  • Pulling mobs together so everyone can beat them up more efficient and tell me how much damage they deal, while I just smile back at them.
  • Interrupting key skills of enemies to disable them and nullify the threat they want to be.
  • Reflecting projectiles to protect my allies and throw back damage for ultra high crits.
  • Never dying thx to countless options to escape, block and protect.
  • Porting my whole party around to get things done faster.
  • And most important: Being constantly very stressed with swaping weapons and retraiting all the time.

A pain in the butt class to play, but I love it and it’s so much fun if you master it. But it requires some knowledge, skill and good reaction.

Thanks.

Do you use distortion for teammates too?
Where a guardian does block with aegis for teammates, what does a mesmer do in its place and when? Could you tell me that?

You’re really just going to have to wait and play it for yourself. The situational combos and play styles are endless.

And stop asking this on every profession forum. Go to the official wiki and use your own imagination.

It wasnt asked on every profession forum (due to having no interest in several professions). Its more effective to ask it on a few professions their forum (and split it up for each profession), instead of making one big post about a handfull of professions, because that post would become to long, due to several professions being included.

I had already researched wikis, metabattle, google, youtube etc. to see spells of professions.
However that is not the same as someone describing how their profession plays out in pve like dungeons and such.
Because that would help imagining/creating a picture how the profession plays out after reading a description on the forums about it.
Like what kind of stuff the profession encounters in pve and how to function in the group/solo with dps spells, support spells , control spells and such. When are x spells used in which kind of situation. That kind of stuff.

For example in guardian case, things like, blocking attacks for teammates with aegis when x pve mob/boss does y etc.

A description from someone who knows how the class plays out, will help me imagining how it will look in pve. I am not asking for someone to imagine for me.
I get the impression, by reading your post, that you misunderstood what I meant and wanted.

Engineer 2h mace

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Yashuoa.9527

Yashuoa.9527

In the HoT trailer, you see an engineer with a hammer, who does a smash with it.

I see the Engineer as a character who has ranged options in every build.
That is what I like about that profession.

A hammer however, sounds like melee.

It doesnt have to be. It could have ranged spells on that weapon. Some weapons on other classes, that you would see as more of a melee weapon, have ranged options too.
So what do you think. Will the Elite spec engineer with the hammer, have ranged spells on that weapon too?

Have they released any info, that would give a bit of a picture about what we can expect?

EDIT:
Changed the word 2h mace into hammer.

its people spreading missinformation each profession will only get 1 elite spec when hot launch and the next one for each profession can be a week after or 3 years noone knows.

So its not misinformation than?

One elite spec at HoT launch is correct
and more elite specs afterwards is correct too.

Its just that when the other additional elite specs get released is unknown.

Right?

I meant interesting as far as pve goes.

Know any pve group dungeon vids or can you give a description of how it goes in a group?

For pvp the profession choices arent that difficult, due to being insta lvl 80 in heart of the mist. So you can swap to something else quite easily if you dislike it but for pve you have to invest more time to lvl to 80, so therefore I restricted the question to pve.
Because my choice for that part I find more difficult.

I hope the 2h engineer weapon will still allow for builds that can fight at range.
Either due to some ranged attacks with that weapon, due to kit combinations or preferably both.

Shield of the avenger?

Yashuoa.9527

Yashuoa.9527, basically SoA should follow you while dome not being activated, but the skill as alot of problem, most time u need to be out of combat to get SoA repositioning at your position or save the command skill like Vizardlorde.8243 said, but even that can turn out to get borked.

Dont activate SoA to a AoE zone, will get insta killed, SoA runs out of combat to protec your team mate even if ge fighthing a melee target, and leave you uncovered while you are trying to figh a ranger or engie (nader).

SoA wil also run out of your position and get in melee range of your atacker, 2-3 AA and your utility is gone.

Also in the dome CD interval it is easy to target you and the SoA, even a ranger can disable SoA easilly after cast.

Also by the time SoA is being casted is eneught to get u down or put u on lot of stress while tryign to cast.

Thanks.
Okay so its basically a bad spell atm, which needs improvement?

Shield of the avenger?

in Guardian

Yashuoa.9527

(….)
What is the interval in which the shield procs?

After someone has taken dmg, it will start generating shields periodically?

Arround ~3 second dome with a ~1.5-2 second, interval while player taking damage.

And skill does not generate shields, SoA will get rooted and cast a dome, then enters in CD after some time, and will cast dome again if player gets hitted, while dome is casted it does not follow the Guardian, and if you are in another place being hitted the recast of the dome will not be near you but where dome was previously casted, you need to stop taking damage and thus avoid SoA to cast dome to follow you.

Also if ur on WvW, and i think is happend in spvp to, players at higher place atacking you, SoA will just be afk and not proc the dome.

Thanks.

Seems like a spell which could be nice, but looks to have a bit of clunky weaknesses.

You or someone needs to take dmg first for it to start a dome?
Or will it start a dome too, if you for example block a hit through some other spell?

Will it follow you if you take no dmg through evades for example, or you basically need to be out of combat for it to follow you to a new spot?

The shield follows behind the guardian and periodically generates a Shield of Absorption that absorbs projectiles.

What is the interval in which the shield procs?

The shield will not begin generating the shield until a nearby ally is struck.

After someone has taken dmg, it will start generating shields periodically?

Which skins are faction based from the personal story.
You already join this faction in the character creation choices?

The skins tied to the personal story are the one’s from joining the Vigil, the ones from joining the Order of Whispers, and from joining the Priory.

You don’t join the factions through the character creation screen, but rather by playing through the personal story. Eventually you will reach a point where you will have to join one of those three factions, and you will gain access to that faction’s armour and weapon vendors afterwards.

This won’t lock you out of acquiring the other two faction’s armour and weapons, but I think you would have to create a new character and get them through the personal story up to the point where they will also join a faction, and then put them into a different one.

Thanks good to know.

Opinion on tempest idea

in Elementalist

Posted by: Yashuoa.9527

Yashuoa.9527

Tempest is advertised by ANET as: “Effective close-range fighters who can support their allies on the front lines”.

The DD already does that right?

Would it be better if it was a medium/long range fighter, who can support allies (in a different way than staff eles)?

Medium range/long range is more fitting with the idea of an elemental wizard right?

So what if they changed Tempest into:

Rather than making your attunements increase in cooldown, you should get a decrease on them when you overload.
You already pay for the overload by having to be in an attunement longer than you normally would.
Why would it need an increased cooldown on top of it?

Any chance that Anet will go in this direction?

I am going Mesmer.

Please correct me if I say something that isnt true.

Here is my reasoning why Mesmer:

The last few days I have done alot of investigating in the game (google, youtube, advice/help from forums etc.) and at some point you just gotta say now I know enough, lets start and find what works for me by actually playing.

I read that Mesmer has to be more thoughtful about the encounters in pve than most other classes. Which is a + to me.

It is a unique style, not seen in other MMOs (this can be a + as well as a -, but so far I see it as a +). Original gameplay. Highskill strategic class I read, which is what I want.

I prefer the looks of light armor over heavy armoir and looks are important as well.
Light armor wizard + shield (Chronomancer) looks great.

Elementalist. No weaponswap=less build options?
I will be missing out on weapon swap by going ele and I think its cool for my first char to not miss out on that, seeing as this weapon swap feature isnt in other games that I know. Unsure what to think of tempest ele elite spec. It increases attunement cooldown when you overload and that doesnt seem like the right risk/reward to me.

I read that pve is staff ele and that doesnt seem much fun to me pve wise by looking at the spells combined with pve. http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Elementalist_-_Staff
Standing in a bit in the back, shooting some dmg, healing and fields out+ elementals and conjured weapons (my impression).
Ele pvp seems lot more fun, but I can make a lvl 2 ele and start right away in pvp anyway, so pvp, requires less of a need to be careful in my choice

I love what I read about Chronomancer so far, the Mesmer elite spec.
Looks like some sort of Time and Space Bending Ilussion Wizard.

Mesmer has good group utility too. I read both guardian and Mesmer can fill the pve group utility role in their own way. Mesmer is less pug friendly I heard in that regard, but I dont mind about that.

Guardian has low mobility. I like mobility and I think this will become a problem at some point. Not a problem for an alt, but it probably will be troublesome for me as a main.

Love portals for the group. Reflects (I love reflect and Mesmers have a good amount of them. Reflect is also useful in pve right?). Even distortion for teammates if you trait this. Good mobility. Mass condi/boon cleanse is cool too. Aesthetic pleasing looking spells.

Thanks for all the info and advice.
Gonna dive in the GW2 world as Mesmer. Looking forward to it. GW2 looks like a great game. If Mesmer wont work out for me than it isnt the end of the world. I can always swap to Elementalist for example if that turns out to be better for me.

You will always get gear of all three weights (heavy, medium, and light). You can choose to unlock the skin (either by salvaging or right-clicking to choose Unlock skin) or just sell the items, regardless of their weight. And there aren’t any “important” sets that drop; armor skins can be mixed, and there’s no bonus for having all of the same skin set.

So with a light armor class you can unlock all the armor skins in the game. Including medium and heavy?

Wardrobe questions

The wardrobe system.
After googling a few things arent clear to me yet.

Lets say I play an elementalist and lvl him to 80.
On my way to 80, I will find lightarmor gear and sets.
I understand that once a piece of gear is not part of the economy anymore, that it can become part of your wardrobe.

Will the gear I find, only be lightarmor gear, or will I find medium and heavy armor as well? Will that be high quality pieces like important sets?
If I can find medium and heavy armor too, can I unlock those for the wardrobe as well?

What are the ways to unlock it for your wardrobe?
I read about the unlock skin ability? You can do this on all gear pieces? Even if it is a armor type that you cant wear with your profession?

Yashuoa.9527

What might be better is, if you’ve played other mmos, what classes did you find most satisfying in those other games?

To answer your question.
I havent played much MMOs.

One that people probably know is World of Warcraft (WoW). I did play that for a while.

In that game I started as a mage and I liked destructionwarlock too (and a bit affliction). Did a little bit of hunter as well.
I took a break from that game and when I came back I moved to shaman and druid (mostly their heal and caster specs),
because of wanting to play more supportive roles (never tryed feral).
I did mostly pvp in that game.

From my diving into GW2 so far this game seems more fitting for me than WoW (both pvp and pve). Love the dodge mechanic.

I can see myself liking ele, engi, guardian, mesmer and thief.
Maybe more later on, but so far (from testing in heart of the mist), these seem to have my main starting interest.

However I need to reduce those 5 to 1 for now
and HEART of THORNS giving new spells (spells that I dont know exactly yet and which are not finished yet), makes the choice harder.

I am the strategic careful profession type. I often play something that doesnt have good passive defences (squishy passively), but that can survive well through positioning, timing your abilities well, mobility, cc, utility and such.
I like to have some team support as well and I like spells that require good timing (skillful).

I loved stuff like grounding totem (absorb/reflect with glyph) and windshear (interrupt) for example from the shaman.
Iceblocking a deathcoil as mage. Deathcoiling a deathcoil as lock. Shadowword deathing a sheep or blind as priest. This required good timing. Some more than others.
Cleansing dangerous stuff from teammates (freedom effects, dispel and such) and removing important stuff from enemies (purge/dispel) was fun too.

It was about gear.

That if you unlock a certain set on lets say character A, that you will have access to that set with character B as well.
Which would reduce the need of having to refarm on new characters.

Does this make sense to anyone?
Does someone know what I am talking about?

I am still diving into the game to get to know how stuff works and it might be something that I have dreamed though, I dunno :P.

First, decide through a process of elimination, in other words decide which profession you DON’T WANT first.

This will make it easier deciding.

Everything you described is basically either Elementalist or Guardian.

“I like a class that is skillbased. As in, being difficult but rewarding and stuff like having to time your abilities well. I like stuff like reflects, knockbacks, pulls, stun/daze and such.
Having stuff that is useful to my team is a big +. Like cleasing dangerous stuff from my teammates, having heals for them and protection spells.”

Elementalist seems to have more of what you are describing, Guardians have more protection spells, and many useful buffs for allies but less knockbacks, stuns, and pulls.

I suggest try both and out of the two decide what you like.

Yeah the past few days I have been doing the eliminating part and I have both professions in Heart of the Mist to try out.

Its probably gonna be a toss up between elementalist and guardian as my first character. Where I lean a bit more towards elementalist atm (also because I like their gear looks more).

May I ask you why you didnt mention Engineer?
Isnt that profession similar to Elementalist?

Pve picture

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Yashuoa.9527

Yashuoa.9527

First of all, imo, the first class you level to 80 should be your favorite, regardless of its usefulness. After the first one, it’s pretty easy to level others too.

In dungeons, the top 4 classes are Ele, Thief, Guardian and Warrior. If you play any of those and use a meta build, you pretty much guarantee yourself a place in the PvE scene.
As for others, you can find groups, but the players looking for really efficient clearing probably won’t accept you.

You should know, however, that dungeons and low level fractals are quite easy and you can find casual groups no matter what class and build you’re using. If you’re interested in more “serious” dungeon running, however, stick to the meta.

EDIT: A few more details.
Basically, the general strategy in dungeons is do as much DPS as possible while mitigating as much damage as possible. For that purpose, blinds/reflects/blocks/etc are valuable. Depending on which role you play, you’ll be mainly focusing in either personal DPS or party support (but generally do both).
CC is a bit more situational, since it usually requires coordination. We mainly use Elementalist’s Ice bow #5 to CC a boss and DPS it down quickly. Other than that, you usually don’t need to hard-CC mobs because you LoS them and AoE them down either way. Blinds like Elementalist’s Glyph of Storms(earth) are very useful, though.

This is what each meta profession mainly offers:
Elementalist – DPS, Ice bow and party buffing
Thief – DPS and stealth
Guardian – Damage mitigation through reflects/blinds
Warrior – DPS and Party buffing

Thanks.

Yeah a class being most to my liking is indeed more decisive in my choice, than how wanted it is.

Stuff like:
Is stuff like these elementalist spells useful?
Magnetic wave (reflects projectiles).
Swirling winds (destroys projectiles).
Ring of earth (blocks missles). Are projectiles and missles the same?

Engineer spells like Magnetic shield (reflects projectiles and pushes back foes on release). Pull spells like engineer Magnet.

The above elementalist spells are often used in pve too? The reflecting and blocking?
I saw you didnt mention stuff like block/reflect in the elementalist list.

Are those engineer spells often used?

Do you do meatshielding in pve?

I hope this is the right section. This is the pve section right?

From what I understand is that you can kinda start right away for pvp (instant 80), but for pve you need to lvl, which can take roughly 50 hours for a new player.

So choosing a profession in pve has to be done with more consideration, because of investing time in the lvling process.

I want to choose a profession to lvl to 80 and I am not sure which one yet.
Hopefully you experienced players can help out a bit.

I lack a picture of what I should imagine from pve instances like dungeons and such.
Can you reflect bosses and high lvl mobs their projectiles with reflect spells?
Do you need to interrupt them?
Can you hide behind a player who takes hits (with block for example) and that teammates hide behind the teammate who uses block, avoiding an attack too?

Is stuff like these elementalist spells useful?
Magnetic wave (reflects projectiles).
Swirling winds (destroys projectiles).
Ring of earth (blocks missles). Are projectiles and missles the same?
Engineer spells like Magnetic shield (reflects projectiles and pushes back foes on release).
Pull spells like engineer Magnet.

I want a bit of an idea of what to picture from pve.
Can you shed a bit how pve plays out?
What is wanted from the different members in a team.

That will help me choosing my profession.

Where is the gear?

While in Heart of the Mists, there should be two little icons in the top center of your screen. One that looks like the PvP icon(crossed swords) and another that looks like a helmet. Click the helmet and it should take you to your PvP build tab where you can change traits, amulets, runes and sigils.

The helmet is on the left side of the double crossed swords?
It says it will be unlocked at lvl 31.
Is that the one?

Or do you mean a helmet on the map?

The helmet is located at the top centre of the screen.
Refer the screenshot I attached.

Yeah I just found out.

Its in the center.

It shows amulets, sigils etc. but no gear like hatpiece, shoulders etc.
Where to obtain the gear?

Whilst in the Heart of the Mist (HotM), you don’t need any specific gears equipped for stats, they are obtained from amulets/runes/sigils. However you do need a chest, pants and boots piece equipped to get the armour values. Those specific pieces can be any level or grade, therefore even the starter gear would work.

Similarly for weapons, it can be any grade/level and should give the full attack values. You can purchase the NPC ones if you choose to use other weapon sets.

Okay so you gain different gear looks from doing pve dungeons and such and from unlocking stuff in pvp?

Meaning if you enter HotM as a new player at lvl 3, than you will be equal gearwise to everyone else, but your looks will just be starter gear look for a while, until you get different gear.

Yes. Armor does not help against conditions.
But: Conditions can be countered by builds easier. So if the oponent is set up against it, you get a hard time, if not you often melt them.

What do you mean with this last line?

You mean if you do not have a build to fight conditions, well, than you get melted by one that uses them?

However there are probably builds who are good against condition builds, making it difficult for the condition build right?

Cleansing flame

Okay so it at least cleanses 9x if used on 1 person?

So whats left is that it either cleanses 9x on everyone in the flames,
or that it cleanses 9 times total, devided by the amount of people having uptime in the flames?

Correct?

Retaliation and block

Okay so if block and retaliation are both up, than you will block the first attack and retaliation will happen on the second attack?

No.
If both are up, you’ll block AND retaliate the 1st attack and keep retaliating the rest of the attacks while retaliation is up.
As I said, both are separated things that have nothing to do with each other, if you have retaliation then no matter what is happening with you, every attack that land on you will be retaliated (not reflected) even if the attack is blocked or cause 0 damage, only if you evade the attack it won’t proc the retaliation.

Thanks.
I understand now that block and retaliate, can happen at the same time.

I got a bit confused because there are 2 effects, which sound similar.
They both talk about the word reflect, which got me confused (I saw retaliation and reflect as the same thing, but they are different).

Retaliation, which talks about reflecting incoming dmg back to its source (x amount of dmg goes back to the attacker, but you still get hit by the ability that you retaliated)
and the effect Reflect, which reflects the actual projectile back to its source, without you getting hit by it.

Correct?
