Just pm me for my advice! Always eager to help!”
The GS actually IS a good weapon, as long as you penetrate and won’t use 1 in close combat. It is a good aoe weapon, thx to the iZerker. Single target dps however isn’t as strong as you may think. The scepter hits more in closer combat, aswell the staff thx to iWarlock (requires 4+ permacondis).
GS = ranged aoe
Scepter + Pistol = close range single target dps +block
Staff = any range single target dps +survivability
I’d recommend Sword/Focus + GS even for a beginner. It’s ok to melee, especially since you can swap all the time. You got a good evade so it’s not that hard to stay alive
Rotation:
Sword 3 -> Focus 5 -> Sword 3 -> Sword 1 until the enemy starts to attack -> Sword 2 -> Sword 1 until the enemy starts to attack again -> dodge back, swap weapon.
Rotation:
GS 2 -> GS 4 -> (if required heal signet -> GS 4) -> GS 3 -> GS 1 while attacking the farest target, try to take adventage of line damage (3x dmg) -> GS 2 -> swap to sword again.
Sigil of battle is recommended

Malrona is the spider in TA. Reflecting her is as amusing as reflecting the hammer dude from wall fractale for 80k hits.
btt: Staff isn’t that bad in pve, it’s auto attack is pretty ok tbh, it hits overall for 1-2k, double if bouncing. However yes, you do only take the staff if:
The staff is as much a power weapons as it is a condi weapon. You could go for staff + sword/focus + mantraspam as a supporter, wich sometimes makes sense. However the staff is (like any mesmer weapon) situational and should be switched depending on enemies.
As for a good build → I really ended up with 10/30/0/30/0. It feels still like the best build that exists right now in terms of utility and damage. However it allows no lazyness.
I don’t think it’s worth to spend 15 points in illusions for +6% damage wich only counts for you instead of 100 power and 17% phant damage or 10% crit dmg and 5% crit change and mantra 8% damage. Sure you got your -20% cdr on illusion summonings, however you also sacrifice a 3rd inspiration slot wich is in my opinion essential!!
Keep your phants, only shatter them to interrupt an important attack (F3) or make yourself invulnerable (F4). You also may use it for finish burst (F1). However when engaging the enemy, for examle trash mobs, you can just summon 1-2 clones and shatter them right away with F1. Even one clone is enough since the damage per clone decreses if you shatter multiple clones:
1 clone 100%
2 clones 150%
3 clones 200% → 66.7% per clone
Hello my mesmer friend!
In general you should go melee with sword, since it’s the only weapon that really deals much damage. Only ranged if required.
As for a build, as a beginner I recommend 20/20/0/30/0 or 10/20/0/25/15 or 0/30/0/25/15. The first one is very noob-friendly, however not really useful if you know how to play. It’s more for GS users -> beginners. The 2nd and 3rd are meta builds, the 2nd is for a glamour build (nullfield, feedback, blink) the 3rd is for mantras (still using feedback, just switch healskill and nullfield for mantras).
If you are higher skilled you should find “your personal” build, as for me for example it definitly is 10/30/0/30/0:
I have played 10/20/0/25/15, 0/30/0/25/15 and a long time ago 20/20/0/30/0. However I really ended up with 10/30/0/30/0. It feels still like the best build that exists right now in terms of utility and damage.

With 10/30/0/30/0 you got everything but the 20% cdr for illusions. A 3rd inspiration trait can be so much more useful for your party. There are so many amazing traits there:
- glamour cdr
- feedback on ress (npc!)
- glamour dura (with ^ 80% reflection uptime)
- focus trait
- healing mantras (800 HpS if required + makes mantra heal op)
- condicleanse on heal (extremly strong with mantra heal)
- +20% phant HP (defender, situational ofc)
I pick 3 instead of 2 of those makes so much sense. I can’t find a reason to not go up to 30 in inspiration.
However I do not recommend this kind of playstyle for beginners. It requires to change traits according to enemies, wich you first all need to know.

No no, iMage casts Moa Morph! On a 10s CD.
Downside… it could be reflected…
Upside… back to the phantasm. And we all know how deadly phantasm moas are … xD I love this bug <3

“Spider or devourer for pve?” and you guys are talking about Drakes and Kitties
btt:
Definitly 100% spider! They deal like 50% more damage. A cave spider requires 34 sec to kill a light golem at the mists, the forest spider requires 35 sec. The lashtail devourer however requires 41 sec without tunneling or knockback, or even 54 with tunneling and knockback! Devourers aren’t even worth taking just for RaO.
In general use the cave spider. She has the best F2 for groups due the long vulnerability. Also good on dangerious enemies (weakness). The jungle spider just looks kitten good and is pretty ok / good for solo open world or enemies that regenerate (like CoF p1 endboss).
it amuses me that a shark is weaker underwater than a cat … A CAT!!!
nightmare court doggy <3 YES
Travelers aren’t that great in pve, more wvw roaming. Focus is enough for open world.
Scholar or ruby orbs … however I recommend ruby orbs, since the difference is tiny due the fact that phants won’t be affected by % dmg increases.
Also keep in mind, soon the runes will be reworked, so don’t spend too much for them right now, they may become useless, yet another one may become superior for the mesmer.
→ Ruby Orbs
is this with F2 or without? (might kitty)
Thats why he doesn’t want zerker – noobs …
That vid must be hurting a warriors hearth pretty much right now
I guess we spent a looong explosive but pretty cool evening together huehue … everyone died o.O
Carpboy is totally right, especially for leveling! Also just buy plenty of different runes that got +10 power as first stat, so you can get +60 power with your armor. Don’t waste much cash on jewelry btw.
so … EU ? SAY YES >.<
NO! NONONONONO! Don’t give up already!! It sounds harder than it is. It’s like … like … learning how to poo into the toilet! Once you learned it it’s just a routine … most of the time ö.ö kitten.
Keep going, play engi, he’s ultra fun and a bit harder BUT rewarding!
May I ask you: do you play on EU or NA? Maybe I can meet you ingame once
It’s really hard to stay calm while talking to somone such short minded like you … I’ll say it a last time, in baby language, idc if you finally get it or not:
Warrior damage = bambam by weapon + bannerbuffs
Ranger damage = less bambam by weapon + spirit / spotter
Warrior damage > Ranger damage
Party with 3 what-ever’s + Warrior + Warrior = 3x pengpeng + 2x bambam + 1x banners.
Party with 3 what-ever’s + Warrior + Ranger = 3x pengpeng + 2x bambam + 1x banners + 1x spirit / spotter.
1x spirit / spotter > the differene of the warrior bambam and the ranger bambam.
Do – you – under – stand – now? O.O
This is good AND IT MAKES TOTAL SENSE!!! +1!!
DO IT NOW!!
Cutie, you are the one who’s crying, not me.
2 warriors deal more damage than 2 rangers, yes. And since you’ve made this comparison I know you don’t get what I was talking about -> passive damage…
Even if your main is a ranger and you have been at fotm 50 (I am too, it’s nothing to boast with) or pvp / wvw wich has nothing to do with pve damage setups … it just seems that you have played the ranger “wrong” or have been blindfolded by the invisible part you do. Ranger UP … no.
Read my post again and think about it once more, maybe you’ll get it sometime.
greez
And here we see a common “I just ignored passive damage in return of big fat numbers”.
Seriously, no they aren’t.
a damage CANT be passive, perhaps a buff.
and sry if you are playing a different Game but now, in GW2, PVE is a DPS Race.
:DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
I’ll make an easy example for you:
Team A:
3 randoms with a dps of 5’000, a warrior with a dps of 7’000 and a ranger with a a dps of 5’000. This team has a DpS of 27’000.
Team B:
3 randoms with a dps of 5’000, two warriors with a dps of 7’000. This team has a DpS of 29’000.
But the adventage of Team A is that they got a ranger, wich can create a frost spirit and spotter for about +10% damage. So his team now has a DpS of 29’700 due the Rangers PASSIVE DAMAGE.
My god … even if it’s just a silly example, how can you say “passive damage does not exist” … It’s what the game counts on: might, vlunerability, aoe % dmg and crit buffs in general, time warp, aegis and heals for not having to dodge or recover to deal more damage etc etc etc.
I beleve you are a main warrior yourself, aren’t you?
To provide a bit more context, just keep in mind if you drop a smoke bomb and then a fire bomb, you’re not necessarily going to always get a blast finisher that stacks might.
You’re right, this should provide stealth
I don’t believe you’re correct with regards to pulsing fields. The effects pulse, but I don’t think that refreshes the field.
I can drop Napalm (which does not pulse) and then a Smoke Bomb on top of it (which does). No matter how many blast finishers I use (I just tested 5) I will never get stealth. Similarly I can drop Super Elixir followed by Fire Bomb. When I use all my blast finishers they all give retaliation, though if the fire field pulsed it should have over written the light field at some point.
Weird. I remember using double fields like Super Elixir + Fire Bomb in the past and getting stuck with Area Retaliation, but maybe that was a bug that has been fixed.
Good to know.
Depents on what you enter first or what has been created first if there is nothing to enter. Read the 2nd part of my long post up there, it explains it well
And here we see a common “I just ignored passive damage in return of big fat numbers”.
Seriously, no they aren’t.
Spotter, Frost Spirit, AoE revive for bad days, reflection, pull, buffing kitty, good damage – yea, I guess the ranger is pretty ok for a party. I prefer ranger + warrior over 2 warriors. It’s a huge damage increase.
I can only talkt about PvE and there the engi is the hardest class to play. It’s not like you won’t be able to manage it, but he has a huge potential and the best example of what I mean by that is this:
Drop heal turret → big ol’ bomb → fire bomb → explode turret after fire bomb goes off → big ol’ explodes → switch to shield and double click 4 → switch to elixier gun and use skill 4 → double click weaponswap for no knockback. Do all that within 3 seconds to grant 12 stacks might for 20+ seconds to all your allies.
In contrast, the Guard presses a single button and does the same (for a shorter duration however).
This is just one example of what you are able to do, same goes for massive heal or looooong stealth. You can do much but it won’t excuse mistakes.
bump ò.ó!!
bump ò.ó!!
Well but they will disappear somewhere, don’t they? o.O like 2k range??
My Static Discharge Engi <3
Well if 1 is the worst and 10 the best you just earned a sexy 11 o.O JINX

Well then …. it seems that it’s time to “puts sunglasses on” edit the Wiki!
YEAAAAAAAAA
Oh my …
@ Adamantium:
Just go test it with for example a light field of the elixier gun, wich lasts 10 sec, AFTER it cast a fire bomb, walkt into the overlapping part, finisht → might.
@ ellesee:
It still has nothing to do with pulses, since every field is either active or not. It does not refresh.
I probably should make a video ’bout this. That the wiki is (I beleve more in my own testing than in the wiki tbh) wrong, just proves that it has been written by humans too.
My main and beloved Madame E. Le Blanc! <3
I just have 3 questions to you guys!
greeeez ^.^
You’re right there are some intricacies that can’t just be answered with “first come first served”. Though we were all talking about blast finishers here (again, please read the thread) which 100% follow the rule because that’s how it works.
I did read the thread – “again” – I was also talking about blast finishers in the 2nd part, the first one was just an explanation. It does NOT follow that rule if YOU are the blast finisher and are NOT standing in the combo fields when they go off! I’ll explain later…
Projectiles and leaps are different because of the possibility to move through different fields as you point out. Those indeed will activate off the first field they go through. If there is a conflict in fields it will revert to the rule of “first come first served”. For example if you are standing in multiple fields and you leap, you will activate the oldest field just as if you were blasting.
This is correct.
There can be fields on the exact same spot, so you can enter them at the same time? I’m not sure about this, since I’ve not tested it with somone (use fire and smoke bomb and let somone enter). I guess it would be either the “First-come-first-served” thing or simply waiting for the first tic a bomb does (so you gain the “in a fire field” tag). Anyone knows this for sure?
greez
Again, this is part of how the game works. There’s nothing to really figure out. First field down always takes priority. Always. Every time.
Tested and confirmed. “First-come-first-served” Is correct here. Pulses have no effect.

Yup, Adamantium is 100% correct here. Pulsing combo fields have no other effect than “on” or “off”. They do not overwrite each other. It’s simply the “Enter>First-come-first-served”-Rule i just made up
“Enter>First-come-first-served”
means that the blast finisher will proc that field the producer of the finisher entered first. After that, the “First-come-first-served” rule hits.
This means, if there are 2 combo fields on the same spot, one has 300 range fire, the other has 200 range smoke. The smoke one gets dropped first, the fire 2nd.
Now you enter both fields and stay in the middle of them, using (as engineer) the blast finisher of the shield, you will grant MIGHT to the allies, since YOU are the producer, or better; the “projectile” that entered the fields.
If you were a thief, using shortbow 2, it would grant stealth, since there is no projectile, just an explosion that goes off where it lands -> “First-come-first-served” (the visual project and the explosion are independent to each other).
If there are 2 combo fields on the same spot, both have 200 range, the smoke one gets dropped first, the fire 2nd, the “First-come-first-served” rule hits, since you entered both at the same time.
So in the end, the “Enter>First-come-first-served” rule is just an addition that means: "If there are multiple fields on the ground, overlapping each other, you will allways proc that field YOU entered first, regardless wich one is “First-come”, as long as YOU are the one who IS the explosion finisher."
Destroying turrets causes the explosion finisher on YOU, since it’s YOUR toolbelt. So you can put a turret into a fire field and stay in a water field and explode it to grant a heal. This means you can put and explode a turret via “E>Fcfs” rule and grant what you want. The big’ol’bomb however does not work like that since it’s the explosion finisher itself!
Long wall’o’text but worth reading, I hope you all understand and agree.
Gn8 Greez! ^^
I tought it’s the same bomb :o Maybe it is not affected by traits and sigils etc.
Thank you already, keep coming!
I allways heared “Full Zerker sux at WvW” and now you guys tell me to go for it? :O Did I miss something? xD I tought Power, Vita and Toughness is the way to go? O.o
you should get the valentines daggers!
If there is a huge mass of enemies (10+), you simply can use daggerstorm combined with the healng signet and this makes you literally invulnerable for 8 seconds. Oh + you are dealing excellent damage. Daggerstorm DpS is awesome when used against many mobs.
I need to make new ones -.-’’ Rawr ….
ranged combat … hah …
btt: as for me the Mesmer is definitly the funnies class to play, but has a terrible start tought … until 40
Engineer is also a lot of fun, aswell Thief! The ranger seems funny too, but a bit simpler than the others. Ele is ok aswell Guard. Necro and Warrior are boring.
There is no base attack damage btw :P There is just a scaling ^^
Yea … playing for so long my Mesmer, but only PvE. I’ve been a few time in WvW but never had fun there. It was allways a long walking and nothing happens. But yesterday with a few friends, we had a fun time! I guess roaming is what I want to try, since Zerg fight seem just … meh … nothing for me
Since I’ve been PvEing all the time, I’ve just my full zerker equip in ascended stuff. My question is now: What are the stats a roaming mesmer should go in WvW? Is the only option condition damage? Is it possible to use some of my zerker gear?
How about Power, Vita, Toughness with Zerker trinkers and weapons?
And what are the commin builds for WvW? Weapons? I’m really like 0 expirienced there and I have noone that could help me ingame
Greez – counting on you!
You should press “Caps Lock” once – then edit your post …
Yes forgot about that one. For skipping just swap in the Elixier S, however in combat it’s just useful against hard enemies. Maybe against Mai for stealth against cannon. The actual Elixier S is a long CD invulnerability. In normal combat you won’t need it, since some blast finishers are simply better.
They once released a popularity list, most played class. It’s a bit older but here you go:
http://guildwars.incgamers.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/gw2.jpg
Agree too with spam heal and let it explode. It’s by far the best burst heal. If you need less heal however you can just drop it, use it and pick it up again for a short CD heal with condi cleanse. I rarely do that since I like the water splash
In general just use fire field for might. Use the heal turret, big old bomb, fire bomb, wait till it explodes, boom the turret and use shield 4 aswell elixier gun 4 or any other finishers. So you share 12 stacks might for 20+ sec.
If you need heal, use water fields instead, also a good option.
Sometimes you need a long stealth, you can get up to 12 sec stealth with that combination too, the probelm is IF you hit something with it you will break your own stealth. So it’s often a good idea for example to ress somone, to drop a smoke bomb, use shield 4 and / or turret and explode it to safely ress him/her.
PvE is most of the time S/P and D/D, against bosses P/P and for aoe Shortbow isntead of daggers. D/D deals more damage than S/P, backstab does much damage, however you obvously need to stay behind the enemy to really feel the damage. Then dagger 2 at 25%> HP is outdamaging everything.
I just had to hit the train ^^ So it kinda became a “pop quiz” on accident xD.
I’ve watched the vids and read the thread.
The vids are showing differnt combofinishers and the timings yes. But in my opinion that’s a must have knowledge for every engi out there. Don’t you automaticly test this stuff by yourself if you have access to it? I’m not criticizing the vids, I just say that they are more like “basics”.
“First-come-first-served” may be correct but is rarely the case. It doesn’t matter wich combo field appeared first. It only matter what field something enters first.
For example image this situation: You, the player, are “P”. The enemy is “E”. Combo fields are (F) or (S). F = Fire, S = Smoke.
P (F)(S) E
If you now shoot with a projectile to the enemy, you will inflict burn, cuz the projectile entered the fire field first. Obviously.
If somone uses a smoke bomb FIRST, then a fire bomb right next to it, it looks like this:
P ((F)S))
If you now walk into both fields and use a finisher you get might from fire field, since you’ve entered it first, even if the smoke field was up earlier. A player or projectile gains a “is in a fire field” hidden tag I guess. So the first one triggers its effect.

(edited by Xyonon.3987)
Dont make it more complicated than it actually is. Just do the following things:
To buff him even more we could add random boons like protection, aegis, regeneration to retaliation but still let confusion stay as main stat.
The damage in PvE is actually GOOD as long as he hits 2 enemies. Swordman does crit for 6k when the mage does 2x 2k + confusion, wich may add another 200-300 x2. It’s not as good as the swordie, yes, but it’s not terrible, especially since it cleanes conditions when traited.
Shapeshifter … hmm … It would be nice if you switch place with your pet for a few seconds, this would be funny
Rangers do not own any magic powers. They are based on their strength, battle technique and knowledge about the nature. To manipulate the nature is the elementalists part. The only thing a ranger with a scepter and a focus would be able to do is to dance together with some grawls around a fire … :P
