Transmutation won’t affect it.
If I remember correctly each time you put it into the MF to upgrade it resets the stats back to selectable. You’re getting a new item, not the same one beefed up.

Did you even play the game? Mordi killed the fleet, the only way we beat him was by going into the dream and killing his mind, and then we had backed him self up in the little cabbage that could. So we could not beat him the same way we beat Zhitan. He slapped us about and left the pact a broken mess. We got lucky. This time we do not have the pact, Kryta have there hands full with White Mantle and possibly a Murssat.the threat is very real, we only have our whits and ability to save the world.

No, I guess because I have a different opinion on the dragons than you I haven’t played the game.

Mordy destroyed the fleet and corrupted a bunch of sylvari then a couple weeks/months/some arbitrary time later, we went in the the dream and tried to kill him. Mordy attacked a couple forts outside the Heart of Maguuma and made a few vines poke out of the ground but at no time did he try to advance on us. His armies never invaded Maguuma or Kryta or anywhere, its like there was an invisible wall in Silverwastes that he couldn’t pass except for a few minions at a time. Why wasn’t he attacking us everywhere? He clearly had the capability. Instead he just sat there and twiddled his thumbs while we came to kill him.

Elder Dragons are huge nigh-unstoppable forces that roll over anything in the path in their hunger for more magic to eat. They expand their domains to corrupt more minions and get more magic to become even bigger monsters. Where were the legions of Mordrem outside of HoT? Where were the huge massive clusters of vines tearing apart cities? Where were the hordes of corrupted sylvari? For some inexplicable reason (ie the plot bus said so), Mordy didn’t bring his power to bear on us.

Heck, when we came to kill him he just let it happen. He could have easily crushed us with vines while we were attacking his mind. Since we were in the heart of his domain there should have been legions of Mordrem around that could have overwhelmed our allies and killed us. After we defeated his mind and he could have made a backup elsewhere, he clearly had the time to do it when he started asserting his control over Trahearne before we killed him; his domain is the mind after all, that should have been easy for him.

We accept it because the plot manual says its going to happen but thats about the only reason for me to accept how it ended.

So yeah, Mordy didn’t feel like the big bad that Elder Dragons are supposed to be and I don’t really expect Primordus or Lazarus to feel that threatening either. But thats just my opinion on it.

Try the Revenant. I’m running Hammer with Sword/Axe and Jalis/Glint and Commander gear.

The hammer gives me good range and some evasion/blocks for survivability. Sword 3 and Axe 4 are gap closers and Sword 2 has Chill to slow things down. If I’m surrounded Vengeful hammers + Sword 3 works well and Glints facets give some nice buffs. Forced Engagement and Hammer 5 can decimate a breakbar if its not massively upscaled.

Its not an overtuned build for massive DPS but I’ve got excellent survivability in HoT and I still manage to have good burst DPS. Unless I accidentally aggro too much I usually don’t have much to fear.

Also Necros with wells and life siphoning builds have medium range and are very tough. I can solo things with my Necro that I’d never try with other classes; I can simply siphon health nearly as fast as they can take it away and I have shroud which gives me another effective HP pool. I also use a condi build so the high toughness of a lot of HoT monsters isn’t a big deal.

Caithe. (LVS3 Possible Spoilers)

Torsailr.8456

Caithe is a child. She doesn’t have the wisdom of experience to guide her actions yet. Like most children, she can reason and intuit when something is wrong but not necessarily know how/when to deal with it. Even when they know they should say something, the fear of the consequences can often make a child keep silent even if it makes things worse for those around them.

The Pale Tree gifted all sylvari with certain traits and abilities and gave them the tools to get through life. But each sylvari still need to figure out how to live in the world.

Does that excuse her actions? Not really.
Does it mean she’s beyond redemption? I don’t think so.

I think she’s finally hit that breaking point where she can’t ignore or hide from her past anymore and now she needs to deal with it. She’s confused, lost and sorry about everything. She doesn’t know how to be better but she knows she wants to be. Its a first step in a long road of growing up.

I think we already passed the point of your first concern. Here we have the elder dragons, creatures many thousands of years old with an unfathomable amount of power capable of making the mightiest beings in the world flee in terror…and we killed 2 in 4 years….

Zhaitan I can see the case being made that it took decades (or longer) to work up to the point where we could kill him. Then Mordy wakes up, and by most accounts is stronger than Zhaitan, yet we kittensmack him as soon as he wakes up. And now we have Primordus…are we just going to roll over and kick him in our sleep?

At this point the only way the dragons could feel even remotely threatening to me is if we lose to Primordus in the next expansion and cede control over large sections of the world to him. Mordy destroyed a fleet of airships and both dragons have taken their share of allies but we haven’t actually lost yet. We haven’t been beaten or even pushed back. Zhaitan never claimed additional lands despite having an army that only gets stronger the longer we fight. Mordy reached some fingers into the world but never took over any lands. Their threat feels very hollow now.

The elder dragons no longer feel like a threat, they don’t even feel powerful. They’re just the flavor of the week bad guy to stomp.

areas unable to be explored?

Torsailr.8456

Its most likely some limitation with the game engine and either needing to give those maps a location in the world or when you leave the fractal instance (outside of the world) it tries to find the correct location in the world to display the personal WP. I don’t think either scenario precludes us from ever being able to go there if Anet chooses to.

Regardless, I wouldn’t expect us to ever go to that area. New maps are likely to be focused around each of the dragons and there isn’t one around there. We already did Mordy and Jormag is further east and the rest are south of us.

Load/Save Build Templates

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Torsailr.8456

Anet has likely been aware that build templates are missing since before launch, and is very much aware of how much the player base wants them. There is no need to bump this thread.

Hopefully they are aware, but until they make an official announcement saying save/load build templates are coming, I’m going to keep rehashing and bumping this to make sure they know :P

My memory is a bit fuzzy on the topic but I recall a dev (possibly with colin?) interview around the time of HoT launching where this topic was brought up. Its something they know we want and they were working on it in the background but there were some other things that needed to get done first. IE, its a side project some of the devs get to work on when not busy with other stuff.

But that info is a year old…who know what has changed since then.

I’m sure deep beneath Primordus lair there’s a giant aquifer ready to be filled. If you look carefully you’ll probably be able to see an aquifer of tears well near some of the bosses for them to relax with after a party wipe. I’ll be curious if the skulls they drink from will have those little umbrella things in them.

Who is a viable healer in raids?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

It looks like Druid, Ele, and Revenant will all be mandatory in raids.

Druid will be necessary for the massive heal bursts to heal after one of the strong attacks.

Ele and Revenant will both be necessary for heal over time and versatility. Both are the only professions that have the versatility to be a healer without sacrificing support or damage capability. Other professions sacrifice a lot more to be a healer.

On the surface I would expect 1 Druid, 1 Revenant (Ventari/Glint), 2 Eles, 3 control/damage specs, and 3 pure DPS specs in raids.

Something to keep in mind is that maps have a range for their level (25-35) and there are pockets of smaller ranges scattered throughout the map. These pockets are usually 1-3 levels in size (ie 25-28, 27-30, 29-31, etc) and there’s no real formula for where these pockets are placed. It’s very possible for a level 25 pocket to be next to a level 30 pocket and not all map entrances are in a lv 25 pocket.

So it’s very possible to enter a map at something other than it’s lowest level and to walk to a different area and get jumped by something far over your level. You can see the level of the mob next to it’s name, just keep an eye on it when you’re exploring so you don’t find yourself fighting something impossible to beat.

The F1 F2 Overlap

Torsailr.8456

I didn’t have a problem seeing the F2 was there but the position did make it difficult to use. While I agree the problem with cooldown visibility is an issue, my problems were more mechanical based.

I have a very small laptop and the sound controls are default mapped to the function keys. If I want to use the function keys I need to contort my hand to use the Fn key near the left Ctrl + F2 (which is awkward) or use my mouse. I kinda need the mouse for other things and my mouse is old so sometimes finer control doesn’t work as well; moving it across the screen is fine, trying to move it 1/8th of an inch to get that sliver of a box is a problem.

I can’t imagine I’m the only one not using good hardware for the game. Separating the F1 and F2 buttons to be next to each other like most other classes would make using it a lot easier for me.

There are 5 guild missions. Bounty, Trek, Rush, Challenge, Puzzle. Your guild needs to unlock access to these before you can do them.

If you’re good and you’re lucky you might be able to solo guild bounties or guild rushes.

If you activate your guild puzzle/challenge/rush when there’s another large group there you can team up to get it done, you can also get credit for someone elses run as long as you have it active in your guild tab.

Trek doesn’t offer commendations.

You should also consider joining a PvX guild to do missions with.

No time is good for everyone and someone is always going to feel hurt over it. So they do the only thing they can do, release patches when it’s easiest for them to do so. Usually this means during Anets business hours. Does it suck for your friend? Absolutely. Is there anything Anet can reasonably do to fix it? Not likely.

Raid Content concern

Torsailr.8456

Didn’t they talk about possibly not allowing you to swap traits/utilities once inside?
I thought I remembered them mentioning they were still debating what exactly to let people change in there.

That was a miscommunication by the devs. Currently in most boss fights you can retreat out of combat to reset your build or regain health. In Raids you won’t be able to retreat to a “safe area” to get out of combat to reset traits. However, between fights (running/exploring/etc) you can change builds as much as you want.

Instanced Raids Confirmed [merged]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Torsailr.8456

The problem is that their base systems limit them immensely. The lack of tank and healers reduces what they can do with a raid.

Not true. The lack of healers and tanks does not reduce any of their options at all. Not having dedicated roles will increase their design options. GW2 also has soft roll sets with damage, control and support; any predefined role elements in the game revolve around those.

The huge variance in health limits it as well, you can’t have a boss putting out a 20k hit if some classes struggle to get 18k hp.

This is not a limit. It just changes some of the variables and how they’re dealt with. Their options aren’t any less if HP ranges go from 10K to 30K than from 20K to 25K. If your purposely designing for one hit kills your HP is irrelevant and you have bigger problems to deal with anyway.

Gear level limits them, are they designing for ascended gear because that sort of ruins the whole “ascended isn’t required”.

Raids will most likely be built around Exotic gear, the same as the rest of PVE. The only place designed for Ascended is upper level fractals and that’s only for the use of AR.

The horrible class balance will mean that certain builds will find it easy and others will find it absolutely impossible.

This is purely Learn to Play. I have yet to find any content I could not complete with any profession. If I had trouble it’s because I wasn’t very good with the class. This is not a Raid issue.

I really hope they can do something challenging and unique, but I’m afraid it will just be full of gimmicks(Swap weapon or die, dodge the raid wipe or die) and the beserker meta will reign supreme.

HOT Beta has already shown that they are capable of doing more than that. Dungeons and Fractals have largely been built that way in the past and I’m sure there will be elements of that in Raids and future Fractals. I’m also sure that they’ve learned from their mistakes and are making steps to resolve it.

ArenaNet just does not have the balance team to tune things that tightly.

2 years ago I’d agree with you but they’ve been improving and things are tuned much better now. But if you’re going to demand that the Raids be hard enough for the top 1% hard core Raid runners then you’re going to be disappointed.

BWE2 Masteries Suggestion

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

Perhaps, all those new Beta achievements that award Mastery Points will be the answer.

My concern was less about the availability of mastery points once HoT releases than with the ability to test higher levels of a mastery without enough mastery points to get them.

BWE2 Masteries Suggestion

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

They want to test how the progression of masteries work. That’s why they’re not resetting the mastery points between BWE1 and BWE2. Your suggestion would go against what they’re trying to test.

A future BWE may do just that, though, if they wish to have that beta tested.

No, it wouldn’t go against it. You need to first gain enough XP to finish the mastery then you need to spend mastery points to get the ability. Having enough mastery points to get all the abilities doesn’t stop you from needing to get the experience to finish the masteries. It does however, ensure that you can get all the abilities and not be limited by the artificial scarcity of mastery points in this section of the map.

You can’t test the progression if you don’t have the mastery points to progress with.

BWE2 Masteries Suggestion

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

Give the players enough Mastery Points to max out 2-3 masteries.

From playing BWE1 it seemed there wasn’t enough points to max out one mastery (I may have been wrong) but definitely not enough to do much more than that. I’m doubtful there will be that many more mastery points in the second half of VB than there were in the first which raises a problem.

If the purpose of the BWE2 is to test and bug find, we won’t be able to test and find potential bugs in the higher levels of the masteries. Giving the beta accounts enough mastery points to max out some of the masteries would let everyone test those out.

What Anet might ban you for is abusing the report function; for example if you don’t like a guy so you constantly send verbal abuse reports to Anet because the guy is talking about the weather.

However, if you feel like you’ve been abused verbally, then report it. Anet will NOT ban you for it. Even if Anet disagrees with you they will not ban you for it. Gaile has been very clear on this over the years.

The Revenant: Can we get it early?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

There’s only a problem because you’re choosing to make one. I’m sure your guild will be doing the new zones a week or a month after release if you choose to level the Revenant first. Alternatively, the Revenant will still be there later if you choose to explore the new zones first.

The problem is that you seem to feel you have to do both immediately upon release. And you can, by playing half your time in the new zones and half your time leveling the Revenant. It’ll take longer to to both, but you can do it. I’m also sure there will be at least a few other members of your guild trying to level a Revenant that you could party with and do together.

Since there will be masteries for Tyria and HOT, at some point you’ll need to play in Tyria to get all the content from the expansion. I’m sure some of your guildies will be doing that as well.

So…I’m not seeing what the issue is. Play a new revenant, play an old char, explore HOT, explore Tyria, anything you do will likely have some participation with your guildies and eventually you’ll be seeing it all. You aren’t missing out on anything or losing anything with any of your choices. The only conflict here is the one you’re making for yourself.

Also, not releasing expansion content ahead of the expansion is not bad game design.

You’re taking something Gaile said out of context and further warping it to make it mean something it doesn’t come close to meaning.

The OP of that thread was trying to state HoT is a failed expansion even though it hasn’t been released yet. I’m hoping everyone can see that judging something as failed or not before all the details are fully known, much less played, is premature. Calling such a statement premature is putting it kindly. To say “at best” in that context means you’re being very generous with how you’re describing something when the reality is much lower.

At Best has nothing to do with the Beta or release dates.

Would a Veteran BWE make sense?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Torsailr.8456

Unfortunately the CDI seems to be Chris Whitesides’ pet project here and when he left nobody picked it up despite promises of it. Things change and people are busy, it’s understandable, but still unfortunate.

Yes any dev post can trigger troll posts and rants. Moderation should clear up the trolls and rants are fine if they’re done constructively…or at least without devolving into flaming.

Dev presence alone won’t directly lead to more constructive feedback but they can help it along by telling players what they need feedback on. The RNG and API (Lawton Campbell and Pat Cavit are awesome) threads are both examples of devs interacting and guiding discussions and both threads have remained constructive and helpful. Unfortunatly the RNG thread seems to have died though.

Another example is what Robert Gee and Roy Cronacher have done with the profession BWE feedback posts today. He’s updated us on what feedback they’ve collected and how they’re using it and, in at least one post, said what’s not being worked on and why. While there has been some grumbling, the presence of a dev also works to help players self moderate. A lot of the negativity stems from lack of communication and, not surprisingly, dev interaction eliminates most of that. I haven’t read through all the feedback in the player made threads for it, but things seem to be moving forward constructively.

Would a Veteran BWE make sense?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

My goal is not to make Anet only listening to veteran feedback, I am just trying to find a way to streamline better feedback, regardless if that feedback is implemented in the game or not.
I am not trying to highlight or filter good feedback but to minimize unconstructive feedback.

I agree that better feedback is necessary; I don’t think a veteran BWE would accomplish it. I think two things are necessary for better feedback:
1. More dev interaction.
2. More player education on good feedback.

Perhaps I’m overly pessimistic but I don’t believe either is possible here. The first because company policy and/or time availability inhibits dev interaction and the second because most players don’t care enough.

Enough with my pessimism though…how could this work? Perhaps a CDI style feedback thread for each issue (Chronomancer, Tempest, Revenant, events, maps, etc).

Start with Gaile or an appropriate dev creating a feedback thread that starts with an overview of the discussion and rules for posting. The rules and overview post is important to tell players what’s expected and what the devs need to know in feedback. It also tells them how to give the feedback.

Follow that with strict moderation that deletes any post not meeting those rules. The heavy moderation is important to keep the thread on track and acts as a negative reinforcement of the rules; if you can’t follow the rules then you forfeit your voice.

Also, frequent dev acknowledgement of the topics discussed would be important. Frequent being at least every other day, preferably every day though. Dev attention alone is usually enough to keep threads civil and on topic. It also allows the feedback to be a discussion instead of a one sided rant.

Would a Veteran BWE make sense?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

This is a bad concept that could not accomplish it’s stated goals.

First, as others have pointed out, what is a veteran? That in itself is a question without a valid answer and attempting to answer it would only alienate people and bring a lot of grief to Anets’ door. But for the sake of argument lets say Anet comes up with a definition everyone agrees with…

You make the assumption that vets are better at giving good feedback than new players; just reading these forums kinda proves that to be false.

You also make the implication that there is a different demographic between new players and veteran players which would lead to better feedback. Without evidence to the contrary it is more likely that new players have a similar, or more likely larger, demographic to veterans. Neither a similar nor larger demographic would inherently give better feedback.

What would doing this actually change for Anet?
There would be a smaller pool of people to get data from which, by default, would mean fewer data points to compare. This would seem to be a bad thing for beta testing.

You’ve prescreened your testers which will skew your results. Many veterans develop a sense of tunnel vision for how the game should be played and play the game accordingly. This automatically removes certain edge cases from testing. Also, in the case of testing specializations that by design change how the profession is meant to be played can create a lot of confusion and bad feedback. If you’re so locked into a certain mindset that you can’t accept a different way to play the profession then you’re never going to give good feedback. New players don’t have this tunnel vision and are more accepting of changes. They bring a new perspective to the feedback that is just as valuable as veteran feedback. Again, veteran only seems like a bad thing for beta testing.

What has this not done for Anet?
Actually improved the quality of feedback.

To do that you need to educate people how to give good feedback, which they’ve tried doing. Sadly, many people don’t want to learn how or just don’t care to learn or just flat out refuse to give good feedback for reasons… And this is a problem for vets and new people alike.

In short, doing this just makes things harder for Anet with no benefit. This just feels like you’re looking for a way to give Vets a higher status than newer players in something.

I wouldn’t expect the next beta for several weeks or maybe next month; it takes time to evaluate the feedback. Also, consider the specializations; it makes more sense for them to release a few more for testing in the next beta. My guess is the next beta will be after they finish releasing the specializations, which is at least 5 weeks.

Best time to use Tomes of Knowledge?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Torsailr.8456

Torsailr.8456

Your actual level makes no difference when using a Tome of Knowledge. If you’re 50% towards LV 30 and use one then you’ll be 50% towards LV31 after. Same holds true for any level and percentage.

The difficulty leveling doesn’t really change between levels. The advantage dungeons have is when you complete a path you get 75% of your levels XP. IE, if it takes 100,000 XP to complete complete a full level then the dungeon gives you 75,000 XP. It means every 2 dungeon paths you do you’ll get 1.5 levels out of it. Depending on your skill that could be anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

In comparison, I can complete a map in 2-3 hours which gives me 2-4 levels depending on the map.

I would probably save them until you’re close to something you want and are impatient for it, such as getting dungeon access or those last few levels to 80.

Mobs difficulty feedback [merged]

I agree with some of the posts above that the action in this zone is just a bit too intense.

The density of mobs does up the challenge a bit but despite that I actually like that. From a non-gameplay perspective, we’re entering enemy lands and trying to attack what passes for the Mordrem fortress. I’d be very disappointed if there weren’t mobs everywhere. This way it actually feels like we’re not in friendly territory anymore.

As a whole I’d agree with the OP. I think most of my problems have stemmed from 3 areas: a build ill-equipped for the mob, inexperience with the specialization or bugs. The first two will be fixed with my time and the third is an omnipresent evil in MMOs.

The main thing I’d ask for at this point is for a few areas with just one hunter or smokescale or pocket raptor group so people could actually get a chance to solo it and learn the mechanics. Can I learn it in groups? Yes, it just takes longer. Can I do it against more than one mob? Absolutely, it just takes longer.

I’ll learn it either way, but having an area to solo a creature would be a nice QoL feature to me.

Tomorrow's PoI: What do you want to know about Pact Commander masteries?

This isn’t related to the Pact Commander Mastery but I’d like a clarification on the Maguuma Masteries.

In the article it lists 4 Maguuma masteries to start with; gliding, Itzel Lore, Exalted Lore and Nuhoch Lore. In almost all previous mentions of the Maguuma Masteries you’ve talked about a Mushroom Jumping Mastery. Is this no longer going to be in release or just accidental omission in the article?

PvE/WvW/PvP players thoughts on cost of WTS?

Yes, I think the 100,000 benefits the game as a whole and therefore is a benefit to non-Pvp players. Anything that attracts new players into the game will be a benefit; every new player means another box sale and potential future gem sales which is more money for Anet to develop with.

Whether or not you think GW2 is a viable Esport is semi-irrelevant. Anet wants it to be and this is part of the cost of business for doing that. Developing GW2 PVP into an Esport is going to be a long, many year road and doing WTS seems to be one of their key points for making it one. The more they can grow PVP as an Esport, the more it benefits everyone.

You should be thinking of the 100,000 as only partially for advertising, but also as investment in the future of the game.

I think it’s our self stated bias that is leading you to say it’s not a good use of the money. As you also stated, you don’t work for Anet and you have no knowledge of their metrics or anything so all you can do is guess. The same applies to everyone else.

Marketing costs vary depending on the customer base you’re trying to reach. It could very well be possible that spending 100,000 on WTS is an effective and efficient use of the money. Given what they’ve stated in the past about their long term PVP goals, I’d guess it’s money well spent.

Authenticator Error

Earlier today I was in a different area of town and decided to check the forums; when I tried looking at the forums I was asked to sign in which also asked for an authenticator code.

I got the code, put it in and the website said there was an error with the data and recheck the form field. Did this 4 times with no luck. I clicked on the forums to read them without logging in and it showed me I was logged in. So, somewhere in there it was validating the log in but the form was reporting an error.

I was using an Android smartphone and Chrome browser.
