I’m wondering why people take time to post on forums. Anet doesn’t respond, do anything that is asked, or help those that need.

Not responding is not the same as not listening. There have been many implementations and fixes thanks to the feedback on these forums. If ANet does not address a post it may be because its so low on their priority list. That priority list is probably not the same as ours.

Now if ESO had been B2P like GW2, it might have been competition. But not when they want to charge you $60 for the box with $15 a month on top of that and a cash-shop.

See: World of Warcraft. (which had 7.8 million subscribers as of December 31st)
Next expansion will be $50. It’s still got a $15/mo subscription AND a cash shop.

7.8 is more than twice the “over 3 million GW2 copies sold”.
And that’s people that are still actively subscribed. Not just people that bought the game.

WoW has been out for YEARS and has developed a strong playerbase that worked so hard to get their gear and rewards. They don’t want to lose it all so they’re obligated to pay and play. I know, because I was one of them until I just didn’t care anymore. It was painful to see my characters go but I had to do it. ESO, however, is a new MMO and has a sub-fee as well as the 60$ box just like WoW. It won’t do so good I’m afraid.

I honestly WISH there was something for us to do but I recently convinced my friend to get GW2 so I’m kind of glad its quiet now so he doesnt miss too much more. I hooked him by retelling the events of Living Story season 1. So don’t screw this up ANet! You’ve been slowly proving that you’re learning how to make LS better, make season 2 the best yet!

As long as NCSOFT gets a cut of the sales from Kongzhong, they don’t care…

Says who? Who’s to say ANet or NCSoft teams aren’t upset about it? You know there’s virtually nothing they can do other than, as said before, plead “please don’t.”

What kind of developer forces these setting on their players?
I just started playing FFXIV ARR and they have a setting where I can adjust everyone elses spell effects. I can even turn them all completely off! This. Is. Awesome.
Never miss a dodge again.

I don’t know why we aren’t getting an official response specifically addressing spell clutter. Would allowing players to reduce it make the game too easy, because dodging was meant to be artificially difficult due to spell clutter blocking boss telegraphs? Can a developer look at the screenshots below and genuinely say they can tell what is going on? For a game that is marketed on dynamic combat and “play the game, not the UI”, it is an utter failure that this issue which players have been complaining about since beta has gone on deaf ears—even Colin’s post in this thread avoided it.

Anet may not want to tell you all this, but this is something hard coded into the game code.

Thats why they are having trouble simply removing the large particle effects.

They have to dig deep into the code, which cost large sum of money to fix these issues when its something that deeply programmed into the code of the game.

Particle generation is a fairly straightforward system in games. Not sure what you are talking about to be honest.

The only “coding” they would have to invest in is a system that automatically scales effects down in large fights. One that works much better than their current solution.

And seeing as how they implemented the LOD checkbox with a fixed value for scaling back particles, I’m sure they could increase that. Or, again, give us the OPTION.

Imersion breakers

It’s quite easy to take aggro from NPCs… I can understand a few guards dying but to have them all wipe while you’re there? That’s just bad awareness lol. As far as immersion breakers go:

1. Some of the buildings look like they were scaled poorly even for their own races. I feel like the cities and homes are just scenery – not because they ARE and you can’t walk into certain buildings, but because my character wouldn’t comfortably fit into some of them lol.

2. The fact that each zone is a square or rectangle with arbitrary walls (usually steep hills/mountains that keep you from going out of bounds. I WISH that GW2 was truly open-world but I think it has to do with the amount of events in each zone. I think DE’s would break if it was all open-world. Just opening the world map and zooming out makes me cringe because the zones are so awkwardly squared.

Those are probably the worst culprits for me.

There are a TON of great suggestions on these forums, even ones that WP mentions, and they go unanswered. Why should ANet pay more attention to someone because they made a video? If they did, the forums would probably be up in arms saying that ANet only listens to youtubers and no one in the forums. I agree with a lot of WP’s points though and am subbed to him.

What is does is start to reduce the amount of particles and details on effects once you have a certain # of them on screen. This system relies on us manually setting up a value for how noisy any given effect is so if turning it on does nothing in certain areas, we could simply not have set those effects up correctly…
Jon

Why not set up varying values for how noisy effects are and let US decide to either have them at OVERKILL (current setting) or COMPLETELY off? Same with the UI customization. Why are Devs seemingly restricting player options?

Every single time someone has a complaint on this forum the solution is to “give us an option to toggle it on/off”, so that way everybody’s happy. If the devs did that every time someone suggested it, do you know how ridiculously cluttered the options menu would be?

Have you played other MMOs? Their options menus are nowhere near cluttered yet they implement such features. Final Fantasy XIV being a PRIME example for particle effects. And your last question is silly, of course if ANet implemented EVERY SINGLE feature asked for then the game would become unplayable even. However, this issue is a very key one that is causing the enjoyment level of this game to go way down for MANY people. Have you even read the rest of the posts on here? Take a look at the screenshots of particles covering the entire screen and tell me if that looks good to you.

They’ve also recently put out the Living Story Atlas(good in theory, really bad execution) that is kind of a “The Story So Far” detailing the events of past living story releases.. My concern is that there isn’t really at present an In-Game way to get players caught up…. This is important..

Suggestion – A Hall of Monuments style Scrying Pool that allows you to see scenes from previous living story events – people could get the information that way.

Omg a scrying pool would be excellent for this!

I understand what you’re saying OP and I DO miss those quests. It made you feel more involved in what was going on. Even in Elder Scrolls Online one quest can link into the next and unravel an entire scenario and makes you feel immersed. However, the heart quests are anything but immersive. They’re meant to be completed without reading text mostly and feel more like a road bump rather than a story-telling mechanic.

I’m going to try and not spoil this living world story and at the same time express my concern so bear (bare? beir?) with me…

Possible spoilers, going to try and avoid as much as possible
So it seems that Scarlet’s interaction with Tyria has led to a MAJOR development for the main story of this game. This worries me. At first I thought the living world story would be a sort of side-mission like the Bonus Mission Packs in GW1 but now it seems like its the device from which ANet will link us to the next big thing.

How are late-comers going to find out about the next “big boss”? Will the Battle for LA and previous content be available for them in an instance/dungeon or will they just have to watch cut-scenes and Let’s Plays of previous Living Stories on YouTube? I would think that the next “big boss” would come in an expansion and would be re-playable like our personal stories. Any thoughts? ANet: any comments?

So what if there hasn’t been a hetero romance in the main story. This new romance is really the only active relationship anyways since Caithe and Faolan have only been introduce as exes.

Who care what gender the partners in the romance are anyways. The story and romance itself are really well done and if it wasn’t for culture shock over two girls kissing, there wouldn’t be any of this complaining going on.

You missed the point. It’s not about a kiss or embrace or 10 seconds of a cutscene… Posters brought up valid arguments concerning the poor treatment of key character relationships (even the lesbian sylvari one). Kasmeer and Marj are side characters. It is strange that ANet decided to bring them into the spotlight and have their relationship develop further than the others, especially given whats going on in the real world right now. That’s why it seems like a fan-service to me, not much care was taken with these side-characters. However that’s opinion. The writing was hit and miss for me.

But if you wish to view this post through a narrow cone then sure.

Hmmm I see what you mean. However, I don’t think that it’s necessarily wrong to not be 100% comfortable with such things. And yah I agree it seems like every time a patch hits its all negative from these forums but when I saw the ending cutscene it really wiped away all the little things that irked me about this patch. Music of Guild Wars 1 vs Guild Wars 2

Huh, I may be in the minority but I believe that the music in GW2 is on par with GW1 and compliments it rather well. Jeremy Soule really recaptured many of the subtle sounds and melodies from the first game that made them so memorable. I also truly appreciate the fact that music from the first GW is also mixed into some areas of GW2. Brings back such nostalgia and gives a familiar feeling to a world that has changed so much in the last 200+ years!

It seems to me like I hear much more of GW1’s music than original GW2 stuff.

Wonder if it has to do with starting areas. I switch between my characters a lot and I’ve heard a few GW1 tracks but mostly GW2.

Well, honestly, it feels like ArenaNet is trying to cut every connection this game had to original Guild Wars.

They are barely giving Guild Wars 2 any core features original Guild Wars had, and they are making it more and more similar to a traditional MMO.

- That’s because GW2 is korean style MMO, which is quite different from MTG style team co-op game the first Guild Wars was. They chose to call it “Guild Wars 2” because the name has brand value and a lot of the customers bought the game thinking it would be similar to Guild Wars.

Brand value, and not to mention that they are telling stories within the same universe as the first game.

Sooo… are we like voting on this? If so then…

1.) Guild Wars – Great idea and I agree. I wouldn’t be surprised if ANet is actually already working on this.

2.) Guild Halls (IN THE WORKS BY GW2 STAFF) – This is just as important as having Guild V Guild. Big YES from me! It was a lot of fun in GW1 to have a home for the Guild!

3.) (VOTED OUT BY PEOPLES!) Cosmetic Mounts – I agree, NO mounts please. Waypoints are already enough. Even if some are contested, you can waypoint to nearest location and take a SHORT run.

4.) Lots of player events in WvW – Great idea! Give people a sense of direction and objectives besides “run in zerg and kill anything you see”. =P

5.) (VOTED OUT BY THE PEOPLES) WvW weapons and champs – Need more info on what this means but it was voted out apparently so nevermind.

6.) Mini Battles – Wouldn’t hurt but as long as ANet doesn’t dedicate TOO much of their focus on this.

7.) More Mini – More minis sounds good to me!

8.) Gambling – This seems kind of random to me to place into the game, but it wouldn’t hurt I guess. I’m indifferent.

9.) Build Templates – OMG YERS!!! This was amazing in GW1!

10.) Activities Tab – Indifferent, but couldn’t hurt to have it.

11.) Guild Capes – Agreed, but add capes IN GENERAL. Not just Guild Capes.

12.) DC Re-queue for dungeons – Agreed, very quality-of-life item.

I would like to ADD one more to the list if I may… 13. Personal Armory – A collection of all your skins and armor you’ve collected! It’s SUCH a pain having to choose one over the other. Once you use a skin, that’s it. You can’t have more than one unless you craft or buy that piece of armor again and re-apply a skin. SO ANNOYING!!!

If naval battle was introduced to GW2, we would be riding along on a flat calm, and it would be pretty boring if you ask me. I’ve noticed that no one talks about this issue anymore. Is everyone just okay with not being able to see what they’re attacking in a large group? This patch has yet AGAIN shown the ugly side of Guild Wars 2’s particle effects. It’s over-kill.

As melee, I couldn’t see ANY of the champs or elites I was attacking, so I wound up dead very quickly since I couldn’t see what I was attacking or when they were possibly about to do a big attack that I should have dodged. I even set character limits to the lowest and while my FPS was awesome, all I saw on my screen were abstract arrangements of blue, white and yellow. It was very pretty but got old very fast. Eventually I switched to a rifle and my fun and enjoyment were reduced to: Hit Tab -> Mash all skills.

ANet Team: Please give us some sort of slider to lower the amount of particle effects. You were supposedly working on this a long time ago, any update on that? Forgot the dev’s name but he said that the game would be smart about reducing the particle effects. I still think it would be better to give us a slider to let us decide ourselves.

Hello, just came back to the game after a long hiatus because I was excited about this patch. So the cutscene blows me away and I’m pumped and ready to jump in! Talked to the camp director then headed to LA. Once I got inside I was in AWE at how I couldn’t exactly tell where I was, it was so demolished! So I tried panning my camera around to gaze at the glorious destruction… and Immediately remembered why I stopped playing this marvelous game.

The camera is way too restrictive. I nearly tilted my head sideways because my character kept getting in the way of my camera. Wish we had a First Person Camera! Not only that, but I would LOVE to post screen shots of the awesome things we were doing in a zerg, but most of the screenshots would be of me staring at the ground.

ANet please for the love of Dwayna! Give us more camera options! ATLEAST increase zoom distance if you hate the idea of an FOV slider! Also, it would be great if our cameras weren’t positioned center mass on our characters.

Never heard that saying before but in all honesty whoever started that saying doesn’t have a basic understanding of how game engines can have certain obstacles to even the simplest of ideas.

Functionally, first person in MMO’s is useless.

It is good for taking screenshots (most of my GW1 screens were first persons of the environment, so beautiful)

But it is inferior for any kind of combat as long as third person exists at the same time in the game.

- Impossible to see your surroundings
- Harder to interpret the battlefield
- Harder to judge distances of enemies and range for ranged attacks

Imagine fighting a 50v50 zerg fight in first person, the FPS drop from all the close up skill effects alone would be brutal, but you wouldn’t be able to see any of what is going on, and running through other players like clouds would look ridiculous.

Imagine fighting a thief while you’re in first person. The noob would be abusing perma stealth, and you’d never find him again. Same issue with mesmer.

I don’t have an issue with first person combat, but the game has to be built for it, GW2 and almost every MMO is simply built for third person.

I have never taken a screenshot in this game. I simply look around and take in the scenery. Problem is that I have to wrestle with the camera to get my character out of the way when I’m trying to take in the world. This should not be. In every MMO I play, I like to switch to first person from a high location and scan the area. It’s quite the experience especially when its a world as beautiful as Tyria.

We’re not asking for a Skyrim first person view with arm and weapon animations. Just a rudimentary first person camera that lets us see the world with nothing obstructing our sight. As stated before, the DEVs have this tool, so why not flip the switch ON for the players if they want to use it?

Also, the camera needs to have a no clip feature so that it doesn’t spas out when hitting the tiniest of objects. This is insanely frustrating especially for jumping puzzles.

Some people are posting about their own preference being NOT to play in first person view, but would adding it HURT their experience? I think not. It would just give the rest of us more options to enjoy the game. Also, I really think the camera distance should be increased. GW2 Camera - Post FOV Fix [Not Quite Fixed]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: X The Manimal.5293

X The Manimal.5293

Keep in mind there are two different things here:

1) Maximum camera distance from player. Usually we’d call this the “zoom” though that’s not really the right word.
2) Field of View, the angle of vision captured by the lens of the camera.

More FoV lets you see more of the world without really making your character smaller. More camera distance lets you move your camera up higher so that you, the player, are smaller.

For the boss encounters, you definitely get more camera distance. I think the FoV increases slightly as well (leading to a weird bending effect as the camera moves out and widens its FOV) but I’m not 100% sure on that.

I still think those are the smaller problems with the camera. As you mentioned in the original post, it’s the camera getting caught on things that’s far more frustrating.

Correct, the FOV and Camera distance are entirely different things. I believe that all that’s left is camera distance increase since they already increased the FOV from the launch setting. My overall disappointment is with the lack of choice given to the player to choose what FOV and Camera distance they would rather play with to enjoy the game comfortably.

People sometimes use the word “zerg” as a negative, but I love it to be honest. Hate feeling all alone in an MMO. However, ANet needs to fix the terrible lag.

General rule of thumb for me is that any hack or mod that is not openly supported by the developer of an MMO, is a ban-worthy offense. In the case of WoW, add-ons are very supported and are part of the game’s menu.

I created a new Asura the other day and when the boss encounter started the FOV increased a great deal and seemed to zoom out my camera as well. THAT is what I believe ANet should leave up to us! Why take that control away from the player? That’s what I would like ANet to answer in all honesty. They obviously know that in boss encounters their default camera and FOV are not enough but it’s also not enough for us to view the EVEN BIGGER world! =/

Maybe if you make an asura… The camera is better for then.

Asura fixes some of the issues, but adds a whole new set of them. For instance, your camera is literally a foot off the ground, which makes a lot of stuff harder, especially trying to look up.

This. I have also ran into an issue where the camera would sporadically zoom in and out again while jumping up certain platforms to reach a vista in the starting zone for Asuras. This pops up again in other maps as well with similar jumps. The weird thing is that there is nothing behind my character that would make my camera do this. It’s a real head-scratcher. Not to mention I love my Charr more than my Asura lol.

I would greatly enjoy being able to zoom out more+have an FoV slider. I generally play fairly zoomed out with the FoV set to 90-100, so I feel rather constrained this game, even when on my Guardian (which is an Asuran).

I am quite against “hacking” games to gain an unfair advantage but I’ll admit I used an FOV hack a while back to set my FOV to about 75-80 and OMG what a difference! I stayed logged in for almost 5 straight hours because I was having such a great time! However, once I logged out and back the next day it no longer worked and now I haven’t played the game since.

I see others are having the same gripe but are able to continue playing anyway. I wish I could do the same. I wonder how many more out there are also pushing through the annoyance/pain. I just couldn’t do it anymore and I’m willing to get my account banned for using a hack if it means I can play this game remotely comfortably. Otherwise GW2 is collecting virtual dust lol.

Thanks for the replies guys, good to feel I’m not alone in this. I would think this falls under “quality of life” and that ANet would still be working on this to improve it. Maybe not enough people are still vocal about it like before.

(Wanted to see if I could get a Dev response for this but also wondering if anyone else is still suffering from this even after the FOV increase that ANet implemented.)

For a while now I’ve been jumping into GW2 to try out the new patches only to log out within seconds. I simply could not stand the low FOV and limited camera zoom even after the FOV increase. I feel like I’m playing the game while staring at the ground most of the time.

I believe this could easily be fixed by allowing us to zoom out more. Currently the camera severely limits the experience because in most cases you’re staring more at the ground than the horizon and sky just to see what’s in front of you. If you try to position your camera to see the horizon, it ends up getting caught on the smallest of objects and gets very agitating. The camera seems to be fixed towards the middle of your character which also adds to this weird feeling. I loathe having to run into a cave or tight spaces where the camera gets obscured so much by any little object or wall. It’s very frustrating.

I bought the collector’s edition for the bad-kitten Rytlok but also because I really believe in ANet’s vision and can see the potential with everything they implement but until this is resolved, I just can’t force myself to play this way.

A question to Devs: Are there game-engine or programming limitations to allowing more customization to the camera and player perspective? The FOV increase was a step in the right direction, but I strongly urge you to consider increasing the zoom distance as well.

It is highly unlikely that this is a bug-beta test but rather a stability one.
If they put it on with millions of people using it at the same time and it crashes they won’t really be able to test much at all.

Releasing it slowly would make it possible to adjust the servers and system in order to accommodate the whole player base gradually, rather than just having everyone crash it at once.

How can you really get a stability test out with a small percent of people out of…millions? Half might not even play actively and half of that might not even have a use for it? Still…weeks until a full release.

It’s like trying to see how many people fit into a small boat before it capsizes. You can’t start by dumping tons of people into the boat because it will likely capsize right away and you’ll have learned nothing. You’ve gotta ease a few in at a time first or you’ll never know what the current “tipping point” is. They need data to work with.
