I have a Charzooka, so I am extremely happy. I cannot imagine what you other races must suffer through, not having access to it.

I’ve found the one that makes you immune for a bit and resets your virtues to be quite useful in certain situations. I was happy with it, especially combined with traits that boost the virtues. I’m saving up skill points to get the tome of wrath now, but I doubt it will be nearly as funny as the Charzooka.

I really, really hate not being able to do anything about vicious and misogynist things like that. Even if you never take down a post, reporting it makes me feel better, like I have a say.

Why is coin used as a currency in WvW?

There are lots of gathering nodes in WvW. Have you tried using those to fund your PVP?

There are also lots of dynamic events in PVP, as long as you fight at an objective instead of in the middle of nowhere. Defending or attacking both provide rewards even if you don’t manage to take or keep your objective. While the money from these events isn’t huge, when I’ve played WvW it’s been enough for me to at least break even. The daily jump puzzle also gives you some rewards, though I don’t remember how easy those are to monetize.

human character creation: hair

I’d like to request that at least one additional hairstyle be added to human female character creation: a natural-looking African American hair style. All of the existing hair styles seem very Caucasian or possibly Asian. There are lots possible options, ranging from something that is simply very close-cut and near-bald to an elaborate braided style.

The hair styles that you have for the human females are lovely, but none of them reflect the special hair styles that are traditionally associated with someone of African descent.

While you certainly aren’t under any obligation to make the game all-inclusive, I think an addition like this would allow the creation of more realistic black human female characters. I’m sure it would also help at least a few minority gamers make characters that they can closely identify with. There’s also plenty of in-game precedence for it, including lore. There are at least a few stereotypically “black” hairdos available to the men of some races that I’ve seen. In GW1, this was handled well for many of the NPCs in Elona, which is based heavily on African culture.

[minor] Dyes and gloves

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Sparkie.3465

On lots of gear, there are 2-3 different “dye spots” for selecting your gear colors. The first dye spot is usually the primary coloring of the gear piece. The second spot normally controls some major detail color, and the third spot usually controls some minor detail colors. For example, on chest armor, I would expect spot 1 to control the color of my blouse. I would expect spot 2 to control sleeve fringes color and belt color. I would expect spot 3 to control belt buckle color. You get the idea.

With gloves, this general pattern seems completely broken. I have numerous pairs of gloves where Spot 1 doesn’t do anything. Spot 2 controls the glove color. Spot 3 also doesn’t do anything. I see this on boots as well.

If any of you mods are around, is this the kind of thing you’d like to have specific bug reports about? Or just a general heads-up that gloves usually have more dye color spots than actual colored areas? I’m kind of leery of filing bug reports for each piece of gear I encounter this on, simply because I’m afraid I will swamp you with reports and accidentally duplicate my bug reports as I level multiple characters.

Hey, I just experienced the same thing. I sold an amulet for 3 g on the spot, with 15 silver fee, and an orichalcum filligree for 14 silver. When I logged on about six-seven hours later I have 2g 70 silver in the pick up…

No. You just discovered that there is a 10% sales tax that isn’t clearly listed on the trading post. There is a 5% posting fee, your 14 silver. Then there is an additional 10% sales tax fee that gets deducted from your profit if the item sells. Thus there is a 15% fee in total for items sold on the trading post. This sales tax is listed on the wiki and discussed all over the forums, but not yet clearly spelled out on the TP.

The OP is discussing a different problem. Unfortunately, I don’t know whether his problem is real, a bug, failure to take the sales tax into account, or a misremembered sale. I have not personally left my money in the trading post long enough to test this.

I don't "get" Crafting

in Crafting

Sparkie.3465

What crafting are you doing? Tailoring is the only one that suffers this problem, and that’s only because the market for cloth (the drop rate) is way out of step with all the other crafting materials.

Also, it’s foolish and harmful to consider the market your enemy in crafting. The market is your friend. If you do insist on tailoring, then you should sell the excess materials you obtain from your other gathering professions to buy the extra items that you need. Pro-tip: once you no longer gain skill points from making intermediate items, buy them. At that point, sell off your excess raw materials. I don’t think any player in the game should ever need to make a green dowel or copper hook again – the market is flooded with them. The market is flooded with many of the 1-75 crafting components. Use those to your advantage, to do it more cheaply than those who went before you.

And goodness gracious do not make any 8-slot bags! Waste of your low-level materials. Don’t make any of the bigger bags either, for that matter.

@Landrief: Does what apply to trays of strawberry cookies? I do not understand what you are asking. Yes, you get recipes for mass production of food via mystic forge. I have no idea what the price comparison is between those recipes and an equivalent number of individual cookies. That is complicated by an additional wrinkle – most food is priced well under production cost on the trading post right now. Additionally, I think these mass-produced foods might be feast-type items instead of just a box of individual cookies (though I am not positive, the descriptions are vague and I haven’t made them myself).

I looked up strawberry cookies and it appears that they provide you with a +healing buff. Unless you know something about healing coefficients that I don’t, I suggest that you buy nearly any other food at all on the trading post for your buff food. Even if you are heavily playing support, you’ll probably get more benefit from vitality or even magic find. I would bet a gold that these are going for much less than strawberries on the trading post, and are thus better to buy than to mass produce.

You can counter the strategy by mercilessly killing the NPC that your opponent is counting on for a rally. If someone takes this approach with you, either try to use more AOE so that their rally reserve is eliminated, or less AoE so that you don’t help them whittle the rally NPC down to a sliver of health.

Under your system, I see a very real risk of obtaining over 250 pebbles. I would be very, very annoyed if I had to give up more of my bank slots to the items used for transmutation. As it is, using the low-level stones that I get with abandon, I seem to gain them much faster than I can use them up. I am sure that there are many people with a different play style that are scrounging for these items – but for people like me they already take up more room than I prefer. Right now, I will delete these if I get more than 250 of them without remorse, but I would be much more hesitant to do that if a full stack also represented a mere 31 max-level transmutes.

It also sounds like you’re trying to make it easier to get the max-level transmute stones. I’m pretty sure that they want you to spend some real money to get that privilege. Thus this would likely undercut the whole purpose of the max-level transmute stones as a funding mechanism. Less funding for Anet → less skins for the future to transmute onto stuff.

It sounds to me like you played the market game and lost.

You predicted that the market for level 80 goods would stay flat. You also didn’t diversify your holdings and focused only on these level 80 goods. You were wrong and you did nothing to hedge your bets or maintain any liquidity. You are clearly unfamiliar both with MMOs and with market games, and that is okay. This is your learning moment.

However, instead of learning, you ask for no penalty for your mistake, or a penalty that you can wait out trivially.

That’s not much of a game, then, is it?

Part of the market game is the very real possibility of being completely wiped out if you screw it up. It’s not like other parts of the MMO, where you can never hurt yourself too badly or lose too much progress.

Rule One of the Market Game: Never bet more than you can afford to lose.

Rule Two of the Market Game: Buy low, sell high.

Levels don’t go from 1 to 80. I know that’s a hard concept to get if you didn’t play the original Guild Wars. You keep on leveling after 80. You don’t gain any stats, but you do gain skill points for each level.

Those skill points are a currency. They are not just a mechanism to slowly gain utilities. They can be used to buy things, arguably very desirable things. You would be a fool to throw away a single point of experience on purpose if you intend to play this game for a while.

Stop trying to slow down your leveling. You can enjoy the low-level zones, your friend’s storyline quests, and the lower-level dungeons just as much at level 80 as you do at level 5. Leveling up helps somewhat, in that you gain traits and you gain new utilities, but those do not trivialize the low-level areas. If you want to be cowed by a low-level area, go say hello to the infamous fire elemental in Metrica. It burns the level 80 players to ash just as surely as it burns the level 10s.

Embrace your XP, revel in it. To throw it away is as fool-hearty as destroying gold or burning gems.

Phedre, could you tell us your level and give us a rough idea of how long you have between service interruptions? We could probably give you a better idea on how to proceed with more information.

Also, I suggest that, if you really care that deeply about the monthly, you might be putting too high of a value on it. It’s worth about 40 silver worth of stuff and 3% of your current XP bar right now. That’s pretty easy to make up for in a play session, even an interrupted play session.

If you are really determined to do it, though, I do have a potential solution. Take a trip to a more metropolitan area and set yourself up in an internet-enabled area for a few hours. Obviously, I don’t know where you live and I don’t know how long such a trip would take you. Your local library or community college might be an option. Coffee shops and many restaurants are another option. Maybe a friend or local family member has better internet and might put up with you for an afternoon (pro tip: pay for a meal for your host if you do this to compensate for internet-mooching).

As another tip, MMOs are not really a good hobby for someone without stable internet and power. You will only frustrate yourself. It’s like taking up fishing in the desert. Perhaps you should be more concerned with obtaining stable access to electricity first and think about MMOs later – your priorities seem a bit out of whack at the moment.

The game you are looking for is called Fable. It is also called Black and White. Dungeon Keeper (no choice there, though, and it’s old enough that I doubt it runs on anything). Any of the Elder Scrolls games from Morrowind to Skyrim. This game also goes by the name Grand Theft Auto. It goes by a dozen other different names as well. It even exists in many different mediums – it was called Dungeons and Dragons before computers were a common household item.

This game, however, is not GW2. There is nothing inherently wrong with the game you have described – but you cannot make a game that is every thing to every person. GW2 has chosen a different course, and if it were to try to adopt to your preferences, it would no longer be GW2. This would be as monumental a change in the game as making it single player or making it an XBOX game, perhaps more so.

BLTP - remove the price floors

in Suggestions

Posted by: Sparkie.3465

Sparkie.3465

Right now, when one sells a piece of gear at the trading post, there is a price floor. If a piece of gear is worth 1 silver to a vendor NPC, then you cannot post that gear for anything less than 1sp 1cp on the trading post.

I am not sure how hard this price floor is. I have seen buy orders that are lower than the price floor, and I do not know if those are considered valid buy orders (if not, why are they there?) or if those are some sort of lingering bug.

I wish to propose that the price floor be removed entirely. I can see the value of retaining a warning – a warning that can be disabled in the options – that tells you whenever you are posting an item for less than the vendor price.

My guess is that the current price floor was introduced either to try to limit trading of worthless items, or to protect players from themselves. In its current incarnation, the price floor does not server either of these purposes well! If you take that price floor away, then items will be bought simply to be sold to vendors, or to be salvaged. That opens up a market for this stuff! It opens up a way to get rid of it, whereas now it simply seems to be slowly building up. It also will, in time, be a better way to deter people from posting every piece of junk they find – eventually the price of all the junk armor will drop so low that many people will consider it too much of a loss and vendor their garbage themselves. I am no economist, but I suspect this would temporarily increase item churn on the TP but dramatically reduce the total number of items on it at any single point in time. That may or may not be helpful to your stability issues – I have no idea.

The price floor also doesn’t serve much protective function right now. One could argue that it saves people from themselves. I am not sure that this was the design of the price floor, because then items would have a price floor at ~1.18 times the vendor price, instead of vendor price + 1 cp. As currently designed, when you sell items at the vendor price on the TP, you lose 5% of your money to a posting fee and another 10% to taxes if the item sells. The people posting items at vendor costs are already losing money. You haven’t protected them. You haven’t even told them, explicitly, about the 10% sales tax yet (though most of them have hopefully noticed by now). Have some faith in your players, and let them set the point where the TP is a convenient place to get rid of junk vs. where they’d prefer to go to a vendor instead.

If I have misjudged the point of the price floor, and it is actually an anti-gold-seller measure, then I still implore you to remove the price floor. Let the gold sellers try to outmaneuver the actual players who want to corner these kinds of markets! I have some faith that the players are smarter, are able to devote more time and effort to the markets as a hobby than the gold-sellers can afford as a business. A significant minority of the player base recognizes and hates gold sellers, and will make it a hobby just to try to harm them. Besides that, measures you take internally to block external gold sellers will be what makes or breaks their market – the means they use to gather gold in your game is not nearly as consequential. In fact, less gold sellers in the field annoying players with bots might have merits of its own.

I saw a reference to these boxed armor sets in another thread nearer to release. From that thread, it seemed that the boxed armor set crafting recipe comes from a mystic forge recipe. The thread recounted some discrepancy in the cost of the set vs. the cost of making individual items – at the time, the cost of the set was much, much higher than the cost of the individual crafted pieces that it was composed of. There was a red post vowing to bring the costs closer together, as they were intended to be very similar in cost.

The mystic forge recipe to create the boxed set of armor recipe is, from the wiki: elonian wine, crystal, mystic coin, crafted chest of the set you wish to make. The quantities allegedly vary depending on the quality of the set you intend to make.

Don’t make the recipe right now. Don’t make the boxed armor set, either. The material costs are wrong and will be corrected in some future patch.

Mystic Clovers Ruining Legendary Weapon?

Sparkie.3465

Why do you think magic find gear will help with this kind of thing? You are going to get an item out of the mystic forge. That’s guaranteed. Why would magic find push the odds in favor of clovers particularly? Do you have anything to base this off of? If it is possible that the magic find influences the chance of producing clovers, couldn’t it just as easily be reducing your odds of getting clovers as increasing it?

The idea behind magic find is that it increases your odds to get magic items as random drops off mobs. You aren’t guaranteed anything off the mob at all, and the mob can produce more than one item. It’s a completely different beast when you are guaranteed an item already from a recipe, and it’s dangerous to make assumptions that you are improving your odds.

This problem applied to every item I tried to purchase, which ranged across about 10 different types of items. I tried completely restarting the client, I tried changing characters, and I tried waiting several hours. I never received an error of any sort.

I am quite sure that during this time period, the trading post itself was up and running normally for other players. My room mate bought one of the items that I was unable to purchase.

In case it is relevant, I was trying to buy small quantities (10 or less) of low level buff foods, like cinnamon rolls, 8-slot iron boxes, 10-slot bags, copper rings, copper accessories, and an adept’s training manual. The room mate successfully bought the training manuals after I was unable to do so and did not test the other items listed.

Scrap healing power

Sparkie.3465

So far, healing power doesn’t seem to be a well-understood or highly desired stat. The handful of tests I’ve seen on it indicates that the scaling probably makes it hard to justify on gear in place of most other stats. Many of the hardcore support players seem to prefer vitality, so they live longer, or potentially toughness.

Maybe healing power is just fine and we haven’t let it even out at level 80 yet. Maybe lots more people than I know are using healing gear. However, if my general impressions are correct and this stat is getting ignored by the vast majority of players of all types, then I have a suggestion.

Just scrap healing as a stat. You can retain some stat for healing abilities to scale with but nix the unused gear stat.

At current, I suggest you simply make healing depend on toughness. Vitality might be a better choice thematically, but vitality seems popular enough not to need a “buff.” You could consider making regeneration based off the condition stat, since it applied over time. Or, you could simply make healing power some appropriate percentage of the “power” stat – though I think this would be a mistake since everyone will want to take power anyway, and it might just make everyone much more powerful defensively.

To clarify, I don’t think that healing in general needs to be more powerful. I have no idea how it’s doing relative to the design goals. I do think that there’s a throwaway stat right now in the form of healing power, and that should probably be rectified without making everyone substantially stronger. You could also just junk the stat and not add a replacement, so that people aren’t even remotely tempted to try to put together a “healing” character. Then you just have to make sure you’re happy with the base scaling of all the healing spells, and rethink some traits.

Oficial RP servers. How hard is to make?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sparkie.3465

Sparkie.3465

I think the RP community is better off on their own. I played on an “RP server” in WoW for several years – Feathermoon. The only thing that made it an RP server was the community of RP players. After classic, there was only very limited enforcement of RP naming conventions and that was purely player-driven reporting efforts. The RP community was still only a very small percentage of the overall server population. Most people who encountered role-play at random in towns would stop and stare at the oddity of it, or ask the role player if something was wrong. Most talk, in all game channels, was not in-character. A handful of guilds had in-character guild chat, of course enforced only by the community.

The RP community shouldn’t expect non-RP players to play according to their conventions. The RP community shouldn’t expect that GW2 will enforce their preferences on others. It is not practical, not in this game and not in any other that’s open to anyone who wants to buy the game. RP communities can only exist when they are community-organized and community-policed, and every member of that community is a willing member.

I’m happy that the RP communities exist. I’m happy that they enjoy what they do. But they really must stop expecting that someone in authority will force others to play in their style. It will never work as a business model. Please let other people enjoy the game their way, too. It’d be just as foolish to create a “Trader Only” world where all TP prices had to be sensible from a purely economical point of view, or a “PVE only” world that didn’t participate at all in WvWvW rankings or allow sPVP participation.

The currency exchange interface

Sparkie.3465

I suspect that the currency exchange interface is clunky by design to try to prevent automated price tracking. If this is not the case, I’d like to suggest some improvements to make it less painful to deal with so that I am more likely to throw money at you.

Please list the current exchange rate. I’m fine with you listing a small range for this rate, or telling me what the rate was a few hours ago, or requiring me to push a button or enter a captcha to find the rate. Give me a ballpark number, please. I don’t like the guess-and-check method just to get an idea of the price for 100 gems.

Please either list the max, min, and average down to CP or remove the CP field. I can tell you’re rounding, and I don’t mind that. I mind that there’s a field for cp that you clearly aren’t using – it’s always rounded to the nearest silver. You could probably snip off the field for gp until it is actually needed, too. Showing all those zeros is bad form.

The graph: Please rescale the window if this is supposed to be something players should be able to read. The Y-scale is huge compared to the fluctuations; instead, the scale should reflect the range of variation in the graph closely. Simplify your labels on the X-axis and please make them accurate. For me, at least, the X-axis shows data that is listed for future times, so I assume it’s probably off by a couple hours for some reason. The graph colors don’t contrast well and the graph seems to be partially transparent, which makes it even harder to read. My colorblind room mate can’t read the thing at all, and I am tired of squinting at it to try to describe current trends to him.

If you’re going to keep ~5 days worth of data on the graph, give us some eye-guiding marks across the screen for major ticks on the Y-axis. I’d like to see a line for every silver or possibly every 2 silver going all the way across the graph, so I can actually gauge price fluctuations.

If you’re super-concerned about people automatically reading this data, then just don’t give it to us at all.

Mainly I think they want more cloth drops. Butter is the scapegoat for cloth.

I’d like to make a pitch for fishing, here. Add fishing into the game. Fishing should basically be a gathering method for salvageable items. Ruined Fishing Net, Old Boot, Tattered Sail Fragment… you get the idea. This should include salvage items that turn into cloth or leather. Actual fish should be an incidental addition – the main purpose is just for creative salvage material. Maybe toss some appropriate sea-based items on the drop table as well, like clams, coral, and so on. Zone-based drop table – this allows you to go collect your jute in the 1-15 zones on a reliable basis but still get high-level cloth in high-level zones.

Yes, you’ll probably need to tinker with other drop rates to keep them in line with what you want the economy to look like. It’d take a lot of the player annoyance away from tailoring and leather working, though.

Predictions for next 1 week matchup?

in WvW

Posted by: Sparkie.3465

Sparkie.3465

I think that, depending on how they tally up points, there will be a major shift in brackets beyond what you expect. It depends on how reliable they consider their earlier data to be.

I’m in the 7th bracket, out of 8 total. My server (Ehmry Bay) is completely destroying our two opponents. The overall score was roughly 10 to 1 yesterday.

In the lower brackets, everyone who’s interested in WvW across three servers have transferred to one server. Our queue times are low partially because the maps are so lopsided – it is difficult to find a fight. There are few chances to gain karma or badges, because the other two sides aren’t participating.

This means that there’s a good chance we’ll be moved up multiple brackets, against opponents that we (probably) aren’t really prepared for with more consistent WvW presence. We certainly won’t end up in the top 3 brackets (unless the accounting is very skewed!), but I could see us jumping up to bracket 4 or 5 under some assumptions. If we jump by that much, there’s a good chance that people in the 4-5-6 bracket will be jumping up to 2-3 as well.

Similarly, if you are one of the servers that isn’t doing too well in the #2 bracket, I think it’s quite possible you’ll fall into the #4 or #5 bracket.

Glicko ratings just won’t work when our team is now a combination of the two teams we were playing against at the beginning of a week, as well as our original player group. If they weigh past information very heavily, then you may be right – but that won’t accurately reflect the changes that have happened in the last week very well.

I can assure you that if the brackets shuffle only slightly, the people who’ve been on the losing side of WvWvW won’t even show up to try to fight and we’ll get a lot of lopsided matches again.

They should scrap the Glicko ratings for now and pair us all up based on the population graphs. Wipe the Glicko score, start over when server transfers are somewhat constrained, and then try again.

It takes some time and practice to pick out a likely building to defend, and it might take some money to upgrade the keep defenses or to buy a blueprint so that you have the siege weapon. When things go right, though, you can get those kills really fast without much time invested.

No, COD is not inevitable. The devs do not want you to trade one-on-one with anyone. They want you to use the marketplace. To that end, they have made the marketplace accessible anywhere. They have added gem-store items that allow you to pick up your trade goods anywhere. They’ve put Black Lion agents all over the world, too.

I prefer the dev’s design. Yes, inflation is inevitable, but that isn’t the only reason COD is barred. COD is barred to prevent trade chat from dominating and washing out all other conversations in the big cities. COD is barred to prevent scams, scams that scare off new players and damage trusting players. Once the trading post is stabilized, there will be no compelling reason for COD. You’re only hoping it’s implemented because you (wrongly) assume it would be free of the 15% fee, or because you want to scam people. There’s no reason to implement it without the 15% fee, you know.

Why make so many items soulbound instead of account-bound?

They have stated elsewhere that they want to convert karma recipes to be account-bound in the near future.

I do agree that they need to go through items that are soulbound and re-evaluate whether or not they should be account-bound instead. I especially do not understand why salvage kits are account-bound but gathering tools are soulbound. I was dismayed to find that blueprints are soulbound and it has deterred me from doing any more PVP jump puzzles, lest my slots fill with blueprints.

Idea: incorporate fishing into a festival sport, much like the current keg brawl (keg football?) in the Norn city. I note that the Sylvari have a decent amount of water sitting around their city.

I’d still love to have fishing as a separate “gathering” endeavor or mini-game or activity for quiet contemplation, but a fishing tournament or competition would perhaps be more in the spirit of GW2.

Can't see the forums when logged out

I can’t see the forums unless I log in. I keep getting redirected to a log-in page. If this is intentional, it really shouldn’t be. Of course, only people who are logged in should be able to post to the forums. However, people who don’t have a guild wars account may have a genuine interest in reading the forums to learn about how the game works and what players think of it.

Additionally, sometimes I like to browse the forums without logging in. I might be somewhere that I’m concerned about entering my password in, but still want to read forums. For example, I don’t really want to log in to read the forums when I’m in a random seedy hotel or a busy coffee shop or an airport. Someone might be looking over my shoulder, maybe I’m at a public computer where I have a reasonable expectation of keyloggers. I still want my guild wars fix via the forums, but I certainly can’t log in to play or to post to the forums.

All games should have fishing. There is an illustrious history of fishing in all sorts of games. If it was good enough for the Zelda franchise, it is good enough for Guild Wars!

Less money than selling to NPC?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Sparkie.3465

Sparkie.3465

Yes, they are selling the item for less profit than they would make if they sold it to an NPC.

They get a value out of it – empty bag space while in the field. I, personally, wouldn’t want to spend a few cp for a bag space constantly, but apparently other people do.

There’s one way for players to “combat” it. Once the materials you can salvage are worth more than the item, buy and salvage the item. That isn’t going to happen any time soon, but perhaps in the future it will become an issue for cloth as more of the population reaches 80. There are game changes that could change this, including raising the minimum posting price in the TP or disabling the TP in the field, but I don’t personally like either of those ideas.

Your random blues and greens aren’t worth anything. They will likely never be worth anything. 1 cp undercutting doesn’t kill the market for items with a healthy demand and supply. It kills the market for things with a huge supply and little demand.

If the market says your item is worthless, then the item is worthless right now. Find something else to sell.

Guardian Races

Charrzooka is so much fun.

For those unfamiliar with it, it has a spammable single-target range damage for button #1 (I think it has splash damage, but honestly I’m too busy cackling when I pull this out to notice). Button #2 is a range opener that knocks back most of the enemies in a cone in front of you. Button #3 is a high damage heat-seeking missle – you have to remain stationary while casting it. #4 is another range-opener that propels you backwards by shooting the ground directly beneath you. #5 is a targeted AoE barrage of rockets.

Its damage is pretty respectable. I can take out a veteran or get it very low on health, without taking much or any damage myself. Health bars melt before it. It’s very nice in WvW against single players, small groups of players, or in large battles. It’s also a handy escape if you need to get away from someone or something – since we don’t have a lot of simple gap openers it fills a nice niche there.

And I really want to emphasize that it is so fun to use. I’m sure there are probably better damage abilities out there – but they don’t have rockets.

Guardian and condition damage

in Guardian

Sparkie.3465

I think the bigger overall issue with condition damage is that it isn’t very useful in group play as currently implemented, while Guardian is a very strong group-play support profession. If you play a guardian for group support (I’m thinking about PVE here), condition damage doesn’t seem to be worthwhile.

I don’t have any idea how this pans out in sPVP whatsoever. In WvW, it seems like a guardian is not going to be applying much condition damage because it requires us to get up-close and personal. In 1v1 the burn is useful, but I don’t personally do WvW to seek out 1v1 battles. In solo play, I don’t really see burn damage being better than a greatsword crit to the face in 9 out of 10 cases, but it probably has a place when soloing large boss mobs.

Where do I get Wool at 80?

As far as I know, you can drop 4x of the vendor items into the mystic forge still. It’s a less efficient way to go, but it does allow you to convert karma gear or vendor-bought gear to salvageable items. I don’t know if there are combinations that improve your odds of getting a certain armor class so that you could more easily obtain wool specifically.

I’m happy to wait for bag prices to crash. My 8-slots do me just fine in the meantime. There are vendors everywhere, so I don’t quite understand how so many people have such massive inventory issues. Sell it, salvage it, equip it, or TP it and move on, people!

If you’re a forge junkie and that’s why you hang on to so much stuff, then get a portable forge.

Gem prices total free fall

Sparkie.3465

When I last looked, there were two rather substantial price spikes in the history graph. Someone’s dropping a huge amount of in-game gold into gems. There seems to be some sort of mechanic that erases or normalizes that spike quickly (a manual rollback, possibly). I suspect some gold farming business is trying to test how much they can game the system to favor their own business.

I imagine that some of the recent down time is probably the Anet response, looking for a long-term solution.

WvW lock low pop Worlds from entering "Boarderlands"

in WvW

Posted by: Sparkie.3465

Sparkie.3465

They just need to start displaying WvW populations. My drop-down list should say:

Eternal (100% full)
Green border (85% full)
Red border (15% full)
Blue border (33% full)

From this I can gauge that Eternal probably has a queue, green has no queue and enough players to fight with and red and blue are probably a waste of time.

Lack of information makes the population issues worse.

Don’t you understand that, if they provide that information, it will perpetuate red and blue being a waste of time? The only way to make them not a waste of time is to get more players to join. Someone has to be the first into the pool. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I’d rather that they make special trigger-able “comeback” events or siege gear. Something that would let you retake your nearest strategic points easily if you controlled nothing on the map. Maybe a boss that your team could summon who would throw the other team into disarray, maybe a time-based buff to your siege damage for all the ticks that you don’t own some percentage of the map. Maybe the ability to hire some temporary NPC mercenaries or allies.

What's the gender breakdown for your characters?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Most of my characters are female. My Mesmer Norn is a male only because the female starting outfit was indecent on the two different races I looked at (norn and human). I don’t want to walk around in the buff, and I don’t want to have to spend my first several levels trying to find gear that covers her properly.

Overall I’ve been pretty happy that the females I did role can easily opt out of the outfits with high levels of exposure. I don’t mind if other characters want to prance around with little to wear, but I don’t want to do that.

What would you do if you were missing 200+ PvE items and 5 levels of XP?

There were many bugs with PVE too. Several of these bugs result in loss of items. There was a butter incident you might’ve heard about that’s got the tailors in a tizzy right now. There was a karma weapon incident and a pepper popper incident that didn’t directly remove items for PVE players, but significantly altered the in game economy (and several karma-based items) in a way that injures many PVE players.

When you play a game at release, there will be bugs. That will happen in any large game you play – be it a single-player game like Skyrim or a huge MMO like GW2. Sometimes those bugs will negatively impact your play experience. I assure you that the devs are not happy you lost your PVP chests, but it happens and you should try to roll with it. In your case, at least you are on equal footing with all your PVP brethren, who suffered the same problem. The PVE bugs are much less equitable in impact and usually hurt the most innocent players the worst.

As to why it’s not theft: loss of in-game items, characters, or whatever in an MMO can never be considered theft. The MMOs have all set it up such that they officially are the owners of every bit of in-game “property.” You should be grateful that this is the case, because it protects you from having to declare your in-game income for tax purposes. It protects you from a number of legal issues. The downside is, there’s no going to the police when your stuff doesn’t get delivered, but the upsides generally outweigh the downsides quite a bit.

They already got your guild mate’s money. It doesn’t matter to them if your guild mates go off and play the release of the panda expansion. In fact, they might be glad to have the load decrease for a little bit while they hammer out more release bugs.

However, this is what I’d tell your guild mates:

“Go play WoW, and have fun at it. When the severs are unplayable on the panda release day, come play GW2 for a bit. When you are sitting in queues to get on your WoW server, come play GW2 for a bit. When your DPS character is waiting for an hour or more to do the panda leveling dungeons, play some GW2 while you wait.

When the WoW servers are stable and the instances are working, go enjoy WoW. We’ll still be here in GW2 if your raid wipes give you a headache, if your class turns out to not be the PVP flavor of the month, or if you don’t like the look of your tier armor and you’d like the customizable armor of GW2. Your account will still be active since it’s free to play. So say hello to the pandas for me and don’t be a stranger – we’ll keep the porch light on for you over here."

Why can't we craft aquabreather and back items?

in Crafting

Posted by: Sparkie.3465

Sparkie.3465

I don’t think any players will have the answer to this.

For the back item, I think they wanted to make it an item that you could only obtain via personal story. I think it’s good to have a unique reward from the story line, to encourage you to actually follow the story line and reward you for doing so.

I doubt that they’ll make the back item craftable by that logic. They will probably add a greater variety of back items in future content patches or perhaps expansions. As they are, I can see a very real potential that they’ll just get patched out as an unnecessary and uninteresting design decision.

The aquabreathers just feel like they didn’t get around to addressing the item properly at all. Perhaps they simply forgot about it or didn’t have time to flesh the idea out. It seems like a waste to make these craftable, since it has such a minor influence on game play. They’d have to add in quite a lot of them to follow the current crafting pattern, or they’d have to deviate heavily from their current crafting pattern. Underwater weapons are already in very low demand, so underwater armor is just not going to be a big ticket item any time soon. Do you really want to have to think about amassing components for a level 80 high end crafted aquabreather? Neither do I. I expect they’ll get more attention if they release a heavily-water influenced content patch or expansion. Even then, I expect they’ll likely be a karma item.

For the love of all that is good in the land, plz shut up vendors!

I’m a huge fan of the idle conversations that I’ve seen. The random call-outs haven’t bothered me at all.

I think a handful of very heavily used NPCs have this problem with greets. There are probably a few idle conversations that are a bit too close to the heavily used NPCs, judging from the other commentators (none have bothered me personally).

Would it be possible to include an option that tones down or mutes NPC voices if you stand still for a couple minutes? I’d rather keep all the vibrant NPC chatter, but I can understand it grating on some players.

The biggest problem with healing breeze is the cone targeting mechanic. Cone targeting is completely ridiculous for any type of healing ability. Change it so that it hits the nearest X allies, just like our healing virtue, and it would be much more popular (or at least more viable). Cone healing is not viable in games that discourage motion – it certainly won’t be viable in a game like GW2 that encourages motion.

I feel that our underwater combat is very strong. We have a great selection of underwater utility skills. We have some neat abilities. We have underwater weapon swapping.

I’m not 80 yet, so I don’t know how it scales. However, in numerous underwater events, underwater hearts, and even underwater PVP, I feel like a juggernaut. I’m not very good at PVP, but if I find someone underwater I can stomp them very consistently. It’s nearly impossible for them to kill me. Above water, I’m a PVP-noob and I don’t tend to do well on 1v1.

In PVE, I can handle a fairly large pack of mobs underwater. In events, I do quite well and don’t get drowned as often as most other players around me. If I do get drowned, that amazing skill on the #2 button usually rallies me right away.

That harpoon ability that makes a column of light might as well not exist, though. I swear that thing causes more evade-glitching in NPCs than any other ability I’ve seen.

Mystic clovers less RNG

ANET should probably know that RNG is the #1 destroyer of mmorpgs.

RNG is the driver of MMOs. It’s a form of gambling. Go read up on psychology.

Also, you aren’t unlucky. You just think you are, and you seek out examples of bad luck while ignoring your own good luck to reinforce a self-image problem.

Your luck is exactly the same as everyone else, especially in an MMO. The clover generation rate is determined by a set number in a database. The RNG is no kinder or crueler to you than the rest of us. Don’t believe me? Record your clover creation rate and compare it to everyone else.

The universe is not out to get you.
