Fissure of Woe
Normally for every 500 achievement points (AP) you have earned, you’ll get a chest. The amount of chests you receive is limited to one/day though..
You claim them by opening the chest icon that should appear on your right hand side of your screen.
If you don’t see any: Are you sure you have (at least) 500 AP?
At any level below 80 I would suggest to craft your own armor and weapons:
If you’re a light armour dude, get to a tailor and start tailoring your armor every 5 levels (also gives good experience, crafting).
Medium armor → Leatherworker.
Heavy armor → Armorsmith.
Time to mention my most used build: The LB/SB Berserker Ranger (mostly used in WvW).

Marksmanship: 20
I: Steady Focus (more dmg on full endurance)
VIII: Piercing Arrows
Skirmishing: 25
II: Sharpened Edges (bleed on crit)
X: Quick draw (LB and SB skills recharge quicker)
Wilderness Survival: 25
I: Soften the fall (reduces falling dmg – a must imho in WvW)
IX: Hide in plain sight (on incoming disables: apply stealth – this is a life saver!! )
Weapon
1. Berserker Shortbow with Superior Rune of Bloodlust (more dmg, max 25 stacks)
2. Berserker Longbow with Superior Rune of Earth (inflict bleeding)
Pets
1. Juvenile Krytan Drakehound (melee, knockdown + immobilize + decent dmg)
2. Juvenile Jungle Spider (ranged, immobilize + poison)
Armour + Trinkets
Full berserker armour specced with Rune of the Eagle
(increases precision, critical dmg, + 5% dmg on target lower than 50% health)
Trinkets:
- Ascended offensive berserker with Fine Precision infusion (+ crit chance)
- Ascended defensive berserker with Fine Resilient Infusion (+ thoughness)
Skills
Heal: Troll Unguent
Utility #1: Lightning Reflexes (stun breaker + evade)
Utility #2: Signet of the Hunt (increased movement speed)
Utility #3: Signet of Renewal (cure condition every 10 seconds)
Elite: Entangle
About
This build is mainly used for solo roaming, although you can use it also when tailing with a zerg. Just remember that this is no support build at all, it is a build to put down people quickly before returning to the back of the battle front.
When running, you can always switch the Shortbow with a Greatsword (mine has P/V/T) so you can use #3 for quick runs and #4 to get into a tower under attack..
Concept of the build
Get to a camp as quick as you can, send in your melee pet, cast the Troll Unguent (so that the pet, who is taking aggro, will survive for a bit), put down Entangle, get your longbow and Barrage, get in a line of enemies and start attacking (piercing arrows).
Make sure to switch to your next pet before the melee pet dies (so you don’t get stuck with a 60 second recharge).
When encountering players, bear in mind that you’re a berserker, so make sure that you don’t get hit too much.. With some training, you can easily take out 3 invaders with your full berserker gear (depending of course on the classes of your enemies – QQ @ thieves ;-) )
As mentioned: you can die easily with this build (you’re glass cannon), so adjust your play style to that: Don’t run next to the guards and warriors in the frontline of the battle, but stay ranged. Only run up to an enemy for the killshot, once he’s downed, get back (another player will finish him of – you can always barrage the downed area to keep others from ressing)

Thanks for clarifying.. Well, I don’t think that the 5% increased dmg will make up for the lack of piercing arrows then..
When I autoattack a mob at 1.000 dmg, it will yield only 50 extra dmg.. However, if I had traited into piercing arrows, I could hit more than one mob (meaning 1.000 dmg * x hits)..
Of course, the extra range is handy on the longbow but not required (for my play style, that is)..
I do agree that a pet cannot tank that much dmg, but that’s also the reason why I have a ranged and a melee pet..
If I encounter (WvW) one or two players, the melee pet will do its magic (and since it runs towards the player and doesn’t stand next to me attacking I can easily stealth with LB#3 and keep them clueless as to where I am).
In larger battles, I mostly take out the spider (ranged + immob + poison). If that pet dies, the odds are I’m about to drop dead also (being berserker). :-)
Also (as I’m sure you are aware of, just wanted to mention it again): Switch pet before it dies, gives you a recharge of 20 seconds instead of 60..
Well I meant the damage boost from eagle eye. anyone know how much that is?
If I’m not mistaken (can’t access that much GW related sites at work), eagle eye only ups your precision..
So it will depend on the crit chance you have to start with + the critical damage you have.. 100% crit chance with 0% crit dmg will yield not that much net gain..
It kind of depends for what you use your ranger.. I’m specced 20/30/20/0/0 with full berserker stats and I normally roam solo with my toon, flipping camps and sentries.. And trust me: Piercing Arrows + Entange = Sweet. Hold them all in one place, find the arrow line that pierces most targets, and get to some mayhem.. Also bear in mind that effects also pierce, so interrupting an entire line of enemies, it really is cool to see..
Well, I play WvW quite a lot, but I never noticed this.. -.-

I don’t think that it should act like this, so it seems to be a bug, so best to bug report it and maybe make a thread in the Game Bugs section of the forums..
Once again some great battles yesterday in all the maps (yeah, our guild leader was in his roaming mood, so switching maps at a blink)..
And it’s dearly noted that FoW sucks at mesmer checks.. :-)
Only because, I assume from the rankings that you only have like 10 guys who WvW, and the rest are all PvE scrubs who still like ANet.
I guess you must be one of the 10!

We don’t have that many WvW players (comparing to those other tiers), but we do have fun in WvW nevertheless of course.. Just think of maps without a queue, zergs who can easily be outmanoeuvred, …

I play WvW (on FoW) for quite some months, so I’m well aware of the lack of ANet to do any balancing whatsoever, since all those PvE kitties want to have their monthly carnivals..
well something happens.. I’d say half of the time that I used hunter’s shot last night, it only lasted a fraction of a second.

Could it be that due to condition damage still hanging on an opponent you were destealthed (since doing dmg)?
Well, taste is rather personal.. My first toon was a ranger: using a shortbow/longbow to hit the enemy mob while my pet is taking the aggro, a playstyle I very much like..
On the other hand: I also have an engineer, which is very cool to play with as well: Can be very supportive in a group, has the tools to get out of every situation, …
The only advise I can give you here: Experiment! You have 5 character slots, use them.. :-)
But the trueth is, that you said thief Is a noob class, when thief in smallscale is way harder to play vs skilled players than a ranger ;-). You were looking for it and you got it.

No, the thing I wanted to mention here: A thief has no learning curve. If I should buy GW fresh as a new player and would roll a thief as first toon, I’ll be owning people in no time (and if I don’t, they won’t kill me, since I just stealth/reset).
While any other class has some learning curve (steeper for one class than for another): It takes some time to play your ranger before you’re confident enough to take on those two players you see wandering around (for example)..
If you don’t know what you would like to play, how the hell do you expect someone else to know it for you??
Just answer some simple questions for yourself:
- Do you want to fight in the frontline with your heavy armor, smashing skulls and tanking damage?
- Do you want to be sneaky/stealthy, abusing daggers and pistols?
- Do you want to keep ranged at all time?
- Do you want to go PvE mostly? PvP? WvW?
I think the only person that can answer your questions is you, my friend.. :p

Dont be ridiculous, ranger is the most overpowered 1vX roamer in this game if playing bunker. You simply will not die!
Haha, this cracked me up.. I’d love to see a solo bunker ranger roaming.. All he can do is tickle any enemies he sees (ok, he won’t die, but neither will he be killing). As mentioned, roaming is more than scouting the WvW map for other players to aggro..
That sayed, no roamer requires any skill in this game.

Solo roam in an Omega Golem, its cool you get to shoot rockets out of your @rse. You will go through a lot of golems but they are cheap so what the hell.

I roam with my ranger, and I’m quite sure that goes way better than any thief.. Capping a camp in 1 minute, I’d like to see a solo thief do that..
Also, thief is a noob class, anyone can roll one and start trolling people, no skills needed..

No, seriously, when I kill a Champion, it also doesn’t count for the Veteran Slayer, although it’s harder to kill.. So no idea where the problem is.. :/
For every build you come up, the perfect counter build exists.. So no “pure PvP” class to be found in this game..

(so for instance if the winner leaves before you arrive at the finish, you’ll think you’re first but you will only have 165 points, meaning second)

Heh, you can’t expect that everyone in a country gets along, right? So I’d rather have the zerg broken and some finger pointing then to keep promoting “1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1”.. :-)
That’s assuming people play for WxP though; as far as I can tell they are in the minority (at least on my server).
Never did I say that the other rewards couldn’t be divided either (since indeed, not everyone is farming WxP; lots of upleveleds zerg up to get to 80 quicker, some karmatrainers, …).
So also the karma rewards, monetary reward and experience reward should be divided then..
Stuff like that doesn’t happen only in CoF, there are tons of other situations where all of a sudden the “switch weapon” button is grayed out..
Solution: Switch the weapon with the “Hero Panel”, afterwards the switching works once again like a charm (until the next hiccup).
But agree: annoying like hell, especially in the heat of the battle..

Have WxP divided amonst all players doing the objective (killing a player, taking a camp, …).
For instance: capturing a camp yields 500 WxP
→ take it solo: 500 WxP for you
→ take it with 20 people: 25 WxP for each
There, zerging solved..

Don’t forget that this is a free-to-play game, so they have no responsabilities whatsoever to their users (although of course they want to keep their gem customers happy)..
But nevertheless: You lost some ingame stuff by playing a free-to-play game, and expect some compensation? Srsly?

We specifically said we don’t want to get caught up in the trap where every 3-6 months the game adds another tier of gear to the game; that invalidates all your hard work and the rewards you’ve earned.

I ran together with you earlier that day, true that.. But don’t call me a member of the karma train.. I just hanged with you, since I know you’re a commander with tactics, and I didn’t feel like roaming at that time.. :P
But I resented the remark that “FoW nowadays is nothing more than a karma train”: Not true at all.. You’d be amazed to see how much solo action one can do (although WvW is pro-zerg).. :P

Jonva, it might be best to check the Wiki of Guild Wars to get some feel about the professions.. Also Youtube can be handy, lots of players regulary upload videos of their toons, so that can give you also a nice feel about which professions suits you best..
Every class have ranged weapons, and I wouldn’t advise you ranger cause even mesmer or warriors perform better at ranged combat imo
People seem to forget that a ranger is more than an arrow shooting entity, it has also a pet (which mitigates lots of dmg/aggro). And for a new player that’s very handy imho..
I don’t really like fighting with swords like that, i like from long distance… ^^
Well, all professions can wear ranged weapons of course.. But since you’ll be at long distance, you will not be soaking up heavy damage, so then I would suggest a ranger (it has a pet, which will take aggro away from you nicely – still medium armor) or ele/mesmer (can do more dmg, but you’ll need to be kiting way more, since light armor).
Indeed, a warrior might suit you, or even guardian, since they have a really easy playthrough in PvE..
But the question you’d have to ask yourself: What kind of character do you want? Do you want a frontliner with heavy armor that gets tickled by greatsword attacks? Or a sneaky character that’ll stealth and backstab your target? Or a massive elemental nuker? …….
Have the same problem.. Ctrl is my Elite, so I randomly entangle when setting up auto-attack.. Oh, and since Alt is my heal, I heal from time to time when checking the net (Alt-Tab
).
Unfortunately nothing can be done about this.. Since I tend to use Alt also to show commander markers on the map, it’s a heal wasted from time to time.. But I cba with the default assigns..

Want to thank WSR for the nice fights we had yesterday afternoon in their BL while we were capturing they bay keep.. Nice pushes forward and back, from the keep to the tower and back to the keep..
However, it came to my attention that the amount of upleveled amongst WSR drastically dropped.. Not enough XP for your alts? :P

This does not replace /map communication… unless this was something all commanders did at all times.
Agree, it does not replace it.. But as mentioned in the topic here: those events in Queensdale trigger like crazy, and I also kind of hate it seeing in my map constantly “xxx up! – WP link”.
I normally only use map communication to give pointers to players (talking PvE) or if I encounter a group event I can’t do alone (so not the case for the Queensdale’s).
