Hit quote instead of edit OP edited as per Mc Payne’s request
Thanks Mc Payne! The carnival part originally was a jig, until I discovered the Prophecies theme in 3 fit over top of it. The time of the Prophecies theme in 3 totally nullified the jig in 2 :P
Also, the carnival theme I think you’re referring to is actually pretty much identical to the middle, happier theme :o Surprised? Listen for a simplified oboe line underneath the regular, fast melody at the end section (it’s pretty faint, though not hard to pick out once your ear grips it). It’s just in a minor key this time!

Just something I created a while ago for my guild for Halloween
Hope you enjoy crazy.

You honestly don’t need to dodge roll that often with the sword. Especially in combination with a dagger. There are so many build in evades with the weapon skills that dodge rolling becomes secondary.
That being said, they could easily fix the sword auto attack chain by making dodge supersede the chain.
I agree almost with everything. I use sword and dagger and their evades are excellent. However what do you do on cooldown? Dodge is a necessary mechanic because of a few mechanics – aoe attacks mostly in my experience. I can time skills 2-4 to dodge devastating attacks from the foe I’m fighting and the foes nearby, but that’s not enough in many cases.
The second part I couldn’t agree with more. What’s so hard about making dodge override the chain? Can anyone think of another auto-attack chain that renders dodge unresponsive? If my ranger can’t voluntarily stop himself, he shouldn’t be able to be interrupted either. Rename the sword skill “rage” and make it grant stability.
Holy cow! I’m so glad I found this. Yes please!
I’m not colour blind. However, (and this might be weird) I find it difficult and painful to play – occasionally just in general, and usually with elementalists and guardians due to their flashy skills. I get powerful headaches. On my desktop, my video card has the option to desaturate my entire computer. I can play with reduced colour, or no colour at all.
A thought for the OP and anyone else having problems with red circles: I have a hard time imagining how you would do this, but try to check if your video card driver/software supports modifying specific channels. I’m sure I saw in mine an option to lighten/darken reds, blues, and greens, or even simply rebalance them. This might help make red circles more visible.
To ANet: Only certain brands and models of video card support these options. It would really helpful for players at a visual disadvantage for you to experiment with and implement options to adjust colour balance in the actual client. It gives ALL players more options, AND you wouldn’t have to change the red circles for everyone.
Could this work, lairds and ladies?
I’d go for a whole line of plush toys. And purchase of the retail plush toy gives you a serial to redeem for the mini pet in-game
Too many unique serial codes methinks, however…. would have been nice :’(
Event mail (with the green star, for example from Lost Shores or Halloween) counts toward your limit invisibly.
Example:
It shows 6/10 in your inbox, but you have 4 starred messages = full inbox
Also: Occasionally this happens for me with no event mail. I’ll delete one of my 6 (for example) messages, and receive one more. This has always corrected itself on a relog.
Best Buy in Canada has options to check availability online for a local store. They even offer online reservations. I reserved mine online, waited for email confirmation saying it was ready, and picked it up in-store the next day <3
This sounds sorta similar to my case back in October.
I used my debit VISA to purchase gems before. That was until a phone call with VISA after something fishy showed up on my bank statement. VISA directed me to their own risk management department, they contacted NCSoft’s fraud department and convinced me to cancel my debit VISA the same day :/
It worked out well for me but:
1. Contact the number on the back of your card and let them know what’s up
2. Scan your computer for viruses (my issuer said it could’ve been a virus that collected my card info in the game client).
3. Do not visit sites that sell gold – they are nesting grounds for malware which can track keystrokes in the game client. ANet used to advertise this a lot with GW1… but that game didn’t have a gem store… :/
Disclaimer: Point #3 is just a warning – I never looked at gold-selling sites in my case lol.
If they have gem cards in store where you live, Kromica, I’d highly suggest using them. Credit Card companies are very clear on their position on entering card information in executables.
/me whispers “It’s NOT smart”
This post is almost a favor to NCSoft if gem cards are indeed available where you are Kromica. Hey, and at $24.99 for 2000 gems, you save a whole dollar every 200,000 gems!
Ohoni nailed it. Another stickler is the fact that the price of 25 keys last weekend was hiked 40% (based on the price of 25 keys prior to the weekend) before the 50% discount.
The word you’re looking for, Nicole is “promote”. You don’t actively promote overspending, but you most definitely encourage it.
It could be my luck, but this is some of my own “encouragement” to people to be patient. I’ve completed 4 or 5 explorable zones (non-towns) in the past 2 weeks, receiving 1 BL key for 2 of those completions. If you wanna try your luck, get together with some friends and whip those WPs, POIs, and vistas.
Disclaimer: My guildmates have had worse afaik finding keys for completion, but the chance is there
“My pet needs help!” (HM)
I find it ironic this plays when your pet dies.
Also, there was a hilarious conversation in DR where two male NPCs kitten about their wives and then start talking about how attractive Logan Thackery is. I haven’t come across it in a while
I recently transmuted my exotic coat to the cultural human tier 1 Scout’s Coat (NO TAILS!) – one of very few (2 afaik, perhaps 3) without tails/trenchcoat. I have already gotten 2 random comments on my male ranger’s hind quarters
<3
It’s a shame. It’s been there the whole time and you’d never know it.
If it isn’t a bug, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t need fixing, which is something that people should understand. Just because something is working as intended doesn’t immediately make it the best thing in the world that can’t ever fail.
Having to make special allowances to use the basic attack on a weapon that adds a high difficulty level to a weapon without tangible and significant benefits is, at a base level, simply bad balance. If using the weapon was extremely difficult, but it also had a large amount of potential damage/arbitrary bonus then it would be balanced. As it stands, though I find using the sword to be extremely fun, I also can’t justify using it when there are better options for damage with much less required on my part to actually get the damage.
This deserves a yay!
When a feature (ie “auto attack”) becomes a liability, it’s not enough to say “learn how to use it”. It’s like cutting off the sleeves of your parka when it tears. Get it fixed, or yes, use something else. If skills 2 and 3 can break the chain, let dodge break it. And for puppy sakes, what do you do when 2 and 3 are recharging? You can spam your dodge hotkey for 5+seconds before you actually move. Liability.
And btw, devs don’t play rangers, so their “stance” (punny) on whether sword 1 is bugged or not is moot. If you disagree, cycle back to the Iggy’s quote. Repeat.
My favourite sword skin was 5 gold. It also shares a skin with a precursor. Legendary weapons are for only a few kinds of people IMO: the people who love the skin, the people who find excitement in hard work and games of chance, and attention kittens. I will never go for a legendary unless the chance for The Dreamer falls into my lap, simply because I find it hilarious. I dislike every other legendary skin.
I got a skin I like better for much much less, and I get equal recognition (ever since I bought my 16 copper torch skin, I’ve gotten comments every day that I’ve used it) from guildmates and strangers. There’s me on why this argument is silly. If you like the item, the best of luck to you. But if you don’t wanna bother working for something you like better and then complain… well… I wouldn’t want to Xmas shop for you.
However, I also sympathize for those who feel pressure to grind for better stats. I have no idea what Anet was thinking going back on their own tier system, however if I don’t find grinding for slightly better gear fun, I’m not going to grind. Maybe I’m being a bit apathetic, but I’ll play and grind for my own enjoyment rather than anyone else’s (even if I’m not invited to as many parties).
I’m going to RP with my hard-earned exotics now. Tips transmuted tier 3 crafted hat
Heck, I used to play a game where they routinely did this with every single item, every single sale.
If GW2 begins to do this more often, I’ll have “used to have played” one too
GW2 has been goodish so far in consistency in their gem store pricing. The only reason people are complaining is because the team hasn’t done this (afaik) before. It’s purely deceptive. And the only real way to help the less informed is to call them out on it.
Don’t attempt to deceive us with the Gem Store. It’s insulting and not up to par with your reputation. I still have faith in NCSoft…
I doubt any time soon. In the future, once the the game has matured a bit more and all the important stuff is dealt with. If this comes out before the important stuff, there would be resentment by some because this is a luxury feature.
I think they would do it at 800 gems based on what they did for GW1, but who knows.
My thoughts exactly … First try to make the game more balanced and well versed, building a solid foundation and fixing bugs, then proceed to changes in that direction imo.
Not that that has been the motto of GW2 so far. However (and I don’t know the trouble name changes cause on servers and other game mechanics) there are good personal reasons (including roleplaying reasons) I think Anet should take into account. Anet’s introduced races which don’t follow real life tradition when it comes to names.
Among many things, Charr often pick their own names, Asura and Norn are given titles in their name, and humans sometimes legally change their name. Obviously when I see names like Vlad the Inhaler (I made that up, though I’d be very surprised if it didn’t exist), I laugh, and I let people enjoy being a bit silly. But on my server and my guild especially, names have a very special significance. Perhaps a name change shouldn’t be $10 worth of gems… Don’t make them free, but maybe it should have an in-game anchor like the makeover guy in Temple of Balthazar in GW1.
Of course now that I’ve given my heart to this issue, a name change will go for 1600 gems -.-
EDIT: OOH! Idea. New endgame material. Hear me out. Add a small quest at the end of the PS to change your name. Could be a one time thing (obvs make it available to character’s who’ve completed it at this point). Keeps in line with the focus on rewarding characters aesthetically, as originally promised in GW2, and implemented with most things in GW1. AFTER this, make changes purchase-only for that character. One free name change per character? Sounds fair. Of course I wouldn’t want player considerations to get in the way of making money… lol.
HTech, the problem most people have isn’t that the sword doesn’t deal damage or that it plays slightly differently – that’s part of the reason why it’s one of if not the best weapon rangers have. It’s that the rooting prevents you from dodging. If you go in with a sword and you get red circled… or for some strange reason the ranger’s victim tries to fight back, you’re stuck and you die.
All they have to do is let dodge break the animation. Rangers aren’t asking for a buff, they’re asking for for their favourite toy back. (I wonder if the rooting has always been in place or if it was added the same time they changed the path of Serpent’s Strike).
I agree. More variety would be nice. Specifically some coats without tails, maybe a few a bit tighter, more options showing skin, and perhaps some vest-type thingies? My human ranger would like that. He’s a bit of a tease
They will delete this great posting… Sad.
I can see it now: “This thread is closed because my cousin’s fish died.”
Else it will be merged into the Nov. 15 patch feedback thread… does that thread still exist?
For the sake of something constructive: I’m not really sure what I think about my ranger (possibly because I fell down the stairs and got hit by a car in the last 24 so I’m a bit loopy from painkillers). I recently RP’d him into a coma but I love him so much I’ll be reviving him.
If I plan to use him for gameplay and not strictly RP, I will combine the two and claim his poor performance is the result of a disability brought on by medical malpractice. He is a complete reflection of my real life anyway – apart from his obsession with footwear… I play some stuff up.
^ just some ideas on how one can continue to enjoy your ranger after the November 15th kittenslap
The hidden 10% tax (on top of the 5% listing fee) sellers pay when they list an item to sell… can some explain to me or link me to where is is protecting the market? I assume there is a reason.
I’m thinking I got lucky – I made about 6 gold from my two named boot drops. Considering this was a one-time event… I would much rather have had Anet spend the time on fixing broken content than introducing limited-time only content that a decent portion of the player base could not attend anyway.
It DOES work on defeated players. It just doesn’t work period part of the time lol.
When I read the title of this thread, I thought it was referring to Anet’s customer service lol. Indeed, I confirm the trait is not working as stated with your example.
Brilliant. Brilliant. Marry me?
I am saddened that the many broken elements of the game were put off for this. We had Halloween little over two weeks ago. There is word you’ve already started on Wintersday. Why is piling on new content more important than fixing what isn’t working?
“My car won’t start.”
“Not to worry! We’re installing a blu-ray player!”
The ranger skill Search and Rescue by another player will revive you and the pet will not die! (At least my white raven did not). I’m confused if the event is repeating, but if you see this happen, ask in /say for a ranger to help! We’re not useless after all!
LMAO I never thought of this
But to clarify, these items are not exclusive to the Lost Shore event. They are “named armour sets” which existed before but were prior to the event very rare and valuable (my named boots I got this evening were worth over 3g on TP when I got them, and were about 1g an hour later).
Every named piece of armour has the same skin within the weight of the armour. Norgu’s boots and Zhed’s boots, both light armour, share the same skin. Skins for named armour are not shared by any other item.
XD
There is typo in the description, and a bug with the skill. The spirit itself says it revives allies, but the trigger skill (or whatever the term is – the description of the effect when you activate it) specifies “downed allies”. I was disappointed after I bought it. The skill itself is unreliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t and we don’t know why yet. I know this isn’t helpful, but it’s just another defective skill Anet has yet to acknowledge of address.
Search and Rescue can be very useful when the game bugs. Today, in the big Lost Shores DE finale, a player bugged out during the cinematic and fell into the lava which appeared when the floor beneath the Ancient karka collapsed. They could not be rezzed, as multiple players tried to enter the lava to revive him, dying in the process themselves. I switched out a spirit (yes, I’m an idiot, I still use spirits) for SaR, and my raven was able to revive him without taking damage from the lava! Once revived, he caught on fire and started taking massive damage, but got out of the pit. NOT useless…. though not fully functional lol.
There currently appears to be a 10 internal countdown: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/The-real-mechanics-of-the-ranger-changes/first#post773029
This has and is being tested by players.
Be thankful the player base is more considerate than Anet, and find another group. Plus this happens with every class. Rangers aren’t a damage dealer, plain and simple. The fact that rangers bring no focused role to the party is not relevant.
Similar example from GW1: Ritualist healers. In many cases, just as effective as a monk, but sometimes not…. I’m bored with this, I hope I helped
CENSOR, I don’t see the point you’re trying to make. Anet has yet to show they read our concerns, so the idea that this thread will get rangers a fix is moot. Players know they don’t get any leverage coming here – what do you think they’re trying to accomplish? Because in my experience, venting DOES work. It makes the venter feel better. That’s all that is happening here :/ Thanks for the sarcasm, chap
I love my ranger most of all. But I will retire him into RP-only once he wakes up from his coma. Why? It’s not that he’s not balanced. I can still have tons of fun in PvE (minus dungeons, but I’m not a huge fan of dungeons anyway). No, the reason is that Anet has lied, disappeared, insulted and bullkittened us with no promise to care in the future that we can hold them too. It’s RP for my ranger. Oh yah. My ranger’s the only character I really use. This should free up some time outside the game And before you respond, I honestly have more fun roleplaying and immersing with my guildmates than combat, so at least I’m happy with my decision. In-game I’m resigned, but on these forums I’ll continue to fight for others who paid to slay <3
I’ve suggested before to allow rangers to use their pets as crafting ingredients. Failing that, “what Substace E” said.
I don’t understand why a ranger and rifle don’t match up… but a warrior in full-plate and guantlets does. Fine, but how about we keep everything as is but force warriors to remove their glove armour to equip firearms?
It’s funny, sad and true Zox, but can we try to keep this thread on topic? Just trying to explain the real mechanics of these updates. Why some bullets are a joke, and how to use the few that are slightly useful to our best advantage. This is a service to rangers inspired by the negligence of the development team. Let’s support each other while Anet is boycotting the profession.
Myrdreth, it might be bothersome, but I’ve been told by a manager at VISA’s risk department after their investigation with NCSoft’s fraud department: It’s never a good idea to save financial account information in an executable. My VISA’s information was breached after I used it in-client. I called VISA after a mysterious charge for the amount of 800 gems appeared on my statement. VISA immediately closed the card for me, and thankfully I got my money back a couple of weeks later.
Even though it’s Paypal, I suspect the risk is no less. I was told it could be as outlandish as an unrelated stowaway on my computer that tracked my keystrokes in the client, acquired by visiting a benign website which mentions GW2. The client you may consider “safe” but a whole computer is much less so – it is your weakest link.
Sorry, Tibbel, I thought you were on the other side of the claims
For others: I did mean cumulative as Tibbel guessed – progressive is suggestive of tests done in sequence, where not all tests here are. What we’re seeing is many tests independent of each other which consistently point to the minimum chance of a trigger.
It’s simpler to look at it this way: If there was no cool down, there would still be a considerably greater chance (a 10-15% chance) that the effect of a spirit will trigger twice in a row. However that is not what is being reported. It’s true that it takes 10 attacks to reasonably expect you get at least one trigger. But considering we have weapons that attack faster than once/second and we consistently can’t get more than one trigger every ten seconds… you can’t do anything with percentages without interpretation.
Thanks for provoking this much needed clarification. I’ll update the language of the OP
EDIT: By “other side of the claims” I don’t mean that the claims some players aren’t experiencing the cooldown, as has been suggested, are illegitimate. Back to the lab! lol
(edited by Zaith.9132)
This post has been made 100x already in many different forms (including by myself). Nobody is focusing on the balance of the class anymore as ArenaNet has already identified this as something that needs fixing – the issue remains the misleading information and the lack of actual response/change.
Thank you docMed <3 Anet has admitted rangers are the “most broken class”. Even though no one believes them they say they’re working on it. Next time though, we’ll try to …. under-exaggerate :/
Even my human character knows something’s wrong. I quote: “My pet needs help!”
I love you forgotten blade! ROFL. I will definitely take this stance in game now, so I’m glad you posted it here for me to see. However, I will remain a man of business here on the forums. We can be spirited and savvy at the same time.
Well I dunno about that, but it’s an indication that the game is fixed. Rather than quitting, I’d recommend moving to another table. But that’s not what’s happening in GW2, thankfully.
Tibbel, you’re talking progressively and theoretically. If I roll a 100 sided die 10 times, approximately 1/3 will end up 35 or lower. Every time it did, that effect would trigger. Your math is correct, but your logic is not. One is not promised a trigger if you roll a million times, granted.
(edited by Zaith.9132)
Maybe you can share your secret to using passive effects, Durzlla.
EDIT: This was the point of this thread. I didn’t comment on the items I didn’t try to understand. I asked questions of those who did understand to help fill out the “real mechanics”. And I already made an edit for the greatsword regarding my misunderstanding. This is a constructive thread. Another thread has already mentioned your surprising lack of a presence by name, Durzlla.
(edited by Zaith.9132)
Yeah the thing is, it doesn’t matter whether you believe me or not, because whether you think i’m right, doesn’t matter because i know my spirits proc more then 10 seconds without a sliver of a doubt in my mind, you’d be the one kittening yourself not using the spirits because there’s some fictional internal CD.
I’m a very poor player: I ONLY use spirits as my utilities. Partly because the only way I can feel useful to my party is to have a pod of glowing rainbow dolphins to show off. It makes me feel pretty fabulous.
My point: I’m not saying I believe you or that I don’t believe you. All I can say is that I envy you if it’s true. I count you as blessed to have somehow avoided this phenomenon.
This is a constructive thread to help rangers understand how each of the recent changes to the class affects play. It was a horrible patch for rangers, that’s a sure thing. But let’s be intelligent about what it means.
Let’s explore why each of the 14/16 bullet points are “quality of life” improvements.
- Improved the effect chance on ranger spirits to 35% base and 50% when traited.
The spirits have an internal cooldown of ten seconds. This buff is much much less powerful than first glance would tell when more than a few attacks are made within the cooldown period.More here.
- Beastmastery minor traits now use the correct icon.
Cosmetic
- Splinter Shot: This skill’s damage is increased by 150%, and its bleeding duration is increased from 3 seconds to 4 seconds.
Someone wanna calculate the difference in damage maxed out?
- Counterattack: The blocking portion of this skill can now be used while moving. Ranged attacks will not trigger the second half of the skill.
Because moving out of the way is essential to triggering the counterattack
EDIT: I over looked, rather clumsily the benefit of being able to block ranged attacks. However, it’s no less sad that this seems to be, so far, the most powerful improvement for rangers in this patch. More here.
- Protecting Screech: This skill now states the correct duration of 4 seconds.
Cosmetic
- Call of the Wild: The Wilderness Survival trait Off-Hand Training now applies to this skill.
I can’t advocate for this one
- Throw Torch: The speed of the projectile has been increased.
I can’t advocate for this one
- Maul: This skill’s damage has been increased by 40%.
Can someone calculate the difference maxed out?
- Sun Spirit: The tooltip for this skill now displays the proper burning time of 3 seconds.
Cosmetic
- Whirling Defense: This skill was updated so that it interacts better with combo fields.
Can I give them this one, guys and gals?
- Splinter Shot: This skill is now a small projectile combo finisher.
Coral Shot: This skill is now a projectile combo finisher.
Feeding Frenzy: This skill is now a projectile combo finisher.
Mercy Shot: This skill is now a projectile combo finisher.
I guess this might be nice when all of Tyria goes Orr on us. I didn’t even know after playing a ranger since launch that combos were possible underwater.
EDIT: There are (albeit ONLY) about half a dozen underwater fields, At least one is not controllable.
(edited by Zaith.9132)
Actually Casey, if you read JP’s original post, they already made most of the ranger changes weeks ago but they were too much of a “risk factor” (Most took this to mean “game-breaking”, but I conclude they were talking about the kittentorm they’d cause – for laughs I have to assume). So really, they’d already “fixed” the ranger before JP updated us. They never implied they were actually looking for suggestions from the player base. Which became obvious hours ago.
Who the kitten is merging these thread? Speculation on when the recent patch was to come out, class fixes, and questions about the new dungeon? Maybe the moderators actually did read the ranger subforum and got wasted.
At least you didn’t get nerfed, and they even said they plan to buff you more.
That’s extremely debatable if you’ve followed this subforum’s concerns.
