You know what made me laugh? From warrior’s description:
They can still do some decent damage at range, but they aren’t as good at it as the Ranger (with their pet).
Why is it laughable? It’s pretty true.
I don’t remember this, but was SnR able to rez dead players? I thought before it only rezzed downed players. But I just tested it and I can order my pet to rez dead players. This is a humongous buff to this skill!
The idea that the ranger does more ranged damage than the warrior or even an engineer with the grenade kit is laughable at best.
Why is this laughable? Have you actually tested it out?
So it resets at 4 pm Pacific. Which is…5 pm at Central? Correct me I’m wrong. Is Central +1 or +2 to Pacific?
Regardless, 4 pm Pacific is the reset time.
The reset happens at 0:00 GMT. What is your timezone?
If they are still working on it now, that means it is not being tested and we are going to get a buggy patch that is going to be tested on us instead.
No it doesn’t. If they are working it now, it doesn’t mean they haven’t worked on it/tested it before. The two things aren’t mutually exclusive.
PATCH IS LIVE
Log on, and enjoy.
Either I still have to wait 1 or 2 minutes, or you just trolled me.
ugh he is level 1 troll
Does that mean you loged on?
i was already online thats why i replied to your post
i wouldnt need to loggon to check it just open the launcher
your special…. or just plain kitten
Why you so mad? It is just a game though.
Time zone discrimination is srs bzns.
Work hours are also serious business. You know, Anet employees who’re working on Pacific time.
Screw that! The engineers at Anet shouldve been at the office 3am PST last night pushing this through just for the EU. The increase risk of mistakes due to fatigue and extra overtime costs are totally worth it.
Bah. Saying you start work at 3 am PST implies you stopped working before that. Why stop working at all?
Yes, we know. And that’s why releasing the patch early in the morning or at least before noon makes MORE sense than releasing it in the late afternoon or evening. Because if anything goes wrong THEN, they’ll have to work overtime.
→ Implying that they can release patch right now.
I somehow doubt they’re delaying the release just because they can.
Patience is a virtue, good sir.
Peacemaker Longbow (Asuran t3 cultural weapon) is quite large. I don’t have a screenshot, but you can preview it in Rata Sum.
I’m not sure how this will help. Unless you’re saying it completely bypass the pet swap cooldown?
and player-driven endgame many have dreamed of since Dark Age of Camelot
…lmao.
Exactly what was it competing with for MMO of the year? Secret World?
I think that’s specifically referring to WvW. DAoC also had a similar feature.
so you are saying that it’s a perfectly fine game design to have to use a third party website to form a group, for a dungeon in a game where dungeons were never supposed to be the main focus of end game progression with loot?
And you find no irony in this?
Sigh. Lets not put arguments in my mouth. Please?
OP complains about not being able to find a group to run exp mode dungeons. Uses it as evidence that Anet is “killing their game.” I point out website that OP can use to find said players to run dungeons with. I then use my personal experience to point out that, yes, you can still find groups to run dungeons with.
Is the lack of a LFG silly? Yes, yes it is. Pointless to discuss about it though. They have already said they are working on it.
Shouldn’t be forced to go to an outside source for gaming fun.
Should, shouldn’t….No you shouldn’t have to go to a 3rd party website to look for a group. But it is a work-around to the problem currently. So I use it. Again, no point in discussing the lack of a LFG system in GW2. They know about it, they’re working on it.
(edited by Ursan.7846)
In this topic, we use personal anecdotes to try to support our statements.
I did a CoF and an SE run yesterday. Found a group in like ~10 mins. Did you try the website gw2lfg.com?
Barrage does more damage than what you’re suggesting unless I’m missing something. The damage scales up with each hit. I often get up to 3-4k with the last shot.
Also note that tomorrow’s update will increase the speed of the longbow.
That damage you see is the total cumulative damage done by a channeled skill. If you look at your combat logs, it will show the individual damage the ticks do.
Also they said they’ll increase longbow projectile speed, not firing rate. Though the projectile speed improvement is still very important and nice to have…
i have 2400 gems, and can get 35 gold right now…. if i wait till tomorrow you think that the gold will increase?
Hold it till Wintersday. I imagine lots of people will buy gems, further increasing the rate.
I somehow doubt it. I play a ranger, and I run dungeons with a group of friends. Two of them play a War and a Guard, and I notice I get aggroed a pretty good chunk of the time.
I’d like to apologize on behalf of the posters who aren’t really answering your question.
Guardian fits into the tanky/support profession. Note, however, Guild Wars 2 really frowns upon pure tank/healing roles. You will still be expected to pull your weight in terms of damage.
As for weapon choice, my advise to you is try them all out. Each Guardian weapon has its own uses. If you visit the Guardian subforums, there’s actually an incredible wonderful guide that explains each Guardian weapon. Read up on it. But make sure you try out each weapon though, see what fits your personal preference the best.
Traits, you have a total of 70 trait points to spend (at lvl 80). Each profession has 5 trait trees, and one tree is maxed out at 30. So yes, you can put trait points into different trees (if that is your question.) At lower level, it’s not a huge deal, but designing a good trait build that works for you will be important later on.
Races have unique skills. In general, racial skills are inferior to profession skills (there are exceptions, of course). Personally, I suggest you choose a race depending on their lore.
Skill points are next to worthless.
That’s a false statement. You should look into the links I provided to the above poster.
@Ursan, yea it makes sense… But still, Skill Points seems to have a use when you want to craft one item with Mystic Forge, but overall there’s no use to it, like a consumable in GW1. Or is there?
Hoh, you have no idea what you can do with skill points….

the exchange rate is manipulated by “the company”.
The exchange rate is determined by supply/demand. In this case, many people are still using gold to buy gems, but much less people are converting gems into gold, which is why the rates are creeping up.
When prices increase so that eventually, about the same number of people convert gold → gems and gems → gold, prices will stabilize.
Though I didn’t post the raw DPS numbers, Crossfire outshines Long-Shot even in suboptimal situation for Crossfire (no bleed stacks) vs optimal situation for Long-Shot (long-range).
Crossfire dps (no bleeds): 134 dmg/shot * 1.93 shots/sec = 259 dmg/sec
Long Shot dps (at long range): 317 dmg/shot * 0.8 shots/sec = 254 dmg/sec
Rapid Shot dps: 1320 dmg / 5 sec = 264 dmg/sec
So as you can see, even when you completely ignore the bleeds, Crossfire out-DPSes the Longbow #1 and #2 skills. The reason why Longbow skills beat out Shortbow in certain situations is because of the amazing DPS of Barrage, and the numbers reflect that.
And oh yes, Barrage DPS:
1692 Dmg / 2.75 sec = 615 dmg/sec. Assuming you finish channeling and they stay entire duration.
one thing most players dont consider:
you can use longbows 3 and 4 IN BETWEEN the 1 autoshots, if timed correctly, without loosing much of the “delay” time between 1’s. This makes a quiet good difference in longbows dps because even if 3 and 4 arent mainly there for dmg, they still do. Compared to the shortbow, where using 2-5 significantly lowers 1’s dps because it will cost you more time during the animations.
That’s actually a very good point, and something I didn’t consider. There’s still gonna be some time wasted though, I’m just not sure how much….
(edited by Ursan.7846)
Time is money. About how long does it take you to earn that skill point?
I usually level up once in like 1-1.5 hours (through dungeon runs). So I look at 10 skillpoints as a 10 hour investment. If that makes any sense to you.
Gotta say for me Short bow has always been my fav (even after the nerf) the conditions plus speed make it the only real viable wvw weapon imo..
Long bow is way too random to do much but shoot people in a zerg or onto /out off castle walls..to maybe make them move away…
Longbow is still super useful in WvW. That long-range AoE/cripple is super nice to pepper into the zerg. and I use hunter/rapid fire to snipe at people who are downed, but I don’t want to get near to stomp.
Can I have your stuff? =D
Even if longbow firing rate was slightly faster, it doesn’t change the conclusion too much.
With the current rate of fire, Longbow 1 at the longest range is equivalent DPS to Shortbow 1, WITHOUT the bleed. Add in the bleed, and the shortbow 1 is basically doing twice the damage. Even if it was slightly increased, shortbow 1 remains far superior.
@Ichan: I actually did some preliminary tests with Axe/warhorn and Sword. I might post some quick calculations, but these are single-target tests so dps will be pretty unspectacular, since these calculations don’t take into account multiple targets.
@Sleepy: Very good point. Since QZ doesn’t affect Crossfire as much as, quickness will increase burst of longbow that much more. That’s exactly what I do these days. Crossfire, swap, use quickness, barrage/hunters/rapid shot, swap back.
Disclaimer
These tests do not take into account many many many things, such as Longbow 5% dmg trait, conditional removal, obstruction problems, enemies with damage mitigation, traits, Hunter’s shot vulnerability, Barrage AoE, etc. So please do not use these numbers as a definitive conclusion.
Thoughts
1. Crossfire is by FAR our most damaging skill, especially with the bleeds. And bleeds are a huge part of Crossfire’s damage. In fact, with full Carrion gear, you achieve the same amount of DPS with 2 offensive stats (Condition Dmg, Power) as Rampagers’s 3 offensive stats (Cond Dmg, Power, Precision). Therefore, positioning for any Shortbow users is HUGELY important.
2. Long-Shot’s damage sucks. Like, sucks. Crossfire, by just its direct damage alone, matches Long-shot’s damage from long-rage. When you add in the bleeds it’s one of the definitive conclusions you can draw from this study.
3. Rapid-Shot’s dps was also…incredibly lackluster. It did a bit more damage than Crossfire in the same time period (1320 dmg / 5 s vs 1295 dmg / 5s of Crossfire. 1452 dmg / 5s if Rapid Shot was done after Hunter’s Shot with 10 vuln). And of course, once you add in bleed stacks this becomes a no contest.
4. Barrage damage is amazing, assuming you get the full channel off and the enemy stays in it for the entire duration. Which….won’t happen very often, even in PvE.
5. So what is a Longbow good for? Again, these calculations do not take into account several important things the Longbow provides you. Hunter’s Shot lets your entire team do 10% more damage, and Barrage is massive AoE dmg/cripple. The knockback skill is also handy to have. But when looking at single-target dps, shortbow wins out.
6. Although results weren’t posted, I did several tests to see which skill rotation does the most damage on a Shortbow. Turns out Crossfire 24/7 is the answer. Using any other skill decreases your damage output slightly.
Conclusion, for those who don’t want to read everything
Shortbow good for single-target damage, Longbow good for utility/AoE damage. Also, Crossfire rules and I hope to god it doesn’t get nerfed.

Hello folks,
After my previous Rifle War vs Shortbow Ranger tests, I wanted to continue in the spirit of science and research. I wanted to compare damages of Longbow vs Shortbow. In order to try out a larger variety of parameters, I opted to calculate everything instead of testing things out. Anyways, as before, I shall explain my methodology and post my results! So if you’re not interested in the methodology, feel free to skip to the results section. If you’re not interested in the results and just want to know what all these numbers mean, skip to the conclusion.
Methodology
First, it was decided to look at the damages of 1 skill on the Shortbow (Crossfire) vs 3 skills on the longbow (Long shot, Rapid Shot, Barrage). The reasoning is that the other skills weren’t optimal for DPS (Shortbow everything else, Longbow knock-back) or the experimentalist was too lazy to deal with factors such as vulnerability (Hunter’s shot).
First, the damage of each skill was recorded. Then, the amount of time each skill took was recorded for Rapid Shot and Barrage. Afterwards, the shots/sec of Crossfire and Long Shot were observed and recorded. Listed below are the data gathered. Character had no traits and no equipment (0 power, precision, cond dmg, crit dmg)
Crossfire: 134 dmg, 1.93 shots/sec
Bleed: 43 dmg, 7 stacks max
Long-Shot: 176/229/317 dmg, 0.8 shots/sec
Rapid-Shot: 1320 dmg, 5s cast time
Barrage: 1692 dmg, 2.75s cast time
After the above data was gathered, the numbers were put into a series of formulas that calculated the total damage in a 9s and 30s skill rotation.
9s was chosen because it’s the time required for a weapon swap. It’s the time you have to swap into the longbow, use all your skills, and swap back again.
30s was chosen because it is the cd for Barrage. So if someone is using longbow 24/7, this is the total skill rotation time.
In both rotations, Shortbow damage is calculated by:
Crossfire Damage * Shots/sec * Time + Bleed Damage * Bleed Stacks * Time
WARNING: bleed damage is a bit iffy. When a target dies, a bunch of bleed damage is essentially wasted. This effect is pretty significant on targets that die fast, but negligible in targets with tons of hp. For the purposes of these calculations (because the experimentalist is lazy) this wasn’t taken into account.
In the 9s rotation, Longbow damage is calculated by
Long Shot Dmg * Shots/sec * (9s-5s-2.75s) + Rapid Shot Dmg + Barrage Dmg
In the 30s rotation, Longbow damage is calculated by
Long Shot Dmg * Shots/sec * (30s-10s-2.75s) + 2 * Rapid Shot Dmg + Barrage Dmg
The biggest different between a 9s and a 30s rotation is the percentage of total damage Long Shot contributes to. In a 30s rotation, Long Shot contributes much more to the dmg than it does in a 9s rotation.
Two values were used for the parameters of Bleed Stacks and Long Shot Dmg, to see the effects of positioning.
For Bleed Stacks, a value of 0 and 7 was used. 7 is if all attacks are flanking, and 0 is no attack is from flanking.
For Long Shot Dmg, 176 and 317 was used. 176 is damage in short-range, 317 is damage in long range.
After everything was calculated, several sets of stats were applied to the total damage. A total of 6 stat sets were used: no stats, Berserkers, Rampagers, Valkyrie, Carrion, and Rabid. The equipment is assumed to be full exotic armor (1003 primary stat, 697 secondary stat, 78% crit dmg)
Power, Precision, and Crit Dmg were applied to the total Longbow damage, and the Crossfire damage excluding Bleed. Cond Dmg was applied to Crossfire’s bleed.
As a long-time Gw1 player having been sold to their philosophies and manifestoes, I have the right to tell them their reward systems are becoming derailed to OTHER MMO KITTEN and for them to fix it. I don’t care what other games you’ve played, I want improvements in my GW2 and you RNG lovers can go play w/e gazillion other mmos out there have.
But…RNG existed in GW1 also. Rare skins like Voltaic spear and such were random drops from dungeon chests. Ectos are a random loot from enemies in the UW.
So if you weren’t “lucky,” you just had to grind, earn gold, and buy it (which is what I did.)
RNG exists to ensure item rarity. If RNG didn’t exist, then “rare” items would have to be made rare by making them require tremendous amount of effort to get.
yes ok, animal, utilities etc etc … but when you do 24k damage with 1 shot you do not need to much all the other things …
Eeeeeeeeeeh I think I’ll take my defensive utilities and sustained DPS over a single shot which has a 1.75s cast time, roots you as you cast it, and can be dodged.
Not to say Killshot sucks. It does big damage. But as with everything, it has its pros and cons.
Say i place a buy order for dusk for 25 G for kittens and giggles, some noob sees it since it is the only buy offer up at the time and thinks its a good deal not reading the rest of the the TP info like fact that it is being listed for 300G. I mean he is noob and does not want to try understand the TP yet or do any research about what he is selling. I mean he just thinks some sap is an exotic for 25 g when most other go for like 1g.
And the global TP prevents situation like that. Items like Dusk are very coveted. There will be more buy orders than sell orders, which will drive the price to the its supply/demand equilibrium. Situations like yours won’t exist, because you can put up a buy order for 25G, but since it’s so coveted there is no way your buy order will be fulfilled. But if you do manage to grab it, then it means the value of that item is currently around 25G since obviously no one else was willing to pay higher than that.
I guess we need the TP to go since it cant cover stupid there.
Edit
I could care less what kind of trading system is in the game. But arguing on doing something based on stupid or lazy is not a very good argument at all
But why would you consciously add something that will hurt some people? Anet didn’t choose between the BLT vs direct trading. The BLT was a must for the economy. And then they had to choose between adding direct trading vs no direct trading. And the answer to that was obvious.
This isn’t a buff, as I’d never take this utility over the others I use (QZ, LR, Signet of Renewal, Sharpening Edge, Traps, etc…)
It’s funny, because a very similar “trade window” existed in the original Guild Wars.
It’s a shame how many useful features from GW1 didn’t make it to GW2.
And this is entirely about ArenaNet’s desire to have a hand in the market. They’re intent on taking gold out of the economy to make gem -> gold conversions seem better.
The devs made a conscious decision not to include direct trading. The biggest reason why there’s no direct trade window is because it can be used to scam people. It is impossible to scam people on the BLT, however.
It is impossible to scam a person with a WOW like trade window.
Well, list the advantages of a trade window then.
Aside from “able to avoid sales tax” there is really none. The sales tax is an important gold sink. Whether it’s good or not can be debated (I think it’s necessary), but does not take away from the functionality of the trading post.
I am not arguing for or against, i am just pointing out that a wow style trade system is scam proof per say since there is no issue of trust.
Lets say player A is trading item X, with player B who is trading item Y.
A believe X is of equal value to Y, which is why he’s making the trade. However, if he did more research, he would find out out X is double the market value of Y, and that if he sold X on the global market and bought Y with that money, he’d have Y + extra money. A just screwed himself out of some money, or B convinced A somehow to screw himself out of money.
There’s many many situations where players who aren’t knowledgable about certain things can get screwed out of things. Forcing everything to go through the trading posts ensures that NOTHING of this nature can happen at all.
And for the game dying, well i could place a big bet on the numbers falling in the past month and continue to drop
See, this is good politics. When you take the statement in vacuum, it may seem the game is “dying….”
Until you realize that player base decreasing happens to every MMO after launch.
So yes, you will win that bet. But it’s still not a good indicator to support the statement, “game is dying.”

You can purchase in-game gold with real money through the gem store. Buy gems → convert to real gold.
I don’t think any other sources of using IRL money is allowed, however.

Anet should ban them all
I’m shocked that this is even a question.
Devourer/Devourer for their range.
Knowing your level would help.
If you are lv 80 I’d say go kill some krakas.
Well I prefer to do it in a controlled environment. I run my tests by timing myself how fast I kill things, from various positions using different skill combos…
Which is Mists and LA dummies are awesome, but both have their flaws…
So I want to test out my damage for my various characters in PvE, and I was wondering if anyone knows a good place to do this.
I do a bunch of tests in the Mists, but the problem with it is that PvP doens’t have the exact stat combo I have in PvE. There’s the dummies in Lion’s Arch, but it is immune to conditions so I can’t test the effect of conditions.
Does anyone else know of other places in PvE where I can test things out? Thanks in advance.

When you start your game, you are asked to choose a home world. Is this the only realm you can make characters on? And if so then, if your server is FULL, you will NEVER get to play with new people joining the game, I.E. Freinds and Family that you told about the game. Seems like shotting yourself in the foot for refferals.
Please respond with a logical fix to this problem, aside from me and the other 10 friends I brought to the game at the start, moving to a VERY HIGH server. Since ALL the U.S. servers are either full or very high.
Constantly check back. Populations fluctuate daily, and sometimes hourly. The server you want to join could very well drop to very high if you’re patient and constantly checking.
I am sorry you don’t remember that. Doesn’t make it any less true so again I can refer to your ignorance. Also, I never said it was a crap kitten class thank you for assuming. You are a troll and the worst kind.
Whoa whoa, calm down there. Maybe he hasn’t seen it. Heck, I haven’t seen this post. If you can provide us with a link to this post however, would be greatly appreciated.
So I assume they’ve never tried D/D bunker elementalist, or D/D in general, so I’ll avoid that. I also assume they’re probably staff elementalist and that comes down to if they’re good with accurate placement attacks which my guess is they’re not. 25% maybe low, but 50% is an easy statement to say if you’ve played an elementalist. I’ll say ranger is one of the direct counters to elementalist due to the poke damage, but it comes down to
1. Synergy with traits
2. Low dps+projectile speed
3. Pets easily avoidable by strafing.
Well again, this goes back to my point that you can’t just compare pure damage. Yea, Perhaps Rangers do lower damage than a D/D elementalist. But I will assure you the fact that I am doing my damage at 1200 range means that I am a lot safer when I dish out my damage. I’m assuming from your posts that you talk mostly about sPvP, but in PvE, dungeons, and WvW, the ability to do good, sustained, ranged, single-target DPS is pretty handy, and I will gladly take doing less damage in order to be more safe.
So yes. Saying things like “Rangers do 25% less damage than other classes” is simplifying things, especially when you use it to make an argument that “_ is better than Ranger.”
But I do agree with you. Traits are underwhelming. Pets attacking moving targets is underwhelming.
2. Ranger damage is absolutely horrid, I have an elementalist and you can do 3-5k criticals via aoes per second, which also burn for 358 per second. Sorry, but Rangers cannot even do 25% the damage another class can.
But can you do 3-5k criticals via aoes per second…for 60 seconds? From a safe distance (1200 range)? I don’t play ele so I don’t really know, but a friend of mine who does play Ele constantly complains about his lack of single-target dmg and general squishiness.
But anyways, damage is so, so situational. There’s aoe damage vs single-target damage. Melee damage vs ranged damage. Burst vs sustained damage. Saying “Rangers cannot even do 25% the damage another class can” is a very simple and misleading statement.
Unless you’re a politician, of course =P
Lets not get real-life religion mixed up with in-game religion here. In real-life, religion is much more complicated since it is impossible to prove or disprove “God’s” existence.
Whereas in the game world, Gods do exist. Charr knows their “Gods” exist and have killed them. Humans know their Gods exist and worship them. Other races such as Asura/Norn also know of their existence. It’s a lot harder to motivate yourself for religious war when said God is so…non-mysterious, and not very hostile at all to the other races.
Last update, all Jon said was “we are looking to make substantial changes” to the Ranger. He didn’t promise anything specific.
This time, he made some preeeeetty specific promises.
Cause it’s much better to stand in LA LFG Fractals level 2 or not being able to do events cause you’re the only one there.
Lets be fair here. “LFG Fractals level 2” is a lot better than “LF 1 tank and 1 healer Fractals level 2.”
Unfortunately the pet would be dead in 10 seconds and the ranger 10 seconds after that, where the warrior would still be alive.
I know, I know, that’s not the point of the test. Props for actually doing some research and attempting to get answers.
Now now, lets not make such blanket statements shall we? Goes against the spirit of science. I will tell you right now in the many dungeons I’ve run, I’ve seen many a 5-sig warriors faceplant repeatedly
Why Rabid and not the Rampager gear?
It’s what I personally use on my Ranger for PvE. Mainly, I just wanted to do some comparisons for myself for zerker vs rabid. Decided to toss the results in. I think it’s pretty interesting because as a condition ranger, positioning is VERY important (pretty obvious, but the numbers show a pretty huge disparity)
