An End to the Queensdale Train

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

If a player heads out to a champion by himself with the knowledge that a ‘zerg train’ is a few minutes away, is it wrong for him to kill it? He could farm materials and other mobs in the vicinity while waiting for the 20+ people to arrive so that could acquire credit as well. They certainly didn’t truck all the way down to farm mats.

It would be NICE for the player to wait, but I certainly wouldn’t fault him/her for starting the Champ early. Maybe they’re on a tight time schedule. Maybe they’re afraid that if the train shows up they won’t be able to do enough damage to get credit (a very legitimate concern, especially if they’re a low level character). The train can always move on to the next Champ, but the lone player may only be fighting this one Champion during their play session.

I will agree that people who deliberately set out to derail trains is also not very nice behaviour and I would not do it repeatedly to multiple Champs just to aggravate the people on the train. But if a player comes across a Champion and wants to test their skills against it solo, I can’t fault them for doing so. I certainly like seeing if I can kill Champs in the open world myself.

Eh, I don’t care. I love my Necro too and I won’t stop using her in Fractals and dungeons. I start dungeons too so PUGs can go ahead and kick me if they want. :P I’ve never been kicked before though; advertising for “friendly run. Can teach if necessary” gets some newbies, sure, but I also get a surprising number of experienced players. I guess sometimes people just like to hop into a dungeon where anything goes as long as the atmosphere is light-hearted and we finish in a reasonable amount of time.

You’re talking about Budger Blackpowder, right? It might well have been a family secret, although the first time we ran into black powder kegs was back in Prophecies, way before we ran into Blackpowder, and it seemed that those kegs were plentiful. (Even the Stone Summit had access to them, as I recall.) Maybe the Blackpowder family had exclusive rights to making it, or maybe not since they seemed to be in a fair number of Shiverpeaks missions in Prophecies. I don’t know either way.

Iron Marches - Devouring the Brand

This meta-event seems to be frequently bugged at one of two steps:

  • Sentinel Whiptail is searching for a powerful ally in Lamprey Grottoes.*

Unfortunately Sentinel Whiptail is standing still at his start point near Brandwatch Encampment Waypoint, and will not move or react when talked to, making it impossible to progress the meta-event. I have not managed to ascertain personally what causes the event to fail like this, but I suspect it may be similar to the one below.

  • Defend the siege devourer while it assists the troops.*

If the event bugs out here, the Siege Devourer is usually standing atop the cliffs to the west of Lake Desolann, but Sentinel Whiptail is once again back at the starting point at Brandwatch Encampment. I have a better idea of how this one fails; it seems that if Sentinel Whiptail is killed while this event is active, he auto-respawns back at Brandwatch Encampment, leaving the Devourer behind (which won’t move without Whiptail being present).

The sister event “Escort Centurion Bloodfist to Day’s Labor” can be completed separately as the Branded Juggernaut can be (sloooowly) killed without help from the Siege Devourer, but upon reaching Day’s Labor, the meta-event is stuck as both events must be complete for the meta-event to proceed.

I hope this bug is fixed as a matter of some urgency as this means that players are unable to unlock one of their traits without being forced to spend money on it.

As someone said earlier, it’s all down to the Commander. Some of them will avoid all fights and only go for undefended structures. Some (usually in Frostreach) will hunker down in Blue and build up crazy defenses and repel all attackers, occasionally venturing out to cap stuff when Red/Green give up and go elsewhere. Some (my favourites) alternate between the two; they go out and karma train, but on reports from scouts or just spotting orange swords on the map, will change directions and fall on the unexpecting enemy zerg like a thunderbolt. One time we sandwiched an Overgrowth zerg on the bridge between Stonegaze and the reactor and slowly, inexorably crushed them all. They had nowhere to run and eventually their zerg members started jumping off the bridge rather than face death at our hands.

Another time Badlands was capping our Statuary and our Commander saw it and cut across the central area. We rampaged down the central bridge and right into the BL zerg who were all too busy focusing on the Grawl champ to notice us coming. (I decided to help out the poor Champ by using Tornado and running into the middle of the players all stacked around the Champ. Knocked a bunch of them out into the Grawl’s quicksand skill, which basically trapped them all in constant stunlock and sitting ducks for the rest of the zerg that came in behind me.)

Ah, I see. Well, in that case I don’t see how it would have really made a difference to the cause of the Ebon Vanguard and Ebonhawke.

Most Dwarven buildings and cities were in the Shiverpeaks (or under it), too geographically distant to be of any use to the Ascalonians.

Dwarven weapons and equipment are reputed to be of high quality (especially given the Ascended tier status of Deldrimor Steel in GW2), but there’s nothing to say that the armor and weapons used by the Ebon Vanguard was any worse than what the Deldrimor dwarves were using.

Unique Dwarven magic appears to have been specifically tailored for Dwarves (the prime example being the Ritual of the Great Dwarf), so it wouldn’t have helped the humans in the slightest.

The only unique thing Dwarves had that could have helped the Ascalonians is their blasting powder, and obviously the Charr beat the humans to it in developing technology to utilise it. Why? Who can really say, since none of us were there? My guess is that either Gwen and Keiran didn’t have the manpower to spare in developing R&D to use black powder (by all accounts, they were pressed pretty hard in Ebonhawke and probably needed every available body to man the walls), or perhaps Gwen (not so much Keiran, since he seems more far-sighted) felt that humans had no need to resort to any non-human technology to win. This was a human war, and they’d win it with human magic and human resilience. (Failure to do so might have counted as failure in Gwen’s eyes; it would have been proof that humans could not stand on their own, and therefore something she would not accept.)

Yeah, we’ve mentioned this bug before. Just have to hope that ANet will fix it soon. It’s making a mockery of the Activities.

On the bright side, this also makes it a lot easier to work on your Crab Toss wins achievement. If you get the bug where the game thinks you’re carrying the crab when you’re not (seems to happen if you’re killed while carrying the crab), the game will put you onto the same team as the crab carrier. As long as the player with the winning score is on “your team” when the match ends, you’ll get the rewards and credit towards the achievement as if you’d won, even if your score is, like, 3 while the winning player is on 300.

All content I stated guarantees a precursor. That is immutable fact. What it does not guarantee, is whether or not you will actually be able to get that precursor before you stop playing GW2 or give up on a precursor/legendary. The fact you can get a precursor and the (false) fact that you will get a precursor are two obviously, and painfully so, distinctly different things. Players would do well to realize that without it needing to be repeated like they’re petulant children.

Ehh, I have to disagree with that. That’s like claiming in real life “Everybody will be rich if they work long enough and save properly.” Yes, if people were immortal, that statement would be undeniable fact. But the reality is that poor circumstances (bad luck in-game) and death (new games come out, ANet shuts down GW2) will prevent the vast majority of these people from ever achieving that goal.

To the people on the other side of the fence: If you play GW2 a lot (and I’m talking like 2000+ hours sunk into the game), odds are good you WILL either get a Precursor, or have the funds to purchase one. But people just need to be aware that the road to getting a Legendary is a lot longer and harder than they might think. (Alternatively, if you want to skip past it altogether, there’s always the gems → gold + purchase it outright method.)

Suggestion for Black Lion Salvage Kits

Zaxares.5419

I’m curious as to whether the Upgrade Extractors are actually a good seller for ANet. (If it is, then you can bet that nothing will change.) If it isn’t, then there’s potential for new solutions to be added. Mine would be as follows:

New Mystic Forge recipe:
- 250 Bloodstone Dust
- 100 Empyreal Fragments OR 100 Dragonite Ore
- 1 Mystic Salvage Kit
- 5 Thermocatalytic Reagents

This gives you 1 Perfect Salvage Kit, which functions identically to an Upgrade Extractor, but has 5 uses. (If used on a two-handed weapon or a piece of Ascended gear with infusions on it, you pick which upgrade you wish to extract. It does not give you all upgrades on an item in a single use.)

I’m not in-game to check at the moment, but check to see whether or not that massive increase in bids is just some speculators who have placed thousands of bids at 1c in an effort to falsely push up demand. (This has happened before with the Southsun aquabreathers and several of the Black Lion Ticket weapons.)

In short, it’s likely to be “fake demand” that will be pulled as soon as the price reaches what the speculator wanted and he can dump his stock. Don’t get fooled by it.

I still believe prices for Unid Dyes will improve in the long-term, but it will be months down the track, not so soon after the Apr 15th update.

Killing in the Obsidian Sanctum

in WvW

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

Personally, I never initiate attacks in Obsidian Sanctum. I go in under the presumption that people in there just want to complete the JP (but I instantly go on the alert if I see enemy players standing in suspicious locations), and usually the truce is observed. However, it would also be foolish not to take precautions against unexpected attack. Bring blocks, stability, and cheese-off skills like Fear, launch, push/pull to discourage people from attacking you. (Sometimes all it takes is a Fear that doesn’t even send them off an edge that sends your attacker scurrying for cover.)

Part of the challenge/uniqueness of Obsidian Sanctum is the fact that it is a PvP zone. The traps scattered throughout the JP are also a clear indication that PvP is welcome there. That said, I do agree that players using cheap tricks to troll other players in there (pulls in specific locations that make you fall and die, for example) is low and unsporting.

If there’s somebody camping the JP, you can always leave and come back later. If the troll has nobody to bother, they’ll get bored and leave eventually. 1 hour+ of sitting in an empty JP is your most effective weapon against them.

Just adding my thoughts on a few things here:

- Pyre Fierceshot. I actually HATED him in GW1. He was the quintessential example of a ruthless, conniving villain who would backstab his allies as soon as he had no further use for them. He started the revolt against the Flame Legion, then immediately fled so he wouldn’t have to risk his own skin being a figurehead for the revolution. He freely admits to the GW1 hero that, were it not for the fact that his warband could not defeat the hero and his party (Heroes + henchies), he would never have entered into the alliance with them.

In terms of roleplay, my characters would have cooperated with him until Captain Langmar and the other Ebon Vanguard were freed, and the Flame Legion stronghold destroyed. Then I immediately challenge Pyre to a fight to the death. (Or let Gwen challenge him.)

In short, Pyre was just as reprehensible as the Flame Legion he was fighting. He’s not a good example of modern, tolerant Charr.

- Sympathetic Separatists. There are a few Separatists in Fields of Ruin that have dialogue or events that show not all of them are fanatics intent on slaughter. One event has you escorting a Separatist deserter back to his unit; he joined up because he wanted to “kill Charr”, but left after realising that the Separatists also count any humans who support the peace treaty among their enemies. Another Separatist up near Craze’s Folly has abandoned her fellows after discovering that they were stockpiling massive amounts of explosives and had plans to use them against the peace delegation. I think her words were “I signed up to fight, not for mass murder”.

It would only be logical to presume that many Separatists could, possibly, be talked down and persuaded to adopt a more peaceful method of objection. There are plenty of Separatist Sympathisers in Ebonhawke that you can do this to, for example. It’s just that we can’t do so in the game due to game limitations.

What makes you think the Flashback NPC’s content would be any easier than the original Living Story? For example, say you wanted a Monocle. Or the Jetpack. You’d still have to complete the original Molten Facility or Aetherblade Retreat via the NPC, at its original difficulty. How is that any different from the players who completed the dungeons during the original release and got lucky? All that’s changed is that instead of only having 2 weeks to farm the dungeon, you have however long the lifespan of GW2 is.

Never rule out something as “never coming back”. If there’s demand for it, and if a business can profit from it, odds are highly likely it will come back at some point.

Caledon Wurm Killed In One Hit *Major Bug*

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

I think the best solution for this would be to change Feedback so it only works on the next X amount of projectiles. This would preserve the skill’s tactical use against bosses, but not break world bosses like the Wurm. The reason why the Wurm is dying in one hit to Feedback is because he shoots dozens of projectiles at players, each one doing thousands of damage. Since Feedback reflects ALL the projectiles he shoots, he suddenly takes hundreds of thousands of damage and dies almost instantly.

The same fix should be applied to other Reflect skills too, of course.

Mystic Forge Superior Runes/Sigils

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

I’d take the change too. Big market shake-ups are nothing new to GW2; yes, the economically-savvy will profit (and maybe some lucky first-hour players too), some speculators will miss out, and prices across the economy will adjust. But that’s really no different to what we have now every time there’s a big patch that changes the market. The end result would be that runes/sigils would have a more uniform price range, which should make them more readily available to the average player.

I don’t think prices for mats would end up spiking much higher than before either. I honestly doubt that the majority of the supply for the Rune/Sigil market is coming from crafters (except for certain runes/sigils where the crafting materials are dirt cheap). More than likely it’s coming from Major Runes/Sigils salvaged from Rares and thrown into the Mystic Forge for the odd Superior rune back, as well as Sup Runes/Sigils salvaged from dungeon gear and dropped/forged Exotics.

And no, I don’t have stocks of cheap runes/sigils stored up for this. XD I’m a hoarder, and what I buy typically tends to be for my own use.

BUG: Runes/Sigils working in Activities

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

People have probably noticed by now that since the Wardrobe update, Runes and Sigils are working in Activities (probably because Activities work off the PvP system). Unfortunately this has led to an increase in unscrupulous players deliberately exploiting this bug to cheat their way to victory in various Activities. The worst offender I saw last night was in Southsun Survival; one player was using Sigil of Geomancy + Sigil of Ice on his weapons to inflict massive amounts of damage on nearby enemies whenever he picked up/dropped bundle weapons, and also using Runes of the Dolyak to gain inherent health regen that basically negated any damage he received from hunger.

On more than one occasion, when it became clear that he could not win against the other surviving players, he swam out into the ocean where he could not be attacked (by either other players or by ghosts), and then just outlasted the other player since his health regen from the Runes was enough to prevent him dying to hunger. (And this was a dead giveaway that the player knew full well what he was doing too.)

This REALLY needs to be fixed, and soon. It’s making a mockery of the Activities. Some bans/suspensions for players deliberately exploiting the bug would be a good move too. :P

Still Too Much Thick Leather

in Crafting

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

It would just be a logical way to spread price disparity across different material tiers. Tier 5 leather is oversupplied; Tier 4 leather is undersupplied. A demotion recipe would bring the two together very quickly. Long-term, it would ensure that no material tier ever becomes oversupplied or undersupplied as long as there is demand for the finished product (Ascended gear, which I think is in a pretty good spot for time/money investment as a long-term hook to keep players playing).

Of course, the question is whether it’s actually enough of an issue that ANet would need to do something about it. I doubt it’s high priority, but as Ulion pointed out, ANet has taken steps in the past to address oversupply, so it could happen.

In any case, all of this doesn’t really affect me personally since my playstyle ensures that I have sufficient materials of the various tiers for my own needs without needing to turn to the TP. (Although I do often buy up cheap crafting components if they’re cheaper to obtain on the TP than crafting them myself.)
