[Merged]1year post launch. How Anet feel on Trinity?

Xae Isareth.1364

Here is the point:

ANet did not end the trinity. They just made healing and tanking not viable even though we have the options in most classes trait and weapon choices, leaving DPS the only role left for everyone in PvE.

People ask why other people would like a system like the trinity, but honestly, people just like to play different roles. Every class plays more or less the same in GW2:

Auto-attack, dodge, random-attack, dodge… The variety is very slim, and it gets fairly stale at some point. It doesn’t matter if you are a warrior in heavy armor or a elementalist in cloth, the mantra is damage to the face and dodge like a bunny.
With the melee/berserker meta in PvE, things get only worse. Everyone is a glass cannon melee class…

There is only only role to be played in this role playing game. How is that fun in the long run?

It’s an interesting point for consideration. Do people actually mind not having roles and just playing classes which play differently? The reason why we had roles I feel in old MMOs was because it was the only way to differentiate classes, the knight stands there and hits stuff, the thief also stands there and hits stuff.

For example, in Vindictus or Dynasty Warriors, you could say everyone is just the DPS, but they DPS differently, and that’s not really a bad system. Since GW2 is part action game, it could embrace that route. Not sure if it would work, but they could.

The current game does have clear roles in a lot of places though, especially in recent releases.

I don’t know what you expect from this thread. All the arguments have been had. Threads were locked. Some people quit.

My stance is that ascended items reward power for free time, and I don’t like that. I’d rather success come from skill and talent rather than numbers acquired by grinding/busywork. But other people disagree. Some people disagree so hard they think that MMOs are fundamentally about turning free time into bigger numbers, and nothing else.

The biggest thing people want out of MMOs is tangible progress (not my opinion, proven by surveys), that’s what differs a MMO from just a game with a multiplayer function. Power is a very tangible form of progress, but talent and skill isn’t.

You missed the point. The post you quoted was contrasting power gained through talent and skill with power gained through throwing time at the game. Progress would be made under either scenario, hence your point is not applicable.

Also, if you’re claiming objective support for a position, it’s polite to provide links. If you don’t, people will assume you’re pulling facts from the place where most people pull facts on internet forums.

I couldn’t agree more. And yes – when we and they say “progress,” we mean gear. End game in MMO’s is always gear progression. Nothing. Else. Which goes back to my point – please do give me something tangible: boss fights and challenging content – something that pushes my skills, something exciting for me to aquire gear from, not farming and a crafting screen.

This would be fine if this was the system they implemented – and I know ascended gear is something they supposedly were planning to implement from the start – but it seems like they are just hurting their own game design and frustrating their customers in the process.

It doesn’t have to be gear. For example in TSW it was in a large part getting all the abilities, but it has to be a visible progression which the player can notice. So they can feel they got something out of their time, if you will.

Hardcore encounters like in TBC WoW is a good way of progress, but Anet seems to be very much against doing content which 5% of the playerbase ends up doing. Not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing, because frankly speaking, if I was a casual who isn’t good at games, I won’t be seeing any progress at all if it was all based on hardcore boss encounters, and I would end up quitting.

That’s why WoW stopped being hardcore.

Having said that, I do want to see hardcore raids in the game, and battle trophies (aka cosmetic loot) from doing them.

Just to add one more thought. I think all this grindy content burns goodwill.

My non-scientific anecdotal evidence suggests that when people quit the game because the goodwill is gone they really end up hating the game. The amount of venom I’ve heard from friends who left the game is unbelievable.

That venom often also comes from wanting a justification.

Leaving a game is a decision. There’s benefits and costs, a massive obvious cost being abandoning all the time you’ve invested into the game. No matter how good a game is, people may leave. They’ll often use whatever reason they can find to mentally justify that decision, to comfort themselves that they made the right decision.

I’ll be the first person to explain why the stats don’t really matter and why Ascended weapons are good.

The weapons alone are about 5% damage increase (yes, there’s other stuff but obtaining them is a different matter, we’re just talking about weapons here). This wont make much of a difference in PvE (unless you really care that much about shaving a few mins at best off a dungeon run), and WvW being imbalanced already by design, it won’t matter there too.

What it does however, is revive half the game. If you remember before they got introduced, no one bothered with JPs or world bosses at all. Now people do.

They could have introduced cosmetic rewards for world bosses but the problem is, cosmetic rewards are subjective, not everyone will like the skins and a fair portion of players may not even be interested in skins at all.

TA Aetherpath for example. It has a chance to drop unique skins, and gives a good bit of gold. But you rarely get PUGs doing it because simply its a horrible experience in one because it actually needs co-ordination, skill and non-Zerker gear which frankly most of the playerbase don’t have.

Not quite sure what you can do about it.

It didn’t change until I went back and tried out TSW again. That experience was harrowing, being constantly on the waiting queue for any dungeon because I’m a DPS. I would never want a hard trinity back.

You don’t need the trinity, you just need specific roles which everyone can adapt for. A good example is the TA Aetherpath end boss. There’s the guy who lures holos and the guy who positions the boss.

Neither role needs any specific classes because any class could adapt to it with the right gear and skill setup. Bam! You got an encounter which has important roles which certainly isn’t a DPS fest and you don’t get stuck on the unwanted list for being a DPS class.

MMOs don’t need a trinity. Most devs are just too afraid or lazy to think of an alternative.

lol, that would be just like them, to say you’ll soon have the ability to craft precursors, then limit it to only legendaries that aren’t in the game yet, where the precursors you craft are non-tradable, can’t be obtained elsewhere, cost more to craft than previous precursors cost to buy, and are time-gated. I look forward to this message: “Only 1 precursor can be crafted per day”.

That’s a very wide thing to do.

If something goes wrong, making current precursors craftable will massively devalue existing Legendaries, upsetting everyone who worked their butts off to get one.

You can’t always make content everyone enjoys because that’s logically impossible given that everyone enjoys different things.

So done updates are of course disliked by some, but you want those players to still play the update because otherwise you’ll lose them to another game. So therefore it’s a good idea to put rewards which they’ll want in the update.

Not everyone plays games to get loot or skins. I don’t. I have skins, obviously and I enjoy them. But I don’t play to get them. For example, I enjoyed beating all the dungeon paths in this game. I didn’t do it to grind for skins though. I did it because I wanted to beat all the dungeon paths in the game.

I’d much rather buy a skin than grind for a skin, even though I’m capable of grinding for a skin. Doing each dungeon once is enough for me…or a few times for dungeons I like. Doing a dungeon 9 times to get my legendary proves nothing. After the first three or four times I beat it, I know I can beat a dungeon at will. What does doing it again and again prove?

I’d much rather be able to spend real money (or farm gold doing what I want) and buy armor, than grind for it in game.

The thing is, for a MMO to keep being successful, it has to be strong incentives to to repeat content over and over, because you can’t make content faster than people complete them.

In a game which is based on skins, the obvious incentive should be skins. Currently there is next to no actual incentive to repeat some of the harder dungeons like Arah P4 (unless you’re one of those exploiters glitching through the dungeon). Skins would help to solve that.

Also, of someone doesn’t play the game for skins, why would they care if there’s new skins being put in for paying the game?

They should do something about DR as well. Humans are a race which has been beaten, slaughtered and driven into a corner by the other races, yet DR, where we are making our last stand, reflects nothing of that. It should look like a fortress constantly under siege.

It can potentially add an interest mechanic to it. They could extent this to enemies using other downed skills apart from heal and basic attack, which could bring about some interesting fights.

Also, other enemies will go and res their allies, what we have so far isn’t that great but they could really work with that to bring about some interesting synergies between enemies.

I guess if they made GW3 to be my perfect game, it would….

1) have no classes whatsoever and fully embrace action combat. You would have fully costumisable combo chains for each weapon tupe which comes with an utility bar for certain skills which won’t work in a combo chain (eg ground-targeting AoEs).

2) remove stats from gear altogether and focus vertical progression on levelling abilities and skills. Weapons would give you certain effects which are horizontally progressive and armours are just cosmetic.

3) bosses so huge you need to fight them on top of them.

4) fully destructible environment, with environmental weapons being perfect ably usable alternatives to your weapon.

5) incredibly diverse gameplay with elements taken from everything from horror survival to button-bash combat.

6) immersive storyline which combines sci-fi with high-fantasy (much like Starcraft lore I suppose).

So…you want something that sounds like a combination of Diablo 3, The Elder Scrolls, maybe Dead Island, maybe Dante’s Inferno, Assassin’s Creed, God Of War, the Halo Series?

If you were talking about point 5) an example of it would be something like:

You’re jumping across rooftops fighting hordes of demons (the action combat part), but then you step on a loose part of the ground, sending you tumbling down into some sort of an dark underground complex, you twist your ankle in the process, and thus must make your way out of the place cippled (the horror survival part).

Agreed. Remember in GW1 (And other MMOs) how when new weapons were introduced, they were a reward from completing content and overcoming challenges? Dhuums Soul Reaper? 2 Weeks Living World vs 2 Month Living World

I think they should just get 2 of the LS teams to work on 1 month small updates, stuff which are just a package of minor content like new skills, balance patches and side stories.

The other 2 LS teams would be combined to release large updates with new dungeons, areas, and major story arcs to be released on a roughly 2 month schedule.

That way, we get little bits of content frequently to keep players occupied until bigger expansion-quality updates.

Anet already said that there are much more teams working on different content not related to the Living Story. So there is no need to change the LS teams to do things that other teams are already working on. I have no doubt that the major content releases, especially ones that deal with the Dragons storyline, are going to take much longer to create than Living Story Content. It takes 4 months to create a 1 months of Living Story content, I suspect it is going to take much much longer to create major storyline content.

The problem is, its been 1 year already. We still havn’t seen any of those bigger projects, or even heard what they actually are.

Even the most optimistic person gets skeptical at this point.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I think the plot might actually be going somewhere.

Look at the image. There’s clearly something manipulating Scarlet, something plant-like, husk-like. We know it isn’t to do with the Nightmare Court because through the Aetherblade Path in TA, we know that Scarlet seems to be beyond Faolain.

So, what’s the only other villain we know which has something to do with plants? The elder dragon Mordremoth.

It makes sense. What does every elder dragon do when they awake? They gather an army, and look what little Scarlet was doing all along, uniting half the races hostile to the Pact under her banner, now all he needs to do is corrupt them and he’ll have the biggest army the world has seen.

Which brings us unto the next point. Dragons corrupt life and bend minds to their will. If Scarlet or him had something to do with the tower, that’s exactly what he’s doing. It’s spreading its offshoots across the world, and poisoning everything its pores touch, corrupting them with dragon corruption.

But then again, this could all be a wring and we just get Scarlet going diediediediedie for years to come. But a boy can dream right?

Although the only MMO I’m waiting on is Titan and I think next year looks horrendous in terms of new MMOs (2012 saw hugely innovative MMOs like this one and TSW, and MMOs which are completely on new grounds like Firefall, 2013’s big names are WoW-in-space and a Skyrim which looks more and more boring as they reveal more of it)….

I think the LS is just terrible as well. A good story needs to captivate its reader, not ask the reader to bear with it until it shoves through. A story is entertainment, not an investment of time to see if I get anything good in return.

The weapon doesn’t make that much difference. The only reason you “need” one is for fractals, but they haven’t even opened 50+ yet.

We don’t Almost no one plays this game to feel mediocre. Everyone Almost everyone wants BiS gear. If they didn’t there would be no reason to add this stuff.

Edited: edit to avoid stupid pedantic arguments.

Stupid pedantic argument incoming. lol

I don’t disagree that no one plays this game to feel mediocre. I do disagree that most people feel mediocre if they don’t have an ascended weapon.

I don’t even think BIS gear is on most people’s radar. Most people are still trying to figure out how to dodge. lol

Ha. Just the person I edited to avoid (bait??? Sometimes I don’t know my own motivations). However, in this case, I don’t think that was either stupid or pedantic. Stupid and pedantic is “I like being mediocre, you don’t speak for all of us.”

You’re point, in contrast, is rather thought provoking. It’s possible that ascended gear is really only a problem for those of us who walk the line between casual and hardcore. Casual in time available but hardcore in drive. (As far as I can tell you are the opposite, hardcore in time casual in drive) Combine that with being an altoholic and you have even a smaller subset of people. most people would just play one character and stick with it.

Nevertheless I will continue to advocate for my particular brand of idiocy.

See, the problem is that by the same argument, no one plays this game to look bland. almost everyone wants expensive skins.

So, does that mean we should all get free Legendaries?

I said this a couple of weeks ago, but what the kitten, if people what to re-open an argument I will.

To me, stats are fundamentally different than skins. This is for a couple of reasons (probably all related, but I see them as a little different)

a. Skins aren’t functional, stats are.,
b. You can have a skin that’s “good enough”, for many people the only good enough gear is “BIS”.
c. Skins aren’t time gated. If you gots the money you can buys the skin. However, if you want an ascended amulet you need to grind at least 20 laurels. Yes, I know dungeon tokens are time gated, but the gating isn’t that long.
d. Good looking skins are subjective, numerical stats are objective.
e. No one will kick you from a dungeon run for having ugly armor.

That’s probably enough for now. I realize that I’m overlapping and repeating myself.

a. Functionality of a stat only matters when it makes a materialistic and noticeable difference. In other games having higher tiers of gear allowed me to stomp players in PvP and destroy mobs like paper in PvE, I feel vastly more powerful. In Gw2 having Ascebded gear gives me no actual noticeable difference in in power.

then tell me, why isn’t exotics ‘good enough’? You can do everything just five with it, and see above comment. If you’re talking about personal satisfaction, I’m not satisfied until I get every Legendary in the game and enough gold for me to buy the entire TP. Greed is part if human nature, there is no satisfaction.

c. They aren’t time gated but often the ‘best’ skins are a lot harder to get than Ascended stuff. Would you want to switch the process of making Mjnor and the Ascended hammer around? Something which doesn’t have a time gate but requires you to grind for days on end to get enough cash to make is still effectively time gated.

d. I don’t see why this matters.

e. no one would kick you for not having ascended gear. Unless they’re that desperate to shave 1 min off a run.

2 Weeks Living World vs 2 Month Living World

2 months would make me quit the game, I’d have nothing to do between the updates, and if there was an update I didn’t like, well, there’s another 4 months of nothing to do.

I played various MMO-s for years where you often had to wait around half year for new content. And I felt it was fine. GW1 with close to one year intervals between big expansions was fine (in fact GW1 expansions were amazing and a perfect model for what I would call good content upgrades for an MMO). Now, “new content” every two weeks is a new experiment and if you would ask me, I would call this experiment to be madness. If you really feel like quitting the game becouse it does not spam you with new “content” every two weeks, I think you have an issue with longterm gaming commitments in general.

PS. God forbid if you would not play GW2 for a week or two becouse current content is not new enough for you. If the game does not force you to log every single day (which is what GW2 seems to be aiming at), does it mean it fails? There are tons of other games to mix and match out there when you feel like taking a small break from GW2. There is also this thing called the outside world. I heard it has pretty good graphics.

I’ve never stayed in a MMO for more than 2 months apart from this, RuneScape and WoW. But WoW because there was so much stuff to do already. I personally prefer only playing one game at a time.

I don’t ‘commit’ myself to a game. I don’t like to play a second job and pay my boss for it. I leave when things get boring.

It’s not really madness, RuneScape has weekly updates and that’s been a selling point, and a successful one. RuneScape is easier to update, but Anet has a bigger team. They just need to structure right in terms if priority.

See, the problem is that by the same argument, no one plays this game to look bland. almost everyone wants expensive skins.

So, does that mean we should all get free Legendaries?

almost everyone wants good-looking skins. Legendaries for the most part are ugly, and if the only reason to acquire them was in their looks, i wouldn’t even consider getting one.

Unfortunately, their stat-switching offers a significant advantage.

That’s up to each perspn’s taste. I find all the spirit weapons ugly because they don’t match with any armour at all, but the price clearly educate otherwise.

Fine, replace Legendaries with ‘some really expensive skin’ then, but that’s not the point if the argument.

Sometimes I wonder if we just call every other race ither than us and Quaggans ‘threats’ and just eliminate them so Queen Jennah can hold another celebration on DR over it.

That would be quite an interesting thing to ponder on. I would love playing as a massive empire hellbent on subjugating the world.

I might be a bit late on this but…

Defeat the Karka Queen. Condition: defeat the Queen before she flees in 15mins.

Wat.

Shatterer/Teq/Jormag just basically flies away goin ‘wow, late for the party tonight chaps, see you all tommorow!’ leave everyone baffled, but this is just….. why the heck are we trying to defeat her if she was trying to run away?!

I think it;d be quite funny if GW3 comes out whilst GW2 is still being updated.

GW3 comes out. Spoilers: humans all died.

2 Weeks Living World vs 2 Month Living World

2 months would make me quit the game, I’d have nothing to do between the updates, and if there was an update I didn’t like, well, there’s another 4 months of nothing to do.

I really want to ask something though. In all honesty, are you guys ‘holding’ back lore from GW1 and aren’t diving into them because you’re afraid that, the LS being a very new concept and arguably in a stage of experimentation, there’s a good chance they won’t see their full potential realised?

Downed state's Place in the game

Its got a place in PvE, because simply our characters are rather fragile and the difficulty of a lot of content would be absolutely ridiculous without the ability to resurrect due to the length of a lot of boss fights.

…developed by a company other than Anet.

You got it all wrong! Anet is a good company. NCsoft is the bad guys here they holding Anet back.

The question is, who would you want it to be developed by?

Why Scarlet is amazing.

Some want Scarlet to just “up and die” and be done with. But they probably don’t even know her story.

What’s funny is that it’s the people who know what she’s doing to the Guild Wars lore and story that hate her….

huehuehue

I guess, following that logic, they hate this game and shouldn’t be playing it.

There’s a lot of games which have good gameplay and thus attracted a large following but has terrible plot, which its fanbase often complains about. Like Ninja Gaiden, awesome gameplay, non-existent plot.

^ I think your mistaking the playerbase and the forums.

Ya these forums are not that best places to even talk about the GW2 community. As for in game most of the non overflow zones are full of nice ppl. Now say wvw where there a lot of stress you can see the bad side of ppl when the fight is very close or when your side is losing badly.

WvW is competitive, humans don’t like losing. That’s why it brings out the worst in people.

Death Knight "look" based class

I think a Death Knight would be the polar opposite if the Guardian. Instead of burning with flames he’d chill enemies, instead of Pure of Voice he’d have Words of Corruption which converts boons into conditions, etc.

Also, I feel that there isn’t enough about YOU. During the PS, even after Trehrne got all Kormir on you and took the glory, it was still about you. You led the Pact on countless missions to victory, you helped reunite Destiny’s Edge and the NPCs knew and respected you.

In the LS, you were only one soldier in a massive army who stopped Scarlet’s invasions, acted as one of Caithe’s 5 sidekicks to find out more about Scarlet, one of the millions of visitors to attend Queen’s Pav. You’re nobody, you aren’t important, you’re just a pawn in the overarching scheme of things.

Also, slightly offtopic, but reward vs risk needs to be adjusted. There’s no reason to bother running Arah P4 a second time or do DEs because there are far more efficient alternatives to money and karma is almost useless.

What do you guys hope the update will bring?
