It would be a shame not to add Cantha. Please use this thread as the proof you need to bring it back.

Thank you for sharing this, it’s a true piece of art & greatly appreciated as such, and for it’s aid to our cause.

Yeah, the slums are hopefully significantly reduced and a lot more Canthan’s are hopefully doing much better for themselves these days. I hope that they keep that very ancient Asia, and traditional feeling/atmosphere but there’s bound to be some changes somewhere too. Maybe in Kaineng itself, they could keep the upper levels of the city where people congregated the same or very similar, but where the slums used to be it could be totally revamped to be much cleaner and far less suffering & peasants. The isolation should work for their benefit imo..It would be nice to see an iconic and huge place from the 1st game and the lore being mostly in tact and doing well for itself for once, since everywhere else seems to be overrun with doom & gloom so far….

Also, venturing outside of Kaineng City…I would love to see the mountains and valley’s again, the small villages, temples….and maybe even new places in Cantha that we never got to see, or didn’t know ‘existed’ before….There’s so many possibilities that air on the more positive side that are very worth looking into….Of course, everyone has their conflicts and their pressing matters..So seeing what they do story wise is intriguing as well.

When it comes to Elona, I agree we need to go there as well. My only worry has been that it would be too similar to the Orr experience with the whole undead hordes and mass destruction of death and doom. I feel like that theme has exhausted itself a bit.

I posted this about several pages back, but I think what we want to see of Cantha is less poverty stricken and more culturally accurate, like an Asian Divinity’s Reach; with falling petals, people travelling in and out of the city, playful children, shops, mansions, and the usual city hustles. Yeah, I think Cantha could capture the hustle & bustle of both urban, and populous farming and trading cities. It could all be so amazing with this engine, btw that music is really nice

A member of our very own community made a song “A Dream of Cantha” for our community several pages back, you should check it out here.

I’m not too worried about the undead in Elona – in GW1 they were a more ancient breed of dead, and were also quite self-aware. Plus, Palawa Joko is a king and a much more “involved” ruler than Zhaitan is. He has a kingdom, after all. If Elona comes around, I see us facing a more organized version of the undead. Also, mummies.

I would be kinda disappointed if Kaineng’s slums were gone. They weren’t a pleasant place, but they were not meant to be. It’s a dense, urban environment unlike anything else in GW. It would be interesting if some of the maps were stacked on top of each other – we could have the skeevy criminal underworld at the sewer level, the poor above, and the wealthy at the very top.
I would love to see Shing Jea preserved in its former, serene state; an island monastery for young heroes to train in, and as a landing point for foreigners to bypass the security of the mainland.

I know, I’m just saying anything to do specifically with undead may feel exhausted right now, that is just my opinion on the one aspect though. I really want to get back there too because there would be so much to do and see, and story wise it could be fantastic.

I think they/we can still have the criminal underworld, and the dense urban environment all over Kaineng City (and maybe some other locations) but it doesn’t have to be overrun with slums to do that. The idea of reducing the poverty/slums comes from not wanting to be offensive or totally insensitive to any situations in the real world that it could be compared to. (I know, that sucks, it’s part of the discussion with Josh Foreman several pages back). But if it comes down to losing the poverty/slums, or not having Cantha at all then I’d rather do away with the slums/poverty lol. And from a lore perspective it draws from the fact that the last we knew, the Ministry of Purity went on a crusade of sorts to reduce crime and poverty all around. Where it went about 50 years after GW1 is a mystery though.

Official explanation for temporary content?

We’re trying something very unique and different with Gw2, and a lot of it plays back on the original ideas and concepts we had for the game all these years we’re trying to build towards and accomplish. It’s important to us to continue to try new things, looking at ways of evolving and innovating what a live game can be. In many cases, we’re learning right along with you guys how all of this is going to work for a live game, and constantly adjusting as we see the outcomes and find ways to innovate on what a true online world experience can be.

Living World is above all, the attempt to really give the sense the world is constantly changing and evolving. That there is events and content that change the world in the short term (like our current events) and events that can occur or change for the long term, which is what we’re slowly building towards in the future with Living World content.

Living world absolutely does not mean nothing but content that comes in and leaves again a few weeks later, and though so far that’s primarily what you’ve seen, it’s not all we will do in the future. The intent is living world provides us with a story and narrative experience, sort of like your favorite TV show, to constantly update and change the world and provide unique and exciting rewards on a regular basis.

We might have events that occur and came back again with a few modifications in the future. We may have events that occur and then find new homes permanently down the road. We may have bosses from a storyline that continue on forever as guild bounty hunts when a story completes. Living world also allows us the opportunity to upgrade and make parts of our existing game better permanently, a living world narrative could allow us to rebuild and change an existing zone or dungeon, or could destroy one entirely.

Our goal is to get to a point where on a regular basis, the world around you is not only changing in the short term through our normal event system, it’s changing and evolving permanently through our living world releases as well. What you’ve seen so far is primarily some tests and warmup stuff while we in the background organize the company to support this exciting future for our game, the future for living world is filled with endless possibilities.

Enjoy the ride!

As it should be, thank you! Static worlds are boring! Now, Colin….Cantha…:) lol (CLICK MY SIGNATURE!@!!!)

People are completely missing the point of this thread…

I don’t think anyone is arguing that the things in the gem store aren’t good… the issue is that ALL the new content is only attainable through the gem store… which would be absolutely fine if this was a f2p game… but we paid $60 for this game (and some people paid even more for the collectors edition) only to be locked out of all the new additions

This very much seems like the case of having your cake and eating it too for ANet… they want to charge people for the game but also use the f2p business model by reserving any sort of desirable new content for the gem store

Either charge people for the game but then add items that could be just as easily attained just by playing the game or just make this f2p and be kings of the cash shop

???? New content has nothing to do with the gem store, and never has? There are things added to the gem store like clothing items and pets and stuff but content is never through the gem store.

Thee’s a huge thread (you can find it in my signature) about the potential future of other continents/regions in the game. The topic is primarily the fact that Cantha may or may not ever be part of GW2, there’s several dev responses in the thread but we also discuss other places as well such as Elona, Isles of Janthir, etc. A lot of people want to go back to original regions from GW1, and places that are more exotic than what we are currently experiencing.

New non-cash shop armor sets? When?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shanna.4762

Shanna.4762

It’s time they began adding both gem shop armor skins, and new non-shop skins, tbh. I am amazed that they haven’t added new skins to the shop outside of town clothes. I dont buy town clothes, I don’t care about town clothes, I don’t care about costume brawls, I don’t want to costume brawl and I don’t really know all that many players who give a crap about any content that’s exclusive to town clothing. We’d rather have armor skins! For all the resources they put into town clothes, it would be better spent on designing gem-shop armor skins, and new dungeon skin options.

For any MMO that has a cash shop, armor skins are a huge selling point. I like to collect skins from shops that I like in games I play for a long period of time, they have lost a lot of potential cash by going 8 months without new armor skins we can purchase. They talked about it pre-launch, and it really is just baffling they haven’t added any new ones since the games launch.

When it comes to in-game/non-shop armor skins…I think we’re about due for a new series of sets with a new permanent dungeon. Hopefully once this living story wraps up, and the next update comes by the end of May?

A few of the classes in GW2 are hybrids of others from the 1st game, and turned into “new” classes for this one. I wish they had gone the assassin route with the thief, myself…but oh well lol. Definitely want the Ritualist back, and if they do that they need to bring it with Cantha!

Even if Cantha does not return I hope they bring forth some Cantha inspired gear.

Canthan inspired gear would also be very welcome. With the impending release of the game in China, this is a perfect opportunity for such a thing. So far, the most oriental themed looking outfit is the T3 human cultural (medium) armor set. But according to ArenaNet, there is going to be new armor and weapon skins for China’s release, so hopefully we will get those too.

I think that, ultimately, people want this game (GW2) & World (Tyria) to feel like the same world as the 1st game, and feel like the sequel it’s supposed to be by bringing us to the places we love. Yes, new places are massively important as well…But I honestly don’t think that it’s more important than going back to the major places from the 1st game. They can do both, and honestly they are in desperate need of regions that are very, very, very much intact with how they used to be. Cantha is perfect for this, as it’s an ancient region/culture/empire that has seemingly stood the test of time and many other things. It would make the most sense for that than Elona, which would most likely dramatically different than it used to be and we already have that with almost every part of the current game, and it would likely feel far too similar to the story of Orr if they still go with the last thing we knew happened there..Which is also okay, because I suppose they could preserve parts of Elona and change other parts, but over all they really do need a much more present sense of continuity than they currently have.

Cantha, it’s just so much a part of the mythos and lore of Guild Wars as a franchise that has almost no worthwhile reason to be changed too much, and it’s such a work of art. Going back to such an ancient and deeply rich, vibrant, and familiar place where the only changes may be an improved quality of life, and then some other more minor things but mostly maintains very recognizable and fully functioning locations, and could even have new locations in the regions that were wide open valley’s and such…I dunno there’s just so much potential there, and it could satiate the appetite for both new and old. Imagine a town built along the mountains, the villages that have maybe only slightly grown and developed, new towns that never existed before…Maybe regions of Cantha that were never even in the first game…

Also, yeah…Utopia sounded amazing and I would LOVE them to go there with this game at some point as well if they could. That Aztech theme would be pretty exciting

Too bad judging by the 25 minutes leaked footage that game is heading toward a SW:TOR leveling of disaster.

I can’t get over the fact they’re perfectly willing to go with the Asian thing for their releases in Asia, but for still think it makes sense to not add more Canthan content to GW2? And if Oriental art was ever a problem, they’re able to give them exclusive armor skins (probably gem store, or something), and other Asian influenced in-game stuff but we can’t have it? What about everyone in NA/EU that are Asian? I get doing it when you’re going to launch in the region, but I don’t get leaving the rest of us out of it & not using Cantha as the launching pad for those things. I’m not saying they should wait for a Cantha expansion, but they could do an update that adds more stuff relating to Cantha in general…I just don’t get it, and honestly it makes me angry towards them.

Well, this was just posted on MMOculture today, ArenaNet is finally getting ready to launch GW2 in China. Apparently, Colin said they plan to support the Chinese version with additional Chinese/Oriental themed art, armor, weapons, and other things.

MMOculture article

While I absolutely think this is awesome news, it actually frustrates me even more that we have no word on Cantha, and that for some dumb unknown reason they’ve decided to basically gut Cantha out of the game for the time being, when all along they could have kept it a part of GW2 and saved a great deal of hassle and disappointment all around.

If ArenaNet already intended to give the Asian releases of the games additional oriental themed stuff, then why in the world did they slash most Canthan references and locations (such as Divinity’s Reach Canthan District, and various NPC’s etc.) It really doesn’t make any sense whatsoever at this point, considering that Canthan content is the perfect marketing point for the Asian releases. Now I’m mad.

Take care !

O.o I see another musician. All the cookies sir! All the cookies. XD

Ah, you guys are so talented! Please keep inspiring our movement with epic themes to march to!

I was running around Divinnity’s Reach the other day and heard the dialogue that goes something like this:

“It’s so hard to find good Canthan cuisine anymore.”
“What do you expect? After 100 years without trade, it’s hard to keep things authentic.”
“My grandma used to make the best red bean cakes. I’d kill for one of those. I bet you think I’m joking.”
“I hear the, uh, Commons has some… I’d show but I…have to be…somewhere else! NOW. Good day!”

Yes. Cantha is just that important.

Yup! I like hearing random banter from NPC’s about Cantha. The temple area with the Canthan scholar and random Canthan people walking around makes me depressed lol

Almost exclusively, about 90%. Kurzick’s and Luxon’s were inspired by Russia & China, at least it mostly seems to resemble a mix of the two, which is probably drawn from the fact that the eastern/southern most part of Russia in the Imperial era were heavily influenced by China due to being so close by.

Of course the Kurzick were inspired on the eastern part of Russia. That is because House zu Heltzer, House Vasburg, House Brauer, House Lutgardis and House Durheim really sound like Russian…

And between the Echovald Forest (where “wald” means forest in German) and the Crystal Sea, I believe they take about 40% of Cantha’s map.

In name yeah but when you look at the aesthetic and attire of the NPC’s they aren’t german…Like at all…In fact the female Kurzick’s wore an outfit that is extremely similar to a type of dress that was popular in Russia among the aristocracy or highborn houses. When you get to the ‘gothic’ architecture, it’s a style that was common in Europe and Russia alike. So yeah, there is a German influence with names but most of it isn’t the visual aesthetic of that region of Cantha.

Otherwise, I want races that are unique to Guild Wars, so I’m open to a whole heck of a lot of races but I don’t want the same stuff everyone else always does. ..IE: Elves. Perhaps there are pockets of Norn that ventured off to other regions such as Elona, sticking to the high altitude regions, avoiding humans altogether? Or some other place such as the Isles of Janthir or Maguuma…Or something… a really really really long time ago.

Or I guess they could just have evolved with a very huge gene pool…:x

This ^ I really hope its not true, and if it is true then this is absolute Garbage. Factions was amazing and Cantha was beautiful. I would love to see what an up to date Cantha would look like on this engine and have more story perhaps have one of the elder dragons might find its way down there. Why I've considered leaving GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shanna.4762

Shanna.4762

I understand where the OP is coming from, as a former GW1 player. I’ve said it in the thread about Cantha potentially being left out of GW2 despite it being such a massive part of the series, story, and lore.

(For those of you who don’t know, it was one of the primary campaigns/cultures/regions in the game, and you can click the link in my sig to find the topic)

There is truly NOT enough in this game that connects the two games together other than races, and very few, very basic/vague mentioning of iconic places and events in the timeline. If you’re new to Guild Wars due to GW2 and you haven’t really taken the time to look into it, then you’re probably assuming the game isn’t comparable to other older franchises when it comes to the amount and depth of the lore when in reality it is as most GW1 players know. And if you’re a GW1 player you know how disappointing it is that they haven’t gone very far to truly make you feel like you’re in the same world. I get all the changes, and the world definitely is beautiful, the game is fun but it feels like all they’re doing is focusing on system/mechanic changes and upgrades all the time, and I am glad they are doing that, but the direction of the game has almost completely veered off into another direction that anybody who was following it pre-launch would never have guessed, and that’s not a good thing. Again, I’m glad they’re improving WvW, I’m glad they’re improving sPvP and tournaments, I’m glad they’re improving all of the basic/core functions of the game but it’s time to move forward and get back to developing the WORLD by opening it up more, and expanding on that aspect of the game and getting back to what we were told this game would be.

I’ve had this discussion with a lot of friends, a lot of people have left because of these reasons and won’t be coming back until the direction is shifted back into place. I’m not at the point of quitting because generally I do really like the game. There is an increasingly negative connotation towards this game all over the MMO/Gaming communities, and it is partly due to be due to these specific issues.

as far as Trahearne is concerned…..Yeah, I didn’t like that he completely hijacked my story and the focus was all on his rise to greatness and my rise to sidekickness. That just flat out depressed me about the personal story.

New hairstyles all around would be nice, especially Sylvari. Their options are significantly lower than everyone elses. I’d also like to be able to use norn hair and tattoo/make up options on humans. At least some of them.

Does it really matter if the racial armors are available through WvW or not? lol

And the only gem-store related combat armor were there at launch.

I mean really, not a single set after launch?

yep, exactly what I’m saying. It is definitely strange that it’s “expensive to make armor skins” yet they keep making town clothes. It’s been months since launch and not a single new set has been added, yet it was stated that would be one of the staples of the gem shop. Isn’t that partially the point of a in-game shop, after all? I’ve never come across a game with one that doesn’t regularly upgrade it with new armor skins. Weapon Skins may be one thing, but armor skins should be do-able. The “it’s too expensive” argument is made invalid everytime they add a new clothes set.

Here’s a thought: stop making town clothes, and make armor skins you will end up making way more money and people will be much happier at the same time.

They’re not doing an expansion any time soon. They may be developing content that will be part of one that they haven’t decided on yet but there isn’t one planned right now. See, the thing is GW1 had so many really good looking armor skins and I see the gem shop being a great source for getting some of the best, more iconic looks without disrupting the art direction for the modern times in game, as well as some unique offerings that are directly derived from the current setting. The Black Lion Trader should have unique offerings and that includes armor skins. I read that they’re still expanding on the town-clothing feature coming up, but no word on new actual armor skins still. This is frustrating me to no end, all cash shops in MMO’s sell a huge variety of armor skins and that’s what people buy, they’re only hurting their own business by avoiding it if that’s what they’re doing.

A LOT of people have been asking for new armor skins, as the poster said. But Anet hasn’t delivered on anything like that except for town clothes. I don’t really understand this at all, because armor skins are often the most popular items in a cash shop, I don’t know if that’s the case here because they’ve only done 1 set per armor type and they’re not all that great compared to most other skins. And I haven’t found a developer response on this anywhere, either. It doesn’t feel like they really care about that type of thing and would rather continue adding town clothes. O_o.

I would of expected there would of been like 4 or 5 or more armor skin sets per class type this far into it’s 1st year, like I said that’s usually a huge driving force in getting people to use an MMO’s cash shop.

Sometimes I feel like the focus of the game has shifted dramatically from what it was going to be, before. I’ve said it before, I want GW2 to be a real sequel and that means going back to iconic places from the 1st game. I am glad they’ve focused on strengthening the core systems of the game but it would be nice to get new stuff too, now lol. As it is, being limited to where we are geographically is a bit frustrating and how little we are seeing when it comes to familiar things that tie the two games together. Without the Guild Wars title, there’s almost nothing outstandingly recognizable in the game that bridges them together making it feel like the same world. It doesn’t feel like the same world yet. Part of that would be both Cantha and Elona being included, and ways to directly link our characters to these original places.
