The guardian doesn’t fit any of their Class Balance Philosophies.
Instead, the Guardian puts a line and wall on the floor and tags people in a wide arc with the staff for epic WXP. That’s pretty much it.
Their ridiculously low HPs means they have to buy PVT gear simply to try to survive. I don’t feel powerful with boons, heavy armour does nothing, toughness does nothing.
Retaliation is one of the only ways to deal with a thief and there’s nothing we can do against a mesmer. Nice lines and walls tho – no doubt they’ll be nerfed soon.

Wow, kind of wish I didn’t waste points so far, for a 2% reduction in siege damage.
An increase range on Ballistas, and a 25% increase in damage will be a Zerg buster. Ten of these, and you won’t get near a keep/tower without first building Catapults, and/or Trebuchets.
I’d hate to walk into a supply camp with well placed Ballista, with the operators having this.
That’s the case BEFORE anybody has it.
Hey Guys,
Happy Easter! Please could you make lots of videos of you steamrolling the 70 man Abadon’s Mouth zerg? It would make me very happy.
Lots of love from Gunnar’s Hold.
I liked the idea someone had about getting a ticket for completing the Living Story story arc.
I thought about this also. It seems only sensible. Otherwise the reward for completing the arc isn’t related to the arc, despite all of the players knowing that a related reward could be available if Arenanet wanted it to be.
It doesn’t matter, these are just pretty skins in a video game. Get used to never being able to afford them and play. I recommend preparing to play the next big game to come along, who knows, it might have more accessible items!
I get the impression that people don’t like this random chance stuff.
Happy Easter! Greatsaw skin price triples!
A number (it could be one) of people have bought up the Greatsaw Chainsword skins. There were 20-30 yesterday and now there are 3. The price is now ~300g when it was ~150g not long ago.
I encourage anybody who wants this skin to hold off as long as possible, and especially NOT to buy it over the Easter holidays.
Honestly how can anet think this is desirable.
Sound was somewhat fixed in the last patch. I think that it being reduced to inaudibility in the one before that was holding down the value, otherwise it would have spiked earlier.
The sound has nothing to do with it.
This is an example of why I keep any interaction with the RNG to a minimum.
You guys rock!…

DAoC was that good.
I hope all the Xaoc Reapers guys who got recruited on GH realise that they ARE still welcome here and that the community is here for all players, even if you don’t want to be part of it: www.gunnars-hold.eu
As for the remnants of the old Xaoc, I hope they find a server where they can fill a gap in the night time coverage. I feel sorry for them because they play hard and have a big presence, but they can’t find a home because of the timezone problems. I can understand them getting frustrated, but to cry and whine as they leave seems rather childish, to me.
The tool tip for the second tier of the Cannon Mastery and Ballista Mastery abilities shows the wrong percent increase. The tool tip for both of these should say that it increases damage by 25%
Matt: Could you quickly clarify a question that was raised about the abilities: Are the effects for each level cumulative or additive? For example, does tier 2 of Guard Killer upgrade your damage to 2% TOTAL, or does it ADD 2% damage for that tier, for a total of 3% (1%+2%)?
I made the assumption in my previous post that it was NOT additive. That was a mistake on my part and I concur that this needs clarification. If it WERE additive, then the numbers would appear to be far more sensible (at first glance).
I just wanted to reiterate how much I appreciate that you had to rebuild huge swathes of code! It has made playing a LOT more fun and interesting over the last two nights (Eu) – much more so than I thought it would. Terrific job everybody!
Classy job, T8.
So…
Ballista Mastery
- +25% for 15 points
Siege bunker
- +5% for 70 points
Seems a bit … skewed, but okaaaaay.

These Free Transfers are the April Fool’s joke, look: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/free-transfers-to-medium-populations-worlds/
Not funny, imho.
You have your chance to move now, T8 guys. Take the opportunity while it is open to you.
It seems that this the window of opportunity for T8 WvW players to move away to reasonable servers. I feel sorry for you guys, but what needs must be.
I wish all those on low pop servers a joyful Easter and a pleasant voyage to the server of their choosing.

Thanks for adding the screenshot!
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like everyone is having this problem, so it may be something caused by graphics settings or hardware. If you are having this problem, please provide a screenshot of your graphics settings and a DxDiag report so that we can try and find out what the common cause might be.
Fixed your double-negative for you. Anyway…
I definitely am getting this issue, but I can live with it. Lots of people I’ve talked to have it, too, and some even say they like it because it looks cool. It is definitely not a one-off or rare thing.
Please thread-merge!

The game performs remarkably well even in very populated three-way battles.
Great job, WvW team!
I’m interested in this. It looks like one of the biggest class changes. I have a level 30 engineer in storage who might get to see the light of day again.
The server as a whole I wouldn’t say has a mature atmosphere at the moment though, thanks to [HT] guild (not counted among the community because they refuse to take part in it, in hindsight quite thankfully).
We’ll Borg those guys yet, have no fear.
We’ll see what it brings. We know they are server hoppers, and that they will stick around for a few weeks and then leave again. [..] Either way we can’t really stop them.
WARNING! THE FOLLOWING POST IS PURELY PERSONAL OPINION.
They seem nice enough people to play with, here is some general information. Xaoc;
- try to get the randoms on a map to group up with them,
- scout out potential targets very well,
- generally run as a zerg,
- use lots of siege to attack towers/keeps,
- spend a lot of money upgrading,
- get frustrated easily when the enemy get the upper hand,
- get very upset about losing keeps they’ve upgraded, even though they…
- never defend,
- expect you to retain control of everything they’ve capped when they go offline until they come back online.
- are split up over multiple servers with the vast majority gone to a T1 server and the remaining people wanting to push [insert server_name] up the tiers.
Good luck, FSP.
And i hope their will be again changes so running in one big blob isnt the best tactic anymore.
I agree with this person.
I’ll repeat what I said in the other thread:
I can say with some experience that the server you are thinking of transferring to doesn’t want any fair-weather Marys. Either transfer for good or don’t transfer at all. They want you to be passionate about their server, not it’s ladder position.
For the next week, all the medium population servers will be free to transfer to. Might be worth giving one of them a look!
Free transfers again? Why?

A skilled Guardian player doesn’t get bursted unless it’s a unfortunately coincidence.
The rest of your post contradicts this final statement. Let me qualify that with the statement that guardians’ supposedly high “effective hit points” come from:
- active defence.
- good play on the part of the guardian.
The guardian has to generate the “effective hit points”. They cannot have high hit points if they get bursted by surprise or shafted by cooldowns.
As a person who specced his guardian specifically to have as many boons as possible (Virtues), I think Boon Hate will kill my build. I’m angered by this move by the devs and I believe that it is fuelled by ignorance. I was already struggling against other players anyway!
I can only pray to the devgods that when Boon Hate is implemented, Guardians get some compensation (like … oh … a reasonable HP pool, or make it so that toughness/armour does something against conditions, maybe?).
(edited by Svarty.8019)
I’m developing “Developer Hate”.
Mace is by far the tankiest weapon and it’s great against mobs, but feels very awkward in WvW where the enemies move around a lot more and the swings are quite slow. In the offhand the focus is great for personal protection and shield for helping allies or punting enemy players off cliffs.
While almost all guardian weapons are situational (e.g. 1h sword is great against single opponents), the greatsword is the master-of-all-trades.
- swap to gs
- drop sanctuary
- spam gs #5
This is hilarious after portal-bombing a zerg. Boing!
A great post by treyalsup.4627 which deserves developer attention and response.
See… I took that more as them all thinking “they just need to l2p against these classes then… why would we balance for such low skill level gameplay?”
To which I would reply that they should balance for such low skill level gameplay because the thieves themselves can be more effective than most other classes with less skill.
EDIT: In fact, the devs say as much right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0togRMEc_o#t=41m06s
(edited by Svarty.8019)
I saw this and lolled. Unbelievably the devs actually try to justify the thief: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCUvIrH2BlU#t=1h28s
That stunned silence at 1h 2m 19s made me laugh my kitten off.
I think Guardians need some certainty.
We’re given contradictory messages, “Guardians are supposed to feel the pressure when boons run out” and “Guardians are supposed to get into a fight and keep going”. Which one is it?
- “Keep going” or
- Not keep going (i.e. “feel the pressure”)?
We have one condition and yet we are told that it can dish out some heavy damage (see video at 42:40). We are told that we have options (see same video) but we have to wear Vitality gear to even have a reasonable health pool (reducing our options by 33%).
I think we need some clarification.
(edited by Svarty.8019)
A bit of a thread necro, but this is a nice article about acquiring the shield.
Reading through the “Full Condition Gear” thread, I hear a lot of guardians complain that Burning isn’t a viable way to spec your character.
According to the devs, 5 days ago in this video (at 42:37) Guardians;
*have a lot of specs available to them and
*can deal heavy burning damage
I’m not 100% convinced, please convince me.
(Please don’t address the statement, “Guardians are expected to get into a fight and keep going” here).
Please see image:
Just pass the costs on to the consumer.
If you can’t/don’t want to pay, you can’t have the item. Isn’t capitalism/consumerism lovely?
for start i want you to post your 150k wvwvw kills, cause i know a lot of warriors /guardians with that ammount.
NO, you really don’t.
Say they put the equivalent of flashing blades at grandmaster in acro or trickery (maybe gain aegis and retaliation on crit with melee and C&D grants protection instead of stealth) I have a feeling there would be more of an outcry than right now because thieves would be able to keep up constant pressure while mitigating damage against themselves not to mention they could still begin the fight with a huge burst. The gw1 assassin could dictate the fight from start to finish with heavy cc, high damage, and a rapid flurry of attacks. The gw2 thief lost some utility and staying power for stealth. I don’t mind. They play differently. As they said though in their live stream when they were talking about nerfing eles, stealth can be hard for new players to deal with, but it appears to me that they are essentially saying its a learn to play issue. We’ll see what happens after they fix culling, but I have a feeling that we’ll continue to see small buffs to thieves.
(P.S. I use that builder quite frequently already)
A laughably optimistic perspective, for sure. I wonder what you might consider a buff – perhaps a little buff to defense in exchange for some stealth nerfs, as mentioned above? I expect and hope we’ll see the thief changed into another type of combatant – something I believe that Arenanet desire also, hence the creation of this thread. Current thief gameplay is a big issue.
Sure, do it. I have nothing to lose.
Lupi can’t be easy on any class, even on a thief, so gz. I didn’t watch the video, is it a one-shot kill or just heartseeker spam?
The people that exploited the game early on will always be the wealthiest players in GW2, and no matter what they do, legitimate players won’t ever amass money comparing to those fortunes.
This game reflects the real world far too accurately for my tastes.
Is there any audio available?

In WvW, the (current) downed system encourages zerg-like behaviour.
