The might nerf comes from pvp, but even in PvE the amount of additional stats this buff gives is insane. Tuning it down is not necessarily a bad thing. And I don’t know if you noticed, but the confusion patch is for PvE only, sir there IS some kind of PvE balance.

First of all: are you famous or something? And do you play condi ranger as a good enough level that I could learn something from it?

Build templates: yes, definitely, but only in structured pvp. That would be absolutely broken in WvW: I see that I can’t defeat my opponent as a power thief, I reset, change build and kill him with a cheese condi build.

Dueling: again, great idea, but only in HotM, or at the very least outside the main cities. How silly would it be to have duels inside LA? Aren’t these illegal?

I’m always in favor of more pvp titles. Thanks for the good suggestions.

1. You can’t. You can try to join the party of people in the other team, and if you can’t, they are already in a party. It doesn’t tell you the size of the party though.

2. I think a dev said somewhere that the “captain” (I assume you mean the one whose name is spoken in the beginning of the match) is the team member of highest MMR, but I wouldn’t take my word for it.

3. My guess is that you lost 500-0 on Courtyard, which often happens if your team composition is worse than the one of the opposite team. Your personal score was therefore 0, and the game considered you were afk. I’m not aware of the penalty, but it’s possible you get stripped of your rewards in that case. This case is almost impossible on other maps (happened to me yesterday, though, in a match were I was outplayed hard), because you can almost always decap a node a t some point.

Seriously its TERRIBLE.

95% of 4vs5 games were caused by people raging IN GAME and then dcing/afking.

Thank you for these stats that are absolutely not made up. It’s extremely rare to have 4v5s now, whilst according to you their number should have decreased by 5%. Therefore, the ready-up button is here to stay.

You guys are making good points. Theoretically, Anet could use the data from the test season to find all the balanced matches were the variance of the MMR between the two was sensibly different, and see which team tends to win. If you’re right, the team with the lowest variance would statistically win. But I have no idea how much time that would cost, and I doubt they do it in the near future, especially when the “bring soloq back” crowd monopolizes the debate on match making.

The answer really depends on what they will announce on saturday. If it really is a big expansion (we’re talking 4-5 new maps, a new profession, at least one new weapon, at least one new dungeon, etc.), then I don’t think the devs realized that LS wasn’t the way to go: it takes time to release a big expansion, so they should have started during season one.

In my opinion, it’s both. LS was meant to have content, probably enough to satisfy casual PvE players, so in a way it was meant to be some kind of expansion. But I think that in the last episode of Points of Interest (didn’t watch it, someone told me), they announced that when they designed the sylvaris, they wanted them to be Mordremoth’s children. So at least season 2 would be a build-up for this possible expansion. We’ll see.

Is the problem that the current algorithm consider this a fair (50/50 odds) match and the consensus is that team A will always win?

How about squaring the individual ratings, averaging these and then taking the square root of the average?

Team A = 1813
Team B = 1519

This would weigh better players more. I’m not sure this is a wise solution but I think this could work mathematically to implement it

I like the maths behind this idea. Yes, if we admit that it’s more difficult to win when the variance of the MMR is bigger, this would be a nice implementation. But is it really? In this example, we know who’s on TS. But if no one is? Then a team were everyone plays decently could very well win against a team with very good and very bad players. In a team game, it takes one bad apple to ruin the batch. I personally prefer seeing very bad and very good players against me in a match: I just have to focus on the good players, and know that the bad players will always lose their 1v1 pretty quickly.

I believe I once saw a Champion Brawler in hotjoin. It could have been my imagination though. I think it’s cool to have some really hard to get titles like this, that can be reached only after years of playing: in early 2016, when you finally get it, post it on the forum, and we’ll cheer! As long as there are not too many titles like this (looking at you, WvW achievements…)

To be honest Laserbolt, are you really sure team 1 would win? A 3-man team can only carry so much: if the two new players keep dying to Svanir, staying in lost fights or afking on the home node, team 2 could very well win. But like Justin, I’d like to believe that very low and very high MMR can’t be teamed like this, if they don’t play on New Year’s Eve at 11pm.

I doubt they have the fire power to do a balance patch every other month, let alone every other week (which would be too much imo). Let’s hope their (probable) paying expansion sells well and new players come to pvp. What matters most to me is that the balance is good, even if the meta lasts for too long, and right now, GW2 may have the best balance in a MMO.

This is the reason why so many unexperienced players play in Ranked Arena runining the gameplay of experienced players. Cause they dont want to play on kitten maps like Skyham, Spirit Watch or Courtyard, and cause they also want to see the Standard Models.

Even if a lot of unexperienced players are playing in Ranked Arena, you should never face them as an experienced player since the match making system is in place.
From my own experience, most players just overestimate their skill level, and just blame the other players.

Frankly, at this point, if people do not push ready, it means they really don’t want to. Especially in soloq, a lot of people don’t push the ready-up button because they’re discussing some kind of quick strategy. The button could maybe be a little bit larger, but don’t forget it’s not mandatory to press it.

I doubt this is possible, but it would be awesome, at least for a fortnight-long special event. I like to play a few matches when I come home from a party around 2 or 3am, and I’d have balanced matches against prime-time american players. Yay!

Every match under the old solo q system was not amazing and high quality not to mention the countless 4v5 and sky hammer matches

Thank you for that little reminder. The patch made me enjoy soloq again: no more insane queue times, people who actually wanted to organise in order to win (these guys were queuing solo in teamq before december), no more 4v5, etc. If we could have profession-based MMR and, yes Justin you’re absolutely right, more info on the match, and above all a broader player base, soloq would be almost as good an experience as teamq is.

I only play solo and the MM is actually pretty solid. I wish it would show you after the match who joined together like it does in DOTA2. It would shut the whiners up who blame “premades” for their personal failure to play properly or well.

At the start of the match, right click the players on the other team to see if they are in a party. If they are, it will say “join party” since they have a premade. If they’re not, it will say “invite to party”. You can do this from the scoreboard during the waiting period.

It’s not rocket science to see.

And how do you tell if they are a premade or a duo and a trio?

What about duoq, trioq? Why should solos be the only ones to have a separate queue? Justin, just let us see more information about the games (who teamed up with who, what chances each team standed according to the matchmaking), and this “solos versus premade” nonsense will disappear. It will save you the trouble to reply individually to all the sore losers on the forums.

If a player is in a weak team, the average MMR on this team is likely to be low. So the matchmaking system understands that a team is at a disadvantage. Now, in an ideal world, if you were really the best in soloq, you could get on top of the LB. But the pvp in GW2 is about team play and communication, so obviously you’ll perform better on a team.

Try to be positive, help in every team fight you can be a part of, don’t expect too much from your team mates, and you’ll have a good time in soloq. But team play is important, and there’s still a lot of randomness in matchmaking, so don’t be too kitten yourself or your team if you lose in soloq.

Because some people can actually tell how the changes will impact the game. For example, after these latest balance changes, engi is going to be the most OP class by far. It is obvious.

This coming patch will nerf might stacking. Other than a couple minor cd reductions, Engi’s aren’t getting buffed.

I hope you mean that Cele Engi’s will be weaker yet more OP than Ele and Warriors. Because other than that, the class after this patch will be the same as before.

Well, celestial engineers won’t be as strong. That’s great, because having 10 stacks of might at all time without blasting a single fire field was a bit too much. But rabid engineers are still extremely strong, and they were one of the only really strong builds that didn’t rely too much on might stacking. The tormenting sigil is a nice addition for them as well (that’s my main’s build in WvW). But we’ll see how it turns out.

Just a question, why do you want to get your profession specific daily done? The rewards are not great, and do you really need the 10AP? I’m genuinely interested because I like these dailies, but if I really don’t feel like playing the daily professions I just don’t, and I don’t know why you’d force yourself.

The reward isn’t too bad its gives you good amount of reward track increase.

Thing is, people don’t want to do hotjoin for that easy win.
Winning on a certain class is so easy to do, just requires you go and join a hotjoin.

Its not like its a win a ranked game as a thief.

But yes I’m pretty bored of this as well.

This game is lacking community. There should be rewards like daily 5 man group que in ranked.

Rather than kittening people off, you should get people together and make friends.

The daily gives you two boosters. That’s 1/40 of a reward track, approximately the same progression as winning one match in ranked/unranked. So if you don’t want to do the daily win, just chose a profession you play way, and win a game! It’s probably faster, since you have better chances of winning.

It’s true, and I’m a little worried about engis myself. But it still doesn’t qualify as a feedback. More like meta speculations. Furthermore, the actual balance patch sometimes varies a little from the initial plans, for example Arcing Slice being less buffed than expected, and Blinding Powder being less nerfed in the previous patch.

Unprovoked, I receive the most snide and offensive comments and PMs when I use it…thus further increasing the entertainment value I extract from the game. Its great against the newest batch of Legendary Champs and PVEers who spent all but 2 weeks in hotm and think they know it all and better than you bcoz their finisher is higher up the chain.

Rabbit finisher is over used and doesn’t deliver the subtle message of being outplayed by a noob as good as the deer.

Also, there is a ginormous skill and overall knowledge disparity between the very first r80s or at least those who got there before any buffs were introduced and the recent ones. HUGE.

I just want to point out that the trolling is a lot less effective if you’re wearing sparkly armor. You’ve got to put on that first level armor that’s totally mismatched and torn looking to really sell it.

Or just make a different char of your favorite profession. That always works.

I’m with you on greatest fear. But don’t you think it’s unfair that solos get a separate queue and pairs don’t? And do you remember the awful queue times in the old soloq? I would like to see who was in who’s party in the end of the game: I’m pretty sure this “Solos against premade” rant is a delusion in most cases. With my team, I played against a lot of solos in the old days in teamq, because the matchmaking didn’t take roaster size into account. It not so common nowadays.

It’s funny how some people on the forums cry when the super hardcore pvp players get on the top of the LB instead of the real top players, and then complain that they can’t show off with the finisher they grinded like crazy to obtain. Guess what, old timers, rank didn’t mean more in your time than it does now: it’s still a measure of how many matches you played, not how good you are. Imo, when you reach shark in the new system, you have had all the experience you need, and be better than the old shark ranks. For some reason I’m pretty sure you’re the same people who asked for the old LB to be revamp, because you couldn’t deal with the fact that some casuals were better than you.

Cele eles are borderline OP, due to the amulet. No way a class should have that much dmg, coupled with that much healing and then a heap of prot on top of that. The amulet needs adjusting.

That being said, the biggest OP about d/d ele’s is the LW. They need to fix that crap, as a simple macro and you can go from 1k to 20k in about 2-3 seconds..

Done.

yep solo queue removal was the worst thing ever. Punish 80-90% to please 10-20% of the players. smart.

Id prefer 20 minute queue times then the current system.

That’s just terribly wrong. Soloq had a MUCH smaller population than teamq, which is why the queues were so long! There were posts on the forum asking for soloq to be removed.

For me, this patch has saved soloq. I now enjoy it, while I never played it before the patch. A quick reminder of what the old soloq was, for the nostalgics here:

  1. Horrible matchmaking: I played against ROM when I was just above rank 50. The games overall were less balanced than they are now, because the population was smaller (a lot of us played solo in teamq).
  2. Skyhammer: Well, you know what I mean.
  3. 4v5 all the time: The patch solved this issue.
  4. Less rewards: It caused even more players to never play soloq.
  5. Idiotic rotations: Most of the serious players had left for teamq, so you spent the whole game banging your face on your keyboard in frustration. Even hotjoin matches where better sometimes.
  6. Queue times: It was awful. In prime time it could add up to 15 minutes. During the night, it was simply ridiculous

Points 2, 3 and 4 definitely belong to the past, but 1, 5 and 6 would still be a huge problem if we were to get soloq back. Granted, there are still a lot of issues with the new system, but I absolutely do not want to get back to that time. And don’t forget that the patch also made things easier for 2-man, 3-man and 4-man teams.

You got it wrong. The patch didn’t try to save teamq. It tried to save soloq from itself.

Got 46 charaters who all vote no to increase the level cap, all looking at their wallet in panic.
Bad enough when patches makes some runes/sigils worthless and lots of them have to go and get new runes/sigils again.

Appart from that i dont see the need, since you need to redesign the traits to match the new levels and tons of other things need to be reworked to work with the level increase. Better if they focus on fixing some of the many bugs instead of making new bugs with useless level increase.

Man, do you have a CHRO char to manage your other characters? And what if you don’t remember where you left that sinister trinket you absolutely want to use? shivers

Engineers are the second fastest class in the game if traited with Speedy Kits, the fastest is shortbow Thief.

Warriors have a traitable swiftness when carrying certain weapons.

I made a race with a sword/horn-GS warrior on my engi traited with speedy kits, using rocket boots and slick shoes, and I lost. That was before the buff on super speed, though, and on uneven ground.

Well… How do I put this… It’s randomized! Randomized doesn’t mean well distributed, it means the output is random! If you keep tracking the representation of each profession and do stats in a year, the deviation will be smaller, but for know, there hasn’t been enough dailies to worry about this. But yeah, the rewards are not that good, so play mesmer if you want to.

If you ask others, they’d tell you ANet spends too much time and effort catering to the whims of PvPers as it is. The PvE players significantly outnumber the WvW players who significantly outnumber the PvP players.

I’d tell you to get in line, but you guys keep butting ahead of the WvW players.

You think WvW players are more than us? It’s possible, but that I don’t know how you could possibly tell. What I know is that 2014 was overall a good year for pvp (especially the april patch that made it so much easier to get into and rewarding), so if they are more people in WvW, I hope that in 2015 Anet gives them at least a new map.

Edit: I forgot that EotM came out in 2014, so there’s that, even if it’s know mostly PvDoors

It improves a bit, but your personal skill increases as well, so it’s always a bit frustrating. Group play is always more fun and more competitive, plus you can talk with your friends, which is always cool. If you ever play solo, just know the following rules:

1) Never care too much about winning. It’s more about who you’re with and who you’re fighting than your personal skill.

2) Never expect your team mates to win a balanced team fight that you’re not part of.

3) Always say hi and discuss some kind of strat in the beginning. Be friendly and encouraging: a lot of winnable games are lost because someone in your team lost hope. Furthermore, you could make friends you can teamq with later.

4) Never expect your downed team mates to not use their downed abilities when you stealth them. It never works.

5) If you do lose, don’t rage on the noob you had on your team. He’s not responsible for the matchmaking.

OP, I’ll try to give you one number that could change your mind. I was in the top 1000 EU in the beginning of the season, but didn’t play since January 1st. So naturally, I dropped to 96%, which is just 1-2 points behind the 1000st player in the LB. I therefore assume that the top 1000 players represent 4% of ranked players.

To sum up, around 25.000 players competed in ranked arena between December 16th 2014 and January 13th 2015, in Europe only.
