The definition of “grind” to me is repeating a task/action/activity over and over again in large, sometimes excessively large, amounts.
This does not mean that “grind” is a negative term.
This is pretty much “the” definition (for the term used in gaming). It’s what the term was invented for. You can also google this btw, and find this on dictionnaries / wikipedia.
So I don’t really get why there is a thread debating the definition? If you have a different definition, you pretty much made it up yourself, and then why should everyone else care?
I like jumping puzzles where the jumping is hard, but where I don’t have to search where to go. So Mad King’s Clocktower and Skipping Stones were pretty awesome
I agree. Lots of people have been saying this from day 1. The system was designed to be simple and easily understandable for new players. They somehow didn’t think about the cost this would bring for more advanced players. While in GW1 the build making options were super high, and after 6 years I could still come with powerful new builds, in GW2 I pretty much ran out of ideas after 2 days. And always running the same setup (obviously) gets boring.
Traits are very limiting because of how you unlock them, with a linear point system. If all traits were one big pool and you could pick a few out of that, that would be a start to improving our build options.
I agree about stealth and stability:
I like to play warrior with at least one mace, and noticed that a lot of times my stuns are doing nothing cause of stability. So one day I decided “I’m going to counter it and take boon removal!!” . Then I looked through all warrior skills and… there was none. Traits maybe? Nope, also none.
While in GW1 I could grab a 2nd proffession and take removal from another class, in GW2 my only option really is rerolling. Yes there is a sigil , but the effect of it is random. I want to remove boon when the enemy has stability, not at random moments.
About stealth: dunno how we could counter this at all, there is a reason that other games only allow out of combat stealth…
I think the main thing is:
While normally you slaughter loads of stuff, including humans, in GW2, they are all evil in some form. Almost all mobs are lore-wise enemies, and Tyria is better off without them. Most of them will even bash your skull in, if you don’t do it to them first.
Killing little innocent defenseless animals is something different. It’s a shift in morality, and although I don’t mind it, I don’t think encouraging this is something that belongs in GW2.
Can’t say that I feel Eviscerate is underpowered. Still doing big dmg, I would use it even if it wasn’t a gap closer at all. Apart from that, I agree with everything said in this thread.
totally agree with Zepidel… and GW1 tooltips were always so clear, but it’s one of many good points of GW1 that they left out of GW2
I hate almost all dailies in MMOs. All they do is say “yes you are allowed to do whatever you want, but if you want to keep up with everyone else you have to do this” and then you gotta do a few boring tasks every day. Honestly, if GW2 devs still had the mindset of “in GW2 you can play the way you want” then dailies in their current form should not exist.
What would be the point in level cap raising? It’s not like level has much function in GW2 anyway, the only place it really matters is WvW (since all of PvE has downscaling and sPvP has upscaling). I would actually be in favor of removing level alltogether, so all mobs could just be balanced for one level and no effort needs to be put in scaling anymore. Now that would be a “revolutionary MMO” mechanic.
tl;dr I hope they don’t raise the cap
I fear my system will just melt into nothing. Unless the fix specificly targets WvW.
Yeah, I’m concerned the problem is just being pushed off to the players. As in, the problem will be fixed as long as you max all the culling options and have a fairly new/beefy system that can handle the additional workload.. otherwise you’re out of luck. Hopefully not.
Even if so, why is this bad? You know a better system is gonna give a better experience in MMOs with lots of people around. You know this before buying a system, and before buying an MMO. If people with a bad system are still given the option to activate culling and have a smooth game with that, I don’t see a problem with this.
Also to those who think culling is hardware / internet related: get a clue please

In a good game (requires some balance), fighting an enemy team with your team never gets old. Capping a point however, got old to me after first week of GW2.
And srsly, I have a feeling, that old gamers have simply forgotten how “good” was WoW’s 1st year, GW1’s 1st year.
Cause the company that made GW1 could not learn from its mistakes and strong points while making GW2? So many people seem to think this, yet I fail to see why…
Yet, many people stay, because Anet managed to develop the most amazing and most skill req(well i believe so) MMORPG.
Your definition of “many” is probably different from mine. I counted the hot join browser on a weekend night, and there were roughly 400 people in it. Compare to the few million copies that have been sold, and the conclusion should come easily.
I always hated this about GW2. While humor in itself is not bad, I just didn’t see what was funny about it in GW2. Didn’t laugh a single time, was only annoyed that there wasn’t more serious / mature storyline and dialogue.
The whole game feels like that guy who thinks he’s a whole lot funnier than he really is.

I want Heroes’ Ascent back! GvG may have been the true high-end PvP but… HA was most fun by far to me. It was pretty much a flawless system imo. The different game modes, the 3 sided battles, the ghostly heroes and priests to protect… tbh still the best PvP experience I’ve had in all games. So ye why they decided to not put anything even remotely close into GW2, I will never understand.
Because when they tried different modes during testing they found that in deathmatch people would just avoid combat and run away till all their abilities like ultimate skills were up so they could guarantee a win.
So instead of noticing that their skill balance was off, they decided to go for a different game mode. Can’t say I see the logic in it…

I’m guessing you didn’t play GW1 then. There was nothing boring about the death matches in Heroes’ Ascent, and people are only selfish if it is rewarding to be selfish. For example, if your individual efforts would not give you any glory / points, and only the group effort did, everyone would do what’s best for the group.
If it meant no gem store, then yes. I personally much rather pay a subscription for a game than have a way in it to convert real money to game money.
I don’t see what’s the big deal with subs anyway. If you can’t pay 10 € a month for example, then appearently you don’t care much for that game. I’m only a student with a side job in supermarket, not rich at all, but I don’t mind paying a sub.
It doesnt. GW2 was advertised as a living, breathing world. It isnt. Just a few scripted events here and there, nowhere near enough to give that feeling.

I hated teleports and stealth from the first day of sPvP that I played, and always found it bad that energy was removed. All it does is needlessly simplify the game.
And Deniara has some really nice ideas, especially about counter mechanics and points 6 and 7. I’ve been annoyed by the excessive burst since day 1. Yes we have dodging now, but that doesn’t mean the burst damage needs to be raised to make up for it. After all we don’t have heal/protect classes in GW2. On counter play: even RuneScape back in 2004 (that’s when I played) had already understood the concept of counter, and gave players an ability called “tele block”. It’s so simple, yet so effective and I think it would improve PvP quality if something like it was introduced here.
TLDR: “Make GW2 into GW1/WoW clone with trinity, manabars and remove thieves because I haven’t figured out how to counter them”

Gear progression in raids could be created in a lot of ways without affecting the rest of the game. A few examples:
1) raid gear that is only equippable in raids
2) raid gear that only works in raids, and acts as a cosmetic / wardrobe set outside
3) raid gear that is only especially strong in raids, and has exotic stats outside
This way, they could implement raids WITH gear progression, and still not ruin the rest of the game. Everybody would be happy, except for those who want an unfair advantage over non-raiders, but those should search another game

As a warrior, I can say my 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 rotation worked perfectly well in dungeons and fractals, except I had to fit some dodges in sometimes. But I would say 1-dodge-1-1-1-1-1-1-dodge-1-1-1-1 is still not exactly a fun way to play (though very effective).
…Not using your adrenaline move at all? That’s a bit weird.
because of the 12% dmg and 9% crit from traits that work only when you got adrenaline filled, using your ability is actually bad for dps

Of course I did not play only 111111 all the time. I’m just saying it’s possible and not bad at all.
Yes it’s better to use FGJ than passive power signet, but when I used a signet, nobody cared and the dungeons were smooth and fast anyway. Same for heal skill. The difference is there, but small. Also apart from FGJ, signets are pretty much the only warrior skills that are not situational, giving them an advantage, and promoting passive play even more.
Tbh if you play 8 hours and get only 4 rares, you’re unlucky

All kidding aside, I kinda like that rotations vary in their practical applications, and that not every class presses every button to do a DPS rotation. I’m kind of a fan of not having to stay 100% on top of my rotation to play the game. It’s true that a complicated DPS rotation adds depth, but depth can be added in other ways.
Being able to click through a few potential buttons might be nice, though, like you can change between your skills? You should be able to click an arrow above your 1/2/3/4/5 and change it to something else. Like if you’re a necro with a tootyhorn, you can change your daze toot to a fear toot.

You get the idea, it really isn’t much different than other games with rotations just a lot more simplistic. I made a warrior and leveled him to 35 by that time most of my PVE encounters consisted of pressing the 1 and 2 key as 3, 4 and 5 where soley situation and actually made killing things take longer.
There are several classes in this game who can effectively survive with there heal skill and the 1 key.
Try that rotation in some dungeons and let me know how that goes for you.
The idea is that most simple world stuff you can get away with doing that, but it’s not so easy to do that and survive in most dungeon situations, or in fractals.

I can steer my car with my feet, but that doesn’t mean I want to drive that way. Seriously, if thats how you want to play, fine. But its not all about dps.
steering a car with your feet is hard makes you more likely to fail, killing stuff in GW2 with skill 1 is easy and you can’t really fail it (since you don’t even have to press a button)

- effects are often one big spell mess and hardly distinguishable
- teleports, stealth and NPC spawning are way too frequent, causing confusion and making it nearly impossible to assess the state of the battlefield
very small in size and features
- only capture points game type
- only 3 maps for tournies, 5 for random play which still isn’t much
- tournaments last only 3 rounds, would be way more exciting if it was like GW1 HA where you could have 10 rounds, although this might only work if there were actually 10 maps
- no rankings, no duelling, no custom tournaments for testing, QP list is posted on the forums, which is nice of them to do but it also shows they just failed to put it in the game or even on some PvP section of the website, cause not everyone visits forums
too many anti-fun mechanics (note: these are very much personal opinion!)
- downed state
- high amount of NPCs in PvP (ranger pet, necro minions, mesmer clones, guardian weapons, engineer turrets, even random rune and sigil spawns like rock dog)
- frequent in combat stealth
- mesmer clones
- unnecessarily powerful skills and traits (100% invulnerability, 100% evade, 100% increased attack and activation speed, 25% passive run speed boost, etc)
Especially the last point is a big downer for me, GW1 limited the power per skill a lot and this worked out very well imo. It created a fun PvP environment where one, two or three shotting someone was absolutely impossible, and where a smart combo or a group effort was required to reach the power that GW2 has in a single instant activate button, that doesn’t even have energy cost cause for some reason they thought it smarter to simplify the game even more.

If to be honest i didint read anything you wrote but answer to your question is – NO. This isint PvP game in any universe. This game has worst PvP i’ve seen in my 13 years of gaming experience. Period
FLFW, my wayward son. You haven’t a clue. GuildWars2 has the best PvP mechanics/playstyle i’ve seen in any MMO, and others would agree. It is by far the superior MMO right now if you look at it in that light.
So let me see, FLFW and you both have an opinion. They are different and somehow this means FLFW “haven’t a clue” and you are obviously right yourself.

gotta agree with FLFW, it’s the worst of all the MMOs I played, excluding maybe a few old ones that were designed as free P2W games.
And to the thread title: No it obviously isn’t. Look at the amount of effort put into PvE, then at PvP and WvW. Play through all the content in all the modes and make a fair comparison. The answer should come easy to everyone.

@terrahero you are wrong on the way you think. You need both organized guilds and pugs to actually have the game survive.
He actually said exactly this, “carry” means there are actually pugs present to be carried. And I think he is right, you need the organized WvW guild people to start something, and then all the pugs will join it, either by going to the commander icon or asking in chat where the action is.
I don’t think WvW needs to cater to a specific group of people though, it just needs to be fun. Then everyone will join regardless of if the rewards are good for PvE players or just for pure WvWers.
Yep posting this was a bad decision, though in the long run it won’t matter. What matters is the February patch, I hope it’s some great stuff cuz if not, WvW population might just take a big hit…

Downscaling is pointless when the rewards are inferior to the end-game events. This alone is why downscaling has had zero effect on whether or not people revisit old content.
What’s the point in going back to them when you could do any event in Orr and get way better rewards? I don’t see any reason for downscaling it at its current design.

Hey remember that one time when ANet said we could play our way? Yeah, me too. I enjoy being a healer in GW2, said no one ever. I enjoy being forced to range in GW2, said no one ever. I enjoy being instagibbed by buggy dodging mechanics in melee range, said no one ever.
Stat’s on gear. Bad idea. This is not how GW ever worked, other than runes and armor level. Our customization always came from attribute allocation which affected our builds based on what skills we were using. Why are they going from unique and interesting to boring and grindy, needing multiple sets of gear with different stat’s?
Pvp balance. What’s up with all the knee-jerk nerfs that ANet supposedly doesn’t like doing?
Bugs. I’ve ran into the same kitten dodge bug for months now, while in melee usually during an autoattack if you press dodge it will hold you in place and not even work right. Also the immobilize bug where your character randomly gets stuck in place and you can’t do anything, that’s a great one too.
Loot nerf/farm nerfs. Lol I don’t even- obviously this is a ploy to get us into the gem store, no more needs to be said.
Lack of Depth doesn’t even begin to touch the surface with what is wrong in this game. It’s the lack of intelligence coming from the dev team imo.

Sure, get rid of Quickness but make Hundred Blades hit 33% harder while moving.
I love how this community just runs its mouth without thinking of other classes who has to have quickness to be effective. More complaints will simply come out from getting rid of quickness if ANET gives compensation to the classes who need quickness the most.
Just sad if you ask me. And no, don’t tell me to L2P. Just how do you play Warrior right now without Quickness? Bunker? But whose going to do that? I bet the majority of you can’t even prove anything anyways. So knowing that, it boggles me, why are you people even talking about quickness? Please tell me how to play a typical-Warrior without Quickness right now? Its hard without it because if they take out Quickness, THEY WILL COMPENSATE the class. And more balance issues are going to arise.
So yeah, just give up.
I played warrior without quickness for 4 months, was perfectly fine, no compensation needed for altering frenzy

Yeah pvp in GW2 its p bad, i play paids i have beaten good teams and i get beat by good teams (i loose more than i win, im not saying that im awsome im just saying that i know how the game works and what happens arround).
First of all it promotes 1v1 and 2v2 in a game called guild wars … yeah u can send 5 mid and u will loose cuz the other team sended only 2 dudes or maybe 1 and they are back capping and forcing the small figths, wich is cool i like small figths in fact i love em but still its p basic for that the entire game is only that (well tpvp wise).
Yep i played aion too it was a fun game i played it a lot, im not saying it was the best game ever but it was enjoyable. Lets talk about dredgion it was like a pvepvp, 2 roads and 3 parts to meet in the middle while u kill mobs and u could use the mobs to kill other ppl, but in the end was just team fight after team fight (gladis kill clerics, dps kill dps, sorcs cc, clerics well … its not hard to figure out what they do).
In this game is like this u send 1 bunker mid, 1 dude cap home, 2 or 1 go the back way and see if they can get a 2v2 or 1v1 in their point, while the last dude either goes mid or goes arround looking for the necro/roamer/ or help the guy in mid. And thats it then if u win the 2v2s 3v3s u just look from where the 2 or 3 dudes are going out and u just chase em arround.
If for some reason a team figth happens lets say 4v4 or maybe 5v4 cuz well .. mesmers or maybe some1 died. its really bad. yeah obviuosly u got the warrior that get focused and the necro by the sin / warrior, some1 dies pop stab the dude gets sig then the roamer is like f this goes backcap and force the 1v1 and well back to the start.I think when they were making this game they tougth hey lets make this game like a moba and instead of having lanes lets just have points cuz that what kids want rigth?
maybe i have no idea what im talking about, maybe im mentally disabled but thats how i see things in this game. But i think i just think that even L2 pvp was more advanced than this 1 lol.
Looks like you’re missing a proper group vs group fight mode. Same here tbh, I wish they’d just make a seperate game mode that was simply death match or at least something that doesn’t involve splitting up. People may say it’s not fun in GW2, but if people would start speccing for it, I think it could be fun.
quickness is too strong. too bursty, too much quickstomps, just sooo soo powerfull.
And yes, its not fun to see haste / frenzy / time wrap that just decided the game.

It means diminishing returns, so it can apply to anything. A few other games had DR on CC, maybe that’s what the OP meant.
I agree with all points.
I played lot of other games (aion, tera, gw1, rift, lotro, …) and purely looking at fun, I would rate GW2 pvp lowest of all, mainly because of points 1 2 and 3 made by the OP.

A lot of people may disagree, but fact is: if downed state is removed, I will instantly install the game again and play PvP.
All other points you make are a nice bonus, though I disagree on point 2. Capture points is fine, only it should be optional (there should be more than just capture points).
You’re probably hearing the lack of depth from players like me who are coming from GW1. The combat itself is fine but skill choices are extremely limited in comparison, sure the combat is far more exciting than any other MMO (imo) but the lack of skills just makes it boring when I was able to choose from literally hundreds of them, and thousands of different combinations.
Also combat feels more single player than anything without roles, I’m not interrupting casters or snaring melee to protect my backline, it’s every man for himself and sure if you see an AoE on the ground go ahead and drop a finisher but it really doesn’t feel like team work. This is supposed to be an MMO, not a single player RPG.
I would say right now playing GW2 is akin to playing GW1 with a full party of heroes. Feels like no human interaction because it’s all about pewpew and nothing else. Builds, where are they? I had a new saved build every week in GW with a template changer for no cost at all. I could be an assassin with a hammer, a monk with daggers, etc.
The argument really depends on what games you are comparing the combat to. If you ask me, GW2 combat as a whole is crap because the choices you have run out incredibly fast. I’ve been using the same build, same combo, for months now. My only 2 choices are basically pure physical damage or pure condition damage.

Well said, I mostly agree with you. The only part I don’t agree is where you say GW2 is like GW1 with heroes, cause GW1 heroes had such a good AI that the interaction between party members could easily be as good as if they were human players. But on topic now:
Not only in GW1, but also in other games I felt like I had a lot more options than in GW2. In GW2 I used the same build for months too, and I almost said “same combo” but then realized it was more like “same skill” (axe auto attack skill 1)
This is also something that makes GW2 combat a lot more boring compared to any previous game imo, the fact that skill 1 is not only auto attack with no cost/recharge but also the highest dps, so you can just use skill 1 and win the whole game by doing so (well, by using skill 1 + dodge/heal). Cause depth is not only amount of builds, but also the amount of ways you can play with a given build.
In other games you could sometimes search for good rotations. Now some people may not have liked that, but it sure required skill/practice and allowed for a lot of creativity. For example in RIFT I played a mage and there were a lot of rotations possible while playing the same spec, and they all had competitive dps. In other games like LotRO and Aion, it was possible to “weave”, put in auto attacks at the right moment between skills. It was a skill requiring way to optimize both long term dps and burst.
In GW2 we can just spam skill 1, bye depth.

All depends on what exactly you’ll do. For large scale WvW, I ran some 30 power 30 crit 10 vitality build. (if with longbow, trait the extra range, with rifle trait the immobilize on cripple). Was great fun and insane damage. 1v1 was possible too, use rifle then when they are low finish with weapon swap + arcing arrow. But for serious small scale fights, semi-defensive melee is much more effective.
I played full defense in every dungeon run. It worked really well tbh. Regardless of actual traits, 300 toughness really helps. I used to run:
+200 toughness while in immobilize/chill/cripple state (cause often warrior is gonna take heavy dmg when unable to move properly)
20% mace reduction cooldown (I always used a mace in offhand, nice to have reduced cd on vulnerability /knockdown)
25% hp endure pain… now this one was actually not that useful, it’s a lot nicer in PvP than PvE
The female sylvari crippled sound is almost the most annoying thing in the game, the most annoying thing being that this sound is repeated every few seconds.

I played other games with similar exchange mechanic, and they were full of gold sellers anyway. The only reason they don’t have a big presence in GW2 is that Arenanet is actually succesful at fighting them. Ever noticed that at the start you’d see spammers and get gold seller mails, but not anymore, while the demand for gold should have increased because of ascended?
