I guess my build was 25/30/15/0/0 for max damage and condi cleanse. Seems to be the best way to play a thief in PvE. You have enough damage to deal serious damage but also are you able to help yourself with condi remove on stealth. This makes you less vulnerable to burn, bleed and stuff.
Also go full Zerker. Do NOT go for conditions, since you will deal 99% just direct damage in PvE. I recommend to use Sword/Pistol and Dagger/Dagger in general. For range AoE take the Shortbow and for a single target boss go for Pistol/Pistol and Dagger/Dagger.
Same goes for Elite: AoE = Dagger storm, Boss = Thiefs.
New players seem to feel forced to PICK skills and use them forever. But keep in mind, you are still able to switch them all the time Same as the weapons!

Obviously a bug .. no patchnotes and it would just be silly… However I disagree with the less phantasm style. It would be just nice to delte the “retaliation for phantasms” trait and replace it with “10 sec invulnerability for phants after summon”. So we could actually deal some zerg stuff. But btt:
It actually IS really annoying that in every patch something happens that has to be “repaired” over serval months. Like the warden now or the CS in the past … Just hotfix such heavy mistakes like warden and now illusions. Soundbug of CS was ok tough.

It’s really “hilarous” how in every patch the mesmer gets more and more bugged. The warden still bugs around since months! I doubt that they will be able to hotfix this issue too >_> This is by far the biggest issue I have with ANet – they break things, well thats ok, but they don’t fix them right after.

i think i do ok damage i do 15k rapid fires and 2-3k normal shots i dont know what people are talking about

This way you spread 4x 3 stacks might for 20+ sec. You can also add the elite for another blast finisher, but you have no more time in the same fire bomb for it. You can also cast it on yourself while using F1 for a aoe heal.
Learn this rotation and you will be beloved as engineer!

Phants are not 50%-70% of a mesmers damge, more like vice versa. However yea, nice video showing the mesmers damage. Now image you would have been using sigil of battle for +10%~ dmg by yourself, or didnt spam BF if not needed would increase your damage too btw. Mesmer sword deals pretty good damage, yes.

The SB has medium damage, but is good for kiting and a no-go in dungeons. The LB is just for those “do-not-touch” dungeon bosses. The axe however deals pretty good damage, especially with combo fields and (for your pet) RaO. It requires however at least 2 targets to be effective. But to be honest, even against one target + a horn buff makes it stronger than the SB due its passive damage.
I keep going Sword/Axe + Axe/Horn in dungeons as a permaswapper for tons of buffs.

Well the axe mainhand still hits harder than the SB if there are more than 1 enemy. Soloing I allways use it in combination with the torch, especially 2 + 5 burn pretty nicely.
I’ve been checking out my future traits and I beleve that the only way to play the ranger is a perma swapper, like the mesmer. There are so many good “on weapon swap” boons, I need that definitly. And the bows are no range option if i get low somehow, so I go for the axe + torch / horn. Axe seems pretty bad against one target tough.

I’m not talking about the damage the mesmer does, I’m talking about the damage the mesmer creates when he’s present in a party. Subject Alpha for example: The more exact it dies right when TW ends, the more % damage of your whole team have you done.
Let’s say Alpha has 405’000 HP. Everyone deals 6000 DpS but you. The “weak” mesmer goes for it’s 3000 DpS without phants (since they die). Now you cast TW and Alpha dies at exact 10 sec. Everyone did 9000 DpS and you did 4500 becuse of TW. In this scenario TW itself dealt 135’000 damage, the Mesmer alone did 30’000 wich is 165’000 damage = 33% of the damage the party does was yours. The mesmer. If the party needs longer than 10 sec the % damage the mesmer TW did shrinks. However it will still be 20%~ together with the mesmers dps. And Alpha is a bad scenario without phants.
Same goes for Engi vulnerability, Ranger frost spirit, spotter, warr banner etc. In the end it’s better to have ’em all.

Well I actually have played everything except endgame ele and guard. And yes – they all do about 20% of a party damage.

Every mob in PvE that does not attack permanently has a CD on it’s “basic attack” wich gets increased by chilled. So yea, chilling enemies in PvE is extremly strong.

Your pet have to be in combat to trigger this trait. Let it attack and use “Mighty roar” for example and the mightstacks will have ~ 24sec duration.
Really? I just threw the trait away after I used it and had those 16 instead of 15 sec too… God they really bug this class, like the 4.5 instead of 9 sec fury on weapon swap >_>

I’ve made both, they are about the same in dungeons, just deal damage and spawn some banners / spirits for support. As for me, the warrior is ridiculously boring. In the end it doesn’t really matter damage wise.

Back in my days, Staff used to grant Protection (4) on cast aswell Aegis on first and last tic (5). Back in my days, the staff used to be good in PvE. Back in my days, the staff 4 and 5 had 30 sec cd.

Even with 3 phantasms up (which doesn’t happen that often), your damage output will get outshined by other classes.
Are you playing condition damage or what? There is actually no class that can oudamage 3 iSwordsmen/Duellists/Warlocks against a single target.
Sword aa hits pretty hard too. It’s just that the Mesmer shows many tiny numbers, however if there would stay the 7k damage of a full aa rotation he suddenly would be strong …
But ye, it’s ture. A huge part of the Mesmer’s damage is passive damage wich never makes it into calculations. TW hits for 125’000-500’000 ~, Reflection hits not only directly, it also prevents damage = no dodge / heal = ally rotation keeps going. etc etc etc.
However to say “Mesmer deals miniscule damage” is just wrong.

Never have been kicked tbh. However I will kick any ranger at 30+ fotm when they are doing bearbow without spirit or spotter…
Sword + Axe = best damage, pull, reflection, vulnerability.
Offhand Axe + Warhorn = higher short range dps than SB + buffs + combo field user, petbuffer with elite.
GS is pretty bad since it deals less damage than the sword, has less evades and is in general just worse.
SB just for kiting, nogo in dungeons.
LB just for “do not touch” enemies, like fire ele in fotm, or twins endboss f ex.
Dagger is a nogo.
Torch is a pretty ok weapon, espeically with axe offand and mainhand. However horn is better in dungeons and axe offhand is a 100% must have.

I’m quite new to the ranger I have to say. I’m more talking about my expirience in general in GW2 combined with a 40 ranger ^^. Also PvE only what I say! However I have no bear, nor using the SB / LB much, wich seems to be a good sign.
Ty for the hints Wondrouswall, helps me a lot. How about the devourers? One does have a nice barrage wich should grant you much might? Also all attacks are 2 hits aren’t they?

It’s not awful, it’s extremly strong with a high dps. Aslong as you do not chain it automaticly you can escape and dodge perfectly with a roll, 2 and 3. It has great mobiliy and combinations like 2 + axe 4 or 2 + swap to axe mainhand / swap to range pet and 2 again.
It is just as good as you are.

Well the mesmer seems to be the highest dps underwater, isn’t he?
Spear 2 feels like “CHOO CHOO MTAFKA”
Spear 3 hits hard aswell.
Spear 5 the only and best pull underwater
Trident 2 is awesome too damage wise and blind
Trident 5 so will be awesome too against bosses, even damage wise
And our basics are extremly strong too

keep the vulnerability stacks at 25, even against bosses who have reduced debuff duras (especially here he shines)
How to do this without food / giver’s weapons?
Bufffood is requires against champs+. Cheapest is from that dragonpolter event. +40% condi dura for a few silver. Awesome stuff … and tastes good too! ^.^
I personally prefer thumper turret to elixir gun, while elixir gun will grant more might uptime total and more utility
Indeed it seems to have way more blast finishers for might. However utility wise? Elixier gun heal, cleanse and a high dps field / escape makes it better for utility. Probably gonna switch it more often with the turret now, ty for that input!
Single target is the only DPS that matters. Unless you’re in fractals, no one cares if you can do “40k+ dps” on trash when you run past most of it in this game anyways, or fight 2-4 targets at a time most of the time.
The whole point of my response was to call out your BS on saying engineers do as much damage as elementalists in single target. (ie. boss fights)
The only DpS that metters? Tell me one dungeon that has no aoe damage to be done. Even 1-4 targets are enought to deal the same damage. The engi deals definitly the same, even more damage on single target too, however he does it more passive than active, requires a good hitting team. Mightstacks are a part of it, but mainly the vulnerability makes the big+. Without an engineer vuln against bosses is stuck at 10-15 stacks. The engi will grant the team at least 10 stacks. 10% more damage for 5x at least 5k dps hitters = 2.5k passive damage without even attacking. Ye – the engi pretty much outdamages the ele, however 1 engis won’t outdamage 1 ele … passive damage <3
I’m not gonna argue that Ele’s are really strong with single target. Especially Fire Staff with 2x Elementals. Engi’s, depending on the build, are definitely one of the better DPS though. On par or higher then a lot of DPS builds.
AoE does matter in PvE, I used to think otherwise but I’ve since changed my mind. Trash that you don’t skip can be just as time consuming as boss fights and in some cases harder. Even Rifle/SD is competitive with a majority of classes if others are applying Might and Vulnerability. I’ve tested a number of builds across almost all classes and Engi’s do quite well and can bring a ton of utility to the group.
People that refuse to bring an Engi are simply ignorant.
I consider condition damage in PvE extra damage when I can get the ticks, I don’t rely on it though. In testing Rampager’s Grenades ranks highest, in practice Zerker will out perform it simply because of the crappy condition mechanics.
