When they did the WvW map reveal they talked about changes to upgrades and “other” things they weren’t ready to mention. This is just that additional information they wouldn’t talk about before. It’s not a big reveal and not special…unless they’re holding more back for the Ready Up tomorrow.

Criticism locked without response or reason?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

Why are topics with valid, constructive critique getting locked without so much as a moderator response?

Is it taboo for players to suggest how things can be done better, or point out flaws in the way ANet does things? Only bad companies attempt to suppress and silence criticism, rather than act on it.

Players post here to vent frustrations because we have no one from ANet to reliably communicate to about issues (even though we supposedly have a dedicated forum communications team, HA!). By blatantly locking all potentially critical threads and posts, all it does it end up looking bad on ANet as a company, implying they simply don’t want to hear what they could be doing better and that their customer’s opinions do not matter.

Take the good with the bad, don’t cherry pick what you want to listen to, ANet

Venting and ranting rarely involve anything close to constructive criticism. A vast majority of complaint threads have nothing constructive about them and quickly veer off into a kitten-fest of trash talking Anet and/or other posters. Those threads that do talk about things constructively and don’t go off topic tend to not get locked.

It’s pretty simple. Be constructive, be factual and be respectful.

Torsailr.8456

This was talked about in the Guild Halls CDI, but that wasn’t the focus of the CDI really and was more of a side topic briefly.

A month or so later in the WvW forums there was discussion around the WvW population imbalances and there was some dev involvement in that thread. Alliances bubbled up to the top of his list for how he might try to help the population issue.

However, both discussions were months ago and the subject has either been discarded by the devs or is somewhere in development. My guess is if they do implement it, then it will be done with the expansion; so keep your eyes open for more WvW announcements over the next few months.

they were vague on anything regarding condi/boon changes but based on what they said, boon duration will be handled in one of two ways.

1. The same as any other stat; ie. bigger numbers on gear.
2. The same as class specific mechanics. Half of the percentage boost will be made baseline for classes that have boon duration options in traits and the other half will be added if you choose that line as a core specialisation.

What ever happened to...

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Torsailr.8456

The only reason I can think of people not wanting finishers used on some human form mobs in PvE would be people saying “MY IMMERSION!” in map chat.

I can think of several others besides immersion. My favorite reason is that I didn’t particularly enjoy the mechanic so I’d rather they not include it everywhere. It was ok the first dozen times or so, but then it got old and annoying. I’d much rather kill them and not have to worry about stomping them.

If it stays an optional side feature that I can ignore, then I have no problem with it being in the game. I just don’t want it to spread everywhere.

An Approach to Fishing!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

Honestly I think you’re trying too hard OP. You’ve made a well though out concept that could work but I have to ask what is the point? This almost feels like a solution looking for a problem to fix.

If you want mats, you can already get them by just killing the fish and food items are so easily acquired through the TP that this seems like a needlessly elaborate way of getting them. From what I’ve observed, the people that use food keep stacks of it on hand and the amount of time someone might run out unexpectedly is small.

I think a better way to approach fishing is through a cosmetic change and/or toys. Think of all the costume brawl toys you can get that give you different skills to use. Instead of being a brawl weapon it would be a fishing tool. Instead of long term buffs that food gives you, it could grant a few seconds of a “silly” buff similar to candy corn. This uses already established mechanics and doesn’t involve massive dev work for a new UI, new objects, new mechanics, etc.

Personal Story Restoration update

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

A reset to zero shouldn’t do that and if its a bug, it should be fixable, taking the bug as unfixable for granted is just in my opinion unexcuseable.

It sounds like most of the PS is hard coded a certain way, which is fine if what you’re doing is going to have some fixed way of doing things. The PS was very linear and gave them that fixed way of doing things so they hard coded it in the belief that some value would never change.

Changing the PS to being replayable involves introducing a lot of variables where there weren’t any AND catching all the hard coded elements and changing them to the new variables. This can be a nearly impossible task and definitely will introduce an insane amount of game stopping bugs.

In such a situation it’s almost never worthwhile to attempt such a thing and by far better to remake it from scratch. When S2 was released it was mentioned that the devs wanted to make S1 replayable; given that would require a similar rewrite to the PS I would imagine they’d do both at the same time.

I wouldn’t expect any such rewrite to happen any time soon though. Possibly another year or two out, if it happens at all.

The "Willpower" excuse

in Lore

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

In any kind of personal struggle willpower is always a factor. For now it’s a temporary excuse for why not all Sylvari are affected and given that the story hasn’t advanced yet, it is a sufficient one. I can live with it until HOT.

That said, given the level of storytelling we’ve seen so far I expect one of three things to happen.
1: No explanation. It was just pure willpower that stopped it.
2: The pale tree protected them for reasons and magic babble stuffy things.
3: There will be no reason for it for 2 years because they may not know and then release an explanation in the future story that ends up being a partial retcon to what happened.

What I don’t expect is an in depth story driven discovery of what’s going on right now. It’s going to feel hollow and weak for a while but eventually we’ll get used to “willpower” and shrug it off like all the rest of the loosely covered plot devices.

Maybe I’m a little cynical when it comes to MMO storytelling.

Presentation is Everything

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

Yes, smooth presentations can help sell an item to people relatively unfamiliar with what your product is. In a panel like that it really doesn’t matter; what does matter is what they said, not how they said it. And as the players have proven repeatedly, we want to hear from developers, not PR people.

All you’re doing is trying to shame the presenters by pointing out that they were nervous and trying to hide it behind “advice for anet”. Don’t do this, it’s just rude and insulting to everyone. Calling people out on not being a professional public speaker is just going to make them more nervous next time and less likely to even want to do it again. Not to mention it’ll make Anet even more cagey about releasing information.

If you aren’t looking to play World Vs World with your friend then your server doesn’t matter. If you party up you’ll usually get placed in the same map when you enter, and if you don’t you can always join the other’s map. If you do want to play WvW with your friend then you can always buy a transfer later.

As to how population is calculated, there’s been little to no dev discussion on it. Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest it’s based on accounts created on that server.

The devs stated in some interviews at Pax East that each specialization will get it’s own week of talk. Add in Guild Halls, Guild updates, and WvW and you’re looking at 12 weeks easily and doesn’t include any other filler weeks like we had last week. End of june is the earliest I’d expect it and August for the anniversary seems plausible.

Guild Capes

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

Pretty much everyone wants capes in GW2. GW1 had capes that tie into your guild, which is what I think they should do here. Hopefully, when they decide to talk more about their new guild systems they’ll introduce a new guild ‘cape’ back piece that comes with your guilds emblem printed on it. Since they’ve already told us we were getting capes at some point, the expansion would serve as a great way to introduce capes into the game.

Feel free to do a google search for GW2 capes and see what the forum links say about it. “Pretty much everyone” is actually closer to some minority percentage.

Why must you rely on quest to level up?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

So I recently bought it due to sales but I’m no stranger to MMORPGs.

I played to level 8 and realized I’m not exactly allowed to explore because if there are no quest there I have no reason to kill anything in that area.

Completely false. You can go anywhere at any point in time at any level. You can walk into a level 80 zone if you want, but you’ll die quickly. You kill things for loot, xp and crafting materials. You have reasons to kill everything even without quests.

Why would you do it this way? You got a gigantic world but the moment you run out of quest you have no reason to stay in the area. It’s bad gameplay design and puts you in a linear path through the entire world.

As I said above, you have other reasons to be in an area aside from events. Events usually repeat every 10-20 minutes too. You can also explore the map for Vistas and POIs or general map completion; all of which provide you with experience. Map completion is actually one of the easier and quicker ways of leveling. GW2 has plenty of bad design decisions, this isn’t one of them.

MMORPG are not supposed to be linear.

The personal story is the only linear part of this game and you don’t even have access to that yet.

Also can I even spec into new and unique combat skills? So far I haven’t gotten any stat points or skill points. Gears are the boring progressive type which most MMORPG use.

You’ll unlock new options for builds as you level. You won’t start getting traits until 30 and skill points start around 10-11 or so. Gear caps out at Lv 80 ascended, after that it’s all horizontal progression.
