IMHO, random equates with “scam” and “rip-off”. Proponents will no doubt argue that it’s fun to open a chest and see what might pop out. And, if it’s fun for you, go for it. If you’re looking for the cheapest way to obtain a particular item, though, buy it on the TP.

I’ve opened maybe a couple hundred chests during my time playing GW2 and never once seen anything even close to approaching the value of a single key on the gem shop come out. Thankfully, I’ve never spent a gem on a key — only used in-game keys.

My best advice would be to never ever buy a key using gems.

Not sure how you got over 100 keys without buying them. I have yet to see 1 drop from the world. Just the personal story ones are all I’ve ever gotten without buying them.

Some of you guys are funny. You won’t buy one gamble because you were unlucky, but you’re more than willing to buy into the same gamble with a different name.

Keep it constructive or don’t post at all. It’s known that hardly anybody got anything of any value from Halloween but the Karka event came out and there was a flood of stuff because the chests actually dropped stuff they said they were going to.

There is a difference between Black Lion chests and the event ones. We’ll see how they handle it this time around. Who knows? Maybe they’ve learned from their Halloween mistakes on this one.

Fireworksstuff or something would be cool. Just be patient. Their announcement doesn’t necessarily mean that there aren’t some little surprises, I think. Just let’s wait whats coming.

This. We don’t know everything that is going to be in the game yet and who knows maybe they will do some little things like fireworks or something to celebrate. But there are a lot of people who won’t probably even log on Christmas Day and who will be partying for New Years. I imagine they will do something, but just be patient.

Also gotta remember – not everybody celebrates Christmas or has the same New Year. Food for thought.

I hope it’s harder than the Clocktower so that I can have as much, if not more, fun as I did with that. The hours I spent on the Clocktower are the most memorable for me in years; it was such a blast. I also loved how people complained about the Norn/Charr scaling, yet I succeeded repeatedly and reliably despite it.

It’s so satisfying being able to do the hardest jumping puzzles in the game while others fail and complain about the difficulty on the forums. Call me sadistic, but I think it’s a good thing that only the top X% of the population can succeed at certain content!

It’s people like you who ruin holiday events. They’re not so that elitist jerks like you can get their virtual rocks off while others fail. The events are in game so people can enjoy the festivities and have some fun for a few weeks.

Get over yourself. Having completed the Halloween jumping puzzle on all 12 of my characters, I do not feel any better than someone who didn’t.

And @Whoever said that they hope there’s PvP? I would absolutely hate if there was PvP involved in this jumping puzzle.

Wintersday Concerns About the 'Feeling'/Atmosphere

While I understand the potential for disappointment as a fan of the original game, I also believe Guild Wars has room for both old and new traditions. We seized the opportunity to appeal to the classic Guild Wars fan with Halloween, so it feels right to me that Wintersday will cover some new ground.

It also makes a lot of sense given the fact that not only have the human gods been missing for some time, humanity itself is rather beaten back to a relatively smaller corner of Tyria. So I hope you’ll reserve your judgement until you see what the new version of Wintersday is all about.

Thanks for the response, I made this post after i saw the video and was sad that there wasn’t any grentch or snowmen, I know that theyre connected to the gods but the human ancestor in me hoped they’d be here. It does make sense that theres a change, and I am willing to give it a chance. I am just concerned for it, as going on wintersday in gw has been a tradition for me since i was 12. It’s part of my holidays. I’ll trust you guys, just please dont take advantage of it, and keep the wintersday, wintersday.

I agree. It’s been part of my Holiday celebrations as well, and like I already said, the GW1 Wintersday is my all time favorite event in any game and I cannot commend ArenaNet enough for their work on it. I even got a Polar Bear last year and got myself, my brother and my girlfriend 50/50 and we almost have GWAMM too!

I do hope they keep the spirit of the event the same and keep it fun and memorable and I am hopeful that they will do that. We’ll see when the event goes live tomorrow!

Anthony,

First of all thank you so much for answering so many questions in this thread. It really does show a lot about you good people at ArenaNet who do really care for us and care for making these events enjoyable.

That being said, my personal all time favorite event in any MMO – no, any GAME – was the Wintersday in GW1. I’m actually playing it as we speak waiting for the GW2 Wintersday to release.

From the preview, it looks like you guys did a good job in capturing some of the soul that went into making the GW1 Wintersday so nostalgic, memorable, and fun. I won’t know until I play it, but assuming there are snowy cities (which there are), Wintersday Music similar to how GW1 has it going, Snowball fights (Thank you for bringing these back!), I feel like the game will match up to the GW1 counterpart.

I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us in GW2’s Wintersday, and while the GW1 Wintersday will always hold a special place in my heart and I’ll always remember the atmosphere of it, I am hoping that GW2 takes the torch and runs with it for years to come.

We’ll see if they go that route again. Though it’d be unfortunate for those who banked up a bunch of keys in prep for the event. I know tons did that because to get the Halloween item skins you had to buy the keys to get lucky from the regular chests.

We’ll see though. I will buy a few regardless and hopefully more people will see more festive item skins this time around!

I am hoping that Anet increased some of the stuff this time around since I’ve heard a lot of good things about the crafting compared to Halloween. But having spent over 50$ on Halloween chests (then throwing away all the boosters I got to make the Mad King chests and getting nothing Halloween related) I am a bit reluctant to do so again.

After the Halloween fiasco, I am going to find it pretty hard to put money into any of those. Will any of you be buying them this time around? Why or why not?

So much nostalgia of the towns going all snowy and lit up, the candy cane items, presents, everything about it was absolutely amazing.

I do hope the chests are not as horribly RNG corrupt as the Halloween ones though for sure.

Myself and many others are curious as to whether or not we will see another hat / costume collector similar to GW1 so that we can clear some storage space of all these costumes?

I for one want to buy every costume in the game from the cash shop similar to what I did in GW1. But I will not be able to buy them this time around because of general lack of space. I’d have nowhere to put them if I did buy them.

I’m hoping to get an official response on whether or not these are in the works or said to return at all? I can safely say that if they were brought back a lot more people would be inclined to buy the costumes (like myself) because they wouldn’t have to worry about their storage filling up with these costumes and hats they buy.

You wouldn’t even need a separate voice actor. It was suggested in another post to be able to choose different voice styles. So if you choose charismatic voice, or evil voice or whatever, your character will talk like that. It would have different phrases and different inflections. They had it in Neverwinter Nights and other games. It was cool. Helped your characters have different personalities.

While I would love this, imagine how much time and money it’d take for Anet to record the same vocal queues and phrases x amount of times (x is the number of tones and voice styles). It’d be awesome, but not practical or viable unfortunately.

And what simpler than put someone in a list and waiting for a group for the dungeon they want. And when there are a group looking for someone, pick them and go. Even from another server with random classes.

IF you are some of those elitists (the same who never put an Mesmer in the group in GW1 PVE but will love the same mesmer on PVP) sorry for you. IT will be more difficult to get what you want. But for me, in a game that every class can have a big role in a party and playerskill is the only real problem… And even if you get the perfect party setup, you can be stuck with kitten players who put their MF gear and delay the party with constant downed and dies…

Another good point, thanks for adding. As I said I mostly do in-house runs with my guild but I agree there is a simple (correct) way of doing it and I think that if Anet did do something in game they would do it right and keep it simple like GW1 and just have lists of names looking for more, for groups, and organize it neatly in a window in game to allow people to communicate and organize groups from the finder.

Dungeon finders destroy community and make running a dungeon just a chore. There’s no human factor in it, no real interaction. It devolves into a dying and unproductive community that prefers to just stand around idle waiting for queue. You want a great example? Look at WoW.

Exactly. However there are ways to do a LFG system well. If they do implement one in game I’d rather it just be how it was in GW1 and just be an interface showing people that are looking for group, looking for more, and so on and so forth.

But I do agree 100000000x that there should be no random factor and just a hot-join button where you click once, the game organizes a party and throws you guys into a dungeon to run around chaotically. Not only is it unorganized and frustrating, it takes any sense of community out of running dungeons.

So don’t switch. I prefer doing them on my lowbies because the silver is trivial to begin with and you still get the Karma jug and the coin (which is the main reason for running them IMO).

Not to mention the EXP is more beneficial to an alt rather than a main character unless you need to mass up skill points for those big purchases if you haven’t done so already.

Whole guild > Guild leader.

Also, just saying, there wouldn’t even be a “whole guild” if that “guild leader” didn’t make the guild first. He or she created it, he or she can do with it what they wish. Nowhere in the TOS agreement for GW2 does it say Guild Leaders need to be fair or run their guild a certain way.

Imagine if the people working in cubicles could just call a vote against their CEO? Yea, we’re tired of you so your outta here. Lol

Another point I made. Careful now, you’re venturing into dangerous territory. Take your logic elsewhere!

GUILDS: Voting System Needed

The problem with threads like this is there’s no logic and everyone puts their “oh s—-!” hats on and wonders what it’d be like if their guild had a similar situation. Look at the situation from all points of view and make a rational decision.

If you start using logic you’ll realize that a system like this one being suggested couldn’t work in a game like Guild Wars 2 and it is wrong to even suggest it. If you want to decide how a guild is run, make one yourself.

It’s funny how they call you a troll for speaking logically against them. I will give a personal example of exactly the kind of situation something like a vote system would cause.

During my LOTRO days I was an officer in the best guild on our server. Our guild leader was an active MP in the area currently deployed in Iraq, so our leaders right hand was in charge for months.

Now before joining this guild had been solely PvP but had interests in the limited endgame available. So by chance one day the leaders of my previous guild decided to merge our guild into theirs to assist with those goals. We wanted PvP and they needed our endgame PvE experience.

Myself and my old guild leader spent months up to the early morning hours helping get a DKP system in place, figuring out strategies and needed gear, and of course the many trial and error runs. We were successful though, as a guild. We progressed quickly through the dungeons with myself as raid leader most nights and minus the who gets what loot drama it was a lot of fun.

Well now our leader comes back stateside and wants to come along the runs, who wouldn’t? So we now have a full active guild again with him home and he’s coming along learning all the new stuff. Low and behold though once he gets his gear he wants to take over leading the raids against the final two bosses and says we can continue leading what is essentially trash mob runs.

Needless to say we were pissed, and as officers we made it known we were pissed. Many times we tried to discuss a fair option or come to a compromise but he wouldn’t have any of it because he was the leader and it was his guild. So at this point I waited for him to screw up, I wanted a reason to make him look bad after stealing what my friends and I had worked so hard to achieve for “his” guild.

I caught him spying, essentially what server transfers created for WvW here, and I blew his cover for the other side letting them know who he was on that toon. As you can imagine I was demoted quickly and I stopped playing the game for over a year.

If there had been a voting system to usurp power I would have used it out of spite more then anything and I believe that to be the greatest cause for concern with this idea. I’m not the same person I was then, I’ve become much more laid back after seeing how pissed off I could get over someone half way across the country, who by the way ended up destroying his own guild anyway. Now I run my own guild here with happy members that just want to enjoy themselves and that’s all I ask of them, it’s just a game.

There should never be a system like this in a game, it’s a social aspect that everyone has the ability to remove themselves from and that’s the only real way to handle it.

Thank you for your post and I’m glad I saw that right after editing my post before I left this thread forever. I do appreciate that you actually read my posts and saw that they are logical and objective and not personal or biased in any way.

I’m also glad that you pointed out one of the negatives of a system like this and the s—-storm that would ensue if there was something like this in place. Maybe since you haven’t been deemed a troll yet people might actually listen to you.

Thanks again for your post and I’m sorry to hear that that happened in the guild. I know what it’s like to see hard work get tossed away in an instant. Not a fun experience.

I totally agree with Siphaed, If a guild leader leaves a guild for some reason for a elongated period of time and if the members of the guild are in agreement that leadership must be changed there needs to be some fail safe system to get back leadership of the guild

Except, once again, it’s a free to play game. And once again, real life happens. I know that teenagers in high school don’t understand that there is more to life than an MMO, but take again my Hurricane Sandy example. There are still people homeless from that storm and you’re saying that because they lost their home and their life for the time being that they are unfit to run a guild?

If a guild leader has an extended absence it’s up to the members to decide what to do – either wait or move on. It is not up to you or Anet to decide who takes over the guild that this individual created.

.

is completely false. You may not like to think so, but you are wrong here. If someone created a guild they can do whatever they wanted to it. It’s theirs. It was your choice to join a guild, nobody forced you and the harsh reality is that if a tool was in charge and they did something similar to what’s mentioned in the OP there is nothing you can do about it except find a new guild or stay in that one (which wouldn’t make sense).

I’d like to point out that a guild is NOT the guild leader’s to do with as he so fits. He may be lead because we’d made a somewhat unanimous decision for him to lead for one reason or another; but NOT own all rights and every inch of the guild WE THE MEMBERS built.

To give situational information: The guild members polled together 100 gold for a Commander Seal for said abandoning-leader. Each of us that got the collector’s edition, the completed our personal stories (on multiple characters), captured keeps, and so on dedicated OUR Influence to this guild. The guild symbol for our banner was vote-picked, the website designed by a different officer, the recruitment video by another, and yet another hosts our VOIP client. The current leader is only leader because the original leader had some real life issues and was courteous enough to inform us and voluntarily stand down.

But, I do see where some people would be upset if the voting system could be enacted whenever and for whatever reason to give possibility of mutiny. I do then like the idea that someone else had that this kind of voting system would only be enable if the current guild leader is MIA/hasn’t logged in for a month. This would ensure fairness that he could be given ample opportunity to contact the guild (from outside the game means or inside), as well as give fairness to the members to make a new leader if they so choose.

There should be no systems in place to automatically take a guild away from the creator. Members are the backbone of any semi-decent guild or better, but that doesn’t make the guild theirs.

A guild leader is not in his or her place because he or she was voted in. That person decided to make a guild that you decided to join. Plain and simple. Rationalize it any way you’d like but at the end of the day there are no rules within the game to force guild leaders to behave a certain way. And that’s what you guys are trying to suggest here – which is wrong.

Some guild leaders are not fit to run a guild, some are kittens, some will abandon, but the majority will not. For that reason, coupled with the tons of other valid reasons I mentioned above (not to mention the fact that Anet openly suggested to play this game along with other games and that it’s a sub-fee less game) are why you will not see this feature implemented in the game.

Because it doesn’t make sense, it’s wrong, and it’s a waste of man hours to implement because a few bad apples. If your guild leader abandons you you have 2 choices. Wait it out, or find another guild / make your own. We don’t need ArenaNet regulating how guild leaders run what they created.

Don’t straw man me. Don’t read between the lines, don’t assume anything based off of my post because I bet you didn’t read any of mine before posting. But understand this system is wrong and will never be seen in this game. Not everyone is meant for guild leading and some can’t take it or don’t want to do it anymore because of whatever reason, but that doesn’t mean you get to shove a system like this down the throats of everybody else.

I’ll put a tl;dr for you since I can almost guarentee you didn’t read any of my previous posts.

td;dr – It’s not up to Anet to regulate how guild leaders run the guilds that they created. If you have a problem with a guild, find a new one – it’s simple. Anet has no place regulating how guilds are handled.
