1I recommend having at least one “kit” as a utility skill like flamethrower because there are a few useful traits that revolve around it like swiftness for a period of time when switching to a kit or increased toughness when switching to flamethrower. I also recommend one escape skill if you’re a WvW’er like Elixir S or Rocket Boots.
In the same boat as the OP.
I run solo around Silverwastes capping/defending and digging up chests and killing anything in the way. I have FT slotted (for swiftness via Streamlined Kits), but find it lackluster compared to my P+P damage. The P+P damage is not bursty, but those plant-mobs just melt with those conditions.
So the thing I am wondering is whether other engineers find the swapping of kits is “always” the most efficient and effective way to work through some content.
In PvE a Longbow ranger can get lazy relying on the pet to take agro. The ranger can sit back a pew-pew from long range and safety.
That is a bad habit to develop.
In WvW or PvP your opponents won’t focus on your pet. They will close distance to you in a flash. Then your longbow damage will be ineffective.
You will need to switch to melee for dps, mobility and survivability.
The same thing applies to PvE with multiple mobs in higher level content. Silverwaste outpost defense comes to mind.
Btw, I love my 5 rangers.. They are habit-forming, but lovable.
Most have melee and range options. One is strictly melee (a beast in the right situation).
Good luck and enjoy
The best place to start if here:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats
All gear is listed/linked.
No one yet mentioned WvW and Karma gear. Neither can be salvaged or Mystic Forged, so any runes applied are there permanently. But they might be the easiest to get and least cost ( 5g44s+ 950 badges or 242k karma).
Good Luck!
What Wiser said.
Both have their styles. You can research, experiment and practice to find your favorite.
I like the build variety with Ranger from Open PVE pew-pew god (armchair mode) to trapper to front-line melee. And more.
There is a third Adventurer profession — Engineer. Don’t overlook that guy.
It really comes down to what you like best; what feels best to you.
Doesn’t seem to be in Vigil Keep now. That hylek has been moved twice before. Maybe he is back in Lion’s Arch?
Looked around a bit near Trader’s Forum in L.A. No sighting.
On your runes, I don’t see where you are applying Might so why extend Might duration? Maybe something like Krait runes that add/extend Bleeding would be more helpful?
Also Health and Armor seem a bit low, but I am still learning about Engineers.
If you wanted to adjust those upward, you’d have to give up Crit %, Power and/or Cond. Dmg. For general PVE I suppose it doesn’t matter having lower survivability stats?
Also, maybe Oil instead of Crystal utility to increase crit chance?
How much Cond. Dmg is needed before diminishing return?
That’s a questions I asked yesterday, but have no answer.
@MattressDrake,
We are both confused (see my post just a few minutes ago).
It may still be too soon to tell.
Hope you find what you are looking for.
For a WvW roaming condition build…
What should be the minimum level of these stats:
- Condition Damage (700?)
- Critical Chance (40%?)
- Power (1100?)
Thanks.
It’s not the same, I got nothing I want in tools
I feel the same. So slow in WvW.
Can’t keep with group.
Running Explosives, Alchemy, Inventions … Tools just don’t qualify.
note: Just whining because I haven’t adjusted or found a workaround.
I am on TC also.
I have 3 characters in some stage of world exploration.
If you need some help just message me in game. As long as it is not between 8 and 9pm Eastern I can lend a hand. (dailies from 8-9 every day, doncha know. )
had the same problem when trying to get into the Blackgate server. Tried at 6:00 am Eastern on a Sunday morning. Voila! in with no problem.
That is not a guarantee. It will be tough anytime.
I wish you good luck though. Keep trying.
Influence can be spent until HoT is released according to the Blog posts I read yesterday.
I have 2 more tiers to finish my guild upgrades so will have to scramble up enough influence and get them in the queue. They take a week or more to build, iir.
Buy now and you get the Maguuma Trailblazer title. Woot!
Sporting mine while walking my pet rock ’round Rata Sum
Resurrecting this thread after I as ignored in-game sniff/whine/cry
I saw a character with a mini Jaguar cub having the name “Hell No Kitty” and the guild tag.
/W’d the player how they named the mini, but they ignored me.
So any ideas how they did it?
And yea, shoulda got a screenshot or it didn’t happen. Will l try to fix that.
@Arioso.8519,
I am very hyped about Guild Halls coming. My social guild will benefit greatly but Yes, I think small guilds will have challenge. Further I wonder about all those players that have single member guilds (yes, I know… why! so antisocial! But they have their purpose).
Currently single member guilds can be used for additional storage and wvw upgrades. Not much else (not missions, puzzles, etc.)
I wonder what guild halls offer those folks:
- Private dueling
- WvW crafting
- Area to practice gliding
Hard to imagine
I would say go longbow. sword does require lot of attention ….
With longbow you pick your fights and have far greater control, and less stress both on nerves and your hand.
Yes, longbow+bear
Hint: If you are clumsy like me, don’t use sword when dueling around EotM. So many cliffs. Ackk!
Look into getting a gaming mouse like a naga or logitech g600. You’ll have enough buttons to map just about everything to it.
Love the G600; it is holding up well to abuse, drops, re-mapping. Tossed out my Naga.
@Ozuee, the options are:
- Represent – active member with guild name displayed and has vault access
- Stand Down – active member, but guild name is not shown and no vault access
- Leave Guild – not in guild
As long as at least one character is in Represent or Stand Down, the guild while be active.
After 2+ years I still use this link to pick up pets.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/List_of_pet_locations
Try it while in-game by typing “/wiki list of pet locations” without the quotes.
Good luck and holler if you need any more Ranger help.
“Follow the Money” quoth the guru.
Please be so kind and buy a character slot so it goes into sale next week!
I’m waiting for a sale way too long.
I have tired of waiting and started deleting level 80s.
sigh I need a life. :/
If you have played other mmorpgs, you will find quite a difference between those and GW2.
I bet you will like the dynamic events, as you “hot join” them as you approach their vicinity. Then there’s heart quests, exploring, gathering, crafting — all help with leveling.
And that does even touch on the pvp/wvw portion s of the game.
Or dungeons (starting at level 25).
If you are looking for the social aspect of the game, maybe joining an active social guild would be best.
If you have other reasons for grouping, you might list them. This community is good at making suggestions.
Good luck and welcome to Tyria.
I bet you are already well on your way, but I will chime in anyway.
My next character will be a Charr ranger.
Will use a Experience Scroll to bump to level 20 then do Map exploration until level 40-50.
Then Personal Story.
Finally, finish up with the rest of Map Explore.
Lots of gathering, salvaging, events, hearts, and Open World stuff.
So no speed level on this one (been there and done that).
Haven’t decided a playstyle yet. Probably melee.
Sword+Warhorn maybe. Seems kinds Charr-ish
I am not in a big hurry, but when I get started I stay focused.
Feel free to message me in-game if you want to discuss getting started.
Afternoons EST (UTC-5) is when I will be playing this guy except when Ready_Up, POI, or @Aurora_Peachy is on Twitch.
@Zexanima
Your best bet is to check the Wiki to gain an understanding of each Profession. Then check the various Profession forums and Reddit.
Each has many discussions regarding the upcoming changes.
Most times you will find that asking questions in those forums will get helpful responses.
Good luck to you.
Fluffball,
Thanks. That is a good point (Seeing over tower walls and such).
Wonder how to test that (Any JQ or BG wanna play pew-pew fodder? Nah, didn’t think so. haha).
@Aerathnor,
Yes, I did that on my Human, Asura and Sylvari rangers.
Am wondering if there is any benefit to go Max height that I am not seeing.
Thanks.
FYI,
My new Norn ranger is midway between Max and Min Heights.
He seems so large and clutzy sometimes, but am getting used to him.
He is playing a full melee style and only lvl 42 atm.
I am starting my 5th ranger shortly and have a question bothering me a bit.
For Charr Rangers, please give me your opinions regarding playability, mobility, situational benefits, etc. of:
- Maximum Height
- Minimum Height
Forget about Jumping Puzzles. I have Asura and Sylvari for those.
Thank you all for the reminder.
My first character’s /age
I agree with Jim entirely.
Am deleting other lvl 80 professions to make room for more Rangers.
Just started my 4th Ranger. Making a melee-only Norn this time. Having a time adjusting from faster Asura, Sylvari and Human animations.
Here is what the Arcane outfit looks like, after a dye-job, of course. .
So I have decided to make a 4th Ranger (Norn this time) which will become a Druid.
Looking through all the armor skins, I didn’t find any that really look right(according to what I have in mind :/ ).
The Arcane outfit (not armor) is about as robe-like as I can find, but that wide skirt I don’t like.
Color scheme – green, gold, brown
What are you all thinking for your fashion design?
EDIT: Maybe something can be done with the Stag Helm (Gem Store)
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Stag_Helm_Skin .
Too bad that the Heavy T3 helm has a “proper” druidic style. Should be medium!

I read someplace that after tomorrow’s POI we can expect 2 weeks break from Specialization previews as other HOT features are discussed.
Sooo, fire up the barbeque. Roasted Dondagora.9645 on the spit!
Not having much artistic/creative skill, I always check:
to kickstart my characters’ gear.
I couldn’t help thinking “if you’re that afraid of melee don’t play a warrior”.
All too funny and true. Thanks, Lazuli.
Warriors and Guardians both have knockbacks and use them often. Of course, then they yell, “Rangers, stop the KBs. L2P!” Lol, too funny.
ANET’s and the community’s preferred classes in competitive play are GWEN (Guardian, Elementalist, Warrior, Necromancer).
If you want to be cookie-cutter, choose one of those.
Many players have out-of-date opinions about professions. The Ranger does have issues (mostly around pet AI and control), but there are a wide variety of versatile builds effective in all game environments. Just don’t lock into the LB+GS bear mode.
Finally, good luck and welcome to GW2. Enjoy the game.
I have been having similar questions.
Someone gave some helpful advice. At least I find it helpful.
Because damask is so costly, stick to acquiring ascended trinkets and weapons.
Use exotic armor instead.
And the way I change builds around, replacing runes in ascended armor already gets expensive. With exotic I can just salvage, recover runes (and other mats) and make a new set.
If Druid is next, then it will be on POI.
That will be a good thing.
well, Jungle Stalker is here:
Caledon Forest / Sandycove Beach / South of Bay Haven on the side of the road
Good luck.
Am back to SW then.
Heading out there right now! hehe
Standing beside 3 of them right now. lol.
Group me in game; I will wait around and kill raptors for a bit.
Heading out there right now! hehe
I used to refer to this list in the wiki:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/List_of_pet_locations
Jaguar
Brisban Wildlands / The Shattered Henge / Northwest of Scholar Issa Farone
Just For Fun, what is your guess for the presentation order of the Specializations?
So far we have seen the Mesmer and ANET Devs’ favorite, Guardian.
What is next and then after that?
- Elementalist (The gods demand their due)
- Warrior (To feed the bloodthirsty)
- Thief (For the sneaky – Look I can fly)
- Necromancer (Well, why not now?)
- Engineer (Later only because the ASA presentation was Powerpoint-only).
- Ranger (Just ’cause they have to)
- Revenant will be last… obviously.
I do hope that the Druid spec is not presented on Ready Up (not to point fingers or anything).
The preceding is all tongue-in-cheek so no one pop a gasket
Problem #2:
How are you going to keep away all the other players that want a piece of her?
Here is the YouTube video:
Well-deserved punishment for any cheater.
Character Slot for Heart of Thorns? [Merged]
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I am prepping 5 characters for deletion so will have plenty of room for new stuff. ;

Something pinkish.. too bad there aren’t many skins like that from what I’ve seen. been considering this one, but it might be a bit too… gnarled?
Maybe this one? Nice pinkish light effect, though still, err, rustic.
http://dulfy.net/2012/11/13/gw2-staff-skin-gallery/#37
6 gods, 6 dragons, 6 specializations we don’t know about yet.
6×6×6 is 216.
2+1+6=9.
9-6(gods/dragons/specializations we don’t know about) = 3.
12(months)-5(May)=7.
7+3=10.
HoT is released in October.
The best guess I have seen.
From a Ranger to boot!
Or maybe make a PvP like panel with 3 options to join: green, red and blue. Number of current players listed on each color and you are only allowed to join on the color with the lowest number of players. Take away any advantage given to green.
I like your solution. Certainly doable.
What about groups? A person already grouped would have to be auto-kicked when he chooses his color.
Overall, a good solution for k-training or leveling players IMN2BHO. It would step on guild-group efforts though.
Anyway, just pipe-dreams
Plot twist: Druid’s staff will work like guardian’s and will have meditation utilities
so you can play as guardian with your ranger while guardians can play as a ranger.
So, just to get it straight, Druids will be desirable in dungeon groups and Dragonhunters will be auto-kicked?
j/k.
I have decided to dust off my Sylvari trap ranger and give her the Mordrem staff.
Seems to go well with the T2 armor.
Will have to adjust her dye scheme a bit.
