Honestly, if you wanna do good single target dps, grab an axe and auto attack. With axe/mace you can add some vulnerability to this, but it will never be like GW1 where you chain/rotate 3-5 attack skills constantly for a max output. Auto attack is the highest dps “skill”.

Crabtacular Achievement

Veldan.4637

1. Nope. When you have 3 karkas rolling around, they pretty much cover all the map.
2. Uhm… the large karkas (and also the small ones) auto target the one who has the crab… so this problem… doesn’t exist.
3. Yep. But again, 3 karkas, all rolling 1 simple dodge won’t save the others.

1. only if they have very different start points, often at least 2 are close together and cover nearly the same path
2. may be, but they often roll in the wrong direction, I suspect they roll to the place where you are when they start the roll
3. 1 simple rush skill will do the trick, also if the karkas roll at the same time then even 1 dodge can save you

I think it’s an awesome minigame and agree with what you wrote. I see a lot of people complaining, mostly about:

1. Lag. This is the only real issue, playing at off-peak hours solved it for me.
2. Chaos/knockdowns/pulls etc. This is the fun of the game, people who want that changed don’t understand it.
3. Crabtacular achievement. While I agree it’s not the most well designed achievement, I don’t get why some people seem to think they are entitled to getting all achievements if they put in enough playtime. If you don’t get it, then you move on without it. You don’t get any disadvantage, since the southsun meta achievement is easily doable without crab toss.

So ye, my praise to the designers too, but do check if you could reduce lag a bit for the next living story event :P

Crabtacular Achievement

in Last Stand at Southsun

Posted by: Veldan.4637

Veldan.4637

So to get crabtacular:

1. all players must ball up behind you
2. the big karkas need to roll in your direction
3. all players must fail to dodge / step aside / use the charge skill

Since none of these are things that you do, why is this your achievement? If anything, all the players that died should get an achievement cause they’re the ones that did something for it.

Why Do Most GW2 Players Hate Hard Content?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Veldan.4637

Veldan.4637

Seriously? You are talking about “Hard” PvE ? My god what have MMO’s devolved into.

“Hard” PvE is playing Dark Age of Camelot in 2005 doing a Masterl level 10 Raid with 100 people and you have the Boss at 10% HP and then BAM, 200+ Mids or Hibs(Enemy PLAYERS) port in and wipe your entire 100 person raid and kill the boss and get the loot. THAT is about as “hard” as “pve” will ever get in an MMORPG.

PvP that matters is “hard” content, it’s why I played DAoC for 10 years gladly paying $15 a month for the competition and rivalries. PvE is and never will be “hard”, sorry.

This is “bs”, sorry.

Mobs can be made nearly as smart as players, with far lower reaction times. GW1 gave us already a good look at this, mobs were probably smartest there form all games I played. If anet really cared, they could do something like this again, and they could definitely make PvE hard, even to you.

New Race or New Class?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Veldan.4637

Veldan.4637

We don’t need a new class or a new race when the current classes are not even that deep.

This, I’d much prefer to have more options/choices for the current classes than getting more. That being said, class > race because class affects the way the game is played, while race is basically just a character skin, and a lot of wasted time on making another main city, story etc. Cause nobody uses the main cities (LA > all) and the story is a one time thing, and quite forgettable in its current state (apart from trahearne who is so annoying it’s hard to forget him).

Open world or dungeons and why for you

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Veldan.4637

Veldan.4637

To me, GW2’s dungeons aren’t even nearly as fun as other MMO dungeons, mainly from the lack of heal/tank/dps/support class setups. So I’m all for open world content, which is lacking imo anyway since GW2 has no real “elite” areas in the world, and DEs got boring and pointless a long time ago.

Whats wrong with combining them both and bringing back OPEN DUNGEONS! Remember them from other games? Huge subterranean complexes with mobs difficulty jacked up. This games dynamic scaling should mesh well here. Scatter in a dozen Bosses on various re spawn timers/conditions and Bam you gotta a winner.

that would be awesome

Veldan.4637

If you just give ele’s an interrupt instead of vapor form, you’re just pushing the homogenization of all the classes. Not having an interupt, but an escape instead, makes Eles unique.

I would give them an instantly available interrupt instead of an instantly available vapor form (and keep vapor form in the skill set, but in it’s original form, as skill 3 with a cd on downed state start). About your point: would you say all other classes are homogenized? I don’t think so, and yet they all have an interrupt. Straight interrupt, knockback, knockdown, fear, stealth… I’m sure they could think of some fun skill for eles.

That being said, I think this solution would be fine too:

yeah, these forms shouldn’t be able to activate any kind of portals either and get out of jail free card (mesmer portal/gate portal)

keep vapor form at 2, but remove the easymode-escape-through-portal part

If nobody ever farmed everything would’ve been cheap. But people don’t realise this and continue to farm so prices continue to go up…. when people finally wake up and see how bad farming is for the economy maybe they’ll stop complaining about “nerfing” the loot of farming spots/dungeons.

This is false.

1. if nobody ever farmed, there would be less gold but also a lot less materials/lodestones/precursors… pretty much less of everything, and prices wouldn’t be much lower, in fact relatively they’d probably be higher

2. even the devs said farming is not bad for the economy

vaporform/vengeance too op

in WvW

Posted by: Veldan.4637

Veldan.4637

Vapor form was designed as a nr 3 ability, which it originally was, and it was fine as such. The problem was that elementalists were the only class without an instantly available stomp interrupt, and then some dev had the bright idea to switch their 2 and 3 around.

What they should have done, and can still implement, is keep vapor form at 3, and give eles some sort of interrupt skill at 2 instead of Grasping Earth. Then it would be fair for all classes, and elementalists wouldn’t be the only class that doesn’t care about getting downed in WvW anymore.

To make your quote true for everyone, Arenanet needs to implement some sort of prize or advantage for winning, rather than just a server rating.

More magic/mysticism less technology

It seems as though Anet is firm in their need to characterize GW2 in terms of innovative technology and steam-punk styled fantasy. I’ve gotten sort of used to this theme which prevails pretty much everything they’ve ever done for this game

Yes this is more ‘realistic’ and relevant to our modern conceptions of warfare. But we don’t play video games for realism do we?

+1 for this

I think for a more magic/mysticism feel, GW2 is simply the wrong game. Even GW1 had much more if it, though it wasn’t exactly your average high-fantasy MMO either. This direction is not going to change, and even if it does, it would not change the feel of the game unless they’d redo all the current content.

Veldan.4637

Sadly, this sort of behavior can’t really be moderated as long as people care more about fightclubbing than actually using the map objectives.

Exactly. Conclusion: make map objectives more interesting, for example:

- make taking tower/keep harder and not zergable in 2 mins, so there will be long lasting epic fights around it
- make taking a tower/keep matter, not only for a weekly score that most individuals don’t care about
- make killing enemies more important (if it was rewarding enough nobody would fight club cause it’d be too tempting to kill enemies, or for a zerg to wipe it all)

I’m sure there’s more options, but ye. Dueling mostly exists cause people are too bored with the regular gameplay and look for something that is actually interesting.

Currently, caravan guards only spawn when the dolyak starts moving to a destination. Otherwise, it sits undefended in the camp. If you have dolyaks sitting in the camp and you are upgrading, I think that the caravan guards should also spawn to help guard the camp/dolyak.

Yes, I think so too. Especially since a dolyak takes long to respawn, and even though it’s killed while idle you might take a tower and need it again before it’s respawned. So the guards are just as important in the camp as on the road.

I agree with every point the OP mentioned.

1. WvW was the most promising feature of the game imo, yet nothing really changed since launch apart from culling being removed (which was nice, but it shouldn’t have existed in the first place) and I quit it due to boredom.

2. Every farm I played got changed/nerfed (plinx, pen/shelt, steel tide, arah and probably more that I can’t think of in the couple of seconds I’m writing this), while farming keeps being a requirement cause of the high prices of legendaries / ascendeds / infusions / other items with nice skins.

3. I also think classes are quit ok but there are a lot of individual mechanics that took the fun away for me, thief stealth being the worst of them.

4. Yep it’s pretty ridiculous that only way to get a skin is to buy a small chance to get it.

Last point: fully agree, imo the reward system and incentive to play in GW2 are very bad. They are definitely the worst I’ve seen for an online game.

This is what's wrong with WvW.

Veldan.4637

Even a sentry moving and resetting can be a valuable bit of intel if you see it in time.

I hadn’t thought of it that way, although easy to circumvent this does at least give sentries some purpose.

Most of the things I don’t care about because they’re borderline worthless. The whole WXP thing has no real value at all. They can’t make it too good because players who are new to the game will be at an extreme disadvantage, which is fine, but there really isn’t any reason to bother with it. I check my rank maybe once a week. I still haven’t spent a single point.

I think you are wrong here, the traits like + 25% ballista damage or +1000 arrow cart range are definitely worth bothering with.

I feel that some siege (like the insanely powerful arrowcarts we have today) should actually be player controlled hard points on structures. This way they will always be difficult to counter, but at least a possibilty for the attackers unlike now where arrow carts on the ground behind walls can’t be destroyed.

Then they’d be like cannons and probably placed in some horrible spot where everyone can take it down with direct fire. Also, I don’t think arrow carts behind a wall are a problem because as far as I’ve seen they can’t hit anything other than the gate, and a half-circle behind the gate. Because you need to see an area to fire there and the camera is so that all you’ll see is the tower walls.

I also find it quite stupid that siege placed in a tower can be used to attack a keep (or the other way around). The whole point behind siege is to defend a keep or give the attackers a way to lure defenders out. It shouldn’t be to lay siege to the next structure in a line.

I totally agree, that’s a point I forgot to mention.

This all ties to your defensive structures not being defensive. Honestly, sieging any structure should be a near impossible task. You should have to bleed the defenders of resources and slowly take them apart. Even with arrow carts, the attackers tend to have every advantage. Why don’t the walls provide defenders added range and protection? Why aren’t players given protection for 6 seconds after leaving a structure’s door? Why can’t tower defenders send out a wave of guards to help push enemies back? Why is the outmanned buff so worthless? etc etc.

I agree again, it would be so much more fun if sieges were harder and longer lasting, rather than the 2-5 minute tower flipping we often see atm. It would not only be more fun to defend, but also more fun to attack, because taking a tower would truly be meaningful and feel like a big accomplishment.

Horrific class balance and design.
All classes designed to do DPS first and most designed to do nothing second.

I agree on this also, but decided not to mention it since it’s quite subjective/controversial. I posted my thoughts about class balance and design before, and turned out most people had totally different thoughts and it would be impossible to make it so that those people and me (and you) would all be happy.

This is what's wrong with WvW.

in WvW

Posted by: Veldan.4637

Veldan.4637

So I just deinstalled for another break cause I’m really frustrated / bored. I see a lot of issues in WvW, and wanted to share some to see other people’s thoughts about it.

- Poor implementation of WXP.
1. It encourages zerging to maximize WXP gain, which has been discussed to death and then some more. Very important issue that devs should prioritize.
2. Your rank is only visible by your enemies, who can’t see your name. So nobody except yourself can know what sort of world rank you have. They should at the very least make it displayable as a title.
3. Some of the most vital tasks are still giving 0 WXP. I’m thinking mostly of upgrading towers here. You spend lots of money on them, sometimes even golds, and get nothing back for it. Successful upgrades should give WXP to the person who started them. Also preventing a dolyak from being killed by enemy players should give WXP
4. Killing enemy players should always give a relevant amount of WXP, I often see 0, 1 or 2 WXP while enemies who are equally hard to kill suddenly give 66 WXP. I know why this is, but the lower limit should be something like 10 rather than 0.

- Defensive structures aren’t defensive.
What I mean here is that when you are defending a tower or keep, the wall from which you are supposed to defend is always the worst place to stand cause you’ll die to ground-target AoE in a matter of seconds. This also renders cannons, burning oil pots, and any other siege on the front walls useless because the first thing any incoming group of enemies does is take it down. Some towers, like Anzalias and Mendons only have “outer” walls, so whatever siege you place on walls can and will be taken down. This sucks and makes the already unpopular play style of defending even less attractive.

- Dolyaks are too weak
Dolyaks are vital in WvW since you can’t hand supply to the upgrading workers yourself. But they are also weak non-elite mobs that die in 10 seconds to a solo player. It’s pretty much impossible atm to prevent dolyaks from being killed cause even if you’re guarding one, enemies can mostly kill the dolyak before you kill them. What’s needed here is a supply camp upgrade that makes the dolyak stronger, something like “armored dolyak: increases the HP and armor of this camp’s dolyaks” and then you’d get veteran dolyaks that would require a group of 5 ppl to take it down in 10 seconds, rather than a single player.

- Lag / skills not activating
Enough said, let’s just hope it doesn’t take as long to fix as culling did…

- Siege timers
Nobody likes having to go back to a tower, or even camping there permanently, just to make sure the siege doesn’t despawn. The same way a cannon doesn’t disappear after 30 minutes, an arrow cart shouldn’t either. It’s not fun. Siege timers for the sake of preventing the maps getting full is fine, but then the timer should (for non-rams) only start when the person who created the siege logs off or leaves WvW.

- WvW achievements and titles
The titles are unobtainable as everyone knows. I’ve even heard (cba to check this) that some are physically impossible to get because if you assume that a person sleeps then the time required to get them is longer than human lifetime. Why any dev thought that was a good idea, I can’t even begin to guess. Having an unobtainable maximum is not in itself bad, but then you need in-between goals. For example if the maximum is a million kills, then hand out the first title at 1000 kills, the next at 4000, then 10000 etc. Pretty much like how GW1’s titles would update when you progressed further. That way, it would be no problem if nobody had the maximum because people would feel rewarded for their efforts and get something to show it anyway.

- Sentries
What’s the point in this? The only thing they do is make whole zergs stand in a glowing circle doing nothing for a while. The sentry itself is totally irrelevant and can’t even make the difference if he’s pulled into a 1v1. They might as well remove it and leave only the glowing circles for WXP.

There is probably more to be said about WvW, but this is what I could think of in the ~10 minutes that I wrote this. What do you think?

GW2 WvW needs to add more tactical aspects

in WvW

Posted by: Veldan.4637

Veldan.4637

There are very subtle advantages for an invading force that frustrate me regarding structure defense.

1) A little ledge on top of the the walls (not even knee high) prevents my characters with a bow from being able to hit a large number of the attackers.

You do realize this little ledge is also your only defense against getting pulled off the wall and nuked to downstate in 0,1 sec? Although I am with you in hating the limitation it gives to your projectile attacks, it has also saved me countless times.

2) Several casting classes have massively powerful aoe skills that can not only make that wall the least safe place to be, but also destroy siege within seconds unless it is placed in some awkward and almost useless place.

This is my biggest problem with defense. It’s just not fun to defend if the whole wall is one big red line pattern of aoe circles. The best thing you can do is pop invulnerability, run in to fire one attack and dodge out again. How is this fun, cause I can’t see it?

I think new ACs doing what they are supposed

in WvW

Posted by: Veldan.4637

Veldan.4637

I still see a lot of them being fired from safety?

Weird, cause when I’m defending a tower, I always notice that the first thing the enemy does is run to it and kill any ACs with wall aoe. The only ones that survive are the ones behind the gate on ground level, and those can only fire at the gate. This is also the reason I’ve been recently using catas / trebs more, cause you can actually place those further back where they don’t get killed in the first 10 seconds of the siege.

As long as it’s so easy to take them down with wall aoe I don’t mind ACs being more powerful. Then at least it might be worth firing it that 2-3 times before it’s destroyed.

What is pretty disheartening is ita been more than 24 hours after two MAJOR changes in WvW (mesmers and arrow carts) and yet the only Dev WvW related comments we have gotten so far have been about jumping puzzle chests and ascend gear. While I’m sure it’s tough for them given the scroll of posts on the forums, the complete lack of commentary on the two main WvW is disappointing.

There’s been decent responses relating to the PvE content and while there are a ton of radical posts out there, there is an equal number of reasonable and well thought out posts like this.

Would note that I generally feel like Devon Carver has been great in the past with interaction and feedback, but after such major changes yesterday and no color today, he dropped the ball this time.

Not that I’m defending the changes or anything, but I think it’s best that they don’t immediately respond to this. After big changes like these, people will always cry like it’s the end of the world. That’s even predictable and they must have known it would happen. Only after waiting a while, you’ll start to see what happens once people have accepted the changes and are able to play without constantly thinking “omg why did they change this”, which could be different from what the current forum threads make you believe.

That means no zerging or seiging. You are just playing into the PVE role.

Run small organized groups. Way more fun. Any group More than 5 is just a zerg waiting to happen and is not enjoyable if you run into a few players.

Just so an enemy zerg can come and wipe the floor with you. Way more fun you say? It would only be way more fun if the enemy also consisted of small organized groups. Which will never happen as long as zerging is rewarded most.
