The way of the Shield!

The shield is lackluster in pve. You’d be better served using the focus imo. It provides blind, regen, condition removal, blocking a blast finisher and a high damage attack if the shield isn’t broken.

This absolutely drives me nuts. It’s as if they assigned the wrong item to the spell sets.

@Clay

What I like is how many times you say I’m “wrong” in your posts. You have accused me in the past of saying you’re wrong, except I almost never say it.

So now you want to bring in expertise, people more experienced to define things. Yet when I point out I’m more experienced that you, you dismiss it.

Experienced people have all sorts of opinions on things, but they don’t all agree with each other. I’d say Ravious is pretty experienced and he didn’t think Guild Wars 2’s combat was shallow.

That’s because this isn’t opinion, this is fact we are talking about. The depth of a game, not only has to do with different experiences that you can get out of the game, but how effective those experiences are.

In GW2, first, there isn’t much more than just direct damage and dodging. And, anything else, is really less effective than direct damage, which makes them irrelevant to the game’s depth.

These are all facts. You can have an opinion about a fact all you want, but you would be wrong.

I’ll say one thing, you guys sure entertain me in what the two of you think are “fact” and “opinion.”

Unlimited achievement points

Dailies/Monthlies should be removed from the achievement pool.

You better remove WvW and sPvP from that too, as not everyone plays sPvP and WvW and there are a few points to be had there, also remove the FotM ones and all Dungeon points too, as not everyone does them, do you see the problems your running into here by trying to change something that really has no bearing on the game at all.

The point of an achievement system is to show which players are the most well-rounded players in both PvP and PvE, so there are no “problems” being run into by having a finite achievement system including both sides.

In all fairness, the “I swung a sword, I swung it again, hey! I swung it again. That’s great, we just don’t want players to grind in GW2. No one enjoys that. No one finds it fun. We wanna change the way that people view combat.” remark no longer applies.

The new version is…
“I rolled, I rolled again, hey! I rolled again. That’s great, we just don’t want players to fight like knights and warriors of old in GW2. No one enjoys realism. No one finds it fun like super mario. We wanna change the way that people view combat and make them roll about in full plate armour like they are a ballerina.”
;)

THIS is the biggest problem I have with the game.

I’m a Guardian carrying a massive, heavy shield around along with a sword. To do the most damage I can do all I have to do is let my auto-attack cycle while I hit an occasional cooldown.

What do I do to block incoming blows?

Somersaults.

Crafting should be a viable way to make money. Honestly crafting should be the backbone of the ingame economy and not random drops as it is now.

I haven’t seen a game where crafting was profitable at max level.

I made a ton of money prospecting ore and crafting bags in WoW.

The problem with the economy is all crafting professions are pretty much self-contained. You make all the intermediate materials yourself to craft gear. You don’t have to depend on tailors making your helmet lining, or things like that.

Sorry, but the company, IMO, has let down their GW1 fanbase. As such, I can’t support a development team that turned their backs on the fanbase that made them successful.

guess you missed the idea of the post, if your gonna troll do it elsewhere,

for things you appreciate about this game only

Sorry, I was replying to your giant thread title that yelled at me “HELP SUPPORT THIS GAME!!”.

I was just giving my reason for not supporting. Sorry it offended you so much.

if you dont support it why play it if its so bad?

Why do you care?

And you? Why would you care that some one likes the game? You seem to go to great ends to put down any type of positivity here.

I didn’t quote or reply to one person about them being wrong for liking the game. I never have. Ever.

I added my own little post about my opinion. If everyone wants to get all upset about that then let them. I’m gonna voice my opinion.

Just because you do not quote something dose not make it any less that your commenting on the main post. The idea of threads is that you have a title and the first post this set the reason for having it. Then ppl commented on the ideas presented in that post. No need to quote that first post.

So you can’t say something different than what the OP states? So, if I make a thread that says I think the combat system sucks, are you and everyone that disagrees going to stay out of it? I thought not….

Seems like we’ve gone way off track in this thread for one measly little post I made about my opinion… What a shame you guys can’t get over people with different opinions.

No you can but your going to get call out on your views too. If this is about how we can support the game saying that you hate something in the game or hate a view that some one holds for liking the game dose not fit the thread at all. Its simply getting off subject like this line of questioning.

You think I would post in a forum if I cared about getting called out?

I feel like you two are talking past each other.

Probably. Jski doesn’t like my opinions about the game and feels the need to remind me constantly, instead of just letting my posts go and forgetting about them – which would cause must less derailment of threads and flaming.

Hypocrisy you can slice with a knife.

Using a flawed analogy doesn’t really help your case.

If you feel it is a flawed analogy, feel free to explain where the flaw is. Until then, I have to assume you concede my point and merely don’t want to admit it.
I was attempting to show the ridiculousness of a scenario where it is difficult to “draw the line” when that line is imaginary and up for debate. For example, Mirta has been arguing that there are certain uses of Mesmer portals that are clear exploits, despite the fact that no such rules have ever been stated within the game or by ArenaNet, anywhere. He thinks it’s okay to use portals to kite bosses, and even okay to get from place to place within certain fractals more quickly, but it’s not okay to use them within jumping puzzles.

Honestly, it may not be possible to ever truly define what an exploit is, to any degree of objective certainty. It’s a term that relies on subjective judgments and variable circumstances. However, ArenaNet wants to deal with a subtle, complex issue using the most blunt, hard-nosed response imaginable. When I ask for more clarity on this topic, I get nothing but cop-outs, personal anecdotes about cartoonishly extreme scenarios, and insistence that it’s just “common sense.”

The flaw is you’re expecting everybody to understand that the standard speed limit of a certain single road is 40km/hr instead of 60km/hr.

Now, if you’re on a road and all the speed limit signs you have passed for the past hour state 60km/hr and you see a single sign that says “SPEED LIMIT 600km/hr” common sense would dictate that something is wrong and you’re not going to just floor it and not expect some sort of consequence.

No different than seeing a list of armor selling for 5k karma, except for one single piece on the menu listed for 50 karma. It has all the same stat levels, maybe different stats, but it’s the same color as everything on that screen.

If that doesn’t send up a red flag, I’m not sure what would.

So yes, it involves common sense.

Because it is irrelevant to your definition. Your definition simply said allowing people to skip stuff. That is it. The reason I used portal is because it almost always is a part of letting people skip stuff.

Alright, I should have been clearer:
An exploit is if EVERYONE IN THE PARTY WITHOUT USE OF SKILLS can skip stuff that is not designed to be skipable.

You mean like running through mobs that are leashed? :P

Although, now that we mention it, I think that thieves using culling in WvW gave them an unfair advantage. Would that be an exploit? If so, why weren’t all the people that did that banned?

Your definition of exploit as it relates to perma-bans is quite vague and poorly defined.

Culling was intentional on the part of the developers. An item priced at one-tenth of what it obviously should be wasn’t. It’s probably a good clue that when you’ve hit the ore for the 40th time in a row and it still hasn’t run out, it’s probably bugged. It’s really not rocket-science, no matter how much you want play with semantics.

Common sense dictates what a true exploit is. The unfortunate part is it isn’t all that common anymore, apparently.

But people used it to gain an unfair advantage, which is part of lordkrall’s definition of an exploit.

I never said I agreed with his definition.

I’m saying apply common sense and the picture becomes pretty clear.

The whole point of me posting was to show that his definition is vague. I have no other argument on this matter except that exploits can sometimes be vague as well. And, some games don’t punish you for exploits as much as others.

There are exploits of game design, which are acceptable. Examples being using portals to skip content, or running through mobs instead of fighting them because they are on leashes, or jumping down a cliff and risking dying instead of fighting mobs.

Then there are the exploits of an obvious bug/programming error…i.e. the karma exploit. It was obvious, and I mean OBVIOUS, that wasn’t intended design. Or a bugged ore vein which gives up infinite ores.

Again, it isn’t rocket science.

It was an exploit of game mechanics, but not a bannable one. There is a difference.

Thieves could not avoid exploiting culling, stealth is a defined role of their class. Though some players took this to the extreme there is no way to ban these players for using their skills as intended.

The stealth spamming builds still exist post culling meaning they weren’t designed explicitly to exploit culling.

And there it is….common sense.

No way.

As pointed out, paying for support in a business model like Guild Wars 2 would mean that the incentive for ArenaNet would be to include bugs in releases.

Altruistic Healing in Solo Play

I know AH is used for group play, but a few people have serious issues with it in solo play. I posted a build yesterday, and it got a lot of feedback, most of which was useful. Yes, I understand that a build that works for some people won’t work for others, and that’s fine. The thing that got me was, besides the apparent lack of reading and extreme tunnel vision by two people, was that they said AH in solo play was horrible, and not having Inspired Virtue with AH was horrible. Maybe it is for them, but I’m wondering if anyone else feels that way. I did the math for my build, and I honestly don’t see the issue with getting 600-800 heals off symbols and multiple boon procs. I don’t even need to use my heal most of the time, just because I have access to so many others. Any other issues with having AH in a solo/WvW/Dungeon build? I honestly do all three to much to keep switching trait points and such.

Play what you feel comfortable with. Those who use the terms “horrible” and such really don’t deserve much attention, IMO.

I can’t think of an encounter I’ve ever had out in the PvE world where I sit and wished I had a certain trait over another one, since they’re all pretty easy.

I was told in another thread that utilizing an exploit was a sign of “skill.”

Yeah, I’m still laughing at that one too.

Knowing about an exploit is a sign of game knowledge, which is part of being good at the game.

Being ABLE to do the exploit is a sign of game ability, which is also part of being good at the game.

Abusing the exploit is another topic altogether.

But most importantly, it must be clear to each player what exactly IS an exploit.

Knowledge does not equal skill. I know every rule in golf and I know a lot about the history of it, but I still carry a 16 handicap.

In this case the exploit was buying something that was obviously mis-marked in price.

Getting up into an area where a boss can’t get to you isn’t an exploit to me, it’s a tactic. It’s up to the designers if they want to remove that tactic or not.

That is correct..the term/issue is ‘limited’.

I re-subbed to WoW while still doing GW2 to see MoP and how it was.

I still prefer GW2 world and graphics, but overall WoW still has the better fight and PvP mechanics and overall ‘customization’

What bugs me about GW2 is that the lack of combat ‘style’ on your toon. Having 5 attacks and then a few more extra things to do honestly isn’t enough diversity. Going back, I definitely liked the new talent trees and picking my ‘style’ for my Warrior. On top of that, having 15 or so buttons to use during combat is a lot better then 5-7.

I have an engineer main in GW2 and it is absolutely BORING doing fights. It’s honestly monotonous. It makes me not want to play the game.

I think GW2 needs to up the number of buttons from 10 to 15 at least. I’d like to see them add some trinket/effect buttons and also maybe 2 more unique abilities that you can choose to use in combat. I don’t like how my weapon determines for example that I can charge. Charge should be a baseline ability of a Warrior.

I love the armors, but honestly they need a little more to them…a little more ‘style’.

The fighting animations need improved. I feel like characters ‘skate’ over combat and please for the love of god fix the Warrior whirlwind..looks really stupid.

No.. just, no. I’ve seen some screenshots of wow mods and its ridiculous as to the amount of buttons and keys you have on screen. It may be a synch for vet players but it easily daunts new players. I tried to play wow, and the normal hotkey bars were enough for me. I find the notion that you NEED mods to play a game more effectively ridiculous.

You don’t need a single mod to play WoW, so your premise is a complete falsehood. Most of those buttons in those screenshots you use as examples are just convenience buttons for things such as mounts, potions, food, bandages, etc. Very few of them were used in actual fighting. My Paladin used maybe 8 or 9 spells during a fight. And even that is stretching it.

It's not the lack of a trinity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shootsfoot.9276

Shootsfoot.9276

The lack of trinity in this game is not the provblem It’s arguably one of its few strongest points.

There’s a host of other problems that detract from the game. You are more or less locked into a build by traits and your two weapons. Same is true of armor. The whole thing is very limiting

Secondly, The game herds you into a zerg style of play that rewards you for tagging large groups enemies. Almost everything else falls to the wayside. Support roles are not effective and they actually punish the player. You will lose drops, and XP. You realize very quickly that it pays to do mild damage to a lot of mobs than to synergize with you team mates.

Last but not least. They have all these great specs and traits that go basically unused. Why? Because one, resetting is a pain and costly. Two, you are going to be solo a lot in this game, so damage/defense has to be priority. (at the cost of everything else)

That is correct..the term/issue is ‘limited’.

I re-subbed to WoW while still doing GW2 to see MoP and how it was.

At the same time, with all those spells for, say, paladins in WoW, your optimized rotation was still 6 or 7 spells. Sure there were big CD spells and such, but it was still only 6 or 7 main spells. And they never ever changed, even if you changed talents/weapons.

So I guess what I would like to see in GW2 is a mix of what we have now and a bit more of an active-feeling combat system. I love how spells change with weapon swaps. But I would like to see something like 15 choices of spells per weapon, of which you can choose 5.

I would also like to see the first attack not be chained. As a guardian with sword/shield for instance, my main attack/dps is my auto-attack..three spells which cycle automatically. All the rest of the time I’m waiting on cooldowns so I can eventually use them while I dodge.

There seems to be a lot more downtime in GW fighting than in WoW. I’m not saying I want 30 spells/attacks available at once, but I would like the current system to be a little more active feeling and with a bit more flexibility per weapon.

Probably never will happen, but a man can dream.

This has been brought up before on several threads. On one of them at least, the answer was given that they decided it would take up to much data space to store all the pet names.

From that thread:

MokahTGS.7850:
This is actually not a bug, it is working as intended. It is not optimal, but to save the names of all of your pets (read: all of everyone’s pets) would require another large name database that ANet did not create. Currently the pet name feature saves the name in the slot, not the pet, so changing out the pet type resets the slot name.
Perhaps someday they will change this, but it is not a bug.

Open world Duels [Merged]

You most likely won’t be playing GW2 much longer than. It is a known fact that custom arenas will be added to the game and one of those reasons is specifically to add dueling, which the developers think is a good and necessary part of an MMO.

So, is it REALLY worth quitting over dueling if you like the rest of the game?

I doubt many people have an objection to an arena where where players can go and duel, because you have to opt in to something like that. Anyone objecting to that is selfish, IMO. You going off somewhere else to duel doesn’t affect me in the slightest. There is enough desire in the player base to justify developer time in creating an arena for people to duel in, and a way for people to watch those duels.

However, wanting to wave your weenie around Lion’s Arch while labeling those of us that don’t want to be forced watch as selfish is hypocritical in the extreme.

Understand the difference, Clay, or should I go back to ignoring your opinion on the matter? Either way is fine, but I’d just as soon not be uncivil.

I don’t see the difference. I think the OP is just asking for the ability to 1v1 without having to do something that wasn’t intended, such as using an empty PvP space or go into WvW.

What am I missing?

I thought dueling was optional in other games as well. Is that not the case?

Yes, it’s completely optional, and it’s completely unobtrusive.

I was never a big dueler, but this outcry over dueling is ridiculous.

I think if you could survey why people picked their professions you might notice some gender differences in the reasons but I doubt it makes a significance difference in the overall numbers.

I play a human female guardian. And this community is so much better than WoW’s because it seems like everyone here knows that a female character they meet in-game is usually just a guy who’s playing a female character and not an actual female player. I tried a female character in WoW and some random dude came up to me and started hitting on me. It was pretty….. weird.

Oh, it still happens here, trust me.

Exactly why I deleted my female Mesmer.

But in my experience it doesn’t happen often. I have 4 female characters (vs 1 male) and even my ele, who’s usually wearing as little as possible (and with light armor that can be almost nothing), doesn’t get hit on often and when she does it’s most likely to be someone from my guild joking around.

Unless you count GW1 I haven’t played other MMO’s since I quit UO over 10 years ago but getting hit on was an every day occurrence there (and it wasn’t exactly uncommon for some people to take it all the way to cyber). It seems to have gotten better since then (I suspect it’s partially that the novelty value has worn off) but from what I’ve heard of other games GW2 does seem to be better for respecting both female characters and female players.

Only took once for me.

That’s all I’m saying.

Does gender really play a role in class selection? I’d think it occurs more in race selection than class. For example, guys may tend to go for chars/norn while females may tend to go for sylvari/asura/human/etc.

I don’t believe that is the case either. (I’m female with a human and a norn char, although it would have been more typical for me to go for charr – I usually play orcs or trolls were available.)

http://gw2census.com/charts.php numbers suggest that there is no significant difference in race preference between male and female players.

Not sure where/how they get their data, but it really doesn’t matter to me.

EDIT: NVM, I see how it’s done now.

Personally I think the male/female question is kind of silly.

Essentially the mechanics in pve versus mobs (as opposed to the mechanics of fighting other players) are not as favorable to an elementalist. Currently ele’s are on the hate list of spvp because they can cleanse and heal so well, and also do some damage at the same time. Makes them hard to deal with in that environment. In wvw, they still have some of what makes them so great in spvp, but not as much. In dungeons, they are a decidedly weaker class than in either spvp or wvw.

So if we say that an ele is 100% effective in spvp, some of that 100% “bleeds” over to wvw because the mechanics are still pretty close, and much less of that effectiveness “bleeds” over to pve, because the mechanics are pretty different.

The warrior has the opposite problem. They are very effective in pve, sorta effective in wvw, and decidedly weaker in spvp. Some classes are good all around, and others follow either the ele or warrior example.

I understand what you’re saying.

Still think it’s a poor choice of words. Even if he’s trying to say "Yeah, we really hosed that one…warriors rock in PvE but they blow chunks in WvW.

I chose the classes that I thought would be the most fun to play. I don’t see why you would think that one’s sex plays any role in determining what classes they enjoy playing on this game though.

The title of this topic is offensive. I certainly don’t want duels, and I don’t want to see certain areas (probably Queensdale) becoming overpopulated with testosterone fueled egotists picking a fight with any and everyone who passes by. I don’t want to see them in public, preening like peakittens over some infantile victory they and no-one else perceives as being important.
Sure, introduce duels. Just put them somewhere the general public don’t have to be exposed to their obnoxiousness.
I’m sure a lot of these people crying for duels wouldn’t want them if they realised no-one was watching them.

LOL…you’re offended by a title’s generalization and then the rest of your post is nothing but generalizations.

Guess the idea of me going up against a guildie to learn how to play against a certain profession is out of the question to you, then.

Irony.

Since I only played on the correct side (Horde :P) explain to me what you guys mean by “another Goldshire?”

Goldshire is where all the bad stuff from WoW goes to breed and plot to take over the rest of the zones. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Just google: Goldshire Meme, and you will get a basic idea. I never ran into an analogue on Horde side.

Barrens chat!! Cmon man, how could you have never heard of Barrens chat??

>shrug<

Maybe because after day two of playing the game I realized trade chat was a cesspool and turned it off.

Everybody who wanted to duel hung outside of Org on my server. Then occasionally ally would fly in and we’d go at it for a while.

Was fun.

Orc starting zone is probably the closest to it…if you had naked rp’ing pedophillic elves, constant insults to your heritage, beggars, people dancing on the roof of the inn, guild smack talk, newb griefing, and a never ending stream of “Duel me bro, Duel me!!! Whatsamatter ya scared?” Made me sorry I rolled Alliance when I first started playing.

Which brings me to why I retracted my endorsement of duelling. No matter where you implement it, you’re going to start having that player type. And it will ruin the game. Some of the replies reminded me of those players.

That’s funny. I never noticed that on horde side. But I was warned that the ally side was generally filled with immaturity, so it sounds like it was good advice with what you’re describing.

Bleed means to cross over (to have an effect) to a degree that is noticeable. Warriors are good in pve and some wvw =The warriors effectiveness in pve bleeds over to some extent in wvw. An example of non game usage is when you put red colors in with whites in the wash and the red “bleeds” onto your whites.

Well, then that’s a horrible use of the term if that’s what he’s saying. Read this excerpt from the interview:

“The ele is the PvP extremely powerful at evasion right now. But even then, he bleeds into WvW, he is adamantly not useful in PvE as a damage mitigator.”

That makes no sense at all to me, even ignoring the typos/grammar.

economy and professions for anet not players?

when you look at the entire game economy (rewards, gem store, bltc, rng, crafting…) and profession designs (limited variety and customization outside of gear, limited weapons and skills, buttons to press…) *you can clearly see that these two core areas of the game were designed more for anet wallets and sanity, not the players overall long term enjoyment. *

Please demonstrate how you came to this conclusion.

the game design demonstrates what i’m talking about. all you need to do is break down the economy and professions then think about how it affects players.

You’d actually get a discussion if you could be more specific than “the game design.”

what purpose does the entire game economy serve?

why are professions limited in terms of weapons, buttons, skills and customization (ouside of gear)?

Ah, I get it.

You don’t want to buy gems.

So…don’t?

As long there’s a way for me to disallow duel requests when I don’t feel like dueling, then sure. One thing that I can’t stand is someone spamming duel-requests. I get it! You want to show some people how big your e-wang is. Personally, I really don’t give a skritt.

Agreed, that drives me nuts, too.

Guardian and warriors are all you need.

Nice they noticed……

Just a thing…
If you look the interview you see them discussing how some classes are strong somewhere and bleeds in other game modes…

I m not english native speaker so i can t get what does “bleed” means in that sentence…could anybody help?

I AM an English native speaker and I didn’t understand what he meant, either, so don’t feel bad.

As it stands now the current strategery is “just run, don’t fight.”

GW2 isn’t the only game with this problem. Trash mobs are trash mobs, if you can run past them, usually people will. If mobs held aggro longer/further, you would see this kind of thing disappear.

GW2 is the only one I know of that has dungeon trash mobs on leashes.

Avoiding agro of mobs is one thing. I love having to sneak around mobs and we always had fun giving grief to guildies who accidentally pull mobs.

But just outright running through them and hoping you don’t die knowing they will eventually give up is another.

We have no trinity but still have bucket-o-hp mobs designed for a trinity system. Re-tooling AI would go a long way.

Agreed.

This would be a decent opportunity for tweaking. While we do have a soft trinity, (damage, control, support) it would be interesting to see all those mobs gathered up by the control and support guys in the group, while the damage group does their part in taking them down.

As it stands now the current strategery is “just run, don’t fight.”

Very well-stated, OP.

I told a friend of mine it would be kind of fun to be able to bring a GW2 character into a heroic WoW dungeon and see how different the playstyle would be.
