here is my engie, Vel Chromebone,
Say hi when you see me….
Absolutely awesome! Almost made a Char just after seing your post.
Here is my second engineer. Only lvl 2, but already ready to blow stuff up!
It depends on what you do when you are in WvW. If you’re in a zerg (but I don’t think you are on a celestial engi), then Toughness. If you roam and duel/1vX, go with Vitality. You already eat thieves and media guard, so you don’t need that extra toughness.
Lol you see much more engis than medi guards. From the cele classes engi was the least affected by might+sigil of battle nerf.
True. It also means that it’s the class which is the most hybrid by nature. You can play cele engi without might, because it is good in itself, which is how it should be. Engineer is also the only one of these three builds that is so weak against conditions.
If he wants to duel you, play a cheese condi build! Engineers are weak to conditions, so you should be fine. Don’t forget to take the trait for condi cleanse on stealth, and confusion on Steal: a confused engi kills himself, especially if you land your condition just after he used his turret.
On d/p, your only chance is to NEVER get hit by Overcharged Shot. So try to use your #3 skill when he switches to rifle, and to be constantly jumping behind his back. But you’ll probably lose if your skill level i similar (unless you are both noobs, then the thief always have the advantage).
Lol I actually agree with Slick Shoes nerf! That skill is pretty overpowdered! The single strongest lockdown ability in the game combined with one of the shortest stunbreak cooldown duration in the game that also refreshes at low health! Yeah pretty overpowdered! But the rest of the things on the list are lolz! And I’m surprised Overcharged Shot isn’t on that list! That skill single-handedly carries cele Engis!
Wahoo! Bye frands!
I’m disappointed in you Vee Wee! Slick Shoes has now become the only gadget we can use at a competitive level. What happened to #gadgetmeta?
The stun break is short CD because of the 4 points in the last trait line in the meta build. It’s just a bit shorter than EG stun breaker, and EG comes with a lot of other defensive abilities, and none complains about it. At least half the engineers I run into still run Elixir S. If it was truly that good, every one would run it, like Shadow Refuge on thief or Blink on mesmer.
Slick Shoes is more of a problem now for some people because bunker guardians are an endangered species, and even warriors don’t run stability anymore. So of course the CC abilities are strong in that environment. It’s not OP, it fits the meta well.
6) if all above fails,
Give up the point, hug and make love to a pillar, then come back 20s later and see how long bunker zerker necro holds a point.
This. These pillars deserve more love. You gotta embrace the pillar, and never let go.
On a serious note, make tests to find which of your skills hit through pillars, and overuse them against loch necros.
It’s difficult to estimate. One thing is certain, it gets easier after the first two professions you master. For your first profession, I think you’ll start to feel good after 200-300 matches, but after that it diminishes for every new profession you play.
And because you don’t want to spend all your time in practice and should go in unranked as soon as you’re comfortable with your build, here is an excellent video a top player made on rotation. I made my entire guild watch it, and you can really improve a lot by following this basic advice.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvPb2jY19oU&spfreload=10
Good luck and welcome to the Mists!
Note: shoulder pieces and headgear do not influence your stats in pvp, but if you want to have them anyway to customize your character, you can buy them for under 200 karma in any WvW map spawn.
Nobody wants to upload fail videos. But you can watch streams though.
MMORPGs are traditionally a genre which is more about time investment than being skilled, so I dont get this whole “I dont have much time because I have family, work etc”.
The key word in this sentence is “traditionally”. The Manifesto was written to state that GW2 was not a “traditional” MMO. Mike O’Brien, when announcing HoT, stated once again that GW2 was not about time investment. Although this principle is not always strictly respected, it’s the main philosophy behind the game.
However, I’m going to agree with you. The proof that you speak the truth is all these dungeon speed-runners, SW farmers, gold grinders you find in the game. Some people, like Sebastian, like it that way and that’s fine. But don’t come here and pretend you want more “challenging” content, when all you really want is more time-consuming grind to rise above the crowd. Challenging content is skill-based.
I defeated Liadri with a life-stealing thief without throwing a single orb.
Which was an exploit which was quickly fixed as soon as it become known to the common public. You should feel ashamed.
Well, it worked without third party software, using in-game abilities, and no other player suffered from it, so no I don’t see anything wrong with it (unless you feel sorry for Liadri of course). When it was fixed (it needed to be, I agree), players found other ways, other builds. A quick YouTube search will give you plenty of builds with which you could defeat Liadri in just over a minute. Players always find a way.
Hello, SD thief main here. It’s not too difficult a match-up, if you think about it. If you want to beat us, you must:
- Not play berserker. No Fresh Air S/D,S/F eles. You’ll lose every time.
- Time your skills to hit during the rare moments the thief is vulnerable, that is in the end of their Sw3 animation, just after they port with their Sw2 skill, if you see a CnD animation, or just after a dodge.
- Use AoE and cleave. If you use d/d, fire #4, fire #2, water #2 will deal the most damage to the thief, and he’ll be forced to retreat with Sw2 to cleanse.
- Take the trait Evasive Arcana if you can. When they try to burst, just evade over their head and they’ll drop.
- Slot Mistform or Arcane Shield to mitigate heavy bursts. Cleansing fire is an overkill for just poison, immob and sometimes vulnerability
- Run dagger offhand over focus. No need for these reflects, the CC of the dagger is better.
- Run a sigil of doom. Cover it with other condis and watch the thief waste his healing skill every time.
- Keep pressuring them at all time. Play extremely agressive. You’ll take a few bad hits in the beginning, but they will quickly be forced to disengage.
- Remember that your best skill is Shocking Aura.
Good luck!
I have a friend who’s a good warrior, and a combination that works well is celestial engineer and GS warrior (or any kind of warrior that deals damage really). If you play shouts, you can additionally compensate for the poor condi cleanse capacities of your partner. Condi bomb/tool engi works fine also, especially in WvW.
Step 1: buff ferocity
No, please don’t buff cele.
Legitimate concern. If Ferocity gets a 15%, for example, all celestial stats on the celestial amulet should be reduced by 2%. I’m not even sure we would notice the difference, but yeah why not. It would especially be a buff to berserker amulet and valkyrie amulet. We rarely see the later in use these days.
Step 1: buff ferocity
Step 2: nerf air and fire sigil
There, fixed it for you. And please, PLEASE let it be in that order. Berzerker builds are the only fun builds. I hope they won’t get nerfed to the ground because some cele baddies’ reflexes are too slow.
Is it a good or bad thing that I have never heard of these users before?
A good thing! It means you don’t waste your time on the forums like I do! I can only speak about the pvp forums, but Wolfey and The Gates Assassin have been sufficiently active and measured in their opinions (no ranger OP nerf, no solo vs premade nonsense) to qualify for the job. Congrats!
Is there some new infos on the revenant that I’m missing somehow?
I have bad days too. On these days, I miss IAs, I get killed for no reasons, and can’t get a decap. When it happens I usually switch to my engi or my warrior. Thief is one of the most difficult profession to play in pvp, so you should only play it when you’re feeling confident. Also, I sometimes get a 0.5s lag on every skill, and on these days I play warrior. If it gets even worse, I play spirit ranger.
Favorite shoulders
There’s no way to get these shoulders now, right? Thank you for making me jealous!
I don’t see how point one or two have to do with anything quoted o_o i’m not sure if you quoted the wrong person or not :P
You’re right! Sorry I read your comment too fast, I thought you wrote that you didn’t like to focus on objectives at all and just kill players, and I saw you quote DM and didn’t read any further, my bad. So I wrote about objective-free pvp in GW2, which was completely off topic, forgive me.
You know, i’m playing dily, without “rushing” magic find. Just salvaging my loots and sometime salvaging ecto to upgrade T5 at the mystic toilets. I didn’t take advantage of events like Halloween and hivernel that could have given me tons of luck. But I’m still reaching already 266%.
So, Yeah i could understand the concern of the op.
I see, thank you for sharing your experience. I had no idea you could naturally climb this high. However, you still have a very specific profile: you play daily and for a long time now, in PvE. The whole idea behind GW2 horizontal progression is that you can quit playing and come back whenever you want without feeling left behind. I’m sure the 300% threshold was added to prevent the prices to explode. Granted no one knows how MF works and how much better the loot is, but I’d rather not take the risk. Sure, you could perfectly argue that hardcore players should have a significant advantage in term of loot over casuals, but that’s just not the philosophy of the game.
Sorel, you can preview the backpack to see if it fits your own Asura ;-)
If it’s not on the bank wardrobe, just use the preview option from the trading post.
Yup, will definitely try, thanks.
Oooooooh I’m so sad, I was considering getting it for my asura. Is your asura really tall in asuran standards?
Initiative will stay. It’s the core mechanic of the thief, so it’s not likely to change.
Steal however, is likely to be replaced by another mechanic. Some traits (Mug, Improvisation, more range on Steal) would become useless, but it wouldn’t be that bad, and the last trait line would be integrally replaced.
My speculation: a specialization called the Assassin, who would get a rifle and instead of steal, have a weapon-based F1, just like warriors, except it would be a skill you can only use while out of combat. To ease things, we could imagine a F2 skill that would be a long stealth (smith like 10s) that can only be used out of combat. Let’s say we only get the F1.
Examples of possible out of combat skills:
Rifle: 1500 range sniper shot. Even 2000 range if it uses ground targeting
SD: A slow-moving, wide-area smoke-bomb that grants stealth to allies and blind foes. Very useful when arriving in a team fight where a team mate is downed, or to cast one of your other F1 skills
Pistol: a 900-range stun or daze
Dagger: a teleport after which you appear jumping and planting your dagger in your foe’s throat. Doesn’t matter what the skill does really, I just want that cool animation!
Sword: A 900-range leap, to have sword become a weapon you can consider taking over SB for it’s mobility. Could help for our fellow JP lovers too!
Ritualists confirmed!
What? Is this real? Hobo sacks are cool! That’s one of the reason I made an engineer in the first place! If you guys are really annoyed by them, I have a few suggestion for what can be done to fix them:
1) Almost mandatory: make bomb kit and tool kit different from each other!
2) Add attunements-like icons and add an option to hide backpacks. Frankly, good engineers switch kits so fast that I’m not sure you’d get a lot of counter play by adding them but whatever.
3) Let us buy cultural backpack skins for gold or karma! I’m not too confident on that one because Anet probably doesn’t want to offer a profession-exclusive feature. But engineers have almost no weapon customization choices so it would be fair imo.
To those willing to hide backpacks: what about the flamethrower? A graphic designer worked hard to create the coolest looking weapon kit in the game and you want to get rid of it? If they add this “hide backpack” feature, I hope they nerf the FT for those who chose to hide it, because it can’t perform well without a tank.
As stated above, you can’t really reach 300% magic find playing normally. You have to think about new players! How unfair would it be to have TP prices set by veterans who have 600% MF when these new players only have like 50%? Inflation in this game is already quite bad as it is, thanks to grinders (but that’s a problem in every MMO I guess).
I personally welcome this game mode and any different game modes that do not require the 2/3 point philosophy. It’s nice to be able to play different game modes and not feel like a mindless robot for hours
One of the things I enjoy about PvP with other games (Halo, CoD, WoW, GW1, etc) Is that I can kill players while focusing on different objectives every time. CTF, Deathmatch, Team Death Match, Infected, Fort Aspenwood, Jade Quarry, Griffball, Select weapons only, Invasion, etc.
Why should GW2 be stuck with Conquest only?
Two things that can be done to address that:
1) Let us play in custom arena while waiting for a queue to pop. We could duel, or fight in 2v2v or 3v3 while waiting for our conquest/stronghold match
2) I hope the new WvW borderlands and improvements to WvW will make it so that killing players is not the struggle it is now. These bloody guard stacks, ascended armors and above all this immense plain maps make it impossible to kill a player if he wants to run away. The description of the new maps mention choke-points, which could hopefully be great ambush locations.
You know that the lack of players is what causes the bad matchmaking and makes it impossible to divide players in tiers right? Stronghold failing to attract more players will just divide the tiny spvp player-base.
Exactly. Anet’s developers aren’t completely clueless, and I’m pretty sure this new game mode is meant to be a gate between the three game modes. If Stronghold turns out to be fun, maybe we can hope to see the conquest player-base increase as well.
Ok two things:
1) Overall, 2014 was a good year for structured pvp imo. In april balance got rid of one of the most easy build in the game, the spirit ranger, and the reward tracks and UI improvements drove a lot of players to pvp, including myself and my entire guild. After that, Skyhammer was fixed, balance was better than ever with the nerf of hambow warriors, and the new MM is promising, even if it still has obvious flaws. The only thing they did that was a step backward, again in my opinion, was the changes to the LB. And those who say “bring back soloq” are just bad players who can’t deal with the fact that they are now matched against old teamq solo players who have much, much more strategic skill.
2) Stronghold is not supposed to attract the exact same players conquest do. It’s closer to WvW, and I don’t think that being noob-friendly is necessarily a bad thing. One of the main complain about conquest is that it is so difficult to get into. Back in april when I began to play conquest, boy was I screamed at for doing all the classic beginner’s mistakes! I toughened up and got better, but a lot of players don’t have this resilience, and for them Stronghold could be the place to develop their mechanical skill before trying a more combat heavy mode like conquest.
Rank farms don’t work, they just don’t. They are custom arenas, so the most you can hope for is 500 rank points, which is the same as losing in unranked. Furthermore, if the game is not long enough, there are diminishing returns. You could literally lose 100% of your games in unranked and “farm” rank points faster. The only reason I see for the existence of these arenas is for PvE over-achievers whose brains are set on grinding-mode, and will do anything not to actually play the game. You can also watch a movie during your rank farming.
I really, really hope they thought of that! But I would expect them to have a Mac version ready: all the DC runs smoothly on Mac, so why should HoT be an exception? I’d like a dev’s confirmation though.
The actual leveling (without the tomes of knowledge) is really, really slow: even going from lvl 2 to lvl 3 takes quite a few matches. I believe you only gain experience when killing players. But if you play unranked or ranked, you should be able to have 1.5 tomes/h. My guess is you’ll like it so much you won’t even care about leveling anymore! PvP allows you to really improve your mechanical skill, and it’s rather fast.
The thought of us balancing something so our own characters are stronger is simply ludicrous. A lot of devs that are directly involved with balance, myself included, tend to hop between professions quite often. Research, if you will. Theory and knowledge of mechanics can only go so far – the real key is getting your hands dirty.
Now, if things get serious in ranked queue (as they should), I’ll probably hop onto whatever I’m the most comfortable with just so I don’t bog my team down, but for the most part I like to keep things fresh by playing different professions.
I’ll give you a break and stop teasing you about Engies when you take “unblockable” away from Poison grenades. :P It makes just as much sense and is 10x more problematic than Bone Minions that you guys wrecked. RIP poor fellers.
Yeah… Poison nade is the only one you have to play really intelligently, saving it for the guardian shelter. By the way, most classes have unblockable attacks. A SD thief was always at a disadvantage against an engineer, but with the september nerf, you’re forced to use the poison field when he blocks. A block is not an invulnerability, and shouldn’t be: gear shield is already really strong as it is.
Where do you see all these devs? I’m on a EU french server and I’ve never seen one with the Anet tag.
last night i started getting really annoyed with the map selector, 4-5 games in a row on this dang map. it only ever happens when i play ranked q. so boring to do the same map over and over again.
@lil devils
Player vs Player
Whats not pvp about conquest maps?Player vs Player is KILLING other players, Player vs Environment is interacting with the environment. When the environmental elements are the primary focus it is a PVE centered game with PVP elements, you can kill players to win, but it is not necessary to win. That isn’t full PVP. The only full PVP map they have is courtyard, the rest are PVE maps with PVP elements.
Yeah, chess is also a PvE game because you have to move pieces and you can’t just smash the board on your opponent’s face, so boring! Sorry mate, but some of us do enjoy a little strategy added to the killing. And yes, as a team you do need to kill players to win. The only PvE aspect of it is when players die to Svanir.
Sorry there is no PvP mode where the primary objective is to PvP! The devs have confirmed that they probably won’t be releasing any arenas for at least 2 years if at all! Will this game really be around in 2 years though! That’s the question!
People throw out Courtyard but lol Courtyard is so bad! WvW is pretty terrible too! Run run run run run run! Win a 5v1 because people who play WvW are generally not so good! Chase that last guy around because everybody runs away in WvW! Run run run run run run some more! I’m starting to lag! Oh a giant mob! Now I’m dead and have to respawn waaaay back there! Run run run run run run! Wooooooo!
Wahoo! Bye frands!
You really should stop worrying about this arena issue. You’re slowly losing your frandliness, post after post.
If you like DM, why don’t you play with some friends in a custom arena? It’s the easiest game mode to implement without any help from the developers.
We agree. The spectator camera changes Branden just put in was just one small item on the list of things we’d like to do for spectator mode at some point. There has been some great discussion on the forums in the past regarding spectator mode improvements/readability, and we agree with much of what is said.
We haven’t talked about our new mode in-depth yet (no spoilers, sorry), but making it a friendlier viewer experience is something we think about constantly when making design decisions – right up there with making it fun, approachable, and intuitive.
These changes were awesome! Were they announced in the release notes? Because I couldn’t find them anywhere, even though they were the greatest changes in this patch. I watched the Go4GW2 finals, and it felt really immersive and rather epic.
In fact, the spectator mode is so advanced that it’s really a shame you can only use it in practice or to watch tournaments on twitch. I’m not sure this is technically possible, but a friend had an amazing idea: what if some important matches (the monthly Go4GW2 or WTS finals for example) were saved in game, so that anyone could spectate the match as if they were in it? It would be even cooler if the shoutcasting was added as well. A more advanced feature would be to be able to record our own games and replay them in spectator mode afterwards. So many possibilities!
People vote for Foefire so much because cele builds/bunkers fare very well there. Being that cele bunkers (engi, ele, warrior) are such a strong part of the meta right now…yeah, it gets voted for a lot.
Nah. I play in a team with one cele, one carrion and three bersekers, and we always vote this map. It’s just a fun map! I think people like the fact that you can really tricap and hold the entire game.
Good reward usualy involves promotion of low lvl materials which means A TON OF CLICKS for a couple gold of profit and i dont want to break my mouse or my finger.
Key farm is boring and i dont have a free slot =-/.
So i’d really like maybe less lucrative, but less tedious reward track with some easily convertible to gold rewards like random crafting mats instead of tomes and scrolls.
Good idea. Here’s another.
1) Convert gold to gems to buy a new character slot
2) Let your little sister play on this character
3) Ask your little sister to convert your skill points in gold and to farm keys
4) Reimburse the debt you made in 1)
5) Profit
edit: for other category of population, you can also do this with your child, or one of the staff member at the nursing home you’re in.

If the devs really play ranger, then they can not be accused of partiality whatsoever.
The game is designed so that engineer is superior in pvp in every way.
Pretty sure if a engineer is not best in the esport thing they announce they will nerf everything else. The class i hate the most its not hard to play it just dosen’t fit the genre.Lol. I agree engineer may be the strongest profession right now, but your conspiracy theory is laughable. Engineer is extremely popular right now not really because of a buff (some might say slick shoes, but a lot of engineers still play elixir S), but because the meta shifted. The rabid build is the same it has always been, but you don’t see many necros and mesmers running around, and the current meta greatly favors the good 1v1 builds. I remember back then, when everyone was saying “every dev plays warrior”, or “every dev plays thief”. No we have the “Every dev plays engineer” bs. I guess that’s part of the game too.
A lot do play Engi, They switched over to the more OP class just like a lot of other players did. In actuality though, in PvP and from the info from my friends in WvW, most devs are seen on Rangers. That is just from what I have seen and my friends in game. Do they main it? Who knows. That is just what we have seen in past few months with our own eyes.
I know Colin Johansson’s main is an engineer, at least I think. It’s not really relevant though: I’m sure they are mature enough at Anet not to mix work and play^^. But yeah, I know a lot of players that switch profession with the meta, so maybe some at Anet do too. The real question is: is it possible to work at Anet and not play GW2 during your free time?
I agree with you timmyf, and this is often the opening I use on this map with my (rather inexperienced) team when I play thief. Then during the game I only do a boss if I see the enemy team is killing it and I want to steal it. Or if it’s a really close game and I want to get these lasts 25-50 points. In the Go4GW2 cup, I noticed the teams only kill the bosses in the very end of the match, if they are behind in the score.
Yes, more often than not, soloq heroes like to ping dozens of times on the bosses. It’s a really bad behavior, since the new players feel like it’s the correct thing to do. It happened to me when I was a cute little dolyak. Especially when you lost the mid point, you shouldn’t go for the bosses, you should decap a point. That’s my opinion at least, I’m by no mean a top player.
True. It would be hilarious if people had to sit though a clip like this every so many blocks in PvP.
It might get annoying enough for them to start self-regulating. xD
Dude, that’s so cute I’d start swearing in pvp just to get to watch it.
Archaon, most players make the same mistakes a few times before actually getting good, so I understand your frustration, but accept that new players can’t really learn in the fire of action. In the best cases, they read their map chat in the end and try to learn their lesson.
I wish that every new player in unranked would watch Backpack’s video on basic rotations. Most basic mistakes can be avoided by just respecting the rules explained in these short twenty minutes. Mono, if you want to get gud, here’s the first step:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvPb2jY19oU
As for pvp rewards, the reward tracks are actually very rewarding. What’s more there is already very valuable shiny you can farm only in PvP – Tomes of Knowledge. Other players don’t get this treasure so easily. The other cool reward are transmutation charges.
Well, considering i have almost two stacks of tomes and scrolls + over 100 stones, it doesnt feel cool at all, i’d rather have an option to get other loot instead.
Time to go full Pretty Woman, my friend! But yeah, a reward track without good could be a good idea. More choice is always good
The game is designed so that engineer is superior in pvp in every way.
Pretty sure if a engineer is not best in the esport thing they announce they will nerf everything else. The class i hate the most its not hard to play it just dosen’t fit the genre.

Do you speak french? If you do, Augury Rock is the place to be. On se voit dans les Brumes!
