(edited by Slalom.3174)
My shortbow ranger stays in WvW.
The build is Condition/Healing/Toughness/Vitality so Crit chance is ~27%.
Kills take a bit longer, but my survivability is nice. I don’t want to raise Precision at the expense of Healing or Toughness.
The character is not maintaining an adequate stack of bleeds (imo).
(What’s “adequate”? Hehe, I don’t know that either, but figured 10-12 would be good with my low crit chance %).
Food used (Rare Veggie Pizza) gives 40% condition duration.
I am wondering whether a Sigil of Agony (10% Bleed Duration) or Sigil of Earth (60% chance of Bleed on Crit) would yield better results? Your opinions?
Any other ideas for raising bleeds?
Note: The alternate weapon set varies depending on current activity (axe/warhorn, longbow, greatsword, sword/torch).
Here’s the build btw:

A totally irrelevant reply, but still…
Has it really been 10 years! Where has the time gone!
Started DAoC in November, 2001. It is hard to believe it was so long ago.
Thanks for the memories.
Use http://gw2buildcraft/calculator/ranger/ to construct your build(s).
Theorize and tweak to your heart’s content before you spend any gold/karma/badges/etc.
Personally for WvW I like a solid health pool of vitality and toughness. Throw in Healing Power you can find your Happy Spot on the survivability vs damage scale.
In a zerg, consider changing your pet to a ranged pet (spider/devourer). Just a thought.
Melee pets can die quickly if not managed and swapped quickly.
As I said before, this is not my final solution. It is just where it stands at the moment. I am always open to suggestions.
Pets…
I use hyena, drakehound, bears, drake, spiders… get the picture. hehe
Whenever the mood strikes, I change up pets.
I agree on polar bear and brown bear removes conditions.
http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/ranger/
^^ A great site for theorycrafting your own build. Tweak it to your heart’s content before buying the first piece of gear.
Remember, in GW2, there is no “I win all the time” solution which is as it should be.
note: My initial gear was Rampager which was just fine for open world PVE leveling and farming. Dungeons may be different. It does not work for me in WvW (which you are not interested in, hehe).
There’s your two opposing views —> @Cempa and @No Walking (cheers to both).
I just yesterday finished a Condition/Healing setup having strong Toughness/Vitality attributes. For me roaming solo, in small group and in zerg, it worked just fine.
With Power/Precision build, I am not quick enough to avoid focus lockdowns and my health pool was too low. I wanted something that let me survive my mistakes and clumsiness (like my power necro). So giving up a bit of front-load damage for bleed stacking, slows and survivability seems to work for me.
It is not yet ideal, but here’s some of the current stats:
Power - 1111
Precision – 1396
Toughness – 1690
Vitality - 1411
Critical Damage + - 0
Condition Damage + - 1027
Condition Duration - 40
Healing Power - 1045
Boon Duration - 25
Critical Chance - 26.86
Damage - 5
Armor - 2754
Health - 20032
Endurance Regeneration + – 50
Agony Resistance – 0
Pet Attribute Bonus – 300
Damage & Survivability
Effective Power – 1322.61
Effective Health (EHP) -30048
Damage Reduction – 33.33
Reference Armor - 1836
Shortbow/axe+worhorn. Lots of tweaking still to do, but it was fun.
But then so is heavy DPS.
Your toon – your choice.
Good luck.
It’s your fault, TCBL!
You made me 6 hours late for breakfast.
Got so involved in ‘OK Team’-ing, I had to jump to FABL to sober up.
Still too mumbly for Mumble so will say, “Good morning, TC, and well done!” here.
And KN,
I love you guys… tried not to spoil you with WxP last night but you kept taking and taking and…
Give it a few hours and we will go again (up-leveled Ele this time to make it fair, hehe).
The attached is all I want… dyable, of course.
Nothing fancy, frilly or with doodads.
Thanks, folks, for letting me know I may not be totally alone. :-)
Necros don’t wear pants! imo.
Thanks, your attempt to make me feel better is appreciated.
@DelOnasi.6051,
I like your short answer, especially for WvW sieges.
My necro uses dagger/focus and staff.
Scepter/dagger or Axe/dagger are fun in PvE options. Necros are just a Hoot to play because they have such variety.
Please, ANet, give my necromancer a plain hooded, monk-like robe — single color, unadorned, no frills, no sexy peeky holes, no chains, no straps, no buckles and no studs.
Put it on the TP and I will buy it for real dollars.
Leave the fru-fru get-ups for the eles and mesmers. The Lords of the Undead need properly somber attire.
Thank you.
@Anchoku.8142,
If I could sticky your comments I would. An excellent explanation.
WvW is the ultimate game for me and necro is my favorite character to play. The lack of mobility and escape means no running from fights, finding solutions and finding the best way to support your server’s success.
Keep assault and defense and open-field zerg battles come to mind. And, oooooo! , the carpet of loot bags is nice too.
Experiment… you will find your favorite builds. Playstyle seems to vary with each one.
Good luck and enjoy.
Thanks guys.
Good thoughts.
Let’s see how if all ends. :-)
ok, WvW rangers, a quick opinion please…
Option1 —> 68% crit chance+66% crit damage
vs
Option2 —> 50% crit chance vs 85% crit damage
Power is nearly the same on both (2100).
Damage Reduction is similar (34%).
Armor is around 2750 on both.
Option 2 has 2000 more health.
Using shortbow mainly is 50% good enough? I have always found it so in PvE.
I am working on a WvW-specific support elementalist. Probably staff. Definitely group-oriented defense and siege.
Please give your exp/ideas for minimum level stats needed in WvW groups.
Power
Precision
Toughness
Armor
Vitality
Health Pool
Healing Power
Boon Duration
Other
Particularly wondering how power and heal power are needed versus toughness and vitality/health.
Thanks
A friend convinced me to take up my baby ele as a strictly WvW toon. Yes, that is not your plan, but I just want to suggest you look at:
http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/elementalist/
That site has both pvp AND pve gear and upgrades. You can theorycraft and tweak to your heart’s content.
When done just click the Get Link button at the bottom of the page. Cut and paste the displayed link and save it for future recall.
Can you tell that I like this site? Pretty cool!
I feel that lose also, though I admit not having your longer term experience. The discouragement has not outweighed “taking one for the team”. Unhappily my pocketbook will likely run out before my sentry enjoyment does (Ain’t that always the way of things?).
You are not alone out there. I noticed several dedicated sentries this weekend. Without your effort our server would not have the success we enjoy.
Maybe ANet will recall their Milton…
“They also serve who only stand and wait.”
I am using http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/necromancer/ and your idea of using Curses IX (Focused Rituals) to modify my tank build.
When sieging are you able to drop wells onto walls? I can get marks there without a problem (range 1200), but ’twould be fun to drop wells there also (range 900).
@Daylight
Hmm, looking at how to include Curses IX (Focused Rituals), how would this work?
I might just try this today. Thanks for the idea.
Spite (20) — 2,7
Curses (20) — 4,9
Death magic (20) — 2,5
Blood magic (10) — 1,
Soul Reaping (0)
Check this forum’s stickies for Nemesis’ Abomination (tank) build with link to Sheobix’s Juggermancer.
Having little satisfaction with condition or hybrids in WvW (go figure), I keep coming back to a tank build. Very useful spreading Plague and dropping wells/marks in the middle of the foe zerg.
Here is a synopsis (I hope it makes sense):
Armor
PVT with runes of Vampirism (Sheobix recommends Soldier Crests, but the extra power from Vamp is nice and that Mist form is fun and has saved me several times).
Weapons
PVT dagger with Leeching
PVT focus with Restoration
PVT staff with Leeching
Traits
(The options reflect Nemesis vs Sheobix)
Spite (15) 2,8 or (25) 2,8
Curses ( 0)
Death magic (25) 2,4 or (25) 2,5
Blood magic (30) 2,8,12 or (20) 2,1
Soul Reaping (0)
Note: Ground Targeted Wells (IX) requires 20 points in Curses. What are you going to give up to get them?
Heal
Consume Conditions
Utils
Well of Suffering
Well of Corruption
(switch based on mood) Epidemic, Well of Darkness, Spectral Walk, Signet of Locust
Elite
Plague or Lich
Buffs
Loaves of Omnomberry Bread (or) Plates of Orrian Steak Fritter s
Hardened Sharpening Stones
I started with the Temple Karma armor and trinkets, then got the WvW Invader legs and weapons. Now I am slowly getting Ascended trinkets.
sidenote My new love is http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/necromancer/ for theorycrafting builds; it includes pve gear!! Woot!
Ascii,
Thanks so much for the link to gw2buildcraft.com .
That site is just the thing when contemplating and comparing builds. The numbers seem to be a little bit off when I load my current power build, but still useful.
Two tank builds (first a variation of the second):
Nemesis ? https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/necromancer/The-Abomination-necromancer-tank-build
Sheobix ? https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/necromancer/Juggermancer-Final-Blog-Link
Of course, these do not apply if you intend to keep your minions.
Good luck.
Refer to this forum’s stickies, in particular this one… https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/necromancer/Necromancer-tutorials/first
Nemesis covers the class philosophy very well and offers sample builds that are viable in various scenarios.
His tank build using Power/Vitality/Toughness (PVT) gear is my current favorite even though I don’t kill mobs as fast as with other builds. What’s nice is the survivability.
I do not have the full set yet so I expect still higher stats, butt currently they sit at:
Power 2577
Attack 3688
Toughness 1817
Armor 2737
Vitality 1857
Health 27,782
in Plague form 46,000+
When complete, he will have Power in excess of 3000 and Health above 30000 pre-buff.
on Monthly Achievements.
Well done! Thanks again.
Lopez did a lot of research into the relationship between Precision and Condition Damage.
You might look at some of his Necro forum postings here —> https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/necromancer/Massive-Guides-for-Condition-Necromancer-1/first#post1485969
His PvE build works well for me running around solo.
Well, gentlemen, you advice convinced me to spend the gold and give it a try.
And… it worked!
I was agonizing over nuthin’!
Thanks a lot. (+1 to you both )
Okay, here’s my dilemma…
My guardian belongs to the Priory Order.
My necro belongs to the Order of Whispers.
I would like to equip Priory armor on my necro.
If my guardian buys Priory light armor it will be soulbound to him.
Because he cannot equip light armor, he won’t be able to transmute it to a white Account-bound piece.
Because the gear will be soulbound to my guardian, my necro would not be able to transmute it.
I know no way to transfer my necro from one Order to another.
Seems I am stuck wanting what I can’t have. Aargh!
Hence my dilemma.
I know of no solution or workaround.
If you do, please share… if not, thanks anyway.
As Dasorine and IndigoSundown have said, different dyes have different results/effects on different items.
Below is my Necro’s Magic Find gear using Brick, Midnight Gold, Bronze and Calfskin.
Not a bad red/black-ish result on my monitor.
Good luck finding what works for you.
I like the gunslinger loo, I guess.
Two of my characters have it atm.
Your results will vary…
I agree with folks so far. Some classes are easier to play at low levels; others are not. IMO, focus on surviving, exploring and learning game mechanics with your first couple characters.
My first character was an Asuran guardian. The animations, dialogue and story were entertaining. Leveling and surviving was easy and fast.
Just for grins I did a little weapon testing for you.
Continuous auto-attacks(#1 skill) using berserker weapons against lvl 80 white moas yield damage values of:
staff ranged 1/2 second cast time 500
mace melee 1/2 – 1 second cast time 600-1000
2h sword melee 1/2 second cast time 650-1000
scepter ranged 1/4 second cast time 500
hammer melee 1/2 -1.25 second cast time 650-850
Scepter may have lower per hit damage, but the auto-attack fires twice as fast as other attacks. I use it for mindless attacks during dragon attacks.
So I guess the answer is , “No”.
Thanks for the help.
Is there an another light armor that shares the same skin as the Temple sets?
My Daily Whine
Why isn’t there a single unadorned, plain robe instead of sets with frills and doodads? sigh
Take a look at Dulfy.net
They have galleries of various weapons (staves, daggers, scepters).
Nice pics and acquisition information as well as Preview Codes.
I just learned that Dulfy.net has posted a Dagger Gallery. WOOT!
http://dulfy.net/2013/03/11/gw2-dagger-gallery/
No one does as good a presentation of imagers and data as Dulfy (imo).
(edited by Slalom.3174)
Thanks, Rouven!
I have been waiting so long for that gallery. No one does it as well as Dulfey (imo).
Player.8373,
My necro is using the Centurion’s Claw fr om HoM.
This item shares the same skin as “the Sickle” which is a PvP sword and has a TP entry. There are none for sale at the moment though.
Another option is the crafted level 80 Krait Ripper dagger. Similar, but not the same.
I just learned that Duley.net has added a Daggers Gallery! Woot!
http://dulfy.net/2013/03/11/gw2-dagger-gallery/
(edited by Slalom.3174)
WvW Invader legs have the same stats.
My necro has the Centurion’s Claws (HoM reward) paired with Infinite Wisdom [&AgGGaQAA]. They have matching color schemes.
Displaying the Crossing at the Shatterer event. Full Temple karma armor.
Thank you for not requiring WvW or dungeons in the March Monthly Achievements.
I missed February’s reward because I do not do dungeons.
Now… if you can give us a selection like you have applied to Dailies.
Well Done.
Good luck finding what you are looking for.
Necro does NOT have to use minions, Your statement that you don’t like minions might indicate that you have not researched the game and class options.
All the other posters gave good information (imo).
So, keep looking either in GW2 or elsewhere.
Again, Good Luck.
think Austin Powers.
SvemoguciBor,
So the point of your post is to complain that the game isn’t what you want.
You aren’t interested in the history and lore that drives and directs the game world?
Scepter usually means Condition.
And your utilities bear that out.
There’s different opinions out there. Read forum threads by Nemesis and Lopez (both well-experienced necros) for ideas regarding gear and builds. And whenever they post, other folks will agree or offer helpful alternatives.
Arguments out and about say that Condition builds are based on:
Carrion (Condition Dmg/Power/Vitality),
Rampager (Precision/Condition Dmg/Power)
or Rabid ( Condition Dmg/Precsion/Toughness).
Take your choice. Your can build any of them.
As leman said, “There is no main attribute”. The attribute yiu choose depend on the build that you are currently employing.
For instance a Power build would focus on Power, Vitality and Toughness
A Condition build might focus on Condition Damage, Precision and Toughness.
As you level try various builds and weapon sets to see what works best for you for the type of game you wish to play.
There is no best build for everyone…
Also read/watch the tutorial stickies in this forum. There are full of good information that you can adoprt and adapt to your preference.
