (because individual skill level contributes to boosting your teams stats). Why should it work here, in another situation of 5v5?

Not sure, but was told Ankle Shots is bugged. Pick top for group or mid for self. If you want instant burst, grab bot Adept trait and Scholar. For CS. Other two are standard.
If they finally nerfed shadowstep stomping then good. I support it 100%. Keep it that way.
Why? Makes no sense. It is a 50 sec CD and one of our only safe stomps. Even if you decide to use the SB 5 trick, it still requires at least a 20 sec CD (steal) to work. Balanced the way it was IMO.
What makes no sense is that something like this undermines the downed state, makes the whole downed skills useless, and takes away the risk of trying to stomp someone due to a long casting time.
All theses are in place to counter or delay a stomp, yet it’s being bypassed by shadowstep stompping.
The only acceptable “safe” stomp is faking it to bait the counter before actually stompping.
Better get rid of stab, blind, distortion, stealth, invuln, and impact strike then.
That won’t make sense nor reasonable because they are working as intended.
Shadowstep stompping is obviously not their intention, which they have expressed in the past when they nerfed Sword #2.
I think 3 years is a nice period to classify something as ‘working as intended.’
Thief has many issues that are 3yrs old and I doubt that is their intention.
List of Three Year old Thief problems:
Scorpion Wire still does not work properly.
No reason to pick Skelk Venom or Signet of Malice. Ever. Not unless for gimmick builds.
Dodging after firing Shortbow 5, but before it lands results in losing dodge distance.
Valid Pathing is allowed/disallowed at a millimeter.
Shortbow 5 eats all your initiative on a failed teleport.
Most Signet active effects are undesirable.
Thief Guild still needs its cooldown reduced or its effectiveness improved (rampage, lich, plague, etc).
Wait, I should stop right? I mean I can go for days…
In that case, I’d need to know your build. Whenever I start a build, I choose between Infiltration, Scholar, and Eagle depending on where I want to focus my damage. From there I look for similar rune stat categories to see if anything else works. =)
I don’t want them deleted. But I do think key elements should be reconsidered. Chill should do 30% less damage, and regain its functionality as an execution (doing its current damage if you are below 50% hp) on Reaper. DH traps should not daze, anything but a CC effect on a trap as there is a bug if you are walking and take your hand off the keyboard while moving and after being dazed you will get forcibly moved forward. Scrapper should not give you the finger while dishing its damage, especially that MUCH damage. Chrono is actually fine, Tempest is fine, Daredevil is fine (but Core Thief needs some love). Berserker needs help. Revenant/Herald need some heavy handed nerfs atm. Druid isn’t broken, just annoying. I can play around EVERYTHING on ANYONE except for Reaper, Scrapper, Rev, Herald, and DH. If they know what they are doing they just rough me up and throw me into the junkpile. Very agitating.

I’m confused how? So far things just die after my first combo, which was the goal. Should I change topic title? I’m trying to make an assassination build. Combo is basically
400 range dodge+1200 range steal proccing so many random proccy thingies, followed by pistol whip. Estimated time of combo finishing is before the fury wears off.
@Agemnon- Retal knocks me into 75% range pretty often. Are you sure on Eagle? I was swapping back and forth and I set on Evasion because it gives fury (for 3 seconds, if the fight lasts longer than that… well then its a fight over an assassination) and does between 600 and 1000 damage on my bound dodge which does between 2 and 5k with a chance to proc air or fire, which makes for a very nuclear combo (evasion rune damage proc, bound damage proc, mug damage proc, possible air or fire, possible pulmonary). Along with the cripple, it sets chaining pistol whip very nicely as many players won’t process the cripple and will just try to do something like strike back.
Is dropping my basic guarantee into a combo that does between 9000 and 23000 (crits, procs, etc) for eagle runes worthwhile? I’m more than willing to swap ofc, I just wanted to explain the reasoning. I’m trying to train myself to go full glass and literally evade all incoming damage through “mad jukes max esl pro league reaction … stuff… idk how far that meme goes” which is why I have no defense.

No but I will get them to at least 50% causing panic strike, followed by them using something to respond giving me another interrupt from pistol whip. Then they die =).

Usually works. And some people actually believe it (until 30 seconds in once we make first contact and they see a bunch of dead guys near me).
I’m going to ignore thief class, as I am biased in that- so basically I am voting was difficult, annoying or just impossible to fight. (1 hard, 8 easy)
1)Engineer/Scrapper- I have dubbed thee 24/7 block all attacks while damaging me harder than my auto attacks because of a dodge trait in explosives.
2) Meta Mallyx Revenant- Impossible to cleanse perma conditions, even if its light dosage its permanent light dosage. I can’t cleanse that fast without burning utilities, dodges, and initiative (which means I am not engaging).
3) Dragonhunter (guardian I can fight)- Daze, daze, daze ,daze , DAZE DAZE DAZE. =( I can kill you, you lousy blighters. Just stop STUNNING ME ACROSS THE MOUTH. fuming agitation
4) Reaper- either cancer 4 lyfe or burst you in one or two hits. “Burst”. =/ I can’t hit 12k on any of my skills, but its k you get a skill with 100% cooldown reduction that repeatedly hits me 9-12k if I’m below 50%. Just dodge? Funny, I forgot that Weakness got its endurance destroyer debuff removed >.>
5) Druid- not hard to survive against, more like by the time I finally kill you the match is probably bloody over. Heals don’t deserve feels, no matter what people tell you. They deserve aggravation and rampage.
6) Tempest- its like a slow bleed to death or a fast delete click. No in between. And unfortunately, I get 0 indicators of which. So I basically engage you with maximum cautious or drop all my init, util, traits, etc and pray I can kill you before you get a chance to fight back.
7) Chronomancer- Surprisingly few are ever seen. But that uh, that burn on block trait huh? Still… running… GOSH DANG IT. K thx bai.
8) Berserker- I kinda just don’t know what to do with you. I usually try to full burst you before something like endure pain on your trait procs. Then I stealth and wait. Then again, endure pain. And now you are 50%… okay finally yeesh. Dead. Took what, a minute?
So after I played seriously, saw all that before me, I changed to just my BTFOT build. And now I only hate condi reaper and on rare occasions Dragonhunter. Otherwise I just yolo bomb you and disappear, wait 9 seconds- yolo bomb, repeat.
I’m not mad, I just want to know whats going on. I’d love to get in a discussion, a very civil and polite discussion. I made jokes about dev located when I saw one. Tried to ask em about the steal nerf (now reverted) but they disappeared. I have emote chat turned off so idk if maybe something devolved or not =(. Anet guys, you there? Well I don’t actually have a lot of time =(. Am on a lot, but I’m usually afk doing something else. My success though is lost my first 9 (4 of which were intentional), won 6, dc’d because life got busy on 1. =) So ye, its fine. Painful and annoying though.
I swapped Scholar for Evasion. Steal does 1.5k, bound does 1.6-3.2, rune does around 800 then with a chance of air/fire/pulm. Wondering if I can one shot with that >.>
Well if you want a giggle, play air/fire sigil and air rune. The burst engage is pretty funny. Its not viable, but it makes for a good laugh.
Thoughts? Suggestions? I know we can’t duel, so I’m trying to maximize my engage burst.
Before you ask, I use tripwire on those annoying friggin chronomancers and heralds. Make me feisty, decided I’d gun em down first.

I’m fighting DH on my swordpistol Thief XD. Its upsetting and annoying, but I’m getting there. Which means you can Mr.Reaper.
Vortex=Dragon maw and Procession of blade with Focus 5 during a Judge’s Intervention, more than likely combo’d with Whirl of Wrath and Smite (or Litany of Wrath+Whirl of Wrath+smite). Its a very bursty combo. That or… I have no clue. But I run it =)

I’d personally prefer much smaller WvW style maps. Each map, each player gets one life. There are several defensive npcs (healers, defenders, archers) who will rez you when down. But I like Team Deathmatch more than King of the Hill, Conquest, or MoBa.
I play Thief. Seeing several mechanics that deny me playing Thief at all (Dragonhunter’s shield thing that just says no to all incoming attacks instead of projectiles like the tooltip says?) is very frustrating. I get around it by going onto a real class or by just going full glass and slamming my face into my keyboard hopefully. Drastic that Warrior is basically deleted from the game, and everyone is forced to click Necro/Engi/Ele/Rev/Ranger. Anything else hampers you. Dragonhunter is just a nuisance, Thief is basically gone, Warrior is gone, Mesmer’s are hard to find.
I’d say all the bugs (obvious ones too) running rampant is funnier.
