I have tried every combination of fighting a Ranger in downed state, going as far as testing it with a friend in an empty server. There is no combination for a Necromancer to beat a Ranger in a downed contest UNLESS

A) The Ranger was heavily damaged in down state

B) The Ranger made several mistakes

C) The Necromancer is traited with 50% more downed damage and high crit damage/precision.

Put the remaining 10 in curses or spite. Extra damage or precision.

If you’re going for a Burster or damage over time build, Close to Death is almost mandatory.

Necromancer has a high learning curve just for the fact that you have to resist the urge to commit suicide/pull your ethernet cable the moment you get stun locked for 4+ seconds eating 20+ stacks of assorted conditions with your only breaker on a 60 second cooldown.

Precisely, it’s risky allowing a Phantasm to stay on the battlefield. Always kill them when they appear. They only take 1-3 hits, so it shouldn’t be difficult. If you do not kill them, they will slowly eat you alive.

Their Water skills/cleansing are OP, along with Cantrips. Fix those and you can buff whatever you want within reason. That’s all I have been saying.

By the way Stealth, I would invent a drinking game about how many times you use “QQ” in a post, but I’d probably be dead of Alcohol poisoning by now if I did.

Necromancer is currently the most balanced class in the game, despite having some serious glitches and problems. All of it’s builds are viable. Jack of all trades, master of none. Elementalist only has 2 OP builds, no other viable ones. How is that balanced?

Are you implying that a condition Necromancer can win a war of attrition with an Elementalist? I have a build that is LITERALLY nothing but chills, poison, and fear bursting. Didn’t work. At all.

Literally the only way a Necro can kill a competent Ele is with an extremely helpful team, the Ele makes way too many mistakes, or the Necro is using a strong burst build. That’s it.

As for Maxi, you are probably a worse Ele than the Necros you met, because every Necromancer I’ve talked to that use conditions have a hard as sin time against Elementalists.

As a very good Necromancer, no. We do not win that downed state matchup. We infact lose that rather hard. Warrior? Yes, I suppose I’ll give you that one, but it’s more of a “YOU DIDN’T WIN#!” without wasting a trait for the res.

You also have to remember that Fear doesn’t work on downed players, so Necromancer’s 2 skill is utterly useless in that aspect unless you pretend to be smart and fear the Pet off the heal, which doesn’t. work.

The poison is less effective than you think.

then why is it whenever im faced with being downed at the same time as a necro there is a life draining skill or something completely over rides any healing.. and i die.. im not sure on the exact skill but im certain, it’s just one that’s not commonly known to do that to our heal in downstate..

There is no life draining skill that overrides your healing. Poison removes 33% of your heal’s effectiveness but that doesn’t matter since the Ranger pet heal is even stronger than that. Unless the Necro built entirely around downed state, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

just a correction, elementalists are virtually immune to small amount of conditions, they have quite a lot of removers due to cantrips with water traits, but they all have LOOOONG cooldown, if you can spam enough conditions (and necro, engi or even a trap ranger can), ele cant remove them all and if one of them is poison, they die quite quickly then

Irrelevant. The Necromancer struggles to acquire 14 stacks of bleed and possibly some poison/chill. The Necromancer is made to focus on quality, not quantity, which apparently doesn’t work at all against a semi-competent Elementalist. It is literally impossible for me to beat an Ele 1v1 on any of my condition builds. They outlast my conditions and end up killing me with burn or raw DPS. The strongest burst a Necromancer can achieve through conditions is with corrupt boon. However the Elementalist doesn’t rely on boons like a Guardian would, so corrupting them is pointless as they can easily replace them. (Also, if you think anything at or below 25 seconds is long for condition removal, think again.)

My point stood for all pet based builds.

If a Minionmancer is tough, then he does no damage, he gets all his damage/toughness from his Minions. Kill them in the appropriate order and he will fall. Similar rules for Mesmer apply.

No.. Just no..
If you try to kill the phantasms you will have a bad time.
There is simply too low a CD on the summoning skills.
I’ve watched Thief v Mesmer duels where the thief tried different strategies, and killing the phantasms was probably the worst.

A 16 second cooldown is not a low CD when you can kill them all with AoEs, or 2 hits from a ranged weapon. I play Phantasmal Mesmer myself, and when a good player disables my Phantasms and I have to wait for that cooldown to get my damage up again… I’m in trouble.

If they nerf Elementalist’s ability to cleanse their entire party of conditions, and so often, I’ll be perfectly fine with them doing 65,000 damage with firegrab because I know how to avoid it.

What bugs me is their healing ability. What also bugs me is their cleansing capability. What bugs me even further is their boon sharing capability. And finally what bugs the absolute CRAP out of me, is that all of this is AoE. Fighting a Thief with a good Elementalist helping is like fighting a bunker that crits for 9k. That’s immune to my main source of damage.

And yes, Elementalist is actually very forgiving. You screw up on a Thief? You’re dead. Screw up on Mesmer? You’re dead. Screw up on Necromancer? You’re dead. Scre… roll a Warrior? You’re dead. Screw up on Elementalist? Heal it all back, run away, and try again.

Ranger Pet Revive

Ok, so I’m fighting this Ranger in sPvP at the Temple. I get him downed while we are underwater. His pet tries to revive him so I stun him, which doesn’t stop the revive. So I kill the pet. Then I get downed underwater. I’m punching and kicking this guy and all of a sudden his dead pet begins reviving him again (after the skill cooldown is up I would assume). He get’s res’d and I die.

Not only can I not stomp this dude, but his pet can revive him even when both are downed/dead?

What in the world…

altho i do admit underwater the heal can be strong.. the mechanic it self is sound.. it’s hard to have enough time in a normal ground fight to use it.. underwater you stopped the heal with the interrupt and when the timer was up on lick wounds he just reused the skill..

a little note on pets and lick wounds.. if you kill my pet before i use it.. when i use my downed skill lick wounds it will revive my pet instantly.. as so not to deny me my class mechanic if smart players decide pick on my pet just before i die..

That’s a poor justification for having an “Instant win any tie” skill.

Stealth. I play D/D Elementalist. I play Staff Elementalist more so. I understand the class very well. I still believe it needs some specific nerfing. All your arguments ever seem to be are referring to other players as QQers and calling things a l2p problem. It’s incredibly rude, to many people that don’t even deserve it.

Dumb glitch, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve downed a Ranger, only to be downed shortly after myself, and lose completely utterly when he barely has 5% HP left while downed because his pet mitigation is so strong. Hopefully they’ll fix it. at the moment, Ranger wins all downed fights.

Matchups exists in all class based games. This is a class based games. Learn the matchups. Builds counter other builds.

In this game, Elementalist is virtually immune to conditions, and has such incredibly strong support I wonder why there are even Guardians anymore. A Guardian and a Elementalist together are virtually invincible from any amount of conditions. They need a nerf to the Valkyrie builds, a nerf to the Cantrips. That’s all I care about. They can buff whatever else they want as long as it doesn’t reach the levels of nonsense they currently have.

You underestimate my skill, Stealth. You think anyone that loses to an Elementalist is less skillful than the Elementalist? I can’t believe you’re serious. Have you ever once played high level at any game in your life? Do you know what Matchup charts are?

Mortal Kombat 9: Arguably one of the best players in the world mained Shang Tsung and lost to a Cyrax simply because the Cyrax had 100% damage combos with no meter required. Shang Tsung only has access to 50% combos 3 meter without Soul Stealing.

Bottom line: the player lost a 7-3 matchup in favor of the Cyrax. Those odds are incredibly hard to win with. Just because of his character.

Skill is always involved, but Elementalist has an inherent edge over it’s opposing classes.

I never underestimate anyone skill, please do not misunderstood me. But find out that most of QQer either with Thief or Eles, how may do you think they actually play the class? What else can you understand the class by not playing it yourself? Watching other player will not do you any good. But only a few of them actually listen and understand while other just keep QQing. And please we are talking about Guild war 2, an MmORPG PC game here,please do not use Mortal Kombat here as a gauge today you are skilfully. I don’t care if you are even the world champion in Mortal Kombat, all I care is how skill you are in Gw only and only. thank you

I’ve been asking for a nerf to Cantrip builds for ages. They shouldn’t be able to cleanse conditions as much as they can (AoE Even), causing them to be practically immune to conditions.

The only thing I believe needs addressing, are the cleanses and ridiculous healing capability. It is virtually impossible to kill an skilled D/D Elementalist using conditions. No class should ever have the amount of strong AoE support options Elementalist has.

Stealth, I find it funny how every single complaint you’ve ever seen on Elementalist or Thief you consider QQ. I honestly don’t even care about your opinion anymore since you literally never even bother to understand the reason behind the complainers. I know high ranking tournament players that absolutely despise Elementalists with every fiber of their being for how strong they are. Infact, I know several that actually re-rolled to Ele for viability.

I explained 6 times that I would support removing last refuge.

I only added in Shadow Refuge so that if Thieves ever get that fix, they could be completely fixed as a package, but people are in denial about their classes and would fight to the death not to have anything nerfed. Even if it meant buffing other aspects.

Just like Elementalists do about D/D. Ever try to stack bleed on a D/D Ele? I thought not.

The only class that is currently broken in an OP state is Mesmers. All others can be killed equally depending on player skill.

Agreed, with one exception.

A good dagger/pistol thief that exploits constant restealthing via heartseeker in their blind field is very difficult to beat.

I was wondering which builds people are having more success with in TPvP and SPvP. I checked out the stickies, and tried the 5x fear build, but it didn’t seem as potent, or maybe I wasn’t playing it right. What are most of you using in PvP?

I posted 3 of my 34 PvP builds on here: “Vampire Lord”, “Potentate”, and “Minion Lord”

Check them out if you like, all 3 are viable in tPvP, but if I had to value them based on usefulness, I’d have to say Potentate is the best build out of the three.

I have many more builds, but I won’t be posting them much on the forums, so if you want further help or advice for PvP Necro, message me ingame and add me. I’ll be glad to help.

I’ll agree that it needs to be removed, or heavily modified. To be honest, it’s one of the easiest ways for me to kill a Thief, as at 25% health they’ll just suddenly be revealed and my own trait ends up activating “Cast Spinal Shivers on a foe when they are below 25% health” which is essentially an insta-kill for a Thief when he can’t stealth.

It looks like you’re going for a very dysfunctional hybrid. You can’t have it all, if we could have it all, we’d be D/D Elementalists. I’m not an expert in WvW, but I do know that if you want to solo roam in it, you need speed, and quick damage, none of which this build inherently provides.

I play all classes. Some classes, such as Warrior, Necro, Ranger and Mesmer have incredibly hard times against an D/D Elementalist. They are infact overpowered when a proper D/D build, with a good player, can do more than any other class in the game. Beastmasters are almost as OP despite relying on single target damage, as they are bunkers that do incredible damage, up to 5-8k crits off their pets.

The definition of balance, is that all classes are equal in effectiveness (even if their effectiveness is specialized) to all other classes. This is not the case with Elementalist. Not even remotely. Just because you can beat them, does not mean they are balanced. There is a specific reason why I see 2+ Elementalists every time I play a tournament.

Just because I kill Thieves often doesn’t mean they’re underpowered, I simply believe that a few of their skills/traits are stronger than they should be, and some of their skills/traits are completely utterly useless.

So you want to keep the most overpowered build in the game, D/D Elementalist (Best bunker, support, and strong bursting), whilst buffing the Ele’s underpowered weaponsets.

Impressive. Would you like Thieves to have a pistol that fires nuclear weapons as well?

I bet you also want to keep Trap Ranger and Regenning Beastmaster too while buffing their Longbow to shoot flaming Chuck Norrises.

While Warrior sits at the bottom of a barrel getting 3 hit killed by Bunker Elementalists.

Essentially if I could regenerate and passively cleanse while in Deathshroud (and my Deathshroud regenerated itself passively while not in use) I might be able to compete with such a capability, despite still being targetable.

Oh please. Deathshroud is a second lifebar for necros that automatically regenerates without having to go through an intense string of tricks left and right to maintain it. Our stealth lasts for a very short time. We don’t get an additional lifebar. We don’t have nearly as much health as you do. Our direct defense is awful. We have very limited ways to get into stealth, and many of them involve attacks that can either be countered or evaded. Thief movement in stealth is predictable. Don’t whine to me when you’re the most/second most survivable profession in the game.

That post tells me you know nothing of Necromancer.

Try keeping a constant 50% Lifeforce up in a tournament. I would trade Deathshroud in a heartbeat(seeker) for Stealth access. Deathshroud is awful, purely, simply. It acts as a second lifebar about as much as an Snickers bar counts as an 3 course meal.

Here’s how to use Deathshroud properly:

  • 1: Spend 5 minutes building it up at the start because you start with 0%.
  • 2: See a Thief
  • 3: Use your Deathshroud to eat 1 Thief backstab
  • 4: Fight Thief with no Deathshroud remaining for the rest of the fight unless you successfully manage to hit him with 5 of the slowest moving projectiles in the game (Just for a tiny 2 second Deathshroud) or waste a slot skill for a 7 second protection that grants lifeforce when you take damage. On a 90 second cooldown.
  • 5: Win or lose against the Thief
  • 6: Spend 5 more minutes building it up again

We can’t just walk around Deathshrouded soaking up damage, the only effective way to use it is to flash in and out of it for the Fear, or perhaps 1 hit. Or the AoE if you’re outnumbered. That’s it. Period.

I’m not going to argue with you about viability of Necro, but you obviously don’t know anything beyond Thief, so… yeah.

So essentially you want the current meta to continue. Heartseeker x20. Generic backstab meta builds that barely succeed in killing any good player. You want Thieves to be only brought into high level tournies specifically for Shadow Refuge, as usual?

Alright, fine. Let’s keep D/D Elementalist too, since they Eles are quite fine with their single overly-viable build it seems.

Try to play close point mesmer in a high rated match. Hardest role, imo.

Try playing close point. Far point. Mid point. Inbetween middle-far. Close to Close but between Mid. Near an enemy. Or any other role as a Warrior in a high rated match.

Neat. I run a bursting Necro (or 34 of my other self made builds), that blinds, regenerates, and crits upwards of 4k DPS.

The only reason why any such Thief build is viable, is specifically because of their godlike regeneration/cleansing properties while stealthed (A poorly thought out mechanic). Although I am intrigued, I am also not surprised.

Phantasmal Mesmers have to wait on a 16+ second cooldown for each of their Phantasms. They are also very fragile.

Treat a Phantasmal Mesmer like a Minionmancer, kill the hard hitting Minions, THEN focus on the Mesmer. Granted the Phantasmal Duelist is a little bit on the strong side for being so hard to dodge, but there are ways around it. Most good players know the ways around it.
