Leagues: a problem

in WvW

Posted by: TooBz.3065

TooBz.3065

IMO leagues are a terrible idea, unless something is done to even up the matchups. Knowing who you are going to fight and who is going to win takes some of the fun out of the game.

Of course, most of the time, once you know who you are going to fight, you know who is going to win. This is also a problem.

I don’t know the solution, but I do know that it doesn’t involve giving better rewards to the stacked servers winners in an uneven matchup.

About Free Trait Resets

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

TooBz.3065

I don’t think you can read anything into the change except that they wanted to make the change. The rationale may be the same as what people were saying 18 months ago, but I think it would be a mistake to say “they are finally listening”

Most likely, there were reasons that they did it the other way and those reasons have been mitigated or otherwise gone away.

I suspect the real reason is that the “gold sink” that was trait resets became so minimal in comparison that with the TP gold sink that they could get rid of it.

Some rewards are also being nerfed. So this could be a distraction. But instead of saying…
“there’s too much gold flowing into the economy, so we are nerfing champ bags. We know this is upsetting so we’re going to distract with by removing trait reset costs”

instead they say

“Great news, We realize we were wrong and were stiffing creativity, so we’ve decided to remove trait reset costs, of course this will cause an imbalance so we need to nerf a few rewards”

Not saying this was what happened or not, but the message does not always reflect the motive.

No Repair Costs = Rewarding Unskillful Play

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Do you run around and do hearts and events for the 1-2 silver reward?

If gaining 3-4 silvers does not cause you to do something, then losing 3-4 silvers will not cause you do to anything.

If I run around doing 10 world boss events and pres per day and get 2s per each, then it accumulates into 6g per month.

  • If they nerf it to 1.5s, I’ll get 4.5g.
  • If someone dies 1 time per hour and spends 1 hour on these 10 events, he used to lose 0.45g from it; so after nerf, he’ll be effectively missing -1.05g.
  • If someone dies 4 times per hour and spends 1 hour on these 10 events, he used to lose 1.80g from it; so after nerf, he’ll be effectively getting +0.30g.

In a month? I’m not rich, or even close, and even I don’t care about 2 gold / month. (I freely acknowledge that this his may be why I’m not rich)

No Repair Costs = Rewarding Unskillful Play

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I think it will have the most negative impact in WvW.

In WvW, there is no waypoint fees. Only repair cost.

It keeps psychological warfare which is routing. If they think that the zerg they are in will fail, they’ll flee. If there is only losses if they keep staying, then there is no point in fighting further. It keeps the mentally of “I don’t want to die.”

If people are still running away even without repair costs I don’t think I ever want to play WvW again. With repair costs at least there is a valid excuse for running away.

Of course there is. A strategic retreat and regroup can be good. Running away and getting into a tower / castle can allow you to man / build and defend the tower. Running can provide time to heal up. On some maps you have to run fairly far to get back to where you were, so the time factor can be important, especially if you are trying to meet up with a superior force somewhere on the map.

It’s not like people have a reason to stand alone in front of 30 people and say “FREE BAGS, GET YOUR TAG IN”, unless of course, you do (and sometimes you do).

My legendaries/dyes/T3 are a waste?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TooBz.3065

TooBz.3065

You additional legendaries are not a “waste” because they can change stats and other weapons can’t. This may not be valuable to you, but they remain better than ascended gear because of that.

Regarding dyes. Suppose you have celestial dye on multiple characters and they gave you back a celestial dye, what would you do? Sell it, right. You, me, and everyone else who buys dyes for multiple characters.

This would cause the price of the dye to go down, allowing more people to have it on their account, which would make the dye more common. So I think the unidentified dye solution is pretty good. Especially if you are trying to maintain the exclusivity of the dye (note: I don’t care about exclusivity, but I understand a lot of people do.)

Hi all,
I recently purchased some crystals (ty sale) and I have over 300 stones. I think them allowing us to actually have a use for stones is a wonderful thing and I’m really glad they did it. You don’t deserve a refund, nor do I for my crystals. We bought them for their original use, converting one skin to another. Now they are allowing you to potentially make multiple changes to multiple items for one crystal. I don’t see how there is any room to complain in this situation.

Thanks,

What makes you think you’re entitled to a refund?

Will they? I use transmutation crystals to move around expensive runes on non-salvagable gear (like temple armor)? I still move runes from one piece of gear to another with the wardrobe system?

Did ANet intend to manipulate the dye market?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: TooBz.3065

TooBz.3065

Yes, it’s intentional. Each dye how has the possibility to transform into an unidentified dye on the 15th. Let’s say that an unidentified dye is expected to be worth 40s on the 15th (but only if you use them). The expected value of a duplicate dye is also 40s. Therefore the current value of any dye is probably somewhere around 4/5 or 40s.

Once the transformation to unidentified dyes occurs, expect the price of those common dyes to plummet.

Personally, I’m very excited about the change. In answer to the original question, historically, ambiguous statements have not gone our way. There has been a history of announcements that sound good, but, in hindsight, aren’t nearly as good as they first appeared.

Because of this, I think the community is very skeptical of announcements, always looking for how this could be bad. My own thought was, “I wonder if I have to pay to dye my clothes now.”

No. This isn’t about stomping or being stomped, because I can always play EotM for a more fair matchup.

This is the second time I’ve been on a server that has been victimized by the rankings inability to respond to changes in rank. Last season I was on CD, which has lost a lot of guilds and was mid-plummet when the season started. I’m sure SOR feels the same way right now.

Now, to your issues. There is a serious balance problem (really really serious) in WvW in NA. I understand that this isn’t as much of a problem in Europe. I have barely been in WvW for the last two week cause it’s not fun. Both being stomped and stomping is not fun. (Although, I admit, stomping is better ;-))

This is about trying to make sure that the match ups are fair. DB has been stomping people like crazy, but it’s because SOR is absent. and we’ve fought them for three weeks and therefore received ridiculously inflated scores.

If, on the other hand, SOR fell like the stone it should, then our score would be more appropriate. I don’t mind getting pushed into gold because we are the 6th seed. I object to being placed as the 5th seed because the system can’t figure out that a previously top 3 server is now in the mid teens.

Please make the ranking system more responsive to massive changes in the servers. After this week Dragonbrand is going to be 5th in the rankings because Sanctum of Rall has tanked and the system can’t account for it.

As a Dragonbrand resident I can tell you that the server is woefully unprepared for this shift. However, we probably we be in the Gold league anyway (Congratulations to FA for successfully being the top in silver again).

I don’t know what the proper ranking system is, but I think the current only expects a degree on consistency and slow change that frankly doesn’t exist.

This proposed change doesn’t sound good to me, although I’ll wait to hear the specifics. One thing I suspect is that trait unlocks might be gated by currently unpopular content in order to boost participation metrics. For example, new characters might have to finish the Dredge fractal to unlock a trait used in many builds.

The A-Net staff know which traits and builds are popular/meta, and they also have data on which activities don’t get done, so I can see putting one behind the other. Although I might be too cynical. We’ll have to see.

(Anecdote: This proposed change reminds me of one of the old Ultima games where you could not level up your character past certain points unless you completed specific quests.)

For more experienced players, it seems less compelling. This isn’t new stuff you are introducing, you’re just taking the old benefits and hiding them behind old content. Like hiding last years Christmas presents in the outfield of a well groomed baseball field.

I’m pretty sure in that blog post that was linked that it said the leagues would be set by march 14th which is obviously how they determined the preloaded prices, based on where you were at the end of that week. It wouldn’t make any sense set prices if servers can still switch leagues. Also the patch notes say the leagues are already split there really isn’t a lot to figure out.

I don’t think so, the link says that pre-tournament pricing will be set based on the server rank on March 14th. Tournament pricing will be set based on the rank of the server on March 28th.

That at least somewhat implies that the March 28th rank will be the tournament position.

[Suggestion] Legendary Sigil Library

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I gave mathematical examples of why it’s better, both effectively and financially, to just have several ascended weapons with different sigils than a Legendary. As for pseudo-legendary like Mjolnir, Infinite Light, and I’d even go as far to say Immobulus, it could be fair to allow it to be included on those. But that’s a different story, the Legendaries are the focus for this thread.

The smart alec response is to say “ANet does not correct player mistakes. You made the legendary, face the consequences.” However, while I understand why you would like this, and I understand that it’s a major pain not to be able to swap out your stuff, the fact remains that there is a substantial cost to everyone else for doing so.

For me, if I swap out a sigil I have to either destroy the existing sigil, destroy the weapon, or use an upgrade extractor. It always comes down to destroying the weapon or the sigil, for you it’s just destroying the sigil (the price on the upgrade extractor is too steep).

You could also create ascended weapons with the desired stats / sigils and run around with them. (As you recommend that I do). You already have your legendary, so that’s a sunk cost and should weigh into whether or not you create an ascended whatever for your sigil of night.

Personally, I would rather have seen the entire system implemented in a more player friendly manner, but I don’t think the answer is to give even more benefits to legendary weapon holders.

They shouldn’t have a maintenance cost

I disagree. There is a maintenance cost to every change in this game. No one can just remove or swap out sigils without cost. Either you destroy the sigil or destroy the weapon. I don’t understand why you think legendary users should be able to do it.

Because they are hard to make? What about ascended gear, it’s hard to make. What about Infinite Light? It’s hard to make. Jormag’s Breath, etc…

There’s lots of things that are hard to make. You shouldn’t suddenly be free of the hard choices just because you ground out a legendary. You are already amazingly benefited from being able to swap stats, whereas, every other person in the game is trapped into a single build for (more or less) forever.
