If real world plants were sapient, they would probably also be much less bothered about incest than we are. Self-pollination is a common occurrence among many plant species; if you think incest is squicky, imagine fertilising yourself and growing your own child purely from your own sperm. XD

Would You Fight To Reclaim Ascalon?

in Human

Zaxares.5419

That’s a very good last point, Tobias. Charr society is still very much a militaristic-oriented one. They are peaceful with other races insofar as they have a common enemy to fight (the Dragons). If/when the Dragons are defeated, and the ghosts/Flame Legion dealt with, the other races of Tyria might need to be wary of who the Charr decide their next enemy is.

Of course, this could be several generations later, and by then Charr society has matured by then to be more cosmopolitan and less expansionist. (You can already see it happening to Charr who leave Ascalon to settle elsewhere.) Future Charr generations may move away from their warlike origins and spread out into more sedentary, peaceful occupations.

I don’t get where people form the idea of if there were no dragons the Charr would suddenly invade everybody else.

Do note, before Kralk awoke, the Charr were only at war with Ebonhawke. They couldn’t care less about Kryta or the other nations. Even then, I recall reading that the siege of Ebonhawke went from all three legions, to just Iron, to just a small potion of Iron legion.

Even the Charr intro cutscene shows this. I forget the exact wording but it basically was “The humans took our land, and they have paid for that in blood.”

Paid, not “Will pay.” Iron legion at least seems to consider the debt of ‘blood’ from the humans/Ascalonians to be paid and delat with.

Similar to the idea that if the dragons/other threats weren’t around, the Charr would launch into some giant war against the human gods or spirits of the wild :/.

A militaristic culture basically defines worth and accomplishment through conflict and warfare. Citizens living in such a culture basically need to prove themselves by defeating powerful foes and conquering others. They might be able to sublimate these urges into more peaceful/tolerated activities like sports or gladiatorial tournaments, or privateering/counter-insurgency work, but the Charr seem to have an innate racial belief that they are meant to conquer the world, thereby demonstrating their superiority. (My own Charr Warrior certainly ascribes to such a belief in RP.)

The Charr need an enemy to fight against, whether it be a common one, or against each other. If they do not have one, they will find one, because it is how they define their existence. As I mentioned in my initial post, the only way out of this is if the entirety of Charr society changes so that it is no longer a militant culture (which is very possible, given enough time).

That’s actually why I didn’t join the Legendary acquisition group. Most of the Legendaries are just too over-the-top for my tastes. I like my weapons to be visually impressive, but not so flashy so that it basically IS the most stand-out thing about my character. I want it to complement my appearance, not BE my appearance.

The only Legendaries I actually find appealing are Kudzu, the Flameseeker Prophecies and Kraitkin, but unfortunately they don’t suit the aesthetics of my characters who could use them.

Too much Silk

in Crafting

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

I agree that Silk was overcorrected. It should probably be dropped back to 50 AND the amount of cloth scraps from salvaging increased by 50%. This should help ease the scarcity of cloth scraps which are needed by all 3 armor crafting disciplines, and the one that is hardest to farm.

Technically leather is in the same spot, but the prices are kept in check by its much lower demand.

I get a fair bit of Dragonite by doing the Karka Queen event daily and joining in the EotM karma trains. Gold to Gem Ratio

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

You seriously think people will move to another country just to get a better rate on their cash to gems transactions? Seriously? O.o

I do understand your concerns. Trust me, I do. Those who know me on these forums will know that I’ve argued strongly against the gem store offering anything beyond convenience or cosmetic goods. And as long as the gem store does only that, I feel that the playing field is relatively fair.

I’d actually say that the gem-gold ratio is quite balanced right now. Despite the numerous sales we’ve had lately, the ratio has not broken past the 7 – 8g gold barrier for many months. It seems that we’ve reached the point where players are willing to spend cash for gems and convert it into gold, at a roughly equal ratio to players trading gold for gems.

If the ratio increases beyond current levels, that would mean that players are earning gold at a faster rate. That actually points to there being inflation within the game, which ANet could only fix by reducing the amount of gold players get. (And you can imagine how that would go down. There are already complaints over diminishing returns, the nerfing of coin from Champ bags, and the Megaserver architecture which would nerf alt-farming.)

I can see how the recipients of the 2v1 might feel upset at being ganged up on by two different zergs (admittedly, I took part in a TC+JQ zerg beating back Blackgate into their spawn point on JQBL on the weekend), but the BG player on the previous page is right.

In a war, two weaker powers will inevitably team up to fight the bigger power. BG is king of the hill at the moment, so SoS/TC/JQ will more than likely team up to bring them down. However, as the Tournament goes on, alliances are likely to fracture as servers jockey for first place. Double-crosses should be fully expected.

I’m not privy to the war councils on TC (I’m just a filthy casual), but personally I think TC is angling for 2nd/3rd place. We don’t have the numbers/coverage to come out on top once the final weeks arrive and things likely turn into an “every server for itself” situation, but we can place ourselves beforehand to come in behind the leader if we play our cards right.

It should also be noted that this was back during the time of GW1. Modern Charr armies now have guns, tanks and airships. (Granted, those steam devices may not work very well in bitter, high-altitude cold that can make iron brittle enough to shatter by hand.)

Although on the other hand, the Norn have also learned the benefit of banding together and working in groups. We have the Wolfborn, for example; back in GW1 it was almost unheard of to have a police force at all. A Norn enforced the rules of his homestead via his own strength of arm.

Which Elder Dragon is the strongest overall?

in Lore

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

Wrong. The Movement of the World mentions risen (specifically called the Orrian dragon’s minions) fighting on the northern Elonian border.

There is not a single mention of Kralkatorrik’s minions being in conflict in the desert or with Joko’s undead.

Also, the Branded are moving south by southeast. But as we see in Edge of Destiny, at least upon the Brand’s creation they head south because that’s the last they saw Kralkatorrik heading. Think of it like the Walking Dead zombies when a herd shows up at the end of Season 2 – they see a helicopter and start following it, but they loose sight of the helicopter, however they continue moving in the direction they last saw/heard the helicopter going.

Whoops. Maybe I misremembered Joko’s forces battling the Risen as battling the Branded instead. It just seemed more logical to have the Awakened battling the Branded given that Elona abuts the Crystal Desert, rather than having the Risen cross the Crystal Desert.

I wonder if Kralkatorrik has any means of communicating with his Branded telepathically… Or if he even gives orders to his minions at all. The only Branded that I’ve seen speak thus far (Victurus the Shattered, in the Iron Marches) doesn’t give the impression that he has any real goal aside from killing all non-Branded he comes across.

To unlock a skin for the Wardrobe, you need to either:

a) Equip the item on a character so it becomes soulbound/account bound.

b) Salvage the item.

c) Destroy the item.

If people are just after unlocking skins for the items, then it makes the most sense to salvage the item for possible Ectos, Dark Matter, Inscriptions/Insignia, Runes/Sigils since the item itself can’t be resold any further regardless of how the skin is unlocked.

Oh, believe me, I am NOT a fan of RNG. I fully support the Precursor Scavenger Hunt idea and eagerly look forward to when it will be implemented. I am also an ardent supporter of the SAB model of rewards where you can bypass the RNG, but at the cost of having your item be account-bound so it’s only usable by you.

I don’t have exact numbers, no, but it really does feel like every 10th or so player I pass by in town or WvW has a Legendary. (This number goes up when I attend things like TTS attempts on Tequatl or the Wurm.) Going by that old data John provided about the number of Dusks being sold in a day, I think it’d not outside of reasonable bounds to assume that at least a couple of Legendaries are created every single day. True, some of these are by players who are making multiple Legendaries, but I think the vast majority of them would be first-time Legendary owners.

I’d also love to know just how many players are actively going for a Legendary too. I know that I and my girlfriend aren’t; me because I’m not particularly taken by any of the current Legendary aesthetics, and her because she doesn’t play the game enough to justify sinking that much time/money into it.

Slightly in the short-medium term, but it will fall in the long-term once players unlock it on their account and have no further need to buy more. Blue/Green dyes will crash hard, but they won’t become completely worthless due to what Wanze mentioned about gamblers buying them up to throw them into the Forge. (Same way that “worthless” Major runes/sigils don’t completely crash either.)

That’s basically the root cause of any complaint in a game’s economy: “It’s too hard or taking too long to get what I want!”

I’m not against making it much easier for players to get luxury items or exclusive skins, but I fear that would have a detrimental effect on the longevity of the game (as players tend to move on once they’ve accomplished their goals), and on the feeling of satisfaction players have when a goal is achieved. That said, we do need to constantly monitor the goal posts so that they are achievable by most players who set out to reach them.

Legendaries, while a hard slog, are definitely doable by a large segment of the player base as evidenced by how many we see in the game every day. I think players might just have the impression that you should be able to get them within a couple months, when they’re really intended to be more of a year (or two) long goal.

Calm down, Byron. Your last post comes across as needlessly hostile.

I don’t have access to any more data than you do (updated wealth statistics sheet, JS? Pleeeeasseee?), but my own observations of the TP on a few occasions makes me inclined to believe what John is saying. The market in GW2 is HUGE. Like, REALLY HUGE. I was there when the Great Dye Frenzy of 2014 took place, and seeing all those dyes disappear and prices undergo such crazy swings in the space of just an hour before things stabilised told me that there must have been thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of players all frantically scrambling to try and get the most of the situation. (The fact, too, that the market stabilised as quickly as it did tells us a lot about the ability of a market to find equilibrium after a sudden shock.)

No single player, no matter how wealthy, can hope to come close to the kind of impact this mass of trading power the collective GW2 player base has. Even a cartel of wealthy players would probably find themselves hard pressed to match it.

But WHY do they look like airships/zeppelins? If the ships are powered and kept aloft by magic, why do they look like they have a central balloon? Look at the Zephyrites, for comparison. Their ship is kept aloft purely by magic and wind, and it shows. I’ll grant that we never received an explanation for how exactly the airships function, but if your ship is propelled by magic and does not rely on external factors, why not make it a flying tank? A miniature Death Star with solid steel armor everywhere and bristling with cannons? Why an airship, in particular?

Pay attention to what they say in chat, and join their voice chat server if you’re feeling social. (I usually don’t since I like playing in silence and I find other people talking to be distracting.) After a while you’ll start to get a feel for why players do what they do and what are the larger strategies being employed. (e.g. why Commanders will usually cap a Camp before attacking a Tower or Keep (They want their followers to have maximum supply for building siege), or why they suddenly bail out of one map when you were doing well attacking a structure (a more important structure, such as a fully upgraded Keep, is in danger of falling to the enemy and needs reinforcements).

New Aetherblade Air-Captain?

Zaxares.5419

@Herald: Yeah, when I refer to “technology”, I tend to mean stuff like steampunk, science-fiction gadgets and modern day mechanical devices. I acknowledge that building massive infrastructure for irrigation (if we’re continuing that example) would make more sense if we’re dealing with agriculture on a massive scale, but the size of the game world doesn’t really match up. It could cost thousands of gold to build something like the Queensdale water pumping station and the associated pipes (a structure which is routinely targeted and sabotaged by bandits, I should add); in contrast, depending on workforce competition, you might be able to get that Water Elementalist to work for you for 5 silver a day. And if he gets killed by Bandits, well, you can probably find a replacement worker that same day. (Orrr just hand out karma rewards to any adventurers who run past to get them to water your fields for you. XD)

As far as portals are concerned, that’s another thing. During the Lost Shores Living Story, we saw how quickly people could get waypoints up and running on a new island. (Apparently Waypoints are discrete magical devices that can simply be brought to a location and then activated.) Wouldn’t it be easier to just transport goods and supplies by players running through Gates and Waypoints rather than building huge, expensive airships?

@panzer: Yes, that’s exactly what I mean. Technological advances in a magical world should progress along making magic more effective, since that’s the proven, most efficient tool to accomplish things. Instead of a large water pumping station, why not have smaller, magical towers in each field that generate a constant supply of clean water through magic (utilising said Geyser and Healing Rain spells)?
