My short review to the crown pavilion

I think they’re definitely on the right tracks for what open world boss mechanics should be like, or just good boss mechanics in general. Fair mechanics, clear tekegraphs and promotes engaging gameplay with a lot of movement.

Every one of those bosses on their own would be awesome in a dungeon.

However, I wish they would stop with trying to make open world raids a thing again. You cannot expect random players of all levels and playstyles to organise themselves, spit ends up as always a volley of frustration.

Rewards also need tweaking. I don’t want a flood of economy-wrecking T6 mats to happen again after last year’s fiasco, but I do expect something which justifies me spending time (trying to) organise it rather than pop a few champions on FGS.

I know there’s the chance for goodies like LS rares to drop but it’s the same problem as TA Aether: the chances seem so stupidly low that it may as well not be there.

More Grind, Fewer Rewards

I like the bosses themselves. In fact, I think world bosses should be just like that. Each boss has fair, clear and engaging mechanics, and non of them relies on mostly individual competence.

It’s just the rewards that need a huge buff.

Went in with a lvl 60 toon. Instant downed by boss mechanics- typical lazy programming. Some you just can’t see due to all the effects firing off. Oh look a circle (dodge). Grab your heavy armor toon…

No exp from mobs, and no drops- so no point in killing them.

You certainly don’t need a heavy toon for this event. I saw a lot of people just standing in aoe all the time, and that’s problem for a lot of players, their own laziness.

The only 1HKO skill that I know of is the lava on the flame legion zone. If you got hit by that, then you’re really trying to get yourself killed.

^ the problem is that you have absolutely no control over the mass of players who don’t listen, who uses builds that just feels cool, who wears useless stats, who just brushes off everything the commander tells then with ’I’m playing the way I want’ or ‘you can’t order me around’.

There’s a reason why even Blizzard can’t pull off open world raids. A raid, even easy as this, needs some degree if organisation and optimisation, and you can’t get that here.

What they should have done was leave the pavilion like it was last year, but added this blitz as an instanced guild mission.

It may sound harsh, but if you aren’t in Zerker, if you aren’t running an optimised build, if you don’t want to follow orders, then please don’t join the boss blitz, it’s really not an event for you.

Don't hate on the zerg

I was surprised at the level to which this event has been degraded in its design.

1 – Doesn’t drop tier 5 and 6 mats (which we desperately need due to horrible pricing at the moment)

2 – Apparently expects group splitting, but lacks any means to assist players in doing that.

3 – Terrible rewards that in no way match the time and effort the event requires.

4 – Bosses that are uneven in difficulty and that usually punish melee.

5 – Having to pay to begin the event.

Needless to say, it could only really be worse if it, say, permanently killed our characters on death or something similarly disastrous. As it is, there is just no reason to do this and I`m already seeing people simply going elsewhere.

1. I don’t really see why we ‘need’ T6 mats. Care to explain?
2. Grouping into groups in the main pavilion area is enough to distinguish yourselves. We separate ourselves fine on Wurn and Tequatl, so I don’t really see why this is a pribl. A raiding tool would be nifty, but its not hard to get around it.
3. I agree. But I don’t know what the drops for gold is like, since we can’t kick players out of the pavilion to find out.
4. I don’t really see the problem of bosses being uneven in difficulty, it doesn’t exactly affect the overall mechanic of the event. It’s not like Wurm where you need to kill them at the same time.

I don’t think it punishes melee. I actually think its brilliant. Melee does more damage, so subsequently it’s harder to pull off. Stuff like CoF where melee and ranged are equally easy to pull off and thus giving you no incentive to range at all is the problem.
5. Agree. But we do need a way to stop griefers from starting the event prematurely.

To be honest, if everyone would just organised themselves, use optimised builds and go in full Zerker gear instead of cleric or another completely useless stat setup, we could probably score gold every time and then the rewards might be worthwhile.

Really? Yet another whine thread 12 hours after the release? Masses of free T6 Mats…

You want a broken economy? Because thats how you get a broken economy…

And you don’t have to make one huge zerg to farm through six bosses. This event challenges you to complete it quickly which means to split up into groups. Result:
1. Less Time consuming
2. Less Zergy (You can kill a boss with a 3 (wo)men group)
3 You can choose which boss you want to fight

The tokens we get have insane value. You can get fused Gauntlets for example which needed all flame and frost Achievements when it was first implemented. And if you want real good and valuable stuff, WvW season 2 ends soon which rewards you with multiple ascended weapons.

Why don’t you just play what is fun in this game. You really expected the devs to sit there in a meeting and go “Its time for a gold-patch where players can farm till they drop – that will improve our game!” This is another patch where they try to change our habit to do the content in an unchallenging, unfun zergy way even if we could do something different – just because we think its the more effective play style.

After Guild Wars 2 did everything to bring the players together, it now is forced to go into the other direction and split up the comfy zeros.

And there you go, banging your head against the same wall complaining about the wall being there as it is being torn down.

I think we all expected a bit of a nerf, but this is ridiculous. None of the rewards you are mentioning have any value. Only to personal enjoyment/ fashion/ stats. So unless they come out with legendary weapons built solely out of fashion and bloodstone dust then there goes your end game. I fail to see where the zerging matters here. Zerg or not there is the complete lack of loot. Sorry, I’m not here for volunteer work so give me my paycheck at the end of a job.

You are kind of speaking for yourself here. To someone like me who missed some past LS events, those items have huge value. Legendaries? They are fashion items themselves. The whole game’s reward system is built around fashion.

I’m fine with them getting rid of the 111111 spam for loot, because that was very boring and introduced the game in th most mind-numbing fashion possible to any new players doing the event.

I like how they’re rewarding co-orporative play. It was nice seeing my Zerg to from bronze to silver, we felt great. However:

1. The rewards are just trash. There probably a 0.1% chance or something to get a LS rare item but it’s just Aetherpath all over again. Too much RNG and not enough solid rewards.

2. You can afk through the whole even and just tag a boss at end, and will leech off everyone’s efforts for the whole event. What?!

A few thoughts;

- I like the new mechanics of the Boss Blitz and how they’re trying to make it more like the Marionette event. The full blob must split and some coordination will be helpful in order to not scale bosses out of hand and also kill order might impact what “buffs” the next area bosses get. Good move from the mindless zerg kills previous round.

- Lack of bag drops from mobs and no chest from bosses. No no no. I’ll just dub it the Ghost Pavilion already; once people get their achievements done no one will run here. At least the people fighting in the Queen’s Gauntlet won’t suffer any lag…

- Queen’s Gauntlet take-aways:
* Very nice addition of the Medic
* Sorry to see the camera angle “fixed” – all encounters are now much easier seeing as you don’t get that claustrophobic close-up that people both cursed and embraced.
A Liadri kill this time around is like a mouse fart compared to last year.

I don’t think they should put the farming zerg back with the event as it is. Te event needs organised zergs that are split up. The farm promotes one huge zerg of staff guardians slamming 1111111. They directly contradict each other.

They need to either just scrap this event and put the pavilion back to what it was (with the new, improved boss mechanics) or make the new event a lot more rewarding.

problem is the fights are not that fun. Not rewarding and not fun is a bad combination for a game.

There isn’t that much strategy involved. You just pound them down, over at least a 15 minute time span, and stay alive doing it. It’s stupid if you don’t even get a reward for doing the work.

To be honest, those bosses have some of them most well designed telegraphs in this game to date and some very very interesting mechanics. Look at Wiggins and Pyro, look at them! That’s clear and fair telegraphed mechanics which promote active movement.

Then all of a sudden, you get yelled at by 50 people calling you all sorts of names. You ask why, they answer it’s because you ruined their farm.

Does that sound good to you?

This is something I can never understand. Anet keeps saying they want people to move away from full zerk and all DPS traits, but then they keep making more and more stuff which just encourages people to stack DPS. It just makes no sense.

If you want people to diversify builds, make content that requires or encourages diverse builds, not content with arbitrary DPS-checks.

Pavillion, no loot from regular mobs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Xae Isareth.1364

Xae Isareth.1364

I kind of actually get why they made all the mobs drop no loot. Just picture this:

You got 6 commanders organising 6 small zergs to get gold on Boss Blitz. Then you get a giant zerg cutting through every zone and screwing everything up by making all the bosses scale out of proportion.

Or, what probably realistically would happen is that you got people who wants to do Boss Blitz, then you got everyone else wanting to zerg farm everything, then you end up having the two sizes throw verbal diarrhea at each other for hours on end.

However, the loot from boss blitz so far at least on bronze is abysmal, and there’s nothing we can do on it because the organised level 80 players in full zerker and well-built builds can’t kick the other players out. Simple as that.

It’s a nightmare. A shame as well, because the bosses themselves have quite interesting mechanics.

berzerker is a GEAR set.

until you understand this you will not be able to see the fact that several things changed with the feature patch. there are several “meta” builds for the classes.

say it with me now…

“berzerker is a gear set”

Did I ever say it wasn’t a set? It’s the PvE meta gear setup. A meta isn’t all about trait/skill builds.

If you want to be technical about it, a build involves the stats you’re using for the build as well, so technically, zerker sets are a part of the meta builds.

Tha matter isn’t runes of strengh, it’s the traits that scale with them too well (ex: phalanx, etc…).

In WvW, maybe.

In PvE, not really. You’re still better off might stacking with eles, and you can actually just keep 25 stacks up with Phalanx in a lot of dungeons without using this rune.

[PvE Warrior]Berserker's Power need a change?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Xae Isareth.1364

Xae Isareth.1364

Yeah I know, old news. But here it goes anyways.

Berserker’s Power is fine in PvP and WvW, as CCs, creating chokes, bursting and all that jazz you can do with burst skills have a high impact in a fight, hence that choice between 15% damage or any of the above exists.

However, in PvE, nothing burst skills can possibly do (apart from some extremely rare situations) can outweigh 15% DPS loss until your bar is filled again, and since the endurance gain from bursting got nerfed to the ground, there’s no utility use for them either. This added to the fact that 15% DPS increase is so strong that you’re basically forced to take it unless you run EA/Phalanx means:

1. You’re forced to not use any of your class skills.
2. You’re being rewarded for ….. doing nothing instead if active skill usage.

So, does this trait need changing in PvE?

I don’t think they ever said LS 1 will be permenant. They said the effects of the events will be lasting, which is true. I dont think the effects of an event counts as the ‘meat of it’ in any sense of the word.

Old content doesn’t mean dead content, at least not in GW2. We’re still running vanilla dungeons (ironically, Aetherpath and fractals are less run). It’s all about balancing the rewards right. If they made the battle of LA an UW-esque feature adjusted to 12 people, I’d still run it for the skins, cores and other drops.

Will GW2 be hurt by its own success?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Xae Isareth.1364

Xae Isareth.1364

Let me elaborate on this.

I think it’s a pretty one sided argument that the game has a lot of fundamental problems. CCs have zero use on bosses, a lot of skills bugged, condition builds having no use in PVE whatsoever, and entire classes like the Ranger being non-functional all being examples.

Problems which really needs to be addressed and have been in existence since launch.

Perhaps Anet is working hard to address them, but another side of the argument is also quite valid: there is just no urgency to fix them. The game did extremely well in terms of sales and reception, and arguably continues to do very well, so fixing or not fixing them probably isn’t a huge concern.

So if the game didn’t do so well, not disastrously such that it gets closed, perhaps there would have been more urgency to address those problems and the game might have been better than it is now.

To be honest, I’ve very rarely seen anyone make strong connections in PUGs in other games.

Having extreme reliance on group work is nice and all, but it has it’s own problems. There’s the old LFM Healer problem, it’s frustrating to have a tank who can’t do his job and it often results in a lot of hate.

Also, group work is possible without a trinity as well. The guy who does the slime in TA Aether and the guy who keeps the adds busy on the molten miniboss ate all examples of this.

I don’t understand how a raid dungeon you can supposely do at most 4 times a month is called a grind. They are usually on a timer.

Some people call them a second job though.

It’s a grind because by the time you get the drops you want, you’re probably well bored of the content. It also forces you to put everything on hold to go raid with your guild (PUG raids…ewwwwwwwwwww), which is quite annoying.

you mean like the guy on the forum complaining he got jack from spending 200 hours doing wurm.

If you think people get bored of running things which have a 1 week timer, just imagine how many people are bored with GW2 now, since everything is on a 1 day timer.

That’s why I don’t do Tequatl or Wurm for the rewards.

I never claimed Wurm or Teq wasn’t boring, I was just saying why raids, like grinding anything in MMOs, gets boring in the end.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Xae Isareth.1364

I would very much prefer DLCs. The problem with expansions is that they don’t allow the developers to adjust. They take years to make, so if the community turns out to hate an aspect of what’s planned, well, tough luck.

With DLCs, you can tune in to what people like.

I’m fine with the LS concept, apart from it being temporary. Expansions happen like every 2 years and give you what, a month or 2 of actual content? So if you add all the LS actual content up, it actually might be better than an expansion, IF we can go back to play them.

I personally don’t like DLC it always feels like a scam. But you could make a mix, sell an expansion but also sell parts of it separate. If you buy the expansion you get the whole package including all those separate DLC things.

an expansion does not have to take 2 years. One year should be enough. GW1 did it even faster but for GW2 it might indeed take a little longer. however if you focus on expansions as sale 1 year should be sufficient. You can still easily shift because the upcoming expansion is that always a year maybe max a yeah and a half away.

I don’t really see how DLCs are a scam though. If there’s 4 DLCs in a year, you pay $10 for each of them, whch is basically what most MMOs charge. then you’re basically paying an expansion in instalments, but getting content in more frequent bits.

The problem as I was stating is that you have to get it right the first round, otherwise its basically 1/2 years of work down the drain.

For example, if Anet released an expansion, cutscenes in it probably would be still like the talking heads in your PS, and the story the quality of LS Season 1.

GW2 and Other MMOs - Differences in Content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Xae Isareth.1364

Xae Isareth.1364

Okay so im hoping this topic will encourage some talk regarding the content GW2 has released post-launch as well as answering a question that has been on my mind for a while. Try to keep this constructive please! The more level headed we keep this thread, the more chance ANET have of taking note of it.

So it has been mentioned many, MANY times on the forums that a great number of GW2 players are disillusioned at the state of the game post-launch. Specifically mentioned has been the lack of content released. I will state now that I do not feel this is the case, having witnessed a lot of living story content both permanent and not. The issue here is that I do not have any guide to go by. I have never played another ‘AAA MMO’, instead focusing on smaller (more grindy) Korean titles.

So my question to you is this- In your personal opinion, when directly compared to other MMOs, what is GW2 doing wrong and how would you rectify this?

let give some examples in 2014:
RIFT: released 2 new tier of raiding pluse new souls and pvp maps and also in 2014 the expansion # 2 will be out.
FFX 14 RR: just released last year and it is less than year old but already got over 2 million subscribers and released good amount of content in its 10 months of release
WORLD OF WARCRAFT: well the WOD which is the expansion will come late 2014. which is normal for wow they dont release much of content in between but that is how wow always was and still king of the hill.
SWTOR: released the star fighter mini expansion in 2014 and they also announced the mini expansion with player housing (this mini expansion is going to be bigger that is why it delayed it seems) and in between thing like patch 2.8 is coming.
THE SECRET WORLD: well the similar mmo to gw2 in terms of content release is tsw they had small events like living story so far i do not know what is coming in the future just like gw2 lol.
these are the top AAA mmos in the western market as of today.

In all honesty, if the LS actually stayed, GW2 probably has released more content than all those. The problem is that Anet seems fixated in their LS concept even if it doesn’t work, or even fleshed out.

I mean, they compared the LS to a TV series, but then how did they not acknowledge that every TV series has a playback option or is released later in disc format so people who missed episodes can catch up with it?

P.S: Re:TSW You can pretty safely add that Issue #9: The Black Signal (aka Tokyo) is coming at the end of the month.

GW2 “endgame” is essentially a giant gold farming contest.

Gold gets you nearly everything you want and in order to get something you want, you need to farm it. And since you can’t actively farm specific mats or items you just farm “gold”.

That’s why thousands of people train the mega-events all day. For loot/gold. Or do you think people really find it “fun” to auto-attack bosses to death while on their desktop?

Hahaha, so true.

The thing is, isn’t that true of all MMOs? Even the sandbox ones.

Gold is, and has to be, a valuable currency because otherwise it ends up being vanilla karma v2.0. So of course people will want it, and often in the quickest way possible.

If you allow people to farm for specific mats, would that really actually make any difference in the overall scheme of things?

Instead of: oh, I’ll farm EotM today, then I’ll farm Queensdale tomorrow, it’ll be oh, I’ll farm sparks today for charged stuff today, fire eles for molten stuff tomorrow. So instead of having freedom to farm what you want, you’ll be forced to farm a specific content.

(There’s also the argument that in a organised speedrun group, clearing dungeons is a much better way to get cash than k/ctrains, especially if you can do speed clears of Arah. I’ve also met a few players who claimed that they earn a fortune from speedclearing TA Aetherpath and selling the skin drops, splitting the cash.)

to some degree. Some things cannot be traded (a system I am not really a fan of). Most things can be farmed reliably. And the most important difference: A lot more rewards for harder tasks, also in currency (just look at QD vs Fractals, sigh, but it is ingrained in the game design for “casuals”).

I tend to think that you shouldn’t reward everything with just gold, or measure everything by gold/hour, because you’re never going to balance that.

What could happen is to give each activity its own unique reward, and let demand/supply take care of the rest. Some things need to be untradable to either keep the economy stable/avoid player stress from price turmoil, have them as a sense of achievement (e.g. SAB trib skins) or to give a bigger incentive to actually do the content.

I think Fractals at the start was pretty good. Want an ascended backpiece and rings? Go to fotm. It really needs a further stage of rewards to incentivise doing it. If we could buy ascended chests or fractal skins for example, would fix that problem.

(although as stated before, for things like obs shards, I still think fotm is the best place in the game to get them for an optimal party)

It is pretty correct in that sure you will do 3% more damage for their protection boon. But I am fairly certain that isn’t enough DPS to cut through it. Its an argument as old as the implementation of the trait. I was there when the trait 1st came out. I remember the discussions we had about it. We kinda got this trait to help warriors counter bunker guardians at the time. If you remember correctly at that time bunker guard was the meta. It was a trait designed to punish boon spamers and help take down that meta at the time. And pretty much the trait fell short of that. doesn’t serve the purpose of that. It helps but its not enough to overcome it.

But you still do more damage than if you didn’t have the trait. Its not like the trait competes with another which lets you purge it.

I think we really need a trait which upgrades our class skills like how you can upgrade Guardian virtues.

My problem with it is that like much of this game, its a spreadsheet game. It’s fun and all to theorycraft and come up with optimised builds, but stuff like DWA makes next to zero difference on your gameplay.

You really don’t feel it being there, because, its 10% on weapons which are already very fast. If it was 10% on GS, so I can finish 100B 0.4 seconds earlier, I might feel it, but as it stands, its a really boring trait.

@maha I really don’t think a game where you just take pure DPS utilities and nothing else because everything else is useless makes a good game. IE, what GW2 is atm apart from a few select cases like 40+ grawl.

I very rarely say this but in this particular case, if you don’t like the way the endgame plays out, then this game just isn’t for you sadly.

Anet has always said, even before launch, that the endgame starts at level 1. There is no ‘endgame’, just ‘the game’. The whole game is the endgame, what you want to do is up to you, and you set goals for yourself, the game doesn’t do that for you.

It’s like asking what the endgame in Skyrim was.

Whether goals are ‘meaningful’ is a very subjective thing. For example, on TSW, my guild leader played the game since launch, and he has never sat foot in a single dungeon, and is still geared with what’s basically that game’s equivalent of greens. Was he wasting his time? Who’s me or you to judge that.

Personally, a game is meaningful as long as you are having fun. Anet has stated that this is the way the game works, its very open, its super casual, and the endgame is just doing whatever you want. Well, if you don’t like that, then, I guess its just not the game for you :L

The MMO market is full to the brim with games where you get pulled around on a leash and where most of the content is irrelevant after level cap, can’t we just have 1 game where you can do what you want, instead of the game nudging you constantly towards a goal it set for you?

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS.

GW2 is unique, has its own set of strengths and weaknesses, and it works for a particular sort of player. There are plenty of other games that have the other things people are looking for. Changing to match those other games would erase all reason to play _italic_GW2_italic_, rather than some other game. I don’t want all the MMOs to cater to the same, please-everyone demographic. I want them to be different, unique, so everyone can pick the game that suits them. I hope it continues to hold on to the differences that make it special. <3

Anet already has strayed far from their initial vision of the game. Ascended was added because people complained there was no endgame progression, FotM has AR-locks because again, people wanted a quantifiable way to see their progression.

I can understand why, because they want to capture a wider market butI tend to think that if you made a product to be used in a particular way, then sledgehammer more features that obviously aren’t supposed to be there to reach a compromise, you get a mess at the end. That’s what Ascended stuff are, a tumor on GW2.

I don’t play any mmorpg. I’m not saying gw2 ducks but I’m saying it’s declining base on observation.

What observation on the forums can you make that the player base is declining though? Are there less post here can you see when the last time some one played on these forums can you account for ppl only posting when they feel strongly one way or another? To base things purely off of seconded hand observation on something slightly related to something else is a bad way to say one thing or another.

The decline in activity. Granted, it may not be nearly as accurate as hoped, it is the only medium by which a player can kitten in its entirety. Normally, a player would be limited to any particular server or magazone at any one point in time but on the forum, you can grasp the activity level very well. Just for example sake, let’s look at Lol. We all know it’s popular, not arguing about which game is better or Apple to orange, their forum is VERY VERY active simply due to their population. In that sense, we can get a sense of how the game is doing base on the activity on the forum.

When you look at a game’s forum, you will generally notice that the more popular and populated the game is, the more activity there is. If there is a decline in activity, it would not be far fetched to assert that there is some level of decline for the main game in popularity and therefore by definition, population as well.

But how do you observe the decline in forum activity? I mean, we don’t have any solid numbers, and any observation is a tiny sample and arguably very subjective because how do you quantify activity based on your observations?

Pointless question. If you’re looking for optimal personal DPS it was recently proven that Pure-Greatsword is a better choice.

It actually isn’t. If you can’t get off 100b reliably, GS DPS is screwed. Axe AA is a lot easier to get off because you can move and it doesn’t suffer as much from being interrupted for dodges.

Also, I’m not too sure on this one because apparently the tooltips in game don’t show the full picture so I can’t rely on my pure theory calculations (which shows axe to have higher DPS), but apparently the conclusion that theorycrafters who compare DPS tests frame by frame came to was that unless you can wall-WWA, GS and axe actually have about the same DPS.

It really actually also depends on how you play and how the situation turns out. For example, lately, I’ve started to come to a conclusion that personally in most cases in a PUG, if I run an EA build, on most fights which aren’t facerolls, I definitely have higher DPS by using fast hands and switch between them, because I can’t get off 100b all the time (due to things like a lack of personal reaction time to deal with soem of them and other things like how other players move around being out of my control), but just enough that the 5 second CD has significant benefits for me, so being able to constantly adapt and switch between 100b and AA/Evicerate more than compensates for the DPS loss on a single weapon.

If you miss the last triple chop your damage sucks with the Axe due to being backloaded damage. Interrupting 100B hurts, but not as much as interrupting your Axe chain as the damage is less backloaded. This was taken into account when DeKeyz & co. helped to calculate DPS. GS is both theoretically and practically better DPS.

The question is how do you take it into account? Did they assume some sort of percentage chance that each hit isn’t able to land, did different scenario testing on different situations to model an ‘average’ situation, or something else? The assumptions make or break a model, and we need to know what was assumed.

Also, although it hurts more, its a lot easier to land the axe chain and argubaly less hurting even if screw it up.

1. The last axe chain is a lot easier to land than the whole of 100B, simply because its a shorter cast. The fact you can move during it is also a huge advantage,k especially if you’re in a PUG and the boss is running everywhere.

2. If you screw up the axe chain, you can just start over because its an AA, but if you interrupt 100B, you’re on a 7 second CD for it.

Duhh I need everything spelled out for me because despite wanting to engage in a discussion about the game I can’t be assed to keep up on relevant info

If you can pull out player numbers for me and provide evidence of your ‘dev drop’ for me, hats off to you. Before you can do that, you sound like a child arguing everything with personal insults and circular arguments.

It there to feed off chaos I believe. Kill Shot is a huge sign that says ‘dodge me’ in a 1v1, but say in a 30 vs 30, the chances are that your enemy won’t see it coming until it’s too late.
