Question about combos

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

Calling it a Combo is a bit misleading. Its more like enchanting.

Some skills create Combo fields that enchant attacks they pass though them or are used in them.
Then Combo finishers are the attacks that will be enchanted. The most common one is projectiles.
So a simple example to understand it is shooting an arrow through a wall of fire will catch the arrow on fire and apply burring to the target.

What kind of Weapon is a Flamethrower classed as?

hmm… I’m not an achievement hunter so I dont really know what all achievements there are.
If there is a bundle kills achievement its probably that one. Or maybe it grants the kill to the weapon you have equiped. Or it could very well not give a kill to any of them.

I dont have access to the game right now, but couldnt you just write down how many kills you have of each weapon type, kill a few things with the flame thrower then compare?

EDIT: Remembered another one!!. The boat from “The Goonies” is at the end of a jumping puzzle!!

The Engineer stole several of Data’s gadgets as well. Such as the Personal Battering Ram and the Slick Shoes.

I did an event where I had to escort some kids to a hidden treasure and on the way they meet and befriend an etten, I dont recall the names but it made me think of the goonies with the etten taking the role of Sloth.
——
There was an event, or maybe it was a renown mission where you help ogers tame new pets.
Some times they would reply with a line similar to “hug him and squeeze him and name him George.” Which some of you may recognize as a line from a Bugs Bunny cartoon where Hugo the Abominable Snowman wants to keep Bugs as a pet and name him George.

Yes, tho I think the spvp ver still has the healing turret’s toolbelt skill bugged.

There are several trait bugs with the 3 classes iv played; Necro, Engi and now Mesmer.

Makes me wonder if all the classes suffer from broken traits that just dont work.

I think both spider legs and mini tank turrets would look awesome beyond compare!
However I find it very unlikely to happen. And that makes me sad.

I think simply giving us a bigger cooldown refund when picking up turrets would help alleviate the problem of not being able to use turrets in back to back fights.

But dang! It would be awesome to have a rifle, rocket and flame spider bot following me around.

Question when using Caladbolg

in Sylvari

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

I just entered the story mission “A Tangle of Weeds” I was given the sword Caladbolg to do the mission with. I was looking over the skills of the sword when I noticed some have a special icon on them in addition to the casting time and cooldown time.

It looks like a water jug or a gord.
The Daybreak Blade and Flashing Arc (both skill1 attacks) have 1 of whatever this symbol is of.
Skill 2, Electrolyze, has 1
Skill 3, Skyfall, does not have the icon
Skill 4, Twilight Crush, has 5
Skill 5, Maelstrom Strike, has 1

I know the thief class has stamina but I think that icon is a star or asterisk.
I’m a mesmer and from what I can tell this symbol does not seem to affect anything.

Any one know what it means?
Iv yet to actually do the mission so maybe the mission will tell me, But I doubt it.

Also as a mesmer, my clones use the sword, not only do they use several of the attacks the sword has, not just the skill 1 auto-attack, but they actually deal damage with it.
donno if thats a bug or what but its sweet.
Edit: Just noticed I lost my shatter powers, thats probably why clones deal damage.

Transmuting T3 Cultral Weapons

in Sylvari

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

I’m kinda confused here. So I’ll just lay down the facts.

You can use Basic Transmutation stones to merge 2 level 79 or lower items of the same type together. (two Swords, two Great Swords, two cloth boots, ect)
During the process you get to pick 3 things.
1. Which look you want the item to have.
2. Which stats you want the item to have.
3. Which upgrade you want the item to have. (if either weapon has an upgrade in it)

Fine Transmutation stones work the same way only they go all the way up to level 80 items and lower.

You can, and most do, craft your exotic pearl weapon then use a Fine Transmutation stone to change the look to a dungeon weapon, cultural weapon or what ever you like.
I think pearl looks so bad to encourage people to see out one they like and change the look.

Previewing sylvari styled weapons never (at least for me and others Iv spoken with) show all of the weapon, Some reason “stone” (i think it is) part of the sword that makes up the blade never shows. So you can usually only see the part of the weapon made of vines.

As far as I know there are 3 sylvari styled weapon sets; Verdant, Nightmare, and Warden. And while I havent examined them up close , all three do look different.

Edit: I would like to point out that You can give a low level item, like a level 5 sword, the look of a level 80 weapon by using the Fine Transmutation stone.

XelNigma.6315

Theres one story mission I did where a sylvari mentioned that they are immune to the dragon’s undeath power but they didnt know why. My guess is the Elder dragons have equal power and cant corrupt each others minions.

The dragons make their minions by corrupting things around them, most use living creators like branded and risen, but not all, like destroyers.

Now who else corrupts things to bolster their ranks?
The Nightmare court!
Not only do they have sylvari and fern hounds, they also have several creatures under there control, like spiders, wurms, and panthers.
Even plant creations from simple bomb plants to walking plant husks to a big evil wishing tree.

sorry about getting off topic, I love theorycrafting.

My vote, Mordramoth is the Earth/Nature Dragon.
I also would not be surprised if an NPC in game calls the Deep Sea dragon “Bubbles” at some point. Just as a nod to the fans. You know.

2 the Diessa Plateau load screen looks like 3 humans, one with a horned helm. I assumed it was the Separatists. the area they are looking at (seeing as the sword is drawn probably to attack) looks alot like an early rendering of the Town of Nolan.

thats my opinion on this matter.

Which healing skill to use?

in Engineer

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

Oh healing turret, I would like to see the initial healing and regeneration buff remove and replaced with a rapid healing pulse. at lvl 80 being healed 130 every second is way way WAY too minor. that needs pumped up to something more like 600 every half second, or so, maybe less. Its hard to tell without actually being able to use it in combat if thats too much or too little.

The overdrive can remove conditions and apply regeneration.

The healing turret should not be used for burst healing. The engi already has 2 other healing skills for that.

Which healing skill to use?

in Engineer

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

I use medkit, the Tool belt skill is a nice heal, and the med kit it self comes with nice options.

I would like to point out that the healing turret’s regeneration doesn’t scale with your healing stat despite what its tool tip might read. at lvl 80 it will heal 130 a tick, which is what other regeneration skill heal for when you have 0 healing. There is also a bug with it that will cause it to heal only 5 once the healing turret is destroyed.
So if you build up say 20 seconds of healing turret regen, then it dies you have to wait for 20 seconds before you can be healed by other regeneration effects that would heal you more.

Several people do like to place the healing turret for the initial heal, then immediately destroy it to take advantage of the very brief water combo field that causes an area healing effect. Gives a nice heal and has a short cooldown. I hope one day the healing turret will be “fixed” so its better to use it as a turret than as a burst heal.

Melee engineer?

in Engineer

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

You would think with all the short ranged and melee ranged skills we have, the engi would be in heavy armor.

I think a few people have tried going melee, but I never hear back from them. (they died!)

Iv never tried it, but if you are, may I recommend taking a flame turret? Its overcharge creates a smoke combo field that will keep you safe for a time.
The rifle as your weapon might be better than the pistol/shield, simple for the blunderbuss as a strong melee hit (closer than melee if you want to get technical), jump shot to close ground and charged shot to make some room if you have to get away. The nets great too.

in Engineer

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

Instead of adding new abilities, would it not be better to simply increase the cooldown refund when picking up the turrets?
I dont know the exact numbers, but I think you only get a 10% refund when pick up the turrets, I would like to see it increased to something worthwhile, maybe a 50% or more. Maybe base it on the turrets remaining health.

How to implement the "ranged kit" for rifles.

in Engineer

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

I seen some one suggest this a while back. And I liked it. Only to be fair the pistol(s), shield, and harpoon would also need a second weapon skill set.

It could be incorporated as part of the class function. seeing as our current tool belt tends to be packed full of under performing skills with longer than necessary cooldowns with only a few exceptions.

Best duo combo with engi?

in Engineer

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

If your friend plays like I do, Rifle, 2 turrets and land mines, he will place 0 combo fields for you. (not that they seem very impressive any way) and tbh, the useful engi skills dont place combo fields, imo.

I would suggest a ranged fighter, but it greatly depends on your 2 play styles. if your friend is like me, again rifle, 2 turrets and land mines, the enemy wont beable to get to you due to the immobilized and knockbacks he will be dishing out.
Maybe try an elem, there pretty squishy on there own but with an engi keeping things at bay you might have fun with the class.

Leveling as Mesmer - a horrible experience

in Mesmer

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

I’m only a lowly lvl 25 mesmer, and its pretty bad. Single mobs are fine, the mesmer is designed for 1v1. but if you have to fight 3+ enemys at once, your in trouble.

And dont even get me started on story missions. Never have I had to restart from check points so much. My engi never had to do that. its going to be a nightmare later when my missions start having me fighting the risen thralls.

I think part of my problem personally is im going from a range/support fighter (more or less) with very useful utilitys like turrets and weapon kits to this lightly armored short ranged (dual swords) mesmer with, imo, very crappy utility powers.
I’m having to get use to pretty much an opposite play style.

I’m sure after I unlock most of my utilities and play with my traits I’ll come to understand the mesmer much like I have my other character and it will all come together. But until then its hell.

Any words on Engineer changes?

XelNigma.6315

I have to agree with nofo on most of the points.

And yes the hipshot looks kitten stupid. I dont know about you other races but my charr’s coat flys up each time he shoots. It looks like I’m trying to be Marilyn Monroe standing on an air vent.

Skills like the Blunderbuss even look stupid if you have one of the sniper rifle weapons equipped.

Heres an idea, replace blunderbuss with a machinegun styled attack, have it use the spread styled similar to poison darts (and change poison darts to act like volly shot, aka not randomly around the target but AT the target) have it still apply bleeding, fires maybe 8 shots really fast. This way it still has the “deals more damage the closer you are” aspect but also can be used at ranged and be effective against groups at a distance. Can call it Clip Discharge.

Replace skill 5 with a grenade launcher, as rifles tend to come with grenade launcher attachments, and the the engi seems to be all about the ordinance. have it add vulnerability in 2 stages. a direct hit adds 6 vulnerability while the “splash zone” only applys 3. maybe even have the direct hit deal more damage than the “splash zone”.

And there you have it,
Skill 1 – Ranged damage
Skill 2 – Ranged immobilize
Skill 3 – Heavy close ranged damage/moderate ranged damage, with varying stacks of bleeding on one or many targets.
Skill 4 – Emergency “get out of my face” skill
Skill 5 – Ranged aoe damage and vulnerability

Skills still pretty much do the same a they do now, just with out the need to be in the enemys face and the skills are even cooler with still having an engineer feel to them.
——
First lets assume the flamethrower bugs are fixed, they would be skill 1 hits 5 targets instead of 3, it can hit objects while your moving, the flame graphic follows the hit zone. and Skill 2 doesnt fail after using skill 3. I’m sure there is more I just have forgot them.

skill 1, once fully fixed seems alright to me. maybe move the burn effect to the middle of the casting instead of the end. but w/e
skill 2, needs an option to detonate early.
skill 3 seems fine.
skill 4; napalm needs to apply cripple to any one that walks though it as well as the burn. maybe even a stun or knockdown when they walk into it. It needs to act as a barrier to limit enemy movement.
I would change skill 5 create a smoke area instead of the 1 time blindness. Maybe just take the flame turret’s over charge and copy it over to here would work fine.

engi is a good combo...er?

in Engineer

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

I dont view the engi as being a “good combo-er” as many people have said, the combo fields and finishers are kinda funky to use.

To me, to say a class is a good combo-er, that means they can place and use combo fields naturally, as in they dont have to go out and make placing and using combo fields as there main goal. But thats exactly what an engi has to do if he wants to place and use combo fields.

It should be a byproduct of abilities they would regularly use, not something they have to go out of there way to get.

Engineer turret targetting- epitome of stupid

in Engineer

XelNigma.6315

Have you tryed fighting Shatter, Tequatl or Claw of Jormag? I do alot and it seems turrets refuse to target dragons even when there are no other options. Iv placed my rifle and rocket turret to face off an edge just so I could see them turn to see if they would shoot at the dragon. They never turned. That test was with jormag after his wings where blown off.

Other problems is turrets want to shoot at structures long after they have been destroyed. Trying to use turrets anywhere there are enemy “supply creates” is a waste.

Healing Turret

in Engineer

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

When you use there overcharge function it doesnt make them use that ability immediately, It simply changes there normal “attack” to the overcharged effect.
So if you tell your healing turret to use its overcharge function, Cleansing Burst, it’s normal healing effect is replaced with it.
So like Twengyne said, you have to wait for its next pulse to gain the effect. This is true with all turrets.

What Daredent is talking about is when you self destruct a turret it counts a combo finisher: blast. Your healing turret’s normal healing pulse creates a very short lasting water combo field.
So if place your healing turret, let is use it normal healing pulse (which it does immediately) then self destruct it, it will create a combo effect of Area healing.
This has nothing to do with what your asking about.

Casting Ground Targeting suggestion.

in Suggestions

Posted by: XelNigma.6315

XelNigma.6315

Simple suggestion to speed things up.
Make it so if you try to cast a spell/skill that uses ground targeting beyond its max range then instead of giving you the message that its out of range, simple have it cast AT max range in that direction.

We see the red circle, we know its beyond our reach, but some times its not about hitting the target, skills like Blink and Jump shot are often used for out of combat mobility, and its a hassle finding our max range while on the move.

Another MF hate topic. Getting old guys.

I think the problem is the way people are looking at it. Its hard for me to explain so I’ll do it as a hypothetical.
Lets say for the sake of argument, that when you have a full 5 man team, you get a team power score. Now a perfectly balanced team with the best gear in game would score a 1,000. Each person would be adding 200 points to the score.

Now the problem is if someone only scores a 150 they are seen as “hurting the group” 50 points instead of seeing it at contributing 150 points to the group.

Its kinda like that, but with “You play my way or you dont play” mixed in.

Plenty of mmos launch when they should remain in beta, its very common place.

And you are right, theres so many things on the engineer that just arnt working. They need fix first before they can even think about balancing the class.

As an player that picked the engineer for the turrets, the trait that should allow me to deploy my turrets using ground targeting is a game changer. And thats just 1 trait. There are several others that dont work that would also be game changers.
Once all that is working properly THEN they should start working on balancing.

How to fix botting.

XelNigma.6315

I like the idea of a the test after being reported.
Tho it will need some limits to prevent abuse. Such as, if the same person reports on the suspected bot again before 24hrs the test wont be given. It has to be from three different people with in a 24hr time setting. and all 3 must be failed.
Being Idle, must not count as a failed bot test.
also it needs to be implemented in a way so that it cant be used to grief people.
For example, If the test shows up the instant the person is reported it could be used to kill people if a griefer waits for the target to engage combat then report them. Maybe have the test appear at random several minutes after the report is sent.

After the three failed bot tests, the account should be temporarily banned for the day.
Until a human can review the reports and determine if the suspected user was actually using a bot. In which case they get perma-banned as usual.

When and when not to salvage?

in Crafting

I’m a newly lvl 80 engi, and I need both money and crafting mats.
Mainly the crafting mats that let me craft exotics, so far iv only had enough to craft my self a helm (that looks really ugly on a charr) and an ugly pearl rifle.

I started hunting the 3 dragons for the loot, other than that dungeons seem to be the only way to gain money.

So far Iv been using a white salvage kit on white items, selling the blues, using Mystic salvage kit on green items, and tossing yellows into the mystic forge.

I’m wondering how other people salvage stuff. I’m thinking of salvaging yellow armors and only toss in weapons. What little I know about these (pre)legendary items, they only come in weapon form.
or if maybe I should sell the green items and salvage the blues instead.
