Is there any update on this? It appears that guildies in the party still appear as yellow rather than blue, and still disappear if not in range of the minimap.

Fire 3: Phoenix – Have it transform the elementalist INTO a phoenix that flys up to a range of 900 in a line/direction selected by the elementalist prior to the cast. Provides a detonate ability like Engineers Flamethrower 2 or Guardians Staff 2 where you can end the movement early providing a burst finisher and 240 radius AE damage. The elementalist appears either where the phoenix was detonated or at the max range in the direction selected. Detonate acts as a blast finisher.

I see the merit in your other ideas, but not sure about this one. While getting another mobility skill would be sweet, I’d still like some option to remain where I am when using the phoenix. And transforming into a phoenix sounds a bit distracting. Maybe keep as-is, but if the 3 is pressed while the phoenix is flying have the explosion there? And if 3 is double-tapped (is that too much?) have the explosion and teleport to there.

Ultimately, I’d settle for phoenix not stopping if I happen to press another skill while it’s still casting. The other fire skills keep casting without interruption.

I’m still smarting from Dragon’s Tooth getting changed from targeted to AOE. I like the new way but I also liked the old way. There was an opportunity there to have both: if 2 is pressed once, fire on target. If it’s held down, AOE. I used to use it as a fire-and-forget skill on targets like champs. Now you have to aim while running/dodging, which adds a bit of frustration to its already long casting/cooldown.

So... Squishy... Can't survive!

Other people have already highlighted that you need to know your weapons and use active defense, so I’ll add two things which I don’t think I’ve seen mentioned yet.

Never underestimate the usefulness of Mist Form. It gets you out of a tough situation so you can heal and try again. It also lets you unlock a chest or res somebody uninterrupted if you start unlocking/ressing before you use Mist Form. I often use it when ressing someone at Teq and a shockwave it about to hit me. It also breaks some stuns.

Also, if you’re downed and your enemy is low on health, consider attacking them instead of healing yourself. If they die first, you will rally. I had a beautiful moment with this when an abomination in Vexa’s lab downed the entire team, including me, and was just charging me. I was trying to heal (but wouldn’t have made it) when I realised he was on very little health. I blasted him instead and we won.

Games with no levels work perfectly and are arguably way better. Ultima online was the first wildly popular MMO and had no levels(it was a sandbox) You leveled up your skills(there was balance so you couldn’t be OP). Skills like swordsmanship, magic, cooking, parrying, blocking, ect..(think elder scroll games).

you still had to farm/craft better gear, and had to levels your skills to be good at the things you wanted to be good at.

No levels work fine in mmos, just has to be incorporated well. but no, gw2 couldnt suddenly go no levels. that wouldnt make sense for the structure of the game. But some would say going to low level maps and being downleveled helps with the world feeling like no levels exist.

Ah, I see. Rather than one generic ‘level’ there are levels in skills, which creates flexibility and actually sounds more natural than an arbitrary level. I retract my earlier statement.

Since the aim of the game for many players is to get to the level cap asap and then play the "End Game " whatever that is , why not simply have an “End Game”
No levels.
The entire world is the “End Game”
No levelling needed.

That may be fun for some, maybe even a lot of people, but I can’t say it would be for me. There’s a satisfaction to starting powerless and working your way up, to pitting yourself against opponents tougher than you and eventually besting them, to building your character step by step. Giving away the ‘end-game’ would just kill the game, imho.

And what is the end game, in any case? Would you start new players with ascended stuff? Since you propose no levelling, I presume you mean no levelling in the crafting fields either, so anyone can craft ascended straight off.

Just my 2 cents

LA crafting area suggestion for JP/ach

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Yesterday my friend and I were in the crafting area at Lion’s Arch when we came up with a mini-game: we wanted to see if we could jump onto each of the flag-poles beside the crafting stations. We managed to get onto all but one of them! (Still figuring out the last one). Some were easy, some required a bit of ingenuity, but it was all fun.

Anet – we would like to offer this suggestion: maybe this could be made into an achievement or a mini jumping puzzle, possibly named something like “Flagpole Sitta” (after the Harvey Danger song) or “Pole Position” or even “Standard Stander”.

The environment is all there, so there’s no need to design anything extra – unless you wanted to make the little horizontal rods (that hold the flags out on the flagpoles) solid to make it easier. That might actually be necessary to reach one of the flag-poles. Other than that, it’s a fun little re-use of an existing area and I’m sure people would enjoy it.

Tyria needs trains

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Yes, trains. The choo-choo kind. Steam locomotives. The Charr could easily build them. It would break the Asura’s monopoly on the country’s commuting infrastructure (competition is good) and provide an alternative in case the waypoint system ever breaks down (ahem).

Sure, you can run but what if your legs get tired? Or fall off?
It’s also great for those of us who don’t want to get cancer from excessive use of waypoints.

I propose a train line running in a big loop through all the zones, with two or three stations in each, usually at the big cities or important townships. (Skip Harathi. Nobody wants to see centaurs.) Buy a round-trip ticket and sit back, relax and take in the sights. Have a conversation with other players while watching the scenery go by. (Put a BL delivery agent on the train so players can buy hats while chatting and watching the scenery go by.)

Then there are the gameplay possibilities. Centaurs trying to stop the train (darn centaurs!) Fight bandits on top of the carriages! Listen to NPCs tell you about their dreams in non-stop looping two lines of dialogue. You need tunnels. (The dredge can build those.) When on top of the train, type /sit at the right moment and watch as your enemies get knocked off the train in looney tunes style. Then /laugh.

Overcrowding could be an issue. Perhaps limit the number of passengers per carriage (entry to the train is by buying a ticket at the kiosk) and auto-disembark travellers after a full circuit. Maybe even limit train rides to one per hour. Have a photo booth at the kiosks where you can buy a photo of you riding the train. Sell tee shirts for gems which say “I rode the S-train and all I got was this virtual tee shirt.” (The S in S-train stands for Steam, you pervert.)

Once a day, a world boss should appear on the roof of the train and players would have 12 minutes to defeat him before the train rolls off a cliff, killing everybody because the bridge is out. If they succeed, the boss’s corpse falls across the gap, providing safe passage for the train to continue its journey.

Trains are cool.

Nebo Terrace Still Undefendable.

Why no Cape?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Actually, let me modify my statement. Anet doesn’t want capes because they’d clip too much. Yes, tons of armor in the game already clips, but it seems that rather than say, “to heck with it” Anet is choosing to go the “minimal clipping” route instead.

I find this hard to believe. It just doesn’t seem like clipping is the real reason. And if it is, it’s a poor one. As you point out, clipping happens, and not just with armour. I’m used to seeing my character’s feet embedded in the ground or completely embedded in whatever surface I’m sitting on if that surface isn’t flat. Clipping is an evil we accept because, after all, it’s a game, not a perfect facsimile of life. You say they drew a line in the sand and declared “I will clip this far, but no further”? I don’t buy it.

It seems like clipping is just an excuse. Tell us the truth Anet. You hate capes because of childhood cape-related trauma, right? A dog ate your favourite cape.

not sure why anyone who wasn’t chasing achievements would willingly do JPs.

It’s actually what I do with most of my time in the game.

Same here. Jp’s are challenging, it’s a nice break from fighting and the views at the end are usually great.

I went with a guild-pack of mesmers. I tried several times on a the shortest sylvari and kept hitting my toe on the final pipes. Two of my guildies (on asura) got it, first try. I switched to asura… and completed.

That’s curious, because the hit-boxes are supposed to be the same for all races.

FIRE #2: Dragon’s tooth
Recently they sneakily changed it from dropping on a target to dropping on an AOE. That’s fine, but is it still possible to drop it on the targeted enemy? It used to be a great fire-and-forget weapon. It would be good if I could click once to drop on target, or hold to drop on AOE.

FIRE #3: Phoenix
From what I can see, dragon’s tooth completes its cast if you click another skill, but phoenix does not. I’d like phoenix to work the same way.

EARTH #2
Has this been nerfed recently? I used to be able to survive a fish-head blast at Teq with this on, but I can’t anymore, with no change to my armour or stats. I agree with you: increase toughness.

The time-gating thing bugs me too. I expect there’s some economic rationale where time-gating will somehow prevent flooding the market or something, but surely there’s a better way? Let us craft as much as we want, and – if you must limit sales on TP – limit them at that point, on the TP.

I don’t mind putting in hard work for something I want. I just hate being limited arbitrarily.

Time gating pushes you to log in every day (or week, whatever the gate), turning it into a habit for you. Also, it’s a way to artificially stretch out content when there is a lack of it.

I see. I would say dailies already cater for that but clearly multiple habit-forming methods would be more efficient. Still, it seems like a kludgy way of achieving that goal. There’s the concept of diminishing returns in dungeons. Perhaps instead of time-gating, apply diminishing returns on things if they’re charged/crafted multiple times in a day. Still annoying but at least you have options.

But I understand that there is a reason why “rooting” is important. Imagine being able to use Blurred Frenzy in PvP- you can follow somebody/chase somebody whilst using it, do damage AND be invulnerable all at the same time on a 12 second cd. It would make a lot of skills OP.

Surely, they could come up with a smarter compromise. Maybe allow the skill to function as-is if you stand still, but if you move you incur a longer cooldown or lost invulnerability or something.

- True the upgrades are nice but the game is so over balanced it counteracts any joy we get from the meager upgrades for the player characters.

What do you mean by over balanced? I can understand what unbalanced would mean, but I’m not clear on overbalanced. Do you mean it’s too balanced, and you’d like a little less balance? If so, which way should the balance tip and how much? And what if it starts to wobble?

- Everyone gets the same weapon and armor with a different skin. (GW2 needs random weapon and armor drops with the chance for unique items not only different skins),

I imagine (from my layman’s point of view) that it might be strenuous and uneconomical for Anet to produce a unique item for each customer. Maybe they could save some time and money and produce unique items only for you and me? (We’ll have to be careful not to tell anybody.)

- You create fantastic characters like the new exalted race …Very Cool but we can’t be one! This game is more to satisfy the programmer’s egos then create fun adventures for us.

So true. I’ve always wanted to play an elder dragon. Or even a Teq-level dragon. Why can’t I be a dragon and fight 200 players?

- I absolutely hate the idea of soul bounding anything. It makes no sense except to make people waste their gold so there is a better chance that the players will buy something from the store using GEMS or gold they bought from ANET.

I agree, mostly on the basis that I have no soul.

- Sounds like all the fun is only in the jungle now …where are the new continents like in the first Guild Wars game?

They’re still stuck in the first Guild Wars game. They couldn’t get visas.

- Saying you have ascended gear is like adding sport mirrors to my ford focus which
will make me as fast as a corvette. You need to make ascended gear mean something!

Exactly. I took the mirrors off my corvette but it didn’t turn back into a ford focus. What’s up with that?

- Way to guild oriented …let the solo players keep a higher percentage of there real skill level.

I think the problem starts with the name. It’s biased. I suggest a name change to “Guild-And-Solo Wars 2”.

- The programmers will balance the new upgrades so much that it will be just like the current game with more stuff for us to choose from! No real character improvements!

I hate having more stuff to choose from. Too many decisions.

- The only purpose for a game master in tabletop games is to make it fun for the players. The developers need to follow the same creed. If you make the game crazy fun to play the players will buy more stuff from your store without any advertising.

Indeed. What this game needs is more creed. And assassins.

- This is why dumb games like League of legends is kicking GW2’s popularity.

I see that as a plus. I want people to leave GW2. Then, one day, I can finally solo Teq like I’ve always dreamed.

:)

(P.S. I wasn’t taking the mickey, just having a little fun. Thank you for a good post and if you ever want to team up and do a jp or something, let me know.)

It’s the reason I seldom use Churning Earth. It’s just annoying having to stop, take your fingers off the movement keys and press skill 5. Slowing the movement speed as you suggest is a better idea than what’s there.

Ele role in everything?!?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

The thing is that currently other professions can do everything better than ele so why bother using it?

You may not mean it, but that sounds a little troll-ish and it doesn’t even make sense.

In short, every profession has its strengths and weaknesses, and its own focus. The focus of the ele is being a jack of all trades. An ele may not exceed some other profession at some particular task, but it can be almost as good and, more importantly, it has the versatility to provide a variety of roles in a variety of situations with the most available skills of any profession (maybe on par with engineer, which I’m not greatly familiar with).

It sounds like you’re coming at this with a pre-conceived bias and you’re looking for confirmation, or just trying to get a rise. Either is a waste of your time and ours. Ultimately, if you’ve tried ele and not enjoyed it, try harder or try something else. I don’t know what else to tell you.

The irony of this statement is hilarious to me.

Constantly people complain about how Trahearne shouldn’t be Marshal, the PC should…

Yet one of the most boring parts of Season 2 – the attending boring parties and setting up formal meetings – is exactly what the PC would constantly be doing as Pact Marshal.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I never wanted to be Pact Marshal. I didn’t even run for the post. I think Trahearne and co secretly voted me into the position as a scape-goat in case it all goes wrong.

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Well, okay. The title seemed promising, but then you went in a different direction. I suppose this could be a troll, but let’s give you the benefit of doubt.

Eles do indeed have a role in everything. They have the lowest hp but I’m not sure what you mean by specs. Eles have arguably the most versatility but with the caveat of requiring more effort to get it right. You can cause considerable damage, you can control the field, you can support your allies, all with much success, if you put the work in.

I also read somewhere that in pvp tournaments, the winners are usually something like 5% in all the other professions and 35% ele (anybody know that source?)
I have no experience of the tempest, but I’ve heard mixed reviews.

I think the most likely answer you’d get to this question is that no profession is arguably significantly better or worse than any other. It comes down to your playing style, your skills and your effort.

Megaservers - Can they be finished?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

There’s something disturbing to me (from some real world experiences) in the idea of being restricted to a particular area (in this case, my own server), as some people are suggesting with the removal of megaservers. I’ve made friends from other servers – our friendships based on shared interests, not the server we happened to start on. I think a global stage doesn’t preclude community. It provides more people to form a community with. Just as an enforced gated ‘community’ (or server) doesn’t naturally create real community. Asking for the megaservers’ removal reminds me of real world parallels where people are forced to live in a confined space at the whims of someone else. Fortunately, megaservers seem to be here to stay, which allows us to make friends with other servers, or just with people from our own server if that’s your preference. More options is good. As are suggestions on how to improve the megaservers and make it easier to form a good global community, so lets focus on those.

A tick box that says “do not show this message again” would solve this for all sides

No, it wouldn’t. An annoyingly large fraction of players would click this the first time they spend more than a few shards. Then, 3 days later, they would complain that they didn’t get a warning message.

I’d suggest a check box something like “Do not show this message again for 10 minutes”. I’d also like to have that applied to salvaging rares so I don’t have to click “Yes” and then restart my salvage kit again to keep salvaging.

In another thread (about salvaging rares) someone suggested adding a a modifier key to suppress the confirmation message, e.g. [shift+click] versus just a [click]. I think that’s better than any sort of permanent or semi-permanent option, in that it means you always have consciously suppress the confirmation — it can never happen because you forgot about an option you selected earlier.

Well…. what if I do want an option and I’m willing to take some personal responsibility for it? Ticking the option is tantamount to a disclaimer that any fault in using this option is my own. This is not unlike another discussion where somebody was arguing that we shouldn’t have an Open All option because somebody might lose some loot. Options aren’t bad – nobody has to use them if they don’t want to. Why not have the option for people like me, and a shift+click for people who don’t want to use the option? Everybody wins.

Why can’t this just display as the same kind of message you get when your gathering tool runs out? I.e. the text just displays on-screen (without a dialog window) and fades out after a while. Same with anvil. Pop up a quick message and fade it out.

Somebody suggested in another forum that there should be an option to not target neutrals (like moa) which I totally agree with. Then it got me thinking…

How great would it be if we could select the order of targets when using the auto-target or target switching buttons?

When capturing camps in WvW, there’s nothing more annoying than scouts. I assume everybody takes them out first? But it’s hard in the heat of battle to target the scouts when all the enemy npcs are close together and you’re trying to stay alive.
What if you could tell your targeting to work in this order: i) scouts, ii) guards (they have annoying bolas), iii) everyone else.

At boss fights, the boss doesn’t stay targetable through the whole fight. Often, I find that when I re-target, it picks on some imp or whatnot before it gets to the boss. If only I could tell the targeting to pick: i) the boss, ii) any regen objects like crystals or portals, iii) anything else that isn’t invulnerable.

The targeting order should really only pertain to NPCs I think. Using it against other players might feel… well, a little discriminatory.

Standing around in a fort AFK looking through my bags is not something i approve of and i choose not to do this, there are others trying hard to complete events, and generally the map is full, if i am AFK sorting my bags while the map is full i am taking that map spot to do nothing important.

So teleport to LA or wherever and do it there. For that matter, just take the gate into Brisban.

And then you lose the buff, so you have to start all over again when you re enter the map. What is your damage against people wanting improvements to inventory features? If you don’t want to use it, don’t. Getting a feature doesn’t mean you have to use it. This is like us asking the landlord if we could please have a dishwasher installed, and the nosy neighbor poking their head out the door, and saying, “well you can just wash then by hand, you don’t NEED a dishwasher”

No kitten. We know there are work-arounds, but wouldn’t it be an improvement on the current system?

Amen to that, Kitty. I see this attitude all the time and it boggles me too. Well said.

The phrase ‘be careful what you wish for’ springs to mind.

How long would it be before the first player opened 250 champ bags only to find that their 80 free inventory spaces quickly filled up and they spot a pre-cursor tumbling down the right of the screen which hasn’t made it into the available space.

Cue frantic clearing of bags before the inevitable disconnect or crash occurs and the additional loot is lost.

If you thought that the reaction to losing a few mordrem blooms because of disconnects during the last event was over the top, when this started happening the QQing on the forums would be Biblical.

Eidolonemesis has already addressed this admirably. There’s no reason Open All couldn’t just stop opening bags if you run out of room. Ultimately, the rational you’re suggesting would penalise me for something somebody else might do, which doesn’t seem fair. Surely, there should be some personal responsibility? Nobody would be forced to use Open All. Those who choose to would benefit greatly from having one or two clicks to use up 100 luck instead of 100 double-clicks.

I’d definitely like to see a boss timer or some indication of when world bosses will spawn.

The Number One most needed change is a toggle to disable the targeting of ambient (white) and non-hostile (yellow) mobs from both autotargeting and the targeting keys (eg nearest target key or next target key). These mobs could still be targeted by manually selecting them while their targeting is disabled.

Oh god yes. I can’t count the number of times I’ve angered a moa while trying to target an enemy. How is this not yet a feature yet?

1) ‘Open all’ sounds like a reasonable feature but if you apply a little thought you’ll come to the conclusion that it won’t be implemented for the following reason:

All loot bags offer the option of acquiring multiple items in their loot tables – when opening a significant number of bags (say 100) the number of different items being acquired is going to be far in excess of the number of bags opened. Inventory (player bag space) is limited and therefore the extra items acquired (over and above the available space in the players bags) would need to be stored ‘somewhere’ until the player clears their bag space.

Either unlimited storage would be possible as all new items would be placed ‘somewhere’ until the player frees up inventory space and the items are collected or all the additional items would be lost when the player logs off.

With no disrespect intended, that’s a nonsensical reason. There’s already an additional storage like you describe. It’s no different from clicking a hundred bags manually and running out of space. I often forget how much stuff I have and when I loot a boss chest I get the ‘encumbered’ message. The items I can’t hold are displayed in a separate list window until I make room in my inventory.

Furthermore, there are plenty of situations where a stack of items does NOT produce loot – e.g. 100 stacks of luck.

Furthermore furthermore, there should be an ‘Open All’ and ‘Open All & Deposit’ options so that we can just send a ton of stuff straight to the bank. Problem solved.

I leave a game behind as soon as it can’t measure up to my current standards.

Future game designers take heed. The bar has been set.
