Tad late but... Cut-scenes!

X The Manimal.5293

I like going back to a more dynamic cutscene style that stays within the world, but to be honest I still felt disconnected from the Living Story ones for a different reason: that my character was completely excluded from interaction. You don’t do anything in them but stand back and watch, and maybe it’s just me but it always breaks my connection to what’s going on because then I don’t feel like my character even actually exists in the world. I’m just a tack-on, and I know the lore won’t ever remember me but I’d like to at least be a part of the present. The previous cutscene style did tend to break the mood, and really slowed things down, but at least my character was actually a part of it, being addressed and talking and observing. I didn’t feel so distant from what was happening.

Hmmm very good point. I guess that we have a voice on our personal stories because that was recorded and coded from launch. I think that no matter your appearance, there was a generic male and female voice for everyone. They must’ve not had much time or resources to do voice-acting for this particular event or those same voice actors weren’t available… not sure. Hopefully in future content they give us our voice back lol.

I guess I’m just excited because ANet has shown how malleable the game is. GW2’s structure and mechanics are pretty kitten flexible and have shown that off with the halloween tower jumping puzzle and the Super Adventure Box to name a few. Can’t wait to see the game grow even more.

I must admit that I had dropped GW2 for other games around the time that this whole Flame and Frost event started. I watched some Youtube video guides for the event just today and couldn’t help but notice….. ANet finally changed the way they do cut-scenes! Right?

The ones I saw were great! No jarring disconnection from the world around you. I hope ANet keeps this format. It’s much better than before when it was only two characters on screen at a time with a painted moving background.

+1 EXCEPT for the Guild Missions/Challenges part. How can you have a casual guild and expect to be able to unlock and conquer the same content as a full-fledged guild? I myself have a small casual guild mostly made up of friends I know IRL, I don’t consider us a real guild at all. More like a few players who stick together and just bought a guild name to have a Guild bank.

To begin with there shouldn’t have been a big problem making smaller missions for smaller guilds with smaller rewards. I haven’t seen a single person in a small guild who wants the same rewards from small missions, just people tossing that straw man out. Even if it means that a 5 man guild can run one small mission a week and we each get one rare, I’d just be happy that we can do it.

Hmmm, I gotta say I agree. Still though, I figured (before the content released) that small guilds would not be able to unlock much. So I guess for me it’s not as much of a bummer lol.

X The Manimal.5293

I’m another long time Guild Wars 1 player, who likes Guild Wars 2 more.

First of all, you can only really compare Guild Wars 2 to Prophecies at launch. At this point in it’s development, Factions wasn’t out yet. And a lot of people seem to be comparing four games with one. Take away professions like the Rit, sin and dervish and see how many people are still saying Guild Wars 1 was much better. Certainly not as many PVe people.

25 missions, no hard mode. That’s what you had. And the mission bonuses were annoying and story breaking in some cases. Many were badly done (particularly in Nightfall).

Sorrow’s Furnace and hard mode weren’t there at launch. There weren’t 8 dungeons. There wasn’t five races and starting areas. And though the personal story is uneven, some of them are pretty good (while others are not). That being said, there are only so many times I could play through pre, even though some people loved it. At least here I have five zones to play around in.

I did like the skill system in Guild Wars 1 and loved making builds. It was my favorite part of the game. But it wasn’t enough to compensate for the incredible lack of necessary game functions, like marketplaces and jumping. The last thing I wanted to do was stand around Spamadan all day, trying to sell a bunch of stuff, instead of playing.

There was plenty wrong with Guild Wars 1. It was still one of the best games of its time but I think too many people remember it with rose-colored glasses on, and even more, many are comparing the full range of games that appear over a couple of years with what we’re seeing in Guild Wars 2 after six months.

In two years, I think this game is going to rock.

Wow, best post. I agree 100%.

I think that Anet needs to start a process very soon that frees up the names that are taken by inactive accounts

Such a bad idea. Do you realize the kind of kitten storm that would be created? I can see the headlines now: “ANet threatening to confiscate character names if players don’t login at least once a month”. It would make ANet look like they’re only doing it to keep their players on-at-one-time numbers up. I recommend just being more creative with your names. This happens in MMOs a lot. Not sure if this was your first MMO, but i’d get used to it lol.

Why is the tone and style of GW2 so "goofy"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

X The Manimal.5293

ANet has some great top-notch writers but it seems this time around they didn’t want to make it ALL doom and gloom. I can’t remember a single time I chuckled while playing vanilla GW. It was always a dire situation filled with dread, death, and terrible acts against humanity (bloodstone anyone?). Still though, this made it all the better and more uplifting to become ascended and take the fight BACK to the enemy.

GW2 is a great change of tone with the familiar lore I’ve grown up with. I’ve chuckled so many times playing this game just hearing the NPCs around cities and in personal story. It also has its downer moments but it seems to try and sustain a more noble and heroic feeling.

You guys probably never even tried the weapon swap glitch. It was a lot of fun to do when you were just hanging out in LA or something. It didn’t have any effect on gameplay, and removing it only made the people who liked to use it sad. The people who didn’t use it probably didn’t even know it existed, so why would it even bother them?

Not all glitches need to be fixed. There are sometimes happy accidents.

I tried it and it was cool for the first 5 seconds. Then I moved on. Glad its fixed because it can be used to annoy people. The chainsaw sword would loop its sound file over, and over, and over, and OVER. Thank you ANet.

Wouldn't a taunt mechanic be useful?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: X The Manimal.5293

X The Manimal.5293

Don’t know if this has been discussed before or not (search suggests no). Anyway, wouldn’t a taunt mechanic be useful in this game, even with no trinity? How often do you see a downed player being chewed up by a mob, where the allies have nothing to do other than try to rez faster than the damage?

You could have interesting strategies, like kiting mobs into traps, bouncing the mobs around, etc. To me, it feels like it would add a bit more order to the chaos, without having to resort to the trinity model (as no profession can stand being the sole target indefinitely).

What do you think?

I’m not COMPLETELY against a taunt but i would find it a waste of skill slot since you have blinds, stuns, knockbacks and etc etc. A great thing about this game is that bosses aren’t always immune to control or stun abilities. Unless a taunt had a secondary buff or something, then that’d be more useful in and out of dungeons.

I think he actually made a vid praising ANet for working on it at one point. Not too sure, havent seen much more of his vids lately.

To answer OP,

Let’s Play – I think these should be left to the VETERANS of Guild Wars. By this I mean people who know the lore and have played the first game. I personally LOVE WoodenPotatoes’ Lets Plays as he is pretty much the most knowledgeable Youtuber on GW lore. I wish ANet would invite him to their studios and have a sit down feedback session. He has some great points and suggestions about the game as it is now.

Shenanigans – There are PLENTY of these to be had in PvE AND PvP.

Impressions – How you feel about the patches as they come out. The Youtuber would have to be reasonable though. I’d hate to see a flat-out “whiner” or “entitled” person rage on a youtube video.

Cant think of anymore, but im sure there’s a lot more you could do.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: X The Manimal.5293

X The Manimal.5293

One of our goals for 2013 will be evaluating all of the bosses and creatures in the game, from open world to dungeons, to try and make them more exciting and fun to fight against.

In general if anything has a really high health pool, it needs to have unique abilities to make it exciting for the entire time, or actually change abilities/tactics as it goes down in health to ensure it stays fun and exciting to fight against.

We realize there are a number of bosses in the game, from the open world to instances that all can be more fun to fight than they are now. We’ll be tackling that this year in part of our goal to make our core game as strong as possible.

Don’t be afraid of phases! I think that even dynamic event bosses would benefit HIGHLY from phases . I’d prefer them to have a pool of abilities to dip into as the fight progresses but phases would be amazing as well. Imagine having an epic fight to the top of a mountain where the boss finally falls from the edge to his ultimate death and the entire map shakes (if its a big boss)! Then everyone in map chat will say “What the heck was that all of a sudden?!”. =) This would be much more exciting than rooted bosses or the “cage match” ones that are confined to a certain area as the players just mash away at skills, snares, and knockbacks off of cooldown… Anyways, great job ANet. Can’t wait to see future updates.

Trees, Branches, and Camera Collision. Oh my!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

X The Manimal.5293

Like that title? =D Anyway, if you haven’t guessed yet, this is about how the camera and how it frequently gets blocked when you are in a map that has low hanging trees, branches, vines and even rocks or cliffs.

In almost every other MMO, the mesh for that object will become instantly transparent when the game detects that your player model is obstructed by it. I recommend ANet do the same. It’s too often that a simply branch blocks my entire view during a fight with monsters that it really removes you from the game.

Also, the camera snap-zooms into the small spaces between an object, and your player model. While this is needed for some locations, it should not happen with trees, rocks and etc.

I’m sure there are people here that can iterate this alot better than I, but I wanted to at least start the conversation. Thank you.

Evol, you’re mistaking my justification for why I want the spinning out, with a complaint. Had I been complaining about not being able to zerg I would have said to get rid of that. The anti spawn function is necessary to prevent problems, however it brings up problems of it’s own. All I’m suggesting is to be able to watch what is happening without having to readjust every 5 seconds.

The fact that other topics were already brought up about it was my mistake obviously. I’m just used to forums where I have to pay to use a search function, so I just forget about it sometimes.

To be honest you did kinda sound like you were just complaining with no actual suggestion but that aside… I COMPLETELY agree with you.

So the suggestion is: Please remove the FORCED spinning camera view when you die. Even when you try to view your party from where you were slain, after a few seconds it resets your view to spinning death cam. This is annoying indeed. I recommend it be removed and even replaced with a spectator mode. This IS the unreal engine after all. I doubt it can’t be done.

Its crazy to me that people still don’t understand the importance of “taking a break” in order to not burn out on games in general. This game gives you the chance to do that since you aren’t paying a sub fee. That is a godsend to me. Personally, when I was playing WoW and SWTOR I would burn out but HAD to keep playing (even if I wasn’t exactly enjoying it) because of the sub. It was a vicious cycle.

So, common sense answer is – Take a Break. Play other games. Ideally, play games of a different genre. I see “burning out” as a sign of maturity. When I was younger I could play overnight easily. Now, I’ll be lucky if I get in 4 hours lol.

It might be natural, but this is a game. It’s supposed to make fun.
Is it fun to get less when you ask your friends/ guild to help you?
If you want to do everything solo, why do you play an MMORPG?
Play a single-player game if you want to, don’t try to ruin the fun for everyone else.

Its not fun. You dont know what fun is, you think if everyone gets everything itll all be fun, its not. The fun comes from having more than someone else. Wether you know it or not, thats whats going on if you were honest about it. Obviously you dont know whats going on if you think everyone having everything is going to be fun for everyone.

So you don’t mind this game not having monster-tagging as long as one person gets more loot than someone else? And how would you justify that? Who gets the better loot?

Also, if you ARE wanting there to be monster tagging so that you’ll be the only one “mowing the lawn” then I can’t agree with that. That’s what made WoW such a pain in the flippin’ anus to level up in.

Equal rewards means more incentive for others to help in a dynamic event.

I don’t think there’s an MMO that doesn’t have loot or some form of gain to it. You’re taking a statement to the opposite extreme. Just because GW2 isn’t ALL about the loot, doesn’t mean it might as well not have any. There has to be a sense of progression stat-wise and visually as well. The thing is though that the armor drops in dungeons and the open world can easily be replaced.

to answer your question: Yes. I would still play it because this still leaves the crafting system, and the dungeon armors. Loot pertains to drops from bosses and mobs (atleast to me) but dungeon armors for tokens aren’t drops.
