I love necromancer, but I just don’t understand what happened to him between gw1 and gw2 O_o
Judging from his skills and such, I think necros where completely eradicated and all of their scrolls and tomes where destroyed and now they have only just started to re-learn necromancy. It would explain why they are so horrible at it.
I like this idea, but lets expand on it some shall we?
First issue, our DS offers almost nothing to our minions, infact it offers almost nothing to anyone other than dagger users. But thats an whole other topic.
and the other problem is they dont heal outside of combat and that seems to be something thats never going to change.
So seeing as necros are all about collecting life force, lets spend it on some useful stuff!
F2 – Minions Attack; At the cost of some Life force you order your minions to attack and they gain some might and/or fury.
F3 – Minions Defend; At the cost of some Life force you order your minions to protect you, causing them to generate more aggro and they get aegus and/or protection.
F4 – Revitalize; At the cost of some Life force your minions get a surge of healing and/or gain regeneration.
sorry that I changed retreat to defend, I just dont see the point in having passive minions. If you dont want them to fight, dont summon them. It makes sense for a hunter, hits pet is always out.
I dont hate Necros, im just disapointed with them.
I dont care how amazing that might be at everything else. I just wanted one thing out of them. To be minion masters, and they failed at it miserably. That makes me sad.
If your upset with the incorrect information about the cooldown thats just nitpicking.
They could work on the amount of time they studer, well its not really stuttering it more like they cant make up where mind on what they want to say so they start one sentence then stop after one word and start a new one, but then change their mind again and start over on the first sentence.
Need to stop, think then speak.
But its a very nice podcast and is very informative and gives you stuff to think about when your playing.
Clones are meant to deal 0 damage, I dont exactly know why they allow them to deal more than 1 damage but they are meant to be “fake” yous. Where as the phantoms are meant to deal damage but are obviously not the player.
Clones have 2 main uses, the first is clearly kittenter fuel. The second is to take a hit for you, this can be enhanced with traits that cause killed illusions to apply conditions. So them dieing in 1 hit actually works in your favor.
I like the idea of having deformed abominations as your minions is a nice break from the normal skellys zombies and other assorted undead.
Tho If I was going to frankenstein a dog-ish creature I would have picked a skull better adapt at biting.
The ONLY way I seem them doing big enough changes to the models at this point is to have traits that improve the minions do it.
Like training of the master could change the bone minions skull to more of a hounds or maybe a gator’s skull. And Vampiric master could maybe add little bat wings to them. (I know fangs would make more sense but wings would actually be noticeable and still give the vampire feel to them.)
Stuff like that for each minion might be some work but it would make people like minions more because it would feel like they are designing them to a degree.
but before that they need to buff them or give us some indirect ways to buff them so they are viable in general play. I mean how long have people been asking for ‘out of combat’ healing on ALL minions?
IMO the engineer should be an engineer with devices and gadgets and not standard weapons like bombs and grenades.
And not the stupid cartoon gadgets like slick shoes or the pocked ram, or the fail-rocket boots.
I would have things like a robotic clockwork backpack kit that dispenses small drones that fly around you for a bit and shoot at enemys. Much like the StarCraft Carrier/Interceptors and an elite skill that instead of a weak kitten mortar it would be a steampunk mech suit, the animation for it could be like how Gizmoduck’s armor attaches to him (or for you kiddies, how the new Ironman armor attaches)
I’ll stop here, iv hated how the engineer is a joke from day one. and to see a topic where “What the engineer should be” is only have more weapon kit slots feels like a waste to at least talk about how the engineer could have been an engineer rather than a grenade throwing grunt.
OPs problem is he is still low level and Mesmers are horrible low level. You NEED traits to even function as a mesmer and until you get some (say around level 40 or so) your going to have a bad time.
Rifle hands down, the pistols are a joke, and bad ones at that.
I never use the hidden pistol skill or its toolbelt skill. Race skills tend to suck compared to class skills.
Armor does look crappy on Charr, why the Charr culture armor isnt steampunk or clockwork designed is beyond me. If any thing I would label it tribal, like their dance (so bad).
I would not reroll just for the skill.
The lower levels are hell. Once you reach lvl 40 or so it gets actually enjoyable.
I jumped from weapon to weapon trying to find somthing I liked. Finally settled on sword/sword with greatsword alt. I view the mesmer more of a “ninja” type class more than a magician, so because of that the staff and scepter weapons never felt right for me and thus couldn’t use them properly.
You just have to power through the low levels until you get enough traits to be useful and fun. The mesmer seems to rely on traits more than the other classes to function.
I find it amazing that people are actually defending minions not attacking.
However, I think we can all agree that even if minions did function properly 100% of the time, they still wouldn’t be worth using. Everyone thats started a necro to be a minion master has been majorly disappointed.
But hey, this is a game where the warrior class has better gun skills than the engineer class.
Hmm… The only thing I can think of that I like is that you can collect life force from dead enemies. I dont, how ever, like how you use the life force.
I cant think of any thing else, I cant even find a weapon skill set that I like.
The necro went from going to be my main before I got the game, to my least liked class after iv played him. SO much disappoint.
Ontopic: stop fantasying about any changes to necromancer, they barely touched upon bugs, so no new features will be coming for months, even years…
This is true.
The thing that makes me so angry is that good MM classes are so rare in MMOs, and of any MMO. a squeal to an MMO that does have a good MM class (and had confirmed to be bringing that class back) had the best chances of being both a good MMO AND having a good MM class.
It feels like thanks to the class mechanic of DS I got cheated out of my MM class that I was eagerly looking forward to.
I’m for any change to DS, even the removal of DS.
It was a really stupid idea to give any character a second health bar, Any one that knows any thing about balance knows that will force the entire class to be subpar just to try to balance the clear OPness of having a second health bar.
Saying a necromancer isnt a guy with undead minions is like saying an archer isnt a class that specialises in ranged combat, or cleric isnt a class all about healings, or that an engineer isnt a class about gadgets…
Well this is GW2, we have warriors with rifles, rangers with great swords, and engineers with grenades. So a guess a necro with out minions fits right into this backwards game.
Thats not there main objective, thats just the current obstacle blocking them from it.
They need a tree to mass produce sylvari that are part of the nightmare from the start.
Like all evil organizations, there end goal is world domination or maybe world destruction.
This sounds on par as what happens in instances, and other end zone fights with AoEs.
Minion masters are a joke since we have to wait so long on all the recasts. I would be fine with them dying quickly if we could just keep pushing them out like in the first one we basically could. O you killed 3 minions of my 8, ill just summon 2 more to place them. mob dies I get 2 more again to keep them up, etc.
I think the necro would have been much funner if the Life Force we gathered was used to summon minions, Much like the GW1 necro used corpses.
It holds the necro back from being a good class. Thats what it does.
I think the reason the Pale Tree and the “Other” tree are free of dragon control is because the dragon is asleep. The seeds where hidden away in a safe, hard to find location So when the dragon did wake up it could retrieve them.
The starter area where you battle the dragon is most likely the dragon’s subconsciousness reaching out to the tree. Seeing as its asleep its much easier to resist.
The Nightmare Court have accepted the dragon’s call, problem is they dont have direct access to the dragon. There basically leaderless atm.
Think of it like a Zerg Brood, with the nightmare court being the zerglings, only they dont have an overlord to relay commands to them from the cerebrate. They know there suppose to kill every thing, but there just not as organzed as they need to be.
The blade only appears when you draw the weapon?
Is that a warden only effect because my Carrion Verdant blades are always visible.
*Note: im 80% sure the Carrion part isnt part of the weapon name but referring to the stats of the weapon, Its just that they only come in that one set of stats so its always Carrion Verdant.
The Pale tree probably limited it to just them two because of trying to be “good”. Once the Elder Dragon that created it (my current theory) wakes up, there will be several more sylvari creatures. The current Dragons create there minions from living or dead (depending on the dragon) creatures. There are a few dragon minions that seems to have been created on there own with out needing a creature to make it. Thats probably what the sylvari are, the basic minions the dragons create on there own that are used to go out and collect creatures to make new types of minions.
The Pale Tree probably has the ability to infect living creatures and turn them into a fern creature of some sort, but doesnt due to the teachings.
The Nightmare court seems to be trying to recreate this processed on there own. They have several Nightmare creatures under there control but they dont appear changed, only enslaved. They have managed to create some plant based creatures on there own how ever.
Also, Malyck is humanoid despite coming from a different tree.
Its not like we have an entire keyboard of unused keys for things like, Picking up turrets, picking up weapon bundles like warrior’s banners, picking up fallen allies, finishing off enemys, talking to npcs, gathering loot, mineing/harvest, mounting on a cannon/mortar, getting into some asura’s golem suit, or interacting with some object.
Nope, it ALL has to be the same button!
I logged on once right after the patch. That was it.
I really expected more from it and was majorly let down. When the rumor was going around that the engi was getting like 30 fix/changes i just knew Deployable turrets was going to be fixed. And it wasnt.
I also expected the necro’s minions to be overhauled (or at least given ooc healing or maybe some AI tweaks) that didnt happen either.
Thoes where the only 2 things I cared about.
I dont care about any new content until i can have fun playing the classes I want to play.
Only the Bone Minions explode. Unless you take Death Nova but even then I think that just applys poison. (never used it)
A Mesmer makes a MUCH better “minion bomber”.
You miss understand, Im not comparing DS to Lich, function wise. Im comparing them lore wise.
How do I explain this… my sylvari often says when entering DS “I’m Death Incarnate.”
Well, hes also “Death Incarnate” when in Lich form too (which in most fantasies is a one way permanent transformation, but w/e)
I just find it redundant to have 2 “Death Forms”
If the necro can tap into ther very essence of Death to gain Death Shroud, then what is Lich form?
Granted transforming into a giant lich never really made sense to me. Even less when your a sylvari, charr or asura. I dont think Anet knows what a lich is…
For me, its not about the necro being under or over powered. Its the simple fact that its so very poorly built that bothers me.
Like many people I started the necro wanting to be like the Gw1 (and every necro in every game ever) to be a Minion Master. I quickly found out that the minions are trash. It wasnt until I learned and used other skills, like wells, that I really started to tell how crappy the minions where.
Eventually I realized being able to be a MM necro just wasnt going to be an option. (if I still wanted to have fun playing the game)
So I dropped the necro and tryed the next class inline that could maybe be a good minion master. The Engi and his turrets. he too was a disappointment but Iv managed to make it work for me and still have fun.
Like some others I blame the very poor class mechanic; Death Shroud for holding back the necro. Not only is there a huge issue with trying to balance this pos mechanic but its such a horrible idea I cant believe they implemented it. Its like they held a contest for the worst possible class mechanic and this was the winner.
It depends on your build and play style, so its not a necessity at all. Just a useful trait if your able to use it. If not, no sweat.
Invigorating Speed With Speedy kits is the only ones I can think of that people take just for the medkit.
Seeing as you can have swiftness up 100% with speedy kits, if you add Invigorating speed you also gain 100% up time of Vigor.
Tho this set up to be really effective does require you to switch on then off medkit every 5 sec or so to keep swiftness and vigor up. The swiftness potion helps with that.
But if you can master it, or at least get use to it. your going to beable to be dodging all over the place.
Placing and picking up the turret gives you a good instant heal with the shortest cooldown of all the heal skills you have.
You can also place it and quickly use its overcharge to clear conditions then pick it up.
used like thats its very effective.
Another option would be the medkit. The toolbelt skill gives a nice heal with a short cooldown, but you also have access to the antidote and swiftness potion.
If you take the speedy kits trait you can have swiftness up 100% with the medkit bundle. Which is REALLY useful when traveling and WvW.
I assume this is for sPvP?
Some things you should know.
The deployable turrets doesnt function properly, it works better in sPvP but its still broken. Your healing turret’s toolbelt skill will be repalced with deploy healing turret (at your location)
The healing turrets regen effect doeant scale with your healing, seeing as its from the turret it goes off the turret’s stats which are 0.
Another thing is theres a bug that when the healing turret is removed from the field, the regen drops to 5hp a tick.
Alot of people only tend to use it for the instant heal it offers then picks it back up again for the shorter cooldown.
Because its so much better to use the healing turret only for its instant heal rather than its regeneration buff, your traits are only really going to affect the Rocket turret.
Imo, even if you was able to take every single trait that affected turrets, they still wouldnt make much of a difference. And this is from a guy who started an engi just for the turrets.
Sorry Xel, I disagree
And I respect that.
Maybe your friend should focus on work instead of playing and that wouldnt happen?
Being a ranger in a populare bot spot, going afk so he stand still probably just auto attacks and not replaying to chat. all just increases his chances of being reported as a bot.
Kind like some one talking on a cell phone while driving, They should be focused on driving. But then when you add that they are also trying to apply makeup, drinking coffee and maybe even texting. They are just asking to crash.
I only use it for #4. I find it to be a rather stupid and boring mechanic that doesnt fit the necro at all. I’m constantly at 100% LF because I very rarely use DS. And if my health is ever low enough that I need to use it, I’m dead any way.
I’m use to playing the engi and pressing my swap weapon button to drop my weapon bundles. so I try pressing that to exit DS and all that does is make me equip the wrong weapon when I do exit DS. making me hate it even more. Which really isnt its fault, more of Anets for not regulating this kitten. We have all these different buttons to drop weapon bundles or transformations. But still use the same button to talk to npcs, to pick up loot, to pick up turrets, to pick up banners, to pick up weapon bundles and to activate objects. We have a keyboard full of buttons spread this kitten out. I dont know how many times Iv wanted to grab all my loot in an event but instead of end up picking up some warriors banner or wanting to loot a corpse next to my turret and takeing the turret instead.
If there is one thing I would change in this game, it wouldnt be the bad AI, the broken traits, not even the reanimator. It would be the removal and replacment of DS to somthing that actualy fits the theme of a necro and would be fun to use.
We already have Lich. we dont need 2 “death” modes.
Besides they could just as easly renamed it to Berserk and give it to the warrior. At least there it would make sense.
I cant tell you how disappointed I am that the necro gets such a crappy class mechanic.
Sorry about the rant. I’m just really really disappointed in the game at this point.
We should kill the moron who reported / comaplied all those useless fixes they made
Chances are it was a dev looking for the simplest things to “fix”. Your payed either way, by tackle something hard?
I never understood why a MMO isnt automatically rated M. They cant control what people are going to say ingame, even with in game filters. There for its unfit for small children whos parents dont want them exposed to profanity.
They don’t want you cursing and cussing the air blue. It’s a standard of behavior and manners, not age or maturity.
So its like the precursor to thought crimes.
First they regulate what you can say, next its what you can think. =O
So we became medics? Perhaps a Class namechange should be in order.
We havent been engineers sense… well ever. We are Demolitionists.
Come to think of it. I would LOVE to see the engi split in half creating a Demolitionist class that would be the 3rd heavy armor class with explosives and short ranged shotgun skills and freeing up the engineer to being the ranged support damage dealer that so many people want.
I think the name comes from having 2 Spectral utility skills and using the staff.
I guess it would depend on how you play, But I dont see it being all that effective.
I’m with ya. That was the number 1 thing I was hoping for. With number 2 being improved turrets. I was disappointed on both accounts.
I never understood why a MMO isnt automatically rated M. They cant control what people are going to say ingame, even with in game filters. There for its unfit for small children whos parents dont want them exposed to profanity.
I love that they give you a flame thrower to fight the claw of jormag (stage2 when he is wingless). To fight him “properly” your suppose to safe guard the bomb golems to him. Mainly by destroying the ice pillars.
As stated above, both the pact flame thrower and the engi’s flame thrower requires that you stand perfectly still to hit the ice pillers.
I use the flame thrower on the reg. I know the “face the target” trick so I almost never miss a target. And I even know the “aim at the target” trick to make the skill2 work after using skill3. Both of these I consider bugs, but luckly there are fairly simple work arounds to make them function properly until they are fixed.
Oh, if you target an ice pillar thats behind you and use skill 1 with out moving, your character will face and attack it dealing damage despite your camera facing the other direction. Its like it wants to work right, but when you start to move it just breaks.
I’m not the kind of guy that just says “thats it, I’m done!”. When i quite a game its usualy over given time that I just find my self playing it less and less. Till I get to a point where I’m only checking the forum to see if the next patch will add somthing to bring me back.
So far in the history of my gaming life, going from mmo to mmo. I cant remember I single time when a large patch hasnt let me down.
Chances are in another week I wont even be checking the forums any more.
I had such high hopes for GW2, Much like I had for SC2. I guess when a game is perfect the squeal has no where to go but down.
I’ll just leave this here…
“Harpoon Turret: This turret will now spawn at the engineer when the Deployable Turrets trait is equipped.”
I had an easy time leveling as an engi, far easier than my necro or memser is having.
I used Rifle with 2 turrets and the Lind Mine.
The land mine (I think the skill is actualy Throw Mine) has a really short cooldown and aoe knockback.
That gives you an immobalize, and 2 knockbacks. You can very easly never get hit if you have traits for the faster cooldown on rifle skills.
The turrets, I would suggest rifle for the fast cooldown and some what quick attack speed on it. And the Rocket Turret for the knockdown.
Flame is also another good option due to the smoke field it creates allowing you to keep the target blind for a good little bit.
Stay away from the thumper turret. its really short ranged and doesnt generate agro at all. its a waste imo. Net turret is another one I would advoid for general PvE.
Tho there have been times that the net from my rifle, the net turret AND the net turret from supply drop has been really useful when kiteing a veteran enemy.
As it stands, Med kit is the best option. You have your instant heal that you always have access to. Then when you need to make a quick escape you can pullout the medkit, get some minor heals, clear conditions, and gain swiftness.
Maybe one day they healing turret will be changed so its actually better to keep it deployed rather than deploy and immediately pick it up.
The answer is Yes, It is better to use non-minion abilitys.
People who want to use minions are hopeing that the patch on the 16th will make being a minion master “viable”.
What qualifies as “viable” has been a topic of debate.
I started as a Necro but couldnt take it. The necro isnt what I expected nor wanted. So I jumped ship and changed to my second choice Engi. The engi is now my main and has been max level for a while. I like the turrets alot more than minions.
I find keeping alive turrets is alot easer than minions (yes in dungeons) and turrets feel like they actually matter where my minions tend to die each and every fight (out of dungeons) they are hardly worth summoning.
I also find the engi alot more… obvious? (cant think of how to express this) I can just look at his skills, traits and powers and easly tell how to use them and what to use them with for the best results. With the necro im all confused and most of the time it feels like the skills I use just dont have any impact on the battle at all.
I just click with the engi, tho I really really want to be a necro.
I’m hopeing for some turret love. But the top of my list is that they complacently change the necro so it can be a real MM.
Necro was my first character but then changed to engi because the minions where crap and not even creatively implemented.
Engi was my next choose for the turrets.
Sadly I doubt GW2 will ever have ANY class/build that could even hold a candle to the GW1 mm necro. Makes me sad…
I would drop DS altogether, necro’s dont need 2 undeath modes, DS and Lich. And tbh, it really doesnt sync well with necros at all.
I would replace it with the summon skills, F1-F4 would be Summon Bone Minions, Bone Fiend, Shadow Fiend, and Flesh Golem.
Only thing is you would have to build up enough life force to beable to summon them.
(I would like to change Shadow Fiend to a “Bone” or “Flesh” creature to fit in with the rest and to make it unique and not a shared with hostile mobs.)
Traits would have to be changed to fit. Like Minion Master would cause summon minion spells to cost less life force, instead of a faster cooldown. And Weakening Shroud would change to somthing like applying weakness to enemys around the necro when he summons. And some new traits to replace old ones like one that grants stacks of might (or direct damage/condition damage) based on the amount of life force you have. So hording life force makes you stronger.
The slots that use to contain the summon skills in your utility would instead have Dark Path, A skill dagger necros would really like to have as a utility, im sure.
Doom, Not only adds fear but also acts as an “attack” command for your minions. And Life Transfer, The only real reason to enter DS when your not about to be downed. (shut up elitists, you know its true) The 4th skill will be named “Death Shroud”, but nothing like the current one. Instead its a block skill that deals damage to a melee attacker as well as gaining a boost of life force, anther skill I think Dagger Necros would enjoy, but still very useful for all types.
This would make all necros minion masters to some degree, but not really effect there play style if they want to focus on being condition-mancers.
Much like all mesmers use clones, despite there build, or how all rangers have a single pet despite there build, I feel all necros should have minions despite there build.
To me, your just not a necro with out an army of undead, imo.
*There are some problems with this idea, like what to do with Bone Field and Flesh Wurm. I think Flesh Wurm could be changed to Spirit Wurm and be a Spectral Skill. But unless im allowed to have F1-F5 I dont know what to do with Bone Fiend with out greatly changing it.
While I greatly hope they let my necro be a good minion master, i know its never going to happen. The only chance the necro had to be a good minion master was back in beta. now that its launched and DS is set in stone as the class skill instead of minion management there is little to no hope of the necro ever being what a necro should be.
At the very most I can see them giving all minions ooc healing. but still every minion master necro is going to have the exact same skills/pets out at once. Not because they use just the “best” pets, but because they are the only pets to pick from.
Saddly, even on its best day the GW2 Necro cant hold a candle to the GW1 Necro.
