It’s not the slow thats useful, but the 66% cooldown increase. Although, the slow is also helpful on ranged/kite fights.

Mobs don’t suffer from cooldowns :| And if some do, it’s still not effective since any cooldowns on mobs are low, resulting at times with some bosses doing the same special move twice in a row at times, couple the issue that a majority of mobs have only one (auto) attack.

You guys are undervaluing chilled way too much, it’s not a useless condition.

It’s not that chill is undervalued, it’s more like chill sees very little use in a majority of dungeon/pve content since Anet doesn’t have enough encounters where the slow would be more useful.

Ice Drake-condition aside take a glance at the dmg of f2 compared to the other drakes.

It’s (F2) damage is the same as the Marsh, Salamander, and Reef (F2) abilities. However tool-tips couldn’t be more spotty in this game. All four of those Drakes’ (F2) abilities are meant to be read as total damage from all 5 attacks landing. Only the River Drake’s (F2) displays damage per attack. Also, the Salamander, Reef, and Ice Drake’s (F2) are frontal cones, not ideal in dungeons to cover multiple targets spread about, even in stacks where targets can completely avoid their breath attack by being inside, beside, or slightly behind the Drake. Marsh’s (F2) being the one exception that does similar damage as the others but can bounce for better coverage on top of poison damage as a bonus. Ice Drake is the worst Drake to bring in dungeons.

No, it’s not true. 2 pets of the same type do not share cooldowns with their skills.

btt: So mainly in dungeons it should be the jungle stalker and a river drake i guess? how about spiders and devourers for range? spiders seem to have a really nice dps.

I would leave that solely to preference. For myself, I swap out pets for each encounter and tend to run two-of-a-kind load out (double cats or drakes, etc). For ranged fights I leave it down to preference as well. Either are fine, with Spiders being my preference for their DPS and extra (F2) effects. Devourers for when I’m not in the mood to manage my pet on bosses that chase and melee since they are pretty much a set-it-and-forget-it pet.

Once you swap a pet during RaO, the new one brought out loses out on the RaO bonus. It’s preferable to keep River Drake out in that example or if you want to squeeze skill management: Marsh Drake F2 > Cast RaO > Swap to River Drake before RaO is applied so that it will apply to your River Drake > River Drake F2. Make sure you cast RaO and swap after 2 or 3 projectiles from Marsh Drake’s F2 connects. But that seems overly complicated for some extra Might lol

Ty for the hints Wondrouswall, helps me a lot. How about the devourers? One does have a nice barrage wich should grant you much might? Also all attacks are 2 hits aren’t they?

Also:

  • What does the Jaguar grant more than the Jungle Stalker?
  • Why Ice Drake? Chill isn’t that great in PvE.
  • What does a Lynx grant? It seems to be like any cat, just with lower stats – why??
  • Fern hound heal is really low imo. Is it worth using? :/
  • How about the devourers? One does have a nice barrage wich should grant you much might? Also all attacks are 2 hits aren’t they?

Yes, in those situations where a ranged pet is favorable, a Devourer will have much better synergy with Rampage As One. If the Devourer is only using auto attack they can sustain a constant peak between 10-12 stacks of might, with Quickening Zephyr 16-18 stacks (similar result even with Lashtail using it’s (F2) Rending Barbs).

  • What does the Jaguar grant more than the Jungle Stalker?

If running two cats, Jaguar is always a must for your 2nd slot. Again, since their (F2) gives them +25% critical chance as well as stealth to avoid aggro. Pair it’s F2 and RaO with QZ and for 6 seconds it will do more damage than other cats, especially with Pet’s Prowess trait. If going for straight single-target damage, swap to Jaguar before casting RaO to get the most out of it.

  • What does a Lynx grant? It seems to be like any cat, just with lower stats – why??

Lynx has the same stats as the other cats, none of which are lower. As I said above, when Might stacks are covered by the party, I prefer using the Lynx for a controlled Leap Finisher via it’s (F2) ability to heal itself when a water field is present. Players leap into water fields to heal, I might as well bring a DPS cat that can do the same. Also the (F2) on the Lynx hits twice and hits harder than its Bite move while retaining its DPS without any loss whatsoever. Again, when Might stacks are covered by the party, use a Lynx > Jungle Stalker since its (F2) Mighty Roar won’t be seeing any use.

  • Why Ice Drake? Chill isn’t that great in PvE.

Its cone chill isn’t great. If running a Drake or double Drakes, the preference is always River Drake (1st) and if slotting a 2nd Drake, Marsh Drake. The bounce off their (F2) abilities increases their DPS against multiple targets and blast-finisher on swap that also weakens foes is a plus. If using Drakes underwater I’d only take the Reef for its Feedback bubble. Frost Drake for looks though.

No comment on the Fern Hound.

Just wanted to mention that birds hit twice and therefore grant double might with the elite.

elite synchro

This is incorrect. The attack rate of birds, specifically that one of their moves applies swiftness (no hit) and one attack every 8 seconds hits only once doesn’t make them the best candidate with Rampage As One: Cats are still the most optimal choice during Rampage since they can sustain the might better, even with 2 of their attacks striking once and one attack that attacks twice. Test it yourself.

Having a flat boon duration of 0%, during Rampage As One, Birds were only able to sustain 7 stacks of might, with Quickening Zephyr their peak was 10 stacks. Rampage As One was also activated after the birds used their swiftness move for more optimal results. Cats on the other hand were able to sustain 8 stacks of might, with Quickening Zephyr used their peak was at 11 stacks.

For dungeons, cats are still more effective than birds, DPS and Rampage As One-wise. I’d also add Jaguar and Lynx to your list for best pets. Lynx > Jungle Stalker when Might is covered, Jaguar is preferable with Rampage As One + Quickening Zephyr DPS synergy since it’s Stalk (F2) gives it +25% critical chance (not listed on tool-tip).

Edit: The main quote isn’t what I’m trying to debate, not the best selection since birds do hit twice on the auto/F2. Post was for the Birds with Rampage elite.

Yeah, the bird leap not being on demand is my only issue. As for party comps that can max vulnerability, either are a good choice. Personal preference still makes me wanna use double cats since it can usually sustain 3 stacks of vulnerability on its own. Would still keep the Jaguar in one slot though, the F2 is pretty nice. I’ll give the birds a plus tho for their auto being at 300 range, usually outside of enemy cleave, but they usually screw themselves using their leap attack and never pull back out to 300 range.

Thing is the birds will do the aoe swiftness move that lowers its dps. That’s about the only thing holdings birds “slightly” back in DPS as far as a stand-still target is concerned. Vulnerability lets your peeps do more damage, so the cats are a better choice (in dungeons) since it comes on its auto. As for the Lynx F2 vs the Hawk/Eagle F2, I only recommend it as a bonus for having it leap into water fields to heal itself a bit, if it was fine then I wouldn’t use F2.

EDIT: I don’t use pets in dungeons for their condition damage, so I have no comment on that.

you did know that the bear take 2 conditions off 5 allies, and that the activation time (0.5 seconds) is almost instant, making it a VERY reliable skill. Not to mention low CD.

Mighty Roar takes 3 seconds to activate. THREE SECONDS of the pet being rooted. If it is damaged or you move out of its tiny tiny range within those 3 seconds, you loose the might.

Red moa has next to NO dps. Last night, i tested if it would use its healing cry similar to how drakes using their blast finisher (set pet to avoid combat, then tell them to attack manually). It does not, instead it waits and astonashing 50 seconds after initiating combat, to use the heal. Resulting in a few coyotes almost killing my poor ranger (i ran zerker).
Red moa fury does NOT work with compassion training (tested and reported it in the bugfix section many times over, nothing happens). Thus it will NEVER grant more then 14 seconds.

Pet boon duration does NOT scale with player boon duration. So while the tooltip reads “Fury 19.5 seconds”, you will still only get 14 seconds.
Moa DPS is laughable.

Mighty Roar for pre-stacking Might in those parties that don’t stack Might (very little or at all). Most dungeon fights are melee, no worries about being outside of range unless everyone is spread out ranging – at that point, different pet.

Red Moa, or Moas in generally have the 3rd highest dps behind Felines (1st) and Birds (2nd). The moa heal can also be used on command by swapping to the moa (pocket moa trick) during combat – it lowers its DPS but the heal + fury the Red Moa provides is gold. Because chances are if your party comp needs more fury than what Warhorn can provide, they might also need the kitten heal as well.

As for the OP and the dungeon setup, I’d also recommend in organized groups that DO stack might to drop Jungle Stalker for the Lynx since the Stalker will no longer be needed. Same way with Red Moa if party-wide fury is covered. Top that Lynx F2 (same as snow leopard’s) doesn’t bug as much so it’s an added benefit to have it F2 Leap into a water field for a heal while doing its burst DPS. As for the Brown Bear, the only place I use it is on the skips in TA since it can cleanse the poison from blossoms on your party during resting spots between skips – that’s it.

Removing the ICD and changing it to heal on crit (at half the heal maybe?) would make it worth bringing.

would limit the spirit usage to PvE and crazy zerker people.

Instead, they could flat out reduce the passive healing to 600, does not scale with healing power or medic bonus. 33% chance of proc regardless of traits and 2second ICD to make it in line with other proc on attack/crit heals.

Adding a shorter ICD would open it to all modes instead of limiting it to PvE and the “crazy zerker” people because right now it’s useful no where. It also should be kept to work with Vigorous Spirits… that just goes without saying.

1st point: Yeah. Jungle Stalker’s F2 will usually bug out usually when it’s moving. Wait for it be idle before using F2.

2nd point: Yep. Safest way to ensure it hits is F1 the target, let it get 1 attack in and then use F2.

3rd point: I don’t come across many Axe/Axe Rangers and the ones that I have also used a Shortbow on the other set so I’m not sure what to tell you here. Might be some sort of WvW build they’re using in Dungeons. Ranger class seems to be synonymous with players that like to use WvW builds in dungeons.

4th point: Keep playing with Frost Spirit. The instant that Anet makes Frost Spirit “unbugged” with a 10-second ICD is the day the Ranger class for Dungeons can be put to rest forever.

Well this is almost the top of the top. 8k bombs means 25 stacks might, 25 stacks vulnerability, a light armored enemy aswell bufffood and 25 stacks bloodlust. I guess that would result in even a bit more, I guess its about 15-20 stacks of what I just mentioned.

Unbuffed bombs will crit for about 3.5k. With maties in general 4-6k.

Close. The bombs done to the cafeteria golem were done with moderate vulnerability on the him at the time, average 15-18 stacks. Might stacks was consistent between 15-18. At the time I was using 80 Power / 60 Precision food with 0 stacks of Bloodlust. My unbuffed bombs do roughly 3.5-4k crits and with PUGs/Unorganized groups, I usually see 5k+ bombs but rarely in 6k range. Build is also old since I now moved those 10 points from Alchemy into Tool for Static Discharge (or Speedy Kits on skips/runs). Been getting a bit more 9k hits on bombs now, especially when I have full stacks of Bloodlust. Very underrated class, indeed.

@motherbox.5493: I use Sigil of the Night in night dungeons and Force during the day time ones + typical Scholar Runes. Playstyle usually starts with buffing party before the fight with Might, usually 18 stacks, then doing a dodge roll to drain my endurance for 5% extra damage from Empowering Adrenaline. When Endurance is not full that’s when I use my rifle 3 and 5 bursts. If the fight keeps going on (usually bosses) I stack 6 Might with Healer & Rifle for rotation, then cooldowns are done for another 18 Might stack mid-fight if it goes that far. Always remember to dodge roll before your rifle bursts or use the bursts after you’ve dodged – helps your DPS a bit bursting for 30k+. Also remember to use (if you take) Static Discharge, assuming you’re taking Rifle Turret in you’re loadout, when you’re bursting on your rifle – does more damage than if you have a kit on. I use Surprise Shot midair during Rifle Jump since you’re locked in an animation anyways, might as well press the “FX” key.

I can only speak for PvE where he is an awesome teammate: Most engis A.) don’t know what they are doing or B.) are annoyed by grenades. And sometimes even C.) they know what to do, but forget about their skills and just keep spamming a skill.

Seriously I rarely see a random engi use his fields, spreading heal and 15 stacks might. I know just one engi that does that – a friend of mine. But randoms? No, just annoying dps suckers with rifle and elixiers or dual pistol condition fuzzies …

Yup. Doesn’t help the rep of the class (from a dungeon perspective) when most engineers just camp grenade kit. Also, toss in the ones that use flame thrower that mostly obstructs the rest of the party’s vision on telegraphed moves or double-pistol condition spammers hitting with the power of a pea-shooter and using selfish elixirs – and not even tossing them. I too can say I have yet to party with another engineer that stacks might, uses fields, or spreads heals. Engineers that know how to play their class while adding utility to a party are rare like sword/warhorn/spotter/frost spirit (traited) Rangers – probably even rarer.

Currently using a tweaked version of those. Higher DPS and burst with Bombs & Rifle for encounters where one can live without Vigor by keeping Explosive Powder & Forceful Explosives on the Explosives traitline but slotting in Empowering Adrenaline. Also, keeping Precise Sights and Modified Ammunition in Firearms but slotting in Rifle Mod for the Blunderbuss and Rifle Jump. I do agree Storm Spirit is lacking, however, seeing how lightning is used in this game I would probably rework and alter somethings around with Sun and Storm Spirit.

Perhaps change Storm Spirit to buff players with a chance to inflict 3 seconds of blindness on hit, while giving Storm Spirit’s “Call Lightning” and additional AOE Blind and changing Sun Spirit’s “Solar Flare” AOE Blind into an AOE Burn.

[PvE] Revising the "DPS Meta"

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Wondrouswall.7169

Wondrouswall.7169

We are trying to take steps to address some of the dominance of Berserker/DPS players. More info next week, I think.

Jon

The dominance of Berserker/DPS is because of the WEAKNESS of other archetypes, not the strength of Berserker/DPS. So long as you and the rest of the balance team remain cognizant of that, whatever changes you make will be good. We do want condition builds to be good in PvE. We also would like you to completely get rid of Defiant stacks and use some other means of control reduction (give bosses stability when they use a skill or something, so that there is counterplay and we can remove the stability to CC them, for instance) so that control builds like Hammer Guardian/Warrior are useful in PvE. These sorts of changes will be welcome and wonderful for the PvE meta, and will also not hurt the direct damage players, which is good and helps keep things paced appropriately for speed clears.

The biggest change I think that can help condition damage dealers in PvE is to, in general, reduce the HP of enemy mobs and increase their Toughness. In this way, condition damage does greater percent damage over time, whereas if you tailor the enemy stats appropriately direct damage percent damage over time will be unchanged. This would be an optimal approach that helps all schools of thought.

But please, whatever you do, don’t nerf Berserker/DPS builds heavily! If you do that, you just slow down the game’s action, and you will alienate and damage countless players, and shoot yourself in the foot.

Giving us a choice to make.

Out of everything you wrote, that last line sticks out the most. The people that wear gear for DPS made that choice, the people that don’t have made theirs as well. There is a consequence for everything. What you have suggested solves nothing. Think of a solution rather than flipping the tables.

20 second cooldown for a 3 second block, 1200 range pull, a bar that hits like a truck, nails to slow down pursuers/mobs, and a toolbelt that boomerangs a wrench with decent DPS while stacking vulnerability… I like it.

^ What Bambula said and add on to the vids and so forth. Man, I gotta run 20/25/0/25 again, but I can’t depend on PUGs to give me stability when I need it QQ I like it when they carry me ;D also im picky about using RaO for stability, I want guards to give me it. GIVE IT TO ME!!

[PVX][Ranger] Fortifying Bond and Pet traits

in Profession Balance

Just some low-hanging fruit suggestions.

  • Fortifying Bond: Vigor replaced with Stability
Would like to see this the most since pets have no use for Vigor and benefit more from Stability.
  • Speed Training: Reduces recharge on pet skills by 20% (increased from 10%)
Most recharge reductions are 20%, I find it odd pets are excluded from it. Can’t hurt too much to let pets do some of their moves a couple of seconds faster.

The next few suggestions are to make traits available for all pets so selection can be limited to their utilities/stats rather than a combination of utilities/stats and traits.

  • Rending Attacks: Pets inflict bleeds on critical hit with their basic attacks (currently limited to Drakes, Felines, Devourers, and the Shark)
  • Stability Training: Pets gain stability when disabled (currently limited to Ursines, Porcines, and the Armor Fish)
  • Intimidation Training: Pets cause cripple on critical hit with their basic attacks, 15-second cooldown (currently limited to Canines and Spiders and bound to the F2 activation)

NOTE: I was not sure how to pass this one so I’m suggesting to keep the cripple duration (5 seconds) and limit it to the basic attack and proc on a critical hit. Keeping it bound to F2 might be too clunky for some pets. Also, adding an internal cooldown of perhaps 15 seconds to match Predator’s Instinct which is 10 seconds of cripple with a 30 second cooldown (cooldown length of 3x the base cripple duration) to keep it in check.

  • Instinctual Bond is moved to Master Tier and Loud Whistle moved to Adept Tier
The last one is perhaps to open up some avenues for Rangers not wanting to invest too heavily in Beastmastery. All about diversifying, right, Anet?
