GS+Staff is great for traversing and double symbol aoeing. GS+mace/focus is also extremely good when fighting a lot of mobs.

Have fun.

It looks as though many frequenters have dwindled off for the time being. Another patch has come by with nothing being done. It’s also pretty clear that even though we’re vocal, we’re still a minority; This can be seen if you keep up with QAs and interviews because never is there any mention of fotm at all.

I’m one of those that have run fotm many more times than I want to think of and have only received 2 skins. On a side note, I decided to test my luck and bought 200g worth of BL Keys on patch day and didn’t receive a skin.

As you can see, luck is obviously -not- on my side. However, I have most definitely put in the work and it’s demoralizing to have nothing to show for it.

I just get kitten at things like this because people are too dense to figure kitten out and instead are quick to complain. If one likes to spend 80% of their time staring at health bars, then they shouldn’t be playing this game.

Actually, you’re missing the point. Does your team depend on you for that?

That’s the discussion here.

Furthermore, this game has intentionally been designed very simply. When you boil it down, your ‘too dense to figure it out’ is really just selecting 7 traits, reading the weapon skills, and then itemizing your gear to match. Calling someone too dense to do that is presumptuous and insulting.

And beside that, blatantly wrong, and a sidetrack from the conversation.

Go away, or partake of the discussion without insulting me and others.

-edit
Btw, I do still appreciate your recommendation to try tpvp, that was helpful. And I will look into it some more to see if it’s viable for me. I’ve only dabbled in the PvP of this particular game so far.

You’re absolutely right and I went off the rails of the actual topic into a bit of a rant; My apologies for that.

I think a better way for me to go about adding to the conversation in a short way is this: Necessities are present and certain classes bring these things. It’s not “role” based but it’s what we’re given. The roles are very blurred and a lot of people have a hard time adapting. I use adapting because you either want to work with it or you don’t, in your case it looks as if you really wnat to because you like the game, but having a hard time feeling important.

I’ve played support in games, and competitively, for about a decade (stopped the last few years). It feels awesome, and I excel at that. Do I miss that feeling? Yes. Can you get it in GW2? A little. I believe the biggest reason I’m open minded is because I played 8v8 in GW1 and was introduced to a support that didn’t master healing. I played a prot monk for years and with that I came to understand a different angle on helping your group.

I’ll keep playing GW2, but being a long time gamer who misses very pronounced archetypes, I’ll be dabbling in CU (Camelot Unleashed), as your qualms are valid and I’m coming to see I feel the same way a bit but choose to ignore it because GW2 is GW2, and that’s all it is.

Anet insists on wanting to make content harder without actually making it feel rewarding. The hardest pve in the game for instance (high level fotm) gives you absolutely nothing for your efforts.

The only feasible ways of making gold are TP (which is not what the majority wants to do) and CoF1 which will most likely be made more difficult without a boost to rewards, as usual.

To enjoy this game, you’d have to have been there from the start, have geared characters and actually enjoy WvW. -Everything- else is complete kitten and is completely unsatisfying.

Why does it seem like whenever anyone has a problem with this game, the fanboys show up to insult them and tell them to leave?

I have the same problem though. I love healing, even the dealing with stupid people. Tanking is ok, and being in a DPS race was never my thing. I chose to main a guardian because I was under the impression that they were the closest thing to dedicated healers the game had. Unfortunately, that seems to only mean while in well organized, high end guild groups. After 70 levels, every group seems to be everyone just running around swinging their weapons frantically. There doesn’t seem to be any recognizable group roles, it’s just a mad melee with every man fighting for himself.

I suppose I could just stick to guild only runs, were it not for the fact that the most active guild I’ve seen so far had something like 30 people in it.

You can still try and juice the support guardian in pve. All you have to do is go healing power(obviously) and run sigil of stamina. Constant endurance refreshes means repeated pbaoe heals for your team. You can also choose to run boon duration with this giving everything support oriented as possible. The boon duration is not jsut for protection and regen, but will also help with maintaining might. This in turn not just helps your earshot distance team members but will also put your damage at a decent level. Mix in some precision for perma vigor and you have yourself an amazing support character.

I just get kitten at things like this because people are too dense to figure kitten out and instead are quick to complain. If one likes to spend 80% of their time staring at health bars, then they shouldn’t be playing this game.

Even though a Guardian can protect you it’s not as brain-dead as not having to deal with damage at all, you still have to dodge, heal and pop defensive CDs.

Right, and all those dodges, heals, and defensive cooldowns will protect you whether or not there is a Guardian in the group.

And… your comments about wanting to pass off responsibility and/or challenge are silly and unnecessary, I’ve explained already that is apart of what I’m MISSING in GW2, it has less responsibility – not more.

I’m not sure about where you’re coming form when mentioning individuals having less responsibility; Everyone has to perform greatly and pay attention. I think you’re becoming deluded thinking that speciality like UO and other games where every class is clouding your judgement.

Let’s take WoW as you’ve probably played it and it’s the biggest MMO out there. The only reason why there are defined roles in that game is because xyz all need each other NO MATTER WHAT. Now let’s look at gw2. XYZ still exist, you’re just being feeble minded and not looking at the grand picture. XYZ are necessary to get through most end-game content. the difference is, every class has a heal and I think that alone is clouding your judgement of roles.

When you play a priest in WoW arena, you don’t sit back and heal; You also help dps and cc. GW2 emphasizes those off roles. If you can’t wrap your mind around it then you should just quit.

Fire Fields

in Guardian

Posted by: Thz.7569

Thz.7569

Very situational and not all that effective given the fact you have to complete auto chain with hammer for it to be effective thusly almost always having the light field taking precedence when you want to mighty blow. Of course you can just not complete or move and put the fire field in a different area, but it’s too much of a hassle for what you get out of it.

It’s not as hard as you may think. When you do a combo finisher it always uses the oldest field if there is more than one active, so if you put down Purging Flames or Hallowed ground before you start your hammer chain (or a few seconds after a finished chain) then every Mighty Blow will give might stacks for the duration of the consecration (unless other people’s fields were there before yours).

The main problem I find with doing this is that you’re pretty much using up two ulities to just give you extra might. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with some extra stability and condition removal but they’re very unreliable for many situations due to the long cooldowns (even when traited). I prefer to just use them in the situations when their primary effect is needed and take the extra might stacks as a bonus.

That said if you’re playing in an organised party who help each other with conditions + healing and the likes (I mostly do PUGs or casual guild runs so can’t always rely on others) then having a guardian built purely for stacking loads of might wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.

Never said it was hard, I said it was a hassle. Plus you also mentioned wasting utility slots which I agree with. I feel that if you want to go the might route, EM+Staff is more than enough. Trying to utilize hammer and fire fields is meh.

I run the set up and traits for my Boon Guard. I wouldn’t change it to knights. Once you get skilled enough to dodge everything you wont need the extra toughness.

Weapon wise, I mainly use a staff for a Boon Guard so I have absolutely no problems getting crits things. By constantly maintaining 15-20 stacks of might for the entire team you are sufficiently making up for the damage you may are losing from not doing single high crits by spreading the damage through multiple mobs and critting more often (staff is also using sigil of strength to give more might to the team)

Even with 30% crit chance you will crit A LOT with the staff. By going Boon guard you aren’t really focused on self damage anyway. It is far superior to give the entire team extra damage as the entire groups overall DPS goes sky high. 30% is more than enough for what you need to do.

I have another set of knights armour with soldier runes with using all berserkers accessories and the damage is comparable.

I disagree with Thz about not taking AH though as no one is going to Buff the team if they are dead. Removing AH from the build reduces your own survival very dramatically. In higher lvl fractals without any AR it means life and death as it will save you if your main heal is on cooldown.

Healing in higher lvl fractals is a good buffer, but it wont save the team.

Re-read what I said in its entirety instead of looking only at the notion of dropping AH. He said he’s wearing clerics. AH basically doesn’t scale with healing power. Having added healing power will = high heal dodges on top of regens, etc. This gives yourself an auto replacement of AH and room to put points into more group utility. YOU need AH because you’re a boon duration guardian. Healing power guardians do not.

How can you heal if your dead? a healer Guardian needs to stay alive long enough to get out all his heals.

You cannot dodge roll if your dead. You cannot use healing breeze or shelter if your dead. Cant do anything if your dead. Self survival is also integral to contributing to the team. If people are constantly picking your kitten off the floor, your not doing your job. If hit by agony, your dodges alone will not give you enough healing to withstand it AND be hit by a mob since you’ve already wasted the dodges to heal yourself. Relying on dodges to heal means you wont have them when you need them the most.

Dropping AH means a reduction to your own survival. Reread my post again and replace the word buff with heal as its pretty much the same thing in a AH healing build.

You must not be aware of the coefficients in place. And please stop mentioning agony like it means something. You either have AR or you don’t; You either know how to avoid agony or you don’t. AH or not has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I play an AH guardian myself, but I know kitten well how effective HP can be when setup properly and I also know AH is unnecessary. AH on a healing power guardian is just a crutch for poor play, like running a ton of pvt in pve.

Also, the only reason I mentioned any of this in the first place is because he already went ahead and got clerics armor.

Swapping to knight’s is slippery in your situation because you’ll also be giving up power as the primary stat for your accessories and since your armor is clerics your power is already a lot lower. I say this is a big deal because power is -the- most important stat for raw damage As a guy linked, try gw2buildcraft and look at your effective power when tinkering around.

My opinion though is that if someone decides to go clerics gear, you should commit to that play style. For example: Not going AH, putting more points in perhaps virtues, getting more healing power to maximize your dodge heals, get a sigil of stamina on one of your weapons in pve to maintain healing, etc.

I do think the lower levels should give a lot more relics, at least for the daily chests. I was one of those unlucky ones who rarely got rings and when I did they were utter crap and so I was kinda stuck “relic grinding” little by little to finally get some AR for 20+.

Only thing I can say OP is to not think about it too much. Knock out a daily whenever you can just taking it slow. Eventually you’ll get AR and higher in level so don’t worry about it. However, there actually isn’t any real point to getting high level fotm as weapon skins have a really low rate and the dungeon overall is probably the least rewarding content in the game.

Since the buff to the ascended gear that give all stats, I have planned to get these for my guardian. Ascended berserker jewellery does has a good trade-off of crit damage to regular stats however (less than 10 stat points lost per 1% crit damage), and would be my second choice. Here is why I prefer all stats to berserker in the case of rings:

Since I prefer not to go full dps, I like to have my gear giving me lots of power, lots of precision, lots of toughness and enough vitality. Call these ‘useful stats’. I also want some crit damage when I think it’s a good trade-off. I will try to get as much of these stats as I can from my jewellry and fill the gaps with my armor.

Berserker ring gives:
171 useful stats + 8% crit damage

All stats ring gives:
172 useful stats + 6% crit damage + 43 healing power + 43 condition damage + 4% magic find.

In my opinion, 43 healing power + 43 condition damage + 4% magic find is worth more than 2% crit damage, so I will use the all stats ring.

Of course if you don’t want any vitality and feel you have enough toughness from your armor and/or traits then you wouldn’t treat the four ‘useful stats’ as equal. But if you know you’re going to at least need some vitality and extra toughness then going for all stats is definitely not a bad choice.

Issue is, when it comes to offense the most important stat above all else is power and going for celestial item pieces nets in a -huge- loss of it. If that doesn’t bother you though, then yeah it’ll still be decent.

I think a lot of people are being snippy and defending their own builds and play styles. In actuality, glass/boon/healing, etc all work. Depending on group comp. and whatnot, some can be more beneficial than others and this can continuously change with different pugs.

I choose to play a more offensive guardian but am traited 20virtues to make up for it. It’s a playstyle that agrees with me and I feel it more consistent because not everyone is in earshot for support/boon play types. However, I will never outright tell someone my build is better and that those are bad.

The biggest issue with guardians who want to go the healing power route is many of them sell themselves short without being dodge based and wasting points getting AH. But if someone knows what they’re doing, kitten right they will be helpful.

The only guardians I will straight up say are bad are those who go overboard on ptv stats. Other than that the rest are all viable and this thread ought to be more constructive.

Basically, you are on a track for success and you will still be very key in your dungeon running. Edit: Actually yeah, I was being optimistic but the aoe would be severely lacking. It’s probably the only thing that’s holding me back slightly. More opinions are welcome though, especially from those who have tried it .

As the title implicates, I’m wondering how it works out — more specifically in the 30s and 40s. I’ve always ran the standard GS or hammer but for fun I recently worked on a build with 30 radiance and am -very- pleased with the stats I was able to pull from it. I also did some testing of damage and cleave on test golems and it doesn’t seem that bad.

But before I go and drop a bunch of gold in revamping my guardian, I’d like to hear some opinions from people who have tried it.

For reference the build would be 0/30/30/5/5 and stats with food would be 66.28%crit, 2920armor, 95%crit damage and 14,345hp

Hammer: Good AoE burst and CC, lacks a solid auto-attack for PvP, but has highest PvE DPS. Best PvE weapon.

Hammer highest pve dps weapon? Was there a patch I missed?

It’s called math. The auto-attack damage of the Hammer is extremely high, but you need the enemy to stand inside of the symbol, meaning the full DPS can only be used in PvE. Mighty Blow deals more DPS than Whirling Wrath as well. Overall, Hammer deals more damage.

I feel like you don’t play the game because if you did, it’d be clear how much more damage the GS does outside of tooltips.

I know I’ve already said how I felt in this thread already, but I just got word that a few of my friends want to come back to the game — I don’t know even know where to begin explaining all of this to them. The only thing I could say to one of them is, “choose a main character because it’s the only one you’ll be able to fully gear”.

The OP isn’t asking for an easy way out, he’s suggesting freedom to every type of player to get the same rewards.

And let’s be real, even if the price of these were reduced by over 50%, that’s still a lot when you take into consideration that a single char will often have multiple types of gear for different situations/specs and that most people have more than one character.

Basically, somethings needs to change because we haven’t even hit weapons/armor yet and it’s already looking grim.

I share the same sentiments. Some days I’m able to play for several hours and other times I can go days without being able to play at all. This is why when I have a decent amount of time I go to fotm cause I can do a couple dailies there with a “reasonable” price for the rewards. The laurel costs are outrageous and with the addition of accessories for 40, the uphill slope turned into a mountain for me. Also, being in a large guild won’t help because it’s unlikely I’ll be able to make it everytime they decide to do these missions.

Obviously we’re going off of some basic information and a couple screenshots, so it’s possible there may actually be more ways included in this update — but by the way anet has been going about this lately, I highly doubt it and this is becoming very disheartening.

I’ll throw out some input.

Those saying hammer dps is comparable to gs have no clue. The only time the hammer can be said to be better than GS is in WvW because it has more cc and mighty blow is very -consistent-. But everywhere else the GS is far above in dps and basic control.

It really comes down to comparable base damages of the GS but the hammer’s auto taking way too long and mighty blow not having higher base value to show similar scaling to the ramp up damage of ww. Also mighty blow is not a reliable blaster finisher because most times you’ll finish a field you don’t want, often just giving retaliation.

Then we take into consideration that the hammer relies on the full auto chain for constant dps thus requiring traiting into symbols, whereas the GS can trait into things like 2h mastery making it that much more effective.

I use the hammer 95% of my time just because I -like- it, but I know I’m weaker in doing so and always notice a staggering difference in effectiveness for those times I want to carry a bit harder and whip out “old reliable”.

Its that time again folks (patch day)

I don’t think they’re going to do much of anything to us. Instead we’ll probably just whine at the lack of notes we get compared to the other classes.

You all are getting off topic. This was made because I got kittened and don’t want anyone to have the same accidental fate. Your qualms and opinions about fractal weapons have absolutlely kittening nothing to do with this.

My Progress With Tanking So Far

in Guardian

why to facetank boss and do minor damage if you can deal some serious damage or provide nice utility for group. In this game any class can take care for themselves so why tank?

Why tank, well because its the best overall damage mitigater/support in the game. It effectively removes damage from the team.

Minimal damage???
3k attack
3k armor
50-60% critchance
70-80%% critdamage

With a competent team you dont have to dress down to be able to tank.

And with that you can infact facetank almost everything in dungeons while bashing away and giving the same support as with any other style of play.

How are you pulling off those stats : ( ?

My guess is its a mix of valkyrie’s, knight’s, and berserker’s gear coupled with food buffs. So far i’ve managed to hit 2871 attack, 51% crit chance, 55% crit damage, 3032 armor, but im sadly only at 13445 hp. Granted im only knight’s, and berserker’s gear at the moment. Once i add in valkyrie’s you will most likely see the crit drop to 45% or so but hp should go up a few thousand or so.

Why would you be upset about that HP? We have enough mitigation and passive healing that low hp is a good thing.
