Nobody is afraid of retraiting, its just they (I) don’t really want to be forced into retraiting for the pet everytime I swap it

I think this is where we might have thought of something else. My initial thought was the trait menu be consistent once distributed, and all pets would be using the same distribution until the player has modified it. Like how the player’s trait remain the same even after we have swapped weapons.

It sounds like you’re thinking that the traits automatically reset upon equipping a new pet, which, I don’t know where you got that.

Edit: Also, no worries about the image editing skills, but you might have overlooked something. Attributes were adjusted adding points gained from the trait distribution onto the base stats of a lv80 pet. Distributing in the example provided above for a Zerker-type pet yielded a nice boost in stats while keeping it tame since it would still be glassy (the Jaguar).

You would have had to adjust the attributes as well for the trinket, which seems more like “Pet Armor,” which has been suggested in the past. Anyways, if going off the base stats of a Jaguar and using trinket distribution from the PVP template (as you used), it would adjust the Jaguar to have 2024 Power vs 1824, 650 Ferocity (800 with Pet Prowess) vs 250/400, and 2993 Precision vs 2461. That’s too much.

If you meant it as the current attributes being obtained only after applying the trinket, then that means the base stats of pets would receive a nerf in stat reduction. Again, not sure if you caught that I’m suggesting to add onto the already established stats. If you did, then ignore this part.

You’re over-thinking what people may or may not do, Heimskarl. The typical and casual Ranger player will usually use the same build and pets for multiple modes.

In PVP, players tweak stats all the time in the lobby and do testing. WVW Rangers would probably find the added layer of customization great, especially if they can have Agility Training for their pet to have a higher hit consistency on a moving target via pet traits, without sacrificing a Skirmishing trait slot or investing extra into Skirmishing with their own traits.

As for PVE and Dungeon/Fractal Rangers, the ones that are great at them carry multiple weapons with different sigils, as well as swap out pets and traits frequently for situations. Doing it for one more menu will only bolster optimization rather than hinder it, especially since most can do it while on the move or quickly with time and practice.

If Rangers are given a separate trait menu for our pets, it will be there for those that want to take full advantage of it. For the rest, they can find settings and pets that they like, (such as double bows and tanky bears), and stick to them for whatever mode they play at their leisure.

Edit: Also, there is some QoL improvements here and there. Specifically, with the first point of sorting, organizing, and taking advantage of the search and filter options from the PVP menu and incorporating it into the Pet Management Menu. I had suggested a different layout before, as shown below, but having a search and filter was too good to pass up (imo).

I don’t believe giving pets a trait menu of their own would be too complex, though, I do like the idea of preset stats. I personally think a trait system could utilize the pet-centric training traits without having to invest points and use trait slots on the Ranger to boost our pet while placing ourselves at a disadvantage.

An optional extension could be to make some of the minor and major traits dealing solely with the pet to be exclusive for the pet trait menu and Anet working their brains on providing new traits for those vacant slots and reworking Beastmastery.

Though, I’m down with an option of having traits obtained by pets to be inaccessible in the Ranger trait menu. :P

Aside from the first suggestion of the pet menu being redone and organized, I looked at the PVP menu and thought it would be a nicer template if the pet menu were to be revamped. With the “Filter” drop down for selecting all or certain species and the “Search” function for finding a pet by name.

As an added suggestion, what would the community think if Rangers were able to distribute trait points specifically for the pets? Working similar to the player’s trait menu, each point placed in a certain traitline will increase 2 specific stats by 50/5% while Beastmastery remains the same, plus, adding 50 healing power per point invested.

If pets were also given their own trait menu, how would the community feel if certain traits such as the “Training” traits (ie: Malicious Training) would be available upon investing enough points in certain trait lines for the pet? Thereby, freeing up a trait slot for for the Ranger to use something else.

I know I could have explained that last part better, but below is an example of what I’m thinking of. Thoughts on this?

Last I checked, this was added recently with the “F5” keybind option. It’s currently present and it allows for the keybind of the Avoid Combat/Guard status icon which most Rangers had to click on until now.

F1 and F3 are still and may remain the same as far as I know. It’s not a hint of change in pet mechanics, more like giving Rangers an option that should have been present at launch.

Wanting to know where the Ranger community is if pets ever receive a limited cleave and/or AOE. Such as all melee pets that currently hit 1 target are changed to now be able to hit up to 2. Maybe to go as far as give the Spiders’ auto attack a 60 radius that can hit up to 3 targets.

Thoughts? Or are pets all right as they are now with the amount of targets they can hit?

But I found out that even when set on passive, a pet “Guarding” an area will still run to your target if you start attacking. Is this something others found as well, or was it just me?

From what I recall, the pet does attack a target you are attacking, but it has to be within a certain range from the pet and/or you. I’m not sure on the range but here is a screenshot of how close I and how far the target was from my pet so he would remain guarding his spot.

Trouble charming pets

Not 100% sure (so don’t quote me), but I believe ANET changed/removed some pets in a few starter areas from being charmed, so some of them might still be named “Juvenile” when they are not supposed to be.

Even the Black Bear’s wiki page has been updated to list Blazeridge and EB as their only tamable locations.

Yeah, it’s annoying. Besides spamming F3, Rangers can use “Guard!” and place their pet away from those encounter such as CoE P2 Golem room or while charging the traps in AC P2. It’s cd is rather short, duration lasts quite a bit, and can be swapped out after those sections are complete.

CoE P2 set the pet in the back of the room before the boss area, maybe set them a little ways down the ramp and pull the mini golems in the far side of the bomb room. AC P2 is easier to place the pet.

Alternatively, the best thing to do is let the rest of the party do those parts since Pets are more of a liability, and take a break.

Traps viability and signet of hunt

I believe Ranger mobility is all right, considering Swoop on Greatsword and Sword 2 that can be chained to move good distances. Warhorn also provides swiftness.

As for traps, they could be better, but I don’t think using a trait slot to trigger it with a Blast Finisher is necessary. It would be better to have the ability to manually detonate traps along with being automatically triggered by enemies.

Manual detonation since tossing traps onto downed opponents will not trigger or can be used to setup fields out of combat for combos such as Might stacking. For the moment, a set of Superior Rune of the Trapper increases trap viability if you choose to go that route.

Signet of Stone’s active is 6 seconds last I checked, not 8, and Rangers are still vulnerable to CC and conditions. Plus, 80 second cooldown, 64 when traited. I believe it is fine where it is.

Edit: I think a more realistic adjustment to Signet of Stone is to have it considered a Stun Breaker. It is odd (to me) that it functions similar to a Warrior’s Endure Pain, but lacks the stun breaker.

Also they need to either remove the ability for opponents to pickup the forage items or all opponents to pick up conjured weapons.

Yeah, I just focused on the menu layout for the land version, minus the fish because I wanted to sneak in the dolphin. Currently, both the land and sea menus seem like a jumbled up mess.

As for Foraging, I believe the best solution (imo) that I have read is to have the item appear into the Ranger’s hand rather than the object lying on the ground.

Playing Guild Wars 2 for over two years and a Ranger for fair amount in the first, after taking a hiatus from the game and returning, there were plenty of nice changes. However, I believe a few things can be altered to improve the QOL for Rangers, new and old, when it comes to the Pet Management window, as well as a few other changes to pets.

New Organization Menu:

  • Alphabetical order: Makes it easier to find your pet by species and/or type.
  • Each row contains identical species: Easier to find your pet by type.
  • Primary stat(s) of each species: Listing the top 2 or single stat of a species to find a match for your playing style and/or situation.
  • Buff, Condition, or Ability icons: Easier time to identify what a pet can offer with their F2 ability without having to select them.

Down below is the proposed change vs the current menu layout.

Adding Torment via Pets:
Torment is a pretty kitten condition. I love it, however, Rangers don’t have access to it without external means. To add it to the class and create diversity in pets, I suggest changing either the Hawk or Eagle to have Torment so both their F2 abilities are not identical.

Why the birds? They excel at connecting attacks on moving targets, so let’s have one of them inflict additional punishment if the target keeps moving.

Addition of the Arid Parasite Devourer:
Personally, I was disappointed to return to the game and seeing new lands to explore (Dry Top and the Silverwastes) but there was no new pet to tame like the Reef Drake when Southsun was introduced.

At the moment, the Devourer is the only -on land- species with 3 different variants while others have 4-5 (including exclusive HOM pets). Would be nice to have one of these guys to charm and have their F2 life-leech to keep them unique – a toned down life leech vs the actual enemy one which hits rather hard.

Reduce Porcine Forage RNG:
As ‘entertaining’ as it can be to see what items you can get from your Porcine during Forage, reduce the amount of items possible down to 2 so it’s a 50/50 or remove RNG completely and allow each Porcine to give a certain item.

This is mostly due to some porcine offering identical items which strip them of their uniqueness (besides appearance) and others, such as the siamoth, offers 2 items that provide the same function (blind & stealth).

Give us a Dolphin.

Do these seem reasonable? Interested on what the community thinks, mostly about a revamped pet menu to be more organized to ease finding a pet, especially for new players.

TL:DR – Organize and revamp the pet menu, add an arid parasite devourer, change either the hawk or eagle’s F2 to inflict Torment, give us a Dolphin.

Sword autoattack solution

The Devs could keep the current auto on sword and add the ability to swap to the normal sword chain other classes have by right-clicking (or whatever) the auto attack chain icon to change our style on the fly.

Should keep both sides are happy and add an extra layer to our class. Beats my previous post of opening up the options menu every time. Maybe alter the normal attack chain so it’s different vs the current – give it pros and cons.

  1. Replace Vigor with Stability in “Fortifying Bond” (master minor)". Vigor does not affect a pet in any way – they don’t have endurance.

Give up on that. It’s been over a year and a half and every time an Anet dev reads that suggestion, the reaction is always the same…

Aspect of the "Pet"

Not sure about 10% on certain stats like Precision and Condition damage. Would those have to be scaled off the current stats of the Ranger or would it be better off adding a flat boost found on signets such as +180 @ Level 80? Maybe tweak the bears to be a -10% incoming damage since Signet of Stone covers toughness.

Also, what about having each pet class provide 2 stat increases/benefits as an Aspect and rework some of the numbers a bit? The last bit of thought would be if the devs considered this, would any traits be added/reworked to accommodate this design?

Conclusion:The CDI is a big PR stunt that will have no relevance in the long run. Anet will continue to do what they have been doing, which is purposely ignoring the design faults of the class and continuing to do low hanging fruit changes

Ever since the devs announced that they were aiming for low-hanging fruit changes, my expectations from them went from expecting minor changes to only getting tool-tip fixes. I guess the CDI was a false glimmer of hope since I started to think that something good could come out from it, but the further I read on the more I’m reverting back to expecting nothing. Come April, we better be getting some awesome tool-tip fixes.

+1 to those suggestions. For the longest time I’ve wondered why Heal as One and Rampage as One weren’t Shouts. As for Troll Unguent as a Survival skill, that seems to only make sense. Lastly, on Healing Spring, maybe instead of having more boon duration on the Regen from Trap Potency it could remove 2 conditions instead of 1 condition every 2 seconds since there’s already a trait that allows for +33% Regen duration applied by the Ranger?

I’m not bothered by people making negative remarks about some suggestions. Some suggestions are indeed inappropriate for different reasons and I’m sure nobody wants to be disrepectful when rejecting them. I also get that people are demotivated because of questionable changes from the past. However, I do not get how the CDI itself is rejected. Why not even make the effort to post a proposal? Why not participate and discuss the things the devs answer to. Why not talk about your concerns?

The CDI will probably not bring the class overhaul everyone is looking for as an invididual. Maybe not even for a larger part of the community. But disregarding the CDI thread and the made proposals and forecasting a bad outcome while not even trying to have an impact oneself is pretty sheepish. Either you care for a class and get your butt moving or you don’t.

Another +1 to you.

As much as I would like to comment on bomb damage in FOTM (seeing that’s my screenshot posted), I rarely do fractals, but when I do, I don’t use my Engineer.

I’m a bit perplexed when reading this thread. Regardless of how the CDI thread is supervised and how much you dis/agree with suggestions people make I do not understand the attitude of sitting it out and judging other peoples suggestions while some of you don’t even participate in the CDI yourself.

Don’t get me wrong, the Ranger thread is awesome. But why does that justify not participating in the CDI thread? If you actually care you should be willing to make the effort and make proposals. What is the point of expressing your opinion here and not in the CDI thread?

I do not main Ranger and I therefore might not be the most qualified person to make proposals for this class. I’m sure quite a view people disagree with ideas I have. Still, I do care enough about my Ranger to contribute proposals and discuss ideas from my point of view. How do you guys expect a satisfying result if you don’t even try to make a difference?

I’d rather they change the Toolkit auto to be like warrior axe auto. If we’re gonna smack stuff around with a wrench, we should be doing it at a faster rate out of frustration due to our kits clipping with our back piece.

Kittens be kittened. That CDI filled up fast and the 200 word limit was breached so many times I’ve lost count. I broke it myself by 79 words. Keep on posting guys, at this point, beat the devs with walls of text!
