Commander – Jam Death [Jd]
Fissure of Woe
I can totally recommend T8. I am on Fissure of Woe and I usually completely avoid zergs (due to me lagging since the last patch). If you look for a bit of a challenge you go to EB or currently Blacktides borderland. If you want some easier roaming you go to Vabbi (worst Server) or the homeland. No matter what you can always avoid Blacktides zergs.
Hmmz, you do know that we are T9, right?
Also, Vabbi is making some decent impressions as of letely (due to zergballing of course), so wouldn’t think that their borderlands is such a nice roaming area..
Eternal Battlegrounds however is.. I spend quite some time there flipping camps and sents and getting myself into 1v1 or 1v2 fights..
Like most have said: its a operator error type of issue.
Ranger can be the most underpowered and boring class ever when played wrong. Ranger can also be straight up dominant 1v1 when played right.
^^ Hitting the nail!
About rangers….maybe 95% of the rangers are lazy but I almost never found good challanges against rangers. I’ve met rarely some good traps/condition build rangers, the rest of them just use a bow-autoattack-ranger-build that works it this way:
1- shoots arrows
2- shoots more arrows
3- sends the annoying pet that can follows u miles away from its owner
I actually find rangers a good way to test ur build, if u have trouble soloing a ranger then ur build is not good.
Don’t judge all rangers because of the noobie ones you encounter please.. I could say the same from every other class in the game: Thieves go down so easily, and all they can do is cloak and dagger, blablablablabla..
I would be glad to show you some tactics involving more than just hitting 1.. And yeah, I’m LB/SB, so I will be shooting arrows.. Point is, some will poison, others will cripple, others knockback, …
And my pet? I don’t want it to follow you for miles.. So when you decide to run away from me, you’ll be safe, no worries..
Don’t get me wrong, i’ve nothing against rangers. They’re good in pve but in wvw if u’re not shooting from a safe tower it’s better working on a different build than the usual bow-build
Hmmz, you have nothing against rangers but just decide to turn down the entire class, looking at it as though they all are unskilled zombies hitting 1?
Roamers need to be able to walk around a corner, see 50 rednames coming and be able to get away. Thieves are #1 at this by a long shot. A ranger can chase a ranger but even a thief can’t catch a thief.
As a ranger, get your GS out, hit #3 and fly away.. And should you notice they do are catching up on you: WP
But agree: to tackle this specific issue (when encountering a zerg heading your way), stealth is the “tactic” to use..
But roaming is more than just wandering around in WvW awaiting to encounter a zerg, no? Flip some camps and sentries, for starters.. Or doesn’t that happen above T8? :o
Honestly though my absolute favorite thing in this game is when a thief goes into stealth and you pop wolfs fear just at the right time and the thief reappears doing the funny walk in the opposite direction.
Haha, awesome..
This made me laugh out loud, and since I’m at work, my colleagues didn’t get it..
- is worthless to me because anyone decent will dodge out(and its not a lot of dmg to begin with" and its a channel skill. This means you cannot move during the animation, which opens you up to easy back stabs.
Is also the reason why I’d do that one only when the thief (in this case) goes into stealth. If he stealths by heal, I’ll pop the barrage on my own head. Should he try to come backstab me, he’ll be crippled and have taken some dmg. More importantly, the LB#4 will push him once again to some distance..
If he stealths by Shadow Refuge, I’ll pop the barrage over there.. If he dodges out, his stealth breaks..
And then of course I’ll break off the barrage..
The amount of evades, escapes, passive health regen and cond wipes make us a scary opponent when played right.
Couldn’t agree more there..
I’ll just throw this out there: Nine times out of ten I don’t even need to pop my heal vs LB/SB power build rangers.
Oh, I do.. I never want to see my doggy pet die..
And have to admit: I haven’t encountered that many LB/SB rangers while roaming.. Maybe the WvW rank has something to do with it..
What I’ve mostly learned from this thread is people do not understand how to play ranger.
No escapes? Lightning reflexes? GS#3? 1hs#2? Shared anguish/hide in plain sight?
Its absolutely amazing to me anyone who has played ranger extensively say they aren’t good 1v1. I excell in small skirmishes and 1v1 its extremely rare I get put down.
Learn how to play the class before you put it down. At least two different thieves I dueled yesterday were asking about my build because they’ve never seen ranger played that way.
I won’t delve into specifics here but PM me if you want any info. I’m full bunker with canines running only melee weapons for small group play, its stupid hard to hit me.
Finally the class gets the attention it deserves.. I’m a pure ranger (don’t have that many other characters at lvl 80 even) and roam a lot in WvW..
I always have a shortbow equipped, but when not in combat, I use warhorn (speed buff), quickly switching to greatsword (GS#3 = speedy). And should I then get into unexpected combat, I have at least my GS and SB..
When entering expected combat, the secondary weapon is the LB. Why? It works perfectly against those stealthy types we encounter nowadays. When a thief goes in stealth, just barrage his shadow refuge or barrage around you (so he won’t come to backstab you that easily). LB#4 is awesome to keep melee at range, and then switching back to SB you can bleed, cripple, poison, evade and gain swiftness, confuse/interrupt..Needless to say I’m a Power/Precision/Cond dmg build? And I don’t get downed that often in 1v1 (or 1v2). Of course, much depends on the skills of the opponent, undoubtful..
Also, capping camps is done in 2 minutes at most. Especially important when roaming, you don’t want to show those crosses around the camp icon for too long, hence reinforcements might arrive and bring you down..
Yeah, I love my ranger..

When I down some, I almost always take the liberty of bowing towards my dead enemy, as a sign of respect..
Use escapeskills and disengage. Nothing to do there.
Disengage and send a pet/some minions to keep the mezzy busy.. Once confusion is over, head to your pet/minions and do some mayhem..
Your tier sounds interesting…
It IS interesting.. Ok, it’s merely T9, but don’t let that and the point count fool you though: We have some skilled players in our ranks.. Just a pity that our numbers are not as high as the zergballers’..
Also, something I see more and more in WvW nowadays: People just play WvW for their own glory (get that rank up, earn karma) and not for the reputation and honour of the server they’re on.. I have the impression that in the beginning of WvW this was quite different.. Could be just a feeling though..
Well, the zergballs that we see these days are plain karma trains actually.. So were those hitting on AB yesterday in our borders.. Once the outer gate was breached, you could see the confusion in their ranks as to which inner gate to take on.. Also, filled with upleveled players and no commander in their ranks (at least not that I could see).
The encounter I had in EB with a small group (of which one was a commander), there you could actually see some nice tactics.. 4 players hitting on a camp I just took, so I remained and downed them quite some times..
Until I was so focused on those 4 always reappearing that I didn’t see the 10 BT coming from the other side..
I lol’d and applauded.. That’s tactics
So any class exploiting stealth is OP in this game.
Meh, stealth gives the player a false feeling of security.. When I see a thief popping shadow refuge, all I need to do is switch to Longbow and barrage the spot.. OR he will have to come out, OR he will remain in and take some hard dmg.. If he decides to come out, switch to SB (if possible already) or hit LB#4 to push him back from you (so he’ll need to heartseek his way back to you).
Same goes for the rezzing: When you wanna try to res a player downed by a thief, put some AoE at the spot of the downed player and start rezzing.. The thief/mesmer won’t be that stupid to head in and take insanely dmg just to stomp one down..
However, I do agree that there should be a counter to stealth, one way or another.. A pet ability, an elite of some sorts, … For instance: A Charr, quite a beastly animal, can’t it just sniff where the stinking stealthy thief is anytime?
Yeah, WvW was great fun once again yesterday evening.. Just so unfortunate the the BT zergball kept rolling on our borderlands for quite some time.. Oh well, they yielded some nice kills while defending Ascension Bastion, and we also managed to push them back twice from the lord’s room..
ANet should really think of something to discourage zerging.
Or if they like ZvZ so much, make a mini-arena in the WvW maps where zergs can go full out on each other (30-40 players minimum required in both teams, maximum of 40-50).
Oh, and found the other topic started about this matchup:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/4-5-13-BT-FoW-Vab/first#post1790490
:)
Wut? since when?
Did this get ninja’d in with some patch or was I just unaware of that fact the whole time?
I’m afraid that the latter is applicable..
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/WvW-team-colours
You mean blue armor?
You can adjust that in your settings so that you see the true armor of the invaders instead of the generic colour that server has at that time..
Well, if you ever see a female Charr P/P thief waving and bowing at you, that’s me
Haha, awesome.. And when you’re doing that to a blonde female ranger wearing complete white armour, then that’d be me..
When thief goes in stealth, I most of the time just pop my LB#5 and stand in the middle of it..
Is a tactic, proven efficient..
Well, on FoW we have some WvW-guilds (Draco being member in Avenges of Woe, like me), so when we really band together we can zerg up to 20-30 with our guild.. Add some other guilds that have fun in WvW (PVP, Dark, …) and you can get to some nice numbers.. But since most of us hate zerging, we seldom zerg ourselves..
Hehe, I also have already a tendency to leave Vabbi alone.. I’d take their attention (jump, wave), and when they stop I’d bow.. Most of the times I get a bow/wave back, and I carry on what I was doing, while Vabbi does the same.. Makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside..
Heh, I created a topic about our matchup earlier this week, but couldn’t find it back either.. :/
Agree with Desova, the BT zergball is just kittening us all.. We should make a truce of some sorts: Vabbi stays away from FoW, FoW will stay away from Vabbi, and both of us will hit on BT (Vabbi east side, FoW westside – so we can have some nice battles between us in capturing the garrison and the center camps)
If Thief is so easy, why does it not dominate the leaderboards?
Probably because when in stealth you aren’t capping anything..
Well ok, valid point, but look at the makeup of the teams competing in tournaments.
Are they overrun with thieves? Not at all, they are still a minority. If they were so OP, other classes wouldn’t be capping anything because they’d be dead right?
Do remember that this forum is about WvW, and not PvP.. Stealth in WvW is a real pain in the kitten..
You roam around solo, checking your surroundings constantly.. While all of a sudden you get hit from something with 5k dmg and it disappears again..
Also, as was mentioned: In PvP the ranks are dominated by Guardians (heavy armor + healing) and Ele (bunker builds?), so they can outlast a simple thief..
If Thief is so easy, why does it not dominate the leaderboards?
Probably because when in stealth you aren’t capping anything..
OK. Ranger. Totaly unblanced, loses to all others professions easy in WWW, where you dont supose to have a PvP build, dont’t know the staus in PvP, but I guess I will not find many rangers competing.
To the people taht say the others run from them in WWW I use to say “Roll a ranger like me, and no one will run from you”.
Do you know why GW2 don’t still have GvG? Because professions arn’t blanced, rangers at the top of the disgrace.
Oh my.. No idea if you’re kidding here or are really absolutely talking kitten.. :p
I play Ranger as my main, and never had any issues with any opponent.. Ok, some will kill me (all classes), but I’ll also kill (also, all classes).
So, the fact that people don’t run from you, might be in how skillful you use your skills.. From the statement you made, I guess not at all..
And yet another “ANet, remove the AoE limit” thread.. :/
Why do people think commander tag is always the cause for a zerg?? It’s handy for new players on the map to get an overall view of where they should be heading, but the odds are that the commander has given some commands earlier on map chat to the people there (get to there, upgrade, other group roam and flip camps, …).
I hate this kittening on the commander tag (I worked very hard to get it, you know)..
Pure WvW players are also forced to do PvE in order to get their world completion..
And I do believe that you can do your daily perfectly without entering WvW, or am I mistaken here?
Interesting idea, but this is exactly what organised WvW guilds do and stand for.
The only time I pop my badge is in emergencies, unorganised zergs of random people without any form of communication are walking lootbags.. not here to blow your idea, just saying all of that is already there..
True this.. ^^
I solo, but the point system (and the more I understand about it) truly frustrates me.
Agree there.. But I’m sure ANet knows also that this kittens up the WvW scene a lot and will try to find bandaids for this.. Otherwise, the Wxp- and VictoryPoints-farming zergs will remain..
I’m overgeneralizing but most zerg players are like that. I’ve gone into zergs recently and kept asking myself: What am I learning from this?
From times to times I like rolling with the zergball, since you learn to use your skills when your screen is filled with effects and your FPS is reduced drastically..
Also, when zerg meets zerg, you learn to keep an overview in all the mayhem (not just pressing tab and hitting 1, but more like: Hey, that’s their commander, let’s lure him back or kill the mofo).
That being said: I love solo more than zerg play though
For those fellow roamer soloers in a world of zerg: I salute you.
Keep capturing camps and causing mayhem behind enemy lines.
At your service!
I’ve always wondered. what do you find fun about it? it seems ridiculously uneventful and dull to me.
I enjoy WvW, since you’re doing something for the greater good (the good name of the server you’re on). I mostly roam around solo capturing camps and sentries, but at times I roll up with the zergball and flow around the map, capturing towers and keeps..
Uneventful? Strange remark, I completed my “Emergency Response Hero” achievement mostly by all the events that occur in WvW. Dull? Nothing dull about using your skills to get a camp captured as quickly as possible (before the defending server gets there with some people to check out the crosses on their map).. And of course the combat from time to time (going from mass action rushes on Stonemist castle to simple 1v1, when you encounter another roamer).
Played with my main the entire PvE story, started WvW quite late (at level 70), but haven’t been away from WvW ever since..
How about a tonic that instantly gives you map completion and rank 500 in WvW?
Nah, do some effort, it’s perfectly feasable.. I’m in FoW and have my map completion as well (without transferring over and back to another server)..
What the hell are you all complaining about? Perma-stealth, so the only class that can remain hidden from sight for the remainder of the day, still quite OP in my humble (ranger) opinion..
I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick, I was in Blacktide Borderland since EB was full when we tried to join in. This isn’t mostly directed at last night, but theres been plenty of times where our entire force has been in EB and refused to come back and defend upgraded towers and Keeps in FoW over the last 2 weeks.
Agree there, at times people get carried away too much in EB and don’t notice the own borderlands are overrun.. Also hate to see when some commander lures all to EB right after recapping our own border.. Upgrades first, but apparently not all (want to) know that..
No, this was when everyone was defending a single tower in EB whilst we lost 2 Keeps in our BL. I know and accept we don’t have a night crew, thats not the issue here, its the inability to prioritise.
True this..
That was actually meant to be a joke in regards to the US Tier 8 threads that pop up all the time.
Oh yeah..
Makes me think, indeed.. Time to start 20+ threads about our T9 issues.. ANet, FIX US!!
I haven’t seen zerging this bad in months. All we seem to be doing is taking stuff and then abandoning it.
Hmmz, we tend to defend what we have capped actually.. Place some AC’s and have people check out from time to time.. Also, did you not read the part where I mentioned that while the fight at SM was ongoing the borderlands of BT were capped?
After the fight you are all going on about yesterday, there were only about 10 of us defending our own Borderlands, which is hilarious considering EB and BT Borderland had queues on 20 mins before hand.
Some people do have to work in the morning, so you can’t expect us to be online 24/7 doing our WvW magic..
All 3 servers have been doing the same thing since the patch, so were all going to be stuck down here for a long time (Note: we all deserve to be down here, don’t go inflating our ratings).
It’s not because we are T9 that we s*ck monkeyballs.. We do have some skills, OK, not to be compared to T1 of course, but nevertheless.. The problem of not having that many active WvW players is what’s messing us up.. Who from FoW was playing this night between midnight and 8am in WvW?
Starting to regret not transferring off now.
kthxbye
Yes, you can level in WvW.. Your level is automatically upped to 80 when you enter WvW, but your native level will be the one you entered with.. So you’ll have more hp and such.. However, your armor will not be lvl 80, so prepare to be downed quite a bit..
Usefullness depends on what is needed in the group of course.. You can take a more supportive role (AoE heals and stuff) or you can be the heavy hitter of the group. Or something more in between.. Whatever floats your boat..
But I would strongly recommend to do some PvE first, since you’ll need to get a good feeling about your skills and how to utilize them..
Wouldn’t it be cool if the orbs would yield points, but give a negative buff? So the winning server would want them (for the points), but this makes them more vulnerable to the “lesser” servers..
Just an idea..
Ok, it’s T9, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have any fun in our WvW experience, on the contrary.. And since there was no topic yet for our matchup: here it goes..
Would like to thank Blacktide for the nice battle we had yesterday evening at Stonemist Castle. We managed to rush with some guilds our part of EB, took SM, but were confronted by the BT zerg when we dared to approach their keep..
Fell back to SM, where the battle intensified. Took them almost an hour to recapture SM (thanks for the nice kills there, my Tier in WvW invaders killed went up), but of course they succeeded at the end..
Nevertheless, we (FoW) were able to capture almost their entire borderlands while they were hitting on SM, so we managed to take the lead for some time..
See you at our next push!
Is anyone here aware then EU tier 9 has it much worse and dont complain. Since launch Vabbi and FoW have made 1 thread as far as i know complaining about how uneven it is and have never left that tier since falling there.
So on that note…. Dear Anet pls fix EU tier 9!
I like T9, it’s nice and comfy there.. :-)
Mainly caused because of our sheer numbers.. During the daytime the bigger (not better, but bigger) server just caps almost everything, we at FoW become active in the evening (with guilds like WvW, AKP, …).
Might I mention that yesterday evening we had almost the entire borderlands of Blacktide (the greens) capped? Since they were too busy zergballing on our borderlands of course.. :p
Main tactic when outnumbered: divide and conquer. And no reason yet to get into a higher tier, we’ll get T1 once we’re ready for it..
Sorry for coming from 1month of T9 where you only fight doors…
I am in T9 and I found this comment amusing at least..
You guys have some fun in T8 I’d say, and of course, when we see one of you back in T9, you’ll be warmly welcomed back..
I think it would be cool if Commander tag color changed depending on your rank
Having 100g and participate in every zerg possible for some nice rank farming will not necessarily make you a commander people should listen to..
The great thing about playing on a low/medium populated server is that most of the good commanders in WvW you know after a while..
Also, I read somewhere on these forums (and I agree totally) that a true commander does not need a tag.. Give advice, direct people towards locations, anyone with access to map chat can do that..
The good ones will keep their tag off because they don’t want to further confuse pugs, but the bad ones will not care and keep theirs on all of the time.
Ah.. I feel so warm inside now.. :-) Main reason I don’t wear the tag is indeed to not lure every single player that spawns to me.. I only put it on to provide a marker to people so they know (for instance) which entrance of the garrison we’re hitting, or where exactly the breach in the wall is.. Once I see enough players, the tag goes off..
And yeah, I was called names earlier this week since I mapchatted to a commander why he had his tag on when doing the JP in our borderlands.. Answer “So the guild can see me” quite didn’t do it for me.. Oh well, he was quickly gone, since other experienced players started complaining as well..
It has been said that groups have killed them, but someone or a few people would die in the process…..
Heh, teach me how to kill invulnerable mobs please.. :/
No idea why one would ever want to start a fight with a legendary defender? They are invulnerable, so no use.. And they insta-kill you.. Noticed that when chasing good old WSR back to their spawn..
Guessing you haven’t done the secret rooms and bee dog in zone 1.
Bee dog and its honeycomb are not required for the Bauble achievement..
I like the idea of this, to be honest.. I myself roam alot, and indeed: Capping a camp takes me 2 minutes, but yields the same Wxp should I have done it with a massive zerg behind me (capping it in seconds). And isn’t the point in experience points normally that you gain more when the challenge is bigger?
And the remark: if you want to roam solo, play PvP? Dude, there is a lot more in WvW with roaming around on your own then just finding an opponent and killing it.
I prefer the stealthy approach (I’m no thief, btw): Cap a camp, head over to other side of the map and cap a camp there, WP back and cap another camp. Keeps the defending zerg quite busy recapping and speculating where you’ll be hitting next. The only times I kill opponents is when they start interfering while I’m capturing something.. For the rest I like to avoid battle as much as possible (keep them in the dark about that “group” capping their points).
I hate sPvP, but love solo WvW..
Finally got mine as well yesterday evening.. The hardest part was the Bauble Achievement in Zone 3.. kitten took me 3 hours to get them all..
Ranger is the best roamer
Completely agree there.. Nice DPS (through conditions) and quite some evades, whilst getting away easy from a zerg ball..
I <3 my ranger
I have all hints marked but my achievement 81/83 and it isn’t completed
Same here..
Find it quite odd, since ANet is talking about player rankings (including achievements), but there are still achievements bugged.. :/
Ranger, solo roaming and capping camps/sentries:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ty7MP6M5_9c
I heard that several people had solo’d low-level fractals… So I decided to try and solo through a fractal as a ranger. 0/0/25/25/20. The ending is kind of sad.
The ending is sad? I lolled so hard.. Awesome.. :-)
