Elite Specializations & Hero Point Feedback [Merged]

I cant help but think that the weird number of “toilet paper” drops from mobs is the devs unconscious way of saying the game is going down the pan….

Perhaps they thought we’d need something to clean ourselves up with after fighting the new champs.

The question that intrigues me is, what would happen when new specialisations come out, if the cost for each was 400? Would people be willing to do all that work, possibly for multiple alts, if they didn’t already have the 200 points from the core game to start with?

250 is too low. I have 9 characters (including the revenant I created with the HoT launch).
At 250 I can have all but the rev fully done within a day which is far too easy.

9 characters is too low. You should have at least 37. And you should play them all at the same time, with only one hand. Otherwise it’s far too easy.

As one who rides the line on “casual” (I guess you could call me upper casual?), this certainly means I’ll be able to fully fill my Specializations a bit quicker. Though I think 300 points may have been a better compromise.

I have a solution that I think will work for everybody:

Give us an option where we can set how many points we need to unlock the specialisation, ranging from 60 to 1000. Play as you like.

When you buy a Zelda game do you cry to Nintendo that you can’t go onto and complete the last dungeon, have all equipment, at the start of the game? Prerelease they marketed progression in this expansion to that of Zelda and Metroid, you knew what you were getting into.

If, without taking sides, I understand the argument – and to use DOOM as my analogy: some players are arguing that they’re being forced to play through almost the entire campaign only to get the shotgun at the end, when all they wanted was to play through the campaign with the shotgun. Especially since they were given the impression from the box cover art that the shotgun would be standard issue.

Labjax :: think of the LA JP’s with a glider. Then you will know. Also the Pig Iron one or w/e it is called where you go downward across the mine carts. Also a few others were you go up and down… Oh, and do not forget the racing one where you take the bomb through the puzzle from up high to lower through the birds. Imagine that one with a glider! Just… no.

These are not insurmountable obstacles. Don’t allow holding bombs while gliding – that’ll solve griffonrook run. With all jp’s, have a detection box around the start zone and end zone. The jp starts when the player enters the start zone. It ends when they enter the end zone, use their glider or leave the region. If it ends by entering the end zone (without using the glider beforehand) it’s considered a legit win.

This has the added benefit of allowing me to climb up to a high point in a jp and glide off for fun, without any intent of finishing the jp. Options are cool.

EDIT: This has another benefit: it could know when I’m running a jp and tell me how well I’m doing, so I can work on improving. Some kind of stats about my best run and how many times I’ve tried the jp would be fantastic.

If they were to enable gliding in main Tyria, they would have to make map changes and, within the region around JP’s, disable them so you cannot fly in nor fly while inside the space reserved for it. That would likely mean something akin to a large invisible-wall & ceiling box which is never a fun thing to witness.

Indeed. Invisible walls suck, yet Anet seem to sprinkle them around like candy. But there’s no need for invisible walls, as per my response above.

Luckily, I have yet to be a victim of this outside of BWE1 when I tried to glide from the bank/TP of DR down to the repair guy. It only took once to learn my lesson. If I do not see loads of vines and mordrem, I do not use the glider.

There you are, being trained to act unnaturally due to a design limitation. You should be free to glide to the repair guy. We all should.

(Note: there are none in Dry Top and you can not get that high in SW outside the JP or the center fort for it to matter.)

You could still glide from the fort walls in SW. What harm could that do? And dry top would be amazing for gliding. As per my response above, things like the dive achievement would have a start box (at the dive platform) and an end box (at the pool of water) and if you open your glider while going from one to the other it wouldn’t count as a dive.

They can’t do that, especially in cities.
First, probably a lot of terrain not created with gliding in mind ( possibilities to end in places we’re not supposed to go )

I can attest that Maguuma Jungle has places where gliding was apparently not kept in mind and you’re able to get to where you’re not supposed to be. This is understandable in a terrain as irregular as a jungle. In the far-more regular terrain of the city, it would be easier to cover structures with simple collision boxes. And even in the cities now (and indeed the world) without gliders, it’s possible to get into places where you shouldn’t. This particular point is not an argument against gliders in cities.

Suggestion for new Action Camera

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

I was looking for the original action camera thread to make some suggestions, but this will do (with grats to the OP for starting this thread):

1. Could we please get a slider in the Options screen for the vertical position of the targeting reticle? When I used to hold down the right-mouse button, I kept the cursor about a quarter screen from the top, as that gave me best range and view. The action camera’s reticle is dead centre, which is awkward. Can I please position it?

2. When going into action camera mode, please hide any tooltips that were up before you entered the mode. My cursor happened to be over something when I went to action camera, and the tooltips stayed up. Then again, belay that suggestion. Maybe somebody actually finds that useful. I’ll just have to move the mouse into the clear before action mode.

3. Please give me an option to toggle the running speed in action camera mode. It’s great to have such a fast running speed – and in all directions too – but I’d like to separate the speed from the camera itself. I like the camera because it means I don’t have to use the right-mouse button anymore and get RSI. But it runs too fast making it dangerous on jumping puzzles. Please let me toggle the running speed as a separate keybind, or at least a menu option. Then I can use action speed for action, slow speed for jps, and enjoy the awesome camera for both.

Having to grind xp just to be able to explore the world is dissapointing as well. I would love to go around and get all the poi and vistas.

That’s a point I want to second. I’m an explorer by heart, and it was a joy in the core game to just walk about the world, visiting vistas and poi’s. That’s how I spent my first few weeks in the game and I loved it. Some areas were very dangerous but you could wander in and sneak around trying not to get killed. It was thrilling. If you saw a vista up on some cliff, you knew the only thing that you needed to get you there was your ingenuity. You didn’t need to take a short course in jumping.

The major issue with the elite specs is that in a large number of cases, the playstyle of the elite spec is actually a weakness of the base class.

Exactly my thinking when I heard of the tempest. The point of an ele, I understood, was the flexibility to jump between attunements. That’s our weapon swap. The exact opposite of that is to stay in one. Hello tempest.

Even so, I’m working up to getting my tempest. I’m dubious of the mechanic and I want to see how it actually plays. I want my suspicions to be proved wrong.

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

I only want to add one thing to this entire thread in hopes that they actually read it and use it to better the game;

I was having next to no fun in the first few hours in HoT, not because the game itself was not fun, but half of the new zone was gated behind these masteries. I was running around aimlessly in hope of finding events ect, as I had no idea how this zone worked ( I skipped the betas to save myself the burn out). This was not fun, the grind for the first few masteries was just plain horrible, and these events hardly do anything about that.

Now, with the bad said, I am having fun again after I finally got my first few masteries to get around. The gliding and the mushrooms ect are fun and so on. Getting past that hurdle was a struggle but I am glad I did for the most part. If I had to make any suggestion, it’d only to put these few MUST HAVE masteries as story quest rewards. Give us gliding after a story quest, then let us progress more. Give us the bouncy mushroom ’’mastery’’ after another story quest ect ect. This would make the pacing a lot better in my opinion.

THIS ^

My experience was the same. The first few hours were tedium, just struggling to get the glider. Once I got it… I have to admit, the glider is just awesome. The joy it brings somewhat offsets the pain of working towards getting shroom bouncing. I agree with the above – these two essentials should be unlocked early via a story. They’re crucial to giving you the freedom to play your way. Without them, you feel like you’re following a linear path, as some other poster said, because you actually are.

Speaking of shroom bouncing… there are some masteries that just don’t make sense. Learning to read some hylek language or how to use the exhalted devices is a sensible mastery track. But why do I need to learn how to jump on a mushroom? Especially after spending months using the dry top jump crystals, which did not require any mastery? Or all the jumping puzzles I’ve finished, which involved far more complicated parkour with no training. By the six gods, it’s just jumping. You bend your knees and push up. We’ve all jumped on trampolines. I think we can jump on a mushroom. This is a mastery that makes me feel stupid.

But overall, I am enjoying it. The verticality is a welcome concept. Who doesn’t jump off a cliff just to feel like batman, gliding over gotham? Now if only I had a grappling hook I wouldn’t need those mushrooms..

I got an idea which fixes this problem as well as the one with not having any kind of death penalty:

First things first; make dying actually a penalty
-remove armor repair merchants and anvil from exportable zones; keep them in your home instance, and as an upgrade for guild, halls.
-damaged/broken armor cannot be unequipped.
-damaged/broken armor cannot be salvaged
-damaged/broken armor cannot have new upgrades applied to it
-damaged armor will lose upgrade effectiveness; as more armor gets damaged, runes will be “downgraded” to the next lowest tier (Superior will have the same effectiveness as major once two of the six armor pieces are broken, major will have the same effectiveness as minor, etch)
-Further more, for ascended (and when it’s released, legendary) armor
—Damaged ascended armor loses agony resistance
—damaged legendary armor cannot have its stats changed

Now in order to repair your armor:
-Up to exotic, use essence of luck to repair your armor. For ascended and legendary pieces, you have to use globs of dark matter; you cannot repair armor with a lower tier essence of luck than the piece being repaired (ex you can’t repair exotic armor with masterwork luck)
-If you find a place of power, you can commune with that place of power to repair your armor (4 hour cool down on that)

In this system, it incentivizes you to go out and play the content, instead of just running to the anvil at the start of the dungeons, or exiting to Dessa’s lab for fractals.

..no, that would incentivize me to quit the game, or possibly climb a bell tower and snipe people. But seriously, I think you’re missing the point of a dungeon. The fun part is playing the dungeon, not the administration of the entrance requirements. Then again, if administration gets you hot, power to you.

the chapt 8, dragon boss, I can not beat. I don’t have a bunch of people I can team up with…..and even if I did..it shouldn;t “require” that.

…why?

Why should they automatically be soloable?

Dungeons aren’t really and they have story …

Its an MMO learn to group with others or play single player games. Sorry if that comes out harsh.

Harsh is fine, but, aside from presenting a false dichotomy, that’s straying into the “if you don’t like this country, you can leave” territory, and nobody wants to go down that road.

Please don’t keep making me run Silverwastes… I want to tear my eyes out.

All your other points aside, why the hate for sw? It has a lot of variety: defend mules, defend forts, take back forts, look for chests, collect mats, defeating champs that pop up, the breach champs, defending the siege carriers, the battle with the big bosses, the run to the hidden depths with champs along the way, getting to the centre chest in the hidden depths, exploring the hidden depths for lesser chests. Then there’s the jp and also the hidden area in the north where you can herd beatles.

Plenty of options, and unlike a dungeon where you pick a path and stick with it, you can change your strategy in sw anytime. Dungeons and sw each have their pro’s and con’s. There’s no need to be down on sw.

And the best thing about sw…. no gravelings.

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Yeah, it’s sad how lifeless they’ve made Tyria in a lot of ways. I basically stopped playing activities because of the rotation (whenever I’ve had the urge to play I’ve almost always had the wrong day). But more than that, it took flavour out of the world. Hoelbrak being home to keg brawl made it interesting. Same with crab toss being in Southsun.

A daily rotation in the same place just takes away any possible sense of immersion or feeling like you’re in a living world.

Between activities, the loss of SAB, and the stripping of interesting starter content with the NPE the world just isn’t as alive as it used to be.

How can you say that? They redesigned LA so everything would be further apart and require more tedious running around just like a real city. And they put in all those NPCs that stand around the important facilities spouting repetitive and inane chatter, just like real people. If that’s not a living world, I don’t know what is.

New targeting option

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

I would like it if there were check box options for what we can turn on or off to target. For example I would turn off yellow passive mobs but turn on ambients. Why turn on ambients you may ask? Almost at 50% shield mastery is why and I am sick of targeting them with my mouse!. :P

A while back I suggested anet give us some means of prioritising targets, e.g. bosses first, then enemies, then ..whatever.

Someone rightly pointed out that it was a lot of work and not likely to be implemented. Your checkbox idea, while good, is likely to be too much for anet too.

But at the very least, I think they could fix the targeting so that if there is an enemy and a moa in range, it targets the enemy first. Or if the targeting had to be random, at least target only something that’s in my view, not offscreen behind me.

You know what. I just had an even simpler idea. Give us another keybind which only targets enemies. There you go. One key for targeting enemies. Another for targeting whatever.

I suspect foul play. They’re not just npcs. They’re observers from a distant future where the current races of Tyria have died out. These observers have been sent back to study us, but they’re out-of-towners and don’t know our customs. Their historical research was only able to uncover a couple of lines of dialogue from our era so that’s all they repeat incessantly under the mistaken impression that they’re blending in.

Oh, and don’t try to sleep with them. They’re likely to be your descendants and that would cause a temporal paradox worse than the Thaumanova reactor thing.

Running speed in and out of combat

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

kinda like life, too: injured, can’t run as fast, limping a little. might be fun to be more realistic: hurt in the arm? deal less dmg when attacking, hurt in the leg? slower run speed, etc.

That’s an astute rationalisation. I like your idea too though with the caveat that I’d expect there to also be some chance that a hit would be only grazing and have no effect, to be realistic.

Yes, that’s pretty much the reason. The idea is, if you don’t want to fight, stay out of combat (turn off auto-attack, avoid foes, be careful on slopes, …).

If only… but sadly that’s almost impossible (perhaps if enemies had circles around them to indicate their range of observation/attack…) especially on jp’s where it’s designed for enemies to hit you in mid-air, requiring you to stop and kill them before moving on, which breaks the flow of the jp and becomes quickly frustrating when they respawn. I like jps but I find the parts where I have to deal with enemies on them are the least enjoyable and takes away, at least for me, from an otherwise fantastic parkour experience.

The alternative would be slowing down movement speed overall — the current out-of-combat speed is far too fast for combat. And that would be much less fun than the status quo.

Hmm…point taken. So how about an alternative: keep the slow-down, but make out-of-combat speed faster, so we can get around quicker when we’re not fighting.

Revenant Shiro on demand superspeed ftw. Great for that world traveler who wants to just run through enemies on the way to an objective without being slowed by combat aggro.

Oh well, so much for consistency. Apparently, some professions don’t have to stop and deal with aggro. :/

You sound so much like my dad. (Is that you, Dad?) He’s into philosophy too, and long essays on the nature of things. And getting me to proof-read his essays, which isn’t something I’m keen on but I try to help. I know you put a lot of work into this, and it is an extremely impressive piece of work. I hope you won’t be offended if I make a few (constructive) comments based on some similar issues I see between my dad’s work and yours. I don’t claim any great expertise in English and, like you (I suspect), English is not my first language. I offer these suggestions only as what would make this essay clearer to a reader like me.

You really should run something like this through a spell-checker, or better yet get someone to proof-read it. After the many, many hours you must have spent writing this you’re going to be too tired and too familiar with it to spot mistakes that make your message harder to understand.

There are a couple of passages that seem to be at odds with each other, for example
“As a community, we have had two years without reliable contact from the producers of this product.” and “For the devs we’re going to have to see if you’re* incredibly positive behavior this year doesn’t plummet suddenly post-HoT.” (* should be “your”)
This is confusing. Is the lack of contact negative behaviour or positive?

You also make some generalisations, e.g. “In the future, this content is going to be the only remaining solo content as it has originally been and only content where those builds that formerly worked universally in this game will reliably apply.”
Is there such a thing as a build that worked “universally”? I guess maybe the “meta” builds, but even so I’ve never heard of a meta that was considered “universal”. People still acknowledge using different metas for dungeons, pve, pvp, etc.

You also set arbitrary time limits: " In a year and one month, if communications continue, we’ll know better…"
I know this goes back to your premise that it if you have X bad actions, it will take X + 1 good actions to make up for them. This is debatable in itself if applied to specific actions, but even more debatable when applied to time limits. The real world doesn’t work to such an exact schedule. You might talk about averages, or you could just indicate a personal time limit: “In one year and one month, I will know better…”
But speaking for an entire community in this way is of no use to your argument.

That’s enough from me. I’ve indulged my own proof-reading ocd (thank you for the opportunity). Good luck to you and thank you for presenting an interesting essay.

That’s no criticism of you. You’re perfectly entitled to enjoy games in your own way and if this one isn’t making you happy you shouldn’t feel guilty about it or apologise. It’s like a relationship where you’re just not compatible enough with your partner. Eventually, you need to stop trying to force yourselves to be together and move on. Or stay. It’s all good.

Naw I think you hit the nail on the head. SO much of GW2 needs to be researched or looked up.

I mean seriously, imagine being a new player and trying to enjoy the game without using the /wiki command or looking up guides on youtube or metabattle…

It’s biggest flaw is its unintuitiveness. It took me quite awhile to realize how great gw2 was because I had to learn so much and it took so long. (I came back, quit, came back, etc for like the first 1-2 years before I realized how good it was at heart)

And yea, unless you run with an organized WvW group with coms it sucks.

And I know what the combo system does now, but when I was new blasting fields and such was such a foreign concept, even having people explain it to me I didn’t understand.

with mmo’s… it’s almost a given you’ll need meta knowledge, that’s why it’s so great the game includes that /wiki command.

Although, it would be even better if the wiki was readable inside the game, so you could look something up without switching out of the game and coming back to find that you’d been killed by some critter that wasn’t there when you parked.

Running speed in and out of combat

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Movement_speed
it’s a 40% reduction to forward movement speed when in combat (not side or back)
it’s so that, when you’re in combat, you have to deal with it instead of just running away.

Is that officially anet’s goal? The wiki states the outcome but not the reason. I would really like to know their rationale behind this. Does forcing your players to fight (even if, perhaps, they don’t want to in some circumstance) really make the game more enjoyable? Considering how many options there are for escaping from a fight, nerfing the speed seems kludgy and kind of a punishment for engaging in the activity, rather than rewarding it in some way which would encourage people to stay in the fight longer.

Chainsaw the Skeleton does not hold chainsaws

It was some time last year. They made it so that some minis that held weapons had their weapons stowed instead to fix “clipping issues”.

Seems like “clipping issues” is becoming a ubiquitous reason for all kinds of non-functioning or non-available functionality.

Does this mean a name change to “Chainless the Skeleton”…? Or… “Skeleton Unchained?”

(Sorry to make mirth in this time of woe. Couldn’t help it. A personality flaw.)

i just tried selling fan of teq, hit for highest seller which was 47 silver and change , i got the error but it did sell but only for 2 silver wtf …… not even joking

I think I’ve seen that too, on occasion. It’s like if it can’t sell your entire order at the price you set, it doesn’t just leave you with the unsold items. Instead, it seems to sell them at some cut-throat clearing-sale price.

Elementals to equip conjures

I assume you mean the Greater/Lesser Elementals? They don’t exactly have a skill bar, but the slot that their glyph occupies changes to an action they can perform.

It would certainly add a lot of variety – and also complexity – if elementals could use conjures. That’s 4 conures, with 5 skills each, and 5 elemental types (fire, water, etc), giving 100 possible new skills. Is my math right? If people are going to complain that eles already have 40 skills, can you imagine the furor if they could summon elementals with 100 skills? And that’s when they’re not arguing over the issues of balancing all this. Yikes.

Of all the possible ideas suggested on these forums, this one doesn’t have much of a chance, but it’s fun to consider nonetheless. The dropping of elemental shards is a better possibility and intriguing. Earth elementals could drop obsidian shards, which already have a use. Fire elementals could drop ..molten fragments? Then again, you can see that people would just endlessly summon elementals just to have them die and collect their shards and that would lead to another argument about farming.

So... Squishy... Can't survive!

I personally like calling up both elementals in water attunement, where they both will heal and deal damage.

Couldn’t agree more. Many a time I’ve summoned the two elementals to distract trash mobs that I just want to get past without breaking my stride. Summon the boys, hit a mob, then keep running while they take care of business.

Suggestion: Return Merchant

Just playing Devil’s Advocate here, and with no judgement on the merit of your suggestion, I suspect the response you’ll receive to this is that i) items/recipes you have are already indicated as such in their tooltips and ii) when you attempt to buy such, you’re told that you can’t use it as you already have it and you’re asked to confirm the purchase. This will probably act as a disclaimer that once you’ve made the purchase, there’s no going back.

It could be argued that such items should be at least salvageable or forgeable, but that could also open an alternative way to make gold that might be destabilising (e.g. buy with badges, reforge into something sellable).

An interesting idea though..

I would like to ask if these mechanics indicated in any way, in terms of icons on your status bar? Or, are there any conditions that might slow you down and NOT appear as icons?

I ask because, even out of combat, I find myself running at varying speeds sometimes, and no chill effect is apparent. It’s like something is effecting me but it’s not clear what.

Agreed. I too find it hard to spot the little white cursor amongst all the glowy, shiny, flashy special effects. Would be nice to be able to select a cursor size and/or color.

Merchant instance issue

Whenever I’ve been in someone else’s instance, I cannot talk to any NPCs. They just ignore me. I feel like a ghost. I imagine that’s what’s happening here. It’s adding your merchant as an NPC and it’s ignoring you because it’s not your instance. I get that the non-owners should not get any controlling interest in the instance, but talking to merchants/NPCs should be allowed, at least.
