I’m happy about this. Her name doesn’t sound very Canthan, though..LOL I don’t know what to even think…Maybe there’s another ‘asian’ themed culture we don’t know about yet. I hope she’s Canthan, though…As I really need Cantha to be in this game eventually.

Cantha and the next expansion?

in Lore

Posted by: Shanna.4762

Shanna.4762

Well, the whole idea of Cantha being added to GW2 is extremely popular and highly requested (see the link in my signature). A developer has commented on it, and actually another developer talked about it a few days ago somewhere else (there’s a link somewhere in the last couple pages of the thread to it)…Cantha appears to be coming to GW2 at some point so it’s probably more a matter of “when”.

As far as the Kurzicks & Luxon go…Yes, they were defeated and conscripted into the Empire, but it’s also been over 200 years since we heard about any of that and just because they were conscripted into the Empire does not mean that somehow in the last 2 and a half centuries we haven’t heard about yet, that they haven’t managed to thrive as PART of the Empire, break apart from, be granted independence from, or any other possible outcome to do with the Empire. For all we know, the Monarchy has been abolished, and therefor the political and therefor factional situation has changed completely.

There’s also no reason why the people of those factions couldn’t have retained their culture in addition to the rest of Cantha’s culture, as many sub-cultures do in real life. There’s two and a half centuries left to the imagination so far, so nobody is really correct or incorrect at this point.

ArenaNet can decide to do what they want, if they want Cantha as the first expansion then they will make it the first expansion, if not then they won’t. I don’t think there’s any good reason to say it wouldn’t make sense, though as there’s all sorts of ways to include every race in Cantha, Elona, etc. The iconic cultures of GW1 should be very present in the direct sequel to the game, especially when it’s 250 years later, not 1050 years later.

Shanna.4762

Ya when I saw the Queen first thing I noticed was I expected her to have different hair and to me it didn’t fit. Her skin tone is perfect imo, ive always seen Kryta as a Portual/Spain area, we can get pretty dark as well as have lighter tones. Those areas made sense to me because the farther south you go the more dark the tones get and you start approaching Africa, which explains the more common Krytan npc look in gw1. I didn’t mind Jennah’s dress though, It could be better but it looks fine.

And you’d be correct about that. Kryta is inspired by the Mediterranean so Spain, France, Austria albeit it is important to note that those regions have lot’s of dark haired but light skinned people, but they do also have lot’s of very tan skinned people as well…. But yeah, her hair is terrible…I really just have to keep voicing this opinion LOL…

I’m ok with her dress, I was hoping it might be a little more opulent but it’s pretty enough. Hair, though? It needs to change.

I like that outfit, as well. It may be a little bit too coat-ish and a little archaic for the setting we’re in (250 years later) but they can modify & update it and still maintain the general aesthetic.

My problem with the armor in this game is that so much of it is too coat-like, or just flat out ugly. Light armor has the best variety and stylish-ness for sure, but we need a lot more on all ends of the spectrum, this goes for medium and heavy too.

personally, I like sexier/relatively risque armor sets depending on the character…But I think you can have sexy gear that isn’t naked as well and they should appeal to both tastes. My mesmer uses T2 cultural skins, wheras my thief uses t3 cultural. (both are human.)

I am confused though? If you are trying to be culturally considerate. Lets say i am Asian and i want to make my character look Asian right. Well you won’t let me, because the character creation will not let me create an Asian inspired character. Why is that we have no Cantha. Cantha allowed the creation of an Asian character. The human creation in GW2 will not let me choose to look like an Asian. So I am confused what is culturally considerate not creating an Asian themed location for who knows why. Or not allowing me to create an Asian looking character who reflects what i look like. The only human i can create look like Europeans and North Americans. I believe it is culturally inconsiderate to assume that i would want to make my character look like a North American or European are you implying they are the only ok human race to be?

:)

There’s a few faces that are Asian, although their presets may not really reflect that initially…But I have two characters who are Asian/Canthan..I know you’re just using it as an example but I figured I’d chime in in case you were having a bit of trouble finding a face that suits you. There definitely does need to be MORE choices, though and way more oriental hairstyles. There’s like, two…lol And you are right, it is incosiderate to leave out the Asian player base, or to slight them even if it’s not intentional, hopefully this will change as they prepare to launch the game in China & Korea.

Cantha had several great choices, and I would like to see some of those brought back in GW2, even if they are modified and updated to reflect the more modern era Tyria is entering into.

Any plans to bring players back to Orr?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’m definitely excited for people to return to Orr, but I am honestly a bit tired of it thematically. Zhaitan is dead timeline-wise now, so I hope that eventually we will see Orr evolve from here on out…The idea of reverting to mass mob density and all that doesn’t really make much sense.

Orr was really annoying before, it’s still annoying but depending on where you are it can be to a lesser degree…But the annoying factor is what caused a lot of people to avoid it at all cost anyway.I don’t think that “switching back” solves anything.

Now that Southsun’s story is apparently, and very abruptly over….Is that it? I can’t help but feel like it was enormously anti-climactic and that the zone is a train wreck of extremely difficult zerg/swarm events that nobody’s really going to do all that often, and story wise a bunch of dead & dying settlers and structures for no real apparent reason. I would of thought that by the end of the living story, having been helping these settlers since Flame & Frost that there would be a much better ‘ending’ to the whole scenario in the open world…or something. Instead it’s almost like we went from helping them build a settlement and in the middle of a giant catastrophe we saw fireworks and ran off screaming “FESTIVAL!!!!” and left them there to die.

@deechow Interesting ideas! I’ve always been a very strong supporter of Cantha maintaining it’s Asian inspirations, I think that adds a lot to what makes it so special thematically. But I do really like your ideas, maybe somewhere inbetween? I highly doubt that the “old world” would just cease, and that the culture & traditions, & architectural preferences would also simply cease within 250 years. If anything, due to it’s isolation it would be more realistic that it would continue to propagate and be deeper rooted in the newer & younger generations there. Also, a technologically advanced Cantha could be amazing, but imagine if that were an over time thing that we got to see beginning to happen once it opened back up to the rest of the world and we got to be a part of it. So when we get there initially, Kaineng has been dramatically cleaned up, even still maintaining much of it’s old districts but the old run down and horrible places have long since been destroyed, and built ontop of, offering a bit more of a multicultural experience giving Luxons & Kurzicks new districts in the city. And/or maybe some of the more ‘rural’ villages have developed into bigger hubs, and new villages have popped up in the mountains and such. There’s really so much potential and I think your ideas could fit quite nicely in some of it.

Lady Vireo! Thanks for the update and while I’m sad to see the Canthan origins of Dragon Festival get downplayed, I do understand the change in feelings towards Dragons given the events that have taken place since GW1! Maybe Canthan’s who still reside over there have shifted their views similarly since Zhaitan was the final blow in isolating them from the rest of the world.

Or maybe we will see the rise of a benevolent Dragon in the future? But it does appear that many of the aesthetics of Dragon Bash draw some noticeable degree of Canthan inspiration. I’m frustrated with the whole RNG for weapon skin tickets, I sort of hope they will give 1 ticket away for completing all the events at the end or something because I need at least 1 weapon from this :P

The return of the Canthan district in DR would be amazing, I agree.

More updates than MMOs with Subs?

I think that the best way for ArenaNet to understand what it is people want is for everyone to talk about what exactly they are expecting from them rather than comparing this game to a really old one made by a company with way more resources and took way more time to develop huge chunks of permanent content.

The problem with that method is the game would feel static and boring as heck if everything they added was always there. That’s the biggest flaw of any MMO to date, I appreciate that ArenaNet is trying to create a world that feels alive and isn’t static, and I trust that they have a good handle on how to go about doing that as it really hasn’t been done before, at least not to this degree. Yeah, we need more permanent content for sure…But I would prefer the seamless & progressive attempt at both in a reasonable amount of time, than to be waiting 3 months or 6 months for a big update where the world doesn’t really change much between it all.

I played WoW from launch. When it launched, it was still smaller than this game in scope but they’ve always been REALLY SLOW at content development and it made that game get boring ALL the time. Everyone would rush on to play the new update then slowly trickle off back to a capital city to chat & troll each other between dungeon runs. Blizzard is phenomenally slow, and honestly most of the updates weren’t all that big, and that’s not going to work in a modern MMO.

Cantha was horrible. I’m glad it’s gone. I hope it never returns. How can anyone think that place was fun?

Lot’s of people thought that it was amazing. Mostly from the lore, story, visual, cultural, etc side of things. Josh Foreman commented earlier in the thread about the technical limitations they encountered when building GW1, especially Cantha and how much of what was irritating about Cantha would not be an issue in this game due to the engine and technologies used to build GW2.

It’s cool if you didn’t like it, but please do elaborate on what specifically and why, and how would you change it for this game when/if Cantha is introduced.

@ Satzu.1356, if you really want to make the game only Euro-centric I suggest you should make another thread. This is because this is about Cantha (yes it is related but it would not benefit you as much talking here). Make a thread (or join a thread that’s more suitable to your case) and let ArenaNet know that you and (many others?) want Guild Wars 2 to only have Euro-centric themes.

Cantha, is already well established in the first game. This is why Cantha is important to many players. It is not solely on only because it is Asian. If you never played the first game and do not know what Cantha is aside from the fact that it has major Asian influences, please do some research. By the way, all three continents have a mix influences. Also, I do not care about what others game have done, whether they are only Europe themes or not. Those are other games, this is Guild Wars 2. Please don’t expect Guild Wars 2 must follow what other games do as if it is a law. Look at how ArenaNet decide to not have the holy trinity in Guild Wars 2. Sorry to disappoint you, but I think this game is just not for you.

tl;dr feel free to state your ignorance. It just wouldn’t help your case here. You’re better off making another thread (since I believe you are kind of off topic here) or playing another game. The Guild Wars 2 as it is wouldn’t suit your Euro-only theme taste.

I’ve played the first game, as I said that earlier in one of my comments (you probably only read one of them =/ ) and honestly, It was not really connected with the whole game as it was really just an isolated island that you can’t see on the global map and that you can’t access unless you go on a joyful ride on a boat.
Btw, Asian themes are in almost every mmorpg and so ArenaNet is just following the ugly trend.
Oh, and thank you for your suggestion! I will be making a thread soon.

Please stop double or quadruple posting, instead try to reply within one post unless someone else has gone after you. We all get it – for whatever reason, you don’t like Asian themes and you don’t want an iconic part of the GW IP added to this game. It’s okay if you didn’t like Cantha but you are just arguing with people for no other reason than to argue with them as you’ve yet to provide any substantial or constructive response and/or feedback on the issue. The GW IP is multi-cultural, it always has been and always should be. We get that you prefer the norse & european inspirations and want the game to be pigeonholed into that very limited scope. But most people do not appear to want that, and are here to discuss Cantha & what they would like to see with it in this game, and to try to bring attention to the issues we don’t have answers for so far that could potentially prevent it. You obviously didn’t pay attention to GW1 if you played it, though as Cantha was directly connected to the rest of the game and was directly tied into content + story in both Elona & Kryta. It was not just an isolated island, it had islands but mainland Cantha was a continent… And you could see it on the map.

I’m hoping we see permanent changes to some existing zones in the future, like Orr’s recovery and new shift in focuses and content there while we also expand into new regions of the game, as it would be interesting to actually be able to “live/play” through the changes in Orr and the overall primary storyline and changes to the world as a result.. New dungeons, armor sets, weapons, and sandbox-esque features would be amazing too for permanent content as well.

I wouldn’t be opposed to Town Clothes being able to work in a similar way as Armor Skins, or combat-ready either. That would be pretty neat as well, but they really do need to add new actual armor skins to both the gem shop & in-game means as well.

If you google Guild Wars 2 or 1 concept art for armor skins there are so many ideas there that would fit perfectly into the games setting and would be amazing sets to have. I just don’t really get why they haven’t added more armor set skins to the gem shop though after all this time. If it’s a DLC pack for the anniversary or whatever then…Eh lol that’s okay but I’d prefer more regular updates with that instead because I would definitely spend my money on armor skins I really like, I just really don’t buy town clothes and have 0 vested interest in them. And if I feel that way I figured I wasn’t in a minority on this. And clearly I’m not. Thanks for the replies everyone!

This is driving me crazy. I’ve had discussions with many other players when this topic has come up…The gem shop is in serious need of armor skins, not town clothes. I feel like this is “27 Dresses: GW2 Edition” (for those of you who haven’t seen it, it’s a movie where she collects dresses she’ll only wear once, and never again.)

The game is like 9 months post-launch and we’ve got the same 3 armor sets since day one as our only gem shop option for armor skins! I would of literally bet that by now there would have been at least 4 or 5 new sets per armor type, instead we’ve had about that much in town clothes sets that nobody ever seems to use for more than a couple days after they’ve been released.

The gem shop is the best way to introduce an upgraded version of the best armor sets from GW1, and/or themed sets based off the update/era we’re in, or whatever you feel like (get creative if you want!)…All while maintaining whatever theme it is you want via any potential new dungeons in the future. I’ve never played a MMO with an in-game shop for real money that didn’t regularly update combat-ready armor skin sets. Those are always the most popular items in an in-game shop. I’ve heard the argument that it’s probably expensive to develop new armor skins. This logic would dictate that it’s probably equally as expensive to design town clothes, then. Because it’s basically doing the same thing, except boring and less popular. So switch resources from the town clothes team for a good long while, and have them develop really nice gem-shop armor sets that you can make bucket loads of money off us with, instead.

Edit: And please don’t RNG it. That would just be lame.

Skryim had very little Asian themes to it and look at how successful they were. I hope The Elder Scrolls Online doesn’t intend to stray away from their greatness.

Okay, and that’s because that’s what they went with so far. Guild Wars has never been exclusively western in theme or inspiration. Skyrim/ES franchise is as popular as it is because of the modding community, though. The games themselves are pretty weak when it comes to deep and engaging or traditional RPG ropes. Between the extensive modding capability, and the free roam of a huge world…That’s the draw to that franchise, it’s not because of how “engaging” the games are outside of those aspects..Because (arguably) they’re pretty weak outside of that…Again that’s the decision they’ve made so far and that’s great for them because it’s worked out. I’m sure TESO will be fantastic, and I’m sure I’ll also enjoy that game but it’s comparing apples to oranges when you compare the two. And honestly it’s extremely unimaginative and boring to stick to very specific “safe” cultural inspirations for your entire game.

However, Bethesda did talk about the Asian culture they have had fleshed out in that world a long time ago but it’s never been fully introduced to any of the games because they’ve not visited where they supposedly have it placed in the timeline with any of their games yet. So, you probably will see an Asian culture pop up in TESO eventually, like when they try to launch it in Asia :P. The biggest thing I remember about that dev chat was that they said the Asian themed culture was at one point almost wiped out to a plague. But that’s about all they’ve talked about with it. There are supposedly “easter eggs” scattered around the games that mention that event, though.

So, I don’t really understand why you would even care if there’s Asian themes or not in these games that but a huge emphasis on cultures. If you don’t like Asian/Oriental themes or inspirations then you don’t have to play a character from them, or explore those areas…Your personal preference to stick to western themed regions are just that. YOUR personal preference. And I see no reason why it would bother you at all that other people get what they want when you’re also, and already getting what you want out of it.

I am about to boil in rage!
The idea of swords, magic, dwarfs, centaurs, etc. truelly belongs to Mideval European Mythology and NOT Asian Mythology.
I do not want to see any more Asian themes or I will scream and quit (just like I did with WoW)

Then you’ll probably just want to quit, because if you’re a western mythology purist you’re going to absolutely loathe this game & the franchise as you do not seem to understand what is about, and therefor why this thread in particular is so massive.

Your logic (if there even is any in that post) is flawed. We live on the same planet as China, Japan, Korea, etc…But NA/EU are western regions, and therefor more deeply saturated in western mythologies. Asia is in the east, and more deeply saturated in eastern & oriental mythologies. Yet we all manage to coexist to some level, in the same world and generally enjoy each other’s different mythologies quite a lot in our respective regions and ultimately they both belong equally as a part of human culture & civilization.

Guild Wars, as an IP, operates in the same way that Tyria is the world, and there are many different cultures and societies within it. Cantha, which is heavily influenced by Asia (literally, Asia, not anime. Asia.) and this makes up the core & foundation of Cantha’s aesthetic, and identity. Just as you have Elona, which is very much influenced by Africa (Egypt included), and India, you’ve got Kryta which is influenced by Mediterranean Europe (Spain & France)..I Could go on but I’m pretty sure I’ve made my point already.

These things are not just ‘artstyles’, these are very much a part of the identity of the game & the world ArenaNet has created. The franchise is not based upon western mythology, and if you’re hoping it would be then you’re really probably playing the wrong game if you don’t want them to venture into other cultural influences, because if they don’t they will be betraying a good 80% of what made this IP so fantastic in the first place, to so many people.

Lastly…Swords & Magic are absolutely very much a part of Asian mythology, probably even more so than Western mythologies in many respects so you’re flat out wrong there. Dwarves & Centaurs also are in many Asian mythologies, their representation is varied from our own, though. So your list of what does and doesn’t belong in which regional mythos is about as incorrect as you could be. But ultimately, it’s not about real world Mythology. It’s about Tyria & Guild Wars. Cantha is Cantha, it’s not China, Japan or Korea. And as it is such a massive part of the identity of “Tyria” as a world, it absolutely belongs in this game just as much as any of the other cultures & regions do.

^ I really don’t think changing any of that would be necessary. They may need to stick to a more uniform design, IE Chinese, Japanese, etc…But they don’t need to totally change the cultural inspiration or aesthetic.

And no they haven’t tried to make it disappear out of existence in GW2, either because it is mentioned by several NPC’s in cities, there are several characters in the story who are Canthan, and some of the ascended items are also Canthan artifacts. There are also very small “easter eggs” if you will through out the game, and during the Order of Whispers story arc that elude to the probability that Cantha is still there. There are a few prominent members of the human aristocracy (noble story arc) that are quite obviously Canthan, and one of Lions Arch’s most prominent families is also Canthan. They just might not ever bother to add it as a region, or add much of anything to do with it due to the silly and unfortunate decisions made a long time ago and this annoys the community a great deal. Cantha belongs in Tyria, in GW2, in all it’s oriental themed glory.

NPC clothing/armor release to player?

tbh ArenaNet should be focusing on armor skins in the gem shop rather than town clothes. I’m so over the town clothes thing, like hardly anyone even seems to bother with them and I know that I have no interest whatsoever in anything I can’t wear in combat, and neither do pretty much anyone I play with. Nobody seems to understand or even like this town clothes obsession they’ve got going on… so it’s a big giant waste of resources compared to armor skins.

How much I miss the iconic places in GW1 and how amazing they could be here.

Imbecile business decision-makers, listen to this:

When we say we are tired of asian bullkitten we mean anime looking characters, exagerated weapons and overly flashy skills. We mean we are tired of all the tropes and conventions found in asian mmorpgs.

We do not mean we don’t want an in-game civilization that is based on real world Asia.
Asian cultures provide some of the most aesthetically (If not the most) interesting architecture, landscapes, clothing… etc.

So yeah, get your crap straight.

^This…and I hate using “^This”

Unfortunately GW2 has, so far, done exactly that. Barbie female options, rediculously flashy weapons and armor(for a GW heir), and fighting in even a small group is like being at a disco while on LSD. And the unique human cultural distinctions they had in GW1 are pretty much gone.

There are parts of the game that are very well done, but the overall sugar-coated, circus-feel of GW2 is over-bearing.

I don’t totally agree with you on this, because a lot of the options are not very cute lol. And GW1 always had flashy/sexy armor & weapons. I don’t think this makes it anime-like, though GW has always had a unique art style that blends western and eastern art themes together. But I do agree with you that humans need more to distinguish their cultural heritage than we currently have. I really hope that at some point they allow us to choose the heritage of our characters like they had originally intended, and that they do something with that because the different cultures are a massive part of what makes this IP interesting.

Last Stand at Southsun: Feedback/Opinion

Honestly, I really don’t like the explorable version of CL. People have a hard time with all the chaos once he gets low. I don’t really think either instance encounter adds much of anything to the game or story, F&F was way better with the instanced content. Here’s hoping Southsun becomes really awesome after these updates because if it doesn’t turn into some cool place you want to go all the time after all of this nonsense then I won’t know why arenanet has bothered with any of this.

Lets Redesign Queen Jennah.

I’m pretty sure they’ve been going for the “very young, probably naive Queen” like in Star Wars or something. Not the mature, hardened type of Queen and honestly I like her personality as it is. They want to keep her different from Salma who was the hardened type, this is a Queen that ascended to the throne by inheritance at a very young age, many generations since Salma was placed on it, so it’s not like she’s going to have been in the same situation to become overly hardened. But you don’t really get a very strong indication of her personality without having read the books & stuff that takes place before this game starts which is the mistake they are making with her & many other characters. I really hope that Queen Jennah, Countess Anise, and all the other leaders of each race take a much bigger role in the future because they have the potential to be really phenomenal…And everyone loves a good Queen character.

On the subject of her looks….Her hair really is a mess, it’s going in two different directions and looks like she just rolled out of bed. I have NO idea why they didn’t use the fancy tiara & bun hairstyle, that looks like a Queen’s hairstyle. She needs to be fancier. Her skin tone is fine, she’s supposed to look this way. She’s not supposed to be very dark, she’s Krytan not Elonian. Salma was just a tiny bit darker than her but also had reddish hair lol, and it’s been many generations, and Kryta has been the primary home for most Tyrian humans since Cantha & Elona are currently isolated, or at least have been for most of this time, but now that Zhaitan is dead who knows what will happen. But this means Ascalonian’s gravitated there, Canthan’s who got out of Cantha have gravitated there, etc…There’s a good chance all these generations of mixing cultures would have at some point reached the Royal family so she shouldn’t look exactly like the “Krytans” that were running around 250+ years ago, given the circumstances.

Will GW2 get paths?

Actually almost no MMO offers housing. Everquest II and …. not much else.

Most of them say they will pre-launch and then fail to deliver…

Its really disappointing. I’m with the OP on wanting housing, but I don’t think we should claim its a common feature when it isn’t.

We have a home instance which is more than most. But its still a sadly underused feature…

I’m sure I’m not alone in being the sort who would glady buy loot off the gem store to decorate my home instance for… no rational reason at all… other than to do it.

I remember being so excited on launch day when I saw the human home instance the first time. I ran up three floors of one little house in there thinking of what I’d be able to decorate it with “soon.” Then reality checked myself and remembered no such feature had ever been promised.

Um? Many games offer housing…LOL it would take forever to list them all.

ArenaNet has already said they plan on housing in this game, they always have and have slowly been planning on how/where/when to implement it into the game so it’s really just a matter of when. This is literally something ArenaNet has commented on several times in the past. The last time was not all that long ago, maybe a couple of months at most? Home instances are not going to be housing, it will be separate most likely.

When it comes to paths like Wildstar, I don’t know. I guess it’s entirely possible but probably not in the current regions we have, it would probably come from much broader and open regions like if they add Elona, or Cantha which are gigantic. This game has a lot of potential for many sandbox features, and I think that over time we will periodically get more here and there but they won’t turn the game into a full blown sandbox that’s for sure. Maybe GW3 lol.

But yeah, I want housing in this game but I want it done extremely well.

Thoughts on Leaked Armor/WvW map?

Here are the leaked stuff. I just like building suspense (justkidding, i actually wasn’t sure if it was against the rules. Hopefully not)

Armor:
Helm: http://i.imgur.com/BKoLWLx.png
Helm #2: http://i.imgur.com/MpkmNSj.png
Full Armor Set : http://i.imgur.com/HobDEvY.png
Full Armor Set #2: http://i.imgur.com/gTFJsQc.png
Hairstyle: http://i.imgur.com/MwtRq6u.png

WvW map: http://i.imgur.com/qoKFvDt.jpg

This WvW map image is old as hell. I remember seeing it a long time ago. I dont know about those armors, though. But they just seem random 3d models. Where did you find it?

Helm 1: Looks like the Twilight Arbor helm.
Helm 2: It’s either the Molten Alliance helm, or it’s the Sorrow’s Embrace helmet.
Armor set #1: Looks like Molten Alliance or Sorrow’s Embrace armor.
Armor Set #2: I do believe that is either Brutus’ Chestguard or the Barbaric coat.
Hairstyle: That is definitely not in the game. This could be incoming material.

armor set 1 doesn’t look like any of that at all.
