i really miss the option to develop “archenemies” in this game. Thats allways been one of my longtime motivations in openworld pvp, killing the guy that has killed me so often before is just much more fun and reward than killing 100 faceless enemies.

So after loooooong time, I run GW2 again. Log in with my 80 thief. First thing I saw were awesome dragon armors and some funny ethereal wings.

And this shouldn’t be true.. There is no such thing as the better class (normally). In an honest game, the outcome of a battle would depende solely on the player skills..
I’ve never understood why perma-stealth was that big of an issue… if they are just staying in stealth then they aren’t really doing anything… the only thing I can think of is C&D off of something to contest… which is a bug they need to fix (and tried to fix in the past, but it didn’t work)

In this vid one thief is perma-AoE-stealthing, so you have no idea how many (if any) players are with him. And all it takes is one mesmer to portal bomb..

Happened all the time. I got ganked or they reset the fight. I didn’t QQ because I understood that each class excels in a certain situation. I’m not sure what you are asking.
So never ever at that time did you think “kitten , this is really kittened up – He can keep swinging at me all he wants, I’ll never get the hit on him”?
Also, it’s the only class that can try that.. If a guardian tries to kill you and doesn’t succeed, you can be quite sure there’ll be a loot bag at your feet..
Once again: the problem is not with the thieves mechanics. I understand stealth is an essential part of the class (like e.g. a pet is to a ranger). But if I should find a combo with my pet that would give me a huge advantage over another player (perma-stealth, invulnerable, …), then you can be sure that a pet nerf is imminent..
However, perma-stealth by thieves is still allowed by ANet (and this is game breaking, sorry).. And that’s what the thread is all about: There is no hard counter to stealth and perma-stealth is possible..
Any build that can dodge or CC the Thief into the Revealed debuff, then burst him to death before it wears off.
Please elaborate: I’m a thief, I’m stealthed.. You will do what now? CC me (without knowing where I am)? Ok, I’ll be CC’d (but have tons of utilities to break out of it, remaining in stealth)..
(I know you can pull thieves out of their Shadow Refuge circle of course, but what to do once the stealth is applied?)

Isn’t actually countered in that way.. It’s just a way to deal with it.. I could have said “Just don’t do anything” as a counter to Confusion also.. Isn’t a counter, just a way to deal with it..
Obviously the server you join (like an overflow) is not in the same matchup as your home server.
Nicely added there.. However, I still think my statement stands: When a player wants to go to WvW, he wants to aid his home world. If he is pushed to another (not in his tier) world, he wouldn’t be that motivated to do anything good (since all he’s doing isn’t for his home world).

I don’t QQ about other class abilities. Hence my reference to Confusion and Retaliation, both of which were strong counters to Thief. Same with the pre-nerf Regen Bunker Ranger build, which I had a very hard time fighting against. I did not demand anything be done about these.
Condition removal -> Confusion countered
Regeneration -> Retalation countered
? -> Stealth countered
See the point?
I have all 8 classes at 80, like many people do. About 50% of leveling was done in WvW, for all classes.
So is my assumption correct that during all those months in WvW with those chars you were never bugged by a thief that tried to kill you, didn’t succeed, and then just stealthed away?
As mentioned: I have no problems losing a battle against a thief, if that thief is a good player.. Unfortunately, even a brain dead monkey with no arms can main a thief and mess around..
(I do know there are some very good thieves around there, no offence meant to those players)
@Tribio – Did you mean, respect or lack thereof on our parts? If you have an example where I have spoke out of turn, I’d be glad to make it clearer as I have no issues with our server population at all.
Talking about how Vabbi & Blacktide joining forces doesn’t really prove that having it as a 3way battle doesn’t work for us?
Hey Mantis, before those words of mine start to live their own life, I meant here that it seems to me [Jd] just didn’t bother about the impact of their actions.. Never ever did [Jd] spoke out of turn or showed disrespect to FoW (maybe my words were not chosen correctly).
Actually having 2 different sets of enemies on the map is exactly what i want. From my point of view; it’s not about “kitten Vabbi in their BL” – it’s about what is the easiest to capture and hold at any given point to cumulatively give us the best points per tick.
Aye, pure WvW is indeed like this.. But it’s clear that in WvW there is more at play than “taking out the smallest competitor”. We know that Blacktide has to start messing in EB and FoW/Vabbi BL to get their points up. So it speaks for itself that Vabbi and FoW should defend themselves against this big Goliath server. Starting some internal wars between the two David’s will only yield in Goliath’s victory, for sure..
Like it or not, Vabbi and FoW are teamed together due to their underdog position. And in a real war the underdogs will unite to fight against the bigger enemy..

1) ANet creates the only hard-counter to a class mechanic in game.
2) People don’t use this hard-counter and continue to QQ.Pretty much the WvW population in a nutshell. RIP Confusion and Retaliation.
Oh, so you find it normal that the only counter we have against stealth requires the investment of karma and badges? How would you QQ if you’d have to remove the bleeding from a ranger with a “anti ranger bleed” tissue you’d have to buy at a karma vendor?
Seriously, you love your thief, that’s clear.. But try to see why people are so much complaining about them.. And if you can’t: Roll any other class and go roam a bit in WvW..
As mentioned before: People are not QQing since they lost against a thief, people are QQing because ANet simply cba to do anything about the (abuse of) the stealth mechanic..

Part of the class design that they can choose their battles and leave if they don’t like where it’s going. Personally… most of the time I do get the loot bag off of them though… because I’ve plaid a thief and know what most of these WvW players will do in a typical situation…
Agree.. But that’s somehow broken actually: Whatever a thief attempts (if he has half a brain and one arm), he has no risk whatsoever of a negative outcome. In the worst case scenario he’ll have to stealth out and reset (or give up the fight), but never ever will he have to fear for his life..
Before I’d do the same with my ranger (my main, so quite skilled with it), I’ll have to check who my opponent(s) is/are and if I can even succeed in getting him/them. If not, move on.. But a thief? Just try it nevertheless.. If all goes wrong, stealth out and carry on..
I agree also on the fact that, if you encounter a class where you have issues with, to roll one (I have all 8 classes) to check their skills and how to counter. And that’s a bit kitten with the thief’s stealth: Nothing to be done to counter it (and don’t mention stealth traps, or I’ll have you eat them)
So I think that what people annoys the most is that this is the only class that can easily break off a fight without any consequences..
It is also outside the spirit of WvWvW (see 3 teams all versus each other). It’s fundamentally detrimental to FoW’s rating as it ‘stops’ access to a 1/3 of the map. An easier 3rd to take I might add. If the ‘alliance’ allowed you to hold your BL all week it would only erode our rating, because of previous scores.
Yeah, we noticed that this weekend.. That easier 3rd was taken, and before we knew it all was lost in EB and our BL, since Vabbi and BT joined forces.. Nice thinking there..
I do have the most of respect for [Jd] (even having done some PvP this weekend with them), but I’m a bit shocked to see how much respect (some of) [Jd] seem to have for its own server population?

TL;DR: If you don’t bother about the “alliance” and you wanna kitten Vabbi in their BL, make sure you have the numbers present to defend when they start aggro’ing us. I can only applaud Vabbi’s reactions, tbh..
People just QQ about losing 1v1 and feel the need to make threads about it. Surprise, no class (or player) is good at everything.

The thing is: Skillwise there is nothing wrong with a thief. If I encounter a good thief, I’ll get owned. Simple as that.
However, if I encounter a noob thief, I will not get owned, but neither will I get the kill on him, since a thief can always break out of combat, go stealth and reset the fight..
(please note: if I encounter a bad thief, I’ll win. But that’ll work with any class of course..)
Having said that im kind of unsure why everyone doesnt just roll 1 lol.
Am I the only one that noticed that the amount of thieves has increased quite a lot in WvW?
As you mention: So many people complain about the profession, they see nothing being done about it, so instead of being frustrated they start griefing others instead, thus spreading the thief love..
Perhaps to make things a little easier, the following.
If you are trying to enter a map but that map has a queue you can “wait” out the queue by joining another server entirely. Atleast untill your queue is ready.
You can be put in a map for a server that his horribly underpopulated. As a result high populated servers where people have long queue’s will be able to atleast play WvW while they wait for their own maps. And while playing, they will actively assist servers that are getting steamrolled/brutally outmanned. Obviously the server you join (like an overflow) is not in the same matchup as your home server.
I dont know if such a system can be made, or if it would work properly within the gamecode of GW2 and the server setup. But if it can be done it sounds like a win-win to me.
Hmmz, what would stop me (when I’m queued for EB so I join another server) to just troll that server then? I’m true at heart to my home server, so meaning I get pushed to another one because there is a queue, just means I get the opportunity to scout this server, abuse siege deployment, …

My question to FoW and vabbi: last week against RoF and this week against Blacktide, who has lower population? FoW got already more points that they had for whole week against RoF.
It feels like Blacktide has indeed less population than RoF. They normally zergball in one map (20-30), while they leave their other maps little populated (3-5 players). So it’s easier for us (FoW/Vabbi) to lure their zerg away from their active map by just capturing stuff on another map (BT zerg in EB? Get some camps flipped in BT BL, and their zerg will come back). So all we have to do is avoid their zergball, and we should be allright..
With RoF this was another issue: Their main zerg (30-40) was active on one map, while in the other maps they would still have 10-20 players roaming around, taking out any roamers from our servers..
I’m sure many feel the same on both side, but there is guilds that wont listen. It’s a nice idea but wont be doable ever again aslong as fow guilds attack our borderlands.
Completely agree here.. It’s a shame that the power trip of some FoW guilds made this alliance “wonky”..
Oh well, let’s see how it progresses of course.. I do hope that in time the alliance settles and we can work again together as a nice underdog team to show our mutual enemy some respect for T9..

The leash distance is 2k, that means its 500 further than your traited longbow, In other words its been buffed, you can actually send your pet FURTHER than before by using F1, on the downside your pet will no longer chase your target to the ends of the earth.
It can be my impression, but I also agree with OP here: When I normally could have my dog chase a dolly while I would be capping the camp in the meantime, it now comes back to me way quicker, without chasing the dolly..
tl;dr: Creating a slippery, high mobility, roflwtfbbq damage class with access to perma stealth in a game that has no counterplay to stealth. Excellent work GW2 Game Designers, thumps up.

Indeed, this is something that is out of the hands of ANet, and yet people always point their fingers to ANet for not fixing this matchups..
Some “solutions” have been proposed in endless other threads, but they would either a) punish the high popped server or b) buff the low popped server, so always some people to complain..
On a sidenote: One thing I know is that people on a low popped server are most of the times darn good WvW players, since they’re used to running/roaming while Outmanned (and yet they keep doing it, no matter what).
Vabbi and FoW have been the “dead zone” since launch (look at the mos history), you can’t fix that. They are just empty for WvW.
Emtpy? I see.. I would gladly invite you to some WvW roaming, so you’ll see how empty we are.. Some respect should be in order here, mister..
The only fix would be to put them in a tier of their own vs. a computer… and they’d still lose. (Also why this thread is flawed, you’re using the ultimate extreme to try and make a point.)
Of course, since we are T9 and we are all full kittens in your eyes? kitten , what I’d give to show you some FoW love in 1v1..
Maybe merge a single server to give even numbers, and then let Vabbi and FoW have their special “empty” tier.

I am quite stumped here. Unfortunately I am on Kaineng where we do not even own 25% of our ON Borderlands, it is going to be impossible to get 100% Map completion on this server and I find it ridiculous that the solution to this is to pay and switch servers. Anyone else dealt with this problem?
I’m from FoW (T9, getting owned each matchup due to lesser numbers) and I had my map completion without transferring..
All it takes is some preparation and communication with a guild and you can easily rush a tower anywhere for the necessary POI’s.. Of course, the more people you can find that need that specific POI, Vista, …, the merrier (and the easier it’ll be to get).
Also, you could try (if you have some good contacts with the enemy world) to get some kind of “truce”: They will allow you to take that specific tower for your POI, if only you abandon it afterwards so they can recap..
Indeed, it came to my attention that the relation between Vabbi and FoW has cooled intensively..
I was able to get pass some Vabbi in EB (while they were rushing the keep in their valley), so nothing was wrong at that point. But then all of a sudden some kitten guild(s) from FoW start to hit on Vabbi BL?
So the reaction of Vabbi is very understandable, and the counterreactions to it also.. But the trigger here are those kitten guilds from FoW that dared aggro’ing Vabbi..
Nevertheless, I’m still one of the few who honours the old alliance: I will never ever strike at Vabbi BL, unless they are starting to rush ours.. May we meet in EB for some nice battles!
(for the third server in our underdog tier: have fun, be gentle and show some respect to the lesser populated servers – know that the few you see in WvW are there by choice, so they want to make a difference to their world, no matter how small)

You detest kiting? Delete your ranger and roll guardian..
No, seriously, we are a medium armor class, so there is no way that we can take the same amount of hits than a heavy armor class. However, we are superior ranged (recent Longbow buff), so that’s the play style lots of rangers will take on: Use a ranged weapon as main and for the second set they would a) take another ranged, b) take some heavy melee or c) get some supportive setup.
I mainly use my ranger to roam in WvW, on a sidenote..
Condition damage numbers should still be visible on a stealthed thief imho.
Why? If I encounter a ninja at home and I smack him hard before he stealths, I just have to follow the trace of blood..

Have seen so many postst about the broken thief and such (and normally I just cackle and carry on).. However, it was my curiosity that made me roll a thief, pure for PvP. My opinion about the class: Even a brain dead monkey with no arms can play it.
Seriously (I know there are some very good thieves around, no worries), some looking at my skills, some traiting, and I was able to become top player in kills without any skill involved..
If I should roll me a ranger (my main is one) and head to PvP, it would take some days/weeks even to get familiar with the profession and become a top player.
TL;DR: Thief’s mechanics aren’t broken, but it’s learning curve is absent, thus being the ideal profession for n00b players: “I play one hour a week and I own everything on the map”
Don’t shoot me please, just my opinion..
(and should you shoot me, don’t do it from stealth :p )

Hmmz, my ranger is being rebuilt to a pure zerker ranger, and still wearing the commander tag from time to time.. :p Ok, I will not be front-lining (I have guildies for that)..
But indeed, when you actually plan on being in the front line (with all the guardians and warrs), I’d go for some more thoughness/vitality.. A commander that needs to be rezzed every few seconds will lose credibility..
I’m amazed to see the amount of detail in this very interesting topic..

Seriously: Instead of removing these two servers, split up another one and add it to our WvW tier (so we have a nice tier with low-medium popped servers).

Indeed, the code needs to be optimalised some more (as you mention, use the JQuery functionality a bit more). Also I have to investigate some caching of the JSON-data, so that I don’t have to make constant API calls over Inet.. Work in progress, of course..
Ultimate plan is to get an overview like gw2thelazy for only my server (Fissure of Woe) where I can easily see the quest progress for the world bosses and our overall standing in WvW..

After reading a bit through the API documentation the urge to start programming reappeared on my side.. So I did some work today and yesterday and thought it’d be handy to share my code with you guys?
I believe very new API programmers might find it handy for reference, and I hope that advanced API experts might correct me or provide me with some nice comments..

Keep in mind that ranger can do quite some dmg over time by using conditions.. So my shortbow attack will crit on my target for 650 dmg or so, but 10 bleeding stacks of 112 dmg each will do 1,120 dmg/second..
If you want to see the HP bar of the monsters diminish by heaps, roll thief or ele I’d say..
So my question, how can I deal with that? Is a condition remove enough to break free, if timed right, or do the roots hold me in place themselfes and not only the immobelize?
A: Remove the immobilize condition and then get out of that same spot, since the binding root will reapply the immobilize if you keep standing there..
TL;DR version: Rangers need their DPS buffed..

Well, the “Miss” you see on your screenshot are from the monsters around you.. And this will be caused by the blind (which causes the first attack after applying to miss completely).
Should it have been one of your “Miss”, then it would have been shown in white (like the numbers from the dmg you do).
maybe a defiant timer would be better
every time you cc a boss a defiant timer starts.

Hey ANet, just make a tier only with Vabbi and FoW, so same-population servers can match out without being harassed by the third (high pop) server in the matchup.. :p
25 stacks of defiant just say “CC all the way, just make sure the 26th is the one worth it” :p
You do know that a stack of defiant is removed on new CC attempts when defiant is up, right?

I hate to see all those negative threads on these forums so would like to counter with one with a positive note..
I’d like to thank ANet for once again creating an awesome game that has kept me already for thousands of hours busy, and will keep me busy in the future. Of course, each game has its flaws and balance tweaks, but these fall into nothing compared to the great fun Guild Wars (1 & 2) have given me already..
So ANet people, don’t feel too bad about those whiners complaining and flaming. They should be happy to have a game with no monthly fees and where each month new content is added.. I know I am.. :-)

Add to block list and move on.. Not much more that can be done about it, I’m afraid.. And look at the bright side: The kitten party member didn’t get his chest either..
Having 1000+ hours of WvW logged on my ranger, allow me to give you some insight into this awesome profession.. :-)
Weapons: Shortbow (with sup sigil of corruption (increased condition dmg))/Longbow (with sup sigil of earth (60% chance to bleed on crit))
Pets: Drakehound (knockdown/immobilize) and Spider (immobilize/poison)
Traits: 20/25/25/0/0
Armor: Power/Precision/Condition Dmg
Depending on where I’m running to/from, I switch weapons at times:
- When I’m running towards a keep/tower to defend, I replace shortbow with greatsword (to get into the tower blocking (#4) and running (#3)). Once I’m in the tower, I can easily switch to Longbow and start barraging..
- Running for an assault: Take greatsword instead of longbow to get there quicker (#3). Once there, take out the shortbow and start conditioning.
- Running in zerg: Take out the warhorn from time to time to buff the others, switch back to your weapon of choice afterwards..
