10/10 would read again. But remember, Chef Anet loves Thief. That’s why they let us retain our bread. Our tears at the table made them realize some of us really enjoyed our sandwich once upon a time. They just refuse to invest in it, seeing as their previous choices have caused an outward exodus in the restaurant a few times.

Great story though. I bet this gets deleted or I get infracted. At this point though, they have to know. But Chef Anet refuses to speak, invest time, to listen, to adjust. I miss Anet on release and during Revenant and during Beta. They talked to us and listened, especially Sous-Chef Karl. Where have they gone =(?

If you run improv, stealing runs the chance of resetting your palm strike and either giving you the cd or just throwing it completely on cd. But it ends the skill. So don’t steal with Improvisation traited, lesson to learn. Does nothing to takedown though >.> kitten?

It does not make sense. You could theoretically murder someone without breaking stealth otherwise. But we already do that.

I want to do raids on my Thief (I probably won’t be properly geared, but hey- I’m getting close only 1k gold… >.> no idea how to get it). What I’m seeing though as well as hearing is, Thief will have no legitimate place in raid content. Which means I’m totally busted. Problem is, Thief is my only class properly geared and invested in.

1) Should I keep trucking with Thief? If so, any idea on the raid build? Is it another venom share thing?

2) Should I not keep going with Thief? Who should I roll? Where do I donate my tears?

Legitimately concerned. Hoping to get advice from you guys…

I tried it. We lost once, but we swapped DH for a Thief (woops) during Spirit Watch iirc. Not sure. But ye, most games we were 50-150 points up (out of 4 I think). It’s easy to win it on Nif/Khy/Foe. Other maps are tosses to win, you just gotta be good. That or the two beginner DH players netted terrible results?

Besides rolling a DH/Reaper/Scrapper/Druid/Glint?

Just play pistol/pistol shortbow. If they are playing staff bound, then time your headshot to when Vault opens up and remember your Dash is longer than Bound by enough not to take damage. Most Thief players take a lot of time to recover from getting headshot during vault (guess they don’t believe its possible). If they do 3 vaults, they are outta initiative. Assuming skilled? They will pre-queue weakening Strike before tapping Steal (otherwise you go through target), the second you see it Steal into their Steal or just dash. It’s very easy stuff.

If its the condi lolz- one dodge on their second DB or LB will nullify all the conditions or most. It will also put you far out of range.

I always say this to my friends in game, but I can say it on forums a lot too- winning a duel is about calculating advantage. Did they burn 2 dodges? Cool, what did you trade? Did they blast cooldowns/lots of initiative? Great, what did you trade? Personally, I have found the most success on Pistol/Pistol+Shortbow. I can roam, vaporize squishies (wire-fist or steal-takedown), and with a great deal of focus shut down a considerable amount of specs. Still sucks that I can outplay so hard, then swap to my Reaper and go to autopilot for the same result. =/

Warrior needs a full revamp/rework. Thief needs an update/rework. Our traits are disorganized like yours, and we aren’t just pigeonholed- we are decreed. Any non-trickery Thief build will fail. No question. Playing without a third of your class active is just nasty. =/ Collaborative Development Initiative Time.

To be fair, D/d condi is VERY easy to outplay. A short dash out and you waste more init/evade/util/cooldowns than I. Advantage wins duels, and all of D/d condi advantage is frontloaded. If I just evade you a bit then you are far weaker than me, and I can murder you with serious impunity. It’s strong against melee and unobservant players, but a smart or ranged player will make you burn your advantages earlier.

Edit before I forget: I play pistols, I love them, they are my choice even when they dropped outta meta I had an alt holding my pistols. That way you get why I have no trouble.

But the evade is on the start, so when the thief flips you can blind/block/interrupt/KILL. I mean, you probably don’t know this but Thief dies to stiff breeze.

On the bright side, negligence breeds comedy. Scorp wire is mad bugged. =) Meant to post earlier, but life got in the way. Pulled shenanigans in Stronghold where I’d pull a guy from across the mid point supply circle, then he’d get launched by the end animation straight in the air. Oh, impractical hilarity…. I love thee. Hoping to repeat this later, but it happened 3 times in one match.

If you are looking for duel power, the mages are currently the easiest to memorize and emulate. They are still difficult and have a very decent skill ceiling, but unlike having to learn all your kits/toolbelts or pets/util combos- you can just memorize skill combos as a start. Bar to enter is lower. HOWEVER- a good engi (especially a good scrapper) will muder anything it sets eyes on. Same on Ranger, however Ranger fights at higher skill tiers is much more in depth. Less skills, but more forethought.

Basically, bar to enter is lower on mages and higher on mediums (idk heavies, I’m not a fan of any of them tbh) but skill ceiling is also lower on mages and higher on mediums. You notice a very big difference between a good thief/engi/ranger as opposed to a good mes/ele/necro when they fight worse players.

The new finisher only takes as long until you know your damage. A little thing I kept from all the pvp games I play- the only thing scarier than a competent player, is one that knows when they can kill you with little counterplay left to you. Memorize TD combo’s damage and FF/PS. If you can’t land them, either use em after Panic Strike or Devourer Venom.

That adds so much power. I trying to figure out how to recreate it, but so far standing on the same elevation as your target and having them dip just below yours (range 100-120?) causes them to launch past pistol range above the dip that they slam. So for context:

You know the spot in Stronghold where you pick up supply and run it to your base, the big “mid”? If you scorpion wire someone on the other side of the pit properly (I got it to work only three times) making sure you are both on the ledge, when they slam at your feet they will skyrocket into the air giving you the added bonus of a 1000+range launch STRAIGHT into the air.

Oh my god, devs- don’t fix this. This is fantastic. >.> I gotta see if I can make it more consistent. But oh baby this is funny. So far, works on fellow Thief players and one Mesmer. Hoping to have time to test this again soon. =D Scorp wire, the skill so bugged it gains value from being broken.

OH and the value besides when it works it gives a 1200 range pull (I’m figuring out how to make it work despite bugs when I play now, mentally taking notes): If you need to gain distance on a Mesmer, throw the wire. It tends to only trip them BUT sends you around 240-300 range away. Best get away ever. Need to flip a Necro’s Breaker or get a DH off the trap by making em mad? Throw a wire. Wanna trip someone running away or possibly displace them? Throw a wire. Tired of those plebs hiding behind thin walls when you shoot projectiles? No more, throw a wire. =D This thing is at its prime, I am advising its use.

Thief: The only profession where you wish you had tried to beat Darksouls 2 with Toothpick and no armor over trying to 1v1 most classes.

Or you can build for 1v1 and stop going meta <3. But ye, Thief needs help. Daredevil is beautiful and makes us viable beyond a dream, but Thief is bad. Trickery is taken for the Master Minor trait (I’d love it to be baseline, this will be in all my posts to follow. I advise you all to put “make preparedness baseline” in your sigs), Crit strikes is actually very bad with a few traits taken for specific weapon skills over actual usefulness (Hidden Killer only for daggers…ok…), DA is mixed identity, Acro is just bad, and SA feels almost right. So DD and SA are fantastic lines, with Trickery being mandatory unless you wanna lose the aforementioned toothpick.

Any suggestions for change? Also, why Staff over d/p? You can go SA/TR/DD and get an amazingly high amount of survivability+burst. Honestly just very, very curios- DP still seems like the go to weapon set even with the new traitline.

Edit: I see a d/p build. Probably asked too soon. I guess a better question is which would be better- staff or DP?

Dash+steal cd+ initiative signet cd+ shadowstep+scorpion Wire. I played D/D and always landed, granted it was gimmicky. But I skirmished with the best of em. Got bored, played p/p. I missed my guns. I feel like Jinx from League of Legends cinematic trailer- shoot everything really fast =D. Shoot ALL the things =D Totally random.

Adept Minor: Stealing restores 4 initiative.
Master Minor: Stealing heals you and applies damage, does not crit (mug).
Grandmaster Minor: Spending Initiative raises damage per initiative (same as lead in reverse) buff per initiative lasts 2 seconds.
Adept Master 1: Thrill of the Crime.
Adept Master 2: Flanking Strikes, cooldown down to 30 seconds buff durations down to 4s.
Adept Master 3: Gaining a boon grants 1 initiative, 1 second cooldown.
Master Major 1: Bountiful Theft.
Master Major 2: Trick cooldown reduced by 20 seconds, removes 2 conditions, and grants fury (yes, I copied Ranger’s survival trait).
Master Major 3: Inflicting a condition restores 1 initiative, 1 second cooldown.
Grandmaster Major 1: Sleight of hand also resets a utility skill cooldown (not work on elite or heal, just utility).
Grandmaster Major 2: Upper hand (also now reduces weapon swap cooldown by 20%).
Grandmaster Major 3: Restoring 1% of your hp restores 1 initiative.

Uncatchable, Pressure Strike, and Bewildering Ambush moved to DA. DA focused to condi. Preparedness made baseline, Lead attacks removed and all weapon skills given 7.5% more damage. … I got bored and wanted to post that XD

I get what you are saying, but wouldn’t it make sense to be swapped with something more focused on initiation then over something that discourages skill use? I don’t know, like entering a fight procs a mini Assassin’s signet- your next 3 attacks do 15% more? Or perhaps your first attack from out of combat (like Warrior’s Berserker Fury trait in Arms) does 30% more, kinda reincarnate the terror of Backstab again? I don’t know, its just an overall bad trait no matter how you try to sell it back. Each % applies a vuln theoretically? Great, why doesn’t it affect condi? And why would I willingly remove Vuln from them?

Like how no one argued preparedness, anet do it. Preparedness baseline.

I’m not saying delete. I’m saying move. Somewhere makes more sense. I’d personally like DA to just go full condi, its most of the way there already. Daggers go poison, steals go poison, poison goes weakness, root on 50% hp, poison does more damage, traps do vuln, trap for poison stuff on heal. Improv to Trickery, Bewildering in its place. Mug merged to Thrill of Crime or Bountiful Theft, replaced with Uncatchable. Pressure Striking on 20% more damage for execution and that moved to CS? Hidden Killer only gets used for Backstab, make Backstab critical chance 100% and replace HK with Exec? Like, so much is out of place. I hope people 100% read my wall of text this time…I’m saying exactly what my wall says >.>

Edit: Gonna show it for you. Cuz I barely got what I typed, which means I probably confused you and several other people if I can barely understand myself o.O

DA- The minors: Stealing applies poisonX2, downed applies poisonX1. Poison applies Weakness. New GM minor- Increase condi dmg to weakened foes by 10%. Apply that 10% dps elsewhere, possibly just baseline it because to be fair, the sets need it. Really badly. The Adept Majors: Dagger abilities will apply poison (remove rng), Uncatchable trait, Heal applies Needle Trap. The Master Majors: Master Trapper thing, root when target drop belows 50% hp (no longer need to hit, condi works too. condi line op), Pressure Striking. New GMs: Poison does more damage, Bewildering Ambush, applying weakness applies burningX2 (icd).

Trickery: Minors are: Stealing gives initiative, taking damage grants initiative, killing a foe restores 3 initiative. Adept Majors: Mug, Thrill of the Crime, some alternate amazing non-garbage version of pressure striking. Master Majors: Bountiful, Trickster thing, Improvisation. GrandMaster Majors: Quick Pockets (buffed), Sleight of Hand, Dropping below 50% hp restores all initiative.

Executioner replaces Hidden Killer, no changes to CS as of yet. Well, I mean Ankle Shots becoming Ricochet =P but thats it.

Berserker setup. Not sure if for pvp, so I just set it for pvp stats. I hope its pve, you are trying for a bit too much there. Venoms are good with power because the siphon damage scales on power (and hits per venom) so you get loads of free damage, but are also good with condition damage because they dump condis. You won’t be able to stack much might for your team to be fair, Thief is not made for support despite dev attempt to sell it so. Max to expect is 11/12/13 (pack runes, Thrill of crime, managing to steal a might). I just gave you highest burst comp for it.

Yes but I said inversely. Think about it like old Mantras. You were punished for using Mantra’s because you gained damage for accumulating them and lost damage for using them.

Likewise, we accumulate damage for NOT spending initiative (our very class mechanic over just some silly skill) and lose it for playing the game logically i.e. spending initiative. That’s how we lose damage. This trait singularly discourages using your 2-5 abilities because you lose damage.

Trickery. Gonna nitpick, I’m bored, this is constructive. Time to pick one thing every day/week/whenever to say its bad.

So Trickery- it has a trait that literally makes our class function. It’s basically like playing Guardian with only two virtues or Warrior with 2 bars of adrenaline, or Necro with 2/3 a shroud. You get it. Preparedness needs to be baseline. Also, wtf is Lead Attacks? It encourages the player to NOT spend initiative and punishes you for doing so in an inverse manner. Hey Mr Mesmer, I know you need your spells to be effective, but we’ll start deducting damage for doing so. Just stick to your autos. No really, we will take your damage away. Also, why is Bewildering Ambush here and not Mug? Please elaborate. Same thing for that Pressure Striking and Uncatchable. This line is CLEARLY for steal and initiative, but then you add condi application and stuff. No, does not fit. Move it.

Preparedness being baseline uncripples the class and CREATES build diversity. Taking Lead Attacks away and just applying 7.5% (the perfect median of 1-15%) flat damage to all Thief abilities/utilities makes sense. Preparedness becomes: taking damage bestows Initiative. Voila, same idea, more intuitive, less required. Lead Attacks… I just don’t know. Killing a foe restores 3 init? I just.. I’m lost. This is like some of those Mesmer traits (that Mantra one iirc, from pre June 23rd).

Edit: And another thing. Flanking Strikes has two problems. One, same name as sword 3. Yep. Same name with an added S. Also, this trait is singularly outdone by a sigil. Why does no one take this trait I wonder? OH! Cuz a sigil makes this thing a chump. “But if gives fury” Ye, so does CS. You want Fury, go CS. You want quickness, just take the kitten sigil. This trait is utter garbage. It never is going to stunbreak you. Ever. It takes effect on your hit, not theirs. With how much time I spend on the board, I’m surprised I’m labelled as >10 hours a week. Also, like Zero said if the .0001% is so good they get top play, they can adapt to a meta of massive change- no? If not, then they aren’t good, they just found ONE spec that works. Which is toxic.

Also- D/p is better than S/d. Sorry to bust the bubble. Dagger auto applies faster and does higher spike. Dagger auto chains are more reliable, can be filled easily without losing pressure and more simple in execution. D/p has higher burst. D/p has higher control. D/p has higher pressure. S/d auto chain is low, it is taken specifically for boon and condi heavy metas when and only when it is strong. Right now (despite this being the perfect meta), it is far too weak to take the mantle. It wouldn’t take much to fix it, but PTSD of players denies the possibility.
