The real problem for me is that celestial engineers maintain 10 stacks of might without blasting a single fire field. Fire field blasting is fine: it takes active skill, and can be countered. It’s predictable, and you can prevent it by using CC. I would reduce the might duration on strength/hoelbrack/pirate runes and/or have sigil of battle give two stacks of might instead of three.

The easiest solution would be to have the class daily randomized: right now two professions are selected randomly (it’s not a designed pattern, you can tell by the lack of necro daily) and given to everyone. Why not have the achievement randomized for each player individually, to avoid profession stacking? Any developer to tell me if it’s technically possible?

What amazes me most in this affair is that the reward you get from winning a match with a profession you don’t know how to play is equivalent to the reward you get from just winning a match with a build you are good with. So obviously people like doing the class daily just for fun (I know I do), and yet every other post on this forum wants it gone!

Frankly, compared to what soloq pre patch was, unranked is a paradise: shorter queues, you can queue with friends, and almost no 4v5. Let’s hope that when the dishonor system gets implemented, it will be even rarer.

GW2 is simply not an open pvp game. However, I think the LW could be a good pretext to shake things up a bit. For example, what if the humans and the norns were suddenly at war against the asuras, the chars and the sylvaris? It’s a bit of a stretch lore-wise, but they could have a region (ascalon for example) become open pvp for, say, two weeks. This would be fun, and if some don’t like it because it makes their world completion harder, they just have to wait two weeks! Every vista would become a new version of the Obsidian Sanctum. Yay!

Amazing is an opinion. But yeah, the armor is exclusive, and intended to be given to a very small minority. Most of us won’t ever have it, and it’s find that way (especially if you find it ugly^^). But having less exclusive rewards for less exceptional players would be a good thing.

Yeah, it would be nice to have some idea of the skill/rank of those you are playing with or against. It might prevent complete beginners from raging against experienced players when they mess up or don’t understand they are facing really skilled opponents.

As an example: I was placed in a sPvP match against TCG earlier in the Beta. When it started to go badly, one of our team started raging against us. Had no idea who we were facing. At the end of the match, I told him it was TCG we were facing, and he shoots back something like “I know, that’s no reason to play badly though.” Really? A bunch of scrubs with a hodgepodge of skills, classes and no communication should not get slaughtered in this scenario.

The disappointment could be avoided with more transparency.

On the other hand, pvp would be an even harder place for beginners. The losing team would always blame the worse ranked, I’m sure you can see the problem.

Next season: more rewards?

The first pvp season is almost over, and 25 lucky hardcore players will get amazing, exclusive rewards. 250 will get a rather cool mini-lama. And in total, between 20.000 and 30.000 european players who have competed in ranked pvp during the season will get nothing.

Now take a look at the last WvW season. Literally everyone who played in the last season got the maximal reward their world could achieve, by playing five minutes every week for four week. In my opinion, we need to find a middle ground.

Granted, the new pvp leaderboard needs to change to be less of a grind festival. But let’s assume it will be fixed (one can hope, it’s a test season after all). I think it would be nice to have a wider set of rewards, distributed from the players at 70% to the players in the top 10. Something like the ticket system in WvW (I stole this idea from someone on the forum, don’t remember who, but thank you): the higher your position in the LB is, the more tickets you get. With a crazy amount of tickets, you could get the exclusive armor pieces, and maybe some new exclusive skins, and with less, things like tomes of knowledge, ascended trinkets, reward track boosters, crafting mats, anything would do really.

If the rewards are good, regular pvpers would want to play their A game in ranked, which would probably mean less afkers and map chat heroes, and part of the pve and wvw crowd would probably try pvp, which is good because let’s face it, we need more players to have a better match making. What do you guys think?

That’s actually a smart move. It just shows that this particular engi is a good player (like when a mesmer in soloq announces he’ll use his portal). Supply crate is extremely powerful, and also has a very long CD, that’s why you should announce when it’s off CD. If the CD was so short that you didn’t need to tell your team, then the skill would be OP. Maintaining 10 stacks of might without blasting a single fire field is OP, supply crate is not.

Regarding your other issue, the plague form gives you stability, but it’s still just a buff, and can be removed before the plague form ends. My guess is that your foe used Corrupt Boon, and turned your stability into fear. That’s something you have to be careful about, especially when fighting other necros and trickery thieves (95% of the thieves in structured pvp).

I don’t know, invis pulling the creatures away from the attacking group (like with engineer magnet) and then crow bar smashing the creature to death has led to a number of clutch turnarounds in games I’ve been in. If you time it right you can make things go in your favor like 80-90% of the time which is much better than a coin flip.

I second that. The other option is sending a thief with the mug trait. It does the exact same amount of damage every time it hits. Or a Mind Wrack. Or a well timed fear. Well, there is actually a lot of methods to make sure you kill the beast.

There has to be a way to avoid this.....

So i should stop playing a class I want to play( not for the daily) to play something I dont want? this daily thing is causing a lot of the problems to the matchmaking. they should just give random class dailys to everyone and not the same so we dont suffer team of one class.

There is value in this idea. Though I’ve not noticed daily-induced class stacking in ranked arena, it can be annoying in unranked. However, I love these daily profession achievements, and so do a lot of other players obviously (hence the profession stacking). It encourages me to play on characters I tend to neglect, making them sad. So making the daily profession random for every player looks like a very inexpensive fix to the problem.

You guys definitely made some good points. Just one more thing before I go back to the game: Is there really no point of PVE at all?
Even in pure PVP games like battlefield you can still get a gun or two from the story mode to use in PVP. If there is nothing you gain in PVE other then skin, then why bother even make PVE? Its not like fighting AI monsters is anywhere close to fighting other characters.
Whats more ridiculous is that the award you get from PVP is for PVE. Isn’t that just stupid if PVP and PVE not suppose to have any connection in this game? At least they can make some PVP gears as a reward for leveling up PVP so playing PVP has a point since PVE already doesnt do anything?
Can someone please give me one reason to ever step foot in PVE that would make a difference for me in PVP other then skin

No difference. You should only play Pve if you enjoy it, it’s the way the game was designed. Most players prefer a specific game mode, but sometimes mess around in the other parts of the game, that’s why the rewards make sense.

I was sceptic at first (I had a lot of very imbalanced matches in the days that followed the patch), but with time it got better. 4v5 are now rare, queues are ridiculously short, and queuing solo is as rewarding as queuing as a team. Before the patch, I felt obligated to play in a full premade all the time, and now I’ve rediscovered the wonders of soloq! The only thing I don’t like is the new leaderboards: the old ones were just fine: even casuals could be on top, provided they fought well and won against the odds.

There is one major problem: the game is balanced around five-man teams. In unranked, if my team is loosing the team fights but has better mobility (maybe two thieves), if two players on my team voluntarily quit, we have a good chance of winning by rotating faster. And what do you do if one player on your team just decides to afk and run around near the spawn?

Since the patch, I have the feeling that the number of 4v5 has drastically decreased. I even started queuing solo again! You can’t ask the developers to entirely get rid of 4v5, because it’s a player-generated issue. Some people are bad sports, and we’re forced to deal with it.

I would like to have the possibility of seeing who teamed up with who at the end of the game. Countless times, in a match were my foes were crushed, one of them wrote in map chat: “premade vs soloers, how fun!”, when actually we were all solo players. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think in many cases it’s just the egos talking (I lost, so they must be a premade).

Keeping solo and premade apart isn’t a solution. The good thing about the old solo queue was you could queue up and play with other people your level in fun games. That isn’t the case now. When you queue solo you get in games with many beginners. Not enough people solo queue currently (who are decent) because the system is so frustrating.

I must admit I’m not under the same impression. Before the patch, I was around 95% in the soloq leaderboard, and I played with and against either complete noobs (I mean, “what is close?” kind of noobs) or ROM. Since the patch, it’s not really more balanced (I’d say a little bit), but the queue times are much shorter!

Furthermore, this thread specifically asks for the return of soloq, but you say solos against premades is not the problem? The problem with soloq is that no matter how good you are, it’s always RNG: if your teammates are better than your foes, usually, you’ll win. And like I said, I’d like an option to be added to know for sure that I’m not against a premade. I mean, one 3-man party once in a while is ok, but right now you can only guess when it happens.

The old leaderboards were fine, but the forum crowd complained cause they wouldn’t accept that casuals could be better than they were, and voilà! How the incapacity of many to understand an incredibly simple mathematical formula led to this grind festival. It’s a shame though: the new matchmaking finally offers the opportunity to perform well while duo/trio queuing, but your performance will not appear on the LB unless you play all day long.

Well, the real issue here is that the leaderboards are not MMR-based like they used to, but when they were, the hardcore players whined about casuals being in the LB. The forum crowd is never satisfied.

Guys! The thread was supposed to be about standard character models. If you wish to complain about matchmaking and soloq, there are at least 10 threads to do so.

About standard character models, I think wanting them in every queue is something the “try-hard esports crowd” would want, but what about the casuals? Guild Wars 2 pvp is so cool it feels like a MOBA, but let’s not forget that it is in fact a RPG. I spent time giving my characters their cool, unique looks, and I’d want my opponents to notice them. Hell, if I make an autumn-themed sylvari elementalist, I don’t want people thinking she’s just another bimbo from Divinity’s Reach!

Zypher, experienced players go in practice mode to, well, practice. I myself am a medium skill player, and I usually go to practice to learn how to duel on a build/profession I don’t know yet. But you’re right: the imbalance in hotjoin prevents you from learning anything. If you want to get better, follow these two simple steps:

1) Find another player who is slightly more experienced than you or on the same level, and duel in an empty server, to learn your skills and know how to behave in a fight. Ask good players playing your profession for tips.

2) Play unranked. With the new matchmaking, the matches are usually balanced, and you will learn the basic rotations.

Naturally, after that, you still will be considered a noob, but you’ll be ready to form a team with a few friends and hop in ranked. Good luck!

Matchmaking doesn't seem improved

Frankly, I play a lot more of soloq since Tuesday, and it’s even better that it used to be. Sure, people walk around like headless chickens, but it was always the case, and at least the queues are shorter and profession stacking is less of a problem.

Although, when I play with 2 or 3 friends, I often get really unbalanced match (half of the time). I mean, we win by 500-70. Before the patch, it seemed to be better. But I noticed a difference since Tuesday: it’s less awful than it was.

Well OP is not entirely wrong. Celestial gameplay is rather cool: you can alternate between a slow condi gameplay and a fast power mini-burst. The problem is, might gives this amulet to much of an advantage on three particular professions.

Which is why the previous PvP dailies were just better than these. Sure there weren’t as many, but you could just play the way you wanted to instead of figuring which alt you were going to dust off and suck at for today.

That’s your opinion, but the rewards for daily profession is actually quite good, and it gets you out of your comfort zone. It’s true that you see too much class stacking in unranked as a result. I would be in favor of a “win on 3 professions” daily reward.

Experts: What class carries solos best?

In my opinion, the best builds to carry your team are (assuming all 10 players are bad), in that order:
- Turret engi: sit on far the whole game, watch your foes die one by one after they respawn.
- Cele or condi engi: great in 1v1, good in team fights, great mobility, fits every comp. Doesn’t work if the other team has one or two necros.
- Cele engi: Better in 1v1, but can’t 1v2 as long as the previous builds. Try to help in team fights.
- Terrormancer: Counters the other team engis and elementalists, and not that popular: you’re not likely to enter a full necro team.

What you should NOT play if you want to help a hopeless team:

S/d or D/p Thief

- No. I’m a big fan of yours but that’s just not true. Even if the new matchmaking has made profession stacking less of a problem, it still happens, and having 2 or 3 thieves in your team will most of the time make you loose. And I’m not even speaking about downed scrubs spamming their downed abilities, making you waste your only reliable way of ressing people (SR)
- Shatter mesmer: if your PUG doesn’t have a thief and theirs do, you’re through.
- Ranger longbow: noone likes you. Find a team that accepts to put up with your stupid build or go condi.
- SD engineer: yes, running engineer solo is not ALWAYS a good idea.

I think the real cool thing about the ranger is that every single weapon they have are viable and have cool animations. It’s disheartening that most rangers I run into nowadays don’t seem to know that the long bow is not their only weapon set.

Also, if you like to 1v1, rangers are in a really good place right now, especially the condition builds.

To develop a little, I think the ranger hate comes from two factors:

- Most rangers in spvp are total noobs. I’m scared every time I have one on my team. For one excellent condi survival ranger, I get at least 10 silly LB power rangers who completely ignore their other weapon set and get eaten by thieves cause they don’t know what to do once they are in melee range.

- Even when the ranger is good, it’s still infuriating to get killed at long range in one second, if you are already engaged in a fight.

- I like to play ranger from time to time, but for me and a lot of players, a ranged profession is in itself annoying. Don’t you just hate the sound of the SB AA and the Rapid Fire? Pew pew pew pew. But then again, it’s more of a personal problem. I can’t play elementalist because of the weird sound effects.

For once on this sub forum, I won’t be complaining about the new matchmaking not working as intended. I will share my experience about the new matchmaking working too well.

I’m a casual player. My guild has seven active members, most of them IRL friends, and we like to do some tpvp together. We’re not very skilled, we don’t rotate very efficiently, and most of us only play one or two professions. However, with the old matchmaking system, we ended up being above 95% in the leaderboards. Why? Because we often encountered experienced solo or duo players, who totally wrecked us in 1v1 and even team fights, but that we could outplay by proper rotations and communication.

Since the patch, we only run into full premades, as intended. As a result, we lose. A lot. I’m not here to complain, it’s a great chance for me and my mates to improve our gameplay, but I made this thread so that these teams, the ones that made you experienced players write in caps lock “HOW CAN WE LOSE TO SUCH SCRUBS!”, know that they won’t ever be forgotten. Rest in peace, noob teams.

I never experienced that, but I’ve had my share of ragequiters who just wander round if they are discontent for whatever reason. What do you want to do? They are still playing, you can always report them, but what more would you suggest? A ban system would be worse: these poor new players who are just bad but willing to do well will soon be discouraged to queue. You have to accept that you are playing with and against other people, and that some people are just bad sports! What I usually do is I start queuing solo and when I find people I like, I ask them to join my party, and after a few games, voilà! Full premade.

Most classes can deal with a hambow in 1v1s nowadays. Axebow is probably the best for that.

Respectfully disagree. Hambow is the only good 1v1 option. I will crush an Axebow warrior in 1v1.

Odds on winning and Rank improvement

We removed seeing other player’s rank to prevent harassment and the shaming of new players.

We don’t show MMR for the same reason.

I think you’ve got an excellent point here Justin. It’s already painful to be the underdog in a team, and it would be too easy to always blame the lowest MMR for the loss instead of questioning oneself and one’s mistakes.

However, as it is, I often end a match thinking “I’m an overlord, but my teammates were scrubs and my foes were pro players, gj Anet”, while in most cases this explanation is certainly delusional. So I think it might be good to see at least the mean MMR in each team, as well as who queued with who (to stop with this “we were all solos, they were a premade” attitude). I know a lot of players didn’t like the old leaderboards because they were casual friendly (as if it was a bad thing), but they had the advantage of being really straight-forward: with the new leaderboards, we should get the tools to understand them better.

Maybe it’s a chance. In the times of the almighty hambow, you almost couldn’t play anything else. This new S/WH meta completely changed the role of the warrior in a team composition, which is kind of refreshing. You also see a lot of players running S/S, rabid or celestial, which is probably a little less effective but looks kitten!

Our bunkers normally don’t enter the match as their bunker character, and also experience disconnect. We normally take care to make sure if someone disconnects they atleast earn points before the match ends but could there be abandonment penalties for swapping or DCing?

Yes, disconnecting or changing professions will count as desertion, and give that player dishonor. They will also be scored on the ladder as if they had a full loss, meaning as if their team had scored 0 points.

So I just got into a team with 3 Engineers and 2 Mesmers vs Guardian, Necromancer, Thief, Elementalist and Engineer. So my choice is to be selfless and relog to a semi-bunker/full bunker (I chose Warrior, Sw/W shoutbuild due to getting Spirit Watch) to give us a chance, or selfish and just give up from the beginning, farm as many points as we still can?

Though I like the aspect of learning different builds so I can relog and be as useful for the team as I can be, I don’t mind if it’s impossible either, but then atleast don’t give me bullkitten teams like 3 Engineers and 2 Mesmers?

Exactly. Knowing how to play different builds to fit the comp should be rewarded. I’m not much of a gamer, but I think most MOBAs have a way of selecting characters in the beginning of the game to ensure a good team composition, right? Something like that would be cool, especially with Skyhammer and Courtyard being added to the queue.

Let’s be honest, although Anet did a good job with profession stacking (I almost never encounter profession stacking unless I play elementalist or at 4 am), you can’t have a perfect matchmaking: how would an algorithm recognize a working composition? Even if I’m the only mesmer in my team, it’s not always wise to play it if I know my enemy has a really good thief in their team. The most inexpensive way to solve this issue is probably to implement build templates, but even so, I can’t imagine myself playing a bunker venom thief if one of my teammate is already using a panic strike or a SD build.

I’m pretty sure you can’t. Since dishonored wasn’t implemented I did that regularly this past week, and as a result I stand at a magnificent 7% (0 points) on the leaderboards! I just realized my mistake reading this thread. So don’t do it. It’s a shame though: if I cared about my LB rank (which I really don’t), I couldn’t run a thief or a mesmer when I queue solo in ranked arena: there are too many team compositions in which I wouldn’t fit. And people complain that everyone is running ele or engi!

Wow. Our servers must be really different. Granted, there are now a lot of meditation guardians, which is the new build for bad players (along with power ranger), a place that was occupied not so long ago by warrior builds. But there are still a lot of them running around. In comparison, engineers are supposed to be broken, but you hardly ever see them in WvW. Warriors still has a lot to offer in that game mode: best off combat mobility in the game on a weapon that just got buffed (GS), insane damage, incredible passive regen, huge health pool, etc.

In addition, their role in a zerg can hardly be filled by guardians, whose CC capabilities are nowhere close to them. Come on, I know we’re not as god mode as we used to be, but the profession is still in a very good place. And on the positive side, when I see a warrior on my team in spvp these days, I’m less worried of him being a total noob than I was a while ago.

Note to the 5 pet thing Rangers can have up to 7 pets

8 if you use a mini! It won’t do much, but add to the petting zoo effect. And more if you count warhorn 4 birds as pets.

Often. That’s why I’m so mad when I hop in a hotjoin with a stupid build and get roflstomped by a dragon finisher DD ele. I mean, it’s hotjoin!

On some maps, if you use the belt utility of the elixir S, you can even decap without the crate. For example, on Foefire’s quarry, you pull your foe in the gap between the high spot on the left (graveyard in your back) and the point. Or on Khylo, pull them in the stairs from the window and jump roll on the point.

I also enjoy Warrior hammer skill, simply because of people shouting “Hammer Stun” in TS in WvW fights.

I’m a dev in disguise, and I’m going to nerf all the skills posted here, so it’s a balance thread! Seriously though. I’m sorry, but I didn’t know where to post it. Maybe general GW2 sub forum? But since this subforum often talk about skills on different professions…

My personal favorite is Infiltrator’s arrow: cool animation, and so useful! Thieves would be a bit useless in tpvp without it.
