Differences in WvW and PvP builds?

in Warrior

Posted by: Spartacus.3192

Spartacus.3192

i’ll let others provide a more comprehensive answer but quick one is for Conquest (pvp) its all about capping and holding points which means people are forced to fight on or very near the points. This makes AOE weapons like Longbow (its burst skill fire field plus might stacking from #3 LB skill) very very effective. For WvW its more a mobility thing, using terrain and line of sight. There is no requirement to fight in a particular area and so you can “roam” around and move as much as you like to engage and disengage from combat. This makes GS/Hammer a much better setup for WvW.

I play a lot of unranked in which usually the team members just run around doing their own thing. I used to play HamBow a lot but got bored with the Longbow. So i decided to use this one instead. Sw/Sw Hammer. Im having a lot more fun with it and still win my fair share of 1v1. I agree that the AOE damage is amazing with LB but unless im running with a few guildies i prefer this melee build.

100% fury uptime, nice bleeds/torment while still hitting hard with the hammer. Its a very selfish build so definitely not for real team/ranked.

For levelling as stated above GS with Sw/Focus is best. When i levelled my guard i tried all the weapons but what i liked most was GS/Hammer. Hammer is awesome in PVE Events and i just love the skills on that weapon.

Staff/Hammer for WvW is meta but even there i tend to run mostly GS/Hammer or GS Scepter/Focus for my style of play.

It would be better to run the meta nberserker build with GS+Sword/Horn. This would give everything you need plus superior mobility for tagging events.

I don’t get the need for useless defensive stats or condition damage. Different for the sake of being different is usually bad.

I think the whole point wasnt to be diff for difference sake. Silverwaste mobs have a lot more toughness than other PVE mobs which require you to either kite a lot with ranged weapons and/or have condi damage potential which ignores armor. The build i posted takes that into account and from what i found works better than zerker melee build.

Im all for people looking at meta builds but at the same time it will be a sad day when everyone is running the same builds. I play this game for fun as i am sure most people do. As such i prefer to play builds that i enjoy but are still effective.

Having said that for PVE pretty much anything works, some work better than others but since we are not talking dungeon speed runs its not a big deal what people run.

Ive been using a Sw/Sw Hammer build in the past week since i got a little bored with Hambow. I dont actually miss the LB and ive won my fair share of 1v1 fights in sPvP. Sure if some is running away from me i have to make sure i have Savage Leap and Impale available to close the gap but otherwise i like the added condi/melee pressure of Sw/Sw.

Warrior Silverwaste build

Spartacus.3192

I used it again this weekend and it has pretty good power, however, for fun i decided to alter it a touch. Mainly for those players who need more condi clear and CC

So i basically swapped the GS for hammer, dropped Forceful Greatsword for Cleansing Ire.

Its a big a change since no more might stacking which was what made it so powerful although kinda glassy (in terms of weakness against condis)

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fJAQNAS8cjMdUFaXIWewJigkgC5onBXDgCQXVkaGA-T1CEABJcBAy+gAExRAoFVKAR3AqKBZRdleU+JxDAAAzfxs/AZAWGDA-w

I tried this build out on Sunday and it has a ton more CC with the hammer. The lack of might stacking from Forceful Greatsword is offset with using a Sigil of Strength and Battle in the Hammer. Crit chance is 74% with fury so the Strength Sigil procs often. Cleansing Ire also kept the condis off me.

Thinking about dropping guard as my main pvp

I’m sad to say that i mained a guard since i started playing but also felt really weak in PvP. I prefered WvW and even then not the meta Staff/Hammer. I hate the fact that we have to use traveler runes if we want to roam and not feel like snails.

In the end it bugged me enough to switch to Warrior and now i dont have any of those complaints. I freely admit im a casual pvp’er (dont consider myself an expert in any way) yet i win way more 1v1 as a war than i ever did as a guard.

I ran this again after a few weeks break and i did fine in the breach and vinewrath events last night. If you feel nervous about big events like that i would swap the GS for LB and drop forceful greatsword skill for cleansing ire for just that part of the fight. However i did not need to do that.

Sw/Sw and LB is a great variation of this build (minus the might stacking of course) , i just like using GS so thats why i built it that way .

NOTE: sigil of energy gives you and extra dodge when you swap to it which comes in handy when dodging boss attacks. (and i didnt die at all in the VW event last night and i was always fighting right in the thick of it. Oh my gear is exactly as above. Exotics only)

Warrior Silverwaste Build

DISCLAIMER: I designed this independantly and did not copy anyone, HOWEVER, i 100% expect someone else to say they have seen this before simply because there are lots of players in this game and surely someone else may have come up with something similar long before i did. All i can say is that i did not knowingly copy anyone. Fair enough?

So this is my Warrior build for Silverwastes. GS and S/S, hybrid build.

Please note the way I make my builds is to change accessories and weapons only. I use the same armor set whether im doing WvW, Dungeons or Open World. The set I use is very versatile. (plus i’m a lazy cheapskate!) The weapons and accessories are all rampager stats (Precison main stat. power/condition damage secondary) I dont have any Sinister gear otherwise i would try that.

Armor is 4/6 Zerk with Soldier chest and legs. Hoelbrak runes. (you can use all zerk if you want).

The concept of the build is the synergy of Sw/Sw with GS and the Traits “Leg specialist”, “Opportunist” and “Forceful Greatsword”

Basically the 3rd hit on the Sword Auto Attack and “Savage Leap” (#2 sword skill) and “Bladetrail” (#4 GS skill) cripples the enemy. “Leg Specialist” means I get to immobilize on cripple. This links with “opportunist” which gives me fury on immobilize. The end effect is I have OVER 100% uptime on fury (its 100% since fury stacks by duration and my fury boon time is longer than the CD of the skills). My normal base crit chance is 56% so as soon as I enter combat (with “savage leap”) I am up to 76% crit chance.

Now for the fun part. Savage leap will immobilize for 1 second so I will immediately switch to GS and use 100 blades. Since my crit chance is now 76% and I have immobilized the enemy for a bit I can land a chunk of the 100b. “Forceful Greatsword” gives me might on crit. Yup! I stack 5-8 stacks of might immediately. And if im cleaving multiple mobs I can get more than that. I don’t see evidence of an Internal CD on might stacking. please correct me if i’m wrong.

Silverwaste mobs have some high toughness so the condis from bleed and the multi stacks of might are very useful. I can melt mobs much faster than if I use just a power build.

There is also a lot of condis from mobs and since I don’t have cleansing ire the only way I can remove condis is with the sigil of cleansing on my GS and to use condi reduction food. However I kill mobs pretty quick with this build. If condis are a problem for you, you can swap the sigil of energy in the sword with a sigil of purity for an extra condi removal per swap.

Build is below. As stated above you can use whatever armor you want but I recommend Hoelbrak runes for the increased might duration.

Didn’t read all the posts but sounds like this is how it went down at an ARENANET strategy meeting.

Person 1: How do we get everyone to buy the new expansion?
Person 2: lets make a superclass that will appear (or actually be) so OP that everyone will want to roll one.
Person 1: Sounds great. Once everyone has bought it and the rest of the community starts to QQ hard we can release a “balance patch” to nerf Revanant to the ground.
Person 2: HAHAHA ….love it!

this is sooo sad….by that logic….

why do thieves always use stealth to escape combat when they are losing.. They should only be able to use stealth if “Out of combat” as a way to sneak upto targets, not as a way to sneak away from a fight.

Im not saying it should be done that way but thats where i see the equivalent logic.

might stack question

in Warrior

Posted by: Spartacus.3192

Spartacus.3192

i was playing around with a power/condi build last night in Silverwastes for fun using GS, S/S. Traits: Leg Specialist (Immobilize when you cripple a foe), Opportunist (Gain fury when you immobilise a foe), Forceful Greatsword (Gain might on crit).

Sword 2 skill (savage leap) immoblizes and is on a short cd so have perma fury. GS 4 (bladetrail) also immoblises and so gain fury.

If you open with savage leap and swap to GS, 100blades will rack up quite a lot of might. With Strength or Hoelbrak runes you get increased might duration. I was racking up 10-15 stacks in my opening burst but i also had 84% crit chance (with fury running).

Sigil of battle would give extra might too if you have that

WvW guardian Solo build ?

Spartacus.3192

Hammer / GS is may fav setup when i go WvW but its not optimal for solo work. You would do better with GS Sword/Focus using Meditations. if you can team with at least 1 or 2 other players then Hammer/GS is totally fine since the Hammer’s protection symbol will really shine and you can spec Altruistic Healing and never die while still doing excellent damage.

0/1/6/6/1 build for Hammer/GS with Altruistic Healing/Empowering might works well for me when im in a havoc/small group or zerg.

Melandru vs Hoelbrak for WvW roaming

in Warrior

Spartacus.3192

It is a good website, but don’t believe everything you read there. Everyone can post builds there. You need to to think outside the box, not copy paste everything 1:1.

Thats actually how i play. I hate just copying builds , however, i like to understand what it is about a build that makes it good so i can decide whether i want to keep that aspect or not. Hence my question as to if anyone knew why melandru runes were used instead of Hoelbrak. On my guard ive played every meta build and then adjusted them or tweaked them with regards to traits, gears, sigils , runes to get to builds that i like to play in PVE, WvW etc.

Im levelling my war and want to do the same. Start off from the "meta’ or popular sets and tweak from there. Just from levelling i have a fair idea of what i want to do but i dont want to reinvent the wheel so its always good to start from a strong base build.

Melandru vs Hoelbrak for WvW roaming

in Warrior

Posted by: Spartacus.3192

Spartacus.3192

There is NO meta for GS/Hammer builds… It’s Shinryuku’s build and melandru runes are HIS prefered rune set. I think hoelbrak are infinitely better for roaming because of the extra power and might.

It’s all about your preference, more damage? Hoelbrak. Slight increase in survivability? Melandru.

oh i got it from metabattle.com

http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Warrior_-_Hammer/GS_Roamer

It stated it was part of the metagame so figured that means meta.
I kinda feel that Holebrak should be better too or at least more versatile.

Melandru vs Hoelbrak for WvW roaming

in Warrior

Posted by: Spartacus.3192

Spartacus.3192

Hi all, can anyone tell me why the Meta GS/Hammer Roaming build uses Melandru runes instead of Hoelbrak?

I see that the Meta GS, Axe/Shield use Hoelbrak. On paper im trying to see why you would want the extra tougness and stun reduction rather than power and might duration for a roaming build.

My war is almost at level 80 and im planning to buy the exotic armor set and runes for WvW. The benefit of getting Hoelbrak is that i can also use it in PVE until i get the gold for a separate set of armor.

Apologies for the ignorance if the answer is obvious.

That moment when condi guard...

in Guardian

Posted by: Spartacus.3192

Spartacus.3192

Why are ppl still trying to make Condi Guard a thing? Wanna play Condi? Go Engi, Necro, Ranger, whatever, all these are better than Guardian for condi play and any team, ANY team in their right mind will pick this to any Condi Guard out there. Condi Guard to have damage comparable to Zerk Medi will lose all team utility. Zerk Medi already has few, but will still have some because of the boon destribution and group condi clear. Condi Guard loses all that in orther to stay up with the damage of the standart Zerk Medi. Well then I will use the Burst Medi, and I want to see you do similiar damage after that ….

Zerk Medi isn’t already part of the meta, Condi Guard will never be there

The only thing you got right is the fact condi isn’t meta.
My 20606 build alone does exceptionally more aoe damage in zergs than meta zerks, with the exception of Absolute Resolution (how much team utility do zerk meds bring??)
Zerk meds do “very little” against a team with Two celes ele’s, a turret engi, thief and >insert sustain class here<.

You have nothing to justify your claims other than “Not meta, doesn’t work.”

ON ZERGS?
Wtf are you talking about? CONDI FOW WVW ZERGING!? LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL Best joke of 2014, and Condi Guard for zergs

I have admit ive been testing hybrid condi in zergs and im finding it quite hard work. the 2/0/6/0/6 requires that you be right inside the zerg or at least next to it for the Permeating Wrath and i basically die too fast. due to lack of toughness/sustain. 4/0/6/0/4 using GS Scepter/Torch works better against zergs because the scepter will proc burning every 3rd hit and if you use zealous blade then GS heals when close. I feel that Hybrid/Condi builds are better suited for roaming solo/small groups not zergs.

Maybe i just need more practice.

Zealous Blade healing

in Guardian

Posted by: Spartacus.3192

Spartacus.3192

also cleave count

And whirling wrath can heal as much as 25*14=350hp if all hits connect?

It’s more than that – WW has the potential of ( ( 7 * 5 ) + 7 ) * ( 25 * ( 0.02 + HP ) ) = 1050 healing without HP. ( That’s 7 * strikes with AoE on 5 targets + 7 single strike projectiles )

If you do all guardian skills on rotation, with AA in between and assume they all hit maximum targets, then it’s 14650 healing per minute ( 244/sec avg ).

with 1000 HP then it’s 26370 (440/sec)

Realistically you aren’t going to see anything like those numbers outside of PVE, especially as you can’t control when and how you do damage most of the time – but you can think of Zealous Blade as another added passive increase to the guardian health pool, like Virtue of Resolve.

It’s main problem is you don’t feel like you are getting much benefit from it

If you are interested in playing with the numbers, it’s listed in my Healing spready linked in my sig.

Thanks thats interesting to know. I tested zealous blade on my hybrid build in Silverwastes and i definitely notice some decent healing when fighting at least 3 mobs at a time.

So i saw this in Harbinger’s guardian thread….

Supreme Justice- This trait will increase your damage output, but at a cost. Generally you are constantly going to be activating Justice to get might stacks and blind/vulnerability. However this trait is really for the passive. So it forces you not to use your active as much.

So does that mean if i activate Virtue of Justice then my passive burning will no longer proc at all until VoJ coolsdown?

Spartacus.3192

It’s a wvw build and I use my Meditations offensively. I have Meditation Mastery and Focused Mind to be more offensive. I don’t need monk’s focus. 2000 heal every 16 and 36 seconds won’t save my life. Altruistic Healing and Empowering Might with virtue spam if needed give enough sustain. I have symbols too and Absolute Resolution also helps. And I can blast and leap water fields like a boss.

I’m not saying it’s a “meta” build but it works just fine for me. It’s not a frontliner and not a DPS medi guard. It’s a midline choice.

I see…yes i prefer to run my own builds also. Metas are great but not necessarily the most fun. Plus running slightly different builds can surprise some enemies.

Between our blinds and blocks, we have little to no issues against other raw damage classes. It comes down to timing and being outplayed in that aspect.

If you have more sustain, then you will have less damage per sec. I’m curious how much you take away from power, vita, or condi to optimize your hybrid build.

Im still fine tuning the build….i was buying some carrion gear last night from TP and some new armor runes to experiment with. One problem (for me anyway) is that i LOVE traveler runes. I cant live without them for WvW. When going solo or pug zergs swiftness efficency from Warriors or other Guards isnt very good or available. So that prevents me from really getting into Flame Legion or Balthazar runes.

I run a similar setup since Holl first video. I change the traits every now and then. Currently: 00644 with AHEM and stability or condiclean on virtue. Still got 2 meditations on my bar namely JI and Smite plus I have the so-needed SYG.

It’s a hell of fun build to play. Bit squishy for a true frontliner (-4000 HP means a lot…) but the ability to jump out from the line then hit a pesky ranger’s or thief’s idiot face with a big hammer a few times with 10+ might and fury and than do some CC and clean up or get back to the line is priceless

If you are using AHEM why have 2 medis on utility bar?

What ive noticed (for WvW anyway) is that you have to be very careful what stats you give up in order to take condition damage. Hybrid means power/condi so you need power and condition damage. Now Vitality is also important to a certain degree so that you can handle the condition damage and burst done to you. So it would seem the only stats you can readily give up are ferocity and precision and to a somewhat lesser degree Toughness too.

Going full Carrrion i think causes you to lose way too much toughness which means you “take” much more enemy damage while not really boosting overall DPS that much. A mix of Soldiers/Carrion gear gives a combination of Power/Vitality/Condition Damage/Toughness. Optimizing that combo should give good direct damage combined with steady burn ticks, while still giving a measure of protection via Armor.

Some of the builds ive seen have less than 2500 Armor which i feel doesnt do well in a larger group setting. Gearing for 2700+ armor effectively reduces incoming direct damage by over 8% while reducing burn ticks by approx 50hp/sec.

Any thoughts on this?

i dont fully agree

ah works on 5 allies so there is not much difference between big group to small group
the main difference is shouts support your team while meditation support you
but both can work well at the same environment

Well AH has a certain range and if your team mates (in a small 5 person team) stray out of range you dont get the full benefit of AH. Also if 1 or 2 die in a small scale fight you immediately lose effectiveness whereas Medi maintains constant effectiveness. Thats why i said 10+ because you can always count on 5 allies close to you even if they are not from your actual party.

MF heals also do not have an on-hit requirement and are burst heals. You’re taking a measurement based on the best-case scenario, which almost never happens because you’re not going to be hitting every attack every second, let alone on 3 targets. Beyond this, there’s also the fact that ZB heals are dependent on you being in melee range and you must be attacking to benefit from it, which leaves you vulnerable because you aren’t healing when taking defensive action (i.e. dodging).

Ok i agree with the dodging part. I am using best case scenario, however, ive been testing it out in SilverWastes yesterday and im ALWAYS up against multiple mobs and if im using a GS of course im going to be in melee range otherwise i would be on my scepter. And in WvW taking camps its usually at least 2 mobs at a time.

I understand the burst vs tick heal, however its not insignificant. Having said all that it does need a bit of a buff.

AH dps is much better in group situations than medi. AH dps can also bring support (since you’ll be most likely running shouts), and your survivability will be greater. Medi will give you higher dps output and burst, however they don’t really fair as well in group environments.

yup what Harbinger said. Medi for solo or very small teams (less than 5). AH for bigger groups. 10+. AH/Shouts scales very very well as groups get bigger.

Is the healing really that pitiful? I mean traited Smite Condition heals for approx 125 hp/sec (2000hp with a 16sec cd).

If cleaving 3 mobs/enemies you get 75hp per swing and you swing twice per second so 150 hp per second. Thats better than Smite Condition healing and more than Passive Virtue of Resolve. If you are clearing camps in WvW or fighting in a Raid/Zerg battle you can easily cleave 3 enemies.

Nice. Ive been using a 0/1/6/6/1 GS/hammer build in WvW for a while now (i hardly do any arena PvP) . Its so much fun. And if you decide to join a group for some zerg action, just change to Altruistic Healing and Empowering might (still 0/1/6/6/1) and you will hardly ever die. Wearing Knights gear you get pretty high crit so you have awesome self sustain just from Empowering Might Crits. Hammer Mighty Blow and my Shouts give enough boons to support my team without having to resort to boring Staff/Hammer setup.

Sorry i know that was slightly off topic.

What's the best Hybrid/Burn build for WvW?

Hello all your hybrid guardians. As the question states whats the best Hybrid/Burn build for WvW? One that can transition easily from taking camps (solo or small groups) and fighting large Zerg battles. I dont mind if i have to change around a few accessories or weapons or even traits if needed. Id rather keep the same armor/rune set though.

Thanks

It’s an alright trait, most people use it for the damage multiplier and not the healing aspect. I’d like to see the healing coefficient buffed a bit, this would help immensely when it came to dps builds.

Im trying to fine tune my WvW hybrid medi/burn build and one thing im noticing is my self sustain and armor is less than on my pure medi (Zerg V Zerg) build so i need to find more ways to self heal…Since burst builds dont have a chance when fighting large scale wars.

Now i know AH frontline shout build is meta for WvW but i tend to run a medi build and simply swap some accessories if i find myself in a solo or very small group. Tankier for ZvZ and bursty for solo. Plus AH frontline is boring as sheeeeeeet.

I agree that the healing should be improved. Doubled at least.
