Why s/d? Scepter is a bunker weapon — mainhand dagger will outburst and outdamage against any competent player. Scepter sustained damage is horrible as well.

Because the Air burst is far superior. I prefer D/D, but many use S/D for that specific purpose.

If you want a D/D build simply run 0/15/0/25/30 with Valkyrie/Berserker mix.

And Judge, you need to copy-paste the link. It was just an example since Phantaram runs it.

How is air burst better than a Burning Speed>Ring of Fire combo with Arcane Wave and Missile? One combo gives me might stacks and hits aoe on top of it all — the other does not. Perhaps air burst can be done more frequently, but it is single target — and if you’re going for single target burst the mesmer and thief provide far better burst.

Fotm and guard vs thief

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

I play as a guard and run in the 30s and 40s. Guardians are very good in fractals, which I think is justified given that they are not that great in regular dungeons because they are DPS races and defense counts for very little.

I’ve found many fractals at the higher levels are easier with a thief in the group, and some of the best fractal players I’ve seen play thieves. I agree that glass backstab thieves have no place in fractals, but frankly any build of any class that is not team oriented is not useful in a fractal. Off the top of my head:

- While not as much coverage as mesmer or guardian, thieves can block projectiles with smoke screen. Very useful when shields are on cooldown fighting bloomhunger or the asura golems,or getting through harpies.

- Bomb event in dredge fractal – way way better if you can have a thief stealth solo the bombs. On 30s or 40s, this usually saves a death or two.

- Shadow refuge is a lifesaver, useful in all dangerous situations.

- Shortbow blast spam heals off of engi/ranger/tree item water fields, particularly useful in cliffside, but really anywhere you take a lot of damage.

There are more but those all strike me immediately. All of these require a thief that is thinking about more than spamming backstab, but as I said any class that is thinking about only damage is not going to be useful in a fractal above level 10 or so. Thieves have plenty of team friendly tools if they use them.

It’s called Ash Legion Spy Kit. Use them.

People ask for guardians because of mass group boons, just like the ele, and on top of that you can run berserker gear on a guardian and still be tankier than most light armor classes in PVT gear. Add to that reflection and group stability, and an aoe full group heal — you see where this is going. No class besides the Guardian brings to the group this level of performance enhancement and damage mitigation.

Good thieves are fun to have, but it’s nothing you can’t substitute for a warrior that will do more damage at less risk.

I, too am tired of the kitten fractal 3-40+ groups asking for guardians 24/7, but it is what it is. PvE is a Warrior/Guardian world because one does so much more damage than the other classes, and the latter is the best tank/group support in the game.

It’s kittening stupid how you can be rewarded for missing abilities in stealth. Stealth openers should never be guaranteed. If you hit someone invulnerable/blocking/blinding while in stealth, you should be de-stealthed.

I’d love if my Fire Grab was refunded to me if it were to miss or hit an invulnerable target. Ditto for shatters and 100b.

Any elemental but the earth elemental dies in 2-3 hits in a dungeon, especially fractals. Elementals die even faster in wvw. And, to be honest, they do no damage whatsoever to begin with.

The elite is pointless in most situations because

a) Group stability is often present from Stand Your Ground
b) The utility of tornado can more reliably be fulfilled by Updraft+Earthquake.
c) This skill makes you lose serious offensive momentum.

If Tornado put out some real aoe hurt like dagger storm and maybe snared/blinded on its swirling strikes, it would become a far more useful elite. It’s just not worth it to trade all your damage and control for an aoe knockback punching bag.

I would seriously reevaluate the knockback design. An aoe knockback, let alone any knockbacks, is highly undesirable in PvE where mobs are meant to be balled up anyways. You’ll seriously be kitten your groupmates by using an elite that spreads mobs away from aoe/cleave/dark fields. It would be better if it acted as an aoe pull periodically.

Ele is OP...at mele range?

What do you think makes us worse than any other profession?

Compare D/D to a Warrior with Hammer & Double-mace. That’s full on Controll for the Warrior! (Assuming that neither uses any Utility nor any Traits, which is probably for the benefit of the Warrior)

Warrior: AoE knockback, Stun, Cripple, AoE Stun. Daze, Line knockdown, Stun.

D/D Elementalist: Chill, Aura Chill. Aura Stun, AoE Knockback. AoE Cripple, Immobilize, AoE Stun, AoE Cripple

. . . your typical mage archetype is considered dangerous only when at mele range…how absurd is that?” It’s a caster, not a Mage. Why is it bad that we get to do some Melee? Frankly, it’s my favorite part.

. . . the developers come and tell me that the ele class is supposed to have the best control skills in the game” SOME of the best.

. . . with a staff, where basically you can’t stop an opponent from reaching you in a short time” What? Sorry? I assume that you don’t roll around with a staff in sPvP, so that just leaves us to NPCs. We’ve Burning Retreat, Frozen Ground, Gust, Static Field, Unsteady Ground and Shockwave. If you can’t stop a pack of enemies with all that, you should get pass the newbie-state before complaining on the forums. They’re not going to change the roles of the Staff, scepter, or any other weapon, because there’s no need.

These staff escape skills have slow activation times allowing for plenty of reaction time to the opponent or are slow projectiles like Shockwave that can easily be dodged.

And you know what? It doesn’t matter, because what good are escape skills when the weapon has no offensive momentum/capacity. Lava Font is ground targeted on a small circle, Eruption needs to be paired with Shockwave to land on anyone (much like Dragon Tooth, Phoenix, and Shatterstone), and you will not outdps your opponent with mere Fireball spam.

There is a reason people use dagger/dagger, and it’s the application of damage. There’s no 2 second activation time or static field of effects that can easily be avoided in a game where people carry two dodges, vigor, and superior sigil of energy besides their own mobility abilities like shadowstep/etc.

So, neither the scepter or the staff have the sustained pressure or burst (if you seriously think air scepter 2-3+arcane skills is burst I have some choice words for you considering real burst classes like the mesmer and thief and warrior).

That’s pretty much the case for every current ranged weapon in the game except thief shortbow (because their initiative system lets them kite well and trick shot hits hard baseline in between steal+mug burst) and rifle warrior (hits like a truck, and when something gets close just switch to bull’s charge/bolas and frenzy 100b>Whirlwind Attack). Pistol/Pistol burt thief works but it is somewhat lacking in the defensive department against any target that can weather the burst.

Melee is just really strong at the moment outside zerg situations.

Axe/Dagger?

On a point it’s fairly simple to hit multiple targets, actually. Greater Marks just makes it fire and forget. Axe autoattack does not pierce. Axe autoattack does not generate life force. I’m not convinced on axe’s position other than trying to stack vulnerability at the price of terrible damage. Whatever damage you gain from vulnerability stacking is lost by a large margin on the sustained damage of the weapon.

Super Squad’s Erho showcased just fine how to use a staff without greater marks at the beginnings of the game.

Really, if I just wanted to stack vulnerability and strip boons, why not just bring a mesmer? Why wouldn’t well of suffering be sufficient? The aoe chill and poison and aoe fear control to neutralize points and interrupt stomps/heals is part of what makes the necromancer stand out compared to classes that ACTUALLY do damage (and don’t kid yourself that your power build will ever hold a candle to a mesmer or thief or warrior or d/d ele, because it doesn’t).

Axe/Dagger?

Zenith.7301

Staff is terrible unless you have traited for it; using trait points that should go for better power build options. If you are going WvW, then staff is great, but you still need to burn those points. You need to look past strictly one section of the game. Axe has its own niche; staff is a support weapon, dagger is a single target raw damage weapon, scepter is condition damage, and axe is AoE control/support.

If I can be kited at 600 range, how would dropping it even further make anything better? That makes absolutely no sense.

Aoe control? An aoe chill, an aoe fear,

Staff is never terrible. Not even untraited. Maybe more difficult use without greater marks, but that’s it. An aoe poison and chill and a condition transfer and an aoe fear can never be terrible. AoE regen and 3 stacks of bleed aoe are never terrible.

The only thing terrible about the staff is the projectile speed and damage for #1. And the Axe hasn’t got much on it.

Or maybe your view is skewed by not caring to actually look at the numbers. Axe does NO damage outside A2 channel, which people can dodge/block/interrupt. It jusat doesn’t, and I worry that you’ve actually not tested other classes if you’re willing to claim that axe does good damage — that’s just a total lack of perspective.

I can’t fathom any necro skipping a staff in competitive pvp. You are seriously foregoing 600 range on a weapon whose autoattack does similar #1 damage to the axe, are missing out on aoe chill/poison, condi transfer, aoe fear for interrupts, grants aoe regen to allies, and with traits pretty much keeps your life force bar filled. All for a single target vulnerability stack on miserable damage autoattack, a channel that casts longer than a Blurred Frenzy and does less damage, and an aoe cripple/retal?

I actually thought power necros were running d/f and staff. Limiting your range to 600 is insanity — any knowledgeable player will kite the crap out of your axe as easily as they can kite you while on dagger. It’s just a current weakness of the weapons until they give us the DS teleport back or make Dark Pact a ranged gap closer.

They either rely on boons or lots of healing. Either way, a necro busts them pretty well.

And lots of evasion/blind or lots of CC, like the engineer. Boon strip is undeniably powerful, but it is not the only tool necros are sought for.

I’d love for the axe to be a better weapon, but its #1 is just dreadful, its life generation is dreadful (because people will actually dodge your channel), and only #3 seems like the stand out skill ( huge aoe cripple and retal is pretty neat). The dagger outclasses it in damage (because the axe is a single target just like the axe), LF generation, and for aoe damage and utility nothing touches the staff.

Says the guy who pretends you can stack high vulnerability with the axe autoattack considering the debuff baseline duration, and who brings someone else putting conditions as an argument against removing vulnerability (let’s not mention that on the other side an ele comes with water attunement and cleanses those new conditions right off).

If you’re killing people with a low duration chill, they were going to die anyways.

And most importantly now you die because you were using a garbage weapon that is not only selfish compared to a scepter, but has less aoe pressure.

What rank are you again? Thank you for your epicly well-worded reply steeped in deep facts and situational tactics.

On a side note, all of our weapons for power build are selfish. It’s why we thrive on bunker killing. Our chill has multiple ways to apply it, and so the low duration is awesome. I can reapply it quickly.

Apparently you have never tried axe. 2 per auto attack means in 3 seconds I can have 6 on you for every axe 2 attack (which is the attack the aim to dodge) I can get 6 stacks of vulnerability. Is someone is dumb enough to cleanse it (yes I mean an ele) There isn’t an ele around who would waste jumping into Water or using a condition cleanse on Vulnerability.

If you haven’t realized that the Necro is the single best bunker killer regardless of the bunker class, than you have never played a necro or versed a good necro.

Finally, at what point is carry an axe selfish? Vulnerability helps my team. Doing my job helps my team. I have a job to do every single time it’s to pick out the target and kill it. Bunker or Ranged player. If I don’t do my job that’s selfish, carrying the scepter in a power build is selfish. Doing aoe when focus fire and boon removal is necessary is selfish.

It’s almost like you have never played anything but zerg on zerg.

Bring your necro and I’ll show you on a ranger what actually debunkers. Your power necro is subpar; don’t fool yourself. Not all bunkers rely on boon stacking to hold a point.

The axe is a selfish weapon because whil you bring 6 stacks of vulnerability, outside your #2 you are doing negligible damage. I’ll just bring a mesmer with null field and boon removal on shatter for vulnerability, boon removal, and group mobility to boot, while doing considerably more damage than your power necro ever will.

Show me the top QP team videos where necros aren’t running a staff+scepter/dagger.

It’s just plain stupid to run an axe over a dagger if you’re set on running a power build. Dagger does so much more damage.

I’m hoping the Feb update will include either other sources for ascended amulets that have different stats or an update to the laurel vendor with more stat combinations.

Exaggerating? I spvp so no wvw scrubs skimping on condi removal utilities. You have no other vulnerability on a short cool down. Ele bunker with earth´s embrace trait for stability will laugh at conditions with ether renewal. Null field keeps removing conditions, and mesmers trait for condi removal on shatter often. Ranger with signet of renewal and empathic bond is pretty much immune to condition stacking.

Condi specs are rather screwed in this game relative to power/prec/critdmg specs. I only run focus when I´m on a debunkering spec for the extra boon stripping.

sPvP is full of scrubs. People who use sPvP to talk about builds are scrubs. No one on any team in tourney’s or spvp or wvwvw wastes it on Vulnerabilyt. Btw, axe 1 applies 2 stacks of vuln constantly so you make take my stack of 15 off, but now I have 6, now 10. Now someone else just applied a stack of 20 bleeds, but you have 10 seconds before you can cleanse conditions again. With Focus offhand I just stripped your buffs, now you have no buffs wasted your condition cleans on a 12 stack of vuln, so now I can apply chill without a worry.

Now you die because you are spending cooldowns foolishly

Spectral walk and plague his burst attempts. You got death shroud, 2x dodge, and plague to foil his burst. Then turn around with a mainhand dagger, lay down well and immobilize and blow him up. Nothing kills a thief better than immobilize.

Good pistol thieves with offdagger or dual pistol are a different story, though, because they can outdamage your staff and outheal your damage while you can´t outheal theirs.

I fail to see how 75 more attack over the focus can be bad

75 extra damage on one weapon set, or the vulnerability from Focus will give you 12% extra damage on anything. When you are hitting for 1k or higher and that 12% is 120 damage or more I don’t know why you’d choose 75 damage.

You should use weapons because you prefer the skills they give, not because of the numbers on them.

Except everyone and their mother has condition removal besides glass cannon warriors, and you´re betting on playing against morons who won´t be pressing water attunement or cleansing wave or empathic bond or shadow arts traits or null field, etc.

I far prefer in that case condi manipulation+blind and an aoe weakness and 3 stack bleed than a single target short duration chill and a bouncing vulnerabity attack.

As for the OP, the reason why people don´t use axe is because it only works against noobs who don´t dodge the channel, which is the only damage and life force generation the weapon has.

What? The guardian evades skills with about the 4-5 blocks they can get on demand. The ranger IS a mobile class — maybe you’re not making a good use of monarch’s leap and the double-pounce gap closer mechanic.

Surviving a zerg as a guardian on cleric gear is stupidly easy. I don’t know what horrible spec guardians you run with, but a properly specced and geared guardian in wvw can pretty much stay in a zerg for a good 10 seconds under focus fire and get out with a smart leap of faith or renewed focus.

Guardians can get away fine. They’re just bad chasers and vulnerable to ranged specs. Ranger range means nothing when their damage is garbage.

This is what needs to be fixed with rangers.

You send 2 players to kill a competent bunker ele or guardian — why is this somehow unreasonable for a ranger now?

Bunkers can’t kill in a reasonable amount of time, so at the very least it should take more than one player to take them down. What’s the point of being a bunker if you’re just going to die eventually to a single player while having little killing power yourself.

You’re proposing nerfs to the only good stuff a ranger has in PvE.

Traps are MEANT to be danger zones, as should be wells. You shouldn’t be able to stand on them and not suffer great pressure. That’s the whole point of an aoe that is not mobile like melee cleave.

The only point I will give you is Empathic Bond, but it is not unique. Condition removal in this game in general is too easily available. Every condition removal in the game should at the very least be on a 30 sec cd or more akin to stun breakers, and it should remove 2 conditions at best.

Good initial damage absorption. Absolutely terrible recovery options.

The elementalist and guardian, despite having the lowest base HP, happen to be the best bunkers because of their sheer access to protection boons and health pool restoration in addition to active defences.

Avoidance>>>>>>>>Mitigation.

Think WoW warlock vs. frost mage. People could train the warlock all day, and despite having better tanking ability than a mage, because targets could have so much uptime on the warlock compared to the mage, the warlock was actually a greater liability to the healer.

Most importantly, classes that need to facetank damage instead of avoiding it innately rely on strong sustained healing. Since healers don’t exist in this game, a a class like the necro will see his HP dwindle while his pitiful damage (it is truly pitiful if you actually have played other classes and are aware of their damage potential) is not enough to outmatch the damage he’s taking in.

The necro is a punching bag. It is the priority target of every team because outside Plague they cannot self-peel and end up being the squishiest train target. More importantly, because it’s backloaded damage is subpar, there is no payoff to a protracted battle. You have no burst, and your sustained isn’t better than burst classes to compensate for the fact that your burst is nonexistent.

A couple of regen alone won’t keep you alive. For example, roamer rangers specced for tanking damage survive not only because of high regen uptime, but because they have other sources of regen and several leap finishers to combo off their water field heal plus 2 available evasions and high vigor uptime +increased endurance regen from trait.

In none the the weaponskills does the necro have blocks. There is a blind on deathly swarm, a very slow projectile. My guardian can mitigate burst very well because with a mace/focus he can block 4 attacks in a row, plus his initial aegis and then another aegis from virtue of courage. And long duration protection for -33% damage.

Poison is relatively useless since many classes’ heals, like the thief’s, clear conditions for the heal. So Poison doesn’t affect their heal. Chill is also an overrated attrition condition considering the effectiveness of burst in the game. Glass cannons can burst down people in way shorter time spans than it takes for chill to make a difference.

You’re exaggerating.

Exaggeration or not that is still make or break in wvw..and that is just one, you can have 5 Ascended..

These things were a poor idea, just look at the damage they wrought to the games community since they were added…

Divided the Community and its still going strong..

why don’t they just let us buy ascended stuff off of TP? You know its just an item… items are sold on TP. Their laurel/relics and tokens in general mechanic suck in my opinion.

Then you get people complaining about GW2 being P2W.

You play the game, earn money like in rpg, you spend money to buy gear, you sell gear you got and don’t like/need. What’s the problem? I could sell everything in gw1’s spamadan… TP has a ******** tax and tones of stuff aren’t even sellable, wtf if u ask me.

First, we can probably expect each piece of ascended to be ~5-10x the price of an exotic. Casuals will have difficulty attaining that. With people already complaining about vertical progression, it’s only natural that the same people would complain about P2W.

Well, if you’re a casual then go play in masterwork gear lol not anyones fault you’re casual. Exotic accessories cost a lot because they require ectos/ori. Ascended doesn’t require anything but spam fotm dailies. I mean you can buy a freaking legendary off TP but not a ring hahaha what a joke.

He has a point…
Why can we buy legendaries and Ascended are Bound, that makes zero sense, why cant we craft them or have them drop in wvw or Champions and Vets, why don’t they come from Jump puzzle chests or dragon chests as the game was designed to played like…

Actually my point was that people would start complaining about P2W.

But to address what you said, if ascended was a drop, they’d be rarer than exotics (which are rare enough as drops already). In the same sense, why shouldn’t legendaries be drops and rewards from JP as well? Just with, much, much higher rarity.

As far as buying ascended from the TP, I’m not against it. The problem is that the ascended on TP would (or should) be much more expensive than their exotic counterparts, and with that you’d have to pay a somewhat high sum of money to get BiS gear and would lead to QQ about P2W.

Edit: I should also mention that legendaries have the same stats as exotics. It’s kind of redundant to use that as an example to contrast with ascended stuff.

You can buy legendaries from the TP already and they are confirmed to upgrade to ascended at some point, so this P2W claim is irrelevant. Ascended gear is already for sale.

You don’t get to define what is acceptable for me.

Mirror Mirror. You don’t get to decide what is acceptable for the majority of players or the kind of players ANet wants to satisfy with their endgame.

I guess you didn’t have a problem with the amount of work you put into a legendary, and would never feel the need to complain about not being able to use your legendary on alts, like you could with any uncustomized GW weapon. Ascended gear isn’t needed in low level fractals and naturally acquired through the progression of it. Yes, currently you have to work a month for one piece of ascended gear you can’t get any other way, but that will change. Instead of condemning ascended gear and gear progression, what needs to happen is the addition of more gear, more ways to get the gear and less restriction on how fast you can get the gear.

I get that they want to extend the life time of the gear progression as long as possible now that the horizontal purists forced them to state that they wouldn’t release any more gear this year, but if they artificially slow down the progress too much, then things situations like yours can occur, where a player wants to work hard on end game gear for an alt and has to basically wait out the daily reset times until he can start where he left off with his main.

This is being worked on, so hold your horses. The wisest thing you can do is not to protest the release of more gear any more, although I doubt ANet would listen this time.

The game has rules, limitations and a range of freedoms. If you feel like you deserve easy to acquire max stat gear but the game doesn’t give it to you, all I can say is tough luck. If someone in GW1 told me he deserved 8 sets of easy to acquire 75k armor equipped with Sup Vigs, I’d slap them up one side of the UW and down the other.

Don’t be thick-headed. I’m not telling you what you need. The post was merely an opinion of what the impact is on ME.

I’m done with posters who insist on making this all about “you lazy, entitled brat”. You don’t know me.

Yeah, they may introduce more ways to acquire items in the future. In case you didn’t notice, they released fractals on 2012 and we finally got rings from30 laurels, months later. Rings which are much more time consuming to get with the laurel system than pristine fractal relics. So, it didn’t change anything.

And I’m not going to sit here and wait 4 months before enough people complain that the grind is unenjoyable to them before they do something about it. Because it should not have existed in the first place. Gear progression beyond exotics was not necessary for the health of the game.

A simple change of making ascended items account bound like the karka accessory would fix everything, because you could trade it among toons as it’s not soulbound on use, and getting more would not be redundant because it would reduce the inconvenience of trading items between characters.

Ascended gear is anti alt? Good thing you have a choice to not grind for BiS gear on every character. I could understand if you have the desire to do high level fotm with all 8 professions, but somehow I think you don’t have that goal.

The desire to wear best in slot gear is entirely generated by the player’s psyche, because exotics are perfectly able to get you through everything except lvl15-20+ fotm. You think you need to be geared up in prestige gear and have 15% more gold find on all characters? I’m afraid you’ll have to put some work into it. Unlike GW1, in GW2 max stat gear in PvE is a privilege, not a right. Okay, that analogy was kinda bad, but the bottom line is its not essential to deck out your characters in ascended until you are a dedicated fotm runner.

The reason I stopped running fractals beyond 400 completed was specifically because of class fatigue. I got tired of playing a shatter mesmer. So, don’t presume I don’t want to run fractals; I just want to be able to run it on whichever of my alts I’m feeling like running. God forbid I were allowed to choose how to play the kitten game.

More importantly, stop telling me what I need or do not need, or what I deserve or do not deserve. That’s for me to determine. I paid for my copy of the game, and I’m entitled to my expectations of what makes a fun, non-traditional MMO game. When you pay for my copy and have done the grind for my legendary (which I got) and put all these hours in the game for me, THEN you can tell me what to expect from this game.

You don’t get to define what is acceptable for me.

So are you mad that you need 30×6 laurels for amulets or that they can’t be shared? If a ring drops, you can give it to your alts. Most fractal stuff is account bound. And if everyone could get the items in 1month, won’t you be complaining that your bored with nothing to do?

I am mad about the laurels. I am mad at the amount of fractal dailies you need to do to gear up multiple characters in multiple specs because, while they are account bound, said items are also soulbound on use — unlike the karka items (which are perfect design).

And excuse me for not considering the gear grind/gearing up characters “content” to complain about. It’s not content — it’s busy work giving you the illusion of content. I have 6 classes to play on, with multiple specs to test and multiple game formats to participate in. Removing the gear grind won’t remove what I can do in the game — it will just not punish me for not committing to a single character with lesser stats.

And when you consider a kitten pendant will give you 20% more gold drops or 15% more karma or 20% more magic find, then that is one hell of a kick to the teeth if you choose to use another character besides the one that has that pendant.

When you have 6 lv80’s, that means to get optimal gear on each, which involves an amulet that I can only get by laurels, it means it will take me 6 months to put an ascended amulet on each toon. It will take an extra month per amulet to buy the utility infusion for extra gold earned or MF. A third of a month for the karma one.

They said this game would not punish you for having alts, but it kittening does. My mesmer is lv27 fractal. If I get bored of doing fractals on my mesmer because, oh I have already completed 467 of them in order to get rings to drop and then infused rings (not everyone was like my guildie and got 5 rings in a week), I can’t freshen things up by using another class. I am stuck with that mesmer because I want to get to lv30 for a better chance at fractal weapons and rings. So, if I want to play on my guardian, I have to start from scratch with no weapon skins or ascended ring rewards for a while. If I want to play my ranger, the same. Engineer, same grind. My ele needs to climb from level 23 to 30, which isn’t fun with PuG’s. You see the trend. I’m kittening stuck on one class if I want the rewards I seek.

And that’s one month for ONE possible spec. Because if somehow on Feb or March they actually make mesmer scepter/staff confusion-condi build actually good in PvE or a support utility build useful, I need ANOTHER month to afford a pendant to support that. Now spread that in case condition builds become more viable in PvE for other classes, or you want a tanky set for wvw but a dps one for PvE dungeons, that’s a truckload of months just for an amulet and an infusion.

I kittening hate ascended gear because it creates a gate of entry. And the whole daily/monthly achievement is contrary to their old statement about people being able to not play and come back and pick up easily. Now you actually have to catch up, and that’s what turned me off WoW. Catching up on gear that was arbitrarily delayed by a dailies system to keep players tied to the game for stat sticks.

P.S. Just put in the kitten different stat amulets as explorable/fractal pristine token rewards. 1800 tokens for an amulet from a dungeon token vendor, so it’s effectively 10 days of full runs of an explorable. Place the popular stats on less popular dungeons to make them more attractive options, such as berserker amulets and pow/vit on Arah and Sorrow’s Embrace,, and Cleric gear in CoE. Make the amulet drop from lv26-30 daily on chance, and cost 15 pristine fractal relics. Then, introduce the costs for WvW badges. Just don’t kittening get in the way of me getting my own kitten items at a reasonable pace instead of being a dick and stretching out a process to half a year.

Another alternative could be to make ascended gear like the karka shell accessory — account bound and transferable across characters so you only have to grind for them once. Account bound but not soulbound on use.

How do you S/D in PvE

I have Meteorologicus, so I use it for fun. Outside of that, the scepter is a weak weapon at the moment. Staff and d/d do more overall aoe and their utilities are better.

The gap between scepter damage and mainhand dagger or staff is vast. Outside Dragon Tooth, which only has stationary burst, all the damage on your s/d setup actually comes from your offhand dagger part of the combination. Scepter does no good damage whatsoever, only semi decent burst (still very situational and low compared to thief and mesmer or warrior burst), but its sustained damage is terrible.

It’s a nice bunkering weapon for pvp though due to rock barrier and the 2 blinds it offers plus the extra condition removal and vigor from phoenix.

Keep in mind pets can really be very strong already though, I’m not sure about how balanced it would be really. My assumption is that they wanted the traits to be “sigils” for pets, letting pets use your stats would be good enough. Also, the 90% dmg reduction for aoe seems rather popular but I think it’d end up making pets set it and forget it which I don’t think is their plan for ranger honestly.

I use 0/30/10/0/30 for extra pet survivability/dmg/etc atm

Sometimes I think these posts come from people who roam 1v1 in WvW or spvp and feel strong because they’re a good dueling class.

I’m talking PvE, specifically dungeons, where AoE and frontloaded damage is king.

Full BM. 20 Skirmishing, 20 WS.

A base damage nerf, so long as it’s compensated by scaling, will be much better. Even at full 30 BM your pet at best crits for 7k on a 30 sec cd ability (the drake). The ranger himself at best with any of his melee abilities crits for 4-5k. That’s nothing relative to what other classes put out.

And grenades got a 30% nerf not only for sigils, but because they’re about to get full stat and attack transfer from mainhand weapons to their kits. And it was only to grenades because, well, it was the strongest spammable aoe in the game. My engineer could easily nail 4k grenade barrages at very low cooldowns.

Pets need to benefit from everything.

It’s absurd that neither my sigil procs, nor my runes, nor my crit damage stat nor my crit chance nor my toughness nor my power nor my food buffs nor my sharpening stone or potions affect my pet — who comprises 1/3 to 1/2 of my damage.

This is beyond crippling. In WoW, boons/buffs on the master are translated to pets. His stats are equally contributed to the pet stats. Nerf their base stats if you must to accommodate gear scaling, but the ranger will never be well off as a class so long as gear is so meaningless to him because half of his offensive aspect doesn’t benefit from it.

And implement a 90% reduced damage to AoE for pets and spirits, please.

Also, melee pets need to cleave in their attacks. It’s a terrible disadvantage when half of your damage is stuck single target while warriors and guardians and mesmers and elementalists are cleaving all of their damage in melee.

Ranged pets need to be 1200 range, not 900.

On the contrary. I’ve been the target of many compliments, some of which complimented my class as well.

Dungeons in this game are easy. It’s more about player skill than a class’s abilities.

This, absolutely. I’ve never gotten any sort of complaints for being a Ranger, whereas I’ve seen people kicked on multiple occasions for being new to a dungeon.

Admittedly though I have received negative feedback in the Jade Maw fractal due to my pet getting targeted all the time. Even my spirits are sometimes targeted. We suffer more from this than mesmers (phantasms and clones) and necromancers (pets) because they can decide not to use minion-summoning abilities, whereas we cannot stow our pet.

A mesmer that doesn’t use illusions just lost 80% of his damage. Believe it or not, illusions are actually a greater proportion of a mesmer’s damage than ranger pets are with rangers.

The only reason mesmers aren’t in the same state as rangers regarding dungeon AoE is because they can more quickly replace illusions.

If Deceptive Evasion (clone on dodge) were taken out, mesmers would be pretty screwed in PvE as that’s their big clone generation tool.

Anyone who doesn’t think Warriors need a rework, I strongly urge you to 1) go to your character selection screen. 2) Create a Warrior. 3) Find a group, and do paid tournament pvp on said Warrior. Just try it. Experience it yourself.

Your eyes will be opened up by how horrifyingly bad Warriors perform in tournaments in comparison to other classes. If you do see a good Warrior in tourneys, it’s because they are working 200% harder than all other players to reach a level of acceptable mediocrity. That same player could hop onto a different class to remove their own handicap, and perform exceptionally better.

Go to you your character creation screen, and create an Engineer or Necromancer. Those are actually demanding classes.

Especially engineers. For an engineer to succeed, he has to spend the effort of many classes combined.

Also, if you’re craving punishment, run a minion necromancer. No wells. No staff.

They are universally hated in PvE because their personal damage is horrid, they have no reasonable group utility, and the pet that does more damage than them mostly does damage to a single target unlike most people in the team and dies much more easily…

Clearly you’ve never used the new drake. Dat Burst aoe.

I personally haven’t had anyone kick or in any way insult me based on my class choice. so saying “universally hated” is a hilariously absurd overstatement.

PS: Gotta love more of the ranger hate threads. JUST what this forum needed.

From your post history, I see you do play a ranger, which begs the question why you hate them so much. Granted, I would like to see the beta damage numbers return too, but I still think the class is at least viable as it is.

Burst aoe? For that I’ll bring my mesmer and do 16k aoe bursts every 12 seconds plus confusion. Or, we can bring a warrior guildie and he can burst aoe for 20-30k 100b instead.

I play the ranger because I kitten well earned my HoM pets and would like to put them to some good use, someday. And because I enjoyed playing the GW1 ranger.

You don’t have to brown-nose a class to play it. If you like beiung a cheerleader for your class, have fun. I play 6 lv80’s, different classes, so I’m well aware of where each one stands instead of being blinded by ignorance of what other classes get and thinking my one class is so good.

I’d like it if people I do dungeons with didn’t beg me to bring my mesmer or ele instead of my ranger to Arah. Because sometimes, you want variety and ranger is what I felt like playing that day but it’s a bad class.

Zenith? In (all) fairness it must be said that … autoattack needs melee-range …

Bad mobility for the warrior? Are you serious? Try playing a guardian or greatsword ranger and then go cry about mobility, please.

Ranger and guardian prefer conditions and range. You dont know what you say, m8.

Warrior is broken. Tons of conditions, tons of bunker-skills and tons of blinkblink-advantages make this class – USELESS. Try, play a warrior and you´ll see.

Conditions and range? WTH? Ranger longbow is garbage, and the shortbow has no range preference. And, most importantly, for every weapon of every profession the melee weapon is superior in damage output, always.

You don’t get to be the only class that should be good at melee damage. Condition builds are horrible against elementalists and engineers and guardians and necromancers, so those are nonstarters.

Guardian and ranger have less mobility in their melee weapons than you. If you are going to pull the range card — bring a kitten rifle yourself, then.

Roles? I'm confused..

Guardians, warriors, and bunker eles tank in your group. Other classes can’t tank dungeon damage.

Warriors and thieves are the premier damage dealers in your group, followed after by eles and mesmers.

Utility wise, eles and guardians are your go to professions. Lesser support classes are necromancers and engineers.

Rangers are a bad PvE class regardless.

How much more damage do you think a full dunk zerker Warrior deals over a dunkmaster Thief?

How do you think a Rifle Warrior’s damage compares to a Pistol Thief or Shortbow Ranger?

What percentage difference would be acceptable if the current paradigm is not acceptable?

Does the thief have a PBAOE ability he can cycle every 6 seconds for 20-30k damage, keep up easily 20 stacks of might 24/7, stand as long in melee as a warrior with double his health and more armor, lacking the utilities of shout healing and fury and might for the group?

Thief might be able to burst better every 45 seconds with signets, but the question of sustained damage goes to a warrior.

And to even place a ranger shortbow next to warrior damage is preposterous. The ranger’s big share of damage lies in his pet, not his weapons. And guess what happens to pets in dungeons and fractals and WvW?

LOL average HP on an ele? More like lowest in game, lower than a warrior with no kitten investment in vitality even when the ele invests 20-30 points in his vit traitline.

And warrior, “average DPS”? Stop joking, please. You have the hardest hitting autoattacks and single hit abilities in the game. Your Whirlwind and mainhand axe do the damage classes like the ranger can only dream off.

Ele burst is also pretty predictable. They updraft you, expect a Burning Speed>Fire Grab. If they ever enter earth attunement, expect earthquake and churning earth. Every single key ability the ele has has an obviously telegraphed animation that is incredibly easy to dodge unless you are CC’d. They have Updraft and Earthquake on relatively high cd’s. Earthquake you can even dodge reliably.

Bad mobility for the warrior? Are you serious? Try playing a guardian or greatsword ranger and then go cry about mobility, please.

Warrior is not as great as mesmers and thieves and dd eles. But they sure as hell are nowhere near broken status like non-gimmicky ranger, engineer, or necro specs. You try playing a class whose only use is boon removal and needs to be babysat 24/7 like the necro, or a class with no damage whatsoever like the engineer, or a class whose only redeeming quality is traps — utilities, not even the ranger’s own weapons.

I have 6 lv80’s. Getting each of them ONE ascended pendant for ONE specific build (so I can’t experiment) means 6 months .

On top of it all, my highest fractal level is not translated to other characters so I can’t break the monotony of doing the fractal with the class that has access to fractal weapon drops and infused rings. So….no ability to switch to alts to freshen the game.
