So is the general consensus that a SB condition build for PvE is a bad idea? I’ve been 80 for a month and still haven’t bought a single piece of exotic equipment because I can’t figure out what kind of build to go with for primarily PvE play. I was heading towards a condition build until I read this thread.
well it depends, you have a semi reliant aoe poison (not as accurate as ground target poison), and a semi reliant single target 5-6 stack bleed (if you are flanking the target) on shortbow as your condition damage skills.
if you feel you can land them consistently then go for it. just remember that poison doesn’t stack (loads of other sources for poison from other professions), bleeds cap at 25 stacks, and your 5-6 bleed stacks don’t last very long (3 sec per bleed).
i’m also fairly new to ‘rangering’ but the general consensus from what i’ve read and experienced is that with shortbow you either want to go for a power build or a condition build, halfway hybrid builds tend not to perform as well.
Once you make up your mind on what ‘style’ you prefer to play it really is a case of personal preference in how you balance your defensive and offensive stat gear. There’s no point in being really defensive if you don’t get hit a lot, similarly if you have too much offensive it leaves you vulnerable to losing you HP very quickly and having to pull out of a fight and risk getting downed / defeated.
http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/ is a great site for fiddling with stats and gear.
Just keep in mind that shortbows are more a pvp weapon (not to say they aren’t useful in pve) and untraited are designed for more single target control (single target cripple, single target interrupt).
There’s a great consolidation of guides posted too which can help a ton.
this is like asking which is best, rock, paper or scissors.
it’s clearly rock.
id like them to reduce the range back to normal.
if someone builds 12 arrow carts at a gate then chances are nothings going to come ramming through that way anyway pre or post patch.
Thanks everyone on AR border tonight. Absolutely brilliant fights all around.
There’s so much negativity on the wvw forums with threads about arrow cart buff complaining / defense balls hiding in towers is the future of wvw / wvw is dying etc. etc.
Yet tonight was filled with aggressive play, bold pushes and no shirking away from a fight from everyone we encountered. TUP, NR, FURY, IC, TDA, JDGE, the AR puggies, the rest of my YaK buddies and anyone else that tagged along, thanks for restoring my faith in wvw.
@TUP hope you apriciated us letting you onto shore for a fight

/wave @ AR
you can have Riverside back T3, just don’t let them near Hills
thief shortbow skills are much more fun and feel a lot more dynamic than ranger & warrior bow skills imo.
~ 50 silver / day from wvw.
thief was my first character too, zooming around the map using infiltrator’s arrow is so much fun

It’s GOOD for WvW just like ninja catas or ram teams. Hopefully it teaches you why pure zergs with no roaming/scouting is bad. Or why the inability to communicate across maps will lose you objectives.
I think the ability of a small but organized group to ninja objectives from a clearly disorganized and zergy opponent is fun, yes.
It’s fun defending Against golems as well and knowing your opponent has golems on the map and having to watch for them. Keeps things exciting.
was about to post but this summed it up nicely.
always be weary if lots of camps start flipping
I climbed a hill in Queensdale and suddenly realised how amazing Divinity’s Reach looks from the other side of the zone. Too much focus on beating up bandits for 8 months!
gts to AG, lets hope next week is another close one!
Yay for EU arrogance and assuming this is all about NA. Ever hear of the continent to the South? You know South America? That big land mass that is not part of the US or NA.
There’s also quite a large land mass below Europe called ‘Africa’. Geography is great isn’t it!
If you’re upset about the change take it out on Arena Net, not the whole of the European player base.
I don’t think i’ve seen any complain about PVDoor at all in this thread (well maybe some troll but you know them, they like to……troll :P ).
You know better that every single server in this tier has “nightcapped” each other at some point but everyone should be happy that our (all 3 servers) night forces aren’t anything game-breaking like in the tier above ours.
We (Gandara) know that we suck big time during the weekend but at least we keep fighting even when we have a gap of 30k points from the first spot which, in fact, is keeping our tier the most balanced one between both EUs and NAs.
I do think that this week was interesting, hopefully it was like this for all the 3 servers involved. Remember that you can’t have fun alone and you need the other two parties involved to keep things interesting.
English isn’t my main nor the best language i do speak so please deal with me

Spot on!
I’m so glad Aurora have been a lot stronger than last week. Whatever the drama, qq, and rubbish that gets posted on the forums this is by far the most competitive tier in GW2.
from another thread I posted in:
STAT ALERT!
Since the beginning of the year in Gandara’s matches Green has a 50% win ratio, which is pretty competitive considering Green should be winning 100% of their matches as they will always have the higher rating. The chance of a ‘blowout’ (over 20k lead for Green) is 25% since the beginning of the year. Just check out the recent results in T3 / 4, often decided on the final 36 hours.
30/3 – 06/4 T4
1st Gandara – 220 449
2nd Baruch Bay – 209 332
3rd Aurora Glade – 186 834
23/03 – 30/04 T4
1st Gandara – 212 799
2nd Aurora Glade – 201 894
3rd Far Shiverpeaks – 189 955
16/03 – 23/03 T3
1st Piken Square – 222 724
2nd Augury Rock – 204 246
3rd Gandara – 189 023
09/03 – 16/03 T3
1st Gandara – 209 543
2nd Piken Square – 205 970
3rd Augury Rock – 197 343
TL-DR
Mid Tier EU is awesome <3
Love it!
Euro mid Tiers and T4 in particular has always been very competitive, Riverside (Green) have lost a 20k lead from the weekend so I wouldn’t be suprised if Aurora Glade or Gandara overtake them. We’re pretty lucky that there are 4 or 5 servers very close in coverage and quality (Aurora Glade, Gandara, Riverside, Baruch Bay and now Augury Rock and Far Shiverpeaks are in the mix) so usually our matchups are close as hell.

I still would think that European players are only marginally getting helped with it. Isn’t reset still going to be at 12am in England and later in other European timezones?
Goes from 1:15 to 23:15 in the UK, which is massive not marginal.
Brilliant stuff, our guild’s reset numbers have shrunk to just the insomniacs since the clock changes a couple of weeks ago. This should make resets a lot more fun and interesting for the majority of servers.
On a different note It was great fun keeping Gandara guilds like Duis YaK xXx IC WvW busy for over 2 hours. While you get self obsessed with the wanting to kill or re-claim the camp. you was not busy claiming other keeps or towers. It was a lot of fun and I am sure both servers had lots of lootbags to gain.
Revenge for us tonight at AG Hills while Riverside capped your stuff
Everyone just stop arguing and go watch the video Hoax posted. A nice epic openfield fight!
Thanks and much respect to Yak!
cheers. not our greatest fight, looks like lots of work to be done our side. Well played, FURY have gotten a lot stronger as a unit since we were last in T4 which is great to see.
Ugh, ofcourse Gandara does their signature golem rush again…
Just by this golem rush I can predict what this week will look like.
Gandara is currently in 3rd place and to get to 2nd place, they will focus AG. Because they do this, AG will retaliate on Gandara, resulting in a relatively uncontested victory for the third party: Riverside.
Nevertheless I will keep fighting and doing everything I can to help AG to the victory here. We have had one of the best weekends in the past months and I am amazed in how much improvement we have made as a server over the past few weeks. Now the emotions have calmed down and we’re all on the same side again, it’s time to fight the enemies instead of ourselves. I still think we still have a very good chance of winning this matchup. If winning involves wiping Gandara over and over again until they stop golem rushing us, I will personally command to do so.
Good luck everyone, I’ve had the most fun weekend in a long time in WvW, I hope you all can agree to that. I’ll see you on the battlefield and may the best server get the victory.
I like the way you come to the conclusion that AG and Gandara should focus on Riverside for a closer matchup and then say in the next paragraph that you’ll be focusing your AG forces on Gandara going forward.
I don’t think you do justice to Aurora Glade for this week’s performance. You may expect more but this game is a numbers game and also we don’t have many WvWvW focused guilds that cover with events 24/7 all maps.
Maybe, but it was a lot closer last week which is why the people claiming it is purely ‘wvw population’ reason for AG to go from 20k behind 1st last week to 100k this week need to possibly look at other factors and do something about it.
As mentioned earlier AG might get some new faces so no more reeling out population excuses! It’ll be our turn to moan about it
(edited by Space.8053)
I can’t remember AG being top potential point scorers at hardly any periods this week, so unless you were being double teamed 24/7 I would suggest the lack of coverage / lower morale / too much zerging when you have the numbers to hit multiple locations is more to blame than anything else. With a few more guilds joining AG hopefully you can get closer to our coverage and we can have some good tight future battles.
BB have had crazy numbers on most maps at most times, they have been the powerhouse this week and will deservedly win by a big margin.
I am glad this Build is working for you =D, and switching traits to better suit your preference is also a part of character building. The boon duration is definitely to more well rounded and most recommended build. I run the Lyssa build now, due to the extreme bursts I can pump out when I pop Signet of rage. I love the ability to be semi-tanky and durable while bringing out massive bursts from no where, and still have some good support for my team through Aoe CC and Damage.
tested it out in wvw and it works a treat for a lot of situations. I had to mix and match trinkets due to not wanting to splash out on laurels – see below.
loss of toughness from the jewel substitutes might be an issue, plus i’m on a budget so slightly worse food buffs but still just about allows a full upkeep of SoR boons.
(edited by Space.8053)
basically greatsword is your bread and butter pve weapon.
might stacking is a really easy and popular approach – stick 20 in arms and pick the trait Forceful Greatsword trait (1 might on critical)
if you combine it with signet of rage, ‘for great justice’ and some boon % increase runes you can run around with 25 might stacks pretty easily.
leaves you tons of trait points and utilities for anything you like really, although you may find it very boring and ridiculously easy after a while.
Ah Zumy caused my post to be deleted! The troublemaker!
Mad fights in AG bay last night. We were in a bit of a sandwich, whoever managed to get on one of the 8 arrowcarts can probably put their guild wars kids through college after that fight!
Welcome to Glam Wars 2
Guild Wardrobes 2
if you want to go greatsword, specing into a bit of precision is the way to go due to Forceful Greatsword (Might on critical) trait. You can get to 25 stacks of Might really easily on bosses (equates to 875 power) if you have some boon length increasing runes. Warriors have easy access to Fury (20% critical chance) as well which makes landing a critical strike and getting a might stack a lot easier too.
As mentioned before knight’s is a great gear setup for greatsword starters because it gives you a nice mix of defensive and offensive stats. If you are more confident of staying alive you can mix beserker’s gear into your setup. its all a personal thing really.
a fishy story if ever I heard one.
this has no plaice in the forums.
im guessing if they removed the contested from the waypoint they would have to remove contested from the keep from wall shots, meaning you could stealth treb as much as you like.
i’d rather have the wp contested than find sm riddled with holes in the walls and to be able to be capped without any warning.
yes it is annoying but it is still useful. otherwise noone would bother to buy the upgrade.
the more i think about it the more i agree that the aoe limit would help, although you’ll find everyone running staff eles lol. although i still think ‘zerging’ is still a valid way to go about playing it can be countered and is inefficient. apologies if i sounded condescending in my earlier post.
yes. the ‘best’ servers all agree that zerging is the greatest and only viable strategy.
splitting up hitting multiple spots, flipping camps, starving supply, defending with siege, upgrading keeps / towers / camps, opportunistic double teaming, hiding mesmers, yeah none of that is important at all.
going solo on ranger is tough in these wxp train times in wvw. you’re only going to achieve so much solo before you come across a fight you cannot win, it’s just the nature of wvw. groups of 2,3,4 even 5 thieves spawn camping are quite a common sight because they can safely go about their business and stay stealthed for as long as they like.
just accept that some 1v2 fights are going to be unwinnable because they will just revive each other once downed, and enjoy the challenge if you do decide to take them on.
OP forgetting the first 2 rules of fight club.
Taking off your chest and boot armour pieces should be mandatory!
im not a big fan of wvw progression as its spawned obsessed wxp trains who only care what rank they instead of actually helping the server, however i recognize that it is crucial to keep people interested in the format.
extra skins, extra wxp rank options in time would be nice i suppose.
thieves also have good utilities like ambush, caltrops, shadow refuge and thieves guild which helps a lot when soloing camps. Once finished swap back to your stealth build, jobs a goodun.
might stacking g/s builds are far too effective for how easy they are to play in my opinion. a nerf to 100 blades and / or forceful greatsword (put a cooldown on might stacking) would be a start, maybe compensate by removing the root on 100 blades.
currently if I want pve stuff to be done quick and easy i turn to g/s warrior. I wouldn’t say the warrior as a profession is overpowered in pve, other weapon sets seem pretty balanced in pve. I’m guessing the vast majority of warrior pve players stopped caring about any other weapon other than the greatsword at a very early level.
i was playing around with buildcraft to get my warrior out of his G/S pve shackles and into wvw so i played around with your builds.
I really liked the second boon increased build you posted. I made a minor tweak taking 5 out of discipline (losing immobilize breaker but i normally run wvw with larger guild groups where group condition removals are more available) and sticking it in defense. End result is 5% less crit damage & .5% burst on the earthshaker but an extra 92 power, 50 toughness and 50 healing power. Probably going to stick to this until I get more used to earthshaking everything.
I also subbed out some of the utilities running endure pain, fear me and sig of stamina as again i was more into group fighting than 1v1s, but it feels great so far.
6/10 – Not really sure how to pronounce it
Russell Sprout – Necro
A lot of the ‘boredom’ for me comes in the difficulty in testing builds in pve / wvw. You basically need a ton of cash & inventory space to play around with builds and stats. The whole trait system really forces people into one style of play. I know it is a minimal cost to re-trait, but how many people actually do this? I’m guessing the vast majority stick to one set of traits and never change out.
Something that always bothers me about GW2 is the lack of diversity / encouragement to experiment across the board. I’d love to try out a MM build for pve, a well condition build for wvw and a power build for dungeons but needing three complete armour and jewelry sets for each build is stopping me. I might as well pick one and just play through all the content one way, which means I get insanely bored with the class without even trying out the majority of skills or builds.
sPvP is a different kettle of fish but still with only one game type I can imagine build diversity is pretty rare.
As for the necro itself being ‘boring’, I can’t really comment as I have only played condition builds due to all of the above.
lovely night on fsp border for us YaKs, plenty of repairs were had by all i think lol.
gg all.

I did chuckle at the omnom food tray laid out and the merchant at gandara hills, now they are ours to feast on, haha in your face AG !
Numbers are still madness though on all sides. Not enjoying it one bit. Hopefully when the dust settles the people who actually play for the fun of it will still linger on and the people intent on grinding titles like zombies will die off.
That extra 5 supply cap wont mean anything if you cant press f quick enough flipping camps lol
@Endemonadia
You QQ in every kittening Thread about blobbing not just here
It was ‘nightcapping’ last week lol
also like to add people who refresh siege
joining a guild of like minded people can improve your enjoyment vastly. check out the guilds section of this website or fan sites and check out the ones you like the sound of
you can always guest on seemingy higher populated pve servers (Desolation and Gandara spring to mind) if the area in gunnars is feeling a bit lonely. the pve population seem to migrate depending on the daily quests (such as Ascalon events / Shiverpeak kills etc) so it might be worth checking these areas out on those particular days.
remember to get some lvl 80 underwater gear, you don’t want to be stuck with your starter breathing mask
