Hodgins seems to be getting stuck near the end of the instance before the last boss. It is particularly annoying because the burrows part of the dungeon takes a decent group to get through.
I’m not in the back waiting on cool downs to toss out another few seconds of boons,
I often find myself having to withdraw from a tanking role if an encounter drags on too long (most encounters – though I had an amazing 3-thief team yesterday that took mobs down so fast!). I’m in the back waiting on my self-heal cooldown because the boss wiped 80% of my HPs in one hit and there’s no other way to recover them.
My dungeon experience is something like:
Fire Save Yourselves, tank a bit, aegis a hit, block a bit, blind a bit Virtue of Justice (if the boss is one of the few that doesn’t reduce blind to being useless), try to keep Protection up with mace3, shield4, Hold the Line or Virtue of Courage, try a knockback with shield bubble (occasionally it works), use virtues and skills to give more aegis, try to dodge if I see obviously telegraphed uber attack, suddenly lose 80% of my hit points in one hit, dodge away, wait for self-heal, hit it and jump back in.
On some bosses it’s all good, on others it’s a bloody nightmare and I have to give up and kite.
seems like ANET will only be happy when we get so nerfed that we wont be able to hold our own and not even be viable as dps while every other class in game is!
My guardian gave up on DPS a long time ago. My toon seems to be just about harassment and throwing Protection on people.

Split skills are a crazy idea. How are you supposed to “learn your class” when it’s different in every situation?
If that is how you feel about the current explorable dungeons then you should either:
A) Get a better group with players who know their profession and can play in a team.
B) Go learn your profession and learn team play yourself.
C) Go play WoW.
A) Knowing your profession isn’t the answer. In my opinion learning the encounter’s mechanics is as, if not more, important.
B) See A.
C) This is a silly comment.
I’ve now made a tanky guardian and can take a hit or two from all the bosses I’ve encountered so far, but literally only one or two hits. It seems rather harsh. Were more encounters based on comprehensible mechanics such as Gaheron or Kohler, then I would be happy, but it seems that many are simply based on the concept of kite-until-you-die-and-run-back-before-it-resets.
We know that Arenanet know (a known known, for all you Rumsfeld fans) there are problems, and can now only pray.
TL;DR: Some encounters are done right, but too many are one-shotting players.

It’s not an exploit to skip Kholer. He’s a bonus boss that unlocks a central waypoint, drops loot, and also gives a chest.
People skip him because:
A) He’s hard if you don’t know what you are doing, and don’t communicate enough.
2) Our changes to our token rewards moved the tokens out of his unlocked chest, so people don’t feel they have to fight him to maximize gains
III) Our dropped loot is abysmal, so you’re not finding anything of value.Solutions:
A) He’s supposed to be hard, it’s explorable mode. We should aspire all our bosses across all difficulties to be of similar difficulty.
2 and III) We are currently re-working and changing our loot for dungeons. I had previously hoped that it would be in for the next patch, but it requires a lot of tuning and testing, so it might take another patch.Use AC as a template. People love AC because every champion mob gives 5 silver and the final boss gives 15 silver along side the end of the dungeon reward. Remove the silver bonuses from these mobs and have every boss drop 5 silver instead.
Then the “bonus” bonuses need to have a significant reward. As it stands each bonus boss is really more of a penalty boss. They get in the way and slow your run down. If they gave karma, money, and tokens people would be more encouraged to do them.

Eveningstar.6940Sorta TL;DR Version: High health pools are basically ablative defense. They let you survive big, frontloaded damage, but you’re almost never going to be healed to 100% in an aggressive fight. The lower your health pool, the more mileage you get out of each individual HP healed. The lower your health pool, the more vulnerable you are to condition damage. The lower your health pool, the more vulnerable you are to spike damage. The higher your proportional mitigation (armor, toughness) and the more options you have for total avoidance (dodge roll, invul, block, miss), the less vulnerable you are to predictable damage. Most spike damage in PVE is predictable. Therefore Guardians actually don’t need that much health to perform well.

Otherwise, I think you’re right. While we have very low hit points, we are at a disadvantage in PvP/WvW and by splitting our powers (just “Save Yourselves!” so far, but now there’s a precedent) between PvE and WvW/PvP, Arenanet appear to intend to have Guardians in PvE only.

It’s not live yet. I went in WvW and neither Renewed Focus nor Save Yourselves! were any different than before.
I run a Virtues/Shouts build, and already have a suit of Toughness/Vitality/Power exotic armour.
With this in mind, I would like advice on buying Flame Legion gear. As you might imagine, I would like something with a bit more… oomph. I have 1080 tokens so far so I can get nearly the entire suit, but I wonder if either of the non-vitality suits are viable for us, given our abysmal base health pool?
The three available suits are:
- Power/Precision/Critical Damage
- Power/Vitality/Condition Damage
- Power/Precision/Condition Damage
Perhaps a mix-and-match approach would be beneficial? Your advice would be appreciated.

You don’t need to remove or completely change Retaliation. First of all give it a very clear graphical indication, so that your opponents know it’s up. This will do two things. First of all, it would make everyone who keeps attacking someone with Retaliation up a completely idiot who deserves to be mocked and it would make Retaliation more reactive. Instead of trying to keep it up, you’d activate it when you expect heavy damage is incoming.
Then you should also make Retaliation do the damage that is incoming, instead of scaling with Power. This makes it a lot more defensive and less attractive to damage builds.
Loathe as I am to agree with you. Ever. I like these suggestions. I think, though, that they might risk making a retaliation build a little more powerful than “intended”… heck, I have no idea … what the hell is the intent?! Anybody? Arenanet? No? Anybody else? Pff. Nothing. No clues at all.
You guys fail at guardian if you think renewed focus is not awesome.
It is awesome, but if you need the invulnerability, you’re going to die anyway. If 3s of invulnerability saves you, I’ll eat my hat.

Why is it not nerfed in PvE? If they carry on down this road we will have some classes for PvE and different classes for WvW/PvP. Is that what “Intended” means?
I can’t help but wonder why it wasn’t nerfed in PvE as well.
What do Arenanet intend? What is this great mysterious “Indended” that we all must kowtow to, lest we receive another nerf? Is it sinful to even think about asking such questions? Will we all be punished in the afterlife?
Please can we have abilities that don’t change depending on which side of a line we stand on?
I don’t know the exact intent behind every skill, nor do I claim to. It’s why I put “intent” between quotation marks, because it wasn’t the perfect word.
That being said, I suspect I’m right about the intent of “Save Yourselves!”. All Guardian Shouts are defensive in nature, so it’s not unassailable that this is also the case for “Save Yourselves!”. If people are using a skill that was designed (which I know, because more than any Shout, “Save Yourselves!” is group focused) around group support is used more often as an offensive tool, something went wrong.
This is a preposterous statement for several reasons. Firstly, you claim to know the intent behind the Shouts despite not claiming to know the intent behind every skill. Frankly, the post smacks of hypocrisy before you even get to the point.
Secondly, you state that Shouts are defensive in nature. I disagree. It’s wholly subjective and basically, …your opinion. Ignoring the effects of the skills for a moment, Hold(ing) the Line or Stand(ing) Your Ground are hardly defensive things. They are offensive, allowing someone to remain the combat (hurting enemies) for longer.
Thirdly, if Arenanet intend something, they should explicitly state it. Frankly, putting the trait Power of the Virtuous in the game seems to be encouraging people to spec for shouts in an offensive way. They even have Might, Fury and Retaliation on boons – hardly defensive at all.
Random nerfs. Great. My spec was built entirely on the boons do more damage buff in virtues. Now I can’t play gg, arenanet. You won.

Game DesignerWe are also looking at ways to better support players that are getting shut down on maps. Again this is something very new, so we are not able to say anything on how this will work. However, the goal is to make players able to leave the spawn areas with ease, as well as provide assistance on capturing objectives when you are being completely shut down on a map.
I wonder whether you should be looking at making it more difficult to keep hold of the whole map as opposed to making it easier for the losing side to leave the spawn (honestly, that’s not an issue: people can just go via one of the not well flagposted side exits instead).

I can say this [..] we recognize failures not just in random occasions, but in total systems and dungeons in general. The great thing about an MMO/Live game, is that we can change it for the better. We have plans to change things based on feedback, and we are finalizing those plans right now. World transfers need to end. It is most disturbing that Arenanet are letting this go.
all most ppl care about (and should atm) is the end reward (60 tokens), the faster u get there, the better.

Since they changed the encounters so they don’t offer individual rewards, it’s now rewarding to skip all of the content you possibly can.
My solution to this would be to offer SMALL reward for the first few encounters and larger reward as you progress, so it’s not efficient to just farm the first encounter over and over, but you might not want to skip everything.
My Guardian can often be seen in this pose.

My “support” is done via (primarily) Shouts and Virtues with my spec. It involves just slapping boons on people and removing conditions, but it’s all about timing and closeness and most of the time it fails. There’s nothing reliable about support in this game, especially when you consider that the guy doing the support could be tanking at the time you need supporting. Thus, support is unlikely to come when needed, just get used to dying and running back.
This is a BIG issue!

The reward isn’t the same. Arah tokens can’t be acquired from another dungeon, thus not the same.
Here is my solution: The “Truce” mechanic. Once one world has a score greater than the other two teams added together, the other two teams become unable to target one another. They become the same team. Points scored from then on are shared 50/50 between those two teams.
When their score becomes higher than the formerly dominant team, they split back to normal and all keeps/towers go to the default owner except those in enemy lands which go to whoever contributed most. Done.
Burst damage will destroy you before you can activate this supposedly wonderful active defence. That’s why HPs are so important.

Do your EU servers have people set to translate for NA players?
I know some of the NA server’s have 24hr translators for the oceanic’s/others who play from EU.
The Scandinavians tend to chat in English, the British chat in English… the French, Spanish and Germans have their own servers.
Honestly there are always going to be unfair server match ups…
But not the the extent that we currently have – with shameless guilds transferring to already winning servers, and Arenanet being complicit in exacerbating the problem.

I would prefer WvW turned into a big campaign, but I’m not sure how this could be achieved.
Lock them now. No warnings so people can transfer to wherever they like.

While i understand that an universal token is a bad idea, why not make every set be bought with 60% from its main dg and the other 40% distributed among the other dgs?
EX: Now, you need 210 Arah tokens for Arah shoulders.
It could be something like 126 Arah tokens plus 12 tokens from each of the other 7 dgs.

You’re right, this is a great compromise.
Remove repair costs and we’re good to go. With ridiculously expensive bags and cultural gear, it’s not like we have nothing to spend moneys on, is it?
I think GH has great potential.
